Spring has officially sprung. While there is a perception that Australians will be dusting off shelves and airing out rooms as part of a ‘Spring cleaning’ zeitgeist; fresh insights reveal a quarter (26%) of Australians are more likely to close the door on a messy room rather than vacuum it[1].

The new insights released by Samsung Australia show that Australian respondents often choose the path of least resistance – and hygiene – to avoid cleaning. Over a third (37%) of 18-25 year olds admit to throwing a rug over a mess instead of cleaning it, while two fifths (41%) let their pet ‘clean-up’ crumbs to avoid vacuuming[2]. In fact, over half (58%) of 18-25 year olds admit to only ever mopping when there is a visible spill or dirt they can’t avoid, and only ever vacuum if they have a guest coming over (37%)[3].

Australian youth aren’t the only Australians with bad cleaning habits. One in five (20%) Australian respondents admit they wait for someone else to vacuum rather than doing it themselves. Alarmingly, double that number (41%) claim to follow the ‘5-second rule’, eating food they’ve dropped on the floor knowing they’ve not mopped for at least a fortnight (49% of respondents). Further, the insights show 18-25 year old respondents are twice as likely than the general population to eat expired food from the fridge (41% vs 23%)[4].

Confusingly, while half of Australian respondents agree that it is important for their air conditioner to purify the air in their home as well as optimise the temperature (50%), just under two-thirds (60%) admit they haven’t actually checked whether the inside of their air conditioning unit is clean recently[5]. This gap highlights that Australians are aware that indoor air quality can impact their health, but aren’t willing or certain of how to follow through on maintenance.

According to Rachel Carter, Head of Home Appliances, Samsung Australia, many Australians still approach cleaning as a laborious manual chore without realising that hours of time and effort could be saved with the help of smart yet affordable appliances. Further, she says there needs to be better education that many appliances clean themselves to help maintain house hygiene.

“As the weather warms up, many Australians are ready to spend more time doing the things they like most with the people they love in the great outdoors. While understandably, staying inside doing housework might not be high on that list, it’s important to schedule in regular cleaning to help keep homes fresh,” said Ms. Carter.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced the expansion of its proprietary One UI platform to its home appliance lineup, delivering a unified and intuitive software experience across compatible smartphones, TVs and now smart appliances. As a part of this initiative, some smart appliances will receive software updates for up to 7 years after launching[1], starting from 2024-launched home appliances being updated in September[2].

A Unified Software Experience Across Connected Samsung Products

With One UI, Samsung is unifying the user experience for the product categories of mobile devices, TVs and home appliances through the application of consistent design elements and functionality. This includes Apps & Services like Bixby[3], Gallery, and Samsung TV Plus[4], which are being made available across various types of screens to enable seamless device interaction and media consumption.

Device Connectivity is also enhanced through SmartThings[5], integrating the home’s devices into a unified ecosystem with easy access to helpful services like Family Care, Pet Care and Home Care[6]. When it comes to Common UI, users will get the benefit of familiar interfaces like Now Brief[7], which delivers personalised and relevant information at a glance. Now Brief offers family members a curated selection of useful content, including daily weather updates, family schedules, tailored recipes, and home insights such as how much time is left on the washing machine.

Up to 7-Year Software Support for Select Smart Appliances

Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung home appliances will be eligible for software updates for up to seven years after launching, starting from models launched in 2024[8]. This supports Samsung’s commitment to provide good value by enhancing functionality and prolonging security updates throughout the product lifecycle.

From September 2025, eligible 2024 launched models[9] will receive various software updates that bring enhancements in usability, intelligence and security:

• Upgraded Security: Knox Matrix[10], Samsung’s security solution extending protection across compatible devices based on private block chain technology, will be extended to compatible Wi-Fi[11] enabled refrigerators, washers and dryers, and air conditioners[12]. These products will be protected through Knox Trust Chain[13], which allows connected appliances to monitor each other’s security status. Screen-equipped models like the Bespoke AI Family Hub + French Door Refrigerator, AI Home Side By Side Refrigerator with a 9-inch AI Home screen and Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo with a 7-inch AI Home screen will also receive updates like encrypted Credential Sync and Passkey support. These screen appliances will also be updated with the Knox Security dashboard provided on 2025 models, which allow users to easily monitor the security status of connected appliances in real time.

• Smarter Features: Select Family Hub appliances and refrigerators with 9-inch AI Home screens will benefit from the upgraded AI Vision Inside applied to 2025 products, which now supports the recognition of frequently used packaged foods in addition to a larger number of fresh foods[14]. Bixby[15] is also upgraded to support Voice ID, allowing it to recognise user voices and provide personalised experiences on shared devices. Users can also enable Bixby quickly and intuitively by simply double tapping on the screen.

• Refined Interface: A refreshed One UI design — first seen on 2025 appliances — will come to 2024 models like refrigerators, washers, and ranges, offering intuitive navigation and region-specific settings.

New research reveals Samsung smart devices make everyday living wonder-filled

The nationwide roll-out of Samsung’s new AI-powered home appliances and audio visual solutions coincides with the launch of new research which reveals over a third (37%) of Australians believe smart devices bring wonder to their homes alongside art (36%) and beautiful home décor (46%)[5].

For half of Australians (50%), wonder emerges with the convenience of operating devices remotely, while for 44 per-cent of single parents with kids, it’s the potential to reduce energy bills via their smart devices[6].

With an average of 24 connected devices in the average Australian home[7], two-thirds (67%) believe AI-assisted devices could further help to reduce the daily mental load and give them time back to relax.[8] In fact, two thirds (68%) of Australians admit to thinking about chores up to four times a day[9], when they’d rather be relaxing in front of the TV (83%), listening to music (61%), or spending time with loved ones (60%)[10].

Introducing Bespoke AI Jet Ultra – The World’s Most Powerful Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner with up to 400W of suction power

As part of the new Bespoke AI range, The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra boasts an impressive suction power of up to 400W[3] to tackle tough cleaning tasks so Australians can spend less time cleaning, and more time on the things they love. The HexaJet Motor is the key component that helps generate this high suction power. Its unique Hexagon stator structure with a second-stage diffuser and an impeller with the reduced thickness improve airflow and increase motor efficiency, thus enabling up to 400W of suction power. Plus, the motor allows the vacuum cleaner to run for up to 100 minutes on one battery when using Min mode[4].

Intelligent Cleaning Support through AI Cleaning Mode 2.0

The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra also introduces the upgraded AI Cleaning Mode 2.0.[5] By sensing the brush load and vacuuming air pressure, this mode can classify a total of six different cleaning environments[6] and automatically adjust the suction power and brush speed for optimal cleaning performance. When using the Active Dual Brush, the soft roller helps pick up large dust particles on the floor while the nylon and rubber bristles help improve performance of carpets[7]. The vacuum cleaner senses corners[8] with the Slim LED Brush+, and by adjusting the suction power and brush speed[9] for the different cleaning environments, it uses power efficiently.

HEPA Filtration System

Complementing this powerful and intelligent experience, Samsung has a filtration system to ensure dust particles are captured when air is expelled from the vacuum cleaner. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra features a Multi-layered Filtration system that effectively traps fine dust.[10] When air comes in, internal compartments like the cyclone and a metal mesh grille filter catch dust particles in succession. As a result, it achieves a filtration efficiency of up to 99.999%.[11]

Another distinctive benefit is that Samsung has implemented HEPA filtration into its Multi-layered Filtration system. With this system, the Bespoke AI Jet Ultra captures dust particles as small as 0.3µm, allowing less dust[12] to escape into the air.

The Next Generation of Refrigeration

Samsung’s new 615L AI Home Side-by-Side Refrigerator offers multiple screen options, including a 9-inch AI Home screen that helps manage smart devices in one place, access apps and get personalised information tailored to individual preferences[13]. Featuring an Auto Open Door for effortless access, it is designed for convenience and better organisation. It also provides easy hands-free control by just using your voice to control settings, select functions or ask questions through Bixby[14].

The refrigerator also includes access to SmartThings Energy[15], which can help monitor your energy consumption in real-time.

A Smarter Way to Manage Food, Home, Family Communication, and Entertainment

Samsung’s latest refrigerators include the 809L Bespoke AI Family Hub^TM + French Door Refrigerator with a 32-inch screen designed to enhance four key aspects of daily life: Food, Home, Family Communication, and Entertainment[16]. Using an internal camera, the AI Vision Inside feature can recognise up to 33 different food items[17], including both fresh and processed foods, being put in or taken out to help with smarter food management and personalised meal recommendations.

Beyond food management, Samsung’s AI-powered screens transform the refrigerator into a smart home hub, providing seamless control over connected appliances. With Map View, users can monitor and manage Samsung appliances and third-party smart devices, such as smart lights and plugs[18]. SmartThings Energy helps track and optimise energy usage, while Bixby voice assistant delivers personalised assistance by recognising individual family members’ voices[19].

The Daily Board feature enhances family communication by displaying real-time updates, schedules, and daily energy reports. Families can also access a shared gallery for storing memories and a digital calendar for easier planning. For entertainment, users can enjoy Spotify integration, SmartView Mirroring for screen sharing from smartphones[20] or Samsung TVs, and a dedicated photo gallery to add a personal touch to the kitchen.

And if that person also uses the low vision option on their Galaxy smartphone, it will be automatically synced to the screen for a better viewing experience.

New SmartThings services have also been introduced including Family Care,[23] which sends an alert to other family members if a user’s movement is not detected at the set time — or if there is no activity for a certain amount of time after the last activity. It is also possible to use the robot vacuum cleaner to look for signs of an emergency, with all of this functionality being tightly secured by Samsung Knox.

Samsung Electronics Australia has today released the Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition. The report’s findings reveal a generational shift in the perception of home appliances, particularly with Gen Z and Millennials.

According to the report, younger Australians are redefining what it means to have a stylish, yet functional home. No longer is an appliance a device for a particular purpose or use, but an object of status, and in some cases, attraction.

While appliance aesthetics are becoming a priority, the data also reveals that looks aren’t everything. Practicality amid a cost-of-living crunch also plays a major role in their purchase decision, increasing demand for a new category for smart, high-value appliances.

“Our Samsung Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition reveals Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge in redefining what it means to own and showcase home appliances,” said Jeremy Senior, Vice President – Consumer Electronics, Samsung Electronics Australia. “These insights demonstrate a clear generational divide. While energy savings are crucial for everyone, younger generations prioritise sleek design and smart AI functionality.

Appliance Envy is Rising

Having the latest technology or the coolest gadgets has been a leading trend for decades but hearing a friend rejoice over the latest fridge or vacuum hasn’t been common, until now.

As social media usage continues to generate an influx of ‘foodie’ cooking trends, it’s no surprise to see that the humble fridge is emerging as a particular source of personal pride. One quarter (25%) of Australians and over a third (34%) of Gen Z say they’re more likely to invite people over if they have a fancy fridge, highlighting a growing trend for modern appliances that are seen as status symbols, and how a stylish home environment is becoming a key factor in creating core memories.[4]

The data also suggests a rising sentiment of personal pride and envy attached to our appliances, particularly with younger people. Just as Australian’s may take pride in their lawns or barbeque set-up; the data shows similar affections being adopted towards household appliances.

More than a quarter (28%) of Australians say they prefer visiting friends and attending events in homes with modern, luxury or smart appliances. One quarter (25%) of all Australians and just under a third (32%) of Gen Z also say they feel embarrassed or judged for outdated or mismatched appliances.[5]

Interestingly, over a fifth (22%) of all Australians and a striking 36% of Gen Z say they’re even more attracted to people with luxury appliances, with some even expressing an emotional attachment to their appliances. This compares to 51% of Boomers who see appliance as ‘what they are’ and are least likely to discuss their appliances with friends compared to other generation.[6]

Practical elements more important than ever as cost-of-living bites

The rising desire for stylish appliances is balanced by the need for practicality, as cost-of-living pressures continue to dominate Australian households. Where aesthetics meets convenience, the findings show a new ‘high value’ appliance category emerge – sleek appliances that also make everyday life easier.

This comes as the Australians @ Home Report: 2024 Smart Living Edition shows that over half (51%) say high energy consumption is their number one appliance-related frustration, and almost all (94%) are making accommodations in the home to save energy amid the challenging economic climate.

Samsung’s SmartThings app bridges the gap between aesthetics and practicality by seamlessly connecting users to their appliances and allowing appliances to interact with each other. While all generations are looking to reduce their carbon footprint, boomers, according to the report findings, are the most energy-conscious generation. This generation make additional effort to keep energy consumption down such as turning off devices (62%), using LED light bulbs (44%), and only using air conditioning or heating when it’s abnormally hot or cold (53%).

AI’s growing presence in home devices is captivating consumers, with the report showing a rising appetite for smart technology.

Australians recognise that intelligent appliances have the biggest impact when they’re linked together as part of an ecosystem, and they demonstrate a fast-growing taste for more intelligent and connected smart home experiences.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has today announced the highly-anticipated AI Family Hub^TM French Door Refrigerator is available in Australia, with enhanced connectivity and AI capabilities.

This refrigerator boasts a 21.5-inch screen that features the new AI Vision Inside[1], which uses an internal camera to recognise up to 33 different food items that are put into and taken out of the refrigerator and suggests recipes using those ingredients. Users can also set use by dates’ on the AI Family Hub screen for food items, which then allows the refrigerator to send a notification when the set date draws near[2]; conveniently helping to save money by reducing food waste.

The arrival marks the recent reinforcement of Samsung’s leadership and commitment to the BESPOKE AI range, demonstrating its vision for how connectivity amongst them can improve the overall experience at home, and how AI enhances the performance of appliances.
