Across Australia, sleep is emerging as a critical—yet often overlooked—pillar of health and well-being frequently sacrificed in favour of the demands of modern lifestyles today.

Casting a lens on this reality, the Samsung SEAO (Southeast Asia and Oceania) Ecosystem Health Study[1] sought to analyse the general lifestyle and sentiments towards health and fitness, as well as general wellness habits—including sleep, fitness, and lifestyle choices. While adults in Australia rank health as their third highest daily priority, trailing finances and family according to the study, many still struggle to achieve the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep.[2] An average person in SEAO sleeps for just 6 hours and 51 minutes every night and stand to miss out on benefits that they rank as important reasons to getting sufficient shut-eye – such as improved immunity (21%), maintaining good health (17%), and staying mentally agile (16%).

Want to sleep better and feel these benefits? Here are three practical steps to address common sleep concerns using Galaxy devices like the Galaxy Watch8 series and Galaxy Ring.

Step 1: Establish a consistent bedtime routine

Galaxy Watch8, built to suit diverse lifestyles with advanced capabilities—setting a new standard for style and personalised health experiences.

Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is the primary concern for consumers in Australia (25%) citing an “inability to switch off” as a further obstacle to a good night’s rest.

We all know that going device-free is easier said than done, with many relying on smartphones as their alarm. Enter the Galaxy Watch8 series and Galaxy Ring, super comfortable sleep companions that even allow you to dismiss alarms by just pinching your fingers!

Beyond putting aside one’s smartphone for the evening, winding down also includes setting up a peaceful environment that is conducive for sleep. Custom routines on the SmartThings app[3] cue your connected devices automatically, turning off your lights and TV at bedtime for instance.

(Left) A sleep environment summary card displayed in Galaxy Now Briefing, (Right) a detailed sleep environment report

Personalising your sleeping conditions doesn’t stop there. Sleep environment reports[4] from Samsung Health app provide detailed insights into key factors — such as temperature, humidity. When connected to your Galaxy devices, other appliances like Samsung air conditioners can work together to ensure you have a pleasant sleep through adjusting the temperature with “Good Sleep” mode[5] that finds the optimal temperature at each sleep stage[6] for a top-notch sleeping environment.

Bedtime Guidance provides personalised recommendations based on the user’s sleep data from the past three days.

Adding another layer of support, Galaxy Watch8’s Bedtime Guidance[7] analyses sleep patterns then suggests an optimal bedtime based on your previous statistics, so you can reset your sleep schedule and wake up refreshed.

For those concerned about long-term sleep health, the Galaxy Watch8 series also detects signs of moderate sleep apnea.[8] The Galaxy Ring complements this with a powerful sleep AI algorithm and detailed sleep tracking[9] to monitor movement during sleep, heart and respiratory rate, and snoring—making it easy to build better sleep habits over time.

Step 2: Maintain your energy throughout the day

Energy Score on the Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy S25 Ultra

The next most concerning aspect of sleep in Australia is whether one can maintain one’s energy levels throughout the day (19%). We are all familiar with the feeling of having apparently slept well the night before yet but still experiencing fatigue during the day, with the duration of sleep not translating into the desired energy levels across work, study or play. When you pick up your smartphone in the morning or simply check your Galaxy Watch throughout the day, a glimpse of your Energy Score[10] tells you all you need to know.

Energy Score, an indicator of your condition based on 7 key sleep and activity metrics

Energy Score indicates a daily measurement of your physical and mental energy and readiness, based on sleep, activity, and heart rate data, to help you find a healthy balance in the day ahead. Measuring from 0 to 100, a low score guides you to take things easy, while a high score helps gives you the confidence to push your limits.

Step 3: Ensure a comfortable night’s rest

After proactively harnessing the short-term benefits of a good night’s sleep, such as better energy throughout the day, the next biggest concern is to simply have a comfortable sleep (19%).

That’s why the Galaxy Watch8 series goes beyond sleep tracking with features like the Antioxidant Index[11], a first-of-its-kind Samsung smartwatch capability that measures your carotenoid level in just five seconds, giving you another layer of insight to build a long-term wellness routine.

As you take the steps to make adjustments to your sleep, Galaxy’s Sleep Coaching Program[12] helps tracks your progress, analyses your accumulated sleep pattern data and provides you insights with suggestions for better sleep such as meditating before bed, for example.

To get clued into how to make your sleep more comfortable, Galaxy Ring is your go-to wearable that sits comfortably on your finger whilst tracking overall sleep including sleep stages, sleep patterns, movement during sleep, overnight skin temperature, Heart Rate (HR) and Heart Rate Variance (HRV) and providing Sleep Coaching program to improve your sleep habits, when you wake up[13]. First time users get to test their ideal ring size with the Galaxy Ring sizing kit before confirming their purchase.[14]

Whether you’re a student, parent, or working professional, the need for restorative rest is both universal and profoundly personal. Try out these three steps today and make the change to your everyday sleep for better productivity, energy and overall well-being!

[1] The Samsung SEAO Ecosystem Health Study was conducted in December 2024 via online surveys, with 18,168 respondents (of which 3,098 were wearable users), aged 18 – 59 years old, in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam.

As the digital health and wearable devices industries grow, precise data measurement and analysis are becoming increasingly important. On September 27, Samsung Electronics released Samsung Health Research Stack to strengthen data-based digital health research.

Samsung Health Research Stack is Samsung Electronics’ open-source project that supports digital health researches using mobile and wearable devices in Android and Wear OS environments. The platform provides IT developers and medical researchers with a software environment to conveniently and safely plan services using relevant data.

Because clinical research requires apps and services that continuously measure, share and analyse health-related data from users’ daily lives, Samsung Health Research Stack aims to help researchers implement the features they want.

Following the launch of Samsung Health Stack Alpha in 2022 and Samsung Health Stack 1.0 in 2023, Samsung has announced the latest version with Samsung Health Research Stack 2.0 Beta. The open-source project has rebranded to Samsung Health Research Stack, emphasising support for the research ecosystem as part of the newly launched Samsung Health SDK Suite — a comprehensive package of software development tools for healthcare solutions.

New Features Help Researchers With Their Studies

Samsung Health Research Stack promotes more efficient digital health research. Features include an app SDK for easy application creation, a back-end service that manages data collected by the app and a web portal to assist with research design and data analysis. In response to feedback from researchers, the latest version includes more convenient features.

The app SDK is a development tool that reduces the cost and time required to develop applications for digital health — and now supports the development of both mobile apps for research and smartwatch apps that utilise wearable sensor data. Notably, enhanced support for the Sensor SDK allows researchers to create watch apps that measure and utilise electrocardiogram[1], blood oxygen level and body composition[2] data from the innovative Galaxy Watch[3] sensors. The new Data SDK integration helps researchers create applications that use sleep data from the Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring.

Moreover, performance and usability improvements have been made to the back-end service and web portal. The back-end architecture has been reinforced to handle data from large clinical trials with added features to manage studies. The web portal helps with the research process from patient recruitment and surveys to progress management and data analysis.

Driving Results Around the World with Introduction at SDC24

Samsung Health Research Stack is open to any company or medical institution in the digital healthcare space developing solutions that utilise wearable devices and biomarkers.

Samsung Health Research Stack will be showcased at the Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) on October 3 in San Jose, California. Developers can join a Code Lab session during the event to experience the latest features firsthand.

“Samsung Health Research Stack is already being used in multiple domestic and international clinical studies that utilise Galaxy Watch,” said Yunsu Lee, Head of the Data Intelligence Team, Samsung Research. “With our innovative wearable technology, we aim to contribute to expanding the digital health ecosystem and serve as a valuable partner to IT and medical professionals in achieving research breakthroughs.”

The latest version of Samsung Health Research Stack is available on the Samsung Developer website and GitHub.

[1] “The ECG feature is intended to create, record, store, transfer, and display a single channel electrocardiogram (ECG), similar to a Lead I ECG for adults 22 years and older. The ECG feature is not intended to replace traditional methods of diagnosis or treatment. The ECG feature is not intended for users with other known arrhythmias. If an irregular heartbeat or atrial fibrillation is detected, consult a doctor. If you experience symptoms of a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular conditions, do not rely on the notification of the device and consult a doctor. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE. IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST, WORSEN OR CHANGE UNEXPECTEDLY, TALK TO YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL.”

[2] Samsung Health is not a medical or therapeutic device and is not intended for medical use. It is solely intended for fitness and wellness purposes only and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions; or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease; or for the prevention or control of conception or pregnancy. Body composition should not be used if you have an implanted pacemaker or other implanted medical devices, or if you are pregnant. We recommend that women who are pregnant do not use the body composition feature as the accuracy of measurements obtained during pregnancy can be reduced due to subtle changes in hydration and body moisture levels. Measurement results may not be accurate if you are under 20 years old. Samsung recommends that you consult with your doctor or physician before participating in any exercise program

[3] Available on Galaxy Watch 4 or later models equipped with Wear OS. Data supported may vary depending on sensor type and model.

It is an exciting time to be a consumer in Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO), as the digital landscape undergoes profound transformation, fueled by the rapid adoption of AI technologies. In a dynamic region like SEAO with diverse local cultures and values, a new generation of tech-savvy consumers – Gen Zs and Millennials – are demanding highly personalised experiences that appeal to their unique preferences across product and service offerings. Increasingly, consumers expect technology to seamlessly integrate into their lives, anticipate their needs, and to offer tailored solutions that truly matter.

At Samsung, we recognise this ongoing paradigm shift and are committed to meeting this demand head-on with our vision for AI to power new innovations across our businesses and to unlock new and personalised experiences to make life better for everyone. With many devices around the world and even more connected through Samsung’s platforms and services, we are uniquely positioned to bring an AI-powered future to life across the strength and scale of our diversified businesses.

This vision is underpinned by our decade-long investment in research and development, as well as in AI technologies. These investments are part of a long-term plan to ensure that Samsung remains at the forefront of AI innovation, enabling us to deliver on our promise of personalised AI experiences.

Delivering Personalised Experiences through AI

To meet the unique needs and preferences of consumers in SEAO, we are tailoring our AI strategy to bring personalised experiences to users here, emphasising cultural relevance and localisation. We understand that just as users in SEAO come from a proverbial melting pot of languages and cultures, building a one-size-fits-all solution simply cannot work, and therefore we want to develop AI solutions that are sensitive to the diverse needs in our region.

Galaxy AI: Wider Support of Languages and Dialects in SEAO

To start, Galaxy AI[1], available on select Samsung mobile devices, now supports a wider range of languages and dialects in SEAO, making it more accessible and useful to our customers. Earlier this year, we announced the addition of new languages and dialects, including Australian English and Cantonese, adding to a total of 16 languages[2] available in Australia. We are committed in our efforts, and have since expanded support for Galaxy AI to 20 languages[3] available in Australia.

An Indonesian content creator using the AI Composer feature on the Galaxy Z Flip6 to generate catchy social media captions in local language.

We are also extending the capabilities of Galaxy AI to more Samsung mobile device users, further democratising access to AI-powered experiences. The newest Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 devices bring Galaxy AI to foldable form factors, unlocking new possibilities for users in SEAO and globally. With the One UI 6.1.1 update, which has begun rollout in SEAO, the latest Galaxy AI features such as Sketch to image[4] and Portrait Studio[5] will be expanded to even more Galaxy models, bringing the power of personalised AI into more hands. To cater to the unique needs of different consumer groups, we also continue to provide more choices through various devices such as our latest Galaxy 24 FE and tablets that also have Galaxy AI features available.

Launch of Galaxy Ring in SEAO

For our wearable companions, we are tapping onto AI to augment offerings such as Samsung Health, to provide users with personalised insights and recommendations to improve their well-being. By bringing Galaxy AI to Galaxy Watch, we are combining powerful on-device AI with the extensive Samsung Health app to enable more comprehensive health insights, along with motivational encouragement to help you improve your daily wellness[6].

Expanding our wearables portfolio further, the Galaxy Ring, which will launch in our region this quarter, offers a simple approach to everyday wellness in yet another form factor. Designed for 24/7 health monitoring, Galaxy Ring is compact and fits comfortably on the finger. Galaxy Ring features Samsung’s leading sleep analysis and a powerful sleep AI algorithm to help users easily understand sleep patterns and build better habits3. The new features like Energy Score[7] enable users to receive a better understanding of their daily condition through a combined analysis of personal health metrics including sleep time, sleeping heart rate, and more. This is just the start of Samsung’s journey to build some of the most personalised health experiences yet.

Smarter and personalised homes with AI

Across our wider Samsung ecosystem of home appliances and TVs, we are working hard to integrate AI to further improve the lives of our customers, allowing them to manage their homes in a smarter way. Some of our new home appliances are equipped with AI capabilities that enable them to connect with each other for simplified usage and control, as well as improved performance, creating experiences where you can live more by doing less.

Providing a seamless and customised laundry solution, the Bespoke AI Heat Pump ComboTM, intelligently adjusts the washing and drying performance for each load with AI Wash & Dry[9]. It also senses the weight of the laundry, fabric[10], and soil level to dispense the appropriate amount of water and detergent[11], and then adjusts the drying process to suit the weight and fabric.
