We are at the beginning of the most exciting, and probably one of the most historic moments in technology. The era of mobile AI is here – which for Samsung opened up by the introduction of Galaxy AI[1] features on the Galaxy S24 series, our first AI phone.

Revolutionising Mobile Experiences with a Hybrid AI Approach  

To bring the real life benefits of generative AI technology to the Galaxy S24 series[2], we took a hybrid approach to our AI integration. AI offers so many possibilities, and we believe mobile devices are the primary access point for unlocking its potential as users around the globe continue to rely on their phone for most of their day to day needs.

The essential role that mobile devices play in everyday life means they are very personal items that people use during many critical and memorable moments. We understand these behaviors and believe smartphones should work harder so that users can truly make the most of important moments in a simple and intuitive way.

We believe our hybrid approach is the most practical and reliable solution to meet all these needs and puts Samsung ahead of the curve. We are providing users with a balance between the instant responsiveness and security of on-device AI, and the versatility of cloud-based AI through open collaborations with industry-leading partners in offering a variety of functions they need for daily life.

We made the ‘Live Translate’[3] feature on-device AI based, because voice calls are the most basic feature of a smartphone, yet also an intimate and private means of communication. To make this feature a reality, our R&D team worked day and night as part of a collaborative process that truly brought out the best in our teams. From determining the right size of AI language models, to training and testing in real-life scenarios, our R&D organisations within the MX business challenged themselves and pushed beyond the limits of what we thought was possible to get this feature running entirely on-device.

Samsung’s global R&D networks around the world, which are in charge of growing the best talents and developing core technologies in each region, have also played a pivotal role. Samsung Research Centers around the globe, including Poland, China, India and Vietnam have dedicated themselves to developing and expanding the languages[4] supported by Galaxy AI. And since this feature has been integrated into our on-device AI language translation model, users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about security issues when using Live Translate.

Chorus of Light is inspired by Galaxy AI, which made its debut this year on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, and is now available to millions of Australians[1]. Galaxy AI marks a new era in mobile experience, with advanced AI technology allowing consumers greater personalisation by focusing on communication, productivity and creativity. Features including Live Translate[2] and Chat Assist[3] streamline information access, conversation engagement and messaging, with aim of empowering Australians to unleash their creativity and productivity in new ways and enabling barrier-free communication.

An interactive journey, Chorus of Light, will showcase the festival’s theme of ‘Humanity’, inviting visitors to record a personal message of hope for the future in one of the 16 languages available with Galaxy AI. Each attendee’s message will then be live translated and expressed as a dazzling light display in a co-created visual masterpiece by renowned international media artist, Susan Kosti. Beyond demonstrating the innovative power of AI, Samsung’s Chorus of Light will offer visitors the opportunity to capture a brilliant Nightography portrait with a stunning interactive backdrop, as on-site staff using Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones will be on hand to help festivalgoers capture the ultimate Vivid Sydney memento; one that’s ready-made for social media feeds.

Inspired by Galaxy AI, which facilitates real-time language translation for seamless communication, the immersive art installation that is Chorus of Light aims to unite humanity through recorded hopes for the future via a three phased journey, which throughout visually expresses the power of the latest technology and innovation from Samsung. The recorded messages will later feature in an original track produced by multi-genre Australian musician and beat maker, Ta-ku, known for his creative and emotion-rich style. The track will be crafted entirely from vocal samples recorded within the Chorus of Light installation and launched on Samsung’s YouTube on 12 June for the world to hear.

• The Customer Journey: Visitors to Chorus of Light will be able to decide between two different pathways to experience the activation. The express route offers an elevated Nightography portrait opportunity on the viewing platform as well as the chance to try out Galaxy AI features like 100x AI zoom and Photo Assist. The premium route takes users on the complete journey, including the translated light crescendo moment and a Galaxy AI Chat Assist experience in the exit tunnel.
• The Galaxy AI Welcome Tunnel: Visitors entering the installation’s premium route will start at the Galaxy AI welcome tunnel, which beautifully introduces the Chorus of Light concept with light, animations and audio, inspired by the look and feel of Samsung’s One UI.
• The Light Portrait Area: Next, they will pass through the light portrait area and into the centre of the exhibit, where they can record their message and have it translated into light.
• Chat Assist Exit Tunnel: They’ll finish in the Chat Assist exit tunnel, a visual gallery of tone-shifting text.

After a five year hiatus, Samsung is marking its return to the festival with an interactive installation inspired by Galaxy AI, first unveiled on Samsung’s record-breaking Galaxy S24 series earlier this year. Samsung’s previous installations at Vivid Sydney have set a high standard, becoming must-see attractions that have been embraced by festivalgoers. Its first activation – called The Night Reimagined – saw an epic two-story labyrinth set up on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House, showcasing photography features and allowing users to create an AR emoji that could be projected on Luna Park Sydney’s iconic face.

Its second year at the festival saw two large-scale activations transform over 3,000 square meters of Circular Quay’s First Fleet Park into an “Electric Playground” and “Samsung Galaxy Studio”, offering uniquely sharable experiences.

• Interpreter can instantly translate live conversations through a user-friendly split-screen view, allowing people standing opposite each other to read a text translation of what the other person is saying.
• Chat Assist can help perfect conversational tones by generating context-aware suggestions to ensure communication sounds as it was intended, whether it’s a polite message to a coworker or a short catchy phrase for a social media caption.[3]
• Note Assist can create AI-generated summaries, pre-formatted templates and cover pages, elevating your day-to-day productivity.[4]
• Transcript Assist uses AI and Speech-to-Text technology to transcribe, summarise and even translate voice recordings.[5]

Starting in April and rolling out over the upcoming months, the newly supported Galaxy AI languages and dialects will each be available for download as a language pack from the Settings app.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will unleash new mobile experiences with Galaxy AI at Mobile World Congress 2024, which kicks off today in Barcelona, Spain. Visitors to the Samsung booth experience Galaxy AI hands-on across all Galaxy products, centered around Galaxy S24 series which leads the way into a new era of mobile AI, Galaxy AI.

Introducing a New Era of Mobile AI

Samsung present the AI features of Galaxy S24 series that empower user’s communication and creativity, brought to life in everyday scenarios at the booth. This includes features such as Live Translate[3] powered by on-device AI for two-way, real-time translations of phone calls that defy language barriers for selected languages. Circle to Search with Google[4] enables quick and easy, more intuitive searching to make new discoveries with just a simple gesture. Also on show will be Note Assist[5], which simplifies and organises complex texts, as well as Generative Edit[6], which allows a user to freely resize or reposition subjects within photos for more creative freedom.

Samsung also organised a space where visitors check out the powerful camera performance of Galaxy S24 series. In the zone resembling a dim concert hall, close-up shots can be taken of small objects placed on stage to utilise the Nightography capabilities of Galaxy S24 series, upgraded to be more stable in low light thanks to Galaxy’s AI-based ProVisual Engine[7].

These Galaxy AI capabilities are soon to be expanded to existing Galaxy models, including Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series, as well as Galaxy S23 series and S23 FE[8]. Displayed at the Samsung booth, connectivity features on Galaxy devices will demonstrate how users can elevate productivity seamlessly, such as easy transfer and editing of photos and videos between Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Tab S9.

More Connected Wellness Experiences, Powered by AI

Samsung will be displaying its intelligent health lineup at MWC, offering users even more personalised and seamless health experiences with the transformative power of AI, across even more devices. As part of this portfolio, Galaxy Ring is being unveiled as a new health form factor that simplifies everyday wellness, supporting smarter and healthier living via a more connected digital wellness platform – Samsung Health.[9]

Samsung is also set to exhibit upcoming intelligent health features. For example, My Vitality Score[10] offers personalised health insights based on multiple factors including Sleep, Activity, Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability, while Booster Card[11] helps make each day healthier by tracking predefined goals and delivering actionable insights. Visitors will be able to see the benefits of these features on Galaxy Watch6 series paired with Galaxy S24, prior to public availability later this year[12].

Leveraging Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem, Samsung is showcasing how the home can be turned into a place for healthy living[13]. Control compatible connected lights to automatically turn off and on for a more optimal sleep[14] or set alerts as a reminder to take medicine. It also allows a user to track exercises and measure heart rate and calories burned in real-time while following a fitness video on a connected TV, all at the same time.

Developing the Galaxy S24 series has been the most rewarding period of my career. As an engineer, I have witnessed many examples of incredible innovations, but AI is the most transformative technology of the century. Few engineers get the chance to be involved in something with such seismic potential. It brings great change, not only for Samsung and the mobile industry, but for all humankind.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the availability of Galaxy AI[1] features on more Galaxy devices through a new One UI 6.1 update engineered to further the democratization of mobile AI. The update will be available across the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series, starting to roll out in Australia from April. Aligning with the recently launched Galaxy S24 series[2], this update elevates the standard of users’ mobile AI experience through a hybrid approach that combines on-device and cloud-based AI.

The features include the ability to translate messages in 13 different languages using Chat Assist[3]. Galaxy users can experience the power of real-time interactions through Live Translate[4], which provides voice and text translations for phone calls. With Interpreter, users can also engage in spontaneous conversations with locals while traveling as the split-screen feature generates text translations for live conversations.

Improved Productivity

The broader integration of Galaxy AI across the Galaxy ecosystem also enables seamless user experience in day-to-day tasks on AI-supported models, allowing for new levels of efficiency. Search functions are improved through Circle to Search with Google[5], which generates intuitive search results with a swift circle-motioned gesture. Organization features such as Note Assist[6] allow users to create formats, generate summaries and translate notes, while Browsing Assist[7] enables individuals to stay up to speed faster by generating comprehensive summaries of websites. Transcript Assist can also easily transcribe meeting recordings and generate summaries and translations.

Unstoppable Creativity for Your Inner Artist

With Galaxy AI, Samsung is doubling down on its role in unlocking individuals’ creative potential. Galaxy’s latest update delivers a suite of Galaxy AI tools that encourages creative freedom even after a photo is taken. Through Generative Edit[8], AI-supported devices can easily resize, reposition, or realign objects in photos to perfect a great shot. Users can also polish any photo faster and easier than ever before on a Galaxy device with Edit Suggestion[9]. No need for multiple re-shots as Instant Slow-mo[10] can generate additional frames for slow-motion videos to capture action-packed moments.

Creativity and personalisation do not stop there. Customising Galaxy devices is even easier than before through AI-generated wallpapers, enabling AI-supported devices to bring users’ creativity to life.
