Samsung Electronics Australia has today launched Clash of Commuters, a new experience that offers gamers the opportunity to play a uniquely Australian and public transport inspired map in Fortnite Creative[3], featuring national icons from the humble Bin Chicken to a Sydney train.

With 44% of Aussie gamers admitting they game while commuting to pass the time, the Clash of Commuters map enables players to experience an all-new Fortnite Creative island and allows them to defend the very thing that they commonly game on; Australian public transport.

From 2 May to 30 May, players will also have the opportunity to win Samsung swag IRL by participating in the Clash of Commuters competition[4]. Gamers will need to defend an Aussie public bus across 5 checkpoints as it meanders through a dystopian Australian commute, complete with bin chickens, servos and caffeine-starved commuters, for their chance to win. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, with its realistic graphics, lifelike visuals, and  Samsung’s most powerful chipset to date, has been designed to meet the high performance demands of gamers. These devices will be hidden throughout the map, with players able to unlock special bonuses if they find them.

The player who completes all five rounds of the Clash of Commuters campaign in the shortest amount of time (The Shortest Haul) will be eligible to win a Samsung gaming pack worth over $8,000, which includes a 55” QN90D NEO QLED TV, 57” Odyssey Neo G95NC Curved Monitor, Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Buds2 Pro. There will also be additional prize packs for the fastest player to complete the campaign on a mobile device (The Ultimate On-The-Go Gamer), the most side quest phones acquired (Seat Scavenger), as well as four winners drawn at random from all completed time submissions (Regular Riders).

Recent research conducted by Samsung Electronics Australia sheds light on the preferences of Aussie gamers, with 48% listing smartphones as the device they game on most frequently, surpassing consoles (26%), desktops and laptops (24%), and other devices (3%). Moreover, for over 55% of Australian gamers, gaming serves as a means of relaxation, with one-third saying they game as a means of de-stressing.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has released findings from its Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) Gaming Insight Study, which found that 7 in 10 online consumers in the region are gamers. Conducted in partnership with ONE Esports, over 6,800 consumers aged 18 to 49 across seven markets (Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) were surveyed in the last quarter of 2022[1], showing a widespread love for gaming whether at home or on-the-go.

Across the region, playing to de-stress and relax was cited as the top reason for gaming (74%), with an average of 7 hours a week spent on gaming. Most gamers (92%) preferred to engage in gameplay from the comfort of their home, and over half of gamers (58%) were found to spend an average of USD $30 monthly on gaming-related purchases such as exclusive online content, esports tournament tickets, streamer subscription, skins, and merchandise collectibles.

The study identified four distinct gamer personalities among gaming fans in this region – Hardcore Gamers, Gaming Enthusiasts, Casual Gamers & Spectators, as well as Casual Gamers, based on their total time spent playing games and watching gaming or esports content. The study found that more than half of gamers surveyed (56%) indulge in this pastime at least a few times a week, consisting of Hardcore Gamers and Gaming Enthusiasts (See chart below).

Gaming Enthusiasts and Hardcore Gamers are highly vested in their hobby, where their top gaming-related activities include watching gaming videos, discussing gaming with others, reading gaming updates and news, spending money on gaming-related items and lastly, following gaming personalities on social media (see chart below).

Innovation beyond expectations in 2023

As announced at CES 2023, Samsung’s new Odyssey lineup will include the 57” Odyssey Neo G9, Samsung’s first single monitor with dual ultra-high definition resolution. Samsung will also introduce OLED displays to the Odyssey range by way of the Odyssey OLED G8, and Odyssey OLED G9.
