When it comes to travel, discovering hidden local attractions and engaging meaningfully with people and places can transform experiences into core memories.

From planning your itinerary to chatting with locals and uncovering the history behind iconic landmarks, here’s how you can unlock better travels with Galaxy AI.

Seamless communication for every moment

Handle calls and messages with ease using Live Translate (left) and Chat Assist (right) to communicate clearly across languages.

Now imagine you’ve just landed in Korea and need to confirm your hotel stay. You’re about to make a phone call, but the language barrier makes this simple question feel daunting. Live Translate[2] is your secret weapon. Built into your Galaxy device[3], it allows real-time audio translation with the person you’re speaking to, accompanied by a transcript on-screen, for stress-free communication. Offering support for a total of 30 languages and dialects, Live Translate enables you to enjoy nothing but smooth conversations when you’re out exploring.

If you’re texting instead, Chat Assist[4] can help enhance sentence structure, refines expressions, corrects grammatical errors and even generates complete sentences to save time while adjusting the tone to match your personal style. This makes sure you can communicate effortlessly with someone in multiple languages, with your message coming across as polite.

Technology is evolving at high speed, becoming more intelligent by the second. These rapid advancements have brought Galaxy AI[1] to life, unlocking new levels of productivity, creativity and communication. But as mobile AI grows more capable, it also raises new concerns about privacy and control.

Samsung is addressing both in two key ways: by designing Galaxy AI experiences with built-in safeguards that protect user data from the ground up, and by applying AI to strengthen mobile security and privacy protections. While both approaches are essential, building AI that handles data responsibly remains the most urgent priority.

Transparency and choice are the principles driving this work. That’s where Galaxy’s intuitive, easy-to-use privacy settings come in, helping you understand what data is used in AI processing, how it’s handled, and how you can control it. These protections empower you to make your own rules for your mobile experience — and to stay safe while you do.

Advanced Settings for Advanced AI

This freedom of choice comes into play for Galaxy AI experiences. With AI increasingly becoming a part of what we do, it’s only natural to want more control over how your personal data is used in relation to it. Enter Galaxy AI privacy safeguards: a set of policies and protections that go above and beyond to make sure you’re informed and protected when leveraging Galaxy AI.

One of the ways we champion user control is through our powerful suite of AI tools that can operate on-device[2], keeping your data securely in your hands. Whether you’re using communication tools like Live Translate[3] and Interpreter[4] to break down language barriers, or editing tools like Audio Eraser[5] to stretch the limits of creativity, inputs are kept within the confines of your phone. These features offer a safe, responsive mobile experience that runs directly on your device, right at your fingertips — working alongside Galaxy AI’s privacy protections to give you greater visibility and control over your data.

Since launching Galaxy AI, our vision has been driven by a commitment to openness and user choice. That’s why we chose a hybrid approach, introducing a powerful combination of on-device and cloud-based AI. This ensures seamless usability and allows users to benefit from the full power of AI for even the most complex tasks. Advanced features such as Generative Edit[6] offer on-device capabilities and also tap into cloud-based AI as needed for more processing-intensive edits. With Galaxy, all AI experiences are designed with your privacy in mind — even those that utilise remote servers. No matter what feature or what settings you choose, personal data is never stored long-term or used for AI training — whether processed on-device or on the cloud. Plus, with Advanced Intelligence settings[7], managing your privacy is as simple as tapping a button. You can even choose how your personal information is processed, including the option to disable online processing for AI features.

Privacy is the foundation of Galaxy AI, and thanks to our growing list of on-device AI features alongside powerful settings options, so is user control.

Intuitive Controls for Enhanced Visibility

In addition to AI-powered features, it’s critical that selecting privacy settings be easy and intuitive, no matter which mobile experience you choose. Galaxy’s Security and Privacy dashboard enables ultimate control over your data, including who sees it and how it is used, with a fool-proof interface. You can do it all — from viewing and updating app permissions, controls and data-sharing functions, to identifying which data could be at risk through intuitive safety status icons. With Permission Usage, you can even keep track of which apps may have recently accessed your data. This level of behind-the-curtain visibility across settings is unique to Galaxy, making it easier than ever to see how all Galaxy experiences are secured and built to function according to your preferences.

Another cornerstone of Galaxy privacy settings is Auto Blocker[8], a key feature that empowers you to secure your mobile devices without sacrificing usability. Auto Blocker protects your device by checking for malware and other security threats, while blocking malicious activity. It prevents unauthorised app installations, blocks commands and updates via USB, and mitigates zero click attacks with Message Guard.

For those looking for an even stronger line of defense against today’s cyber threats, Maximum Restrictions[9] offers an additional suite of device protections. These added measures offer an extra layer of user control, giving you the choice to block 2G service and prevent data from being intercepted when connected to unsafe networks. They also prevent unintended automatic reconnection to certain Wi-Fi networks that may be less secure.

With Samsung Knox protection and privacy settings that are easy to understand, you hold the power to decide how your data is handled — whether shared or kept completely on-device. Looking ahead, Samsung will further advance AI-powered security technologies to make privacy protections smarter, more adaptive, and even more seamless. And as AI continues to evolve, Samsung remains committed to building secure experiences rooted in transparency and choice — now and in the future.

[1] Galaxy AI features are currently free of charge, with any specific plans for premium AI services to be decided in close coordination with our partners. There are currently no plans to charge for Galaxy AI features, however different terms may apply to other AI features provided by third parties, at the end of 2025.

[2] Samsung Account login required. Processing data only on your device allows advanced intelligence features to operate locally, rather than online. Enabling this option may limit the functionality of certain AI features that rely on online data processing for advanced capabilities.

[3] Network connection and Samsung Account required. Currently limited to select languages only. See website for full list of available languages. Live Translate feature must be enabled and language package must be downloaded prior to use. Only available on the pre-installed Samsung Phone app and certain supported apps. Supported apps include Whatsapp, Google Meet, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Signal. List of supported apps may vary from country. Translation might not be accurate

[4] Samsung Account required. Currently limited to select languages only. See website for full list of languages. Language package must be downloaded prior to use. Translation might not be accurate.

[5] Results may vary per video depending on how sounds present in the video. Samsung Account login required. Six types of sound can be detected; voices, music, wind, nature, crowd and noise. The actual sound detection may vary depending on audio source, and the condition of the video. Accuracy of results is not guaranteed.

[6] Generative Edit feature for Photo Assist requires a network connection and Samsung Account login. Editing with Generative Edit may result in a resized photo. A visible watermark is overlaid on the image output upon saving in order to indicate that the image is generated by AI. The accuracy and reliability of the generated output is not guaranteed.

[7] Availability may vary by device model, OS and/or market.

[8] This feature helps provide defense, blocking unauthorised app installs, restricting command-based attacks and mitigating risks.

[9] Maximum Restrictions prevents automatic, unintended reconnection to less secure networks, which may include Open, Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE) or Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). This protects users from device traffic that may be exposed or intercepted.

Galaxy AI currently supports 16 languages[2], and by the end of the year that number will go up to 20 with these new additions. This update means even more users will be able to lower language barriers and step into a larger world with the power of Galaxy AI. The new languages and dialects will be available for download as language packs from the Settings app of compatible Galaxy devices.

As Samsung continues to deliver premium mobile AI experiences, we visit Samsung Research centers around the world to learn how Galaxy AI is enabling more users to maximise their potential. Galaxy AI features now supports 16 languages, so more people can expand their language capabilities, even when offline, thanks to on-device translation in features such as Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist. But what does AI language development involve? This series examines the challenges of working with mobile AI and how we overcame them. First up, we head to Indonesia to learn where one begins teaching AI to speak a new language.

The first step is establishing targets, according to the team at Samsung R&D Institute Indonesia (SRIN). “Each language demands a different way to process this, so we dive deep to understand the linguistic needs and the unique conditions of our country,” says Junaidillah Fadlil, head of AI at SRIN, whose team recently added Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) support to Galaxy AI. “Local language development has to be led by insight and science, so every process for adding languages to Galaxy AI starts with us planning what information we need and can legally and ethically obtain.”

Galaxy AI features such as Live Translate perform three core processes: automatic speech recognition (ASR), neural machine translation (NMT) and text-to-speech (TTS). Each process needs a distinct set of information.

ASR, for instance, needs extensive recordings of speech in numerous environments, each paired with an accurate text transcription. Varying background noise levels help account for different environments. “It’s not enough just to add noises to recordings,” explains Muchlisin Adi Saputra, the team’s ASR lead. “In addition to the language data we obtained from authorised 3rd party partners, we must go out into coffee shops or working environments to record our own voices. This allows us to authentically capture unique sounds from real life, like people calling out or the clattering of keyboards.”

The ever-changing nature of languages must also be considered. Saputra adds: “We need to keep up to date with the latest slang and how it is used, and mostly we find it on social media!”

Next, NMT requires translation training data. “Translating Bahasa Indonesia is challenging,” says Muhamad Faisal, the team’s NMT lead. “Its extensive use of contextual and implicit meanings relies on social and situational cues, so we need numerous translated texts that the AI could reference for new words, foreign words, proper nouns, and idioms – any information that helps AI understand the context and rules of communication.”

TTS then requires recordings that cover a range of voices and tones, with additional context on how parts of words sound in different circumstances. “Good voice recordings could do half the job and cover all the required phonemes (units of sound in speech) for the AI model,” adds Harits Abdurrohman, TTS lead. “If a voice actor did a great job in the earlier phase, the focus shifts to refining the AI model to clearly pronounce specific words.”

Stronger Together

It takes vast resources to plan for much data, and SRIN worked closely with linguistics experts. “This challenge requires creativity, resourcefulness and expertise in both Bahasa Indonesia and machine learning,” Fadlil reflects. “Samsung’s philosophy of open collaboration played a big part in getting the job done, as did our scale of operations and history of AI development.”

Working with other Samsung Research centres around the world, the SRIN team was able to quickly adopt best practices and overcome the complexities of establishing data targets. Furthermore, collaboration was good for advancing not only technology but also culture. When the SRIN team joined their counterparts in Bangalore, India, they observed the local fasting customs, creating deeper connections and expanding their understanding of different cultures.

For the team, Galaxy AI’s language expansion project took on a new significance. “We are particularly proud of our achievements here as this was our first AI project, and it won’t be our last as we continue to refine our models and improve the quality of output,” Fadlil concludes. “This expansion not only reflects our values of openness but also respects and incorporates our cultural identities through language.”

By Won-joon Choi, EVP & Head of R&D Office, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

We are at the beginning of the most exciting, and probably one of the most historic moments in technology. The era of mobile AI is here – which for Samsung opened up by the introduction of Galaxy AI[1] features on the Galaxy S24 series, our first AI phone.

Revolutionising Mobile Experiences with a Hybrid AI Approach

To bring the real life benefits of generative AI technology to the Galaxy S24 series[2], we took a hybrid approach to our AI integration. AI offers so many possibilities, and we believe mobile devices are the primary access point for unlocking its potential as users around the globe continue to rely on their phone for most of their day to day needs.

The essential role that mobile devices play in everyday life means they are very personal items that people use during many critical and memorable moments. We understand these behaviors and believe smartphones should work harder so that users can truly make the most of important moments in a simple and intuitive way.

We believe our hybrid approach is the most practical and reliable solution to meet all these needs and puts Samsung ahead of the curve. We are providing users with a balance between the instant responsiveness and security of on-device AI, and the versatility of cloud-based AI through open collaborations with industry-leading partners in offering a variety of functions they need for daily life.

Expanding Possibilities with On-device AI

We made the ‘Live Translate’[3] feature on-device AI based, because voice calls are the most basic feature of a smartphone, yet also an intimate and private means of communication. Samsung has committed to empowering users to communicate without language barriers, while at the same time ensuring every communication is safe and private.

To make this feature a reality, our R&D team worked day and night as part of a collaborative process that truly brought out the best in our teams. From determining the right size of AI language models, to training and testing in real-life scenarios, our R&D organisations within the MX business challenged themselves and pushed beyond the limits of what we thought was possible to get this feature running entirely on-device.

Samsung’s global R&D networks around the world, which are in charge of growing the best talents and developing core technologies in each region, have also played a pivotal role. Samsung Research Centers around the globe, including Poland, China, India and Vietnam have dedicated themselves to developing and expanding the languages[4] supported by Galaxy AI. Languages are very cultural, contemporary, and localised so to help people break down language barriers and communicate more naturally, the role of our local R&D offices is even more crucial in opening up new possibilities for users in more regions than ever before.

All these efforts have enabled Samsung to offer something completely new which I’m excited to share. Soon, Samsung is extending the power of Galaxy AI beyond Samsung’s own native calling app by expanding Live Translate to other third-party message apps to support voice calls[5]. So you can stay in contact with friends or colleagues, communicating on your favorite apps in multiple languages.

And since this feature has been integrated into our on-device AI language translation model, users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about security issues when using Live Translate.

I expect that more and more mobile AI features will be incorporated inside mobile devices as the intelligent computing power of the latest chips – particularly NPUs – advances at a blazing fast speed, along with other technologies. This will enable more people to embrace AI and make every day more convenient while offering greater peace of mind.

Growing Galaxy AI for Tomorrow’s Needs, Today

This exciting news is all part of the extension of our commitment to Galaxy AI and entering the next phase of the mobile AI era. The introduction of Galaxy AI on Galaxy S24 series was only the start. To deliver a completely new and unique AI experience, we will further optimise the Galaxy AI experience for the upcoming foldable devices. Our foldables are the most versatile and flexible form factor in Samsung Galaxy and when combined with Galaxy AI, these two complementary technologies will together unlock all new possibilities.

Samsung is also committed to expanding Galaxy AI experiences across the broader Galaxy ecosystem in a way that only Samsung can. As the mobile AI era moves forward at a rapid pace, Samsung is accelerating mobile AI innovations to meet the needs of not only today, but tomorrow.

[1] Samsung does not make any promises, assurances or guarantees as to the accuracy, completeness or reliability of the output provided by AI features. Certain Galaxy AI features requires Samsung and Google Account. Internet connection may be required to use some features. AI Features will be provided free of charge until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices.

[2] Some AI features from Galaxy S24 series may not be available at previous generation models.

[3] Network connection and Samsung Account required. Currently limited to select languages only. See website https://www.samsung.com/au/smartphones/galaxy-s24-ultra for full list of available languages. Live Translate feature must be enabled and language package must be downloaded prior to use. Only available on the pre-installed Samsung Phone app. Translation might not be accurate.

[4] Supported languages include Chinese, English (India, United Kingdom, United States), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Mexico, Spain, United States), Thai and Vietnamese.

[5] The availability of this feature in Australia is yet to be confirmed.
