New Functionalities Alter Kitchen Experiences

The Smart Forward updates introduce an array of new functionalities designed to help enhance the user experience and appliance performance. The Family Hub, a touch screen panel installed on the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator[4] for food management, entertainment and communication, will now come with Quick Share, Buds Auto Switch [5] and Fridge Call[6], new features that are designed to significantly improve connectivity and usability.[7]

Quick Share makes sharing memories and recipes while in the kitchen easier than ever by allowing users to quickly send photos to the Family Hub screen directly from their mobile device[8] with just a few clicks.

Finally, Australians can receive phone calls with Fridge Call directly on the Family Hub using its microphone and speaker, eliminating the need to move to a different room to find their phone. This is especially convenient when users’ hands are occupied to cooking, cleaning and dishwashing, making it much easier to multitask while remaining connected. Perhaps best of all, these new features will be available on refrigerator models with Family Hub produced from 2017 onward rather than new models only.

Quick Remote,[9] an additional feature in which a user’s mobile phone becomes a remote control for connected Samsung appliances, is being expanded across refrigerators produced since 2023, regardless of whether they include a Family Hub screen or not.[10] Other connected appliances include washing machines and air conditioners also produced since 2023.[11] All users need to do is simply move close to a SmartThings-connected appliance,[12] and a remote control menu for the appliance will appear on the quick panel of the Galaxy phone screen being used. This seamless integration ensures that users can control their home environment with ease.

Future-proofing Home Appliances to the Next Level

Apart from making the user experience more seamless, Samsung is also focused on future-proofing existing appliances. The upgraded Bixby[13] will understand commands with multiple intentions and remember the most recent conversation.[14] This advanced functionality transforms the way users interact with their appliances, making voice commands more intuitive and responsive.[15] Samsung is also providing the update to two products launched in Australia in 2024: Bespoke AI Laundry Combo and, Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI.

Additionally, Bixby now opens doors for 2024 refrigerators with Family Hub upon verbal request, without the need for wake-up commands like “Hi Bixby.” Users can simply say, “Open the refrigerator door.” This functionality offers users an incredible level of convenience and hands-free operation.[16]

Safer Use and Low Energy Consumption[17]

In terms of safety and energy-savings, Samsung is rolling out updates to older models — including refrigerators made as far back as 2021 — because the importance of safety does not diminish with time.[18]  After an event of a power outage and once resumed with power, refrigerators are designed to detect and notify users via the SmartThings app when internal temperature is high, making users aware of potential issues that could affect the freshness of their stored food.

Additionally, users can now choose different chimes for open door notifications, giving them greater control over their appliance settings. Furthermore, users can maintain a peaceful home environment by putting ice makers in sleep mode, preventing them from working during the night and creating the disruptive sound of ice falling into the tray while users sleep.

Bespoke AI Heat PumpCombo will also see an Optimal Scheduling function added. This feature delays the start of the appliance to not have it run during peak energy usage hours or periods of high carbon intensity has been added to Bespoke AI Heat PumpCombo[19]. Additionally, the 7-inch AI Home on the Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo is designed to automatically switch to power-save mode during wash cycles, further assisting with smart energy savings.[20]

These updates reflect Samsung’s broader strategy of providing value to customers by enhancing the products they already own. By continuously improving the functionality and performance of its appliances, Samsung ensures that users do not have to worry about their devices becoming obsolete. This approach not only helps safeguard customers’ investments but also aligns with the company’s efforts to reduce the need for frequent replacements.

Samsung’s updated home appliances will be showcased at IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, from September 6 to 10, where visitors will be able to see and experience each feature.

Private Sharing with Quick Share

Ever been in a situation like this? You want to share pictures of your newborn baby, or a video from your recent holiday, but don’t want to risk them somehow ending up online or visible to anyone other than those you intended.

Samsung Galaxy has a built-in solution to this problem: Quick Share’s Private Sharing, a privacy-preserving file-sharing function that lets you share your data with peace of mind.

With Private Sharing, you and you alone own the data. You can ensure that only the designated recipients can open the files you send – no one else. You can also set permissions and expiration dates for the data, so it’s only viewable for a limited amount of time. Further, you can give read-only access without the ability to re-share; revoke the data access whenever you like; restrict screenshotting, and see when the recipient received and opened the file.

Private Sharing makes it safe and easy to share your content, and you can share up to 20 files at once with a total size of up to 200MB.[1] And of course, all your files are encrypted when shared, courtesy of blockchain-based encryption technology.

To use Private Sharing, select the file you want to send and tap the Share icon. Tap Quick Share, followed by the three dots for more options in the top right corner. Then select Turn on Private Sharing. Once the message has been sent, you can check what you’ve sent and change the expiration date or revoke sharing permissions.

No more worries about misfiring a private photo or file. With Quick Share’s Private Sharing, you’re in control of your data and whom you choose to share it with, with visibility into file share status every step of the way.

Data Protection with End-to-End Encryption

Starting with the Galaxy S24, Enhanced Data Protection offers additional protection for Galaxy devices when you sync or back up your data with Samsung Cloud.[2] This feature helps mitigate against the risk of data loss via end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which ensures data can only be encrypted or decrypted on your device and cannot be seen by anyone but you.

When you activate Enhanced Data Protection, you’ll be prompted to write down a recovery code to help prevent the loss of your data in the event you lose your device.

To use Enhanced Data Protection, open the Samsung Cloud app, tap the three dots for more options, choose Settings, and then Enhanced Data Protection. From here, you can choose to encrypt backup or synced data. Alternatively, you can open your device Settings and go to Security and Privacy to find this feature.

End-to-end encrypted data is only accessible on devices using the Enhanced Data Protection feature, and cannot be accessed by anyone else, including Samsung.

However, if the Gallery app on your smartphone fills up with photos while spending quality time with friends, there is no need to worry. To avoid the hassle of uploading all the photos to a messaging app or email and downloading them again, Quick Share provides simple file transfer in a matter of seconds.

The biggest advantage of Quick Share is that users can quickly share photos with nearby Galaxy devices in just a few taps regardless of the number and size of the files. With a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, users can send files to up to eight people at a time.[2]

Receiving files through Quick Share is simple, from set up to sending and reception. In order to use Quick Share, swipe down from the top of the screen of your Galaxy device and tap on the Quick Share icon from Quick Settings.

For those looking to try out Quick Share, here is how to use the feature in just a few, easy steps:

① Select the file to share à click Quick Share

Select a picture or video in the Gallery app or a file in a folder, and then click the Share icon. After pressing the Quick Share icon in the pop-up window, available Galaxy devices that can accept shared files appear.

② Select Galaxy user to transfer files → Receiving party accepts files

Galaxy devices that can accept files are listed according sharing preferences that the user has set in advance. When the other Galaxy device accepts the file transfer, the file is sent immediately. These shared files can be immediately found in the Quick Share folder created in the Gallery app without a separate download process.

2. Share Quickly and Seamlessly With Non-Galaxy Devices

What’s more, Quick Share makes file sharing easy not only between Galaxy devices but also with other smartphones.

When using Quick Share with non-Galaxy users, a Galaxy user can select the file they want to share via Quick Share and choose from the following options: Copy link, Share in an app and Share using QR code. If the user chooses to share the file using a QR code, the recipient can simply copy or scan the code and receive the file instantly on their smartphone or device. Additionally, files uploaded to the Samsung Cloud can be shared with others as well.

If Share in an app is selected, the link can be sent via a messenger right away, making it an effective way to share files to multiple people at once in a group chatroom. Additionally, users can send original photos and videos in high quality without worrying about deteriorated image quality due to file compression.

It is also worth noting that files uploaded to Samsung Cloud are automatically deleted after a certain period, improving security and user convenience.

3. Share Quickly With A Range of Devices Such as Tablets and Laptops

Quick Share can be used on any Galaxy device that comes with the feature. The instant file sharing feature allows files to move freely across smartphones and Galaxy tablets.

Sharing files between different types of Galaxy devices is also easy and frictionless. To send a file from your Galaxy smartphone to another Galaxy device, all you need to do is activate the Quick Share feature on both devices before selecting the files and recipient using Quick Share.

Share Safely With Private Share

When sharing files containing sensitive information, Samsung’s Private Share is there to help your share files securely.

Users can send a variety of files through Private Share, including images, video, audio and documents. 20 files of up to 200MB in total can be sent at once to a designated recipient using a phone number and identification number.

With Single Take, stay in the moment while you capture the moment using integrated AI technology. Single Take uses the camera system and AI to capture a number of photos and videos at once and recommends the best shot for you².

With an improved Night Mode on the Galaxy S10 series, and the addition of Night Hyperlapse on both Galaxy S10 and Note10 series³, you’ll be able to capture even more amazing photos and videos even in low light.

When you’ve captured that perfect image, Custom Filter lets you create your own filter with colors and styles you like from a favorite photo serving as inspiration. This creates a reusable filter that can be applied to future photos when captured.

For the aspiring filmmaker, Pro Video gives you even more control, allowing you to adjust settings like ISO, shutter speed and exposure level. You can also switch between the front and rear cameras while recording video.

Intelligent Gallery

This update also brings a variety of gallery features to help you organize your content. Thanks to AI technology, with Clean View enabled, the Gallery app automatically groups together similar shots of the same subject for a more organized gallery⁴. Users can easily review similar shots and select their favorite to serve as the photo group’s thumbnail. When viewing a photo in the gallery, you can zoom in on an image and press Quick Crop, located at the top left-hand corner, to crop photos to your desired size.

Easy Sharing Capabilities⁵

You can now share more content quickly. With Quick Share, you can see which of your contacts are nearby and share photos, videos, or even large files with multiple people. With Music Share, you can extend your paired Bluetooth connection and you don’t need to disconnect for a friend to play their music on a speaker or car stereo.
