Australian summer is a season characterised by long-days and unmissable sporting moments. While around 43 per-cent of Australians say they like to watch these moments at home on the TV to bond with family and friends[1], new insights from Samsung Australia reveal one in five respondents won’t invite guests around to their house because of on-screen glare[2]. In fact, over half Australians (58%) claim they HATE on-screen glare[3], with 53 per-cent of 18-35 year old viewers admitting to abandoning shows mid-way through due to distracting reflections[4].

Further Samsung insights reveal that half of respondents (49%) draw their curtains during the day to avoid on-screen glare – this number hitting 100% for respondents living in the Northern Territory[5]. Moreover, two in five (41%) respondents say they always turn off all the lights in the room before they watch television, while almost half (49%) of viewers aged 18-25 years must sit in a specific spot where the glare won’t ruin their show[6].

According to Simon Howe, Director- Audio Visual, Samsung Australia, living on one of the sunniest continents in the world is usually a fact Australians get to brag about. However, as Australians increase their appetite for bigger TV screen sizes[7], more people are becoming fed-up with having to rearrange furniture and performing ‘lights-out’ rituals around the house before they can relax in front of the television.

Responding to consumer demand, Samsung developed a ‘made for Australian homes’ Glare-free display technology that uses an embossed coating to scatter ambient light across wider diffusion patterns, providing reflection-free viewing experiences, day and night[8]. The certified result reduces on-screen reflections while maintaining the incredible brightness, object sharpness, and colour accuracy Samsung TVs are renowned for.

“For around 100 years, the television has brought Australians together to watch moments that matter and to unwind in the comfort of their home. Over the years, modern home designs have made our living spaces brighter while our TV screens have gotten bigger, taking on-screen glare from being a mild annoyance to a daily frustration,” said Mr. Howe.

“Samsung’s Glare-Free technology isn’t just a technical innovation; it’s a response to how Australians live and is based on a belief that the technology in our homes should work with the environment it’s placed in, not against it.”

In 2025, the TV continues to be the heart of the Australian home with almost three-quarters (72%)[9] of Australians agreeing their TV plays a vital role in their daily lives. New Samsung insights reveal nearly a quarter (23%) of respondents would buy a bigger TV if glare from windows wasn’t an issue while over a third (37%) are willing to swap their current TV for a glare-free option tomorrow[10].

Winner of 2025 Canstar Blue Innovation Excellence Award for being a “game-changing breakthrough” with the “potential to improve the everyday lives of customers”, Samsung’s Glare-free display technology is available on Samsung OLED S95F, Neo QLED 8K QN990F, Neo QLED 8K QN900F, Neo QLED QN90F, The Frame Pro, and The Frame. With screen sizes across the Glare-free TV line-up spanning 43-inches up to 98-inches, Samsung has a Glare-free TV option to suit various Australian lifestyles.

Samsung is globally known for its innovative TV technology, each year aiming to improve the picture quality with the latest Neo QLED 8K and the state-of-the-art MICRO LED. Whether it’s backlight control and contrast levels or calibration and depth enhancing, all of Samsung’s features work together to present pristine image quality.

This year’s Neo QLED 8K lineup includes features that produce its most “real life” images yet, taking its picture quality to another level. Between the updated Neural Quantum Processor 8K, the new AI upscaling feature and the new calibration app, a consumer’s on-screen experience becomes virtually true to life, allowing them to easily manage their on-screen experience in a much more personal manner.[1]

To fully grasp the technologies and features behind the 2022 Neo QLED 8K range, Samsung Newsroom is showcasing them in a dynamic graphic format for easy comprehension.

14-bit Contrast Mapping

Image simulated for illustrative purposes.

The 2022 Neo QLED 8K panels are built to provide extreme details in all types of scenes with the newly added 14-bit contrast mapping, building on top of the existing 12-bit control offered in 2021. The result is a new 8K screen that is capable of showing extraordinary picture quality with more contrast and control over details.[2] As shown above, 14-bit contrast mapping allows us to see the fine details on the surface of the water as well as the granular texture of the rocks under water.

Real Depth Enhancer

Compared to Samsung’s Crystal UHD TV range. Image simulated for illustrative purposes.

When the eye is focused on the object, it directs its attention to the object, focusing on the sharpness, clarity and texture of the object while maintaining the background. The 2022 Samsung Neo QLED 8K’s Neural Quantum Processor 8K acts quite similarly through its new feature, the Real Depth Enhancer, which increases overall contrast and definition of the object — creating a sense of depth and making the images pop.

As you can see in this example, the Real Depth Enhancer naturally guides the consumers’ eyes to focus on the object in front of them, creating depth and allowing the rhinoceros to truly stand out from the background.

Smart Calibration

Image simulated for illustrative purposes. Sequence shortened.

With a new year of image quality improvements, comes a new sense of control for Samsung Neo QLED 8K. Now, viewers can calibrate and optimize their display from the menu bar or through the Smart Calibration on the Smart Things app on their smartphone.[3] With Basic Mode, the app offers calibrated images in as little as 30 seconds, while Professional Mode offers thorough image calibration and optimization within 5 to 8 minutes. Both modes require a simple one-step process from the users’ part to optimize the on-screen image. As shown here, the Professional Mode’s enhancement is very apparent, allowing Neo QLED 8K viewers to take advantage of its premium hardware and AI upscaling technology.[4]

[1] Compared to Samsung’s 2021 Neo QLED lineup.

[2] Compared to Samsung’s Neo QLED 8K Smart TV – QN900A.

[3] Requires Galaxy S, Note, Z Flip or Z Fold series models released after January 2019, or an iPhone that supports Face ID. Supported models may differ depending on the situation. For more information, please check the product manual at samsung.com/support

[4] Picture quality of upscaled content will vary depending on the quality and resolution of source content.
