Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has today revealed new research that finds Australians are using smart technology to enhance their everyday lives, with up to 80 per cent of Gen MZs (Millennials and Gen Z) surveyed are using smart TVs, phones, tablets, refrigerators, washer, dryers and vacuums to help care for their loved ones[1]. As smart technology – spanning intelligent products and connected ecosystem solutions – becomes embedded in daily life, new research from Samsung reveals Gen MZ are increasingly interested in finding creative, connected solutions to care for people, pets, plants and everything in between.

The research also found that over a third of Gen MZ feel smart tech makes them feel more assured (38 per cent), secure (37 per cent) and connected (36 per cent). From smart TVs that help families stay entertained and informed, to AI-powered appliances that take the guesswork out of daily chores.

 “Smart technology is redefining the way Australians look after their loved ones and the things they care most about – from kids and parents to pets and plants. Our insights tell us Gen MZ are already embracing smart devices to support daily life, and it’s clear that connected living is no longer a future concept, but a current reality. Smart technology – a growing household necessity

As connected devices becoming increasingly common in Australian households, tech-savvy Gen MZs are at the forefront – collectively spending an average of $9.2 billion in the last year[2].

Gen MZ are harnessing smart technology to support a wide range of care with top 5 being, partners (58%), dogs (52%), children (46%), plants (38%) and cats (31%). Gen MZ are redefining home life with smart, intuitive technology. Turning connected living from novelty to necessity by simplifying busy lives and making homes more responsive to their needs.

Smart technology relieves parenting stress

In the busyness of modern family life, Gen MZ parents[3]are turning to smart tech to bring a sense of calm and control. Over a third (34 per cent) admitting to using smart technology to help organise their day, and stay connected (36 per cent) when caring for loved ones. From streamlining the day to day to entertaining the kids, more than half (53 per cent) of Gen MZ parents reveal they use TVs, phones or tablets as tools to entertain or educate their children, suggesting a willingness for smart technology to assist with parenting duties – and the trend is only growing. In fact, over half of Australian parents  (51 per cent) have spent up to $2,000 on smart devices within the past 12 months with a further 78% planning to invest further on smart technology over the next five years, revealing a strong appetite for connected solutions that can help make caring a little easier.

Creative ways to care smarter for your pets

Samsung’s technology can help cater for unique needs, like those of ‘paw-rents’ who are using smart TVs to entertain their fur babies. A third (30 per cent) of pawrents say they use screen time to keep their pets entertained, or to calm them when their pet is stressed. Cartoons are the go-to genre (37 per cent), followed by music videos (27 per cent) and sports (27 per cent). With a quarter of those using screen time (25%) admitting their pets are movie buffs with feature films preferred.

Beyond entertainment, smart tech is also helping paw-rents create a happy home for their pets (30 per cent). From robot vacuums (used by 26 per cent) to smart cameras and monitors (24 per cent) that allow for them to check in whilst they are out and about. Through open ecosystem platforms like Samsung SmartThings, Gen MZ can bring these devices together – scheduling cleaning, streaming calming content, or receiving pet-specific alerts, all from one app. This level of smart integration is helping Gen MZ pawrents feel more connected to their pets, even when they’re apart.

In addition, city based pawrents use smart technology when caring for their pets (34 per cent) over pet owners in regional areas (20 per cent), despite Samsung research showing pawrents are more incident in regional locations (82% vs. 70% in metro).

A growing generation of plant parents

It’s not just people and pets getting the smart tech treatment – plants (38 per cent) are part of the family too for Gen MZ.

Over a third (38 per cent) use smart technology for watering; room temperature and humidity control (33 per cent); and lighting (29 per cent). With 14% of respondents admitting to using speakers to play music to their plant, with pop and classical popular choices.

Open connected ecosystems like Samsung SmartThings can offer plant parents the ability to bring these functions together – setting up routines that controls the homes temperature, automate lighting schedules, and even cue up music. It’s making plant care simpler, smarter, and more in tune with the needs of every leafy companion.

For Gen MZ, connected living is about practicality – streamlining daily life and making smart homes more responsive to their needs. As this shift accelerates, smart ecosystems are transforming home technology. Devices no longer operate in isolation; instead they work together from smartphones, TVs, refrigerators to vacuums and washing machines. All in all creating a more fluid and efficient experience.

AI For All

Samsung’s AI for All spans a wide range of its AI enabled products, from mobile devices, home appliances and home entertainment systems. By the end of 2024, Samsung expects there will be 200 million Galaxy AI-enabled devices in users’ hands. Samsung understands its AI features need to adapt to how consumers want to live.

Central to this is the expanding SmartThings ecosystem, which connects over 500 million devices[1], offering seamless remote control of all Samsung AI-enabled products, from turning the heating on or off, managing all SmartThings compatible appliances when home or away and navigating Samsung TVs.

Never before has it been so easy for people across the world to use of the power of AI to take control of the world around them. Samsung AI enable products give this power to its users, allowing them to curate their everyday experiences. Whether striving for more sustainable living, expanding creativity or connecting with their loved ones.

However, according to research commissioned by Samsung, only 15% of consumers said they have a full understanding of how AI can be used in their daily lives and yet 66% of us are looking for ways to create more time. This shows a clear opportunity for Samsung AI to give back to people, and why AI is for All.[2]

Rolling out alongside IFA, the latest operating system upgrade, One UI 6.1.1, will expand AI possibilities on the Galaxy S24, Z Fold5 and Flip5[3]. This rollout of One UI 6.1.1 will include brand new apps which bring more opportunity for creativity and connection. Features include Sketch to Image, which allows users to visualise their ideas through image options generated from a simple drawing, and Portrait Studio which propels creativity by helping users create a more personalised avatar to use online.

AI Meets You

Samsung believes that its AI should enhance daily life by allowing users to personalise entertainment experiences. At IFA 2024, Samsung launched the Premiere 7 and 9 Projectors, designed to help users focus on what they care about and who they share it with.

The Premiere 9 and The Premiere 7 projectors, bring advanced laser technology to home entertainment, delivering exceptional 4K resolution and immersive audio on screens up to 130 inches[4]. They include AI-powered technology, including Upscaling, which enhances content to 4K quality, and Vision Booster, which adjusts brightness and contrast for optimal viewing in various lighting conditions. Designed to transform living spaces into premium home cinemas, these projectors offer a superior viewing experience with cutting-edge technology.

Also showcased on stage at IFA were the latest innovations in Samsung TVs. Since 2015, Tizen OS has powered hundreds of millions of smart TVs, leading the evolution of television viewing. 2024 Samsung AI TVs will receive Tizen OS upgrades for seven years considering hardware specification.[5] This ensures that consumers can continue to enjoy the latest innovations and enhanced connectivity across all their Samsung devices.

Samsung’s Neo QLED 8K QN9000D AI screen provides an enhanced viewing experience with built-in NQ 8 AI Gen 3 processor. This processors features 512 neural networks—eight times more than Samsung’s 2024 QN900C and QN800C[6]—and, when combined with the power of AI, deliver a customised, high-quality sound and picture experience. This technology upscales on-screen content up to 8K to deliver Samsung’s sharpest and smoothest picture yet.[7]

The latest developments in The Frame and Art Store were also celebrated at IFA with the announcement of several new partnerships. Along with collaborations with Finnish design house Marimekko and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Samsung introduced an exclusive collection of 12 masterpieces by Belgian surrealist René Magritte. These partnerships enable users to bring extraordinary art into their homes, adding a touch of magic to their everyday surroundings[8].

Samsung is creating simple user experiences through its Bespoke AI appliances, which now offer enhanced Bixby voice control features. These upgraded capabilities[9] mean that Bixby can now understand multiple commands in one sentence, recall previous interactions for personalised responses and provided answers to product related questions. Bixby also opens up greater control and accessibility benefits for users, as it allows people to use the Auto Open Door feature on selected Samsung washing machine and refrigerator models by simply saying “Bixby, open the door.”

Samsung believes that AI is a force for good and one which has a critical role to play in allowing us all to take better care of the planet and each other. Samsung is also continuing its mission to become Net Zero by 2050[10].

On stage at IFA Samsung revealed that the Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo is now rolling out across Australia and Europe. The All-in-One washer and dryer combo is a single space efficient appliance that finishes the wash and dry cycle in one queue. The Bespoke  AI Heat Pump combo which consumes up to 60% less energy with AI Energy Mode during the wash cycle[11]^,[12] and 20% less during the dry cycle when compared to using the same cycle without AI Energy Mode. This impressive performance is achieved through advanced heat pump drying technology, which dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at low temperatures

The SmartThings Ecosystem remains at the core of Samsung’s ability to pioneer energy monitoring and efficiency. Furthermore, with SmartThings Away Mode, users don’t need to worry about forgetting to turn off a SmartThings compatible light or Samsung TV when they go out. Sensors in selected SmartThings compatible appliances sense when there is no-one in the room and then shut down systems to help reduce energy consumption.

Consumers can control and monitor the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI remotely using the SmartThings app[14] on their compatible smartphones. With four different cleaning modes[15] the all-in-one vacuum and mop robot cleaner can be scheduled to clean either a single or multiple rooms. Using the dToF LiDAR senses the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI creates a layout[16] of the home and converts it into a 3D map[17], even including appliances and furniture. As the smart home market continues to grow, users need simple, interoperable, and dependable ways to connect a more significant number of devices. SmartThings Station offers quick setup and compatibility with a range of smart home products including Matter devices, with the simplicity that users expect from Samsung. With SmartThings Station, users can automate different aspects of their home environment, setting routines that add convenience to their day and help to reduce energy waste such as switching off lights and appliances easily.

A Smarter Home, With Minimal Effort

Samsung’s SmartThings Station is easy to set up. When a user powers the device on for the first time, pop-up messages will appear on a user’s Samsung Galaxy smartphone to help guide users through the connection process smoothly[2]. Users may also choose the option to efficiently onboard devices with a simple scan of a QR code[3] with a smartphone camera.

Intuitively Adapts to Users Daily Routines

A smart home hub helps multiple devices, including thermostats, lighting, and power outlets, seamlessly interconnect with other devices connected to the smart home server, so they all work together to create a harmonised environment. SmartThings Station makes it easy to automate pre-set routines created via the SmartThings mobile app, without requiring users to control individual devices manually.

With a press of the Smart Button on the SmartThings Station, users can activate a routine created on their SmartThings app. For example, when it’s time for bed, a quick tap could trigger a routine for sleep – which could turn off the lights, close the blinds and lower the temperature. Or, if a movie night is on the cards, a movie routine could turn on the TV and dim the lights. When leaving home, the SmartThings Station can turn off power outlets and unused appliances to save energy, and activate a security system. Users might also want a gaming routine, which could activate specific TV and lighting settings and turn on ‘Do not Disturb’ mode.

Consumers can trigger up to three different routines just by pressing the Smart Button, with short press, long press, or double press activations. Routines can also be activated via the SmartThings app, whether people are at home or away.

Find and Manage Your Devices around Home More Accurately

SmartThings Station is also integrated with Samsung’s SmartThings Find, a rapidly growing asset tracking service. It helps users to find misplaced devices – double pressing the Smart Button can ring your nearby phone making it easier to find[4].

Serving as an always-at-home device scanner, SmartThings Station helps Samsung Galaxy users to keep track of the locations of their registered devices – from smartphones, tablets, watches, and earbuds to personal belongings such as keys or a wallet that have a Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+[5] device attached. By routinely scanning for devices, SmartThings Station will tell users the location of connected smart devices or tags around the home, and share an alert on the user’s smartphone when a tag or device leaves or returns home[6].

A Fast Charging Pad That Fits Perfectly in a Smart Home

SmartThings Station is also a powerful charging pad supporting up to 15W wireless charging[7]. Fast charging is an ingenious addition to a Smart Home hub because it works so well with the rhythms of life. Users can choose to receive an alert when charging is completed, so they can pick up play where they have left off or switch to charge another device.

Availability

SmartThings Station will launch in the U.S. and Korea. The device will be available in black or white from early February 2023 in the U.S. market. Availability in Australia is yet to be confirmed.

World-Class Object Recognition and AI-Powered Driving

BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ comes with an active stereo-type 3D sensor, which accurately scans a wide area[1] to avoid small, hard-to-detect objects on the floor. Its 3D depth camera – equivalent to 256,000 distance sensors – can precisely detect obstacles as small[2] as 1cm. This innovative object detection helps prevent the unit from getting stuck on small obstacles in its cleaning path.

BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ is also equipped with an Intel AI solution, which powers its Jet AI Object Recognition technology. The smart solution allows the robot to navigate with accuracy by recognising not only the objects on the floor, but also appliances and furniture[3]. The robot’s smart decision-making helps to ensure users can have their unit clean closely around items such as children’s toys while maintaining a safe distance from delicate objects like porcelain vases[4]. It can also classify items such as pet waste, glass cups, and electrical cables as dangerous or likely to cause secondary contamination in order to avoid them.

BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ is even equipped with a LiDAR Sensor that calculates its location precisely to optimise its cleaning path by repeatedly scanning the room[5] to gather distance information. This technology works well in dark areas such as low-lit rooms or below furniture so the unit can cover a larger area.

Powerful Clean From Start to Finish

Users can clean their homes thoroughly with advanced technologies that enable powerful cleaning. Jet Bot AI+’s Digital Inverter Motor maximises the suction power for a deep clean. Furthermore, with its Intelligent Power Control function, the new robot vacuum can even identify the type and amount of dust on the surface to automatically adjust its suction power.

BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a host of hygiene-related functionalities that enable effortless floor cleaning while ensuring that dust is securely trapped and not likely to be released back into the air. Its Advanced 5 Layered Filtration system traps up to 99.99%[6] of micro dust, including 0.5~4.2µm sized particles that can easily escape. All parts and filters are washable to maintain hygiene.

BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ features an Integrated Clean Station which collects dirt and hair in a 2.5L dust bag that only needs to be replaced approximately once in every one to three months[7]. After cleaning, the robot vacuum automatically returns to the Clean Station^TM and empties itself[8] using Air Pulse technology complemented by a multi-layered filtration system that traps 99.999% of fine dust[9], ensuring the dust isn’t released back into the air.

Personalised, Convenient Cleaning for Hassle-Free Usability

Users can control and monitor the BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ remotely using the SmartThings app[10] on their compatible smartphones. The robot vacuum can be scheduled to clean selectively in either a single room or multiple rooms with the ‘Select & Go’ function. The app can also be used to custom-define virtual No-Go Zones to prevent the unit from entering certain areas without the need for physical barriers.

The smart robot also offers Bixby voice recognition capabilities[11], meaning users can use voice commands to schedule cleaning sessions, change modes or even ask for the latest information such as news or weather updates.

Furthermore, with Live Cleaning Report, users can easily track the movement of their BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ on a virtual map of their homes in real time. Users can see where it has cleaned, and even pause it or instruct it to stop cleaning. Once it has completed cleaning, users can check its cleaning history to see which areas have been cleaned, how long it took, and which path it followed.

Moreover, users can monitor their home remotely with the BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+’s Patrol Mode, which uses the unit’s front camera to livestream video images through the SmartThings app. The Patrol Mode allows users to monitor the status of rooms they want to check while away, and even lets them enjoy this feature through scheduling. The smart unit also supports end-to-end encryption, so video clips are secure and can only be viewed by an authorised user.

Intuitive Pet Care for the Modern Pet Parent

Pet owners can take advantage of the BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+’s features to check in and care for their pets while pet owners are out of the house via the SmartThings Pet service. SmartThings Pet Service[12] can stream a live feed from Jet Bot AI+’s front camera and can detect your pet’s movement[13] so users can see that their pets are safe and happy. The BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ can also play music and access other compatible smart devices[14] to keep pets comfortable or entertained. By integrating pet care into its smart home ecosystem, Samsung is reimagining how consumers live and interact with their pet companions.
