Cutting-edge wellness features include BioActive Sensor technology and Advanced Sleep & Continuity SPO2, offering some of Samsung’s most advanced wellness capabilities to date. Insights from the BioActive sensor, which measures Optical Heart Rate and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, can be seen on the app— so users can monitor their heart rate and blood oxygen level[1].

Also, new blood pressure monitoring[2] and electrocardiogram (ECG)[3] features – which, together, are the first in Canada launched on a smartwatch, will be available to help complete an expansive suite of tools for monitoring fitness and overall wellness on the Samsung Health Monitor app^[4] through the Galaxy Watch4 Series.

Blood Pressure Measurement

The Galaxy Watch4 Series measures blood pressure through pulse wave analysis, which is tracked with the Heart Rate Monitoring sensors. Users can simply tap it to measure their blood pressure at their convenience and see results on their Galaxy smartphone Samsung Health Monitor app.

Electrocardiogram Monitoring

The new electrocardiogram feature on the Galaxy Watch4 Series works by analyzing the heart’s electrical activity, classifying it as either a Sinus Rhythm (a normal, regular heartbeat) or AFib (when the heart beats irregularly)[6]. Users who receive an AFib reading are encouraged to consult with their qualified health professional to address any questions or concerns. Being able to monitor heart health on a regular basis allows users to be more informed on their overall health.

Availability

Users must have the Samsung Health Monitor app installed on their Galaxy Watch4 Series device and their Galaxy smartphone[7] to take blood pressure and electrocardiogram measurements. The Samsung Health Monitor app update will be available on the Galaxy Watch4 Series starting April 20, 2022.

Motivation to Move

The latest Body Composition[4] update gives users even more insight into their wellness progress. Now, in addition to setting body composition goals like specific weight, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle targets, users can get tips and reminder notifications within the Samsung Health app for added motivation.

The new interval target feature[5] for runners and cyclists lets users pre-set the duration, distance, and number of sets for their workout. From there, the Galaxy Watch4 Series guides users through a custom intensity training session with a series of high and low intensity workouts, making for an impactful and targeted workout every time.

From warm-up to recovery, the latest Galaxy Watch4 Series update is designed to deliver the best running and recovery experience. Runners can measure their oxygen intake levels (% of VO2 max)[6] in real-time, so they can always control exactly how hard they’re pushing. After the run, Galaxy Watch4 Series helps runners maintain proper hydration by recommending how much to drink based on the amount of sweat loss[7] detected during the workout. It also monitors recovery heart rate[8], with data generated up to two minutes after a cardio-intensive workout.

Work Towards a Better Night’s Sleep

Building on the Galaxy Watch4 Series robust sleep tracking capabilities, the new Sleep Coaching[9] program helps users develop better sleep habits. By tracking sleep patterns over seven days[10] and completing two related sleep surveys, the program assigns one of eight Sleep Symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type. Then, the program will guide users through a four to five week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, sleep-related articles, meditation guidance, and regular reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep quality.

When it comes to waking up refreshed, a peaceful and quiet environment is key to achieving a better rest. Galaxy Watch4 Series recognizes when users fall asleep and automatically turns off Samsung SmartThings enabled lights to help create better sleeping conditions[11].

Greater Selection of Matching Straps and Watch Faces

The new Galaxy Watch4 Series update makes the wearable experience even better, from the inside out. Users can further customize their watch face with additional colours and digital clock fonts that make the watch truly their own. Users can create a more personalized look with new strap colours[12] such as burgundy and cream and the new fabric band.

Committed to Expanding Compatibility within the Android Ecosystem

In 2021, Samsung and Google introduced the co-developed Wear OS Powered by Samsung, bringing smoother connections across Android devices and seamless access to more apps via Google Play[13] including Google Maps, Google Pay, and YouTube Music. Coming soon through an additional update, This means that users can leave their phone behind and still enjoy their favourite artists as they work out on-the-go.

Users can also now install their favourite smartphone apps[15] on their Galaxy Watch4 Series during initial setup with one tap, creating a seamless experience across devices right out of the box.

The update also brings more playful animations to your Steps Challenge watch face to help keep track of how you’re doing and keep you feeling motivated. An animated bear will follow every step of your competition – from stretching before you start a challenge, to cheering you on when you win.

More Convenience with Added Gesture Control

Gesture controls enable you to do more by using simple hand movements. In addition to moving your forearm up and down twice to receive calls and rotating your wrist twice to reject calls or dismiss alarms, the latest Galaxy Watch4 update includes a new hand motion that can act as a helpful shortcut to activate your favourite or most frequently used app or features– without having to lift a finger or press a button.

By doing a simple ‘knock, knock’ motion with your wrist, you can open your list of workouts, turn on a light, or even create a new reminder with ease.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11, Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest innovations – including Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, and Galaxy Watch4 series – setting the new standard for mobile experiences.

In order for users to get to know these groundbreaking products better, Samsung Newsroom spoke with several Samsung executives to learn about innovations of the latest Galaxy devices and the strategy that went into their development. Q: What is the target sales goal for the Galaxy Z series and what steps are you taking to reach it?

A: Many surveys have shown us that the market demand for foldable smartphones is growing, in fact up to 6.5 million units globally in 2021^[1], triple the demand of last year. Samsung is positioned to be the leading and foremost provider, set to drive volume beyond the market demand.

With the new Galaxy Z series, we’re bringing foldable innovations to more consumers by breaking down the barriers of entry with our pricings. I am confident that with our new Galaxy Z series, we can drive record high demand for foldables, inviting even more consumers to enjoy this new way of using their smartphone.

Q: How are you addressing durability concerns with the new Galaxy Z series? Are the new foldables really durable enough for everyday extended use?

Answered by Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the Flagship Product R&D Team, Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Global

A: For the new foldable series, we had a big mission: durability, so that our customers can use the devices with peace of mind for everyday extended use. To do that, we started from scratch in order to make the ‘impossible’, ‘possible’.

Water resistance^[2] and increased durability^[3] are the key features we focused on for our new foldable devices so that users can take their devices with them anywhere with confidence, whether they are breaking a sweat at the gym or relaxing by the pool.

We are able to deliver the world’s first water resistant foldable smartphones by implementing an innovative sealing design that our engineering team has come up with. We’ve also increased the durability of our flexible displays by about 80 percent^[4] compared to the previous Samsung foldables by redesigning the layer structure and using a new protective film.

Furthermore, the outer body of the Galaxy Z series is protected by Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus, our strongest aluminum frame and toughest glass material yet. Thanks to all these innovations, we believe that foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z series are set to become the new standard in mobile devices as the category turns mainstream.

Q: What are you most excited about with Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3?

A: We designed the new Galaxy Z series to address consumers’ needs in every moment – capturing, communicating, sharing and expressing. One of my favorite features is the hands-free selfie with the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. Continuing our collaboration with Google, we made the video call experience even better. Within Google Duo, the camera automatically zooms in and out to fit everyone into the frame. With HD quality, our premium camera system and the devices’ amazing displays, your hands-free video calls are vivid, clear and more enjoyable.

Furthermore, for Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, we have enabled the S Pen experience^[5] with our Wacom partnership, so that users can write down on its large screen for the first time on a Galaxy foldable device. You can even watch content on the top half of your screen and take notes with your S Pen on the bottom half.

Q: Is there enough market demand for foldable devices? What do you think consumers want from the new Galaxy Z series?

A: Samsung pioneered the foldable form factor because we believe in the amazing potential for this technology to, quite literally, open up new experiences. People really appreciate their phones’ unique form factor and the flexibility it provides to multitask, or enjoy their favorite shows, on a large, portable screen.

We have improved our latest Galaxy Z series devices to address the biggest consumer needs and wants. Consumers told us that they were looking for increased durability, new and improved displays, S Pen functionality^[6] and more apps tailored specifically to the foldable experience. With our latest Galaxy Z series devices, we’re delivering all that and more in sleeker devices – at even lower price points.

Q: What improvements did you make to optimize the S Pen experience for the foldable device?

A: Samsung and Wacom have been working closely together for over 10 years on the S Pen, always innovating to deliver unique and differentiated experiences to Galaxy users.

For the foldable device, we have renewed the S Pen technology^[7] to make it more optimized and more special for the new product. Not only does it offer fantastic performance such as less latency and super precision, it also comes with a finely tuned-up pen tip structure to deliver excellent drawing and writing experiences on the foldable screen surface.
