The 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display is about four times larger than the previous version.[4] The model boasts a simple exterior that incorporates the Cover Screen and camera into a single area. The exterior of the smartphone features a simple and soft two-tone look, together with a unique coating that makes the design appear even more sophisticated. The black part is glossy, while the coloured part is matte. When holding the smartphone, the power button can be reached with user’s thumb, making it easy to utilize the Cover Screen and its various features even when the device is folded.

Samsung went to great lengths to refine the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G’s form. The result is a design that not only looks soft but feels soft as well. The front, back and sides have all been meticulously polished. The Hideaway Hinge, which allows users to flatten or fold the smartphone at various angles[5], is even slimmer than the previous version. The Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is designed to protect the hinge against dust and external particles without compromising its beautiful design.

Various colour options and accessories that are suited to users’ unique tastes add to the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G’s external charm. With a total of seven colours[6] – Phantom Black, Green, Lavender, Cream, Pink, White and Gray – users have plenty of options to choose from. [Question 2] How can you customize and use the much larger Cover Screen?

The Cover Screen of the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G has evolved from a means for displaying information like the time and date into a blank slate that can be used to show off a user’s unique style. By accessing the Cover Screen’s Options menu under Settings, users can choose from a variety of clock types, wallpapers and colours. They can also select a photo or GIF from their gallery to make the Cover Screen their own.

The Cover Screen features all-new features to go with its larger size. Without having to unfold the phone to use the Main Screen, users can enjoy various features using the power button, the volume button, or by simply tapping on the screen. One of the most noticeable features allows users to check their notifications. Users can use the Cover Screen to check their messages and app notifications by pressing the power button and swiping to the right. Tap the screen to view up to eight lines of messages and notifications, and tap on ‘Open Application’ at the bottom if you’d like to use the app on the Main Screen right away.

Users can also customize the frequently used widgets that appear on the Cover Screen. Swiping screen to the left allows users to view various types of widgets, including options for music, the weather, their earphones, voice recordings, and more. By setting up the Galaxy Buds2 widget on the Cover Screen, you can easily activate the earbuds’ Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or Ambient Sound modes.[9]

The features of the Cover Screen don’t end there. Swipe down and you’ll see a pop-up window that allows you to toggle between sound modes and adjust the brightness of the Cover Screen. Swipe up to see a list of cards you’ve registered with Samsung Pay. You also have the option to make payments offline right away using the power button’s fingerprint recognition function.[10]

The Quick Shot feature comes in handy when you have no time to unfold the smartphone and open up the camera. Quickly press on the volume button twice to trigger the shutter. You can also adjust the angle using the Cover Screen. Simply show your palm to the camera or press the volume button to take photos.

[Question 3] The foldable advantage: What’s so convenient about folding?

With its built-in hinge, the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G provides a foldable experience that doesn’t come with typical smartphones. Users can use their hands freely when the device is folded, without a stand, so that they can truly enjoy a hands-free experience. The Galaxy Z Flip3’s Flex mode[11], in particular, offers users an even more convenient foldable experience.

Flex mode splits the screen when the phone is folded at certain angles. For example, Flex mode enables users to perform various other tasks while video calling using apps like Google Duo, or when watching clips on YouTube. Even if an application does not support Flex mode, users can manually set it to be used in split screen by going to Settings → Advanced Features → Labs and accessing the Flex Mode Panel.[12]

With the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, you don’t have to worry about your hands shaking when you’re taking a selfie. Simply open the camera and fold the phone to easily take photos and videos. The Auto framing feature, which can be activated with a tap of the button in the bottom-right corner, is particularly handy when taking videos. Auto framing adjusts the format for taking photos and videos automatically according to the location and the number of people or objects in frame. If both the user and the subject of the photo want to view a preview of the video at the same time, all the user needs to do is tap the Dual Preview button at the top right-hand corner of the screen.

[Question 4] What’s multitasking like with the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G?

Say you’re watching a video and you find yourself wanting to look up something from the video and also reply to your friends’ messages. Multitasking support has become a must for smartphones, and this is where the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G’s Multi-Active Window[13] feature truly shines. With the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, users can take part in up to three different activities at the same time using the device’s Drag & Split function. While using an application, simply activate the Edge Panel on the right hand side and drag the two other apps that you need to use. You can adjust the size of the apps’ windows using the divider.

If you have a certain combination of apps that you frequently use, use the App Pair feature to launch them faster. All you need to do is tap the three dots in the middle of the app divider, and then tap the icon on the right. Tapping on the app combinations you’ve saved in the Edge Panel will instantly activate the exact same split screen. If an application does not support multiple windows, you can activate it yourself by going to Settings → Advanced Features → Labs.

The lag that users used to experience when quickly switching between screens has also been reduced. Furthermore, you can enjoy an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz by going to Settings → Display → Motion Smoothness, and selecting the ‘Adaptive’ option. Selecting ‘Standard’ will fix the refresh rate at 60Hz, which can help preserve battery life.

[Question 5] Can you use the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G when you’re out and about, or when caught in unexpected weather?

Durability is a must when it comes to comfortably using smartphones, regardless of location or weather. While the exterior of the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is thinner and lighter than the previous version[14], it is more durable when it comes to external shocks. Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. (Samsung) announced today that eligible TD cards, including TD Access Cards and TD Credit Cards, are now supported by Samsung Pay, the widely accepted mobile payment system that works almost anywhere shoppers can swipe or tap their card.[1] This collaboration with TD significantly expands the availability of Samsung Pay to Canadian cardholders.

The Samsung Pay expansion comes as contactless payments grow in popularity across Canada. To help spur greater adoption of contactless transactions as a fast and safe payment option, card issuers in Canada increased contactless transaction limits from $100 to $250 last year.[2] At the start of 2021, contactless payments accounted for close to 60 per cent of overall transactions across the country.[3]

In addition to payments, users can collect the same rewards and benefits they normally enjoy with Samsung Pay by uploading eligible loyalty cards to the app.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11, Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest innovations – including Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, and Galaxy Watch4 series – setting the new standard for mobile experiences.

In order for users to get to know these groundbreaking products better, Samsung Newsroom spoke with several Samsung executives to learn about innovations of the latest Galaxy devices and the strategy that went into their development. Check out some of the key insights and interview highlights below.

Q: What is the target sales goal for the Galaxy Z series and what steps are you taking to reach it?

A: Many surveys have shown us that the market demand for foldable smartphones is growing, in fact up to 6.5 million units globally in 2021^[1], triple the demand of last year. Samsung is positioned to be the leading and foremost provider, set to drive volume beyond the market demand.

With the new Galaxy Z series, we’re bringing foldable innovations to more consumers by breaking down the barriers of entry with our pricings. I am confident that with our new Galaxy Z series, we can drive record high demand for foldables, inviting even more consumers to enjoy this new way of using their smartphone.

Q: How are you addressing durability concerns with the new Galaxy Z series? Are the new foldables really durable enough for everyday extended use?

Answered by Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the Flagship Product R&D Team, Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Global

A: For the new foldable series, we had a big mission: durability, so that our customers can use the devices with peace of mind for everyday extended use. To do that, we started from scratch in order to make the ‘impossible’, ‘possible’.

Water resistance^[2] and increased durability^[3] are the key features we focused on for our new foldable devices so that users can take their devices with them anywhere with confidence, whether they are breaking a sweat at the gym or relaxing by the pool.

We are able to deliver the world’s first water resistant foldable smartphones by implementing an innovative sealing design that our engineering team has come up with. We’ve also increased the durability of our flexible displays by about 80 percent^[4] compared to the previous Samsung foldables by redesigning the layer structure and using a new protective film.

Furthermore, the outer body of the Galaxy Z series is protected by Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus, our strongest aluminum frame and toughest glass material yet. Thanks to all these innovations, we believe that foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z series are set to become the new standard in mobile devices as the category turns mainstream.

Q: What are you most excited about with Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3?

Answered by Patrick Chomet, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience,  Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Global

A: We designed the new Galaxy Z series to address consumers’ needs in every moment – capturing, communicating, sharing and expressing. One of my favorite features is the hands-free selfie with the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. Continuing our collaboration with Google, we made the video call experience even better. Within Google Duo, the camera automatically zooms in and out to fit everyone into the frame. With HD quality, our premium camera system and the devices’ amazing displays, your hands-free video calls are vivid, clear and more enjoyable.

Furthermore, for Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, we have enabled the S Pen experience^[5] with our Wacom partnership, so that users can write down on its large screen for the first time on a Galaxy foldable device. You can even watch content on the top half of your screen and take notes with your S Pen on the bottom half.

Q: Is there enough market demand for foldable devices? What do you think consumers want from the new Galaxy Z series?

A: Samsung pioneered the foldable form factor because we believe in the amazing potential for this technology to, quite literally, open up new experiences. People really appreciate their phones’ unique form factor and the flexibility it provides to multitask, or enjoy their favorite shows, on a large, portable screen.

We have improved our latest Galaxy Z series devices to address the biggest consumer needs and wants. Consumers told us that they were looking for increased durability, new and improved displays, S Pen functionality^[6] and more apps tailored specifically to the foldable experience. With our latest Galaxy Z series devices, we’re delivering all that and more in sleeker devices – at even lower price points.

Q: What improvements did you make to optimize the S Pen experience for the foldable device?

A: Samsung and Wacom have been working closely together for over 10 years on the S Pen, always innovating to deliver unique and differentiated experiences to Galaxy users.

For the foldable device, we have renewed the S Pen technology^[7] to make it more optimized and more special for the new product. Not only does it offer fantastic performance such as less latency and super precision, it also comes with a finely tuned-up pen tip structure to deliver excellent drawing and writing experiences on the foldable screen surface.

We are so honored to see our technologies continue to be used in Galaxy devices and will keep supporting the expanded Galaxy portfolio with the optional S Pen moving forward.

Q: Why would a user buy a Galaxy Watch4 over other health-specific smartwatches?

A: The Galaxy Watch series has been empowering millions of users to access detailed insights into their overall wellness for years. Now, we have equipped our new Galaxy Watch4 Series with our most advanced sensor technology yet in order to deliver our most comprehensive experience yet.

We reduced the size of the sensors to create a thinner and slimmer design. While smaller sensors typically lessen the accuracy of measurements, we developed an entirely new algorithm to ensure we didn’t make any compromises.

On top of that, we engineered the Samsung BioActive Sensor that enables powerful wellness metrics – such as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Sensor (BIA) – to run on just one chipset. This means that Galaxy Watch4 users can track their heart rate and blood oxygen level^[8] with convenience.

Furthermore, Galaxy Watch4 is the first Galaxy Watch to offer Body Composition analysis^[9], a measurement that instantly provides a complete snapshot of your overall fitness. Together, these features offer users a more holistic and helpful understanding of their overall wellness.

Q: Why did Samsung change the OS for Galaxy Watch, and what does this actually mean for users?

At the same time, we have been working with multiple partners to develop an immense ecosystem of apps that can deliver a richer experience to users. On top of all this, we also boosted Galaxy Watch4’s performance and developed sophisticated sensor technology that fully integrates with industry-leading partner apps.
