Content created in partnership with The Globe and Mail

In today’s technology age, the cab of every truck or delivery van has become a sophisticated mobile office to some extent. This transformation is due in part to rapidly advancing mobile technologies and the development of applications specific to the logistics industry.

Logistics, the movement of goods from manufacturer to warehouse and warehouse to consumer, relies on mobile technology to assist with item tracking, scanning and records management, among other tasks. These activities are critical to the safe and accurate delivery of client goods.

John Corey, president of the Freight Management Association of Canada, says his industry has always required cutting-edge communication and technology to meet its obligations.

“The first telegraph lines were on rail lines and they were used to communicate where trains were,” he says. “Transportation is always pushing communication technology. It makes sense that this sector would embrace mobile technology.”

Today, the freight industry is looking to mobile technology to further streamline its processes. Thanks to the latest mobile computer vision software, barcode scanning is now available in real-time on smartphones and tablets, speeding up the flow of goods and delivery to the consumer.

“You used to require a lot of paperwork to cross the borders — 75 per cent of our exports go to the U.S. — some by train, a lot by truck,” Mr. Corey says. “If you go to the border and you have your paper manifest… it’s extremely time-consuming and the border is already busy enough… If you don’t have it electronically, you get turned away.”

Unloading inefficiency with connected mobile tech

With barcode scanning technology now available on mobile devices, including the Samsung Galaxy rugged lineup, item tracking and data management within the delivery sector has received a huge efficiency boost.

“Logistics workers are no longer required to carry a separate device to scan barcodes, which is a huge bonus for delivery drivers who are constantly on deadlines, moving from location to location,” says Paul Edwards, vice-president and general manager of enterprise mobility at Samsung Canada.

The Samsung Galaxy rugged lineup – which includes the Galaxy XCover Pro, Galaxy Tab Active Pro and Galaxy Tab Active3 – are all equipped with the Knox Capture[1] enterprise-grade barcode scanning app.

“Workers simply press a pre-programmed button on any Galaxy rugged device to activate the scan, and from there, they can scan multiple items at once. The data retrieved can then be used to update the (tracking) application,” he says.

The other benefit of Knox Capture barcode scanning, says Edwards, is that there’s minimal work for the IT teams who need to deploy the solution. “Knox Capture requires zero coding and integration – it’s truly an out of the box solution,” he notes.

Having accessible mobile technology is key in the logistics industry, where there are multiple checkpoints and links in the delivery chain.

“Having an open, instant line of communication helps workers identify and resolve any issues that may delay the process of getting packages from the warehouse to customers’ doors,” Mr. Edwards says.

To that end, the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro smartphone offers a Push-to-Talk, Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie feature so workers can keep in touch more easily during the order fulfilment process.

With a smartphone or tablet in the truck cab, the driver benefits from a mobile office at his or her fingertips, Mr. Corey says.

“Big companies, who have big fleets, are pushing technology in their trucks. Single operators are being forced to catch up because if they can’t compete with that kind of technology, no one will hire them,” Mr. Corey says.

Built to last from door to door

In addition to rich features and innovative functionality, drivers and warehouse workers require their mobile devices to be rugged, says Edwards.

“If you’re going to have a smartphone or tablet in that environment, it has to be well-protected,” Mr. Corey says. “It can’t break the first time you drop it and it has to be sort of immune to vibration.”

There are inevitable bumps and shocks that come from travelling in a delivery truck, so the devices mounted to drivers’ dashboards need to be able to handle those conditions. According to Edwards, it’s why the Samsung Galaxy rugged lineup was built with military-grade durability, to withstand shocks and vibrations, transit drops and extreme temperatures.[2]

Devices must also be able to withstand the dust and dirt typical of warehouse environments.

“Warehouse workers are not going to spend all their time wiping down and keeping the tablet clean,” Mr. Corey adds.

The IP68-rating on the Galaxy Tab Active Pro and Galaxy Tab Active3 with included S Pen stylus mean they are resistant to dust and water[3], adds Mr. Edwards.

“This enables delivery workers to capture signatures digitally from customers after a package is delivered, even in the middle of a rainstorm, or make annotations on an electronic waybill form while working in the warehouse,” he says.

The Samsung lineup of rugged devices also has defence-grade security safeguards in place to ensure restricted access to the devices, which comes in handy when transporting classified cargo.

“Even when the devices are powered off, Samsung Knox helps secure business data stored on the devices against intrusion, malware and other malicious threats,” Mr. Edwards says, noting that an added layer of protection is also available through fingerprint scanners and biometric facial recognition software.

“This helps to help further restrict access to only those individuals who have been cleared to handle the device,” he says.

Rugged smartphones and tablets are an important lifeline for delivery drivers and warehouse workers who rely on them to communicate with colleagues and supply consumers with real-time delivery updates.

The devices, and the applications on them, are what make it possible for consumers to receive the updates they now expect, and for the order fulfillment process to run as smoothly as possible.

Content created in partnership with The Globe and Mail

Over the last 18 months, the pandemic lockdowns have forced retailers to rethink how and where they sell products, whether that’s in-store, curbside pick-up, or direct to a customer’s front door. One of the lasting impacts of the pandemic is the range of options customers have come to know and expect when purchasing goods and services.

The accompanying rise in e-commerce and digital payments has produced a major shift in retail operations, says Paul Edwards, vice-president and general manager of enterprise mobility for Samsung Canada. According to Edwards, technology has played a key role in helping retailers meet customers’ post-pandemic preferences and has helped them handle the digital payments boon.

“Mobile technology has helped streamline backroom inventory and supply management services as well as front-of-store operations,” Mr. Edwards says. “Retail clerks and warehouse workers are relying on smartphones and tablets to keep up with their inventory obligations and to connect with customers more easily,” Mr. Edwards says.

For instance, built-in mobile scanning technology is now indispensable for warehouse workers who pick, pack and ready products for shipment, while many retail clerks are equipped with smartphones and tablets to help them track down items, process sales and respond to customer questions from anywhere on the sales floor or curbside.

More consumers today are also empowered with the latest technologies to search, scan and purchase themselves the products they need and want, right from their smartphones.

“Customer service expectations have increased because of mobile technology at both retail clerks’ and customers’ disposal,” Mr. Edwards says.

Mobile connectivity is critical for companies

More than three-quarters of Canadian retailers say mobile connectivity through devices like smartphones and tablets play an important role in their business success, according to a recent Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) survey.

“Small businesses know that there’s opportunity in leveraging technology, especially in improving their customer experience and in reaching new customers and growing their market,” says Mandy D’Autremont, the CFIB’s senior director of member experience and strategy.

The CFIB survey also says 85 per cent of retailers need mobile data outside their stores.

“It’s important to meet your customers when and where they want to be connected,” Ms. D’Autremont says. “Mobile devices are critical to retailers because they enable the store clerk to be wherever their work is, whether that’s in the storage room managing inventory or helping to make sales with customers one-on-one.”

Technology to withstand retail demands

With e-commerce on the rise, retailers need technology solutions to help them fulfill a growing number of orders and keep track of inventory. While many retail tasks can be automated, moving products will always require people, says Mr. Edwards of Samsung.

It means warehouse workers increasingly need rugged mobile devices that that can help them access the required applications without worrying about their device being damaged in the process. They also need mobile devices that consolidate multiple solutions, including applications to digitize their workflows and special features like built-in scanning to minimize the number of devices they have to carry.

The Samsung Galaxy rugged lineup, which consists of the Galaxy XCover Pro smartphone and Galaxy Tab Active Pro and Galaxy Tab Active3 tablets, come with Knox Capture enterprise-grade barcode scanning technology.[1] With the touch of a programmable button, retail workers have a multi-purpose scanning solution at their fingertips to help them complete fulfillment requests efficiently, with a process as intuitive as snapping a photo.

Mr. Edwards adds that the Knox Capture platform is ideal for companies because it’s easy for IT teams to configure, deploy and manage remotely.

Galaxy rugged devices also include enhanced touch sensitivity features that allow warehouse workers to successfully navigate the device’s interface while wearing gloves.[2] This is especially helpful for those working in storage spaces and warehouses where dust and dirt quickly accumulate.

What’s more, the Galaxy rugged line is IP68-rated, meaning the devices are resistant to dust and water.[3]

Customer-facing retail locations also need rugged mobile devices that support customer service and sales tasks. With some clerks on the floor for lengthy shifts, these devices need to come with long-lasting batteries and shock resistance for inevitable bumps and drops, says Mr. Edwards.[4]

Fortunately, all Galaxy rugged devices come with long-lasting batteries to help power through long shifts, whether retail works are moving product in the storage room or out on the floor tending to customers.[5] They also have replaceable batteries so workers can quickly remove and swap out their battery if the need arises.[6]

Additionally, the Galaxy Tab Active3 can withstand anti-shock drop resistance up to 1.2m device only and up to 1.5m with in-box cover, ideal for workers picking and packing product, or moving around the showroom floor, where the likelihood for drops increases.[7]

“They are well-suited for tough environments,” Edwards says.

With the retail sector continuing to evolve, technology will remain key to helping retailers stay relevant while delivering on shoppers’ expectations.

Samsung Electronics Canada announced today that Samsung Knox Capture, a data capture solution that unlocks enterprise-grade barcode scanning capabilities, is available across the entire lineup of Galaxy rugged devices, including the Galaxy Tab Active3, Galaxy Tab Active Pro and Galaxy XCover Pro. Knox Capture delivers fast, accurate scanning for frontline workers across a variety of industries including manufacturing, transportation and logistics, retail and healthcare.

“Today’s frontline workers require multiple devices to complete their daily jobs. As a result, IT leaders are looking to consolidate and find innovative solutions that meet workforce needs. Knox Capture was developed to deliver a more seamless, cost-effective, multi-purpose option,” said Paul Edwards, VP of Enterprise Mobility, Samsung Electronics Canada. “Building on Samsung Knox platform capabilities, we’re committed to delivering high-performing and flexible solutions, empowering businesses with technology to solve their most complex mobility requirements.”

Knox Capture transforms Samsung rugged mobile device cameras into powerful scanners by leveraging Scandit’s mobile computer vision software, providing the performance and flexibility customers need for digitized business workflows. Coupled with the leading productivity features of the Galaxy rugged lineupand Samsung Knox Suite’s tools for security, deployment and management, the solution enables businesses and frontline workers to do more than ever on a single device, securely.

Crafted for Frontline Workers

Today’s frontline workers require intelligent tools that help them work more efficiently, while keeping safe. The Galaxy rugged portfolio was designed with these workers in mind, and Knox Capture adds further value by consolidating the number of devices needed and simplifying yet another task that they may encounter. Whether it’s a warehouse associate scanning multiple packages for delivery, or a nurse scanning wristbands in a hospital setting, Knox Capture is fast and easy to use. Simply press a pre-programmed button on any Galaxy rugged device to activate the scan – it’s as easy as taking a picture.

While the solution has single-scanning options, it can also simultaneously scan multiple barcodes and supports a wide range of commonly used industry 1D and 2D barcodes, including EAN, UPC, GS1 DataBar, ITF, and Codabar. By scanning multiple barcodes simultaneously with a single click, workers can reduce the amount of time spent on stock taking, allowing them to focus on other priorities and increasing efficiency across supply chains and operations.

Cost Effective Deployment and Effortless Configuration

Ready on day one as a part of the Samsung Knox Portfolio, Knox Capture seamlessly transforms ruggedized devices into industrial tools with advanced, customizable scanning controls that businesses can tailor to their individual needs. Most enterprises have to build or adapt their apps to leverage scanning solutions through complex and time-consuming development efforts. However, Knox Capture isn’t just a software scanner; it’s also a data wedge that requires no integration or development prior to use. This eliminates scanning related development and maintenance costs, getting businesses up and running faster with an off-the-shelf solution that can immediately scan barcode data into homegrown, third party apps and web apps.

As businesses look to begin their digital transformation journey, expand existing homegrown or third-party software scanning solutions, or replace legacy dedicated scanners, Knox Capture features the capabilities enterprises need for a wide range of digitized business workflows.

“We’re extremely pleased with our latest collaboration with Samsung. It has brought to market an easy-to-deploy integrated solution for businesses looking to put scanning tools instantly in the pockets of frontline workers,” said Samuel Mueller, CEO of Scandit. “For off-the-shelf scanning needs, it is a sure-fire way to boost employee performance and productivity. For enterprises, it is also a foundation for more advanced computer vision capabilities that Scandit delivers by working directly with customers alongside Samsung to support their digital transformation journey.”

Content created in partnership with Canadian Business

The pace of digital transformation for businesses around the world was already moving at breakneck speeds, with companies mapping out their digital strategies several years into the future. But like many things, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed all that, forcing entire industries to massively accelerate that adoption and look for innovative technology solutions to adapt to the new world.

Industries operating on the frontlines, such as oil and gas, construction and engineering, manufacturing and logistics, have had to increasingly pivot to technologies that meet their workforces’ needs for both mobility and productivity. Powerful and portable, rugged mobile devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active3, Galaxy Tab Active Pro and Galaxy XCover Pro, are rich in productivity features while being able to withstand all the bumps and bruises that life in the field can throw at them.

Built for anything

Whether you’re a construction worker on the job site, a delivery driver on the road or a nurse in the ICU, chances are your tablet or smartphone is by your side at all times—and that means they’re likely going to take some hits. The Samsung Galaxy rugged devices were built with this kind of treatment in mind. Not only are they IP68 rated[1], meaning they are resistant to dust, water and submersion up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, they also meet the military’s stringent standards[2]: tested for drops, temperature, low pressure, high-altitude and shock.

With each device, Samsung has zeroed in on specific business needs. For outdoor industries such as construction and agriculture, where single-handed use and portability is paramount, the Galaxy XCover Pro is a 6.3-inch smartphone that offers just the right amount of screen real estate. On the tablet side of things, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro offers a large, full HD 10.1-inch display, ideal for multitasking and viewing detailed images like blueprints and patient files, while the more compact Galaxy Tab Active3 8-inch screen offers ample workspace and mobility when you‘re moving between work sites. Both the Galaxy Tab Active3 and Galaxy Tab Active Pro also come complete with the S Pen, a digital stylus that enables workers to get the signatures they need for shipping manifests or quickly make notes on building plans while on site.

It may sound like a no-brainer, but for many workers, wearing gloves is mandatory for health and safety and regulatory reasons and quality control. Samsung designed its rugged Galaxy line-up with enhanced sensitivity that allows for interaction even with gloves on[3] so workers can stay focused on the task in progress without removing important equipment.

Adaptable and versatile solutions

Many industries have had to adapt to working wherever and whenever the job takes them, often shifting from the job site to the road to the home. The rugged Galaxy devices are not just tough, they also offer several innovative productivity features to help achieve this versatility.

Samsung DeX[4]—which allows users to dock a Samsung tablet or smartphone and use it as a PC—has become a valuable tool for industries such as law enforcement whose officers are mostly mobile during the day but can also benefit from a desktop-like experience when they’re in the field. While in the patrol car, a device like the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active3 or Galaxy Tab Active Pro can be connected to the in-car monitor for viewing full-sized images and video, transferring files, completing reports and more. Frontline industries in Canada and around the world, from police services and first responders to public utility and delivery fleets, currently use the DeX system in their vehicles to keep them connected and productive on the go.

One of the benefits of DeX functionality is that it streamlines the hardware required to get the job done – and less time spent changing from device to device means improved efficiency on the job. To achieve that objective, the Galaxy Tab Active3 and Galaxy XCover Pro also feature Knox Capture, an enterprise-grade scanning app that enables employees to easily capture all major barcode types with an experience that is as intuitive as snapping a photo. For warehouse associates scanning packages for delivery, or nurses scanning wristbands in a hospital, this means that functions that would typically require specialized scanning hardware can all be done on their smartphone, streamlining the experience for both employees and their IT teams.

Collaboration and Connection

From construction to field work, and across multiple job sites and offices, teams need tech that lets them collaborate and stay connected with each other. The Galaxy XCover Pro puts instant communication right at workers’ fingertips thanks to easily programmable keys for a Push-to-Talk feature that can launch Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie at the touch of a button. For teams deployed across several sites where distance would be a factor with traditional communications gear, Push-to-Talk on the Galaxy XCover Pro lets teams actively collaborate without worrying about radio signals or frequencies.

Constant communication and active collaboration can also be a drain on your battery, especially during those long days in-field, which is why the entire Galaxy rugged line-up comes equipped with a long battery life. When running low on juice, workers on the go can easily swap in a convenient replacement battery so that their Galaxy devices last until long after the job is done – especially key for workers in remote areas where charging on the job isn’t an option.

Spurred by these extraordinary times, the adoption of new technology and digital tools such as portable, rugged devices is happening at an accelerated pace, allowing industries to not only stay alive but thrive.
