Who better to test out the Galaxy Rugged equipment than De Mello Coffee Roasters, an award-winning specialty coffee roastery based out of Toronto. Founded in 2013, De Mello Coffee supplies high-quality coffee and baked goods to numerous cafes in Toronto and operates four cafes of their own around the Greater Toronto Area.

After a trial period of using the devices in their roastery, warehouse and kitchen, the De Mello Coffee team members Head Roaster, Jaimee and Warehouse Manager, Neo shared their feedback on how the Galaxy XCover6 Pro and Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro performed in a hospitality setting.

Tell us about the work environment where you used the Galaxy Rugged devices.

“Our work environment exposes our devices to factors such as excessive heat, coffee grinds and flour in the kitchen, cold temperatures, and staff who is often on their feet and on the go. Durability plays a fairly important part for us and the Rugged devices held up exceptionally well, specifically in the following scenarios:

• Roastery: In the process of daily coffee roasting, the roasting machine reaches temperatures up to 240 degrees Celsius, while the afterburner has the capacity to reach temperatures as high as 999 degrees Celsius. Despite the proximity to intense heat, the devices performed flawlessly. Additionally, the machines used for sealing coffee bags generate a considerable amount of heat, but placing the devices on top of them posed no problems.
• Warehouse: In the warehouse, where green coffee beans are stored in burlap sacks, the environment is quite dusty due to coffee and flour particles. Workers often need to climb ladders to access items stored on high shelves. Despite the potential for accidental drops and dust accumulation, the devices were unaffected.
• Kitchen: In the kitchen, there’s not only heat but also a need to refrigerate dough and ingredients. The devices demonstrated resilience to the cold as well. On one occasion, an employee mistakenly left their device in the refrigerator overnight. Surprisingly, the battery, screen, and overall durability remained unaffected.”

How did the devices support your day-to-day operations?

“Within the roastery, we used both the Galaxy XCover6 Pro and the Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro extensively for tasks such as recording coffee profiles, archiving data, and note-taking during meetings. We also used the Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro for inventory checks, creating Word documents, and all communication needs within the warehouse. While in the kitchen, the devices lent themselves for checking order sheets, placing and receiving orders, and communicating with customers and wholesale partners.”

What features of the Galaxy rugged lineup stood out to you the most?

“Durability was the most outstanding feature for us. Additionally, the touchscreen was very convenient, even when wearing Nitrile gloves, which we wear regularly.[3] The device’s pen performance was exceptional, making it feel like writing on paper. Moreover, the extended battery life was a significant advantage. Despite working eight-hour shifts, the devices easily lasted for two days.”

How did the Galaxy Rugged devices perform in terms of productivity?

“The devices facilitated smooth communication in various work environments and proved invaluable for tasks like notetaking and bookkeeping. They greatly enhanced our ability to access necessary information and maintain productivity, irrespective of the setting.”

Samsung Canada has launched Samsung News, a new way for Canadians to experience everyday news in one convenient place on their Samsung Galaxy device. With morning and evening briefings, custom feeds, and more, the innovative features of Samsung News’s allows users to experience their news in a seamless format that works best for them.

Launching in beta, Samsung News is an update to Samsung Free. Users who already have Samsung Free on their device will notice the icon change to Samsung News when their apps are updated. All other users will be able to access the app by downloading it directly from the Samsung Galaxy Store. At first, Samsung News will be available on select smartphones, with the full roll out to all addressable devices coming shortly.

 Samsung Electronics Canada, in collaboration with Code Ninjas, today launched ‘Galaxy Builders’, an interactive learning experience to encourage coding amongst young Canadians. Starting June 10, youth between the ages of 5 – 14 are invited to attend free coding workshops where they can learn how to code and create an interstellar digital Galaxy and test their innovations using Samsung Galaxy devices at select Samsung Experience Stores and Code Ninja locations across the Greater Toronto Area. Leveraging Code Ninja’s engaging game-based curriculum, Samsung Canada aims to encourage the development of coding skills, along with boosting self-confidence amongst youth via teamwork, logic, and problem-solving skills.

“As the digital landscape continues to evolve, computer coding skills are more important than ever and we’re proud to work with Code Ninjas to empower Gen Alpha coders to unlock their potential to learn with Samsung Galaxy technology,” said Raj Doshi, Head of Mobile Business at Samsung Electronics Canada. “Equipped with our Galaxy mobile devices, these digital experiences not only give youth the opportunity to learn a key digital skillset, but also provide them with a space to unleash their imagination and bring their worlds to life.”

With Code Ninjas instructors on hand providing step-by-step lessons, participants will build their own personalized constellation using code on an easy-to-use software app that allows them to adjust parameters such as number of stars, colours, planets, and rate of pulsation.

One of these new connectivity features is Recent Websites[2] – an update for the Microsoft Phone Link[3] App now available across the Galaxy Book series – which allows users to continue browsing sessions on their PCs effortlessly. A great way to hit the ground running when moving from a phone to a Galaxy Book, this feature makes browsing experiences smoother and more mobile, ensuring users never miss a beat in their productivity.

Galaxy Book users can now call up recent sessions from their smartphone with a single click, taking the fuss out of multi-device browsing for responsive, convenient navigation. For instance, let’s say a user wants to research something on their phone and opens multiple tabs. At some point, it might be more efficient to open these same tabs on a bigger screen and start working with PC applications. With Recent Websites, this task is now made easy, allowing users to open new tabs without needing to go back to check search terms or browsing histories.

To use Recent Websites, make sure to link your Galaxy smartphone to Galaxy Book through Link to Windows’ on your phone and the Microsoft Phone Link App on your PC. Then simply open the Microsoft Phone Link App or flyout on your PC, which will display a list of websites you recently opened on your smartphone. Clicking on one of these websites will launch them straight away on your Galaxy Book.

Recent Websites is one of a variety of new and upcoming connectivity features that make the connected experience between Galaxy smartphones and the Galaxy Book series richer and more adaptable. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced an expanded partnership with Google to take smart home interoperability to the next level. In the coming months, Samsung Galaxy phone and tablet users will be able to easily onboard Matter-compatible devices to both the SmartThings and Google Home ecosystems.

Until now, smart homeowners have experienced challenges using their devices across multiple ecosystems. Connecting devices between ecosystems often involved many steps across multiple apps to link accounts, which did not always work in both directions. This meant users had to remember which apps and interfaces they could control or automate a particular device. The Matter standard’s multi-admin capabilities provide the foundation for connecting devices directly to multiple apps and ecosystems, giving consumers more flexibility and choice.  Samsung and Google are building on multi-admin, allowing users to seamlessly find, choose to connect and control Matter-enabled devices through SmartThings or Google Home apps on Android.

When users go into the SmartThings app, they will be made aware of Matter devices that have been set up with Google Home and will be given a choice to easily onboard those devices to SmartThings, and vice-versa. Now, whether users want to control their smart home on their SmartThings app or a Google Nest Hub, the devices will always be there. Users won’t have to manually add each of their devices one at a time or worry about which ecosystem their device has been set up on first.
