It started with a simple question: What if you could measure your nutrition in real-time, right from your wrist?

Samsung’s Antioxidant Index on Galaxy Watch8 transforms what once seemed like science fiction into everyday technology. In five seconds, a thumb scan returns carotenoid levels – the industry’s first measurable nutrition index[1].

By miniaturizing lab-grade sensor technology, it turns your diet into an actionable metric for healthier aging. Establishing this new benchmark in wearable health tracking required years of intensive R&D, countless prototypes, and unwavering grit.

Breaking New Ground in Nutrition Tracking

Back in 2018, Samsung saw a critical gap in wearables: we could count every step and calorie, yet there was no simple way to measure how our diet impacted our health. Deeper nutritional insights were locked behind expensive and time-consuming lab tests, out of reach for many people.

As people live longer, the focus is shifting from simply increasing lifespan to improving the quality of those additional years.

“In this context, antioxidation naturally gains attention as a method to slow down aging,” explains Dr. Hyojee Joung, a Seoul National University public health nutrition expert who guided parts of the tech’s development. “If antioxidant management is neglected, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) accumulate in the body, increasing the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.”

This realization made antioxidants the cornerstone of Samsung’s mission. Engineers and scientists focused on carotenoids – key antioxidants and indicators of fruit and vegetable intake – to create a device small enough to sit on your wrist, yet powerful enough to turn complex antioxidant data into simple, actionable insights for everyone.

Challenge #1: How to Shrink the Lab-Grade Sensor Technology

From day one, the dream of a nutrition-tracking wearable hit an immediate snag: traditional methods for measuring carotenoid levels like Raman spectroscopy are laser-based, non-invasive and precise, but rely on bulky machines that are far from wearable. So the team’s first mission was to shrink the lab-grade tech into a coin-sized sensor.

The first prototype of the spectroscopy-based antioxidant sensor

A clinical-ready version of the sensor

A prototype designed for use in skincare products

After seven years of rigorous testing and optimizing since the first prototype, the team developed the BioActive sensor, a groundbreaking tech that combines multi-wavelength LEDs with a custom photodetector array to provide – carotenoid readings in a compact design.

“Our breakthrough was integrating reflectance spectroscopy with LEDs, which allowed us to miniaturize the technology while maintaining a high level of accuracy,” explains Jinyoung Park, a developer from Digital Health team at Samsung Electronics.

Antioxidant sensor LED-PD sensor modules

Unlike lasers, which emit a sharp, narrow wavelength, LEDs emit a broader wavelength range. By analyzing how much light is absorbed by the skin at multiple wavelengths through photodiodes, the watch estimates carotenoid levels. The advanced algorithms that continuously calibrate in real-time also support precision while delivering personalized insights to each user.[2]

The LED-PD Watch prototype testbed

Challenge #2: How to Ensure the Tech Reaches Everyone

Creating a coin-sized carotenoid sensor was a major milestone, but the next challenge was ensuring it could work accurately and reliably across diverse skin types, making it truly accessible to everyone.

To overcome challenges like melanin interference in darker skin tones, Samsung’s engineers opted to use the fingertip for measurements since it has the least melanin across all ethnic groups. They also added simple tweaks, like light fingertip pressure during scans, which helps temporarily reduce blood flow and hemoglobin interference.

Extensive trials conducted at Samsung Medical Center, included hundreds of participants, validating the sensor’s performance. This paved the way for a feature that seamlessly transitioned from the lab to users worldwide, offering an inclusive solution designed for everyday life.

How it Works:

Carotenoids are the natural red, yellow, and green pigments found in fruits and vegetables. Since our bodies can’t produce carotenoids on their own, the levels stored in the body offer a snapshot of how much fruit and vegetables someone has been eating.

This is where your Antioxidant Index score comes in, reflecting your carotenoid levels based on these categories:

Very low: Less than 50% of the daily WHO recommendation of 400g per day.

Low: Between 50%–100%.

Optimal: 100% or more.

“Skin carotenoids metabolize and accumulate in tissues gradually, so short-term changes in fruit and vegetable intake won’t immediately appear in the score,” explains Dr. Hyojee Joung. “Our research shows that increased carotenoid intake leads to a meaningful rise in skin carotenoid levels after about one to two weeks, making the Index a valuable tool for tracking consistent, long-term dietary habits.”

Lifestyle factors like sleep quality, stress levels, and physical activity also influence the Index, making it a well-rounded indicator of overall wellness. Paired with other Galaxy Watch8 features like sleep coaching[3], activity tracking and Vascular Load monitoring[4], the Antioxidant Index offers a holistic view of your wellness, empowering smarter decisions.

The Antioxidant index feature measures carotenoid levels in seconds with the sensor on the back of the Galaxy Watch8 and provides additional nutritional insights on paired Galaxy smartphones.

Your Wellness, Reimagined

“New wearable sensors can play a role in helping people build healthy eating habits by tracking and encouraging sufficient daily intake of fruits and vegetables,” says Professor Yoonho Choi from Samsung Medical Center.

Antioxidants are an emerging area of focus, and research has been limited due to the challenges of accurate measurement. But Galaxy Watch8’s Antioxidant Index goes beyond current industry developments and delivers meaningful innovation.

Samsung’s ability to measure antioxidant levels is a game-changer in health monitoring. By helping users identify risks early and take proactive steps towards improving their wellness, Samsung is paving the way for a smarter, more proactive approach and reimagining what role wearables can play.

Some people train for marathons. Others just want to feel less stiff after sitting all day. So how do you reach your goals while staying motivated and avoiding injury? The Galaxy Watch8 series gives you all the answers, all while sitting snugly on your wrist thanks to its sleek design and dynamic lug system.

How do I set the ideal fitness goal for me?

Galaxy Watch8’s built-in Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) sensor6 measures your body fat percentage, body-water content and skeletal muscle mass, so you get a comprehensive snapshot of your body. These insights help you create a personalized training plan and track every step of your progress.

How can I start running more consistently?

Start with Running Coach7 which analyzes your pace and fitness level after just a 12-minute run to build a custom routine. It also keeps you motivated during your runs with real-time feedback, helping you to reach your goals. Worried about potential injury? Running Coach provides tailored training programs at the ideal intensity, helping you gain speed safely.

How can I maximize recovery after training?

Samsung Health gives you the tools for optimal post-workout recovery. Check your heart rate after an intense workout and get recommendations on water intake based on sweat loss, so you can get the rest you need to come back stronger.

[Bonus Tip] Try Zone 28 interval training, known to help improve endurance and boost fat burning potential. Galaxy Watch8 sets personalized Heart Rate Zones based on your fitness level to help you stay within your personal HR Zone 2 for peak results.

Optimize Your Nutrition with Biohacking

Now that sleep and activity are under control, turn to the everyday habits that drive healthy aging. The Galaxy Watch8 series tracks antioxidant levels, giving you a real-time view of your cellular health and how each lifestyle choice shapes it. Just put your thumb on the back sensor to get Instant Nutritional Feedback that used to require lab tests.

How do I know if I’m eating enough fruits and vegetables?

Use the Antioxidant Index9 to see how your diet and lifestyle habits can impact you. Within just five seconds, it measures the carotenoids — natural antioxidants from fruits and veggies — stored in your skin and provides a score out of 100. It also offers tips to boost your score, like adding more colourful produce such as carrots, broccoli and oranges to your meals.

How can I cut down on unhealthy habits?

First, we must learn more about how our bodies are affected by these unhealthy habits. Your Energy Score10 provides insights on how factors such as alcohol intake and late-night snacking affect your health, while Antioxidant Index directly shows the impact of these habits — motivating you to change your ways and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

How can I easily track my water intake?

Proper hydration is essential for performing at your best, but it is often difficult to track. With Samsung Health, you can track your water intake with just a tap and set a daily hydration goal. Galaxy Watch8 will handle the rest by sending personalized reminders and monitoring trends, making it effortless to stay on top of your game.

The Galaxy Watch8 series turns biohacking from buzzword to habit — personal, actionable and effortless. Wear it, watch the insights roll in, and let better health become second nature.

Samsung reveals new research demonstrating consumers’ latest desires for technology in the home

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. showcased its latest innovations for the connected home. During its IFA 2023 press conference, the company highlighted its vision for SmartThings is to enable consumers across Europe to prioritise the topics they care about – from saving energy, increasing security and access to great entertainment to making their everyday lives more efficient. The ever-growing SmartThings ecosystem allows its 285 million users to adapt and personalise their homes to suit their needs, seamlessly connecting and controlling multiple appliances and devices via one app.

Samsung’s presence at IFA 2023 comes as the company shares new consumer research, conducted across Europe to understand evolving needs for technology in the home[1].

“Samsung is passionate about connecting our users to the people, places and pastimes that matter most to them,” said Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Europe. “We will continue to take advantage of the possibilities offered by the latest innovations in technology to make sure the SmartThings ecosystem grows and develops in a way that allows people to make even more of the connections that matter.”

Enhancing the at-home experience

The SmartThings app allows users to control their homes from anywhere, helping them to enjoy seamless entertainment as well as keeping them safe. Across Europe, our homes continue to be more important than ever as they play multiple roles each day – from offices to places for relaxation and entertainment. Seven in ten consumers (71%) agree that technology has a positive impact on their everyday living, including how they interact with their friends and family, how they conduct their chores and how they enjoy their hobbies¹.

Now, those with a passion for food can fully connect themselves to the joy of cooking and eating with Samsung Food, the new all-in-one app for recipe searching, saving and sharing, meal planning, cooking and grocery shopping. Announced at the press conference, Samsung Food is available in 104 countries and eight languages, and puts the world’s food knowledge at users’ fingertips, empowering them to make the food, health and cooking decisions that are right for them. It also connects to users’ kitchens, instantly sending the right time and temperature to their compatible Samsung oven. With more than 160,000 recipes, there will always be something new to cook.

By the end of the year, using Food AI, Samsung Food will provide personalised recipes reflecting users’ dietary requirements, such as converting recipes into a vegan version in just a few taps. In a further enhancement due later this year, it will link with Samsung Health so tailored meal plans can be adapted to suit preferences and dietary requirements, as well as support users in reaching their health goals. In 2024, using Vision AI technology, Samsung Food will use photos taken of meals to check nutritional information, recognise ingredients and recommend the best recipes to use them in.

As the number one TV brand for 17 years in a row[2], Samsung has an unrivalled commitment to entertainment. It has completed its super screen line up with the launch of the 98” Neo QLED 8K and 4K Q80C and plans to bring its full range of Micro LED screens to Europe by the end of the year, offering incredible contrast and jaw-dropping detail that places viewers in the middle of the action whether gaming or watching films.

To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary, Samsung has announced the launch of The Frame – Disney100 Edition. Featuring an exclusive bezel in the Disney 100 signature platinum silver metal and a unique Mickey Mouse inspired Disney remote. It also comes with 100 pieces of iconic art from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel, Lucasfilm and National Geographic, as well as classic images of Mickey, Minnie, Woody, Cinderella and many others. Users can also display their family photos for a magical home environment.

Also announced at the press conference was the global launch of The Freestyle 2nd Gen. This versatile, portable projector delivers a big screen experience wherever the user chooses – even on the ceiling. The Smart Edge Blending feature offers landscape and portrait screen experiences, meaning two Freestyle 2nd Gen projectors can be paired to give a 160” panoramic and 120” vertical viewing experience. What is more, with complete access to the Samsung Gaming Hub, users of the Freestyle 2nd Gen can enjoy the biggest games from Samsung’s streaming partners.

In partnership with Xbox and Bethesda Softworks, this now includes Starfield, the stunning, next-generation role-playing game set amongst the stars. Playable through the Samsung Gaming Hub with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership, without the need for a console.

Taking small steps for our planet

Samsung is committed to developing products and services that help people save money and take steps towards a better planet. These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy – not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too4. Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption4.

With energy prices increasing across Europe[3], 72% of those asked are concerned about the cost of running appliances in their home[4]. To help combat this, SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70%[5] by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm.

Samsung has also partnered with global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise and apparel maker Patagonia to find solutions to the issue of microfiber shedding. The Less Microfiber Filter is an external washing machine filter that cuts up to 98% of microplastic emissions from laundry cycles[6]. Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said: “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.”

Heating technologies like heat pumps represent a rapidly growing market, and Samsung is at the forefront of this growth. Its innovative smart air source heat pumps have seen an unprecedented 97% growth in sales since 2022[7]. These work with domestic hot water tanks or with Samsung’s ClimateHub, to make your home comfortable all year round, whatever the weather. They can also connect to the SmartThings ecosystem, so their energy use can be monitored and tailored to the user’s preferred environment[8]. The latest addition to its range of high temperature monobloc heat pump solutions, the EHS Mono R290, launches in September.

Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip5[9] and Fold5[10] and the Galaxy Tab S9 series[11] feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the Galaxy Watch6 series incorporate post-consumer recycled plastics. All of these Galaxy innovations come in packaging boxes made using recycled paper material[12].

Keeping your home secure

Samsung understands the reassurance that smart technology can provide across the generations. Security was an emerging theme from the research conducted. Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology[13].

The SmartThings ecosystem includes a range of partners who are committed to helping people keep their homes and loved ones safe. This now includes Yale, a leading brand in home security. The Yale Linus® Smart Lock and the new Smart Opener for Gate & Garage enable doors and gates to be locked remotely via the app to ensure peace of mind for all family members.

Unlocking the future through smart technology

Samsung is invested in a future built around the possibilities that technology can unlock. One area it aims to make a difference is in making the technology for smart homes more easily available. The research shows a quarter of Europeans consider the inclusion of smart technology to be a key factor in the desirability of their next home and over three quarters of respondents said fully functional smart homes are appealing (77%)12.

Understanding this, Samsung is working to make these possibilities a reality and it believes in the power of collaboration when it comes to driving this vision forward. By partnering with ABB Smart Buildings and SMA, one of the world’s leading providers of photovoltaic and storage system technology, it hopes to connect people more closely to their homes by embedding the possibilities of smart technology into houses before they are bought. By integrating ABB and SMA products into SmartThings Energy, homes can become even safer, smarter and more sustainable. For example, the ability to run appliances at the optimum time, tracking energy use to adjust consumption based on energy prices and usage patterns, and optimising energy use based on solar production.

Written by Renee Tse, Toronto writer and digital content creator

My name is Renée and I recently had the opportunity to put my Samsung Galaxy Watch5 and the Samsung Health app to the ultimate test at a pop-up Zumba class at Goodlife Fitness.

I’ve been using my Galaxy Watch Active2 for a few years now and although it’s been a very handy accessory for my day-to-day life (i.e., tracking my heart rate[1], reminding me to stand up, seamlessly sending through my phone notifications, etc.), I was impressed with all the new features on the latest Samsung Galaxy Watch5.

Apart from keeping me on track with my everyday needs like notifying me about upcoming events, the weather and the influx of emails, texts and social media DMs, the Galaxy Watch5 now features an array of intuitive tools to help smartly track my overall wellness.

With my Galaxy Watch5 and the Samsung Health App[2] on my Galaxy Z Flip4, I’m able to see detailed insights related to my sleep[3], blood pressure[4] and ECG[5] levels and more. One of my favourite features is the new Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) sensor which measures your body composition in terms of fat and skeletal muscle mass[6] – this is a super helpful way to keep an eye on progress related to your overall fitness goals. It’s also been so wonderful to be able to track other aspects of my health like my menstrual cycle[7] and the number of glasses of water I drink each day. The Galaxy Watch5 may be small but it’s no doubt a mighty companion to have on the go.

But back to the event: I was able to enter Goodlife Fitness with such ease, thanks to the Samsung Wallet app on my Galaxy Watch5. Besides my credit cards, I’m also able to store important membership cards including Goodlife Fitness. And because I can seamlessly access it on my watch, I didn’t need to fish out my wallet or from the bottom of my tote bag to beep myself in.

On every Galaxy Watch5 there is Auto Workout Tracking, which features up to 90 types of exercises. Aside from popular activities like walking, running and swimming (yes, you can even use it in water[8]!), the Galaxy Watch5 also can track specific (and sometimes more complex activities) like Pilates, golfing and rock climbing – you name it!

Since I was attending a Zumba class (a personal favourite activity of mine), I swiped to the Dancing workout prior to the warm-up to track the total duration, calories burned and my heart rate[9] post-workout, which can easily be reviewed in real time on my Galaxy Watch5.

It was quite the workout to say the least! Even though it was a shorter class than my usual Zumba classes, my heart rate jumped quite a bit, which I was easily able to check with a simple swipe to the Heart Rate[10] feature on the watch. This told me I was working hard and making strides towards improving my overall cardio-fitness.

If you’re looking to reach new wellness goals, or just stay on top of your day-to-day it really is so nice to have the Galaxy Watch5 every step of the way. I don’t know what I’d do without it!

With enhanced sleep features, One UI 5 Watch sets the standard for holistic wellness via a better night’s rest Samsung Electronics today unveiled One UI

With enhanced sleep features, One UI 5 Watch sets the standard for holistic wellness via a better night’s rest

Samsung Electronics today unveiled One UI 5 Watch[1] that will be available as part of Galaxy Watch series later this year. The new software is designed to bring an even more personalized and intuitive welness experience and includes enhancements that support better sleep as well as various fitness features.

“Samsung is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive health experience and empowering users to reach their wellness goals. Now more than ever, we believe this starts with getting a good night’s sleep,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “The new One UI 5 Watch continues our ongoing commitment to help people improve the quality of their sleep, so they can start each day fully recharged and ready for the day.”

Better Sleep: Essential to Better Wellness

Samsung has focused its efforts on three key elements for better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building better habits, and establishing a sleep-friendly environment. One UI 5 Watch delivers on these elements with an even more complete sleep experience.

The new Sleep Insights UI prominently displays the user’s sleep score to provide a clearer snapshot of the prior night’s rest, followed by related metrics like sleep phases, snoring hours and blood oxygen levels. In addition, Sleep Coaching — tailored around eight different sleep types[2] — also becomes fully accessible directly on Galaxy Watch as well as a paired phone, making for a more convenient and motivational way for users to track their habits at their convenience.

Creating a comfortable environment can make all the difference in sleep quality and even small distractions can have significant impacts. That’s why Samsung has made it easier to connect Galaxy Watch to a wide range of compatible devices. Once the user’s Galaxy Watch detects that they have fallen asleep, SmartThings lets the user switch off their connected devices to create a more conducive environment for rest. Sleep Mode swiftly mutes notifications and dims the user’s phone and watch screens and One UI 5 Watch builds on this feature by utilizing an infrared sensor rather than a green LED light to further minimize distractions.

A Smarter Fitness Partner

Personalized Heart Rate Zone has been added to Galaxy Watch’s various tailored running tools — including real-time running analysis and a customized interval training program. This new feature analyzes individual physical capabilities[3] and sets five optimal workout intensity levels (warm-up, fat burn, cardio, hard-training and max. effort). This enables users to set their own goals based on their ability, from burning fat to high-impact cardio.

Outdoor activity enthusiasts can look forward to additional benefits with Galaxy Watch Pro starting with an expanded Route Workout—which now supports running and walking alongside previously available hiking and cycling route options. Galaxy Watch Pro users can also search and access the GPX File Database directly via the Samsung Health app and receive recommendations on new routes based on inputs like location, time, rating or popularity[4].

Updates to the SOS feature enable direct communication to an emergency telephone number to relay information on the wearer’s location[5].

One UI 5 Watch will be available first on the upcoming Galaxy Watch series later this year, with further updates to be announced soon.

—

[1] Availability of the features may vary by market, carrier, model and the paired smartphone. Intended for general wellness and fitness purposes only. The features are not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of any medical condition or disease. Intended for general wellness and fitness purposes only. Users should seek any medical advice from a physician.

[2] For sleep pattern results, user must wear watch while they sleep for at least 7 nights and complete a survey.

[3] After 10 minutes of running, Galaxy Watch calculates Personalized Heart Rate Zone based on VO2max and aerobic/anoxic thresholds.

[4] Available on a paired smartphone. The selected route can be viewed on their watch.

Samsung Electronics and Natural Cycles announced a partnership to bring advanced temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking capabilities to the Galaxy Watch5 Series – the first time Natural Cycles’ ground-breaking algorithm has been adapted for a smartwatch. This latest partnership combines Samsung’s innovative sensor technology with Natural Cycles’ innovative fertility technology[1] to give users more detailed insight into their menstrual cycle[2].

“As a company that’s grounded in science and technology, we are excited to partner with Samsung to deliver a premium experience that pushes women’s wellness forward,” said Dr. Raoul Scherwitzl, co-founder and co-CEO of Natural Cycles. “The Natural Cycles app has helped millions of women around the world take control of their fertility and this partnership will allow Samsung to leverage our fertility technology to offer temperature-based cycle tracking through a smartwatch for the first time.”

Natural Cycles is committed to pioneering women’s wellness with research and passion, and leading the development of innovative fertility technology. The app is powered by a proprietary algorithm that uses body temperature and other key fertility indicators to determine each user’s unique fertility status.
Samsung is entering the next era of digital wellness monitoring with its’ advanced sensor technology, including the groundbreaking BioActive Sensor. Furthermore, the new infrared temperature sensor enables users to get a more detailed overview by tracking skin temperature changes as well as their menstrual cycle. Since January 12th[2], Galaxy users can simply create a challenge in the ‘Together’ section of the Samsung Health app to see who can either take the most number of steps in a set amount of time or who can be the first to reach a certain number of steps.
Motivation and competition can be key factors in achieving your fitness goals. This is why Samsung continues to add new features and capabilities to help you have fun while staying fit.

Group Challenge is the latest expansion of the Samsung Health Challenge features, which you can access via the Together tab on the bottom of the Samsung Health app. There is Global Challenge, the most popular type of Challenge, which enables you to enter monthly step count competitions against all Samsung Health users around the world. Samsung also introduced 1:1 Challenge, allowing you to invite one of your close friends or family members to work with you to achieve your step count goals. And now, 1:1 Challenge has evolved into Group Challenge. While you still have the option to create a one-on-one competition, you can now invite anywhere between 1 to 9 of your friends so you can work out and keep each other motivated to achieve your fitness goals, even when you’re apart. You can even create multiple Group Challenges so you can simultaneously compete with family, friends and co-workers.

Improve Your Overall Wellbeing

Since its launch in 2012 as a simple fitness tracker, Samsung Health has grown into a comprehensive wellness and fitness platform with a wide variety of features, ranging from virtual exercises and mindfulness videos to the ability to track sleep patterns and heart rate.

“In our fast-paced world – particularly in these times – achieving a healthy lifestyle isn’t always easy,” said TaeJong Jay Yang, Corporate SVP and Head of Health Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “That’s why we are continuously improving Samsung Health and adding more capabilities to give the users even more ways to stay healthy, wherever, whenever.”

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. shared its vision for the future at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The company introduced new products at its virtual press conference, showing how it is continuing to innovate by creating solutions that are flexible, intelligently connected, and use AI to make daily life seamless.

“Our world looks different, and many of you have been faced with a new reality–one where, among other things, your home has taken on a greater significance,” said Sebastian Seung, President and Head of Samsung Research, the advanced R&D hub of the company that leads the development of future technologies for Samsung Electronics’ SET (end-products), addressing the company’s efforts to enhance the at-home technology experience. “Our innovations are designed to provide more personal and more intuitive experiences that express your personality. We’re hard at work to bring you next-generation innovation, with AI as the core enabler, for your better tomorrow.”

Creating More Intimate and Personalized User Experiences

As people spent more time at home last year, the tech they wanted became the tech they needed. In relying on that tech, people came to understand the many ways connected solutions could make life easier. TVs came to be vital for entertainment—and sometimes, fitness. Chromebooks became crucial home learning tools. Smart fridges helped with remote shopping and meal prep. Smartphones became indispensable.

Samsung’s continued investments in innovations that adapt to evolving lifestyles enable the company to keep pace with rapid changes. Key innovations unveiled include:

Samsung Bespoke Refrigerator: Available in Canada later this year, the Bespoke lineup has sleek lines and a contemporary, flat-panel design that blends seamlessly into existing kitchens and various lifestyles. The Samsung Bespoke Refrigerator comes in a column format in two different sizes, allowing for modular configurations that can grow to fit each household’s unique needs. With a variety of types and colours that you can mix and match, Bespoke offers the flexibility to meet your family’s food storage needs, always keeping your food at optimal temperature.

110-inch MICRO LED: This new screen features self-lit inorganic LED with a slim and nearly bezel-less Infinity Screen design that seamlessly blends into the living space. The result is a spectacularly immersive viewing experience with astounding picture quality. The 110-inch MICRO LED also adds “4Vue” (Quad View), a four-way viewing option—so you can keep up with multiple sports at once, or stream a tutorial while playing a video game. MICRO LED will be rolled out globally beginning this spring[1].

Lifestyle TV: Samsung’s cutting-edge lifestyle TV lineup includes The Serif, The Frame, The Sero and The Terrace—a recently launched 4K QLED outdoor TV—as well as Samsung The Premiere, a cinema-like quality 4K laser projector.

SmartThings Cooking: A new service from Samsung SmartThings is designed to make your culinary journey seamless. An automatic Meal Planner powered by Whisk’s Food AI recommends meals for the whole week, makes shopping lists with the ingredients you need. Recipe instructions can be sent directly to synced Samsung cooking devices to minimize hassles and mistakes[2].

Samsung Health Smart Trainer on Samsung 2021 TVs: Samsung Health seamlessly transforms the home into a personal gym, and the new Smart Trainer[3] feature tracks and analyzes posture in real time, just like a personal trainer. During and post-workout, Smart Trainer provides feedback on form, helps you count your reps, and estimates calories burned. With video and interactive training via Bixby-enabled voice control, Samsung Health Smart Trainer elevates and personalizes the home workout experience.

Bringing AI and Robots to Daily Life including Housekeeping

Samsung has long been at the forefront of AI and robotics innovation, leveraging its seven global AI research centers to advance technology. By bringing AI to its products, Samsung is creating new home experiences—from washing machines that optimize water usage, detergents, and wash cycles, to TVs with a Quantum AI Processor that can upscale HD content into pristine near-8K resolution[4].

The major technologies featured during Samsung’s press conference include the following:

Samsung Bot Care[5]: The latest development in Samsung’s growing robotics lineup, Samsung Bot Care is designed use AI to recognize and respond to your behaviour. It will be able to act as both a robotic assistant and companion, helping to take care of the details in your life. It will also learn your schedule and habits and send you reminders to help guide you throughout your busy day.

Samsung Bot Handy[6]: Also in development, Samsung Bot Handy will rely on advanced AI to recognize and pick up objects of varying sizes, shapes and weights, becoming an extension of you and helping you with work around the house. Samsung Bot Handy will be able to tell the difference between the material composition of various objects, utilizing the appropriate amount of force to grab and move around household items and objects, working as your trusted partner to help with house chores like cleaning up messy rooms or sorting out the dishes after a meal.

Looking to the future, Samsung is also developing other tangible applications of AI technologies for daily life. Samsung is continuing to build on its Samsung Bot Retail, which would guide users outside the home in retail environments, and GEMS, Samsung’s health-focused exoskeleton as a mobility aide. These innovations allow robots and robotic devices to co-exist with humans, enhancing their lives and catering to a variety of lifestyles and different environments.

Technology for a Better Future

Samsung closed its CES 2021 press conference by sharing more on the brand’s vision for how technology can enable progress and create a better tomorrow for all. Samsung believes that there is no single all-encompassing solution; a sustainable future requires investments across a broad spectrum. That’s why Samsung is focused on three key areas that are poised to benefit the most from technological innovation: sustainability, education, and accessibility.

“At Samsung, we are always looking for ways to build a better, more sustainable future,” said Sandeep Rana, Senior Manager, Environmental Sustainability Specialist at Samsung, who shared Samsung’s sustainability message at the press conference. “With a focus on the environment, people and society, we will continue to provide our consumers with responsible tools and technologies to address our challenges today and enable a better future for all.”

As part of its commitment to creating a circular economy, Samsung is developing programs and packaging solutions that promote a sustainable product lifecycle—from beginning to end:

Galaxy Upcycling at Home: At the CES event, Samsung announced an update to its Galaxy Upcycling program called Galaxy Upcycling at Home. The new program reimagines the lifecycle of an older Galaxy phone and offers consumers options on how they might be able to repurpose their device to create a variety of convenient IoT tools.

TV Eco Packaging: In addition, Samsung announced that its eco-packaging would expand to QLED, UHD TV, monitor, and audio products in 2021. As part of an ongoing commitment to eco-consciousness, Samsung is creating products and solutions with sustainability at the core. For example, Samsung’s new Solar Cell Remote Control—made in part with recycled plastic—can be charged via solar, indoor lighting or USB, reducing battery waste.

Believing that future generations will play a critical role in building a sustainable future, Samsung has also prioritized technology education through Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, which encourages young people to creatively use technology to solve community challenges.

Samsung also highlighted at the CES event how it is making its products even more inclusive and accessible for all. The SeeColours application is designed to help those with colour vision deficiencies (CVD) to adjust the settings on their 2021 QLED TVs for a better viewing experience, and the Sign Language Zoom feature on TVs ensures that everyone, regardless of ability, can easily enjoy cutting-edge technology.

Lastly, understanding how challenging it can be to strike a balance between our digital and analog lives, Samsung presented the Digital Wellbeing feature, designed to help people take control and manage their digital time—so they can use technology to better their lives and empower themselves.

From working at home to working up a sweat, you might be surprised by just how much you can do with your Samsung Smart TV. That’s because, in addition to offering a next-level viewing experience, Samsung’s newest TVs come packed with innovations designed to amplify our enjoyment of all kinds of content.

The TVs’ immersive displays are just as suitable for streaming heart-pumping workouts as they are for catching up on the latest binge-worthy show. And with simple controls for managing apps and connected devices, they make it easier to stay productive when working from home.

Read on for our tips on getting the most out of your Samsung Smart TV.

Enjoy Free Live TV

** Channel offerings may vary depending on region.

With Samsung TV Plus[1] Smart TV users get instant access to over 20 channels spanning news, sports, entertainment and more – so they’ll never be at a loss when sitting down to stream.

Samsung TV Plus is 100% free, and comes pre-installed on all 2017 to 2020 Samsung Smart TVs. No downloads, additional devices, or credit cards required. With a simple internet connection, you can pick up where you left off on recently watched shows, discover new ones, and access video-on-demand services with ease.

With an ever-growing list of free channels – including CBC News, Wired, Funny or Die, TMZ and FilmRise Free Movies – Samsung TV Plus offers entertainment for every taste.

Work Up a Sweat

As much as we might enjoy our commute-free routines when working or studying from home, it’s still important to stay active throughout the day – even if that means turning your living room into a workout studio.

Luckily for Samsung Smart TV users, at-home workout videos catering to virtually all interests and abilities are just a few taps away.

Simply click on the exercise service of your choice, choose a workout to stream, and get started. It’s as simple as that. With the TVs’ high resolution, you’ll never miss a step while working up a sweat. And with a variety of services available and more on the way, it’s easy to find the content you need to take your fitness routine to the next level.

Samsung’s new Samsung Health service offers a simple solution to satisfy Smart TV users’ fitness and wellness needs. Set to launch at the end of May in Canada, Samsung Health[2] combines free fitness content from world-class partners including the popular meditation app, Calm[3], as well as expert coaches who will teach you new fitness programs including stretching, weight loss, endurance training, and more. Compatible with 2018-2019 Samsung Smart TVs, the apps make it easy for users to workout at home.[4]

Work More Comfortably From Home

In addition to offering a range of options to help keep users active and entertained at home, Samsung Smart TVs make it easier to stay productive when it’s time to get to work.

In 2019, Samsung introduced its exclusive Remote Access feature. Available on the company’s latest Smart TVs, it allows users to remotely access and manage their personal computer(s) through their TV, regardless of their PC’s location.[5]

Remote Access also offers a wide variety of cloud-based documentation services that can make it easier for students to continue studying at home. They can even use a web browser to view online courses and live lectures on their TV’s spacious screen so they won’t miss a single note or detail.

Remote Access also comes equipped with Wi-Fi Direct which facilitates seamless screen sharing between TVs and PCs, mobile phones and tablets. This versatile feature opens the door for users to enjoy a wide range of content on their TV’s larger screen.

Find Some Peace and Quiet

Even the most media-savvy among us occasionally find ourselves needing to take a break from staring at screens to enjoy some peace and quiet. Thankfully, Samsung TVs’ Ambient Mode can help us do just that.

Ambient Mode enables Smart TVs to foster a relaxing environment by displaying works of art, family photos and other calming content when turned off. For those times when you’d like to completely tune out, you can program Ambient Mode to match the wallpaper or background of the space behind your TV so your screen will blend seamlessly into its surroundings.

Transforming your TV into your own personal photo gallery is now easy thanks to Tap View. Available on Samsung’s latest TVs, Tap View lets you mirror photos and other media to your TV’s screen with a simple tap of your smartphone. And with QLED displays’ revolutionary image technology, you can rest assured that your favourite snaps will be showcased in the full, high-resolution quality they deserve.
