Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the global launch of the KMC-W, an updated Windows version of the Samsung Kiosk, winner of an ISE Best of Show award from AV Technology at Integrated Systems Europe 2023. The new version of the Kiosk features an interactive 24-inch display that brings expanded software compatibility to advanced self-service display technology for the food and beverage, retail, travel and healthcare industries.

The convenience of contactless technology has become critical for businesses to meet consumer demand across various industries and applications, including bill payments, drive-thru, self-ordering, smart cafés, and unmanned fitting rooms.

“The retail landscape is changing based on consumer behaviors and rising demand for contactless and non-cash payment methods,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As this trend accelerates not just in retail but also in the food and beverage, healthcare, travel, and other sectors, the Samsung Kiosk is the future-ready solution industries need to respond to global demand.”

Powerful Performance, Versatile Applications

Built on the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise operating system (OS), the KMC-W expands the Samsung Kiosk’s OS compatibility to meet the needs of customers in various business environments. Powered by the 11th Gen Intel Core Processor,[1] it offers high performance computing power and full compatibility with major ordering, point-of-sale, and property management system software. Accordingly, the display comes equipped with various CPU options — including a choice of Intel Celeron 6305E, Core i3 or Core i5 processors — as well as fast 8GB DRAM memory and a 256GB SSD for greater storage capacity.

“It’s great to see the launch of the new KMC-W, which leverages the 11th Gen Intel Core Processor Enterprise Edition and the powerful Windows 10 IoT Enterprise OS to expand customer choices,” said Analisa Roberts, General Manager, Global Device Partners at Microsoft. “With 8GB of DRAM and a 256GB SSD, it provides ultra-fast processing and ample storage space to meet evolving industry demands.”

Offering more interfaces for third-party peripherals, the KMC-W supports a wide range of use cases across industries. Its extensive integration capabilities enable it to meet the needs of a wide range of businesses, from hotels and airports to convenience stores, restaurants, and pharmacies. Businesses can tailor their Kiosks for various scenarios, including using them as ID/passport scanners, external cameras, payment terminals, and vending machines.

The KMC-W’s compact design and flexible features make it suitable for virtually any business environment. Its flexible installation options, which enable it to be affixed to a countertop, wall mount,[2] or a stand that can be positioned anywhere to seamlessly blend in with its surroundings, allow businesses to save time, cost, and space without the need for additional construction.

Enabling More Personalized Customer Experiences Around the World

The Samsung Kiosk Tizen version, launched in 2021, allows businesses and retailers around the world to optimize the customer journey. With the new Samsung Kiosk Windows version, retails can enjoy the business advantages of the Kiosk display whether they use Tizen or Windows OS.

In the Philippines, fast food chain KFC currently uses Samsung Kiosks on Windows OS at 63 locations. The Kiosks create an in-store digital experience for KFC customers, enabling them to self-serve and enjoy a more personalized and convenient visit. To continue enhancing its customer experience, the company will install Kiosks at more than 100 additional stores by the end of the year.

French company LAPEYRE, which manufactures and sells equipment for home kitchens, bathrooms, doors, and windows, has installed Samsung Kiosks operating on Windows OS throughout its stores. As a growing franchise with 126 locations in France and 25 new stores set to open across the country by 2025, the company has partnered with Samsung to digitalize services to boost business and attract new customers. The rollout includes 100 Kiosks to display queue status, 70 Kiosks to support fast self-ordering, and 300 Kiosks for consumers to browse the company’s product catalog and customize their product using configurators on the kiosks, generating more sales and enhancing the customer experience.

In addition, made-to-order restaurant company Duck Donuts Powered by GRUBBRR is currently utilizing Samsung Kiosks based on the Tizen OS. The company’s rollout enhanced the purchase experience at 30 of its stores across the U.S., improving customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. With personalized ordering and easy-to-read menus, Duck Donuts was able to strengthen its customer relationships and drive revenue.

In an era when contactless is king, Aisle 24 was already ahead of the game. Founded in 2015 by John Douang, the “cashierless” grocery store model now seems prophetic. But even the innovative grocer, which turns standard retail and underutilized residential spaces into the future of convenience stores, needed an upgrade for the new normal. As business expanded across Canada and demand increased for safer, contactless shopping, Aisle 24 adopted Samsung Canada’s digital signage solutions.

Offering a completely contactless in-store experience, select Aisle 24 locations now feature Samsung Kiosks that allow customers to pay for their groceries quickly and easily with an intuitive, all-in-one payment system[1]. The eye-catching Kiosks not only improve the customer experience, but also provide streamlined management tools which allow stores to access Kiosks and check performance from any web-accessible device with ease.

The Samsung Kiosk is a flexible solution with a variety of benefits and cost savings for Aisle 24, from speeding up transactions to making information readily available to customers as well as ensuring information is accurate and up-to-date. Plus, it eliminates the health and safety risks of staff-customer interactions at checkout counters.

“As a young company, we wanted to create a splash in the market, not just with our business model, but with our customer experience, and the Samsung Canada range of display solutions gave us just that,” said John Douang, CEO and President of Aisle 24. “Samsung’s industry-leading digital signage, including its all-in-one Kiosk, have allowed us to meet the diverse needs of our customers and provide a new and innovative grocery experience.”

In addition, every Aisle 24 location now features 65-inch Samsung Digital Displays, allowing stores to meaningfully engage with customers and provide accurate, current promotional materials. With seamless integration support from technology partner 900Solutions, Samsung display solutions have allowed Aisle 24 to engage its customers in a more meaningful way as well as create a “wow” factor and succeed in its marketing goals.

“As the ways in which we shop change, innovations like our Kiosk and digital displays allow businesses to control costs and provide customers with a more streamlined in-store experience,” said Mary Peterson, Vice President, IT and Enterprise Solutions at Samsung Electronics Canada.

As the world continues to become more digital, Samsung offers a wide range of innovative solutions to help businesses become more efficient while still delivering on their promise to provide high-quality customer service.

The article was published by CanadianSME in their issue no. 35

If a picture paints a thousand words, Samsung Canada display technologies paint millions. With digital transformation at the forefront of business conversations in recent years, innovative display solutions have surged in quality and uptake, with more companies leveraging tech to help improve operations and performance.

Over the last two years, the use of tech to transform the customer experience has never been more important as businesses seek to offer in-store services that inform and support visitors while also working to maintain safe and socially distanced environments across Canada. In the past year, small businesses have often borne the brunt of measures to ensure social distancing, and in order to help keep from closing their doors, entrepreneurs have had to source new solutions to assist them in riding out the unpredictable economic landscape.

As the economy continues to reopen across the country and adapt to new protocols, Samsung Canada display technologies help provide excellent solutions for in-store experiences that assist with providing a socially distanced environment for customers and employees, while pushing businesses to the next level.

For businesses, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to tech needs. From retail to hospitality, every operation has a unique set of challenges and goals, with different processes for managing employees be it from home or office. Restaurants look for ways to entice customers and communicate offers while offices require new ways to hold large board meetings and manage workflow. Samsung Canada has a range of digital display products that can help all types of small businesses meet their particular needs.

The innovative display of the Samsung Business TV engages customers with eye-catching visuals. Samsung designed this TV to help restaurants, retail stores, salons, and other consumer-facing businesses with innovative and high-impact digital signage. The Business TV has more than 100 pre-loaded templates for businesses to really up the ante in their stores. Businesses can also trim traditional marketing costs with these TVs, as they allow owners to update the displays directly from their own phones, without the need to print menus or promotional materials.

In the age of “contactless” experiences, the Samsung Kiosk offers space-saving and compact design to help cater to employee and customer needs. The Kiosk, an intuitive all-in-one payment and ordering system, assists in reducing the number of one-to-one interactions with the customers, and can provide an enhanced service experience.

Long gone are the days when all office meetings were confined to conference rooms. With virtual and hybrid workforces becoming the new normal, people frequently clock in from home and participate in virtual meetings, which can all be facilitated easily with the Samsung Interactive Display Flip 3.0. This innovative display helps simplify teamwork, allowing users to share notes, sketch out and brainstorm new ideas, present plans, and collaborate with ease. The Interactive Display’s 4K UHD picture quality renders teamwork in vivid, eye-catching quality and can be synced with compatible personal devices to share real-time content.

In an ever-changing business landscape, Samsung continues to evolve its products and prioritize small businesses with adaptable technology. Its digital displays are the latest way in which the tech innovator has worked to provide enhanced experiences for not only business owners but also for their customers.

Recent changes to social dynamics have shifted consumer preferences towards takeout meals, with customers now often opting to pick their food up from the restaurant and take it away.

Located in Samseong-Dong, an affluent neighborhood in Seoul, Tim Ho Wan recently installed a Samsung Kiosk to create a more convenient takeout experience. So, how do the manager, chef, and regulars at this location of Tim Ho Wan rate the Samsung Kiosk? Samsung Newsroom visited the restaurant to find out.

[Upgrading for Customers] Takeout or Dine-in? Samsung Kiosk Streamlines Customer Experiences

The kiosk at the Samseong-dong location of Tim Ho Wan is located to the right of the counter, highly visible to customers upon entering. The kiosk’s placement also helps lead to more efficient use of space, as it allows dine-in and takeout customers to enter different parts of the restaurant. It only takes a minute or two for customers to select, order, and pay for their meals, all without assistance from a waiter or clerk. The orders are then instantly transferred to the kitchen, helping further reduce wait times.

Following the introduction of the kiosk, customers who were previously reluctant to visit the restaurant due to long wait times started stopping by more often. One customer said “I went to the Tim Ho Wan in Samseong-dong frequently when it first opened, but I stopped coming for a while because it was always too busy. However, I started coming again after the kiosk was installed because the takeout ordering process became so convenient and made the long waiting times a thing of the past.”

Other customers have been enjoying the kiosk too, with an international couple sighted placing an order on the kiosk. The Samsung Kiosk offers English and Korean language options on its main screen, allowing international customers to easily navigate the menu and other options. Chuckling, the couple said, “Thanks to the kiosk’s English option, we were able to choose our meal without asking the waiter for help.”

[Upgrading for Chefs] From Streamlining Order Processing to Allowing Better Inventory Management

With the kiosk sending orders directly to the kitchen, restaurant workers can now process orders at a faster pace too. Before the kiosk was installed, customers had to take a menu and then relay their order to a waiter, who entered it into the POS system. Now this time-consuming step is mostly eliminated, allowing chefs to save as much as two to three minutes per order. The restaurant’s chef, Cheol Woong Kang, spoke to the significance of this, saying, “You may not think two to three minutes is much time, but during peak times, when the number of orders we receive drastically increases, the time the kiosk saves is invaluable.”

Another advantage of having the kiosk is that the solution collects takeout order data separately from dine-in order data. By using the kiosk, Tim Ho Wan in Samseong-dong is able to identify which menu items have a high takeout order rate and utilize this data to prepare ingredients and manage inventory. Chef Kang (pictured above) said “At first, we prepared a large quantity of the ingredients needed to make our signature steamed BBQ pork buns, assuming they would be ordered the most. But after analyzing the data collected by the kiosk, we realized that our most popular dim sum offerings (shrimp, shrimp and pork and spinach and shrimp-flavoured) were demonstrating higher-than-expected takeout order rates.”

As the kiosk enables separation of dine-in and takeout order data, the team at the restaurant was also able to manage sales more efficiently. Previously, restaurants had struggled to identify why certain dishes were being ordered for takeout at certain times of the day, as well as what was causing changes in sales volumes. Chef Kang noted that, “According to our sales data analysis, when it came to takeout orders, customers preferred dim sum over noodles or fried food. Thus, we pay special attention to preserving their taste and freshness as much as possible when packaging these dishes.”

[Upgrading for Managers] A Broad Range of Benefits, Including a Reliable After-Sales Service

With more customers preferring takeout, restaurants are increasingly required to handle both dine-in and to-go orders at the same time these days. Many restaurants are thus turning to kiosks to allow them to provide better service, even when they have limited resources available.

Famous for its renowned quality and value, Tim Ho Wan in Samseong-dong is often crowded at mealtimes. The restaurant thus introduced the kiosk to help both improve employee efficiency and increase customer satisfaction. The results were impressive. Cashiers no longer had to balance taking orders and processing payments, and the restaurant became less crowded with dine-in and takeout customers visiting different areas of the premises.

Branch manager Mr. Je Hyeon Cho (pictured above) related that “Initially, handing over the menu and explaining the ordering process to customers were important parts of our service. But the installation of the kiosk has now dispensed with that part of the process altogether. Now, peak times have become much easier to handle, and we can focus more on attending to our dine-in customers’ needs. Plus, our takeout customers are satisfied too, as the kiosk allows them to proceed straight from ordering to paying without waiting.”

At the end of the day, these kiosks are still machines. Users are therefore required to maintain them and respond quickly if they experience errors. One of the advantages of the Samsung Kiosk is that errors can be resolved in real-time via remote control, helping reduce disruptions. Mr. Cho noted that “Once, there was a time when the screen froze as a customer inserted a card into the kiosk to make the payment[1]. But, on this occasion, the call centre was able to solve the problem immediately via remote support. Knowing there is a reliable after-sales service there to back you up really makes you feel secure when running a restaurant like this one.”

It has been seven months since Tim Ho Wan in Samseong-dong installed the Samsung Kiosk, and the staff is loving the convenient ordering, smart data management and efficient space utilization that it provides. Mr. Cho wasn’t shy when speaking about how the future looks with the Samsung Kiosk, relating that, “In the future, when we develop seasonal offerings and new core dishes, we look forward to actively advertising them by displaying them at the top of the kiosk’s main screen.”
