SmartThings Energy to integrate with Tesla’s API for new energy monitoring experience

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it has established a service integration with Tesla, to be showcased at CES® 2024, that will connect SmartThings Energy to Tesla products such as Powerwall home battery, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging solutions and electric vehicles (EVs). Made possible through Tesla’s open APIs[1], this collaboration will result in the further expansion of SmartThings Energy’s already-comprehensive level of connectivity and contribute to Samsung’s ultimate goal of enabling more convenient, seamless home experiences for consumers.

“Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage and monitor the power status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring more access and connectivity,” said Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team of Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics. “This new collaboration is a key milestone for Samsung Electronics in making our solution more widely available beyond home appliances.”

Samsung’s collaboration with Tesla allows SmartThings Energy to connect to Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging and EVs, allowing SmartThings Energy to display information relating to users’ energy production, storage and usage.

Additionally, consumers will be able to use SmartThings Energy to sync with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function. This means that in the case of extreme weather events such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users can be alerted through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and mobiles in addition to the Tesla app. What’s more, they can activate AI Energy Mode to help extend the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). Through this partnership, the companies plant to develop solutions for future lifestyles that integrate the smart home and connected cars.

The two companies will work together for the next-generation smart home to connect Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including EVs to develop the “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services, as well as an integrated home energy management service.

The Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services connect the smart home with in-vehicle infotainment systems, allowing for remote control in both directions. Through the SmartThings platform, users will be able to perform a variety of actions pertaining to their cars while at home — starting them, controlling smart air conditioning, opening and closing windows, and checking their charging status. And from cars, the control of home appliances such as TVs, air conditioners and EV chargers will also be possible.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

Users will be able to adjust their environments with SmartThings by simultaneously operating multiple devices — including vehicles — through routines such as “good morning routine” and “arriving home routine.” For example, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm goes off, SmartThings can be programmed to have the curtains automatically open, and the lights and television turn on. Users can also set their SmartThings so that when they are ready to go out for work, their car will adjust itself to an ideal temperature. Also, users’ smartphone and TV screens can display information such as the EV’s remaining battery and driving range.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center. “We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful.”

The integrated home energy management service will allow users to monitor how much energy is consumed by the connected devices in their homes. Energy information of their EVs and chargers will also be available, enabling users to adjust the optimal time for charging their vehicles. EVs connected to the integrated home energy management service offer the possibility of automatically setting the optimal time for charging by factoring in different pricing by time of day[1], the power demand response (DR) program[2], photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) data[3], and time-specific carbon emissions[4].

To further strengthen Car-to-Home services, Samsung is working closely with HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade” is a digital cockpit package product that allows hardware and software upgrades. With Ready Upgrade, users will be able to install SmartThings functions to utilize various Car-to-Home services.

HCA introduces its HCA Specification 1.0, a new industry standard set by Samsung and other HCA members to provide consumers with even more interoperable and energy-efficient connected home solutions

At CES 2023, the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) announced a milestone, introducing its HCA Specification 1.0 for Cloud-to-Cloud (C2C) interoperability in the connected home. The launch of this new industry standard comes just one year after the launch of the organization at last year’s CES event.

The HCA is an organization founded by manufacturers of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, home appliances and TVs. The HCA was created with the goal of developing safe, interoperable standards for connected home ecosystems.

As a founding member of the Alliance, Samsung Electronics continues to relentlessly pursue innovation, including the leading SmartThings platform, to aid in HCA’s mission to develop standards that promote interconnectivity.

“Through combined industry efforts in HCA, we are working to make the smart home more accessible to consumers via the devices they use every day in the home,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Service Biz Group of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are taking a fresh look at how devices can enhance consumers’ lives and how the appliance industry can work together to create a safer connected home that our customers can trust. Through energy savings and support for legacy household products, we believe that we can contribute to a world where sustainability starts at home.”

Interoperability to Promote Compatibility

The HCA Specification 1.0 expands on existing industry standards to clearly define interoperability standards that ensure products such as appliances, HVAC systems and TVs operate seamlessly across brands, including legacy appliances already operating in consumers’ homes.

As a pioneer in the smart home industry, the SmartThings platform has paved the way for interoperability within the connected home. SmartThings supports Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled devices from a range of manufacturers, as well as first-party smart home appliances, providing consumers with more convenience and options within their connected home.

With the introduction of the HCA Specification 1.0, this enhanced interoperable experience will soon make the connected home attainable by more consumers.

Bringing Sustainability Into the Heart of the Connected Home

The release of the HCA Specification 1.0 paves the way for enhanced energy efficiency throughout a consumer’s entire connected home through holistic data insights. Customers can raise their Energy IQ by identifying the appliances and devices in their homes that consume the most energy and adjust their usage accordingly.

Furthermore, innovations like SmartThings AI Energy Mode allow consumers to automatically manage their energy usage and costs using intelligent, real-time insights via a single app on their smartphone. The HCA Specification 1.0 enables member brands to provide consumers with sustainability-focused, actionable insights for better energy efficiency and savings.

Competitors Working Together for Our Consumers’ Connected Future

The introduction of the HCA Specification 1.0 for interoperability is just the first step in the HCA’s standards journey. The HCA is already working in parallel with energy industry leaders to provide even more energy-efficient solutions across the household.

HCA currently includes 15 global brands, including Samsung, Membership provides the opportunity to collaboratively innovate and share expertise with peers to further develop the connected home ecosystem and bring more convenience and options to consumers.

With almost 250 million registered users across over 108 million connected devices, Samsung is leveraging its leadership within the smart home industry, and is working hand in hand with fellow HCA members, to develop and launch new solutions within the connected home landscape.

The HCA C2C interoperability demonstration is open to the public at CES 2023 as part of the Smart Home exhibition – Venetian Expo Centre Booth #52739 – taking place from January 5th to 8th in Las Vegas. This technical demonstration features HCA member company solutions that leverage C2C connectivity to enable multiple apps to control multiple brands of appliances, HVAC systems and TVs for optimized interoperability.

About Home Connectivity Alliance

The Home Connectivity Alliance is a member-driven organization comprised of 15 global brands dedicated to the development and promotion of safe and secure interoperability and energy savings across long-life appliances, HVAC systems and TVs within the connected home ecosystem.

To address our planet’s ongoing challenges, Samsung highlighted how it continues to prioritize the environment through a combination of sustainability targets, innovative product design, and strategic partnerships. As a result, by 2050, all of Samsung’s businesses will match their electricity needs with renewable energy and reach net zero carbon emissions. In the nearer term, the DX Division will transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2027 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

To further the company’s sustainability goals, Samsung outlined how Everyday Sustainability—building sustainability features into the company’s most popular products and services—will contribute to a better environment. This includes creating more sustainable products through innovative design in materials and energy efficiency.

“By building sustainability into the product experience, we, and the many people around the world who use our products, can contribute to a healthier planet,” said Inhee Chung, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability Center at Samsung. “As a result, some of our most popular products are now some of our most sustainable.”

Samsung announced that many of its TVs and smartphones use recycled materials, including recycled plastic from discarded finishing nets, while the company’s home appliances, memory and 5G radio network chipsets are contributing to energy savings for customers. In addition, Samsung’s connected services, such as SmartThings Energy and AI Energy Mode are also helping consumers to save energy and cut costs while lowering the overall climate impact.

Like the Less Microfibre Cycle, Samsung and Patagonia recently developed the new Less Microfibre which reduces microplastic discharge by preventing them from escaping into the ocean at the end of a wash cycle.

The newest brand campaign from Samsung continues with three new video spots showcasing the real, meaningful connections Canadians can make using Samsung technology. In the latest campaign spots, basketball star athlete Fred VanVleet, creative producer Mr. KOA, and content creator Isabelle Cheng, are leaning into their personal passions and crafts to illustrate how Canadians can “Do The SmartThings!” with connected devices that seamlessly work together.

Whether interacting with a fan, tackling a photo shoot, or creating delicious-looking food content, Fred, Isabelle, and Mr. KOA are all utilizing the power of Samsung products and SmartThings to make these experiences more efficient and enriching. We recently caught up with the stars of the videos to learn more about the meaningful connections they experienced with others through Samsung technology.

In the latest spot, up and coming basketball star and Team Canada athlete, Deniya Prawl, plays video games on her Neo QLED TV online with another gamer – not knowing that on the other end of the line is the star athlete Fred VanVleet, who surprises her with a call on her Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4. You can watch the latest video here.

We sat down with Deniya, Isabelle and Mr. KOA to learn more about their experiences with Samsung’s meaningful connections campaign, and how they themselves continue to leverage connectivity in their everyday lives.

What role does Samsung technology play in helping you perfect your craft?

Mr. KOA: The Samsung Galaxy lineup’s ease of use and customization features not only help me get all my work done efficiently, they make things look the way I want to, and make my experiences enjoyable.

Isabelle Cheng: My phone is central to my job as a food-focused content creator! I love my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Deniya Prawl: My Samsung TV helps me watch all of my favourite basketball games, learning from other amazing players.

How does technology help you balance your day-to-day life?

Mr. KOA: I live a very fast-paced and extremely unpredictable lifestyle. I absolutely rely on technology to keep me organized, to help edit and design work, as well as visual capabilities to present to clients.

Isabelle Cheng: To be honest, I would be completely lost without technology. I use my Samsung Galaxy Watch Active to track my sleep, workouts, and even make sure I get enough water – especially helpful when I’m busy. For work, I always tell people I live and die by my calendar. Being able to have all my appointments and other info at my fingertips on my phone is critical.

Deniya Prawl: Because I’m a basketball player, it’s so important for me to study the game. Watching games or footage from practice using technology helps improve my IQ and learn different moves.

Can you tell us about your experience building connections in your vignette?

Mr. KOA: Being surprised by my cousin on my Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 was definitely an unexpected but welcome surprise – especially when we met in person! I recently made the decision to pick up my entire life and move from Toronto to LA at the start of this year. The transition has been quite challenging, and I hadn’t seen friends or family for almost a year. Being able to connect so easily and quickly was incredible.

Isabelle Cheng: I was able to connect with a good friend of mine that moved to Vancouver. When someone who is important to you moves across the country it can be difficult. I was so shocked when she surprised me on video chat as I was expecting someone else. It was easy to connect the Galaxy Z Flip4 to Samsung The Frame TV so I could chat comfortably on such a large screen. Even better was when she ended up surprising me in person!

Deniya Prawl: It was a great experience to connect with Fred live using my Galaxy Z Flip4! I’ve watched him play for so many years and I’m a huge fan – I was so surprised and grateful for the experience.

Provide an example of a meaningful connection that technology has enabled for you.

Mr. KOA: I recently launched a dating card game called THE FIRST DATE GAME. Thanks to technology, the game has been able to reach thousands of people – all from something I created at home.

Isabelle Cheng: Over the past two years, technology was essential to help me stay connected to my friends and loved ones who I wasn’t able to see. Having technology makes those times feel a lot less lonely until you’re able to hug in-person again.

Deniya Prawl: A lot of my family lives in Jamaica, and they all use Samsung devices, which helps us communicate with each other despite the distance.

Samsung has long been innovating across its mobile, home entertainment, home office and digital appliance products, to help Canadians curate intuitive, integrated experiences.

For two consecutive years, Samsung achieved double-digit growth in brand value

Samsung Electronics has been recognized by Interbrand, a global brand consultancy, as one of the top five in the Best Global Brands 2022. Each year, Interbrand announces the world’s top 100 brands, and Samsung’s brand value was evaluated for USD 87.7 billion, which represents 17% growth compared to USD 74.6 billion in 2021, ranking the company in fifth place for three years in a row.

The achievement was based on Samsung’s restored financial performance, which is now near pre-pandemic levels, and higher demand for memory due to an increase in data usage. In 2021, Samsung scored a brand value growth of 20 percent compared to 2020 and this year, continues the double-digit growth. Samsung first entered the top 10 list in 2012, placing in ninth position, and has managed to rise in the chart each year, reaching sixth place in 2017 and fifth place in 2020.

“Samsung Electronics was able to record two consecutive years of double-digit growth in brand value, all thanks to the support from our global customers,” said YH Lee, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Electronics. “In return, the entire company will work together as a team to provide a better and more satisfying customer experience.”

Various Factors Evaluated by Interbrand to Build the Samsung Brand Value

At the end of 2021, Samsung Electronics merged its SET Division and created the Device eXperience Division to increase synergy among its products and provide a next level of experience to customers. Furthermore, Samsung also launched the Customer eXperience-Multi Device Experience Centre to strengthen its multi-device connection experience.

Along with these measures, Samsung has integrated the SmartThings across its product categories, creating an inclusive ecosystem and a multi-device experience. SmartThings also empowers consumers to get the most out of their Samsung devices, as well as third-party products they may already own.

In addition, Samsung’s Future Generation Lab has been created to foster authentic conversations around the activities of the next generation. The insights from the lab have been applied to the products and marketing activities.

As well as innovative products based on consumer experiences, the development of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, automotive and robotics through consistent investment also played a role in Samsung’s growth.

As a champion of an open ecosystem, Samsung has long been innovating across its mobile, home entertainment, home office and digital appliance products, helping Canadians to Do The SmartThings! with connected device experiences that enrich their daily lives. Samsung products are designed to work seamlessly together which, together with customized design and features, helps Canadians curate intuitive, integrated experiences.

To help showcase the real ways that connected devices show up in Canadians’ lives, Samsung is helping five Canadians create meaningful connections with others through its innovative technology. The new campaign includes famous athlete Fred VanVleet as well as sports media personality Faizal Khamisa.

To kick off the series, we sat down with champion kickboxer Farinaz Lari, whose video showed an emotional reunion with a childhood best friend. Farinaz trained her best friend, Sogol, through Google Meet on her Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, which seamlessly connected to her NEO QLED 8K TV. As a world champion kickboxer, entrepreneur, public speaker and model, connectivity is a key element of Farinaz’s day-to-day activities – especially when it comes to training her clients.

In your opinion, what was the best part about using Samsung devices in this video?

I’ve been loving the health and wellness features on the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 and have been eyeing a new NEO QLED 8K TV as well – the picture quality was superb!

How does technology help you balance your day-to-day life, i.e., personal wellness and professional responsibilities?

It’s everything – from training my clients online, to monitoring my own detailed results for years to help me improve! I encourage my clients to monitor their calorie burn and heart rate variables as well so I can compare their data.

How did it feel being reunited with your best friend Sogol after three years?

It was the most magical experience! I had never been that surprised in my entire life. I cried, I laughed – it was truly a dream.

In your vignette, you had the opportunity to train with Sogol. Can you tell us about that experience?

The amazing quality of the top-speed Samsung products made me feel connected to her like she was there! Plus, they were so easy to use. I’m still talking about this experience to all my friends.

Provide an example of a meaningful connection that technology has made possible for you.

To me, it means seeing my friends and family and being able to talk and connect with them. My immediate family live in Iran, so seeing them on such a large screen, with such clear quality and sound, is the most meaningful connection to me.

Why did you decide to get involved with this campaign?

I train the majority of my clients online; I’ve been doing it for the past three years now! I’m really passionate about having premium equipment to ensure my clients have the best experience, especially when it comes to having access to and measuring data. Being able to bring this to life for Canadians as well was a dream come true.

Why did you choose to partner with Samsung?

It’s such a well-known, prestigious brand in Canada. I was excited to get involved!
