In 2002, Samsung built up a long-term strategy to focus on and nurture its System LSI business and established SoC R&D Center in the Giheung plant. In 2004, Samsung established a System LSI R&D Center in Hangzhou, China.

Home appliances complex in Suzhou, China established

Samsung Electronics established the second home appliances complex in Suzhou, China. The complex started out with a capacity of 2 million units of air-conditioners and compressors and it started to operate since 2003. At that time, the Chinese air-conditioner market held large potential for growth. Therefore, it was a meaningful step for Samsung Electronics.

Considered one of the most authoritative studies of the global IT industry, BusinessWeek ranks Samsung Electronics as the number one player in the global IT industry. The study awarded Samsung the number one slot on the basis of an in depth study of the company’s strong performance across various critical parameters including revenues, revenue growth, return on equity, shareholder return and profits.

Mass Production of 1GB Flash Memory began

Samsung Electronics developed 0.15 micron Flash processing technology using DRAM processing technology. Samsung applied the technology into 1 GB Flash memory as well as 64Mb, 128Mb, 256Mb Flash memory devices to reduce the cost.

Hand sculptures at de Gaulle airport in France installed

Samsung Electronics installed hand sculptures with Samsung mobile phones at 22 airports across the world, beginning at France’s Charles De Gaulle International airport in 2002.

Samsung Electronics ranked No.1 in NAND flash and DDI market

Samsung expanded its market leading position in the global semiconductor industry, adding NAND flash memory and display driver ICs (DDIs) to its no.1 market share product segments. Samsung Electronics marked 54% of market share in NAND flash market in 2002. In addition, Samsung Electronics becomes the number two semiconductor maker around the world.
