Samsung presents a new vision of the future of television at Fuorisalone 2016, where technological innovation and design seamlessly blend. NIGHT&DAY, a Samsung exhibition at Superstudio Più, open to the public from 12 to 17 April, symbolises a perfect duo formed by two different worlds and styles that meet to give rise to a new concept of television.

NIGHT – The leading technological expression of Samsung TVs

At Fuorisalone, Samsung reveals the arrival of its spectacular new 2016 SUHD TV line-up, a symbol of technological innovation that does not forget the importance of design.

With unrivalled image quality, the KS range is the first series of TVs in the world without a frame: from the premium 9000 series to the 7000 series models, all are available in curved and flat screen versions and represent what Samsung calls Design 360; where all aspects of the new TVs, down to the smallest detail, are attentively cared for, including the rear.

Samsung 2016 SUHD TVs feature a 10-bit panel with Quantum dot technology for ultra-realistic images, unparalleled brightness, and outstanding contrast with colours that are even more faithful to reality. Displays with Quantum dot technology are able to convert light from all colours of the visible spectrum, without distorting or effecting the level of luminosity, for the optimum visual experience within the lighting of the surrounding environment.

All Samsung SUHD TVs offer an exceptional HDR (High Dynamic Range) experience with luminosity values of at least 1,000 nit for optimal contrast between light and dark images. In addition, the new Ultra Black technology reduces light reflections, further improving the quality of the image while keeping reverberation to a minimum.

With the support of the Tizen operating system, the new TVs make it even easier to find and access user preferred content and services, whether television programmes, films or games, everything is conveniently accessible from one platform thanks to the renewed Smart Hub. In addition, it automatically recognises the peripheral (set-top box, console, OTT box…) or home theatre system connected and manages all external devices via the smart remote control, without the need for additional settings.

At Superstudio Più, brand new audio range developments will also be displayed, including the Wireless Audio 360 speakers, which expand the line-up with two new models: R3 and R1. The omni-directional speakers are characterised by a new built-in tap-and-swipe user interface and an improved Multiroom app, available for smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. The proprietary Ring-Radiator technology meanwhile diffuses sound across the entire room, enabling listeners to live the same acoustic experience at whatever point they are stood.

Samsung has also launched the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the HDR compatible UBD-K8500 player that guarantees four times better resolution and a colour expression 64 times higher than the traditional Blu-ray players.

Used together with the Quantum dot displays of Samsung SUHD TVs, the new UHD Blu-ray player offers an image quality never before seen on home screens. In addition, thanks to the upscaling technology it is provided with, the player reads and improves the quality of the images of traditional Blu-ray disks and DVDs.

DAY – Samsung celebrates a new concept of TV design

Samsung’s Serif TV is a product with an artisanal spirit in every respect, an encounter of passions between Samsung and internationally famed designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, which has led to the creation of a unique product in the television market that not only integrates cutting edge technology but reflects the lifestyles of consumers.

Samsung chose the Bouroullec brothers for their unique ability to emphasize aesthetics, without neglecting functionality, to create a piece of furniture that adapts perfectly to any type of environment, with a touch of original design for one-of-a-kind spaces.

Samsung Serif TV has design at its heart and is a timeless piece of furniture that fits seamlessly into the household, powered with Samsung premium television technology. It provides an elegant viewing experience that is at once versatile and exciting, thanks to an original continuous, monochromatic frame that redesigns the outline of the screen.

The shape of the TV is defined by its side profile; mirroring the silhouette of a capital I complete with typographic serif details to form a solid footing for the base, as well as creating a small shelf on the top. The use of four attachable tubular legs allows free-standing use of the set, so it can perfectly adapt to its environment.

Marco Hannappel, Sales & Marketing Director of the Audio Video Division of Samsung Electronics Italia, comments: “Our exhibition during Fuorisalone was created to showcase the design soul of our products. Samsung is constantly looking to embrace the path of technological innovation, without forgetting the fundamental role of the aesthetic. This year we wanted to realise a new concept of TV, born from the meeting between technology and design, as a trailblazer and new entertainment experience. Serif TV and the new SUHD TV line-up are both symbols of the creation of this perfect duo that is a precursor to the future of technology.”

TV design solution by Samsung

The exhibition will include a “TV design solution by Samsung” space where an architect will be made available to speak with anyone looking for advice on the planning of audio/video spaces in their own home, as well as on the Serif TV model best suited to buy, after being won over by its unique design.

Samsung Night&Day

@Superstudio Più

Via Tortona 27

Open hours for visitors

12-16 April from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Last year marked the 10th consecutive year that Samsung Electronics ranked as the leader in the global TV manufacturing industry. Yet, Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, explained that this is only the beginning—Samsung’s dedication to pioneering technology, design and the user experience will lead the TV industry in the next decade to come, too.

The past decade was one of multiple milestones for Samsung. From the release of its elegant Bordeaux TV in 2006 and the world’s first LED TV in 2009, to creating a new generation of Smart TVs in 2011 and the world’s first Curved UHD TV in 2014, Samsung has continuously raised the bar with its revolutionary products. Such innovation has been one of the primary reasons the company has maintained its position as the leading global producer of televisions for so long.

Samsung is now looking to the future, setting TV trends for the next decade with consumer-inspired innovation that redefines the home entertainment experience. “Our goal is to continue to foster the trust that our customers have in us by challenging ourselves and delivering truly different products that exceed expectations—televisions of the very highest caliber. This is Samsung. This is TV,” said Kim. “This is our strategy for the next decade, and it starts with our enhanced premium line-up of SUHD TVs with Quantum dot display.”

Harmonizing Technology and Design at the Core of New SUHD TVs

The just-released 2016 SUHD TV features the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, providing the most true-to-life picture quality and colors ever offered by Samsung. SUHD with Quantum dot display is the latest in display technology, using microscopic particles just a few atoms in diameter to create brighter, more saturated and more accurate colors compared with other display materials currently in use. With a stunning brightness exceeding 1,000 nits, these SUHD televisions offer an unparalleled level of precision and brilliance. “I believe this technology will set a new precedent in the industry,” said Kim. “These SUHD TVs are harmonized by a world-first, bezel-less curved design that keeps the viewer’s attention focused on the screen’s captivating content.”

“In 2016, we’re going beyond anything we’ve done before to offer a remarkable synergy of design, engineering and craftsmanship to make a television that looks great in any environment,” noted Kim of the premium line-up. “We’ve removed the unnecessary elements from the back of the TV to create a ‘360 design’—one that can impress from all angles, no matter where the television is positioned.”

With the 2016 SUHD TV, the representative product of the new decade, Samsung is defining what the television is now and what it will be in the future. As such, Internet of Things (IoT) hub technology has also been applied to the television, allowing the device itself to connect with over 200 SmartThings-compatible devices and act as the controller for the entire smart home. Kim said that this new feature demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to making the TV seamlessly connected to the IoT-powered home, a budding trend that is expected to grow in the near future.

“This Is TV” for the Next Decade

As television becomes a center of expansion for the IoT, its role in our everyday lives “will continue to evolve at a rapid pace,” Kim explained, as he discussed Samsung’s plans to continue leading the TV industry in the decade ahead. Some technologies that could potentially power this evolution will be highlighted in the interactive “Future TV Zone” at CES, a display of Samsung’s most forward-thinking and futuristic concept TVs. Among the devices that will be on display are Ultra Slim SUHD TVs only about a tenth-of-an-inch wide, a 170-inch SUHD TV, a transformable TV, as well as an 8K Curved SUHD TV.

“We’re confident that because of our ongoing research and ability to anticipate the needs of the different consumers with different lifestyles, Samsung will persist to grow and evolve,” said Kim. “In doing so, we will continue to push, reimagine and reinvent, to pave the way for the viewing experience of the future and deliver innovation that matters.”

Samsung Electronics, the number one TV manufacturer worldwide for the past 10 years, unveiled its spectacular new line-up of SUHD TVs at CES 2016, ushering in a new decade of global TV leadership.

“Our new SUHD TVs represent our singular focus on innovation that matters most to consumers, by providing the very best picture quality for the home,” said Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “In 2016, we’re going beyond anything we’ve done before to offer a remarkable synergy of design, engineering and craftsmanship.”

CES attendees can experience Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs and the company’s other innovative home entertainment products at booth #11906 in Central Hall.

Samsung SUHD TV with Quantum dot display: Unbeatable Picture Quality

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs feature the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, offering the most true-to-life picture quality, with stunning brightness, exceptional contrast and the most lifelike colors ever offered by Samsung.

The vast majority of Americans watch TV with light in the room (86 percent on a typical weekday, 85 percent on weekends) and only a small share say they watch in complete darkness (14 percent on weekdays and 15 percent on weekends), according to a recent consumer survey*. Samsung designed its new SUHD TVs to deliver the optimum viewing experience, regardless of the lighting environment.

This year, all of the Samsung SUHD TVs will feature the ability to provide a premium high dynamic range (HDR) experience, with 1,000 nit HDR minimum for a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. New Ultra Black technology also significantly reduces light reflection, further enhancing picture quality with minimal glare. Inspired by nature, Ultra Black absorbs natural light the same way that a moth’s eye enables it to see better at night.

360 design for Unparalleled Immersion

Four years after introducing the first Curved TVs to the world, Samsung has designed the world’s first bezel-less Curved TV, the KS9500 SUHD TV, to provide a more immersive viewing experience.

With no bezel that normally functions as the border, the viewer’s attention is focused purely on what matters most – captivating content on the screen. In keeping with this design ethos, Samsung has sought to eliminate all unnecessary elements, even removing screws from the rear of the TV, to create an elegant product that is beautiful from every angle.

Built on the Tizen operating system(OS), Samsung’s 2016 Smart TVs make it easier for consumers to discover and access all their favorite content and services, from TV and movies to games and program information, all in one place.

New Smart Hub – The 2016 Smart Hub is designed to provide users with simple access to their favorite content all in one place. Live TV, over the top (OTT), games and even the menu that appears on the home screen of the Samsung Smart TV allows users to access their favorite programs as soon as they turn on the TV.

Samsung Smart Control remote – The new Samsung Smart TV eliminates the need to juggle multiple remote controls. The Samsung Smart TV will automatically recognize the type of set-top box, game console, OTT box or home theater system that is connected to the TV. This allows users to control all of the external devices with the Smart Control remote — with no setup required.

Console-less Gaming – Consumers can enjoy the most realistic gaming experience on a large screen without the need for a console. More than 500 streaming and downloadable games will be available on the 2016 Samsung Smart TVs. Recent additions for PlayStationTMNow include Assassin’s Creed III, Batman: Arkham Origins, The LEGO Movie and many more.

EXTRA Service – With a push of the EXTRA hot button on the Samsung Smart Control remote, information related to the content will appear onscreen instantly. Users can see player profiles and stats during sporting events, information on cast members for their favorite TV shows and more.

Smart View – The Samsung Smart View mobile app allows users to share their favorite content instantly with their family. The upgraded Smart View is now available beyond Samsung Galaxy devices, supporting Android and iOS devices, as well as Window PCs. Popular apps and websites including AccuWeather, Crackle, iHeartRadio, M-GO, Plex, Pluto.TV, UFC, Vimeo, YuppTV and more are all also Smart View enabled, so consumers can begin the entertainment experience right within the apps and services they enjoy most.

More access to content – Streaming UHD movies and TV shows from providers such as Amazon, M-GO, and Netflix and accessing apps such as YouTube has gotten even easier. UHD technologies developed by NeuLion will also enable a selection of sporting events to stream UHD Consumers can also connect Samsung’s new Ultra HD Blu-ray Player via HDMI (2.0a) for access to UHD movies with HDR. Direct access to live programming from providers such as Dish and Time Warner Cable is simplified.

Samsung’s First Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Samsung also unveiled its first Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, the UBD-K8500, which is HDR compatible and offers four times the resolution and 64 times detailed color expression of a conventional Blu-ray player. It features a sleek, curved front design, and is available for pre-order now and for purchase in the U.S. in March 2016.

When paired with Samsung SUHD TV’s Quantum dot display, the new UHD Blu-ray player delivers a level of picture quality never before seen in the home. The UBD-K8500’s built-in upscaling technology enhances the picture quality from standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and consumers can also play CDs.

Samsung has partnered with Hollywood studios to ensure consumers have a selection of Ultra HD Blu-rays with astonishing HDR picture quality. This year, 20th Fox is slated to release more than 100 4K Ultra HD discs with HDR including films like The Martian, Peanuts, and among others.

*The survey was conducted online in GfK’s Omnibus from December 11-13, 2015 using the GfK KnowledgePanel®. The study consisted of a nationally representative sample of 1,020 U.S. adults, selected using random probability address-based sampling. The margin of error for this study is +/-3 percent points.

Samsung has long been the industry trendsetter in TV design and has succeeded in captivating the minds of customers over the years. Part of this success can be attributed to our philosophy of using real materials like metal, which create a sophisticated ambience yet are especially challenging to use in TV design. What also sets us apart is our ability to exceed consumers’ expectations by revealing the premium elements of metal subtly, all the while processing the material in a more elaborate manner.

An Exquisite 360 Design

When creating a new TV design, we try to picture the environment in which the product will be used, as well as the experience users will have in that environment.

The rear side of a flat screen TV usually cannot be seen because it is hidden in the back. However, with the curved design becoming a dominant trend, we thought consumers would care about the design of the rear side as well. Working closely with our R&D team and manufacturing department, we made an effort to make the rear side look more attractive. The “360 design,” a design for creating a 360-degree appeal, was born from this effort.

JS9000: Elegance from All Angles

The SUHD TV JS9000 has a bezel that wraps around the elegant curved screen, which takes cues from contemporary art and architecture. The bezel features a soft, textured “shirring” design that smoothly connects the front of the TV with the sides and the exquisite patterns on the back.

The bezel outline looks straight when seen from the front. However, taking into account that consumers check the design from all sides, we designed the bezel in a way so that the sides of the TV seamlessly meet the rear side along a restrained curve.

The metal hairline texture boasts a high level of detail, which is expressed along the edge of the TV and satisfies aesthetic elements regardless of the angle from which you see the TV set.

Maximized Value of Real Materials Through Elaborate Processing

The elegant frame of the SUHD TV JS9500, Samsung’s premium model, makes the display appear as if it’s a great painting in a museum when mounted on a wall.

We cut the bezel’s cross-section that meets the screen at a sloping angle and created a chamfer bezel design to add more depth to the TV screen. We processed the bezel joints in a highly elaborate and clean manner, thereby maximizing the premium value of real materials.

As part of the “360 design,” the “clean back design” on the rear side delivers the feel of black metal materials and creates a simple and clean ambience.

The sleek Y-shaped stand supports the SUHD TV, making the screen seem as if it is floating in space when the TV is turned on. This effect provides an even more immersive, cinematic experience for users viewing the screen. The stand is also made of exquisitely refined metal materials.

A TV for All Spaces
We designed the S9W TV in partnership with the world-renowned industrial designer Yves Béhar. Our intention was to allow the TV to be placed anywhere within a house so as to allow for better integration into one’s home environment. We wanted to change the traditional concept of a TV, and to redefine the relationship between the viewer, the television and the home.

The gradient adorned metallic cube base supports a curved, 82-inch screen with a 21:9 ratio, similar to a pedestal that supports a sculpture in a gallery. The top of the cube, which is made from stainless steel in the most recent version, opens when powered on to reveal inner lights and the television’s sound system, eliminating the need for external connectors or speakers. The base is in perfect harmony with the TV’s excellent image and sound quality, and hints at the metamorphosis of the television from a mere appliance of utility to a functional piece of art, worthy of display.

We will continue to work hard to provide true value to our loyal customers, just as we have presented various designs of the SUHD TV this year.
