The user’s enjoyment of their viewing experience is one of the key drivers in the advancement of display technologies. While many developers work simply for the ‘ideal’ picture quality, Samsung’s Neo QLED TV developers have also put in the utmost efforts to develop optimized displays for users that go above and beyond ideas of what a display can be.

In order to understand more about how those innovative features of the Neo QLED transcend technological hurdles to meet user’s growing demands for next-level quality displays, Samsung Global Newsroom sat down with the next-generation TV’s developers to find out more.

▲(From left to right) Engineers Bonggeun Lee, Kyehoon Lee, and Minhoon Lee from the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics

The Beginning of QLED: the Quantum Mini LED

The culmination of a range of leading innovations, the journey to developing the Neo QLED began with the creation of the Quantum Mini LED, a light source just 1/40th the height of conventional LEDs. Samsung’s engineers managed to reduce the size of the LED down to almost that of dust, and applied a micro layer that softly disperses light into the LED itself, allowing the chip to emit and disperse light on its own. The resulting self-emitting LED removes the noise possessed by previous technologies and enables the era of natural, smooth display presentation.

“In those TVs that utilize the typical LEDs, there is an additional lens that has to sit on top of the LED so that the light can be dispersed, so our focus for our new LED product was on allowing it to disperse light independently,” noted Engineer Minhoon Lee. “Not only is the Quantum Mini LED smaller and more space-effective than its predecessors, but it also does not require the extra lens layer, allowing us to align more LEDs together in a more compact manner.”

As the Quantum Mini LED is just 1/40th the height of previous LEDs, the engineers encountered many hurdles in the production process. There was not enough equipment available to work with these new LEDs that were of such a minute size, and the production process was inevitably intricate and tricky. “Not only is the Quantum Mini LED small, but we also needed to ascertain the accurate location of where electricity enters the LED in order to align the tens of thousands of elements around it,” said Engineer Kyehoon Lee. “This meant that expertise and advanced technologies became key. Samsung already has the know-how when it comes to developing next-generation displays, including micro LED products, so we could address this issue by applying existing Samsung processes that deal specifically with microfine elements.”

Presenting Fine Details Through Precise Control: the Quantum Matrix

Local dimming is a technology that enables better picture quality by optimizing the brightness appropriately and dimming or brightening parts of the screen that respectively need to be adjusted through distinguishing the screen backlights into multiple zones. Increasing the on-screen contrast not only provides life-like watching experiences, but it also significantly reduces the amount of electricity used. Samsung has championed local dimming technology for a long time, and has been able to improve and advance this technology through dedicated research and development efforts. As a result, the Neo QLEDs feature an evolved and optimized local dimming technology – Quantum Matrix.

However, if the lens that is used to disperse the light on top of an LED is removed and the backlights are exposed, wouldn’t this result in users being able to notice the changes in brightness and contrast happening? The engineers had already considered this, and tackled this obstacle by including even more precise adjustment into the Quantum Matrix’s processes.

Previously 10 bits, the Neo QLED features 12 bits brightness so that the light can be adjusted within a total of 4,096 levels. When the light level on-screen is not detailed enough, it can result in an impression of lag or freezing, and the light could be absorbed by nearby local blocks. However, Quantum Matrix technology is able to express a color at dozens of different levels without any glitching and presents them with no blooming. If you enjoy playing games on your TV, for example, you will be able to easily distinguish a foe in a dark cave with your own eyes.

“The range of brightness that the human eye can see is called the dynamic range,” noted Minhoon Lee. “When it comes to Quantum Matrix, the light can be adjusted within a 4,096 level range, meaning that this dynamic range has also been maximized.”

“The human eye is very sensitive, so we are helping each color to play its own role and show itself as it is instead of getting mixed up with other ones,” continued Minhoon Lee. “In addition, Quantum Matrix technology brings the extra electricity that isn’t being used in darker parts of the screen to the brighter parts so that the concentration is maximized. With this technology, we’ve achieved brightness of up to 4,000 nits1 with the Neo QLED.”

Quantum Matrix technology not only precisely controls all those Quantum Mini LEDs, but it also controls the light source for each individual content. “This technology works by analyzing the content source being played so that users can enjoy even more vivid, realistic experiences,” noted Engineer Bonggeun Lee. “For instance, if there is a scene on-screen that requires a maximized sense of dimension, the technology will provide a sense of depth by focusing the light on the object that is at the front while darkening the background. It is a completely different technology from something as simple as lights that just turn on and off.”

More Detailed AI Upscaling: the Neo Quantum Processor

When it comes to enjoying the best possible viewing experiences, content picture quality is just as important as a next-level display. In order to ensure that users can enjoy high-quality content even if the original source is of a lower resolution, and regardless of local internet speed, Samsung’s engineers developed a picture quality engine to automatically convert any content to an optimized picture quality – the advanced AI-powered Neo Quantum Processor.

The innovation key to the Neo Quantum Processor’s high performance is that its neural network has been increased from 1 to 16. This allows the processor to map different contents by their type, significantly enhancing its upscaling capability. “The Neo Quantum Processor works like this: the selected video’s attributes will be analyzed in real-time by the processor, and then the most optimized neural network out of the 16 available will be applied for the best possible upscaling result,” explained Bonggeun Lee. “This means that each one of the 16 neural networks is capable of playing a different role so that the processor can perform even more detailed upscaling.”

The processor’s method of filling the gaps between low resolution and high resolution contents has also become more precise. If the gap between the pixels is widened, then simply copying and pasting the same pixel repeatedly will make the video unclear and blurry. With the Neo Quantum Processor, the correlation is constantly analyzed through neural network learning and the change between pixels is estimated to fill in the gap between pixels in a way that is as close to reality as possible. This allows for a pattern to be analyzed in real-time and the best possible upscaling solution can be applied to the content, no matter what resolution the input video has (be it SD, HD, FHD or 4K).

The Epitome of Samsung’s Display Innovation: 2021 Neo QLED

Samsung’s TVs have been number one in the global market for 15 consecutive years. This achievement illustrates the synergy between the different innovations the company develops for each of its products, and how they work together to consistently provide the viewing experiences that users expect. The Neo QLED, a TV in a whole new league of its own, was made possible only due to the company’s existing work into developing advanced display technologies.

“Neo QLED isn’t simply a display made out of small LEDs,” highlighted Engineer Kyehoon Lee. “From including small yet effective elements to developing precise screen control, there are so many different technologies that have converged in the Neo QLED to bring beautiful display screen experiences to users. We’re very excited to see how our team’s efforts in research and development over the years have finally led to such an achievement in display technology.”

Each year, the trends within the display business change without fail. When developing the Neo QLED, all the engineers agreed that the trend they paid the most attention to was “the bigger, the better”. Out of the many factors that users consider when purchasing a TV, size is always at the top of the list. The engineers expect that the market is set to move forward with this mindset, too.

“In the past, some people felt uncomfortable with large-screen TVs, as they wouldn’t be able to so vividly see all the pixels on-screen and this lead to visual discomfort,” noted Bonggeun Lee. “However, Neo QLED is a TV that has reached the technological level that allows for satisfying viewing experiences across the board. In line with the leading trends within the TV market that prioritize ultra-large screens, we will continue to work towards realizing the perfect picture quality on a large screen.”

Samsung’s Neo QLED, which presents its contents to users as if it were actually right there in front of their eyes, has been realized with the aim of opening up a new era for displays. Following this, it won’t be too long until we can all enjoy next-level viewing experiences right in our own living rooms.

1 Maximum brightness may vary by model.

The Wall Luxury: See the Greatness from the Comfort of your Home

Samsung is introducing its luxury version of The Wall, the ground-breaking Micro LED, large-format modular display. Ideal for even the brightest areas of the luxury residential space, The Wall Luxury is configurable and customizable to a variety of sizes and ratios from 73” in 2K definition, to 292” in 8K definition. With a depth less than 30mm, the slim, bezel-less infinity design along with customizable décor frames allows the display to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, ensuring no disruption to the desired ambience of its environment.

Available globally starting July 2019, The Wall Luxury offers a new user interface and experience. Based on research into the lifestyles of target consumers and their preferences, the new luxury model goes beyond just image quality and provides a personalized user experience. A customizable décor frame enhances the display and ensures it fits any luxury space. Thanks to the 100,000-hour lifetime of its self-emitting diodes, The Wall is designed to never turn off, but to change into a digital canvas best matching the owner`s interior needs and personal mood. When the screen is not used, the Ambient Mode can display a variety of curated art from paintings, photographs and video art to customizable pictures with digital frames – that best suit the homeowner’s tastes.

The Wall Luxury is also equipped with the AI picture quality engine, Quantum Processor Flex. This delivers optimized picture quality scene-by-scene, regardless of the original source format. Quantum Processor Flex is a machine learning-based picture quality engine that analyzes millions of image data to automatically calibrate the original low resolution according to the modular screen resolution.

Whether viewing a classic movie, an anticipated sporting event or the latest console game, AI upscaling, Quantum HDR technology peak brightness of 2,000 nits and 120Hz video rate provide a rich and superior visual experience that is second-to-none. To complement the display’s visuals, Samsung has partnered with industry-leading home entertainment and automation providers. These include Harman Luxury Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf for audio solutions; Control4, Crestron and Savant for home automation solutions; and Domotz, Ihiji and OrvC for remote monitoring capabilities.

“Throughout the last twelve months, we’ve closely monitored interior design and technology trends to shape the product planning and development of The Wall Luxury,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We set out to create a product unlike anything else – matching the lifestyle and taste of those looking for the most exclusive and premium visual experiences in their homes.”

MagicINFO 7 with AI-Based Analytics: Turning Signage into Insights

New 2019 Flip 65’’: Digital Flipchart for Enhanced Collaboration

Expanding on the success of the 55” model, the new Flip 65” is the latest addition to Samsung’s portfolio of digital flipcharts, offering greater collaboration capabilities in an easy to navigate display. First unveiled at InfoComm 2019 and available globally from July, the 65” model provides a host of new features and is the world’s fastest interactive touch display – allowing teams to work smarter, faster and more efficiently.

The bigger 65-inch screen expands the usability of the display and is an ideal solution for large meeting rooms and classroom requiring a larger display. For this model, Samsung has introduced the No Gap Wall Mount, removing any unnecessary space between the product and the wall, meaning it is aesthetically appealing no matter the angle.

Samsung is now offering an advanced digital experience, truly making the move from analog to digital. Note Layer and Merge to Roll features create a completely interactive whiteboard, while Brush mode recognizes a wide range of pen thicknesses, ensuring users can produce the images they are looking for at just the stroke of a brush with the same smooth feel as a real paintbrush. Water and oil painting modes allow different styles and textures, while color mixing capabilities let users access a full, vibrant color palette. Finally, advanced technical capabilities such as connection to the cloud and popular cloud collaboration tools including Office365, OneDrive and Remote Desktop1 as well as remote management allow users to take collaboration beyond the Flip and empower employees across multiple locations.

Also announced at InfoComm 2019, Samsung and Cisco have unveiled the next phase of their strategic partnership to improve modern workplace collaboration. By integrating Samsung’s superior 4K UHD SMART signage QMR Series with the Cisco Webex Room Kit Mini, groups and teams that are spread out across different locations can communicate over video and encounter a high-quality experience. The combination also provides a plug and play experience that is designed and optimized for smaller huddle spaces of three to six people, a true “Huddle in a box” solution. Additionally, Samsung’s new Flip 65” is the first interactive display that will be incorporated into Cisco’s upgraded version of the Webex Room Kit Series that is scheduled for release later this year. The combination will enable Webex co-creation on Samsung Flip 65” and expand from in-room ideation to two-way whiteboarding for teams located anywhere across the globe.

“The partnership between global leaders Cisco and Samsung will transform the workplace,” says Sri Srinivasan, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Webex Devices at Cisco. “Samsung’s visual display technology is second to none., Integrating these displays with Cisco’s Webex Room Kit Series will change the meeting room experience for distributed teams, whether they are gathering in huddle spaces or co-creating.”

“Collaboration is at the heart of any great business and our partnership with Cisco, the leader in telepresence and networking technology, will allow us to transform workspaces,” said Hyesung Ha, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We look forward to working with Cisco to continually innovate the way businesses collaborate.”

Samsung Electronics will transform the global digital signage market by launching the first signage products featuring the unmatched picture quality of QLED 8K at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2019 in Amsterdam. The new visual display quality is expected to drastically impact the commercial digital signage industry, unlocking new and exciting opportunities. In addition to the QLED 8K Signage, ISE 2019 attendees will experience the future of display signage including The Wall 2019 and Multi-Link LED HDR technology for signage.

“By introducing 8K in display signage, businesses can deliver impeccable picture quality to their audiences in a way that was previously not possible,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The 82” QLED 8K Signage is just one of the many industry-leading products we are excited to showcase at ISE 2019. We look forward to introducing the global AV industry to the commercial applications of 8K.”

QLED 8K Signage: Market’s Highest Resolution with AI Upscaling

Samsung will present the new 82” QLED 8K Signage, which combines the market’s highest resolution with Artificial Intelligence (AI) upscaling technology — producing lifelike images, enabling users to enjoy immersive viewing experiences. The AI upscaling technology in commercial displays will capture the attention of potential customers; and to store owners and advertisers, this means more content production at lower costs and lower resolution but higher resolution display in 8K quality.

The new signage’s slim design, at less than 40mm deep, provides hassle-free installation by adopting Samsung’s advanced optical technology and blends into any environment in portrait or landscape mode. With a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, individual pixels in an image become imperceptible to the human eye.

Similar to its 8K TV counterpart, the QLED 8K display delivers enhanced black color presentation through local dimming and Quantum Light Control. The display also features HDR10+ along with 4,000nit peak brightness and provides 100 percent Color Volume, presenting rich pictures.

292″ The Wall in 8K: Set to Launch in the First Half of 2019

Samsung will launch a 292” version of The Wall display in 8K globally in the first half of this year. The Wall is a large-format modular display ideal for luxury residences as well as for business purpose, configurable and customizable to a variety of sizes and ratios from 73” to 292”.

The Wall’s slim, bezel-less infinity design allows the display to blend subtly into its surroundings. The Ambient Mode allows customization of the display by showcasing diverse content such as photos and art and matching the background to complement its surroundings. A customizable décor frame also allows the display look, sleek and sophisticated from every angle to fit any luxury space.

To compliment the display’s visuals, Samsung works with industry-leading partners, including Harman Luxury Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf for sound solutions, Control4, Crestron and Savant for home automation solutions, and Domotz, Ihiji and OrvC on remote monitoring capabilities for channel partners.

Multi-Link LED HDR: Industry’s First 8K HDR for LED Signage

Samsung will introduce Multi-Link LED HDR, the industry’s first 8K LED HDR technology. Using Samsung’s proprietary algorithm and scene analysis, Multi-Link LED HDR turns any content into HDR quality, without special meta-data.

Multi-Link LED HDR for signage delivers unparalleled image quality, featuring Inverse Tone Mapping (ITM) and Dynamic Peaking to maximize brightness and contrast ratio of the full screen by doubling peak luminance. Color Mapping feature also sets an adaptive color gamut for true and vivid LED colors.

Moreover, Multi-Link LED HDR delivers live content with lower latency through an optimal live mode. It helps eliminate cable clutter of other displays with a 100-meter (330 foot) LAN1 cable.

With the Multi 8K Frame Lock function embedded in Multi-Link LED, integrators do not require a separate device to sync content presented on 8K displays. Multi-Link LED HDR supports all Samsung SMART LED Signage products and is also compatible with The Wall Professional and the IFJ Series.

OMN/OMN-D Series: Bringing Semi-outdoor Signage to the World

Samsung will launch its semi-outdoor OMN/OMN-D series globally this year. These in-window displays available in both 46” and 55” sizes give businesses an eye-catching display solution with vivid and crisp content and excellent visibility, even in direct sunlight, with 4,000nit brightness and high contrast ratio of 5,000:1 all packed in a slim and neat design.

The OMN-D series is a double-sided display that allows store-front and indoor display, increasing sales opportunities both in and out of the store simultaneously. With WiFi embedded and using one electric power cord and one LAN cable, the series reduces cord clutter and increases energy efficiency.

Both displays feature dust-proof IP5X-validation and three-step overheat protection for durable performance, along with their own embedded solution, MagicINFO S6 powered by Tizen 4.0 for streamlined content management. The displays are optimized for a wide range of retail businesses from quick-service restaurants to department stores and more.

“We are proud to partner with Samsung in implementing the disruptive technology for semi-outdoor windows OMN. Thanks to over fifteen thousand digital windows installed in its stores and customers’ shops, today Luxottica is one of the largest private digital broadcasters globally. This new solution represents a step forward in the way our group engages with millions of consumers around the world,” said Mr. Carlo Panigati, Indirect Procurement Director at Luxottica, a leader in the design, manufacture, distribution and sale of fashion, luxury and sports eyewear based in Italy. Luxottica will begin using the OMN-series display in its stores across Europe, beginning in Italy.

At ISE, Samsung will also be introducing the new QMR and QBR series 4K displays that feature five models – 43’’ to 75” in size, an intelligent upscaling engine and IPX5 dust-proof validation, embedded with KNOX security solution and Wi-Fi for wireless management. Created with shopping malls, retail stores and airports in mind, QMR series has 500nit brightness and a non-glare panel. Made for smaller shops, commuter stations and terminals, QBR has 350nit brightness. Both series are upgraded from the last with smaller bezels and a more symmetric design.

The Wall 2019 represents a new era in display innovation: a 219-inch modular Micro LED screen that can be tailored to consumers’ homes and lifestyles. At the center of this stunning display technology are more than 100 Product Planners, UX Designers and Marketers from Samsung’s Visual Display Enterprise Business Team, working together to bring The Wall into homes in 2019. The Newsroom sat down with six individuals from Samsung to learn more about how they created The Wall 2019.

From Left: Hyunkyung Lee, Yoojin Choi, Sangun Yoon, Tara Wang, Sungwan Koo, Heejin Ko

Bringing The Wall into the Home

Since its launch in June 2018, the commercial industry version, The Wall Professional, has been providing viewers with exceptional immersive experiences, situated in large buildings and hotels. Yet ensuring that consumers can enjoy this superior picture quality in the comfort of their own homes presented its own unique challenges.

The team behind The Wall 2019 began by conducting research into popular interior décor trends around the world. “We learnt about the lifestyles of our target consumers and their preferences around the home by looking at images online,” explained UX designer, Heejin Ko.

“We spoke with premium screen installation businesses and held several workshops with them throughout the year to better understand their customers,” said Product Planner, Sangun Yoon. “We aligned our direction with the insights gained from these workshops.”

UX Designer, Yoojin Choi, believes this engagement with the target audience brings something unique to The Wall 2019: “I’m pleased that we were able to listen to our consumers, learn about their lifestyles and incorporate their preferences into the design.”

As the development process gained momentum, the response from consumers was positive. “Our consumers are attracted to the bespoke viewing experience,” said Sungwan Koo, a Product Planner. “Their feedback also helped us to shape the product.”

At IFA 2018, Samsung Electronics unveiled the QLED 8K television, its most immersive and dynamic screen yet. Now available across all international markets, critics and users alike have singled out the QLED 8K for its truly immersive picture, sound and AI capabilities.

But what sets the QLED 8K apart from other 8K televisions and earns it its mesmerizing picture credentials is its ‘8K AI Upscaling’ feature, which harnesses machine learning to transform lower quality image contents into vivid 8K resolution. Not only can you watch content developed in 8K on the QLED’s 3-million-pixel screen, but with the 8K AI Upscaling feature, you can also watch your favorite videos from any resolution – from SD to 4K – transformed to as close to-8K quality as is possible, depending on the source.

Vivid Detail, Breathtaking Results

4K video (left) and 8K upscaled video (right): the 8K image appears more realistically rendered compared to the 4K one thanks to the enhanced detail of the objects depicted.

8K AI Upscaling is a technology that allows viewers to enjoy their favorite videos originally presented in SD, FHD and UHD in 8K (7,680X4,320) super high-quality resolution. On other higher definition screens, playing a low-definition video results in pixelation, image blurring and an overall unsatisfying viewing experience. In order to illuminate the difference 8K AI Upscaling can make, a 75-inch QLED 8K (Q900R) has been compared with a 75-inch QLED 4K TV (Q9F) to demonstrate how content played on the QLED 8K TV and transformed intelligently through 8K AI Upscaling appears in near-8K resolution quality – even if its source is 4K or below.

8K AI Upscaling results in more detailed and natural videos as it upscales not just one aspect, but a whole variety of features such as light, color and line differentiation. As Hyun-seung Lee, QLED 8K TV Picture Quality Developer notes, this means that the resulting images are ”closer to the original” – just as the creators intended. The realism offered by 8K AI Upscaling really does make all the difference in rendering images as if they were really in front of you. Looking at the image above, in the 8K version you can see that the colors of the weeds in the foreground appear more multi-dimensional; the upscaled texture renders each nook and cranny of the mountainside and differentiates it from the coarser textures of the billowing weeds below; and each and every onscreen detail is brought out so that upon viewing, you are really put into this pastoral scene.

Outstanding Realism

Just as the human eye takes in what is in front of it with no obfuscation and object depth differentiation, so the 8K QLED delivers scenes in detailed clarity thanks to the intelligent reactivity of 8K AI Upscaling (as compared with the FHD quality image on the 4K QLED TV [left])

Reflecting the way human object perception registers objects that are closer to us in more detail, 8K AI Upscaling carefully adjusts content to give ultimate image depth thanks to the advanced resolution process engine. Looking at the above images comparing an FHD-resolution image on the left 4K QLED TV with an 8K-upscaled one on the right QLED 8K, the 8K upscaling presents the flowers in the foreground in minute detail – appearing to viewers as if they were close enough to touch. Similarly, camera pans and sweeps across an environment on-screen are optimized to replicate the way human eyes react to changing stimulus – removing any blur from the video. The effortless pixel-less rendering of the images also contributes to an immersive viewing experience, and the peak 4,000 nit brightness of the QLED 8K accurately expresses images in all light conditions – as they are intended to be seen.

Sharper Text, Improved Legibility

HD video (left) and upscaled 8K video (right): Clearer letter outlines are noticeable in the upscaled image

When playing a low-definition video on a high-definition screen, line ‘noises’ (transmission disturbance that blurs details and caused unwanted digital static) are the most disruptive impediments to a satisfying viewing experience. As the input images have lower quality, letter outlines on captions and subtitles become more blurred. However, 8K AI Upscaling intelligently streamlines thick and rough outlines so that they are as sharp as possible, delivering clearer letters on the screen worthy of a high definition television experience. This aspect of the upscaling is crucial to viewers, as the improved legibility of text, demonstrated in the above images, decreases eye strain. As Lee notes, “Recently, almost all videos and TV programs such as entertainment, news, YouTube videos and movies feature subtitles. Consumers can really notice the difference on-screen with 8K AI Upscaling.”

Deeper Blacks for Total Immersion

4K video (left) and upscaled 8K video (right): More detailed contrasts highlight the details of objects in the black background

With 8K AI Upscaling, denser contrast expression means that object details inside of a black background become more pronounced compared to in their original source resolution, heightening a realistic viewing experience. In order to counteract any light spreading across dark-hued content, a common problem in lower-resolution videos, the Upscaling’s intelligent algorithms analyze black video patterns in order to transmit the perfect black; the quality of this deep black is on a par with content originally produced in 8K resolution. The difference between the two images pre and post upscaling is truly noticeable; such is the power of 8K AI Upscaling technology.

Behind the Scenes: Intelligent Upscaling that Keeps Learning

8K AI Upscaling intelligently analyzes not only 4K but also SD, HD, FHD and any other video resolutions in real-time and any necessary features are supplemented. Textures are restored with delicate detail offsetting, any visual static is automatically eliminated by video stream compression, low-definition edges are sharpened to avoid blurriness, and any discontinuous lines are restored. The key element to this is machine learning. Thanks to the QLED 8K’s inbuilt ‘Quantum Processor 8K’ technology, the intelligent algorithm learns from the differences found and makes note of the correlation between low-definition and high-definition content.

”The Quantum Processor at the heart of 8K AI Upscaling technology sets its own standards for optimized upscaling, instigating such intelligent features as ‘lines must be thin’ and ‘thick and rough areas must be more vivid’,” explains Lee.

Hyun-seung Lee notes that in developing the QLED 8K and its 8K AI Upscaling technology, “we focused on realizing display quality that is closer to original sources”

8K AI Upscaling is based on artificial intelligence smart learning, so through usage, it will develop and adapt with each video upscale as more video data becomes available to the system to be analyzed. But even from the first usage, the QLED 8K provides the most comfortable color, light and texture balances to provide the optimum viewing experience for each user. “8K AI Upscaling opened the development possibilities of not just improving resolution and achieving better image quality, but also in the area of human taste, which is difficult to emulate,” notes Lee on the dynamic changes the QLED 8K’s 8K AI Upscaling feature provides for viewers.

Samsung Electronics has been behind many world firsts when it comes to TV technologies, including the world’s slimmest LED TV, the first FHD 3D TV, the largest UHD TV, and the first curved TV. At IFA 2018 in Berlin, the company unveiled another industry-first innovation with QLED 8K—the first 8K QLED TV.

To learn more about how the company’s latest groundbreaking TV mesmerizes viewers with virtually perfect picture quality and sound, Samsung Newsroom sat down with members of the team behind it, including product planners Beomkyun Rha and Jonghyuk Kim, and developers Hyunseung Lee and Sunghwan Jang.

(From left) Hyunseung Lee, Jonghyuk Kim, Beomkyun Rha and Sunghwan Jang, of Samsung’s Visual Display division.

Fostering a Viewing Experience Like Nothing Seen Before

QLED 8K boasts a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels—16 times more than a full HD (FHD) TV, and four times higher than 4K UHD display. As developer Hyunseung Lee explained, the TV’s added resolution allows detailed in images to be expressed more clearly, and creates a sense of reality and depth that keeps you immersed in your content.

“With conventional SD (standard definition) or HD (high definition) displays, when people look closely at depicted images, they can recognize them as a cluster of pixels,” said Lee. “However, with QLED 8K, the level of resolution is so high that pixels become invisible to the human eye, and viewers become incapable of distinguishing depicted objects from the real thing.”

As fellow developer Sunghwan Jang noted, however, it’s not just QLED 8K’s sky-high resolution that enables it to provide such textured, realistic images. The TV’s exceptional peak brightness—up to 4,000 nits—allows it to illuminate small details with impeccable precision.

“Bright content is expressed differently in 8K resolution,” said Jang. “Because 8K features four times more pixels than 4K, images and videos that are brighter and include more detail can be presented more accurately in 8K.”

Taking Immersion to Another Level with AI

Samsung is the first manufacturer to implement artficial intelligence (AI) technology into a QLED TV. Adding machine learning to the TV’s repertoire of immersion-enhancing features has made it easy for users to enjoy a wide range of content in crystal clear 8K.

Samsung’s exclusive machine-learning technology automatically upscales lower-resolution videos into 8K picture quality, regardless of the video’s native resolution or method of transmission. The technology is powered by the Quantum Processor 8K, which, according to product planner BeomKyun Rha, was enhanced to better process details and lighting.

As Lee explained, the difference that the upscaling technology makes is often as clear as black and white. “When you look at 4K content next to upscaled 8K video, black areas of the screen are where you can see a major difference, even under bright conditions.”

The difference is also especially noticeable when viewing scenes with lots of detail and contrast. When viewing a nature documentary, for example, QLED 8K ensures sharp, natural colors that depict both the beaming yellow sun and the emerald waves beneath it with vivid accuracy.

Dealing with Challenges

When developing QLED 8K, Samsung’s R&D team was encouraged by the 8K market’s rapid development, but found it difficult to agree upon how to improve on QLED TV’s specifications, given the TV’s status as the cornerstone of the company’s display offerings.

“The most difficult thing to do was to coordinate the opinions of all the related divisions,” explained Jang (pictured above). “For example, the goal was to achieve 4,000-nit brightness. Conventional 4K TVs feature an optimum brightness of 1,500 to 2,000-nits, so raising that figure to 4,000 presented a challenge.”

Because the market had never seen TVs that satisfied the 4,000-nit specification, the team set out to raise the bar by achieving that value. “We wanted to produce the world’s best TV,” said product planner Jonghyuk Kim. “A TV that would allow content to be depicted as faithfully to creators’ intention as possible.

Delivering on that brightness goal presented a number of difficulties, and the team sought the opinions of a various divisions to help address them. “Once the discussions were done, [we] tirelessly researched every detail, such as how to adjust the amount of light to find an optimal balance of performance and durability,” Kim (pictured above) continued. “We worked very hard to figure out just the right amount. If it was too little, the light would be insufficient, but if it was too much, it would impact the product’s durability.”

Looking Ahead

Of course, Samsung’s R&D team overcame the challenges it faced during QLED 8K’s development, eventually delivering a TV with the power to redefine standards for visual immersion. The team isn’t resting on its laurels, however, as there’s still more work to be done.

Currently, Samsung’s 8K AI Upscaling technology is capable of enhancing content with better picture quality and sound, but the goal is to enable the AI to analyze users’ viewing conditions and environments in order to provide a more optimized, personalized experience. This will eventually allow the technology to offer any viewer an optimal and immersive viewing experience.

“We want our consumers to be able to immerse themselves in their favorite content, and view photos and videos from their everyday lives at a level of detail that allows them to feel like they’re present in the moment or scene,” said Rha. “We consider it our duty at Samsung to create new, innovative products like QLED 8K, that can help consumers realize such experiences.”
