Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today introduced the first open-source software solution, the Scalable Memory Development Kit (SMDK), that has been specially designed to support the Compute Express Link (CXL) memory platform. In May, Samsung unveiled the industry’s first CXL memory expander that allows memory capacity and bandwidth to scale to levels far exceeding what is possible in today’s server systems. Now, the company’s CXL platform is being extended beyond hardware to offer easy-to-integrate software tools, making CXL memory much more accessible to data center system developers for emerging artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and 5G-edge markets.

The CXL interconnect is an open, industry-backed standard that enables different types of devices such as accelerators, memory expanders and smart I/O devices to work more efficiently when processing high-performance computational workloads.

“In order for data center and enterprise systems to smoothly run next-generation memory solutions like CXL, development of corresponding software is a necessity,” said Cheolmin Park, Vice President of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics. “Today, Samsung is reinforcing its commitment toward delivering a total memory solution that encompasses hardware and software, so that IT OEMs can incorporate new technologies into their systems much more effectively.”

CXL Memory Adoption Made Easier Without the Need for Application Modifications

Samsung’s SMDK enables the main memory and the CXL memory expander to work together seamlessly in heterogeneous memory systems. The extensive software kit consists of libraries — sets of pre-built, reusable codes — and application programming interfaces (APIs) — the connections to access these software codes. Using the SMDK, system developers can easily incorporate CXL memory into advanced IT systems without having to modify existing application environments, or alternatively use it to optimize application software settings to suit special system needs.

Industry’s First Software-Defined Memory Management

The new SMDK also supports memory virtualization, allowing system designers to efficiently manage an expanded memory pool in shared memory architectures. Leveraging a proprietary Intelligent Tiering Engine, the SMDK can identify and configure the memory type, capacity and bandwidth that are most appropriate for each use case.

Samsung’s SMDK is now available on a limited basis for initial testing and optimization and will be open-sourced within the first half of next year. Samsung will continue to enhance its open-source SMDK as it closely collaborates with industry leaders in expanding adoption of the CXL memory platform for broad use in AI, edge and cloud applications.

Mr. Suresh Chitturi, Director for Standards at the Samsung Research Institute in Bangalore, was recently elected as new Chairman of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Service and System Aspect 6 (SA6) Working Group by acclamation in Sophia Antipolis, France.

The 3GPP is a collaborative project aimed at developing global standards for acceptable specifications of telecommunications networks. The project is comprised of three Technical Specification Groups (TSGs), under which 16 Working Groups oversee specifications for each sector. In addition to Mr. Chitturi, new Chairman of SA6, other Samsung officials currently serving in elected roles on the 3GPP include one TSG Chairman, two Chairman of Working Groups, and two Vice-Chairman. For his part, Mr. Chitturi will lead the SA6 Working Group for the next two years.

For its part, the SA6 is a key working group responsible for the development of application layer standards. Since its inception in 2014, SA6 has played a significant role in the development of Mission Critical Applications Standards across Long-Term Evolution (LTE), a global standard widely adopted by public safety agencies and other critical communication industry verticals. The Standards enable the use of push-to-talk voice, video and data communications for public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) operations over broadband networks.

“Providing leadership to 3GPP SA6 Working Group, especially in this era of new mobile communications, is a unique opportunity. We at Samsung value the importance of the activity of 3GPP and SA6 in creating a robust platform for future 5G services, leading up to the era of 5G commercialization,” said Mr. Chitturi.

Mr. Chitturi currently serves as the Director for Standards at the Samsung Research Institute in Bangalore, India.

While there is a significant industry effort to develop the new 5G standard, which is scheduled to be ready by June this year, the focus on 5G services will be far more critical to the applications of 5G technology. Mission Critical Application Standards, which apply to the essential systems critical to the survival of a business or organization, will remain a key responsibility of SA6 Working Group particularly in the move towards diverse applications of 5G. For instance, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X), smart factories, as well as 5G service application programming interface (API) frameworks will allow 3rd party verticals to leverage the rich capabilities of the 5G core network and new radio.

Prior to being elected Chairman, Mr. Chitturi served as Vice-Chairman of SA6 Working Group, providing key contribution to the timely completion of Mission Critical Standards to meet the needs of the Critical Communications industry. Mr. Chitturi also represents Samsung on the Governing Council of TSDSI, the India Telecom Standards Development Organization (SDO), and has previously held leadership positions in several other SDOs such as World Wide Web (W3C), Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), Java Community Process (JCP), and the GSM Association (GSMA).

In addition to the appointment of Mr. Chitturi, Mr. Aris Papasakellariou, Senior Director of Standards at Samsung Research America, received the 2017 3GPP Excellence Award earlier this month for his outstanding contributions in the field of radio access technology for 5G.

Samsung Electronics has embraced the Vulkan API for its mobile-based gaming, bringing more robust and responsive performance and power efficiency to gaming on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. During the this year’s E3 gameshow, with the demonstration of three cutting-edge games based on the Vulkan API, the benefits this API brings to the gaming experience are now clear for all to see.

With this video, you can see for yourself the increased possibilities Vulkan brings to the gaming world. In EA’s Need for Speed: No Limits, Nexon’s Heroes of Incredible Tales (HIT), and Super Evil Megacorp’s Vainglory, each game is noticeably more detailed and responsive, so gamers can enjoy them all at a deeper level.

OpenGL has been an important standard in the industry for more than 25 years. But changes in technology—in particular the rising power of GPUs—have created the need for a new API with more flexibility and portability, which led to the release of Vulkan 1.0 in February. With simpler drivers, Vulkan reduces CPU bottlenecks, allows the use of multiple CPUs for increased performance, and reduces hitches and other surprises.

Compared to OpenGL ES, the Vulkan API increases GPU performance while lowering CPU load. The result is more detailed graphics and more responsive gaming, making games more immersive and engaging for users.

In order to making gaming on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge as exciting and engaging as possible, Samsung has worked actively with its partners, helping them understand the smartphones and Vulkan API.

“Samsung has been a great partner for us in importing our games to Vulkan,” said Tommy Krul, Chief Technology Officer at Super Evil Megacorp. “We actually had engineers from Samsung right here in our office helping us port Vainglory to Vulkan and really squeeze out all the performance we can.”

Together with Samsung and the Vulkan API, Super Evil Megacorp was able to create games with 30 percent faster performance, increased rendering of images on the screen and improved battery life.

“Microsecond fidelity on our devices is essential, because we need players to be able to perform at their max capacity,” said Stephan Sherman, Chief Creative Officer at Super Evil Megacorp. “It’s essential that they have a device that is going to be able to keep up with them. Vulkan and Samsung devices are built for performance. They’re built for lightning fast, blinding speed, that perfect alacrity between touch and action.”

And to take that relationship to the next level, this year Super Evil Megacorp teamed up with Samsung at the E3 to present the Samsung Galaxy Vainglory Invitational tournament Four of the best competitive Vainglory teams from around the world competed in front of a live audience in the 2-day competition. The matches between Team Solomid from USA, G2 esports from Germany, Hunters from China and Invincible Armada from Korea were very intense. In the end, Invincible Armada took home the victory, with Team Solomid coming in at second place.

In addition to the many advantages of using the Vulkan API, Samsung has a wide range of technologies and approaches it is using to further improve the gaming experience for users. The company has introduced several useful features such as the Game Launcher and Game Tools with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and it provided the Galaxy Game Pack, a package of more than 40 games and special bonuses that are available only for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge users through Galaxy Apps. With Game Pack, it is easier than ever to experience all the fun and immersive excitement of many of the best games.

Samsung Electronics America, today introduced the Samsung Communication Manager Compact (SCM Compact), an ‘all-in-one’ IP communications solution that provides small and medium businesses (SMB) with a simple, cost-effective way to gain powerful, enterprise-class collaboration capabilities for today’s increasingly mobile workforce. With support for up to 512 users, the SCM Compact comes with features SMBs rely on for advanced communications—including cost-effective security, an embedded API server and seamless mobility technology.

“Small and medium-sized businesses are evolving their infrastructure to gain the sophisticated collaboration technologies that have typically only been available to their larger competitors,” said John D’Annunzio, General Manager of Samsung Wireless Enterprise. “The SCM Compact was built specifically with SMB owners in mind, providing a mobile communications platform that prioritizes ease-of-use, security and cost-savings.”

Enabling Seamless, Next-Gen Mobility

The SCM Compact drives greater efficiency and productivity through Samsung’s innovative mobile technology that eliminates the boundaries between wired, Wi-Fi and cellular networks, helping employees stay connected to business communications while in the office or on the go.

With the included Smart Handover feature, the SCM Compact can seamlessly handover smartphone calls from cellular networks to a business’ internal Wi-Fi network (and vice versa) without any call disruption. Samsung’s unique technology uses the voice path of a Wi-Fi network instead of the more commonly-used data path, improving voice quality and reducing costs for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) workers.

Additionally, when paired with Samsung’s WeVoIP mobile application, the SCM Compact enables workers to turn their smartphone into a fully-enabled business phone that uses their business extension line and maintains key deskphone functions, including conferencing, call transfer and call recording. Workers can also seamlessly move a call from a Samsung desk phone to a wireless device (and vice versa) with the push of a button.

Embedded Essentials for SMBs

With 66 percent of SMBs planning to adopt or upgrade to a collaboration platform [1] , more SMBs require an IP communications solution with cost-effective scalability and essential collaboration functions. The SCM Compact achieves this through an open Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) platform that works with existing systems for a more efficient approach—and embeds capabilities generally not built into most SMB solutions. Key embedded capabilities include:

Built-in Session Border Controller (SBC) for Security: Mobile device security is one of the top challenges facing small businesses [2] , according to AMI Partners Research. [] The SCM Compact’s integrated SBC delivers secure SIP communications—keeping IP addresses private and protecting networks from DDoS attacks—while eliminating the need for remote workers to dial into their network through a VPN.

Embedded API Server for Custom Apps: With support for numerous third party APIs, SMBs can quickly deploy and integrate a variety of business applications, such as trading systems, databases or Customer Relationship Management (CRM), without purchasing an external link server. This provides a more cost-effective, faster application development process.

Survivable Branch Gateway for 24/7 Operations: If IP connections are lost between a data center and remote offices due to network failure, the SCM Compact sustains SIP communications for continuous routing of local gateway traffic, along with survivable high-quality voice and telephony functionality. Also, businesses can hot swap option cards without system shutdowns.

“When looking to upgrade or install new platforms, many SMBs want the sophisticated applications or mobile functionalities used by their larger competitors,” said Steve Sava, president of Perigee Business Technologies, a certified Samsung business partner. “The Samsung Communications Manager Compact gives us the option to offer industry-standard SIP solutions that not only offer the eye-appeal that customers look for, but also deliver the advanced functionality of a mobility-enabled platform.”

The SCM Compact is available through Samsung’s authorized partners. To learn more about the product and where to purchase it, visit here.
