Since the Paralympic flame was lit on August 28, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games have been shining an incredible spotlight on how the Paralympic Movement’s core values of determination, equality, inspiration and courage can move the world forward.

Aligned with this vision, Samsung Electronics provided nearly 5,000 Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition smartphones to all athletes participating in the Paralympic Games to further enrich the unforgettable experience of a “Games Wide Open.” The new device is packed with a full suite of useful pre-loaded apps and is enhanced with Galaxy AI and accessibility features that demonstrate Samsung’s belief in the power of technology to create a more inclusive world.

During the Paralympic Games, Samsung invited athletes to the Olympic rendezvous @ Samsung | Village Plaza pop-up experience to show them the latest Galaxy AI and accessibility features – and how the features can open and enhance their Games-time experience, as well as their daily lives, like never before.

▲ Paralympians Paris 2024 and teammates gather for a bespoke workshop at the Olympic rendezvous @ Samsung | Village Plaza.

More Open Communication With Interpreter

Athletes had the chance to test out Interpreter, which breaks down language barriers through real-time translations powered by Galaxy AI. A key feature when traveling or, in this case, meeting and engaging with fellow athletes from around the world, Interpreter has been helping everyone at Paris 2024 communicate with ease.

After attending a workshop with Samsung’s product specialists, Wesley Kimeli Sang (Para Athletics, Kenya) contemplated how Interpreter would allow him to better connect with other athletes during his time in Paris and beyond. “Interpreter can help us in many ways because sometimes we cannot communicate with other athletes. For example, some speak Arabic and others speak French,” Kimeli Sang said. “But this is very good for communication because we can speak fluently in our own language, and they can understand in their native languages.”

▲ Para athlete Wesley Kimeli Sang, Team Kenya, explores the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition’s Interpreter during a live demonstration.

▲ Para athlete Wesley Kimeli Sang, Team Kenya, uses the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition’s Interpreter for English to French translation with a Samsung product specialist.

▲ Members of Team Colombia discover the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition’s Interpreter.

A New Perspective With Bixby Vision for Accessibility

Athletes also learned more about Bixby Vision for accessibility, which helps visually impaired users experience the world around them by verbally describing what it sees. The feature has several accessibility subfeatures including Scene Describer, which describes captured or downloaded images and Object Identifier, which detects and identifies specific objects right in front of users. Text Reader, meanwhile, recognizes and reads out text. Color Detector, another subfeature, identifies and reads out colors present in users’ surrounding areas.

One athlete Bixby Vision impressed in particular was Kada Boualia (Goalball, France). Goalball is a team sport designed for the visually impaired, and Boualia knows firsthand how significant Bixby Vision’s functions are. “It’s going to be an incredible help for people with low vision because it will describe the environment,” Boualia said. “We used to have to go through an online app but it’s great that this phone already has this feature on it.”

▲ Goalball player Kada Boualia, Team France, tries out the Galaxy Z Flip6’s Bixby Vision at the Olympic rendezvous @ Samsung | Village Plaza.

“The accessibility world is adapting, and it is getting easier for individuals with visual impairments,” said Evan Molloy (Para Judo, Great Britain). “For people with visual impairments, to be able to use devices and not having to ask people to read things is really important.”

Epic Moments, Shared With Galaxy

At the Olympic rendezvous @ Samsung | Village Plaza, athletes used the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition’s Flex Mode to capture special moments and share them with their friends and teammates. The Paralympians tried out various photography methods such as ‘Show Palm’ or voice commands to capture selfies more conveniently and share them with friends to make Paris 2024 an unforgettable experience.

When Team Samsung Galaxy’s Desirée Vila (Para Athletics, Spain) came to visit the Olympic rendezvous @ Samsung | Village Plaza, she was keen to try out new and efficient ways of capturing and sharing photos with friends at the Selfie Zone. “Especially for group pictures, I’m always the one using the phone or setting the timer and I’m not very fast with these prosthetics,” Vila said. “So for me, it’s really convenient to be able to just stay put without having to run and take the picture.”

▲ Para athlete and Team Samsung Galaxy member Desirée Vila of Team Spain poses using the Galaxy Z Flip6’s ‘Show Palm’ command to capture a photo to share with friends and family.

A Tour of Paris With Galaxy AI

In other demonstrations, athletes used Galaxy AI’s Circle to Search and Browsing Assist features to uncover hidden gems in Paris and make the most of their time in the host city. Also supporting them were key accessibility features such as Magnification, which enhances readability for those with low vision through screen zoom.

During his visit to the Olympic rendezvous @ Samsung | Village Plaza, Martin Clobert (Paralympic Marathon, Belgium) highlighted how accessibility features can support daily life for individuals with visual impairments. “I think for me, as I am visually impaired, technology is important. I can’t see small details, so using Magnification makes reading, or posting something on social media easier,” Clobert explained.

When innovative technology meets great design, our lives can become more convenient. Samsung Newsroom spoke with inspiring people who use Samsung products and features to unlock new possibilities and enhance their lives.

Exploring the World Together

It is only natural for parents to want to share special moments together with their children, especially as they grow curious about the world and find joy in discovering new things. For parents with visual impairments, exploring the world with children requires a different approach.

“This is an apple, and this is a puppy.”

Children often point at objects they don’t know as they grow up and learn about their surroundings. With Bixby Vision for accessibility, parents with visual impairments can find out what their children are curious about as the device narrates for them. Even if parents aren’t able to see what’s in front of them, they can experience the world with their children through sound.

[Bixby Vision for Accessibility]

With an easy setup and simple interface, Bixby Vision vocally describes what it sees, helping people make sense of the world around them. Bixby Vision supports scene describer,1 object identifier,2 text reader and color detector.

* On smartphones and tablets: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken assistance → Bixby Vision for accessibility
** Service availability and content providers may vary by country, device, OS and One UI version.

Enjoying the World Together

Everyone is different — even members of the same family. For CODA3 families, hearing children converse with their parents who are deaf through sign language. As children grow up, parents want to learn more about what their children are experiencing and enjoying.

“Mom, look at that. Isn’t it funny?”

With Sign Language Zoom, it’s easier for CODA parents to better understand what their children are watching through a bigger sign language screen. Now, the entire family can enjoy their time in front of the TV and share even more laughter and joy together.

[Sign Language Zoom]

Sign Language Zoom automatically recognizes and enlarges the sign language area, enabling users who are deaf to see more detailed mouth and facial expressions. You can specify a sign language area and adjust the magnification by up to 200%. Users who are deaf or hard of hearing can also use this function to zoom in on a specific area of the screen, such as scores for sporting events or quiz programs.

* On TVs: Home → Menu → Settings → All settings → General & Privacy → Accessibility → Sign Language Zoom Settings
** Available on all Samsung Smart TVs released in 2021 or later.

Sharing With the World

Each and every one of us is different, with our physical abilities changing over time. Given the diverse range of experiences being lived by others around the world, it is important that everyone feels empowered to do what they want, meet who they want and live the life they want.

“I want to inspire people through social media.”

People with physical disabilities can seamlessly take, edit and share selfies on social media using the Assistant menu on Samsung smartphones or tablets. With the Assistant menu, everyone can use their personal devices to communicate and meet new friends.

[Assistant menu]

The Assistant menu lets you easily control your phone by simply tapping a shortcut icon to access hardware buttons, apps, features and other settings.

* On smartphones and tablets: Settings → Accessibility → Interaction and dexterity → Assistant menu

Staying in Tune With the World

For people who are deaf and hard of hearing, navigating the world can take a different shape. With this in mind, it’s important for them to receive everyday notifications in new ways.

“Light can become a language of its own.”

Light can help those who are deaf and hard of hearing receive the information they need in their day-to-day life. SmartThings uses lighting to notify users when someone’s at the door, when meals are ready or when the laundry is done. Light has become a way to communicate through SmartThings.

[SmartThings]

Sync your devices and appliances via the SmartThings app to control and get notifications about your air conditioner, washing machine, fridge and more.* Then, connect partner products such as door sensors, lights and thermostats to automate and simplify your own day-to-day routine** — like setting your smart light to dim or change colors once the laundry is done.

* To set notifications

On smartphone and tablets: SmartThings app → Menu → Notifications → More (⋮) → Notification settings

On TVs released in 2021 or later: SmartThings app → Settings → Notifications

TV notifications are limited to minimize any interruptions to the viewing experience.

** To set SmartThings routines

Possibilities Never Before Imagined

Samsung believes these stories can foster a world where all people benefit from the convenience enabled by technology.

Users with disabilities have utilized Samsung’s features in creative ways to enhance their lives — despite the fact that some functions were not originally designed as accessibility features. To this end, Samsung has provided new ways for users to interact with its products and services and has taken inspiration from real-life cases to develop stories with guidance from the Samsung Accessibility Committee4 and Samsung Family Supporters.5

Samsung hopes to continue creating accessible designs that unlock new possibilities so everyone will be empowered to lead meaningful, independent lives.

From electric wheelchairs to hearing aids, assistive technology is key to enhancing the social participation of persons with disabilities. As image recognition technology continues to advance, mobile devices have the potential to help users with visual impairments overcome barriers in daily life.

By working with users and listening to their feedback, Samsung has developed accessibility features to empower individuals with visual impairments for Galaxy devices.1,2 To mark this year’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day, the company is putting a spotlight on the three features which have enabled many Galaxy users to live more freely.

Transforming Lives With Innovations

The idea behind Bixby Vision is a simple one. It’s designed to give people the ability to gain more information about their surroundings by using a smartphone’s camera. The new accessibility features, namely Quick Reader, Scene Describer, and Color Detector, build on this capability to help users with visual impairments navigate the world and enjoy more enriching experiences.3

Understanding labels and signs is a daily challenge for users with visual impairments. By reading out written text in real-time, Quick Reader helps these users gain a better understanding of textual information in daily life.4

The feature can also recognize over 1,000 common objects and items. From identifying food and vegetables in the kitchen to locating cleaning products, it can help users carry out daily routines with ease.

Scene Describer provides descriptions of any images, including captured scenes and downloaded pictures. This could help users identify potential obstacles when they are navigating their surroundings.

While it’s possible for people with visual impairments to identify the materials and design of their clothes by touch, it’s difficult to do the same when it comes to distinguishing between different colors. The Color Detector provides a way to address this.5 With a simple camera scan, the feature can inform users of the color of the item in the frame.

“Before these features came to Bixby Vision, I had trouble picking my work clothes and identifying objects in the office alone,” says Kwangman Moon, a Galaxy user with visual impairment. “Now, I don’t need to give up on these simple tasks just because I can’t see.”

Collaborating With Users

Receiving users’ feedback is essential for the development of any mobile feature. For the latest Bixby Vision accessibility features, Samsung’s collaborative approach takes on even more significant importance.

“One of the problems we faced when testing the features with visually impaired users is that their way of experiencing the world is different from ours,” says Mikael Fodor, UX researcher at Samsung Research United Kingdom. “Being able to observe how the features work in the hands of our users and in real life situations allows us to understand problems and make improvements scientifically.”

For users who collaborate with Samsung engineers, being able to improve accessibility features and help others in similar situations overcome challenges is an empowering process.

“Many companies ask us to share our opinions regarding accessibility features. But for societal, technological, and institutional reasons, our feedback rarely gets reflected in their products,” says Sangjun Kim, a user who contributes to improving the accessibility of Galaxy smartphones. “By contrast, Samsung takes into account even the smallest feedback to improve app features. It’s been a special experience to see my feedback reflected in the real product.”

An Inclusive Mobile Future

While the latest accessibility features on Bixby Vision, as well as the high-contrast theme and Light Sensing on One UI 2, represent a key milestone in Samsung’s innovation history, the company understands that creating an inclusive environment on mobile devices is an ongoing process. Driven by the commitment to make mobile technology truly accessible to everyone, Samsung will continue to collaborate with users to develop boundary-pushing yet meaningful innovations.

1 Since 2016, Samsung Electronics has been running the Samsung Supporters program, which works with users with disabilities to improve accessibility features.

2 New accessibility features, including Quick Reader, Scene Describer, and Color Detector, are available on Galaxy devices with Bixby Vision 3.5 or above.

3 Availability of Scene Describer may vary by region.

4 Quick Reader supports 57 languages.

5 Color Detector can discern between 33 different colors.

Samsung Electronics today announced the new Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, a stylish and affordable tablet designed for both work and play. With generous screen space, a thin and compact body and a redesigned S Pen included in the box, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is the ideal tablet for taking quick notes and enjoying your favorite content.

“We understand how busy modern life can be, as our work becomes more flexible and blends with our personal time. Consumers need a versatile device that can integrate seamlessly into their everyday lifestyle,” said Woncheol Chai, SVP and Head of Product Planning Team, Mobile Communication Business, Samsung Electronics. “The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and the new S Pen are packed with the latest technology to help people stay organized, multitask and capture ideas effortlessly, allowing them to spend time on what matters most to them.”

Create More and Stress Less With the Redesigned S Pen

Whether you are using your tablet for work, study, or just during downtime at home, the updated S Pen is the perfect notetaking and multitasking assistant. The new S Pen has a refreshed design that makes it as practical and comfortable to use as a traditional pen. Weighing only 7.03g, the S Pen is light and easy-to-use, and its improved pen latency and 0.7mm pen tip deliver greater precision for notetaking and drawing. When you’re finished capturing your ideas, the S Pen snaps magnetically onto the right side of the tablet, or to the optional book cover case, making it easy to use without the concern of misplacing it. The S Pen on the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is also battery-free, so you never have to worry about losing charge when using your S Pen.

Using the S Pen and Samsung Notes, you can transform handwritten notes into typed text instantly.1 Categorize and search your notes with ease through tags, highlight important passages and enlarge the content on the notes with the 300% zoom feature. All your notes can be easily exported as a PDF, JPEG image, text file or Microsoft Word document.

Inspired Design That Won’t Weigh You Down

With a 10.4-inch screen and narrow bezels, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite benefits from a wide and immersive display. The lightweight and compact design makes it the ideal tablet for multitasking, notetaking and watching videos or movies. Equipped with the latest version of One UI, optimized for the larger tablet screen, Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has a more intuitive visual interface and simplified navigation tools, making switching between multiple applications smooth and effortless so that you can focus on the task at hand.

Available in three beautiful colors,2 Oxford Gray, Angora Blue and Chiffon Pink, with a matching S Pen and optional book cover, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is a stylish accessory as well as a powerful productivity device.

Enhanced Entertainment Features

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is packed with clever, helpful and entertaining features that make listening to music, streaming content, shopping online or connecting with friends easier and more enjoyable. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite includes dual speakers with sound by AKG and Dolby Atmos 3D surround sound for outstanding immersive audio, so whether you’re watching a YouTube video, streaming your favorite show or listening to a great playlist, you’ll experience premium quality sound.

Samsung has partnered with YouTube and Spotify so you can get even more out of your favorite apps on the Galaxy range. Galaxy Tab S6 Lite users can enjoy ad-free YouTube videos, the ability to download and watch videos offline and free access to YouTube Music and YouTube Kids with YouTube Premium for 4 months.3 Spotify seamlessly integrates into the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite’s user interface, so you can easily search for music and podcasts, or even set your favorite song as your alarm.4 The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite can also wirelessly connect to your home speaker5 setup, so you can play your favorite playlists from Spotify on another device or speaker around your home, all controlled by your tablet.

The Galaxy Experience at Home

Put the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite at the heart of your home to stay productive and organized. You can take calls and send and receive text messages6 through your Samsung account on your tablet, even when your smartphone is out of reach or in another room, or stay connected with friends and colleagues using Google Duo video calls on Galaxy Tab S6 Lite.7 Use the improved Daily Board display to control music, view your calendar, check the weather and write quick memos and reminders. The new Bixby features and capabilities such as Bixby Voice, Bixby Vision and Bixby Routines will also enhance your overall productivity and entertainment experiences.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is a device that can be used by the entire family. With Samsung Kids,8 you can set daily playtime allowances, restrict access to certain apps and introduce your kids to the digital world safely with a range of exciting, colorful learning apps and games.

Searching for a new appliance or piece of furniture that fits perfectly into your home can be a challenge, but when you find the right match it’s a moment of pure delight. When searching online, there’s another concern as you might not feel sure until the delivery comes that the appliance’s color will complement the surrounding décor or leave enough space to open the door of a dryer or a fridge. To streamline this process, Samsung Electronics has equipped its Galaxy S10 line with AR services that remove the worry and hassle from buying new appliances and furniture.

Visualize Your New Room

Samsung’s AR service, Bixby Vision1, acts as a visual guide, allowing you to see more with your smartphone camera. The home décor function of the Galaxy S10’s Bixby Vision can show you how your home might look with new home appliances and furniture, virtually positioning them wherever you wish to see them. To enable the function, simply open up Bixby Vision, select the home décor function from the apps menu and point your camera to the area where you want to place home appliances or furniture. After choosing an appliance or piece of furniture, the object will appear wherever you tap on the screen. You can choose sofas, rugs, tables, fridges, or any other home product that you want, and virtually place them wherever you like.

The discovery doesn’t end there: Bixby Vision offers even more services that allow you to visualize your new appliances and furniture from the comfort of your own home. The AR service can apply a 3D effect to key Samsung home appliances, allowing you to see how doors open, for example. Collaborating with U.S. online furniture company, Wayfair, Bixby Vision’s home décor function runs automatically whenever you encounter 3D content on the website within the Samsung Internet app, enabling you to see what the product would look like in your room without leaving your house.

“We are planning to increase the types of home appliances and furniture that support the home décor function,” said Martin Lee of Product Strategy team at Samsung Electronics.

Check for the Right Fit

With the Galaxy S10 5G, you can make speedy assessments of an object’s dimensions without frantically searching for the tape measure. Using the 3D Depth Camera on the Galaxy S10 5G, the Quick Measure app shows you the height, width and length of the object captured by your camera. This feature makes it easier for you to buy a mattress that fits your bed frame, or a set of chairs that are the right height for your kitchen table.

Samsung Electronics reveals the new Galaxy A80 – a smartphone created for the way people are engaging in the Era of Live. People are increasingly using their smartphones to share live interactions – capturing spontaneous photos, streaming live video and connecting over shared experiences that are happening right now. We are moving from the ‘era of the selfie’ to the ‘era of live’, where people are fostering more genuine and meaningful connections. Built to drive this evolution, the Galaxy A80 offers compelling innovations: a captivating, full-screen display, Samsung’s first revolutionary rotating camera and an intelligent battery.

“Consumers are at the center of everything we do and they search for devices personalized to their specific lifestyle. Armed with our expertise, global capabilities and rich consumer insights, Samsung is uniquely positioned to provide innovations for everyone,” said DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “The Galaxy A Series provides a range of models so everyone can choose a device that fits their unique needs and enables them to pursue their passions. The Galaxy A80 offers premium features for digital natives who want to fully engage in the Era of Live.”

Capture the World as You See It

Created with Samsung’s first rotating camera, the Galaxy A80 lets people seamlessly capture the world around them. When users select the selfie mode in the camera app, the three cameras automatically pop-up from the back of the phone and rotate. The innovative camera mechanism delivers the same extraordinary triple camera experience with the same high-resolution lens, front and rear, so you never have to sacrifice on quality.

With the 48MP main camera, users can now shoot vivid images day and night. The Galaxy A80’s 3D Depth camera offers Live Focus videos by scanning objects for measurement and depth.

Since introducing Bixby alongside the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung Electronics has continuously enriched its AI platform with enhancements that have made it more intuitive, intelligent, and useful to users.

Now, with the introduction of the Galaxy S10 line, Samsung has taken Bixby to the next level – introducing new capabilities to Bixby Voice and Bixby Vision, as well as more ways to make users’ lives easier with personalized Bixby Routines.

Let’s take a closer look at how Bixby’s newest tools will help you streamline your day.

Simplify Your Routine

We all have our routines that help us manage our day, and time is, of course, precious. That’s why Samsung developed Bixby Routines – a clever feature that allows Bixby to learn your unique routines and recommend ways to save more time.

Bixby Routines utilizes machine learning to analyze your personal patterns and preferences based on how you use your phone. It uses that insight to suggest easily configurable routines – incorporating specific native apps, settings or features – that can instantly automate multiple tasks to make your life easier.

In addition to offering nine convenient preset options, Bixby Routines presents you with up to six personalized routines – based on how you use your phone at certain times and places – that minimize the steps required to get things done. For example, when you go to bed, your Galaxy S10 may run your personal “Before Bed” routine, which may include automatically turning on Night Mode, lowering the brightness, and muting sound. It’s as simple – and convenient – as that.

Instant Insight with Bixby Vision

Featuring a built-in AI that provides better image recognition and is capable of recognizing a wide range of objects, the camera’s enhanced Bixby Vision function places all-new AR capabilities at users’ fingertips.

Bixby Vision’s expanded Lens Mode features a variety of image-recognition options, including a new Wish List option. When you see a product you’re interested in buying, Wish List makes it easy to save it for later reference.1

The new Apps Mode offers users more convenient ways to utilize AR in their everyday lives. Use it to, for instance, virtually try on a new pair of sunglasses or some new makeup, or see how your hair would look dyed, or how your living space would look if you added an appliance or piece of furniture that you’re interested in buying.2

Apps Mode also makes it easy to learn more about movies you’re interested in through its new Picture Play3 feature. When you see a poster for an upcoming release, simply show it to Bixby and it’ll instantly play the trailer.

Hands-Free Convenience

Galaxy device users are used to asking Bixby to help them search the web, make a reservation, or launch an app when their hands are full. Now, Bixby’s new Voice Unlock4 feature allows you to activate and interact with Bixby when your phone is locked for an even more comfortable user experience.

Bixby Voice Unlock creates a convenient way to utilize Bixby when your phone is out of reach. Say you’re in the middle of making dinner and you need to double check exactly how much of a particular ingredient the recipe calls for. With Bixby Voice Unlock, rather than smudging up your screen with sauce and bits of food, you can simply say “Hi Bixby” to unlock your phone, and then ask Bixby to pull up the recipe for you.

Make Bixby Your Own

To offer users more freedom to utilize Bixby’s handy button, the Galaxy S10 introduces Bixby Key Customization.5 Now, you can customize the button to launch Bixby with either a single or double press, and map the other option to launch your favorite app or Quick command. It’s just another convenient way to make Bixby your own.

Speaking of Quick commands, Bixby’s update also makes it easy to share customized Quick commands with your friends.

Quick commands make using Bixby even more convenient by allowing you to replace one or more commands with a simple word or phrase. The opportunities for personalization are endless, and your Quick commands can also be saved as shortcut icons on your phone’s home screen for easy access.6 This is especially useful in situations when you’d rather not speak out loud. So for example, when you’re heading into a theater, if you tap the icon for your “Movie Time” Quick command, Bixby will instantly switch your phone to silent mode, turn on “Do not disturb,” reduce brightness completely, and turn off the screen so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the film without interruptions.

And now, with the Galaxy S10, if you’ve crafted the perfect Quick command and you want to send it to someone else, you can simply tap “share” to instantly send it as a link via text message or messaging app.7

When travelling abroad, language can be the greatest barrier to discovery as you try to find your way around. With the Live Translation function, Bixby Vision can capture the text it finds in an image and then provide an accurate translation of that text, deciphering words so you can be confident that you know where you are going. You don’t even have to take a photo. Select from 54 input languages and 104 output languages**, and the intelligent assistant will translate the text in real time on the screen.

Details about your surrounding area shift as you point the camera in different directions, syncing with your map app so that you can navigate easily to your chosen destination.

If you point the camera at the sky, Place Mode will generate weather information and a forecast tailored to your location.

Bixby is an intelligent interface that makes interacting with your device, services and apps more seamless and instinctive. Bixby’s deep integration, contextual awareness and newly launched U.S. English voice support offer an assistant unlike any other – one that’s intelligent enough to learn your habits, and even your manner of speaking, and respond accordingly.

But how exactly does Bixby work, and how can you ensure that you’re getting the most out of it? Here are some common questions and answers to help you get better acquainted with the intuitive interface.

Q. How did Bixby get its name?

We decided to call our new interface Bixby because we found the name to be playful, smart and gender neutral; perfect for someone who is bold and in the know.

Q. How do I activate Bixby Voice?

You can activate Bixby by saying “Hi, Bixby,” or by either pressing or holding its dedicated button (located under the volume controls of your compatible device) and dictating your request.1

Q. Does Bixby get smarter the more I use it?

Yes, it does. Thanks to Bixby’s iterative deep learning technology, the more you use the interface, the smarter it gets.

For example, whenever you’re not satisfied with its response, Bixby will work with you to learn how to better serve your needs. Each time Bixby responds to a command, it presents you with the option to “Teach me” – to select a more appropriate response from a list of similar commands. The next time you make that request, Bixby will remember exactly what you wanted it to do.

Q. What can I do to make sure that Bixby Voice hears me clearly?

Bixby is optimized to detect voice commands when users are 15 to 20 centimeters (5.9 to 7.9 inches) away from their device. If you’re too close or too far, it can affect the voice recognition technology’s accuracy. For best results, speak clearly and at a volume comparable to normal conversation levels.

Q. Do I need to be in a quiet area in order for Bixby Voice to hear me?

Bixby works best in environments where your voice may be clearly heard. That being said, Bixby’s deep learning technology allows the interface to distinguish your voice commands from ambient noise, even when you’re listening to music, by carefully analyzing sound frequencies.

When in particularly loud environments, you can activate Bixby Voice using your earphones’ play/pause button and microphone.

Q. What languages and dialects does Bixby understand?

Bixby Voice is currently available in Korea and the U.S., and supports commands in Korean and U.S. English. Users in the U.S. and Korea can switch between Korean and English by adjusting Bixby’s language settings.

Bixby’s understanding of natural language is what allows it to learn dialects. We’ve taught Bixby various dialects’ distinct intonations, vocabulary and grammatical structures, and we’re currently working on providing support for more.

Q. What are Quick Commands?

Bixby’s Quick Commands allow you to issue multi-step, complicated requests with convenient keywords.

With Quick Commands, users can replace a long request, such as “Track my run using the Samsung Health app,” with a short, simple command, such as “Run.” These shortcuts allow you to interact more seamlessly with your phone. Quick Commands may be accessed under Bixby Home’s “My Bixby” menu.

Q. Will using Bixby eat up my mobile data, and is it possible to use it overseas?

Bixby only utilizes your mobile data when listening to a command, not before or after. As a result, the length of the command ultimately determines the amount of mobile data used.

If Bixby Voice is activated and you’re using a licensed SIM card, it’s possible to use the interface even when you’re overseas.2
Actual range of use may vary depending on the apps you’re using.

Q. What is Bixby Vision, and how does it work?

Bixby Vision was designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of what you’re looking at, allowing you to use your camera to easily scan and search for relevant information on the objects and places around you.

Bixby Vision offers information on everything from purchasing options for a particular product to details on your current location and even the bottle of wine you’re enjoying. It is also capable of scanning business cards and performing convenient translations.

After scanning an object, users can use Bixby Vision’s image search3
function to locate it online. Once Bixby has identified the object, it will automatically pull up related images on Pinterest.4

Bixby Vision works best in bright environments, and when you hold your camera steady. The screen should not be upside down, and if the object in focus is a product, it should be captured from the front to aid identification.

Q. Who are some of Bixby Vision’s current retail partners?

We’ve forged partnerships with popular online shopping platforms in each region to allow consumers to enjoy a much more convenient shopping experience with Bixby. These partners include Amazon in North America, Japan and several major markets across Europe, as well as Taobao in China and Samsung Pay Shopping in Korea.

Q. What languages can Bixby Vision translate?

Bixby Vision’s advanced OCR (object character recognition) technology allows it to scan and recognize a total of 40 languages. These languages can then be interpreted into 104 different dialects via Google’s powerful translation database.4

Q. How is Reminder different from my device’s clock or calendar app?

Reminder lets users do much more than simply log an appointment or create an alarm.

The function utilizes Bixby’s voice support and contextual awareness to allow users to set smart reminders for specified times, places or circumstances.

Reminder is also integrated into other apps. You can use Reminder to save webpage URLs in the Samsung Internet app, as well as messages that you’d like to get back to later in the Messages app. You can also pin reminders to your device’s Always On Display to make them visible at all times, and access your collected reminders via your device’s edge panel.

Q. What is Bixby Home, and how does it cater to users’ individual needs?

Bixby Home serves as a gateway to Bixby’s various functions and presents your most contextually relevant apps and services on a single screen, so the content you care about is just a swipe away.

Bixby learns your routine and serves up the information you need when you need it. It looks for patterns in your app usage to predict what you might be looking for, and when you’re most likely to look for it. The more you use your smartphone, the more relevant Bixby’s content suggestions will become.

Bixby Home will automatically populate based on your actions, but you can also customize the experience to best suit your needs. You also have the options to pin your favorite cards to the top of your Home page for easy reference, and hide any cards that you no longer wish to see.

Q. Is my personal data safe with Bixby?

Bixby stores users’ personal data in accordance with stringent security procedures.

Users may choose to delete data that Bixby saves from Bixby’s settings at any time. Bixby only collects data necessary to improve or personalize your experience, and ensures that your personal information is never transmitted.

1Voice wake-up must be activated in order to use this feature

2Language support is currently limited to Korean and U.S. English, and the user’s device must be Bixby-compatible. App and service compatibility may vary.
