Samsung Electronics today announced new updates to Bixby that improve user experience, performance and capabilities of the intelligent assistant and platform. The new updates deliver significant improvements in Bixby’s ability with enhanced language recognition, giving people greater control over their mobile experience.

“When Samsung first launched Bixby as a voice assistant, it was part of a vision to create a human-to-machine interface that makes life easier and can advance over time with Samsung Galaxy innovation,” said YoungJip Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Artificial Intelligence Team in Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics. “Today, we introduce updates to build a more intelligent interface that is proactive and adaptive, giving people greater control over their mobile experience.”

Giving People Greater Control Over Their Mobile Experience

The new Bixby updates bring several new features and improvements that allow people to customize their user experience further, including the recent availability of Bixby Text Call1 in English. Now, English speakers can answer calls from anywhere by typing a message, which Bixby converts to audio and communicates to the caller directly on their behalf.

Users can also personalize their Bixby Text Call voice. Using the new Bixby Custom Voice Creator,2 users can record different sentences for Bixby to analyze and create an AI generated copy of their voice and tone. Currently available in Korean, this generated voice is planned to be compatible with other Samsung apps beyond phone calls. And for those who want to customize their wake word, Bixby now supports changes to the Custom wake-up3 phrase within Bixby settings as well, adding a new option to create a personalized wake-up phrase.

From Intelligent Assistant to Intelligent Platform

Today, Bixby can provide more seamless continuity and better attune to user needs with the introduction of new scenarios,4 including playing music depending on the type of exercise in Samsung Health or saving schedules in Calendar. Now, Bixby can better understand intent and process follow-up requests by understanding context and associating words previously used in interactions. For example, Bixby users can first launch a workout on Samsung Health and then ask Bixby to play music5 that best suits that exercise by saying “Play music for this workout.”

Enhanced Language Recognition, Processing and Response

In addition to these great new features, Samsung also expanded Bixby’s on-device AI support.6 Users can run key commands entirely offline, such as setting a timer, taking a screenshot or turning on the flashlight. By integrating on-device AI with its native applications,7 Samsung was able to further expand its language offering8 and capabilities with advanced AI-based voice dictation. These updates to Bixby will be made possible by the powerful innovation found in Samsung Galaxy devices, including the industry-leading performance that enables on-device AI applications.

Availability

Bixby updates will be available for Samsung Galaxy users in February9 through a software update. For more information, please visit www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/bixby.

1 Bixby Text Call is available on selective models including Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. It works on phones with One UI 4.1.1 or above for Korean and phones with One UI 5.1 or above for English.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its new robot vacuum cleaner, Jet Bot AI+.* First unveiled at CES 2021, the new robot vacuum demonstrates Samsung’s leadership in offering consumers innovative and intelligent solutions to optimize home cleaning routines. It will launch in the U.S. and Europe in June, and will also be available in the Latin American, Southeast Asian and CIS regions during the second half of 2021.

“Jet Bot AI+* reflects Samsung’s ongoing dedication to creating connected appliances that deliver dynamic performance that can adapt to the varying needs of our consumers,” said Hyesoon Yang, Vice President and Head of the Customer Experience Team of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re truly excited to introduce a robot vacuum that comes with industry-leading object detection and recognition technologies. Consumers can now clean their homes more intelligently and efficiently using the AI-powered Jet Bot that makes cleaning more personalized and convenient.”

World-Class Object Recognition and AI Driving

Jet Bot AI+* is the world’s first robot vacuum that comes with an active stereo-type 3D sensor, which accurately scans a wide area1 to avoid small, hard-to-detect objects on the floor. Its 3D depth camera—equivalent to 256,000 distance sensors—can precisely detect obstacles as small2 as 1cm. This game-changing object detection can prevent the unit from getting stuck on small obstacles in its cleaning path.

Jet Bot AI+* is also the world’s first robot vacuum to be equipped with an Intel AI solution, which powers its Jet AI Object Recognition technology. The smart solution allows the robot to navigate with more accuracy by recognizing not only the objects on the floor, but also appliances and furniture.3 The robot’s smart decision-making ensures users can have their unit clean closely around items such as children’s toys while maintaining a safe distance from delicate objects like porcelain vases.4 It can also classify items such as pet excrements, glass cups and electrical cables as dangerous or likely to cause secondary contamination in order to avoid them.

Jet Bot AI+* is even equipped with a LiDAR Sensor that calculates its location precisely to optimize its cleaning path by repeatedly scanning the room5 to gather distance information. This technology works well in dark areas such as low-lit rooms or underneath furniture so the unit can cover a larger area6 with minimal blind spots.

Powerful Clean From Start to Finish

Users can clean their homes much more thoroughly with advanced technologies that enable powerful cleaning. Jet Bot AI+’s* Digital Inverter Motor maximizes the suction power for a deeper clean. And with its Intelligent Power Control function, the new robot vacuum can even identify the type of surface it needs to clean as well as the amount of dust that is on it. Using this information, the unit can automatically adjust its suction power for a more optimized cleaning session.

Jet Bot AI+* also comes with a host of hygiene-related functionalities that enable effortless floor cleaning while ensuring that dust is securely trapped and less likely to be released back into the air. Its Advanced 5 Layered Filtration system traps 99.99%7 of micro dust, including 0.5~4.2µm sized particles that easily escape. All parts and filters are washable, so they can be kept hygienic.

Jet Bot AI+* pairs with the Clean Station, which collects dirt and hair in a 2.5L dust bag and only needs to be replaced once in every one to three months.8 After cleaning, the robot vacuum automatically returns to the Clean Station, emptying itself9 using Air Pulse technology complemented by a multi-layered filtration system that traps 99.999% of fine dust,10 ensuring virtually no dust is released back into the air.

Convenient Cleaning for Hassle-Free Usability

Users can control and monitor the Jet Bot AI+* remotely using the SmartThings app11 on their smartphones. The robot vacuum can be scheduled to clean selectively in either a single room or multiple rooms with the Select & Go function. The app can also be used to custom-define virtual No-Go Zones to prevent the unit from entering certain areas without the need for physical barriers.

The smart robot also offers Bixby voice recognition capabilities,12 meaning users can use voice commands to schedule cleaning sessions, change modes or even ask for the latest information such as news or weather updates.

And with Live Cleaning Report, users can easily track the movement of their Jet Bot AI+* on a virtual map of their homes in real time. Users can see where it has cleaned, and even pause it or instruct it to stop cleaning. Once it has completed cleaning, users can check its cleaning history to see which areas have been cleaned, how long it took, and which path it followed.

Moreover, users can monitor their home remotely with the Jet Bot AI+’s* Patrol Mode, which uses the unit’s front camera to livestream video images through the SmartThings app. The Patrol Mode allows users to monitor the status of rooms they want to check while away, and even lets them enjoy this feature through scheduling. The smart unit also supports end-to-end encryption, so video clips are secure and can only be viewed by an authorized user.

Intuitive Pet Care for the Modern Pet Parent

Pet owners can take advantage of these features further with the SmartThings Pet service. Set to launch in August, SmartThings Pet allows users to check in and care for their pets even while they are away. For example, SmartThings Pet syncs with products from PETKIT, a tech company dedicated to bringing smart pet products to the market—namely its Element feeder series and the COZY smart pet house.13 By integrating pet care into its smart home ecosystem, Samsung is reimagining how consumers live and interact with their pet companions.

* The new product names go into effect on July 5, 2021. This is a change to the product name only. Jet Bot AI+ will become Bespoke Jet Bot AI+.

1 Up to 1m, Horizontal field of view: 60°, Vertical field of view: 40°.

2 As small as about 1cm wide, 1cm tall and 1cm deep.

Using a smartphone is an everyday task that comes easily to most. The typical user needs no instruction on how to send an email, request a taxi or stream a TV show, as navigating through various menus and apps is, for the most part, straightforward and intuitive. But for the millions of smartphone users with a physical, sensory or cognitive disability, operating a device can be a frustrating experience to say the least.

As our world becomes increasingly more digital, and technology plays a bigger role in our lives, Samsung Electronics is working to develop various features that enable its products to be accessed and used to the greatest extent possible by all people. Let’s take a closer look at the company’s approach to do so in part three of our “Strides in Stewardship” series.

Reflecting Feedback to Improve Accessibility

“Over the past decade, as mobile trends have shifted from conventional cell phones to smartphones, many of us with visual impairments have found it difficult to use the new devices,” said Gwangman Moon, a South Korean man who lost his sight in 1999. “Today’s smartphones don’t have mechanical keyboards. So, because we rely on our sense of touch to receive a lot information, we need to carry a separate keyboard to use them.”

Moon, who first got involved with Samsung through a company-sponsored computer education program for the visually impaired, now participates as a member of Samsung Supporters, a volunteer group that tests out smartphone features for usability and offers feedback to improve device accessibility. Most recently, he has helped to advance the Voice Assistant on the Galaxy S8 by determining which features cannot be activated using only voice commands.

In addition to listening to external feedback from people like Moon who use Samsung products in their daily lives, the company has also established Smart Angels, a team of employees that voluntarily educates people with various disabilities on how to use their devices. The volunteers also listen to the opinions of the users to better understand how the company can further enhance accessibility.

Eliminating Obstacles Through Universal Design

To reflect feedback received through these interactions, Samsung has developed and applied a variety of auxiliary technical solutions across the entire Galaxy lineup so that just about everyone can take advantage of its innovative products and features.

For example, users with visual impairments can make use of high contrast fonts, keyboards and downloadable themes as well as a High Contrast Mode for the Samsung Internet app that all enable easier reading and higher visibility. Voice Assistant, meanwhile, provides spoken feedback about information on the screen, and Rapid Key Input reads out the keyboard character being touched, thus eliminating the need for additional accessories.

Similarly, those with hearing impairments are able to utilize the Sound Detectors tool, which provides visual cues and vibration when the sound of a baby crying or a doorbell ringing is detected, and Flash Notification, which alerts the user of alarms and notifications with a flash of the camera light or screen.

Easy Screen Turn On and Universal Switch features make the device easier to control through the use of gestures and/or movements, enhancing usability for those with mobility and dexterity impairments.

These are just a few of the growing number of features Samsung has employed to make the daily task of using a smartphone easier and more enjoyable for all.

Making Life Easier, One Service at a Time

In addition to UX and app enhancements, Samsung’s mobile services are also adding an element of convenience to everyday activities.

Bixby Voice eliminates the need to go through multiple steps to accomplish a mobile task, allowing users, for instance, to dictate and send a text to a friend or check their daily schedule with a simple voice command. Likewise, Bixby Voice makes it possible to quickly engage with friends, family and other communities on social media and in text messaging applications.

“Bixby is revolutionary,” explained Moon of his own personal experiences. “Because a message or comment can be transcribed by simply speaking it out, we can save a lot of time by not having to type it. In this way, Bixby instills in me a sense of confidence when communicating with others.”

Bixby Vision also makes life easier by using the phone’s camera app to relay information about one’s surroundings. To illustrate, it can vocalize which food items are in front of a user so they can know that they’re opening the specific potato chips or soft drink they want to consume.

Another example is Samsung DeX. While the service enhances the mobile experience by allowing users to use their smartphone like a desktop by providing a seamless, secure mobile to PC transition, it also enables those who experience difficulties typing or using gestures on a smartphone to more easily navigate content via a larger display.

“Now I can use a keyboard and mouse to control my smartphone more conveniently,” noted Donghee Lee, a smartphone user who controls his device with his toes. “It’s very well designed in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities.”

A More Accessible Future

Samsung’s efforts to enhance accessibility have recently been praised by various organizations including ONCE, the National Organization of the Blind in Spain, who recognized the Galaxy S8 and S8+ as devices that comply with the universal accessibility requirements and are properly equipped for visually impaired users. Additionally, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea will present Inho Baek, Samsung’s Mobile Accessibility UX Designer, with the Human Rights Award of Korea on December 8.

Baek is honored to have been nominated for such an accolade, but admits that he is more excited to learn of the many ways Samsung’s products have and will continue to influence users’ lives.

“Since implementing the new accessibility features on Samsung’s Galaxy products, many people, particularly those with disabilities, have told us that their quality of life has greatly improved,” he said. “But we have a vision that will drive the company to improve even further. In fact, it’s our responsibility. It’s my hope that through universal design, everyone will one day be able to enjoy new and beneficial experiences, regardless of their level of ability.”

Samsung Electronics today announced that Bixby’s voice capabilities have expanded to more than 200 countries and territories worldwide, allowing millions of consumers to experience a smarter way to interact with their phones. In addition to South Korea and the United States, consumers in countries across the world, including the U.K., Australia, Canada and South Africa, will be able to utilize the intelligent interface to help them get things done faster and easier.

Currently available in U.S. English and Korean1, Bixby brings enhanced smartphone productivity and personalization through Quick Commands, a feature that allows you to easily create a custom voice command to use in place of a sequence of one or more commands. For example, you can use the command “good night” as a shortcut for “Turn on Do-not-disturb mode, set an alarm for 6:00 AM and turn on blue light filter.”

Bixby also understands the way you actually speak, ask questions and make requests. For example, if you take a photo and then tell Bixby to “send the picture just taken to Mom,” Bixby understand cross-application commands and will know which photo you are referring to and will text it to your mom. This natural language understanding makes interacting with your smartphone easier and more intuitive. With its iterative deep learning technology, Bixby will improve over time to recognize your personal preferences and ways of speaking.

Bixby is unique in that it is an intelligent interface, rather than a standalone app. When an application becomes Bixby-enabled, Bixby will support almost every task that the application is capable of performing using voice, touch or text. Bixby’s deep integration is also built into the smartphone settings so that you can change phone options– such as setting the screen timeout or showing all notifications– without interrupting what you are currently doing.

“Now millions of customers worldwide have access to a new and intelligent way of interacting with their phone,” said Injong Rhee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Software and Services of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “The expansion of Bixby’s voice capabilities is an initial step in the continued rollout of Bixby functionality. In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices.”

Samsung plans to continue expanding Bixby’s voice capabilities to additional countries, languages, devices, features and third-party applications. By further enhancing its mobile experience and solutions offerings, even more users can interact with their device and manage their apps and services more seamlessly and instinctively.

Starting today, Galaxy S8 and S8+2 users can enable Bixby’s voice capabilities by pressing the Bixby button to begin onboarding. You can now activate Bixby by holding the dedicated button on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ phones, or by simply saying, “Hi, Bixby.”

For more information on how to get more done with your day with Bixby, please visit: https://news.samsung.com/global/how-to-get-more-done-in-your-day-with-bixby

1Voice command recognizes English (US) and Korean. Not all accents, dialects and expressions recognized. Service ability may vary by country or carrier. Natural language understanding allows Bixby to continuously improve its ability to interpret regional dialects. But, since Bixby learns more frequently used command terms more quickly, it will take more time for Bixby to fully understand regional dialects that are used less frequently.

2Bixby is currently available on select devices, including the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Bixby is an intelligent interface that makes interacting with your phone – and managing its functions and your favorite apps – easy.

Bixby’s advanced voice capabilities1 allow you to effortlessly manage your phone and your connected life using simple, natural commands. The voice support is fully integrated into your phone’s native apps, settings, and a growing list of third-party apps, placing your phone’s most convenient and powerful features at your beck and call. So whether you’d like help taking a selfie, organizing photos from your last vacation, tracking down a particular setting, or keeping your friends updated on social media, simply tell Bixby what you need and it will work with you to get things done faster and easier.

Here are just a few examples of how Bixby’s voice support can help you get more done in your day.

Snap a Selfie with Bixby and Share It with Your Friends and Followers

Bixby is an expert multitasker, capable of seamlessly navigating your phone’s menus and apps.

Bixby is built right into your phone’s camera, allowing you to take full advantage of your camera’s advanced features with simple spoken requests, and creating an easy way to share snapshots of your day.

For instance, you can tell Bixby to “Take a selfie” and use Bixby to edit and enhance your image and share it with friends on social media.

Simplify Your Bixby Conversations with Quick Commands

You don’t need to be formal or oversimplify requests when talking to Bixby. The interface’s understanding of natural language allows you to speak to your phone as you would a friend.

Bixby’s Quick Commands make interacting with the interface even more effortless by allowing you to replace long or complex requests with convenient keywords. For example, you can substitute a common command, such as “Turn my alarm on for 6:00 a.m.,” with a short and simple alternative, such as “Set alarm.”

To add a Quick Command, head to Bixby Home’s “My Bixby” menu.

Manage Apps and Settings with Ease

Bixby’s voice capability allows you to navigate your phone and go-to apps hands-free, without sacrificing access to settings or functions. Rather than manually searching for a particular feature, you can use Bixby to bypass menus and instantly locate the function you need.

Voice support is particularly useful when attempting to access functions that are buried beneath multiple menu screens. For example, with voice support, if you were to look up a recipe on your phone, you could ask Bixby to “Set screen timeout to 10 minutes” so you could roll up your sleeves and focus on cooking without needing to constantly wake up your device.

Bixby’s always there to help. Simply saying the word will allow you to streamline everyday tasks, including everything from clearing notifications and changing a wallpaper or ringtone, to activating commonly used features such as “Do not disturb” mode.

Enjoy a Smarter Driving Experience

Bixby’s ability to respond to voice commands also makes it a terrific co-pilot for road trips and daily commutes, allowing you to easily access key apps and functions while keeping your eyes on the road.

When you’re behind the wheel and you make a request, Bixby will ask you to unlock your phone with a custom voice password2 in order to carry out your command.

To set your unique voice password, simply locate the function under Bixby’s settings and follow the on-screen instructions. After you select a secure word or phrase, Bixby will ask you to read out a few sample sentences in order to get to know your distinct voice. Once finished, the next time you activate Bixby, you’ll be able to unlock your device using your chosen word or phrase.

When you need a little help getting where you’re going, ask Bixby to pull up your destination in your favorite navigation app. The interface’s voice support and app integration make it easy to find the fastest route to wherever you’re headed.

Bixby’s voice support allows drivers to handle complicated tasks hands-free, and even makes it possible to read and dictate responses to texts with messaging apps.

This is just a sample of some of the everyday tasks that Bixby was designed to streamline. To learn more about how to use Bixby’s voice capabilities to simplify daily life, check out Samsung’s comprehensive list of tips and tricks, located under “Tutorials” in Bixby Home.

1Language support is currently limited to Korean and U.S. English, and the user’s device must be Bixby-compatible. App and service compatibility may vary by region.

Bixby is an intelligent interface that makes interacting with your device, services and apps more seamless and instinctive. Bixby’s deep integration, contextual awareness and newly launched U.S. English voice support offer an assistant unlike any other – one that’s intelligent enough to learn your habits, and even your manner of speaking, and respond accordingly.

But how exactly does Bixby work, and how can you ensure that you’re getting the most out of it? Here are some common questions and answers to help you get better acquainted with the intuitive interface.

Q. How did Bixby get its name?

We decided to call our new interface Bixby because we found the name to be playful, smart and gender neutral; perfect for someone who is bold and in the know.

Q. How do I activate Bixby Voice?

You can activate Bixby by saying “Hi, Bixby,” or by either pressing or holding its dedicated button (located under the volume controls of your compatible device) and dictating your request.1

Q. Does Bixby get smarter the more I use it?

Yes, it does. Thanks to Bixby’s iterative deep learning technology, the more you use the interface, the smarter it gets.

For example, whenever you’re not satisfied with its response, Bixby will work with you to learn how to better serve your needs. Each time Bixby responds to a command, it presents you with the option to “Teach me” – to select a more appropriate response from a list of similar commands. The next time you make that request, Bixby will remember exactly what you wanted it to do.

Q. What can I do to make sure that Bixby Voice hears me clearly?

Bixby is optimized to detect voice commands when users are 15 to 20 centimeters (5.9 to 7.9 inches) away from their device. If you’re too close or too far, it can affect the voice recognition technology’s accuracy. For best results, speak clearly and at a volume comparable to normal conversation levels.

Q. Do I need to be in a quiet area in order for Bixby Voice to hear me?

Bixby works best in environments where your voice may be clearly heard. That being said, Bixby’s deep learning technology allows the interface to distinguish your voice commands from ambient noise, even when you’re listening to music, by carefully analyzing sound frequencies.

When in particularly loud environments, you can activate Bixby Voice using your earphones’ play/pause button and microphone.

Q. What languages and dialects does Bixby understand?

Bixby Voice is currently available in Korea and the U.S., and supports commands in Korean and U.S. English. Users in the U.S. and Korea can switch between Korean and English by adjusting Bixby’s language settings.

Bixby’s understanding of natural language is what allows it to learn dialects. We’ve taught Bixby various dialects’ distinct intonations, vocabulary and grammatical structures, and we’re currently working on providing support for more.

Q. What are Quick Commands?

Bixby’s Quick Commands allow you to issue multi-step, complicated requests with convenient keywords.

With Quick Commands, users can replace a long request, such as “Track my run using the Samsung Health app,” with a short, simple command, such as “Run.” These shortcuts allow you to interact more seamlessly with your phone. Quick Commands may be accessed under Bixby Home’s “My Bixby” menu.

Q. Will using Bixby eat up my mobile data, and is it possible to use it overseas?

Bixby only utilizes your mobile data when listening to a command, not before or after. As a result, the length of the command ultimately determines the amount of mobile data used.

If Bixby Voice is activated and you’re using a licensed SIM card, it’s possible to use the interface even when you’re overseas.2
Actual range of use may vary depending on the apps you’re using.

Q. How is Reminder different from my device’s clock or calendar app?

Reminder lets users do much more than simply log an appointment or create an alarm.

The function utilizes Bixby’s voice support and contextual awareness to allow users to set smart reminders for specified times, places or circumstances.

Reminder is also integrated into other apps. You can use Reminder to save webpage URLs in the Samsung Internet app, as well as messages that you’d like to get back to later in the Messages app. You can also pin reminders to your device’s Always On Display to make them visible at all times, and access your collected reminders via your device’s edge panel.

Q. What is Bixby Home, and how does it cater to users’ individual needs?

Bixby Home serves as a gateway to Bixby’s various functions and presents your most contextually relevant apps and services on a single screen, so the content you care about is just a swipe away.

Bixby learns your routine and serves up the information you need when you need it. It looks for patterns in your app usage to predict what you might be looking for, and when you’re most likely to look for it. The more you use your smartphone, the more relevant Bixby’s content suggestions will become.

Bixby Home will automatically populate based on your actions, but you can also customize the experience to best suit your needs. You also have the options to pin your favorite cards to the top of your Home page for easy reference, and hide any cards that you no longer wish to see.
