Samsung Electronics CEO BK Yoon is delivering a speech at the Government Summit in UAE.

The President and CEO of Samsung Electronics, BK Yoon, delivered a speech at the Government Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Feb 9, outlining Samsung Electronics’ innovation strategy and its vision for the future.

The Summit convenes thousands of the world’s foremost leaders in the public sector to share and discuss best practices from around the world. As a guest speaker to the Summit, Mr. Yoon was invited to inspire the innovation of each participating government.

“We don’t see things as challenges,” Mr. Yoon said. “We see them as opportunities, and we never stop innovating. Our innovation is rooted in a very purposeful approach based on product, process and people. To create the best products, we need the best process, and to create the best process, we need the best people.”

Three Pillar Approach to Innovation

Mr. Yoon showed how the three pillars—Product, Process and People—have shaped the history of Samsung Electronics’ innovation.

Product: With its innovative smartphones, Samsung delivered an unprecedented mobile experience to consumers around the world. Samsung also challenged conventional thinking with LED TVs that completely changed old assumptions of how TVs should be built. And with the premium refrigerator, Samsung successfully reworked the basic blueprint for building a refrigerator, offering consumers ultimate freshness for healthier living in the comfort of their own kitchen.

Process: Clear standards and unified processes are critical to operating a global company like Samsung. For instance, through a standardized operating system, Samsung efficiently manages the flow of parts and products and stays close to its partners across the entire value chain.

People: With a ‘people first’ mindset, Samsung supports and nurtures its employees, helping them to reach their full potential. For example, Samsung’s Regional Specialist Program provides employees with opportunities to experience and understand local markets, while initiatives like the Global Strategy Group functions as an internal think tank, attracting the most talented MBA graduates from around the world to the company’s headquarters.

Government Cooperation to Bring the Internet of Things Faster to Reality

During his presentation, Mr. Yoon outlined four mega trends: mobility, urbanization, aging and new threats like climate change that are changing everything—from how we live and work to how we organize societies and governments.

Mr. Yoon explained that technology is key to dealing with these mega-trends, especially with the rapidly emerging concept of the Internet of Things (IoT). By embedding sensors, smart components, and enhanced connectivity into everyday objects, and using Big Data analytics to understand and act on the information they generate, IoT holds infinite possibilities to provide solutions that make our lives healthier, and more comfortable and secure.

“In order for IoT to succeed, it must be developed around people’s needs, and it must be built on an open ecosystem,” Mr. Yoon said. “Above all, the support from governments, and collaboration among governments and the private sector is critical to unlocking the infinite possibilities of the IoT.”

Strengthening Collaboration with the Arab World in B2B

Mr. Yoon emphasized that “Korea and the UAE have both built something great out of almost nothing through innovation,” adding, “we at Samsung also share the same passion for innovation. We have been greatly inspired by the Dubai government’s determination to innovate and its strong imagination.”

Samsung will continue to build stronger relationships with the Arab World by strengthening its B2B business such as the System Air Conditioning, as well as actively expand its IoT business in the region as a future growth engine.

About the Government Summit

This year’s Government Summit is scheduled from February 9 to February 11 in Dubai under the theme of “Shaping Future Government,” and will focus on enhancing the performance of government services through innovation.

The 3rd annual Government Summit is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The summit gathers more than 3,000 government officials, business leaders and thought leadership from across the world to discuss the developments and future trends in government, and provides a platform to exchange knowledge and experience between the public and private sector.

BK Yoon, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics, announced that openness and collaboration across industries is needed for the Internet of Things to succeed at the opening keynote speech at 2015 CES.

The Internet of Things needs openness and industry collaboration

to succeed, says Samsung Electronics CEO BK Yoon

Samsung outlines its Internet of Things roadmap, as Mr. Yoon opens

2015 CES with a keynote on IoT’s infinite possibilities

The President and CEO of Samsung Electronics, BK Yoon, delivered the opening keynote speech at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), calling for greater openness and collaboration across industries to unlock the infinite possibilities of the Internet of Things (IoT).

“The Internet of Things has the potential to transform our society, economy and how we live our lives,” said Mr. Yoon. “It is our job to pull together — as an industry, and across different sectors — to make true on the promise of the Internet of Things.”

Mr. Yoon also emphasized that IoT must center on people and fit into their lifestyles, adding, “The Internet of Things is not about ‘things.’ Instead, it is about people. Each person is at the center of their own technology universe, and the IoT universe will constantly adapt and change shape as people move through their world.”

As part of Samsung’s commitment to realizing the IoT era, Mr. Yoon announced a timetable for making Samsung technology IoT-enabled. By 2017, all Samsung televisions will be IoT devices, and in five years all Samsung hardware will be IoT-ready, further accelerating the expansion of IoT devices available in the market.

He also emphasized the importance of developers in building IoT and announced that Samsung will invest more than USD 100 million in its developer community in 2015.

Expanding IoT Devices and Components

In the IoT era, sensors become even more advanced and precise, and key components become ever more compact and highly energy efficient.

Mr. Yoon described Samsung’s advanced sensors, which are precise enough to understand a person’s surrounding environment and offer the right solution or service. For example, Samsung is developing a new three-dimensional range sensor that can detect the tiniest movements.

The company is also working on chips, such as the embedded package on package (ePOP) and the Bio-Processor, which are energy-efficient and compact enough to go into a wide range of devices, especially wearables and mobile devices.

“Expanding the devices in the IoT ecosystem and the components that power them is the first step in fulfilling the promise of the Internet of Things,” said Mr. Yoon. “Samsung already has a broad range of IoT devices. Last year, Samsung delivered more than 665 million products, and this number is set to increase. We have already begun to unlock the value hidden in connected devices and all the everyday objects around us.”

Creating an Open Ecosystem

In addition to IoT devices and components, Mr. Yoon emphasized the importance of openness in bringing IoT to life. Joining Mr. Yoon on stage, SmartThings CEO Alex Hawkinson underscored Samsung’s vision for an open infrastructure.

“For the Internet of Things to be a success, it has to be open,” said Hawkinson. “Any device, from any platform, must be able to connect and communicate with one another. We’ve worked hard to accomplish this, and are committed to putting users first, giving them the most choice and freedom possible. The SmartThings ecosystem is now compatible with more devices than any other platform.”

Supporting the Developer Community

Samsung deeply values the role of developers and their contributions, and firmly believe that developers will play a key role in realizing the IoT era

“We at Samsung are committed to supporting the developer community,” said Mr. Yoon. “Only together can we shape this better future.”

As part of this commitment, Mr. Yoon announced that Samsung would invest more than USD 100 million to support its developer community in 2015 by strengthening its accelerator programs and further expanding its international developer events.

Collaborating Across Industries

Samsung believes that IoT will have far-reaching impact, much more so than the consumer electronics industry has so far, as it will touch every aspect of people’s lives and revolutionize every industry. For IoT to succeed, companies across all industries will have to collaborate to build the necessary infrastructure and develop the many tailored IoT services that can meet the needs of consumers.

“I know in my heart that neither one single company nor one industry alone can deliver the benefits of the Internet of Things,” said Mr. Yoon. “To create this IoT universe, we have to see the potential of the Internet of Things across all kinds of industries. Only if we work together can we improve people’s lives.”
