ISOCELL HP5 is the smallest 200 mega-pixel image sensor for mobile devices. The sensor is only half the size of a penny and packs 200 million of the industry’s tiniest 0.5㎛ sized pixels, each just 1/100th the width of a strand of human hair. Leveraging Samsung’s cutting-edge proprietary pixel technology, the ISOCELL HP5 achieves superb light absorption and signal conversion, overcoming challenges once thought impossible at this scale. The 0.5㎛ sized pixel allows the 200MP sensor to fit in 1/1.56” optical format, a format typically used for 50MP sensors. T7 Resurrected Portable Solid State Drive (PSSD) features a unique body case design crafted from 100% recycled aluminum certified by TÜV Rheinland.⁶ By eliminating the coloring process, the product showcases the natural luster of aluminum while minimizing chemical use and streamlining its manufacturing process. SmartThings Energy – Recognized in the Smart Home category, SmartThings Energy lets users take more control of their carbon footprints and lower their monthly energy bills. It offers AI Energy Mode, which monitors the energy usage of connected appliances and automatically optimizes their operation to reduce consumption, and the new Carbon Intensity Awareness feature, which provides insight into local energy production and carbon intensity. Less Microfiber Filter – Earning recognition in the Sustainability category, the Less Microfiber Filter is an external washing machine filter that can reduce the release of microfibers during laundry cycles. Running a washing machine four times per week with the filter can reduce the amount of microfibers equivalent to eight 500ml plastic bottles per year.¹ With built-in Wi-Fi, users can check the filter’s status on the SmartThings app and even receive alerts for cleaning or replacement.

Exynos Connect U100 – Recognized in the Embedded Technologies category, Samsung’s Exynos Connect U100 is an ultra-wideband (UWB) solution that provides highly accurate distance and location information for mobile, automotive and IoT devices.

Utilizing both time of arrival (ToA) and 3D angle of arrival (AoA) measurements, the Exynos Connect U100 achieves single-digit centimeter accuracy and under five degree precision. This makes it particularly suitable for tracking locations in challenging indoor environments as well as for AR and VR applications that require precise real-time tracking of moving people.

C-Lab Inside: Four In-House Projects Taking on Lifestyle, the Metaverse and More

Samsung has been operating its in-house startup fostering program C-Lab Inside since 2012 in order to lead the development of innovative technologies based on creative ideas and the spirit of stepping up to challenges. Out of the projects being fostered within the company, the ones on show at CES this year have been particularly recognized for their innovation, global marketability and overall completeness.

▲ Meta-Running, a coaching platform on the metaverse that helps users run with proper posture, displays the user’s running position in real-time alongside footage of a professional runner adopting the correct posture, helping users prevent injury.

“Most injuries sustained while running come from incorrect posture,” said Donghoon Kang, Creative Leader of Meta-Running, one of the in-house startups on show garnering a lot of attention from visitors to the exhibition. “We feel that harnessing the metaverse and AI technologies can help people run in a healthier and safer manner,” elaborated Kang on where the inspiration came from for this metaverse-powered running project.

Meta-Running can be used with just a mobile device, removing the need for an additional sensor. When a user actually runs, AI technologies will utilize the mobile device’s camera to recognize the user’s body, representing their movements via an avatar in the metaverse. The technologies then analyze their posture and immediately inform them of any changes they should make. Following their run, the user is then provided with a summary of their running postures across each part of their body, as well as a guide on how to correct any wrong posture. As a result, users can work on addressing their posture, muscle strength and any over-pacing issues — three of the main causes of injuries in running.

“We’ve been working day and night to participate in CES, and have also achieved the great accomplishment of applying for a Class A-level patent,” said Kang. “We’ve earned the confidence to say that our efforts have not been in vain and that our ideas are competitive enough.”

C-Lab Outside is a startup incubating program that was launched following the success of the C-Lab Inside program in order to expand the operational knowledge gained to those outside of the company and to vitalize the startup ecosystem. The startups chosen for the C-Lab Outside program receive a customized incubation program which includes project support funds, digital marketing assistance, financial consulting and more.

At CES 2023, the company has been drawing visitors’ attention with its presentations of its AI writing practicing software, Wrtn Training, which lets users transform their thoughts into writing. “I witnessed many students struggle with expressing their thoughts in writing while I and my team members were participating in an education volunteering program at Korea Scholar’s Conference for Youth (KSCY),” said Seyoung Lee, Co-Founder of Wrtn Technologies. “We developed this AI-based writing practice software after much consideration into how we can make it easier for such individuals to improve their writing skills with the help of technology.”

One of the key factors that inspired the development of Wrtn Technologies has been the emergence of AI and the shift in the definition of creativity that has accompanied it. “Confluent services that combine AI with education are set to become even more important,” noted Lee. “What makes me happy is that Wrtn Technologies has been the first in the Generative AI field following these recent technological changes to receive a CES Innovation Award. Ever since we were selected by C-Lab Outside, we have been able to grow fast, thanks in particular to the commercialization support and marketing assistance we received from the program.”

The electronic eye being displayed by startup CELLICO is another highlight of the exhibition. An electronic eye is a device that helps patients suffering from visual impairment to recover their vision across all stages of retinal disease. “In the case of those who have lost their vision due to retinal disease, the movement of their iris, which can be likened to the aperture in cameras, does not function properly,” explained Jeongseok Kim, CEO of CELLICO. “With our augmented reality (AR) glasses, equipped with a camera capable of capturing images and then projecting them to the user through video processing with a consistent amount of light for optimal reception, users get the most out of their time spent both indoors and outdoors.”

CELLICO’s CES Innovation Award-winning electronic eye technology has already registered a U.S. patent and is currently awaiting the results of review applications to China and Europe. “Honestly, I just about screamed with joy when we were notified that we had won our first CES Innovation Award,” said Kim. “We would like to make the AR-based electronic eye device that we are developing now into a true success in order to help even more visually-impaired people.”

C-Lab Outside: Startups Showcasing Robots, AI and More To Receive CES Spotlight

Created in October 2018, C-Lab Outside is a startup acceleration program launched to invigorate the startup ecosystem in Korea. Startups enrolled in the C-Lab Outside program are provided with office workspaces, expert mentoring from Samsung employees and digital marketing & financial consulting. Additional support includes potential partnerships with Samsung Electronics and opportunities to participate in influential IT exhibitions such as CES and KES (Korea Electronics Show).

For the past year, Samsung, the Daegu Center and the Gyeong-buk Center for Creative Economy & Innovation, which are parts of C-Lab Outside, have been incubating these startups to develop their technology and be ready to meet the world at CES 2023. The eight chosen startups are:

C-Lab Startups Bring Record-Breaking 29 Wins of the CES 2023 Innovation Awards

In November 2022, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announced the winners of the CES 2023 Innovation Awards across 28 product categories, including Best of Innovation. Projects from the C-Lab startups received two Best of Innovation Awards, and 27 were named Innovation Awards Honorees. As a result, C-Lab took home 22 Innovation Awards in 2022 and seven more in 2023 for their standout technologies.

Samsung Electronics is sharing its knowledge of how to win the CES Innovation Award and enter the global market.

“It is a great pleasure to see that C-Lab startups have proven their technological prowess on the global stage, as evidenced by the most Innovation Awards ever at CES,” said Hark Kyu Park, President and Chief Financial Officer at Samsung Electronics. “We hope that C-Lab startups will be able to more actively target the global market and show the excellence of Korean startups.”

Notably, Dot Inc., which develops devices and software for the visually impaired, was named a CES 2023 Best of Innovation Award winner in the Accessibility category and also named two CES Innovation Awards Honorees. Verses, which developed the Meta Music System for streaming, was named a CES 2023 Best of Innovation Award winner in the Streaming category.

Seven of the eight startups to exhibit in the C-Lab booth — NEUBILITY, 40FY, NdotLight, CELLICO, Plask, Catius, Wrtn Technologies — won Innovation Awards.

Additionally, seven spun-off startups from C-Lab Inside and 11 former C-Lab Outside startups won two Best of Innovation Awards and 20 Innovation Awards.

Samsung Has Achieved Its Goal of Nurturing 500 Startups and Projects Over Five Years

In 2018, Samsung Electronics announced that it would accelerate 300 Korean startups through C-Lab Outside and 200 projects through C-Lab Inside over a five-year period. The company has nurtured a total of 506 startups and projects (304 from C-Lab Outside and 202 from C-Lab Inside) so far.

Samsung recently established C-Lab Family, a unique professional network through which alumni startups can continue to co-operate with Samsung even after graduating from C-Lab Outside or spun-off from C-Lab. It also created C-Lab Scale-Up Committee and plans to gradually expand partnerships and investments for C-Lab Family in the future.

Samsung W920+RF 6550 Next-gen Enhancement for Wearables — Recognized in the Wearable Technologies category, Samsung’s Exynos W920 System on a Chip (SoC) and Exynos RF 6550 connectivity solution is a next-generation tandem offering that adds a new dimension to wearable devices. The Exynos W920 processor, built on a 5-nanometer (nm) Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) process node, includes an LTE modem and provides the performance demanded by next-generation wearable devices with a powerful GPU and dual-core CPU. The companion RF 6550 chip, built on a 28nm process, integrates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GNSS connectivity with the utmost reliability into the Exynos W920 design.

Hygienic Cleaning Performance

The Bespoke Jet features the All-in-One Clean Station, which keeps a user’s space hygienic while cleaning. When docked, the All-in-One Clean Station is able to empty its dustbin automatically without any fine dust particles escaping³ thanks to Samsung’s unique Air Pulse technology. It also automatically charges the Bespoke Jet vacuum cleaner at the same time.

A 99.999 percent⁴ Multi-Layered Filtration System makes sure that only clean air is released from the Bespoke Jet during cleaning. As air is sucked in, the main cyclone separates large dust particles, which are then picked up in a metal mesh grille filter. A micro filter then catches fine dust particles, and finally, a fine dust filter traps micro dust⁵ that can easily escape. All the parts and filters are washable, so they can be kept hygienically clean.

Powerful Cleaning in a Lightweight Design

Whether it is being used on hard floors or carpets, the Bespoke Jet provides maximum suction to get the job done efficiently. The on-board Samsung Digital Inverter Motor is 47 percent lighter than the Jet90’s motor⁶ and generates up to 210W⁷ of suction power.

With its Jet Cyclone, you can enjoy cleaner air and powerful suction. Featuring a high-efficiency, multi-cyclone structure, the Jet Cyclone creates an optimal air path to reduce air resistance and minimize the loss of suction to hygienically trap fine dust particles sucked into the vacuum cleaner.

The handheld body of the Bespoke Jet weighs just 1.44kg, light enough to maneuver and clean the entire house, so you can easily clean the surfaces of chairs and sofas, on top of cabinets and tables, the length of window blinds, the underside of appliances and even up the stairs.

Cleaning Made Convenient

The Bespoke Jet features a convenient LCD Digital Display with support for 28 languages.⁸ This display gives you all the information you need at a glance including your suction level settings and remaining battery time. It also provides information about any problems, such as clogging, objects stuck in the brush, or missing filters, and provides a guide to help you fix the problem.

The Bespoke Jet also has a large capacity battery, despite its high specification features. It can run for up to an hour⁹ and even when that time’s up, you can easily swap in a spare battery¹⁰ to extend your cleaning time by up to two hours. Samsung’s unique technology also ensures that it retains 70 percent of its original performance throughout up to 500 cycles.¹¹

To help you clean even hard floors easily, the Bespoke Jet also comes with an upgraded Spray Spinning Sweeper.¹² Featuring dual spinning wet pads that rotate for up to 100 minutes,¹³ it delivers stable, effective cleaning for hard floors. The upgraded Spray Spinning Sweeper also features an easy-to-maintain 150ml water tank, so you can manually spray more water for a more convenient experience. Brush and accessory options may vary by region.¹⁴

At the 2019 Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Electronics Challenge awards ceremony, hosted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Samsung received the Champion and Tier Awards, and at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovation Awards, Samsung was recognized as this year’s winner for promoting efficient resource use.

A Winning Commitment to a Circular Economy

The SMM Electronics Challenge, hosted since 2014, is the EPA’s annual awards ceremony recognizing participants for their commitment to sustainable materials management and the responsible recycling, honoring those companies who, in the US, voluntarily engage in recycling programs. Honors are awarded in two categories, the Champion Award for products, non-products and new technologies that are harnessed in environmentally conscious ways, and the Tier Award for recycling activities. This year, Samsung won awards in both categories, and on January 8, several leading Samsung figures attended the SMM Electronics Challenge awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

In the Champion Award category, Samsung received its third Cutting-Edge Award since the award’s creation in 2016, which recognizes participants for pioneering ideas in electronics sustainability. The company was recognized for the Galaxy Upcycling project, a project dedicated to reusing end-of-life mobile phones for both environmental protection and societal gain.

The award-winning Galaxy Upcycling project transforms obsolete mobile phones no longer in use into internet-of-things (IoT) devices with the power to benefit underserved communities; since 2017, the project has, in partnership with Korean medical researchers, harnessed recycled smartphone devices for the development of portable eye examination equipment. In 2017, the project won the SMM Cutting-Edge Award for the first time, and last year supplied 90 portable ophthalmoscopes for use in Vietnam, benefitting the lives and vision of around 14,000 residents.

In the Tier Award category, Samsung has, for the sixth year in a row, been awarded Gold, an honor bestowed upon only those companies that send at least 96% of all used electronics to certified third-party recyclers. Samsung was recognized for collecting and recycling 60,000 tons of waste electronics in 2018, along with once again only making contracts with only those vendors certified by e-Stewards, a third-party certification management program for electronics recyclers. Furthermore, the company actively participates in eCycling, a voluntary e-waste collection program for companies organized by the CTA (Consumer Technology Association).

Innovating Sustainability

At this year’s CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, Samsung received a wide range of honors at the CES Innovation Awards, with products and services from display technologies to mobile devices awarded for standing out in the industry as leading, innovative solutions. Among these, Samsung’s The Serif Eco-Packaging design has been recognized for promoting the efficient use of resources.

The Eco-Packaging design allows consumers to upcycle the packaging of a product into small, versatile pieces of furniture. Once they have assembled their devices, consumers can repurpose the thick corrugated cardboard packaging into small tables or shelves, guided by manuals available by scanning a QR code on the box. This packaging is to be rolled out with Samsung’s TV line The Serif within the first half of 2020.

Also, ahead of this year’s CES, Samsung on January 4 hosted an e-waste collection event where attendees could dispose of their obsolete electronics, free of charge. Samsung has been hosting this e-waste recycling event annually since 2017.

Samsung Electronics today announced the release of its latest external storage device – the Portable Solid State Drive (SSD) T7 Touch – which combines sleek, compact design with the fastest transfer speeds currently available based on the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard. The new device also elevates data protection to the next level with an additional hardware security measure in the form of a built-in fingerprint sensor.

“Consumers who are constantly on the go between work, play and passion projects want to be able to securely carry their content with them,” said Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Brand Product Biz Team, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “Now their data is secure thanks to the fingerprint recognition functionality incorporated into the product, which delivers industry-leading transfer speeds in a compact form factor.”

Designed for both professional and casual users, Samsung’s T7 Touch provides enough capacity to securely store large numbers of pictures, games or 4K/8K videos whether on a PC, tablet, smartphone or game console¹, as well as the durability to take their content with them².

The T7 Touch offers a significant speed upgrade over previous storage solutions. With a read speed of 1,050MB/s and a write speed of 1,000MB/s³, it is approximately twice as fast as its predecessor, the T5, and up to 9.5 times faster than external HDDs⁴. Moreover, the device can reach its maximum speed when used with the NVMe interface.

For an added layer of security, the T7 Touch brings the first built-in fingerprint scanner to Samsung SSDs on top of password protection and AES 256-bit hardware encryption. It also features a ‘Motion LED’, which allows the user to determine the status of the device simply with a single glance. Despite the considerable speed boost, hardware additions and solid metal (aluminum) casing, the new SSD still weighs in at a light 58 grams. The innovative nature of Samsung’s T7 Touch has been recognized at the CES 2020 Innovation Awards.

Available in a black or silver finish, the T7 Touch is offered in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes, making it suitable for a wide range of use cases. To ensure reliable connectivity wherever the users may be, the drive comes with a USB Type-C-to-C cable and a USB Type-C-to-A cable, and is compatible with Windows, Mac and Android operating systems. The T7 Touch also includes a three-year limited warranty with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) of $129.99 for the 500GB, $229.99 for the 1TB and $399.99 for the 2TB.

Samsung’s memory solutions were also honored with a number of awards. This year’s winners include the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Touch, an external storage drive featuring significantly enhanced speed and security; the Samsung SSD 980 PRO, a consumer SSD solution that’s optimized for high-end PCs; and the PM1733 30.72TB PCle Gen4 NVMe SSD, the industry’s fastest and largest capacity storage drive, developed for next-generation datacenters and enterprise server systems.

QuickDrive reduces washing time by half without compromising washing performance, ensuring a thorough yet gentle clean. Unlike conventional washing machines that move clothes from top to bottom, QuickDrive has a main drum and a back plate that rotate independently, moving clothes dynamically around the drum in multiple directions, resulting in a full clean.

The performance of QuickDrive is guaranteed with over 150 durability and functionality tests. This attention to detail can be observed in Samsung’s quality assurance campaign, “From Lab to Life,” which demonstrates how the tests in the laboratory aid product longevity and efficiency in the home. The array of tests includes a “heat test,” which evaluates the components’ abilities to withstand extreme temperatures and a “slam test,” which repeatedly slams the door 20,000 times to ensure it can withstand frequent usage. Consumers have responded positively to the campaign, noting that it offers real information on machine testing, a topic that other campaigns in this category rarely touch upon.

Award-winning Appliances

As Samsung remains committed to innovation and quality assurance, the company has received recognition from several awarding bodies. Earlier this year, Samsung was awarded the title ‘Large Appliance Brand of the Year’ by a leading consumer association in the U.K. In France, QuickDrive won the Best Washing Machine award, presented by tech and electronics magazine, Les Numériques. The washing machine’s leadership in laundry innovation was also noted earlier this year at the CES Innovation Awards. Trusted Reviews said they could barely praise QuickDrive enough, and that QuickDrive was the washing machine to beat thanks to its incredibly low running costs and great cleaning performance.

QuickDrive contributed to Samsung’s achieving the highest growth among the top 10  brands in the European washing machine market in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2017. In addition, since the washing machine’s launch in Southeast Asia earlier in 2018, Samsung’s premium washing machine sales have increased by double-digits compared to the previous year in the Southeast Asian market.
