At CES 2017, Samsung Electronics will unveil its new CH711 Quantum Dot curved monitor, demonstrating its continued leadership of the entertainment visual display market.

“Today’s multimedia consumers, quite rightly, have high expectations and demand a truly cutting edge, totally immersive experience that realizes the full potential of whatever they are playing or watching,” said Seoggi Kim, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business. “This year’s line-up of curved Quantum Dot monitors offers brilliant design, richer color and deeper contrast than ever before. We can’t wait to share them with the world at CES 2017 in Las Vegas.”

A Colorful, Curved Entertainment Experience

Samsung’s new CH711 Quantum Dot curved monitor is designed with gamers in mind. Available in 27- and 31.5-inch variations, and scheduled for an early 2017 commercial release, the CH711 delivers vivid, visually stunning picture quality, regardless of the content being enjoyed.

Featuring 1,800R curvature and an ultrawide 178-degree viewing angle, the CH711 makes content clearly visible wherever you may be in a room. Its ergonomic design also enables viewers to adjust the monitor’s horizontal and vertical positioning for optimal comfort. When combined with nearly 125 percent sRGB color coverage and 2,560 x 1,440 WQHD resolution, the CH711 sets a new standard for detailed color appearance at any distance.

The CH711’s sleek, sophisticated 360-degree design complements any desktop or décor. Its clean, white chassis features a gorgeous three-sided Boundless design, and neatly hides its power and HDMI cables out of sight inside the stand’s neck.

The Quantum Dot Monitor Evolution

Released commercially in the U.S. in December 2016, Samsung’s pioneering CFG70 and CF791 Quantum Dot curved monitors will also make their debut at CES this week.

Designed specifically for professional and hardcore gamers, the 24- and 27-inch CFG70 curved monitors combine the visual refinement of Samsung’s Quantum Dot picture technology with the comfortable, ultrawide view of its curved monitors to create the ultimate gaming experience. The CFG70 offers a host of gamer-friendly features, such as the ‘Gaming UX’ user interface, as well as advanced calibration options to optimize picture presentation for any of the FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS game genres.

Featuring 1,500R curvature and an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio, the CF791 Quantum Dot curved monitor performs just as well when using for work, delivering unparalleled clarity and fine detail. Using Picture-by-Picture (PBP) technology, customers can load content from any connected HDMI or DP input source and position it anywhere on the screen. A complementary Picture-in-Picture (PIP) function also allows consumers to shrink and place content anywhere on the screen without losing resolution or visual quality. An integrated height-adjustable stand also delivers ergonomic comfort and makes the CF791 ideal for any workstation or office environment.

Game On

To celebrate the launch of its newest monitors, Samsung will offer CES 2017 attendees a first-hand opportunity to enjoy some friendly competition at the company’s interactive gaming zone. Samsung’s booth will include interactive stations where visitors can play several of today’s top video game titles on its CFG70 Quantum Dot curved gaming monitors. There will also be supporting large-format SMART LED signage to livestream the competition – and demonstrate the monitors’ excellent visual presentation to the wider CES audience.

The SH850 monitors also feature a height-adjustable stand and pivot, with tilt and swivel capabilities for optimal viewing comfort.

CH711 will be exhibited at Samsung Electronics’ booth (#15006 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center) along with the recently launched CFG70 and CF791 Quantum Dot display monitors.

Samsung’s first dedicated gaming monitor – the curved, Quantum dot CFG70 – reflects its proven expertise in display technologies and features standout specs. Senior Engineer Hoseong Seo and Marketing Assistant Manager Hyang Go of Samsung’s Visual Display team explain how their team achieved the ultra-fast 1ms mark in a curved monitor, and how the technology manages to deliver smoother visuals and a more immersive gaming experience.

Senior Engineer Hoseong Seo (left) and Marketing Assistant Manager Hyang Go

Q. The type of LCD panel used in a gaming monitor is key in determining how it displays. How did you select the right one for the CFG70?

Hoseong Seo: Gaming monitors feature different types of LCD panels, namely Twisted Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), and In-Plane Switching (IPS) or Plane to Line Switching (PLS). But to meet our requirements for image quality and response time, there was really only one answer.

The CFG70 features a VA panel, which provides a high contrast range, rich color and a wide viewing angle. We chose a VA not only because they’re the optimal panels for curved monitors, which are scientifically proven to be more visually comfortable, but also because it integrated perfectly with our Quantum dot technology, allowing us to deliver supreme image quality.

Most VA panels feature an MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time – the standard for measuring the “motion blur” of rapidly moving objects in a sequence of images) of between 4 and 6 milliseconds. The CFG70’s, however, is just 1ms.

Q. What steps did you take to achieve that 1-millisecond mark?

Hoseong Seo: The difference is in the CFG70’s impulsive scanning technology. With older, CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors, when a scene changes, the screen will very quickly turn off and back on. The human eye compensates for the gap, and the user sees seamless visuals without motion blur. LCD monitors, on the other hand, do not turn off when a scene changes, which makes them susceptible to motion-blur issues.

Impulsive scanning technology reduces motion blur by regulating a monitor’s backlight between each scene. The conventional method to address this issue is to control the backlight from the center of the screen, but this may allow motion blur to remain in the upper and lower areas.

The CFG70’s backlights are divided into four sections that synchronize with image frames to eliminate motion blur across its screen.

The CFG70 features advanced “four-channel” impulsive scanning technology, which is more precise. It creates a cleaner visual experience by dividing the screen into four sections to remove motion blur more efficiently, and Samsung was the first to apply it to create a 1ms monitor.

Q. How did you anticipate gamers would respond to the CFG70’s advanced technology?

Hyang Go: Well, while it’s true that gamers greatly value innovation in their visual displays, not all will ultimately choose to buy the products with the most advanced technologies. One reason for this is simply because not everyone sees the difference.

We believe that the CFG70 curved gaming monitor’s strengths are very clear, however, and we wanted to give gamers an opportunity to see for themselves. So we invited some gamers to participate in a blind test comparing the visuals produced by its 1ms response time and impulsive scanning technology with those of competing gaming monitors.

Ten out of the 11 participants deemed the CFG70 superior, which is a testament to our development team’s hard work. One particularly perceptive participant even pointed out motion blur at the top and bottom of one of the other monitors’ screens, which proves the impulsive scanning technology’s effectiveness.

Q. How do you believe the CFG70 will ultimately enrich the gaming experience?

Hoseong Seo: Most gamers will carefully examine a number of different specs when choosing a monitor. Though other monitors may match the CFG70’s specs, we believe users of the CFG70 will see a real difference in visual performance.

In the end, the CFG70’s response time, along with its Quantum dot color and four-channel impulsive scanning technology, will allow users to enjoy a much more realistic and visually immersive gaming experience than they’d get with other gaming monitors on the market today.

Now more than ever, PC gamers value top-quality displays that add clear, responsive visuals to their gaming experience. Samsung’s new CFG70 curved gaming monitor has proven a hit with hardcore gamers because of its ability to deliver a curved display, rapid response time and vibrant Quantum dot color. Samsung Newsroom interviewed the four developers behind the new display, who discussed its design and innovative features in depth.

The main developers behind the CFG70 gaming monitor (from left): Senior Engineer Sung Duk Cho, Assistant Engineer Yoon Ah Kim, and Senior Engineers Hee Bok Song and Jung Woo Hong of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display team.

Q: Tell us a bit about the CFG70’s response time and the value it brings to the gaming experience.

Hee Bok Song: A gaming monitor’s basic job is to provide smooth graphics without afterimages. We used to measure display response time in terms of panel response, but nowadays we use MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time). The CFG70’s MPRT is one millisecond, which is the fastest in its category. Although there are other monitors that feature a 1ms response time, what makes the CFG70 special is that it is the first to feature a curved display.

The CFG70 features three essential virtues of an ideal gaming monitor: a 1ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate and curved display.

To foster an ideal gaming experience, we incorporated a 144Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync technology. Modern gaming PCs boast high frame rates, and sometimes monitors with lower refresh rates cannot display their graphics properly. However, with FreeSync and a 144Hz refresh rate, the CFG70 provides gamers with smooth, uninterrupted visuals.

Q: What differentiates the CFG70 from other monitors in terms of picture quality?

Jung Woo Hong: The CFG70 is the first monitor equipped with Quantum dot technology. The biggest difference between this and monitors without Quantum dots is in the range of hues that can be reproduced, which indicates how well a particular display can create lifelike, original color.

Common monitors are capable of implementing 72 percent of the PC-standard ‘sRGB’ wide color gamut, and monitors made for professionals measure between 98 and 119 percent. The CFG70, however, can realize 125 percent of this range. Achieving an even and clear high-definition picture on a curved monitor was no easy feat, but we researched relentlessly in order to pull it off.

Q: What were some of your key focuses when designing the monitor’s UX?

The CFG70 includes user-friendly Gaming UX on-screen display (OSD) interface

Sung Duk Cho: Different games require different capabilities in a display. For example, First-Person Shooters (FPS) require smooth visuals for dynamic scene changes and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games (MOBAs) require clearly discernible colors so players can easily recognize their character’s location. Therefore, when we designed the CFG70’s UX, we wanted it to be able to complement a range of different games.

In order to implement the new UX, we installed a high-level graphic engine into the monitor itself. The CFG70’s default game settings were also carefully configured with the input of the Samsung Galaxy pro gaming team as well as other gamers who tested out the monitor firsthand. The result is a highly versatile UX that satisfies both hardcore and typical gamers alike.

The monitor also features ‘Arena Lighting’, which responds to in-game sound effects to bring lifelike lighting to users’ video-game experience. So in a FPS, for example, when a player fires a gun, the lighting responds accordingly. Each spark and blast bathes the player in light, drawing them deeper into the action by creating a more immersive gaming experience.

Q: What was the impetus behind the monitor’s dual-hinge design?

The dual-hinge design and the “Pivot” technology of the CFG70’s stand allows users to position their monitor to their preference.

Yoon Ah Kim: Rapid response time and high-definition visuals are of no use if users cannot comfortably concentrate on their screen. Our research indicates that many gamers find it uncomfortable when their monitor’s position is even slightly off. In fact, many hardcore gamers are sensitive to differences in screen position as small as a half an inch or less.

The engineering process was not easy, but with user convenience as our top priority we managed to achieve a design for the CFG70’s stand that features easily adjustable double joints. Resembling a robot arm, the stand allows users to comfortably adjust their monitor’s position to their preference.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its newest industry-leading gaming monitor. The CFG70 curved monitor, designed specifically for professional gamers, includes enhanced picture quality and player-friendly features for a truly immersive gaming experience. The display was first introduced at the Gamescom 2016 and IFA 2016 conferences.

As the industry’s first curved gaming monitor to feature quantum dot technology, the CFG70 monitor (24- and 27-inch models) expresses brilliant and accurate colors across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum. This added luminance produces a 3,000:1 contrast ratio and amplifies previously-hidden gaming details in both light and dark settings. The monitor also employs an environmentally-safe, cadmium-free design.

“With the introduction of quantum dot technology to our pioneering curved monitors, Samsung offers a look into the future of gaming, along with a level of picture quality like the industry has never seen before,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The CFG70 makes gamers feel as if they are part of the action, and represents Samsung’s most powerful and visually-compelling curved monitor to date.”

Fast Speed and Smooth Game Play

By combining Samsung’s advanced motion blur reduction technology with its VA panel, the CFG70 is the first curved monitor to produce a 1 ms moving picture response time (MPRT). The rapid MPRT rate reduces display transitions between moving and animated objects, and in turn eliminates potential visual distractions.

The CFG70 also leverages integrated AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI functionality to synchronize the screen’s 144 Hz refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics cards. This connectivity minimizes image tearing, input latency and stutter that can disrupt gameplay and escalate visual fatigue.

Optimized Gaming Experience

Samsung has equipped the CFG70 with a range of user-friendly gaming UX that drives more convenient and easily-accessible game management. The CFG70 includes a dedicated gaming interface with an intuitive settings dashboard to better allow gamers to modify and personalize their gameplay settings. Each CFG70 monitor also offers a series of hotkeys on the front and back of the display for users to easily adjust gameplay settings.

To further inspire gamer immersion and bring out the best in even the most complex game designs, including compatibility with the FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS genres, each CFG70 monitor undergoes rigorous pre-shipment factory calibration. This process optimizes various settings, including contrast ratios, black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management. As a result, gamers can enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

Comfortable and Immersive Viewing with the Curved Design

The CFG70’s “Super Arena” design, featuring industry-best 1,800R curvature and a 178-degree ultra-wide viewing angle, is formatted to match the natural curve of the human eye. Complementary sound-interactive LED lighting further creates a lifelike presentation and keeps users focused during the most paramount moments.

Additionally, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) recently named the CFG70 as a recipient of its annual Good Design Awards, which honor technologies that “improve the quality of life, industry and society.” The JDP acknowledged the efficiency and performance of the CFG70’s advanced gaming interface and convenience-driving composition.

As the gaming market continues to enjoy rapid growth worldwide, gamers expect advanced display technologies that can bring out the latest video game features, which is exactly what Samsung’s new CFG70 curved gaming monitor aims to do.

With embedded Quantum dot technology and an ultra-fast responsetime, the company’s first dedicated hardcore gaming monitor allows for a truly optimized gaming experience. Other best-in-class features include interactive LED lighting, an intuitive user dashboard and AMD FreeSync technology.

Fast and Smooth Game Play

The CFG70 is the first curved monitor on the market that provides a 1ms Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT)—the response time that can be recognized by the naked eye—thanks to Samsung’s advanced impulsive scanning technology. This technology synchronizes the LED backlight with the actual image frame, which nearly eliminates motion blur across the entire screen.

This is especially beneficial for gamers who enjoy playing action-packed first person shooter (FPS) and racing games, where superfast scene transitions are especially essential for efficient gameplay.

The CFG70 also provides an industry-leading 144Hz refresh rate (the number of times that a monitor refreshes its displayed image per second) to ensure a seamless and uninterrupted presentation.

Furthermore, the CFG70 lets users take full advantage of AMD’s FreeSync feature, which dynamically synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rate to match the output of the graphic card. As a result, users can enjoy playing games with a smoother, more uniform frame display without tearing or stuttering for a far more fluid gaming experience.

Vivid, Crisp Colors

As one of the first curved Quantum dot monitors (along with Samsung’s CF791), the CFG70 expresses brilliant colors across a 125-percent sRGB spectrum while employing an environmentally-safe, cadmium-free design. This luminance emphasizes a range of otherwise-hidden game details in both light and dark settings, bringing unprecedented visual realism to captivate even the most hardcore gamers.

Thanks to the CFG70’s VA panel, the monitor also boasts a 3000:1 contrast ratio, which means that users can enjoy deeper blacks, more pristine whites and sharper detail. The VA panel also has minimized light leakage, so that darker scenes appear more uniform in low-light environments.

Comfortable and Immersive Viewing

The CFG70 (available in 24- and 27-inch models) provides a distinguished curvature of 1800R, which envelopes users to create the feeling that they’re a part of the game.

Not only does the monitor’s curve allow for a more immersive experience, but it also optimizes viewing comfort. In fact, according to clinical studies, a curved monitor is more effective at reducing eye strain than conventional, flat monitors.

Likewise, Eye Saver Mode improves viewing comfort by reducing harmful blue light emissions, and the CFG70’s Flicker Free function protects users’ eyes from the strain associated with flickering screens.

Optimized Gaming Experience

To further amplify the details of today’s hottest games, each CFG70 monitor undergoes meticulous pre-shipment factory calibration to optimize contrast and color presentation for even the most complex game designs, including compatibility with FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS genres.

This calibration fine-tunes a variety of display settings, including black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management, while ensuring a sharp, brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

For added game management convenience, the CFG70 includes Samsung’s sophisticated yet user-friendly Gaming UX on-screen display (OSD) interface. Gamers can access the interface’s intuitive dashboard to view all essential settings, from response time to refresh rate, at a glance. Users in turn can adjust gameplay settings easily through shortcut hot keys located on the front and back of the monitor.

The CFG70 also incorporates Arena Lighting which aligns the monitor’s 1800R curvature with sound interactive LED lighting, located at the bottom of the display. These lights become more vivid as the game’s sound increases, keeping users focused during the most paramount moments, all the while enhancing the thrill of victory.

Additionally, the CFG70 comes with a dual-hinge stand that enables players to adjust the height of the monitor freely. Its innovative ball-and-joint mechanism allows the neck to seamlessly tilt, rotate and pivot—all without the base having to be moved. It is VESA supported, and boasts a DP and two HDMI ports.

Meet the League of Legends players of the Galaxy team as they talk about their experiences with the Samsung Curved Gaming Monitor!

In demonstrating the latest innovations across its curved gaming monitor portfolio, Samsung Electronics will reinforce its leadership in the interactive gameplay space at the Gamescom 2016 conference. Scheduled to take place August 17-21, 2016 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany and billed as “the world’s largest computer and video game event,” Gamescom 2016 is expected to bring together more than 345,000 gamers, media, developers and retailers.

In line with the event’s “Heroes in New Dimensions” theme, Samsung (booths A070 and B070 in Hall 10.1 and booth A055-A in Hall 09.1) will offer players a look at the future of virtual competition with its new CFG70 curved gaming monitor. The CFG70 (24-inch model) combines crystal-clear picture quality with a range of user-friendly features to create an immersive, lifelike environment designed to impress even the most hardcore gamers.

“As developers incorporate advanced features into their newest titles, dedicated video game consumers need high-quality displays to amplify these enhancements and make them feel as if they are part of the game,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The CFG70 represents the latest evolution of our pioneering gaming monitor technology, and adds unparalleled presentation and realism to the gaming experience. At Gamescom 2016, we invite attendees to see first-hand how our curved displays bring today’s most popular video game titles to life.”

A Broader Gameplay Arena

The CFG70 monitor’s “Super Arena” design invites gamers to experience the thrill of victory from multiple perspectives. Featuring 1800R curvature (indicating a curvature radius of 1,800 mm.) and a uniform 178-degree wide viewing angle, the CFG70 envelops players across the entire screen and brings previously hidden colors and game details to life. Integrated sound interactive LED lighting complements this enhanced picture presentation and further fosters gamer immersion.

Gamers also benefit from the CFG70’s continuity features that ensure uninterrupted interaction. The CFG70 is the industry’s first gaming monitor to offer 1m/s moving picture response time, providing a consistent, real-time display across the entire screen. A 144 Hz refresh rate additionally drives seamless transitions as games progress.

An Intuitive Interface

For added game management convenience, Samsung has equipped the CFG70 monitor with its user-friendly Gaming UX OSD interface. During competition, gamers can view and adjust all essential settings – ranging from response time to refresh rate – through a single-source on-screen dashboard. A series of easily-accessible shortcut hot keys located on the front and back of the monitor give gamers even more options to quickly update frequently-used gameplay parameters.

Longer and More Comfortable Competition

Samsung’s latest curved gaming monitor additionally is designed to reduce visual fatigue and encourage longer gameplay sessions. The CFG70’s flicker-free technology prevents strenuous display inconsistencies, and a complementary Eye Saver Mode feature safeguards users from harmful blue light emissions. To further reduce input latency, stutter and lag, and generate a consistent picture, the new monitor’s embedded AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI® functionality synchronizes screen refresh rates with users’ AMD graphics cards.

Outside of its own Gamescom 2016 booth, several of Samsung’s partners also will feature its curved gaming monitors at their show floor stations, including:

Bethesda Softworks (booths A051 and B050 in Hall 08.1 )

Crytek (booths B011 and C012 in Hall 02.1)

ESL Gaming/Turtle Entertainment (booths A050-A053 in Hall 09.1)

Ubisoft (multiple booths in Hall 06.1)

Xbox (also demonstrating Samsung’s UHD monitors at its booth in Hall 8)
