Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today held the first Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem (SAFE) Forum 2019 in the United States. By sharing the latest technology trends and strengthening cooperation within the foundry ecosystem, Samsung showcased its strong dedication to customers.

SAFE Forum is designed to provide an opportunity for SAFE partner companies to directly meet with customers to discuss comprehensive design technology infrastructure, including electronic design automation (EDA), intellectual property (IP), cloud, design service, and packaging, which is critical to efficiently developing and manufacturing semiconductor products.

While the Samsung Foundry Forum (SFF) has served as a channel to present Samsung’s technology roadmap and leadership to customers, the newly held SAFE Forum is distinctive in that it allows its partners to engage deeper and more efficient collaboration within Samsung’s foundry ecosystem by directly communicating in detail with customers on their own design support solutions proven by Samsung.

“SAFE program has grown in quality over the past two years; it has expanded the number of competitive partnerships and support of flexible product design for customers as well as bolstered the relationship between our partners, customers, and Samsung foundry,” said Jae-hong Park, executive vice president of Foundry Design Platform Development at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue our efforts in enhancing accessibility to enable customers to more easily utilize Samsung’s excellent foundry solutions.”

As the latest system-on-chip (SoC) product requires more sophisticated features in a smaller surface size than before, the number of considerations in IC design optimization has increased exponentially: performance, power, security, design, density, etc.

To actively respond to these IC design trends and lower the design barrier for developing competitive SoCs, Samsung Electronics launched the SAFE program in early 2018.

Under the slogan “Partnering for a bold silicon future”, details on the latest global IC design trends as well as benefits of the efficient easy-to-use platform design infrastructure were introduced.

With more than 400 industry experts attending the first SAFE Forum, 12 detailed sessions were given by around 30 speakers from 15 partner companies, focusing on emerging high-growth applications, including high-performing computer (HPC), internet-of-things (IoT), and automotive. Attendees also had a chance to discover the optimal solution for implementing their new ideas into chips through 40 partner booths at the venue.

As part of its strategic partnership with VMware, Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, has collaborated with VMware, to develop the first fully operational prototype of a VMware Cloud Foundation-based software-defined data center (SDDC) rack that uses NVMe solid state drives. The prototype will be first exhibited today at VMworld® 2016 in the Samsung booth (#1559) at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center here in Las Vegas.

The VMware Cloud Foundation-based rack was built using six Dell R730XD servers, each configured with two Samsung PM1725 NVMe solid state drives (SSDs) as the caching tier and six Samsung PM863 SATA SSDs as the capacity tier. The prototype spans successful imaging and bring-up of the integrated system rack, creation of a workload domain, and deployment of applications within the workload-domain-hosted VMware vSphere® cluster.

“VMware Cloud Foundation is based on VMware Virtual SAN 6.2 with support for all-flash storage and greater data efficiency,” said Raj Yavatkar, VMware fellow, chief architect for VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware. “Our collaboration with Samsung, to combine VSAN with Samsung NVMe SSDs, in VMware Cloud Foundation, brings low latency flash to mainstream applications and makes flash affordable to business-critical applications.”

“Through our strong ongoing strategic relationship with VMware, we are providing the best of both worlds for IT managers by allowing them to quickly build and deploy public and private clouds using the VMware Cloud Foundation combined with our NVMe SSDs,” said Michael Williams, Vice President, Memory Product Planning, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. “Samsung NVMe SSDs deliver a new level of performance for VMware Cloud Foundation-based systems that is simply not attainable with SAS or SATA SSDs.”

Selected for the caching tier, the PM1725 SSD allows enterprise scale-up storage systems to fully utilize the low latency and extremely high efficiency of the NVMe interface. Based on Samsung’s 3-bit MLC V-NAND technology and the NVMe 1.2 standard, the PM1725 features a native PCIe Gen-3 x8 interface, allowing a single drive to deliver up to one million random read IOPS and 140K random write IOPS, as well as reading sequentially at up to 6GB/s and writing sequentially at 1.9GB/s. The PM1725 can also provide five DWPDs (drive writes per day) of write endurance for five years, allowing it to support write-intensive enterprise caching applications, as well as read-intensive primary storage.

For the capacity tier, Samsung’s PM863 is the industry’s most flexible family of SATA SSDs for servers and storage systems. The PM863 is available in a wide range of capacities, from 120GB to 3.84TB in a 2.5” 7mm-thick form factor. PM863 SSDs are powered by Samsung 3-bit MLC V-NAND technology, which ushered in a new era of cost-effective, all-flash, read-intensive storage for SATA-based data centers.

VMware Cloud Foundation brings together the power of vSphere, VirtualSAN, NSX and SDDC Manager into a natively integrated stack that makes it extremely easy to deploy and operate an SDDC, according to VMware. It includes automated installation, configuration and deployment of the virtual infrastructure stack. The automation allows customers to instantiate a cloud instance either as an on-premises private cloud or as a per-tenant cloud instance in a public cloud.
Samsung affiliate PrinterOn has been a making a name for itself in cloud printing circles for 16 years. In fact, the company was pioneering in this field even in the days before people started using the term “cloud.”

The company began life as a Canadian document handling company. But in the late 1990s, PrinterOn realized that market was changing. It acted fast as the millennium approached, and first launched its cloud printing services in 2001.

Angus Cunningham, PrinterOn’s President and CEO, explains that timing was everything. He says, “We saw mobility as a strong and fast-developing market force. At the same time, we also realized mobile workers still needed to use traditional office tools as part of their work.”

Cunningham says PrinterOn foresaw a shift in the market. This led solution providers to shift their focus “from niche to mainstream needs.”

Cloud Breakthroughs

PrinterOn’s strategy paid dividends. Cunningham says businesses are now making key decisions with mobile matters in mind. “Cloud acceptance is clearly growing,” he notes. “Our vision of the cloud has allowed us to take a design-based approach. That means we can provide a broad base for all our current products.”

For smaller companies, however, spreading news of your developments is not always easy. Cunningham explains, “While we did see great opportunities, we faced limitations in terms of developing our business. As we were a smaller business at the time, we had to focus on areas where we could drive up revenue.”

Shared Visions

Samsung Printing Solutions was impressed with PrinterOn’s vision for the future of mobile printing and began to take a keen interest. The two companies started talking in 2010 and signed preliminary agreements in 2013. Finally, in September 2014, Samsung and PrinterOn finalized a wide-ranging partnership deal.

It was a deal that brought immediate benefit to both parties. Cunningham says Samsung believed PrinterOn’s solutions would be compatible with a wide range of printers, and that they were “open-standard and agnostic.”

Says Cunningham, “Samsung also recognizes that most companies have a mixed set of printers. To better service that need, you need to be able to handle a diverse printer lineup.”

PrinterOn CEO Angus Cunningham uses a smartphone to manage a print job on a Samsung multifunction printer.

Going Global with Mobile Printing

The Samsung collaboration means PrinterOn can now deliver solutions to a much bigger market.

“We have always been strong in terms of R&D. But before we struck our partnership with Samsung, we did not have a huge marketing presence,” explains Cunningham. “For us to really get into the mainstream, we needed a good partner. With Samsung, we have much more in the way of worldwide technical resources. Our product and R&D teams can access these to speed up their product and service development.”

And the collaborative advantages do not stop there. The PrinterOn chief adds, “There are now more eyes to look at our products, and more minds to consider market needs as we develop new solutions. Samsung told us, ‘If you need something, let us know and we’ll make it happen.’”

Security Matters

Many IT decision makers say security is a concern when it comes to mobile printing and cloud services. That is why PrinterOn’s solutions help ease such concerns. These include high-grade end-to-end encryption, which ensures sensitive documents stay safe.

“Security awareness is part of our culture,” says Cunningham. “We review our own security as part of the development process. We also encourage our customers to perform their own security audits and to share the results with us. We then use this feedback and incorporate it directly into our product development.”

New Horizons

PrinterOn now offers a range of cloud and mobile printing services suitable for companies of all sizes. Cunningham says, “All our product lines are in a state of growth.”

And PrinterOn sees big opportunities in the mobility sector. This, explains Cunningham, is another area where the Samsung partnership can help. PrinterOn solutions developments also can also add value across multiple Samsung businesses.

Most importantly, says, Cunningham, the partnership offers plenty of potential for future growth. He says, “Enterprises are going more mobile than ever. As mobile devices become more powerful, the scope for integration will only continue to broaden.”

Today’s customers are eager for mobile printing solutions. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC):

The needs of mobile users for mobile printing have increasing sharply from 16% in 2011 to 49% in 2015. This means that currently, almost half of all mobile users want access to mobile printing.

The paradigm of the printing market is shifting. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) based on volume of pages of non-mobile printing is forecasted to increase by only 2.2 %. However, the CAGR by volume of pages of mobile printing is estimated to increase by 20 % in the same period (2008-2016).

Though the use of mobile printing is expected to grow, the largest barrier for its popularization is the misconception that it is too difficult to adopt.

Making Mobile Printing Easy

Recently, Samsung started equipping almost every printing product with mobile printing functions like NFC tagging, mobile printing applications, cloud printing and more for making mobile printing easily accessible for all mobile users.

Now, Samsung Mobile Print compatible product series are even more than 170. Also, Samsung’s Cloud Print compatible series are more than 90 and will boost the number of its series more than 110 by next month.

The Freedom of Mobile Printing

Samsung applied mobile printing function in 2010 for the first time. Now, Samsung’s fourth generation mobile printing solution is providing the easiest and most convenient way to print from smart devices.

Samsung Mobile Print features instant mobile printing directly from mobile to printer for printing photos or documents saved on mobile devices without a PC. It doesn’t require data usage and is able to connect through Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, even when accessing the cloud. Samsung Mobile Print also provides powerful image editing functions like on a PC. It includes 14 features for instant enhancement, color adjustment, effects and other modifications, such as cropping and rotation. No other mobile printing solution offers such a wide-range of editing functions. Single-tap pairing between users’ smart devices and printers, offered through NFC tagging, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi and USB connection makes Samsung Mobile Print the easiest to use. And its mobile printing app for customizing preferences and keeping menus neat and clutter-free includes cloud services and access to social networking sites.

Printing from the Cloud

For small office and home office (SOHO) businesses, Samsung introduced Cloud Print Public last May.

Samsung Cloud Print Public is a perfect solution because it offers a high-quality print experience from mobile devices. It supports each file up to 16 MB, utilizing unique rendering software based on the cloud to convert files into print-ready documents without any loss of quality, which is superior to other mobile printing solutions. Cloud printing technology enables simple device-to-printer connection without a PC for a hassle-free experience. With no need for a Wi-Fi connection or print drive, users can print quickly and effortlessly from any location, regardless of network. It only takes four simple steps to install the cloud printing app and pair your device with a printer, even without a local network connection. The sign-up process can be completed with a phone number, without creating a new account. Scanned files can be sent to users’ mobile applications or cloud storage. Cloud preview enables users to remove unnecessary pages. Both of these features, along with secure pairing with NFC tag-and-go technology are available only through Samsung.

Enhanced Security for the Future of Business

During the second half of this year, Samsung will launch additional cloud printing solutions with enhanced security features for small to medium businesses (SMB). It will also improve overall mobile printing solutions to give seamless business experiences on any devices, anytime, anywhere.
