The quality of graphics and sound in games is improving all the time. Therefore, to ensure they can enjoy games to their fullest, gamers must ensure they are playing on high-specification equipment that is capable of delivering a premium gaming experience.

Amid this climate, Samsung has launched its Odyssey Neo G9 gaming monitor, which is specifically designed for gamers who want to enjoy a high-resolution, smooth gaming experience devoid of delays. Launched in 2020, the Odyssey Neo G9’s predecessor the Odyssey G9 was the first-ever 1000R curvature gaming monitor and set a new standard with its outstanding, quantum-technology-enabled image quality.

Samsung Newsroom unboxed and reviewed the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 to get a better sense of how the monitor is enriching gaming experiences.

Easy Installation With a Sturdy Stand and Expanded Connectivity

After you open the package and remove each of the components, it becomes clear just how easy it is to install the Odyssey Neo G9. In addition to the 123.8cm-wide, 32:9 ultra-widescreen monitor with its circular core that glows during gameplay, the package contains a sturdy stand that provides a solid base and cables that facilitate easy connection to a variety of external devices.

* When assembling the monitor, please refer to the user manual that comes with the product.

For quick and simple installation, first screw the stand into the center back of the monitor while it is still in its packaging. Then, attach the core lighting component that is divided into two halves by joining them at the joint and twisting them in. The stand is easy to assemble and disassemble due to its cradle form, while the height, tilt and rotation of the monitor can be adjusted to ensure an optimal gameplay position.

These days, users game on desktops, laptops, and consoles. To ensure that all these types of gamers are taken into consideration, the Odyssey Neo G9 features a range of different ports to facilitate connection to a host of devices. With two HDMI 2.1 ports, along with DisplayPort 1.4 and USB 3.0 ports on the back of the monitor, users can connect a range of different devices to their monitor and game on the big screen. Another strength of the Odyssey Neo G9 is its ‘Auto Source Switch+’ feature, which allows the monitor to switch input sources automatically when another device is connected.

Quantum Matrix and Quantum HDR 2000: The Secrets to Detailed, Lifelike Resolution

The 1000R curvature of the Odyssey Neo G9 is close to the visual field of humans, allowing the display to completely fill the user’s peripheral vision. What’s more, the monitor’s dual QHD display and 5,120×1,440 resolution enable detailed images to fill the user’s visual field, drawing them more deeply into the scenes being displayed.

The secret to the Odyssey Neo G9’s outstanding resolution is Quantum Matrix technology. With the introduction of finer light sources, the number of local dimming zones in the screen has been increased to 2,048. What’s more, the monitor’s contrast can now be adjusted to a much finer degree, with 4,096 different contrast levels available to help bring out the unique characteristics of both bright and dark tones.

HDR technology, which expands the brightest and darkest points of the brightness spectrum, has been recognized as the next-generation standard for displaying images. With its Quantum HDR 2000 technology, the Odyssey Neo G9 can vividly reproduce scenes with sharp differences in brightness, like those featuring explosions. This technology enables brightness of up to 2,000 nits, which is two times greater than that of existing monitors such as the previous Odyssey G9 model.

The static contrast ratio of the Odyssey Neo G9 is 1,000,000:1, which means its high performance stands out even more when it displays images with sharp differences in brightness. By expressing dark colors more deeply and bright ones more brightly, the monitor is able to establish dimensional contrast.

Taking Every Experience to New Heights of Immersion With Core Sync

Another advantage of the Odyssey Neo G9 series is the way the monitor’s aesthetics allow users to create their own special gaming atmosphere. Just like the previous model, the Odyssey G9, the Odyssey Neo G9 comes with core lighting on the back of the monitor, which further establishes a captivating gaming environment.

The monitor’s Infinity Lighting, which emits a blue light when the monitor is turned on, has evolved in the Odyssey Neo G9 thanks to the new ‘Core Sync’ feature. Core Sync automatically analyzes the color at the center of the screen and radiates lighting of the same color from the back of the screen. This feature can be turned on by navigating to the ‘Infinity Core Lighting’ menu in the monitor settings and enabling ‘Lighting’ and ‘Core Sync.’ Thus, whether the gamer is exploring deep waters or a dark forest, the Odyssey Neo G9 deepens their immersion by providing ambient light of a similar hue to blur the boundaries between the game and reality.

The monitor’s Infinity Core Lighting includes a number of other dynamic features too. From ‘Lighting Effect’, which sets the lighting to a single color, to ‘Rainbow’, which makes the core switch colors at intervals, this feature allows gamers to enhance their experience however they see fit.

High Refresh Rate for Smooth Gameplay and Minimal Input Lag

While having fast reactions is crucially important while gaming, reacting quickly proves useless when the commands entered aren’t reflected instantaneously in the game. The Odyssey Neo G9 is equipped with a number of useful features to help ensure that the ability to react quickly will put users on the road to victory.

The time it takes for a signal that is entered using a mouse or a keyboard to be reflected on the screen is called input lag. With its ‘Low Input Lag’ feature, the Odyssey Neo G9 shortens the time it takes for commands to be processed and delivers smooth gameplay. The addition of the ‘AMD FreeSync Premium Pro’ and ‘NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible’ features have also allowed the GPU and panel to be synced up in the Odyssey Neo G9. By minimizing interruptions and distortion, the monitor allows users to enjoy smooth visuals even when playing a game with swift camera movements.

The display capabilities of the monitor are also important when it comes to enjoying a game with high-level graphics to its fullest. One of the main criteria for evaluating display capabilities is refresh rate, which represents the number of images being displayed per second. With a high refresh rate of 240Hz, the Odyssey Neo G9 is capable of seamlessly displaying even action-packed games with highly detailed graphics.

The time it takes for a video signal sent from the graphics card to reach the display is called response time. The response time of the Odyssey Neo G9 is 1ms,1 which means it can display signals sent from the graphics card in just 0.001 seconds. This allows gamers to enjoy clear visuals free of stuttering and choppiness. The monitor’s 1ms response time comes in especially handy when playing FPS or racing games that require swift camera movements.

A high performance and deeply immersive monitor, the Odyssey Neo G9 helps you transform your space into the ultimate gaming environment. For users striving to reach the very top of their respective gaming universes, this visually stunning gaming monitor is a must-have.

Samsung Electronics, a top tier gaming monitor company,* today announced the global launch of its next-generation curved gaming monitor, the Odyssey Neo G9 (Model Name: G95NA), enhanced with Quantum Mini LED technology. The Odyssey Neo G9 joins the Odyssey lineup, taking gaming to the next level with Quantum Matrix technology, supported by Quantum Mini LED display and Quantum HDR 2000 for an immersive gaming experience.

With the previous launch of the Odyssey G9 in 2020, Samsung pushed the boundaries of premium gaming monitors with smooth and brilliant picture quality. Now with the industry’s first Quantum Mini LED curved display delivering the most refined detail regardless of the game played, the Odyssey Neo G9 is catapulting the gaming monitor category forward. Featuring Quantum Matrix Technology combined with super-fast response and refresh rates, Odyssey Neo G9 delivers an unrivaled dynamic picture and premium performance for all gamers.

“Samsung addressed the demands and expectations of even the most demanding gamers with the launch of the groundbreaking Odyssey gaming monitor portfolio last year,” said Hyesung Ha, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the introduction of the Odyssey Neo G9, equipped with Quantum Mini LED displays, we are excited to offer a state-of-the-art gaming experience to our customers and demonstrate our continuous leadership in the market.”

The Odyssey Neo G9 utilizes the same Mini LED technology built into Samsung’s latest Neo QLED lineup. This next-generation display technology is enabled by a new light source, Quantum Mini LED. At 1/40 the height of a conventional LED,1 the Quantum Mini LED has incredibly thin micro layers filled with many more LEDs.

Additionally, Quantum Matrix Technology, which harnesses enhanced 12-bit gradation for greater control of the light source – the Quantum Mini LEDs makes dark areas darker and bright areas brighter with 2,048 dimming zones, ensuring viewers enjoy the content as it is meant to be seen. Quantum HDR 2000 offers a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, with certification received from VDE (Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker), alongside a static contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.

Samsung Electronics today announced its new 27-inch CRG5(C27RG5) gaming monitor, the latest in Samsung’s line of curved gaming monitors. The CRG5 delivers innovative new gaming features including a lightning-fast 240Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility — providing a powerful combination of unparalleled picture quality and speed for intense gameplay.

“Samsung’s delivering next-level gaming experiences with innovative curved displays using the latest graphics technology to immerse gamers like never before,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Combining a 240Hz refresh rate with NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility in Samsung’s new CRG5 curved gaming monitor gives gamers advanced performance for the most graphic-intense games.”

The 27-inch CRG5 delivers a 1500R display curvature combined with a lightning-fast refresh rate through 240Hz RapidCurve technology, eliminating screen lag time while displaying ultra-smooth scenes for a truly immersive experience. The monitor has been validated by NVIDIA to meet the performance and image quality requirements for G-SYNC compatibility and delivers smooth, tear-free, low-latency gameplay during any scene, all in full HD resolution (1920×1080).

The monitor has deeper blacks and brighter whites with a 3000:1 contrast ratio, providing superfine detail even in the brightest and darkest parts of a game. CRG5 has a curved vertical alignment (VA) panel display, providing an immersive gaming experience with wide viewing angle.

CRG5’s minimal bezel design offers near edge-to-edge screen on three sides and a sturdy, ergonomic stand to help gamers stay comfortably immersed in gameplay. Gamers can also select pre-set display options for any genre of game with an on-screen digital menu, and for more advanced customization users can create up to three separate display profiles to easily switch between.

The new curved gaming monitor joins Samsung’s full line of innovative curved gaming displays, including the company’s new groundbreaking 49-inch, CRG9 that immerses gamers in detail and color with a high-resolution super ultra-wide gaming monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio, dramatic 1800R curved screen and HDR1000. The Dual QHD display (5120×1440) leverages Samsung’s revolutionary Quantum dot technology for an exceptionally wide range of accurate color reproduction, so every game feels true to life.

The CRG5 will be unveiled at the PC Gaming Show from PC Gamer, broadcast live on Twitch, June 10 at 10:00 AM Pacific Time.
Since its launch in August, Samsung’s CHG90 – the world’s largest QLED gaming monitor – has emerged as an industry innovator and pioneer. The monitor’s leadership position recently received further validation from the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), who, following a rigorous testing procedure, confirmed that the CHG90 (along with the CHG70) exemplifies its DisplayHDR 600 performance standards and is the industry’s first display to be certified as DisplayHDR compliant.

Up until recently, there had been no standard specification for the HDR performance of PC monitors and laptop computer displays. But earlier this year, VESA, an international non-profit that sets and supports industry-wide interface standards for displays, established the DisplayHDR standard. The fully open standard specifies HDR quality, including luminance, color gamut, bit depth and rise time. It consists of three levels (DisplayHDR 400, 600, 1000); specifically, the DisplayHDR 600 tier indicates that HDR content can be enjoyed in bright indoor lighting conditions.

When granting DisplayHDR 600 certification to the CHG90, VESA cited the monitor’s use of HDR to elevate contrast ratio (3,000:1), color accuracy and overall presentation vibrancy as an industry standard-setter. The certification further validates the CHG90’s ability to provide the optimal gaming and entertainment viewing environment, but is just the latest in a series of recent accolades for the monitor.

Several global technology media outlets and organizations have commemorated the display’s performance and presentation. Among them include Trusted Reviews’ Best Monitor of 2017 Award, which recognizes the “year’s best technologies, gadgets and innovations”; TechRadar’s Five-Star Review, which describes the CHG90 as “one of the most functionally distinct and visually impressive monitors” ever tested by the publication; and a CES 2018 Innovation Award for its outstanding design and engineering, immersive presentation and gamer-friendly features.

With an eye-catching yet practical design, exceptional image quality and flexible multi-program presentation capabilities, Samsung’s CHG90 continues to raise the bar for HDR monitors.

Measuring 49 inches from corner to corner, or the combined size of two 27-inch monitors, Samsung’s QLED CHG90 is the world’s largest gaming monitor.

Its 32:9 super ultra-wide aspect ratio, 3840 x 1080 resolution, 1800R curvature and 144Hz refresh rate foster smooth and captivating visuals that not only amplify gamers’ immersion, but make multitasking a breeze. Let’s take a closer look at how the CHG90’s combination of singular specs and unified design is changing the game.

An Open View

The CHG90’s eye-catching design reflects careful consideration of how the human eye works. When viewed at the optimal distance (roughly 40 to 50cm away), the monitor’s 1800R curvature and wide viewing angle align with users’ natural field of view – filling their gaze to its periphery, and greatly enhancing immersion.

This panoramic perspective makes viewing movies and videos that much more cinematic, and allows gamers to scan their characters’ surroundings in their entirety, unhindered by the bezels that would block out the center of the screen with a dual-monitor setup.

The CHG90’s panoramic view makes it easy to lock in on the action when playing first-person shooter (FPS) games like “PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS”.

Packed within the CHG90’s immersion-enhancing frame are the latest advancements in imaging technologies, including Quantum dot color and HDR support. The former allows the CHG90 to express approximately one billion unique shades of accurate color (approximately 125% of the sRGB standard), while the latter allows for much brighter brights and darker darks. The CHG90’s wide VA (Vertical Alignment) panel adds additional depth to blacks, and ensures that colors are depicted accurately regardless of the user’s viewing angle.

Such impeccable detail and color reproduction not only add new layers of immersion to gaming, but also provide an ideal platform for carrying out tasks such as photo and video editing.

Designed for Work and Play

The CHG90’s spacious design and powerful performance make it equally suitable for work and play. The intuitive Easy Setting Box screen-division software is especially useful for multitasking, allowing users to, with a simple click, divide their screen into multiple windows of varying sizes by utilizing customizable window configurations.

Those who use dual-monitor setups will often connect different devices to each screen to manage them side by side. The CHG90’s Picture-by-Picture (PBP) function supports the simultaneous connection of two external inputs, essentially allowing the monitor to serve as two separate screens for different devices.

This functionality makes it possible for users to, for instance, set up two separate workspaces by connecting their monitor to both their DeX Station and their personal computer.

Hassle-free Hardware

The CHG90’s seamless design extends well beyond its immersive screen. The monitor connects with a single display cable and a power cord, which means setup is simple, and also makes it easier to maintain a clean and uncluttered desk or workspace.

The CHG90 also features a variety of ports, including two HDMI inputs, a display port and a Mini DisplayPort, that allow users to conveniently connect an array of peripheral devices to the monitor itself, rather than plugging them into their computer. The adjustable-height stand is another convenient feature that tilts and swivels to offer users precision control over their display’s orientation, enhancing comfort during use.

Speaking of comfort, because staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause eye fatigue, the CHG90 features a low-reflection coating that reduces such strain. Other features designed to increase viewing comfort include the monitor’s Eye Saver mode, which reduces blue light emission, as well as its Flicker Free setting, which minimizes backlight flickering.

The monitor’s low-reflection coating adds comfort to extended gaming and browsing sessions by minimizing strain on users’ eyes.

By removing the need for dual-monitor setups, and fostering viewing experiences that make it easy for multitaskers to get more done and for gamers to immerse themselves in the on-screen action, Samsung’s CHG90 signals a future for gaming monitors that’s not only bright, but wide open.

Samsung Electronics today introduced the future of gaming with the unveiling of its new CHG90 and CHG70 curved monitors, which feature the powerful High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture enhancement technology typically reserved for televisions. When combined with the CHG90’s ultra-wide design and the CHG70’s quantum dot composition, this HDR integration produces a realistic, detailed picture that showcases games exactly as developers intended, and dramatically improves gameplay with crisper colors and sharper contrast.

“Gamers want to feel completely immersed in their favorite games, and our new monitors provide the most stunning visuals and realistic content to deliver the ultimate gaming experience”, said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President, Enterprise Business at Samsung Electronics. “These QLED gaming monitors are the gateway to the future of gaming for casual, enthusiastic and competitive gamers alike, and we’re looking forward to building upon these game-changing technologies to further meet the needs of gamers, developers and partners in the coming years.”

A More Vivid and Detailed Gaming Environment

The QLED quantum dot technology delivers a new metal core and supports both approximately 125 percent of the sRGB color spectrum and 95 percent of the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI-P3) motion picture standard to deliver an exceptionally wide color range.

Samsung’s CHG90 sets the new visual standard for gaming displays by projecting a 32:9 aspect ratio and 3,840×1,080 double full HD (DFHD) resolution across a 49-inch screen. The CHG90 literally extends the playing field for gamers, with its broad design surpassing industry standards while simultaneously representing the widest monitor in the company’s gaming portfolio. The monitor delivers stunning 1,800R curvature and an ultra-wide 178-degree viewing angle, maintaining content visibility from any location within a given space. As a result, gamers no longer have to worry about the logistics, expenses and central bezel interference that occur when combining multiple smaller monitors together for an expanded view.

Ideal for first-person shooting, racing, flight simulation and action-heavy games, the CHG90 aligns an accelerated refresh rate (144Hz) and 1ms motion picture response time (MPRT) with advanced, four-channel scanning technology to deter motion blur and produce a more consistent picture across the entire screen.

Gaming at the Next Level

Available in 27- and 31.5-inch variations, The CHG70 integrates HDR and quantum dot technologies, with a 144Hz refresh rate further helping to bring out the best in gaming content. This combination offers gamers a viewing arena that is brighter (600nit peak brightness), clearer (2,560×1,440 WQHD resolution) and more luminous, and which brings the slightest visual nuances to the forefront in extremely light or dark environments.

The CHG90 and CHG70 arrive as the best Samsung gaming monitors to feature AMD’s Radeon FreeSync technology. Radeon FreeSync supports a wide color gamut to showcase HDR content with twice the perceivable brightness and color than that offered by the sRGB standard. As a result, users can enjoy a smooth, low-latency plug-and-play HDR gaming experience without having to frequently readjust software or monitor settings.

“We’re incredibly proud of how far Radeon FreeSync technology has come in the past two years, with well over 150 displays now shipping in the market,” said Scott Herkelman, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Gaming, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD. “We believe these gorgeous monitors should be on every gaming enthusiast’s must-have list.”

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

As Samsung’s latest gaming monitors prepare to hit the market, the company continues to expand their usability and prepare the wider gaming industry for HDR content. In strategic partnership with the EA studio DICE and Ghost Games, the CHG90 and CHG70 have undergone rigorous tuning to ensure optimal HDR picture quality.

“We’re delighted to work closely with Samsung’s monitor team to optimize the CHG90 and CHG70 monitors for our games, which is vital so that our new game title “Star Wars Battlefront II” which will be released later in the year can be mirrored on these HDR monitors the way our game developers intended” said Oskar Gabrielson, General Manager of DICE.

“Here at Ghost Games, we always look at the latest technology that helps present Need for Speed in the best way possible and constantly look to push the boundaries. Technologies like HDR enable us to deliver an ever-greater emotional and immersive experience for our players. Samsung’s HDR monitors allow Need for Speed Payback to be exactly that” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games.

Additionally, both monitors recently received HDR compatibility validation with Nvidia’s graphics cards, ensuring they can clearly showcase a wider range of HDR-based gaming titles and PC devices.

Even prior to their widespread launch, the CHG90 and CHG70 have already earned industry recognition as leaders in the monitor product category. Last month, the Industrial Designers Society of America acknowledged both monitors as part of its annual IDEA Awards, which commemorate technologies for design innovation that improves both the economy and overall quality of life. The CHG90 received a Bronze prize in the program’s Consumer Technology category, with the CHG70 likewise garnering a Finalist nomination in the same group.

Samsung Electronics once again demonstrated its commitment to leading monitor innovation at CES 2017, showcasing a range of new monitors designed to deliver a cutting-edge entertainment experience.

The curved Quantum dot displays presented at CES, including the new CH711 and the previously released CFG70 and CF791 gaming monitors, emphasize brilliant design and rich color to foster an immersive and realistic viewing experience.

“We look forward to participating in CES every year, as it brings together the brightest and most inspirational technological minds from around the world for several days of creativity and collaboration,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s first dedicated gaming monitor – the curved, Quantum dot CFG70 – reflects its proven expertise in display technologies and features standout specs. Senior Engineer Hoseong Seo and Marketing Assistant Manager Hyang Go of Samsung’s Visual Display team explain how their team achieved the ultra-fast 1ms mark in a curved monitor, and how the technology manages to deliver smoother visuals and a more immersive gaming experience.

Senior Engineer Hoseong Seo (left) and Marketing Assistant Manager Hyang Go

Q. The type of LCD panel used in a gaming monitor is key in determining how it displays. How did you select the right one for the CFG70?

Hoseong Seo: Gaming monitors feature different types of LCD panels, namely Twisted Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), and In-Plane Switching (IPS) or Plane to Line Switching (PLS). But to meet our requirements for image quality and response time, there was really only one answer.

The CFG70 features a VA panel, which provides a high contrast range, rich color and a wide viewing angle. We chose a VA not only because they’re the optimal panels for curved monitors, which are scientifically proven to be more visually comfortable, but also because it integrated perfectly with our Quantum dot technology, allowing us to deliver supreme image quality.

Most VA panels feature an MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time – the standard for measuring the “motion blur” of rapidly moving objects in a sequence of images) of between 4 and 6 milliseconds. The CFG70’s, however, is just 1ms.

Q. What steps did you take to achieve that 1-millisecond mark?

Hoseong Seo: The difference is in the CFG70’s impulsive scanning technology. With older, CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors, when a scene changes, the screen will very quickly turn off and back on. The human eye compensates for the gap, and the user sees seamless visuals without motion blur. LCD monitors, on the other hand, do not turn off when a scene changes, which makes them susceptible to motion-blur issues.

Impulsive scanning technology reduces motion blur by regulating a monitor’s backlight between each scene. The conventional method to address this issue is to control the backlight from the center of the screen, but this may allow motion blur to remain in the upper and lower areas.

The CFG70’s backlights are divided into four sections that synchronize with image frames to eliminate motion blur across its screen.

The CFG70 features advanced “four-channel” impulsive scanning technology, which is more precise. It creates a cleaner visual experience by dividing the screen into four sections to remove motion blur more efficiently, and Samsung was the first to apply it to create a 1ms monitor.

Q. How did you anticipate gamers would respond to the CFG70’s advanced technology?

Hyang Go: Well, while it’s true that gamers greatly value innovation in their visual displays, not all will ultimately choose to buy the products with the most advanced technologies. One reason for this is simply because not everyone sees the difference.

We believe that the CFG70 curved gaming monitor’s strengths are very clear, however, and we wanted to give gamers an opportunity to see for themselves. So we invited some gamers to participate in a blind test comparing the visuals produced by its 1ms response time and impulsive scanning technology with those of competing gaming monitors.

Ten out of the 11 participants deemed the CFG70 superior, which is a testament to our development team’s hard work. One particularly perceptive participant even pointed out motion blur at the top and bottom of one of the other monitors’ screens, which proves the impulsive scanning technology’s effectiveness.

Q. How do you believe the CFG70 will ultimately enrich the gaming experience?

Hoseong Seo: Most gamers will carefully examine a number of different specs when choosing a monitor. Though other monitors may match the CFG70’s specs, we believe users of the CFG70 will see a real difference in visual performance.

In the end, the CFG70’s response time, along with its Quantum dot color and four-channel impulsive scanning technology, will allow users to enjoy a much more realistic and visually immersive gaming experience than they’d get with other gaming monitors on the market today.

<img loading="lazy" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-79773" class="size-full wp-image-79773" src="https://img.global.news.samsung.com/global/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gaming-Monitor-CFG70-Interview_Main_3.jpg" alt="The display of a competing monitor with a 4ms response time is compared alongside Samsung’s 1ms CFG70.

Now more than ever, PC gamers value top-quality displays that add clear, responsive visuals to their gaming experience. Samsung’s new CFG70 curved gaming monitor has proven a hit with hardcore gamers because of its ability to deliver a curved display, rapid response time and vibrant Quantum dot color. Samsung Newsroom interviewed the four developers behind the new display, who discussed its design and innovative features in depth.

The main developers behind the CFG70 gaming monitor (from left): Senior Engineer Sung Duk Cho, Assistant Engineer Yoon Ah Kim, and Senior Engineers Hee Bok Song and Jung Woo Hong of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display team.

Q: Tell us a bit about the CFG70’s response time and the value it brings to the gaming experience.

Hee Bok Song: A gaming monitor’s basic job is to provide smooth graphics without afterimages. We used to measure display response time in terms of panel response, but nowadays we use MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time). The CFG70’s MPRT is one millisecond, which is the fastest in its category. Although there are other monitors that feature a 1ms response time, what makes the CFG70 special is that it is the first to feature a curved display.

The CFG70 features three essential virtues of an ideal gaming monitor: a 1ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate and curved display.

To foster an ideal gaming experience, we incorporated a 144Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync technology. Modern gaming PCs boast high frame rates, and sometimes monitors with lower refresh rates cannot display their graphics properly. However, with FreeSync and a 144Hz refresh rate, the CFG70 provides gamers with smooth, uninterrupted visuals.

Q: What differentiates the CFG70 from other monitors in terms of picture quality?

Jung Woo Hong: The CFG70 is the first monitor equipped with Quantum dot technology. The biggest difference between this and monitors without Quantum dots is in the range of hues that can be reproduced, which indicates how well a particular display can create lifelike, original color.

Common monitors are capable of implementing 72 percent of the PC-standard ‘sRGB’ wide color gamut, and monitors made for professionals measure between 98 and 119 percent. The CFG70, however, can realize 125 percent of this range. Achieving an even and clear high-definition picture on a curved monitor was no easy feat, but we researched relentlessly in order to pull it off.

Q: What were some of your key focuses when designing the monitor’s UX?

The CFG70 includes user-friendly Gaming UX on-screen display (OSD) interface

Sung Duk Cho: Different games require different capabilities in a display. For example, First-Person Shooters (FPS) require smooth visuals for dynamic scene changes and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games (MOBAs) require clearly discernible colors so players can easily recognize their character’s location. Therefore, when we designed the CFG70’s UX, we wanted it to be able to complement a range of different games.

In order to implement the new UX, we installed a high-level graphic engine into the monitor itself. The CFG70’s default game settings were also carefully configured with the input of the Samsung Galaxy pro gaming team as well as other gamers who tested out the monitor firsthand. The result is a highly versatile UX that satisfies both hardcore and typical gamers alike.

The monitor also features ‘Arena Lighting’, which responds to in-game sound effects to bring lifelike lighting to users’ video-game experience. So in a FPS, for example, when a player fires a gun, the lighting responds accordingly. Each spark and blast bathes the player in light, drawing them deeper into the action by creating a more immersive gaming experience.

Q: What was the impetus behind the monitor’s dual-hinge design?

The dual-hinge design and the “Pivot” technology of the CFG70’s stand allows users to position their monitor to their preference.

Yoon Ah Kim: Rapid response time and high-definition visuals are of no use if users cannot comfortably concentrate on their screen. Our research indicates that many gamers find it uncomfortable when their monitor’s position is even slightly off. In fact, many hardcore gamers are sensitive to differences in screen position as small as a half an inch or less.

The engineering process was not easy, but with user convenience as our top priority we managed to achieve a design for the CFG70’s stand that features easily adjustable double joints. Resembling a robot arm, the stand allows users to comfortably adjust their monitor’s position to their preference.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its newest industry-leading gaming monitor. The CFG70 curved monitor, designed specifically for professional gamers, includes enhanced picture quality and player-friendly features for a truly immersive gaming experience. The display was first introduced at the Gamescom 2016 and IFA 2016 conferences.

As the industry’s first curved gaming monitor to feature quantum dot technology, the CFG70 monitor (24- and 27-inch models) expresses brilliant and accurate colors across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum. This added luminance produces a 3,000:1 contrast ratio and amplifies previously-hidden gaming details in both light and dark settings. The monitor also employs an environmentally-safe, cadmium-free design.

“With the introduction of quantum dot technology to our pioneering curved monitors, Samsung offers a look into the future of gaming, along with a level of picture quality like the industry has never seen before,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The CFG70 makes gamers feel as if they are part of the action, and represents Samsung’s most powerful and visually-compelling curved monitor to date.”

Fast Speed and Smooth Game Play

By combining Samsung’s advanced motion blur reduction technology with its VA panel, the CFG70 is the first curved monitor to produce a 1 ms moving picture response time (MPRT). The rapid MPRT rate reduces display transitions between moving and animated objects, and in turn eliminates potential visual distractions.

The CFG70 also leverages integrated AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI functionality to synchronize the screen’s 144 Hz refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics cards. This connectivity minimizes image tearing, input latency and stutter that can disrupt gameplay and escalate visual fatigue.

Optimized Gaming Experience

Samsung has equipped the CFG70 with a range of user-friendly gaming UX that drives more convenient and easily-accessible game management. The CFG70 includes a dedicated gaming interface with an intuitive settings dashboard to better allow gamers to modify and personalize their gameplay settings. Each CFG70 monitor also offers a series of hotkeys on the front and back of the display for users to easily adjust gameplay settings.

To further inspire gamer immersion and bring out the best in even the most complex game designs, including compatibility with the FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS genres, each CFG70 monitor undergoes rigorous pre-shipment factory calibration. This process optimizes various settings, including contrast ratios, black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management. As a result, gamers can enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

Comfortable and Immersive Viewing with the Curved Design

The CFG70’s “Super Arena” design, featuring industry-best 1,800R curvature and a 178-degree ultra-wide viewing angle, is formatted to match the natural curve of the human eye. Complementary sound-interactive LED lighting further creates a lifelike presentation and keeps users focused during the most paramount moments.

Additionally, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) recently named the CFG70 as a recipient of its annual Good Design Awards, which honor technologies that “improve the quality of life, industry and society.” The JDP acknowledged the efficiency and performance of the CFG70’s advanced gaming interface and convenience-driving composition.

At IFA 2016, Samsung Electronics will reinforce its leadership in the growing gaming market with the release of its most powerful and visually-compelling curved gaming monitors yet – the CFG70 (24- and 27-inch models) and CF791 (34-inch model) displays. Samsung will formally introduce the latest additions to its curved monitor portfolio at its IFA press conference, scheduled for September 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. inside the Messe Berlin event center’s City Cube Hall.

CFG70

As the first curved quantum dot gaming monitors, Samsung’s CFG70 and CF791 express brilliant colors across a 125-percent sRGB spectrum, while employing an environmentally-safe cadmium-free design. This luminance emphasizes a range of otherwise-hidden game details in both light and dark settings, offering unprecedented visual realism designed to capture the attention of even the most hardcore gamers.

To further amplify the details in today’s advanced gaming titles, each CFG70 and CF791 monitor undergoes rigorous factory calibration prior to shipment. This treatment includes optimization of various settings, including black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management, enabling gamers to enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

“As the gaming market continues to enjoy rapid worldwide growth, gamers expect advanced display technologies that can bring out the latest video game features and optimize the gameplay experience,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “By enhancing our pioneering curved gaming monitors with quantum dot technology, our CFG70 and CF791 displays further surround players and make them feel as if they are part of the game. We are excited to demonstrate this futuristic and immersive gaming environment at IFA 2016.”

Samsung’s quantum dot technology is already featured in the company’s UHD televisions. At IFA 2016, in line with the show’s innovation theme, Samsung will highlight how including this tested technology in the new CFG70 and CF791 displays brings the intricacies of today’s video games to life.

An Experience that’s Ahead of the Game

The new CFG70 curved monitor incorporates a host of user-friendly features to create a premium multi-sensory gaming destination. The CFG70’s “Super Arena” design aligns 1800R curvature with sound interactive LED lighting that lets players fully experience the thrill of victory. This format also includes 1 m/s moving picture response time, making it the first curved gaming monitor to offer such functionality. A rapid refresh rate of up to 144 Hz further ensures a seamless and uninterrupted presentation.

For added game management convenience, the CFG70 includes Samsung’s user-friendly Gaming UX OSD interface. During competition, gamers can access the interface’s intuitive on-screen dashboard to view all essential settings, ranging from response time to refresh rate, in a single glance. They can also easily adjust gameplay settings through shortcut hot keys located on the front and back of the monitor.

The Gaming Industry’s Sharpest Curve

With a 1500R curvature (indicating a curvature radius of 1,500 mm) design, Samsung’s CF791 is the most curved gaming monitor currently on the market. Combined with a 100 Hz refresh rate and embedded AMD FreeSync Technology, functionality that synchronizes screen refresh rates with gamers’ AMD graphics cards, the CF791 monitor offers consistent full-screen presentation. Additionally, the CF791’s ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio further preserves content quality during multi-screen competition.

Beyond its on-screen visual enhancements, Samsung’s new CF791 monitor features a sleek composition that adds ambience and style to any environment. The display’s boundless design removes visual distraction and helps gamers stay focused on the screen, rather than the display itself. Players also can customize the monitor’s alignment to match their unique ergonomic needs through a vertically-adjustable stand.

As part of the launch of its new monitors, Samsung will offer IFA 2016 attendees a first-hand opportunity to experience this redesigned, immersive arena through an interactive gaming zone. Samsung’s booth will include stations where visitors can sample several of today’s leading video game titles on the CFG70 and CF791 monitors. Supporting large-format SMART LED signage will broadcast the competition – and visual presentation – to the wider IFA audience.

In demonstrating the latest innovations across its curved gaming monitor portfolio, Samsung Electronics will reinforce its leadership in the interactive gameplay space at the Gamescom 2016 conference. Scheduled to take place August 17-21, 2016 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany and billed as “the world’s largest computer and video game event,” Gamescom 2016 is expected to bring together more than 345,000 gamers, media, developers and retailers.

In line with the event’s “Heroes in New Dimensions” theme, Samsung (booths A070 and B070 in Hall 10.1 and booth A055-A in Hall 09.1) will offer players a look at the future of virtual competition with its new CFG70 curved gaming monitor. The CFG70 (24-inch model) combines crystal-clear picture quality with a range of user-friendly features to create an immersive, lifelike environment designed to impress even the most hardcore gamers.

“As developers incorporate advanced features into their newest titles, dedicated video game consumers need high-quality displays to amplify these enhancements and make them feel as if they are part of the game,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The CFG70 represents the latest evolution of our pioneering gaming monitor technology, and adds unparalleled presentation and realism to the gaming experience. At Gamescom 2016, we invite attendees to see first-hand how our curved displays bring today’s most popular video game titles to life.”

A Broader Gameplay Arena

The CFG70 monitor’s “Super Arena” design invites gamers to experience the thrill of victory from multiple perspectives. Featuring 1800R curvature (indicating a curvature radius of 1,800 mm.) and a uniform 178-degree wide viewing angle, the CFG70 envelops players across the entire screen and brings previously hidden colors and game details to life. Integrated sound interactive LED lighting complements this enhanced picture presentation and further fosters gamer immersion.

Gamers also benefit from the CFG70’s continuity features that ensure uninterrupted interaction. The CFG70 is the industry’s first gaming monitor to offer 1m/s moving picture response time, providing a consistent, real-time display across the entire screen. A 144 Hz refresh rate additionally drives seamless transitions as games progress.

An Intuitive Interface

For added game management convenience, Samsung has equipped the CFG70 monitor with its user-friendly Gaming UX OSD interface. During competition, gamers can view and adjust all essential settings – ranging from response time to refresh rate – through a single-source on-screen dashboard. A series of easily-accessible shortcut hot keys located on the front and back of the monitor give gamers even more options to quickly update frequently-used gameplay parameters.

Longer and More Comfortable Competition

Samsung’s latest curved gaming monitor additionally is designed to reduce visual fatigue and encourage longer gameplay sessions. The CFG70’s flicker-free technology prevents strenuous display inconsistencies, and a complementary Eye Saver Mode feature safeguards users from harmful blue light emissions. To further reduce input latency, stutter and lag, and generate a consistent picture, the new monitor’s embedded AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI® functionality synchronizes screen refresh rates with users’ AMD graphics cards.

Outside of its own Gamescom 2016 booth, several of Samsung’s partners also will feature its curved gaming monitors at their show floor stations, including:

Bethesda Softworks (booths A051 and B050 in Hall 08.1 )

Crytek (booths B011 and C012 in Hall 02.1)

ESL Gaming/Turtle Entertainment (booths A050-A053 in Hall 09.1)

Ubisoft (multiple booths in Hall 06.1)

Xbox (also demonstrating Samsung’s UHD monitors at its booth in Hall 8)

Imagine the setting … you are lining up for a penalty kick that can win soccer’s prestigious World Cup. You are staring down one of the best goalies in the world so intently that you can see the color of his eyes. The crowd is cheering loudly behind you, complementing the bright green grass and blinding lights.

Through enhanced immersion and presentation, Samsung’s new curved gaming monitors can make this scenario a reality (or at least a virtual one). The company signaled its entry into the gaming market with the release of its first curved, competition-designed monitors – the CF591, CF391 and CF390 displays – earlier this year, introducing a host of technologies designed to elevate the gaming experience.

Samsung’s play for gamers comes as the industry reaches unprecedented heights. Entering 2016, the Entertainment Software Association estimated video games to be a $23.5 billion industry in the U.S. alone. Additionally, as gaming tournaments have evolved from quiet cyber forums to must-see events held at arenas such as Madison Square Garden, prominent global television networks such as TBS and ESPN have added e-sports to their broadcast slate.

With the launch of its CF591, CF391 and CF390 displays, Samsung aims to deliver a refined gaming environment that players will find engaging and comfortable … and a step up from the flat-screen formats the industry has become accustomed to. Samsung’s curved gaming monitors feature an 1800R curvature radius that delivers panoramic and immersive viewing angles. Furthermore, the curved format is designed to match the natural shape of the human eye, ensuring a less strenuous experience conducive for long-term play.

Appropriately, Samsung decided to make its innovative monitors available for first-hand experience at the industry’s newest, consumer-focused gaming convention. Hosted by Electronic Arts (EA) Games, the inaugural EA Play conference invited gamers to preview its latest titles and build excitement for the future of competition during a three-day event held in mid-June in downtown Los Angeles.

During the event, EA demonstrated the latest editions of Titanfall 2, Madden 17, FIFA 17 and NHL 17 on Samsung’s CF591 curved monitor, giving new perspective to some of the industry’s most recognizable titles. From the show floor, both gamers and developers enjoyed the enhanced presentation and gaming experience the curved monitors offered, marking a welcome component to a three-day stretch celebrating the future of gaming … one Samsung is helping redefine.

Seeing is Believing

EA Play offered many attendees their first experience with a curved gaming monitor. Many within this audience said they typically compete on flat-screen monitors, PCs or televisions, and were thrilled to see a realistic and captivating game presentation brought to life through a compact screen. If anything, the EA Play demo stations piqued gamers’ curiosity – most in attendance said they would like to sample other titles in this format, and learn more about how the curved format can improve their gameplay.

In certain cases, the curved displays became a “must-have” at EA Play. A special QR code promotion attached to each demo monitor directed participants to a product page while simultaneously offering a sales discount. Monday’s crowd alone saw several attendees take advantage of the promotion, transforming their future gaming experience on the spot.

What Gamers Want

Show floor conversations indicated that gamers seem aligned on the components of the ideal gaming experience – continuity, realism, visual depth and a presentation they can stay focused on long-term. Overall, attendees found that Samsung’s curved gaming monitors not only met, but exceeded their expectations along these criteria.

Gamers cited the CF591 monitor’s lack of glare as a clear advantage. Supported by a 3,000:1 contrast ratio that produces darker blacks and reduces light leakage, the CF591 is designed to amplify color depth without distraction. In both the sports (Madden, NHL and FIFA) and virtual combat (Titanfall) settings, gamers were delighted by the refined visual continuity and ability to continue playing without averting their eyes.

Likewise, EA Play participants uniformly were impressed by the curved monitors’ immersive presentation. Gamers on hand cited a more realistic feel than they had previously experienced on a flat screen, and felt that the expanded visual depth added new, previously unavailable visual elements. The result, many said, was a greater connection to the game and a desire to explore previously untapped components (for instance, new football plays or virtual worlds).

Developing Success

The benefits of Samsung’s curved gaming monitors were not only evident to the players on hand. Game developers and brand managers additionally recognize the potential differentiating advantages of these modern displays as well. In fact, the teams at EA Play said they were immediately wowed by their respective games’ presentation during their initial tests on the curved monitor and considered it vital to offer this environment to show attendees.

Given its recent growth, the gaming industry is more crowded than ever, making it more of a challenge for individual titles to maintain and build audience share. Likewise, gamers expect annual titles such as Madden or FIFA to deliver something new and advanced from the previous version. Curved monitors, such as Samsung’s CF591, can help developers and brand managers satisfy these customer demands. In offering customers a visual experience like they’ve never seen before, gaming developers and brand managers can promote curved technology as a necessary differentiator.

From the initial feedback at EA Play 2016, Samsung’s first foray into the gaming market can be considered a rousing success. Gamers were awed, intrigued and captivated by the company’s new curved monitors, creating new opportunities for both Samsung and the gaming industry to continue evolving further.

Gaming mavens unable to make it Los Angeles for EA Play still can get in the game this summer. A Samsung bundle promotion will offer any U.S. or European consumer who purchases a new Samsung CF39 Series or CF591 curved gaming monitor a complimentary copy of a select EA title, including standard edition versions of FIFA 16, Need for Speed, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline.

By expanding its presence in the gaming marketplace, Samsung Electronics will offer consumers innovative ways to get in the game. Especially with its first curved gaming monitors (the CF591, CF391 and CF390 models), Samsung expects to help transform the PC gaming experience.

First unveiled at CES in January 2016, Samsung’s curved gaming monitors are designed to match the natural shape of the human eye. This design includes a sharp 1800 mm (1800R) curvature radius that offers panoramic and immersive viewing angles and a less visually-strenuous experience. The CF591, CF391 and CF390 monitors feature a 3,000:1 contrast ratio that produces darker blacks and minimizes light leakage for a clearer and more complete on-screen presentation.

In entering the gaming market, Samsung also aims to deliver a smoother gaming experience that maintains viewers’ attention. Each of Samsung’s curved gaming monitors is supported by AMD FreeSync Technology Over HDMI®, which synchronizes screen refresh rates with users’ AMD graphics card frame rates to reduce input latency, stutter and lag.
