The Galaxy Note9 builds on Samsung Electronics’ legacy of innovative camera technologies with an intelligent camera that takes the work out of capturing the perfect photo.

Brand new functions including Scene Optimizer and Flaw Detection utilize artificial intelligence to help users get the most out of the device’s advanced camera. Together, this powerful combination of smarts and specs makes it easier than ever to snap stunning shots.

Optimal Color Every Time

Picture this: When catching a sunset during your vacation, you snap a pic with your phone only to find that the image on the screen hasn’t quite captured the majesty of the moment. The Galaxy Note9’s new Scene Optimizer function makes it easy to photograph breathtaking moments just like this by automatically optimizing camera settings to capture the full beauty of the scene.

Scene Optimizer utilizes deep-learning technology to analyze objects, scenery and time elements in the camera’s frame in order to identify exactly which type of scene you’re about to photograph. The function is currently capable of recognizing 20 types of scenes—including ‘Food’, ‘Flowers’, ‘Indoor scenes’ and ‘Landscapes’— and automatically adjusts the color tone based on how the scene is classified1.

The function corrects the saturation, white balance, brightness and contrast in order to provide the best possible image. And because it does not require a network connection, it’s always available to help make your photos look great.

Snap Flawless Photos

Even the best photos can be spoiled by a simple blink, a blur, a smudge on the lens, or by harsh, overpowering light behind the picture’s subject. That’s where the Galaxy Note9’s Flaw Detection function comes in. Once a photo has been snapped, the feature automatically scans it for flaws and notifies you if any are found2.

The function helps users capture and save more memorable moments by ensuring that the picture they take is the best possible shot. Say you’re enjoying a special evening with friends and decide to immortalize it with a fun photo. Rather than realizing later that your eyes were closed, with Flaw Detection you’ll be immediately informed of any flaws in your photo so you can capture the memory with an additional shot.

Crisp Images In Any Lighting

Whether we’re at a restaurant, a concert, or simply enjoying a balmy evening under the summer sky, we’re constantly snapping photos in low-light environments. That’s why Samsung outfitted the Galaxy Note9’s camera with an array of innovative technologies that allow it to produce stunning shots day or night.

Combining an F2.4 aperture lens with an F1.5, the brightest currently available on a smartphone, the Dual Aperture lens automatically adjusts to light just like the human eye, letting in more light when it’s dark and less when it’s bright to produce images that are crisp and clear.

The Galaxy Note9’s multi-frame processing technology adds further clarity to photos taken under less-than-ideal lighting conditions. This technology, which combines several photos into one to create an optimal image, allows the camera to provide better HDR at night, and enriches the Live Focus feature with improved brightness and noise when taking pictures in low-light environments.

Capture More Moments In Epic Detail

The Galaxy Note9’s camera also includes support for Samsung’s recently introduced Super Slow-mo function, which ramps the camera’s shutter speed up to 960 frames per second to allow users to record spectacular slow-mo videos.

Four times slower than traditional slow-motion video, Super Slow-mo is powered by the camera’s Super Speed Dual Pixel image sensor, which supports much faster image processing thanks in part to its integrated DRAM memory chip. The feature also includes an automatic Motion Detection function that instantly starts recording as soon as it detects movement.

The Galaxy Note9 allows users to transform 0.4 seconds of footage into approximately 12 seconds of Super Slow-mo video when taken in single shot mode3. Once a video is recorded, the feature automatically adds appropriate background music that makes the recorded moment even more epic.

More Customizable AR Emoji

The Galaxy Note9 is absolutely packed with innovations that empower users’ creativity and self-expression, and the camera’s refined AR Emoji feature is one of the most dynamic examples of this.

Capable of mimicking users’ movements in addition to supporting dozens of pre-set expressions, AR Emoji stickers offer a fun way to express yourself and inject personality into messages. The Galaxy Note9 analyzes your distinct facial features to generate a 3D avatar that matches your appearance.

The feature, whose face-tracking function was recently enriched with more landmark detector points, has been enhanced for the Galaxy Note9 with an array of customization options that make it easier for AR Emojis to copy your distinct style. With loads of new outfits and accessories to choose from, as well as the ability to fine-tune details like your hair style, skin tone and facial features, the opportunities for expression are endless.

Galaxy Note9 users will also be able to customize the backgrounds of their stickers with an array of new options, and enjoy access to Samsung and partners like Disney’s ever-growing roster of AR Emojis based on iconic cartoon characters—a roster that’s set to become even more fun and diverse with the feature’s open SDK (software development kit).

1Accuracy may differ by settings and surrounding conditions.

2Accuracy of Flaw Detection function may differ depending on surrounding conditions or subject. Blink detection works within 1.5 meters and a maximum of 3 people are detectable at the same time. Blur detection feature senses when the camera shakes, and recognizes face blur in the photo.

3Video is initially recorded at 480fps and digitally converted into 960fps footage.

As the days draw nearer to the holidays, and family and friends gather together to celebrate, there are countless moments to cherish. With a broad array of features, the Galaxy Note8 camera allows you to easily and conveniently hold on to these memories in vivid detail. After all, the most wonderful time of the year calls for the most wonderful pictures to remember it by.

With lights, glitter and tinsel aplenty, it’s not always easy to achieve the perfect nighttime shot of the holiday decorations adorning city centers and homes. To the naked eye, the lights may shine brightly against the night sky, but in a photo, they can appear dull and undefined.

The Galaxy Note8’s dual camera is equipped with a fast F1.7 wide-angle lens with Dual Pixel technology and an F2.4 telephoto lens, which together are able to quickly and accurately pinpoint the subject the user is focusing on. Thus, the camera can capture sharper and brighter shots even in low light environments – where holiday lights and decorations tend to look their best.

What’s more, both 12MP lenses of the dual camera are outfitted with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) which ensures crisp, focused images in all lighting conditions, even when you’re shooting with an unsteady hand (which is often the case during the frigid winter months).

Whether it’s capturing the excitement for the new year or a special moment with loved ones, photos stand out in sharp relief with Live Focus. The tool creates a bokeh effect, making the subject of the photo stand out in stunning detail, while blurring its surroundings beautifully into the background.

Left: Before adjusting blur, Right: After adjusting blur

To switch on the effect, select the Live Focus option, positioned above the camera shutter button in preview mode. Make sure to stand about four feet away from the subject of the picture, and use the sliding gauge which appears above to adjust the level of the blur effect to your liking. Should you decide after taking the photo to remove the blur, or alter its intensity, you can do so in the Gallery app.

In Dual Capture mode, both the phone’s rear wide-angle and telephoto lenses work simultaneously to capture two separate images. You can then access both zoomed-in and wide-angle versions of the shot from the Gallery so you don’t miss any of the magic happening outside the frame.

Top: Close-up, Bottom: Wide Angle

If you plan to overindulge on seasonal eats and treats this holiday season, make sure they look as delicious as they taste.

Before you bite into it, emphasize and enhance the colors of the centerpiece cake by snapping a photo of it in Food Mode. Just swipe left in preview mode to bring up a range of options and tap Food. Find the tastiest looking treat to be the focus of your photo. Then tap on the screen or drag the circle to move the highlighted area to that spot.

Left: Auto Focus, Right: Food Mode

Create even more professional-looking images with a range of adjustable features in Pro Mode. Swipe left in preview mode and tap Pro to open up the range of options: ISO, Shutter Speed, Color Tone, Manual Focus, White Balance and Exposure Compensation. With Pro Mode, there’s no need to lug around your DSLR camera on the family winter vacation; get professional-quality images with the Galaxy Note8!

Top: Auto Focus, Bottom: Pro Mode

Looking for a way to add some warming winter spice to your pictures? Enhance your selfies with holiday-themed stickers. Simply tap STICKERS just below the preview screen and select one that best suits your shot. Alternatively, jazz up your photo using the Live Message feature. Give yourself celebratory 2018 headbands, write a holiday greeting or add a festive doodle right on your photo with the S Pen, then share it with a friend to spread instant holiday cheer.

Live Message: photo edited using stickers and S-pen

Featuring Samsung’s best-in-class dual camera, with dual OIS on both lenses, along with Live Focus, Dual Capture and Live Message features, the Galaxy Note8 is the ultimate device for taking photos that are crisp and clear, and capturing special holiday moments in the way you want to remember them for years to come. Happy holidays!

Samsung has once again set the standard for smartphone cameras in terms of both hardware and software with the Galaxy Note8 – the first smartphone with two 12MP rear cameras with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) on both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

With 2X optical and up to 10X digital zooming capabilities, images are crisp and clear, even when shot at far distances or in low lighting conditions. Furthermore, new Live Focus and Dual Capture features give users added creative control over their images.

The Dual Camera—What It Is and Why It Matters

Like its name suggests, a dual camera is made up of two separate cameras and their respective image sensors that work in a complimentary way to each other.

Generally, one camera functions more or less like a normal camera, capturing color images in the same way most typical smartphone cameras do. The second camera, meanwhile, aims to add elements that can’t be captured with the primary sensor. When a user takes a photo, the camera captures two separate images. It is the combination of both of these images that produces a clear, high-quality photograph with a greater depth of field.

Correspondingly, the dual camera of the Galaxy Note8 utilizes both the phone’s rear wide-angle lens and telephoto lens simultaneously to produce optimal results.

What’s Zoom Got to Do With It?

With 2X optical and 10X digital zooming capabilities, the dual camera of the Galaxy Note 8 is able to capture clear, high-quality close-up shots.

This is because its telephoto lens uses the optics of the camera, or the optical zoom, to make the subject appear closer without enlarging any portion of the in the way that a digital zoom does. In doing so, the optical zoom produces professional-looking images without losing quality, even if the subject is far away. So, for instance, if taking a picture of a band during a concert, a user can use the camera of the Galaxy Note8 to zoom in to see the details on the stage.

Photos That Stand Out From the Rest

In addition to its zooming capabilities, the dual camera, with its fast F1.7 wide-angle lens with Dual Pixel technology and F2.4 telephoto lens, quickly and accurately pinpoints the subject the user is focusing on, and thus is able to capture sharper and brighter shots even in low light environments.

Also, with dual OIS, users can get crisp, focused images in all lighting conditions, even when they’re shooting with an unsteady hand.

Additional new Galaxy Note8 camera features also give users creative license to produce unique photographs that stand out from the rest.

For example, with Live Focus, users can adjust the bokeh effect – the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image – to change the depth of field of a shot. Users can control the intensity of the overall blur effect and apply it before taking the image in preview mode, or after capturing the photo in the Gallery app.

While many users prefer to make their subjects stand out by blurring the scenery around them, sometimes the background is just as important, such as when photographing a loved one in front of a famous world landmark. In Dual Capture mode, both the phone’s rear wide-angle and telephoto lenses work simultaneously to capture two separate images. Users can then access both zoomed-in and wide-angle versions of the shot from the Gallery.

The Galaxy Note8 is also equipped with an industry-leading F1.7 8MP autofocus front-facing camera for sharp selfies and video chats. Its bright lens keeps details clear even in low light, while Smart Auto Focus tracks the faces in the shot.

Incorporating Samsung’s best-in-class dual camera, with dual OIS on both lenses, along with new Live Focus and Dual Capture features, the Galaxy Note8 is the ultimate device for taking photos that are crisp, clear and capture special moments in the way users want to remember them.

With the Auto camera mode of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, you can produce optimal photographs without having to further adjust the camera’s settings. This rings true in all lighting conditions, even in low-light and backlit environments, and requires only a tap of the shutter button.

However, should you want to spice things up with a bit of flair, there are plenty of new and improved functions and modes that add style and originality to photographs and videos. These features not only add a new element of fun, but are easy to use. Find out how below.

Pro Mode: Get Technical with It

For those more versed in the technicalities of photography, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge′s Pro mode lets users dial things in DSLR-like fashion, with control of exposure, shutter speed, ISO and white balance to more accurately produce one’s desired results.

Also, by applying its new Dual Pixel technology, Samsung enabled a Multi AF function on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge that offers responsive and fast autofocus performance under all lighting conditions.

In Camera, select MODE > Pro.

Tap the various icons to adjust settings accordingly.

Food Mode: Full-Flavored Photos

Previously only available through download, Food mode now comes pre-installed on the latest Galaxy devices. Because who doesn’t love snapping and sharing images of their lunch with the world? Use it to take drool-worthy images that emphasize the vivid colors of intricate desserts, “homemade” meals and artisanal cocktails.

In Camera, select MODE > Food.

Tap on the screen or drag the circle to move the highlighted area.

More Fun with Motion Panorama

With the all-new Motion Panorama mode, conventional still panorama shots are brought to life by capturing moving objects.

For example, during a hike, you can capture not only a panoramic view of the mountains, but also the movements of trees swaying in the wind and birds flying through the frame. Likewise, use it at a soccer stadium to capture an active, wide angle view of the big game. After all, it’s these little moments that make such experiences memorable.

In Camera, select MODE > Panorama.

At the top of the screen, tap the Motion On icon. Select On.

Tap the Camera button and take a panoramic shot by moving the device in one direction.

To view the video clip, locate the image in Gallery.

Tap the Motion Panorama icon at the top right of the screen.

Tilt your phone or swipe the screen to interactively view the animated image.

You can share Motion Panorama as a video file or an image file.

Motion Photo: Moments On the Move

The same motion effect can also be applied to standard images. By enabling Motion Photo, you can record a short video clip of the brief action leading up to the captured moment. Or, in the case that you don’t press the shutter at the right second, you can extract the best frame from the video, and share or print it. This is especially handy for capturing those time-sensitive moments, such as baby’s first steps or the grand finale at a fireworks show.

In Settings, select Applications > Camera.

Turn on Motion Photo.

In Camera, tap the Camera button and take a photograph as you normally would.

To view the video clip, locate the photograph in Gallery.

Tap the Motion Photo icon at the top right of the screen.

Hyperlapse: Go Full Speed

The Hyperlapse mode in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge has been vastly improved in terms of image quality, stability and visibility compared to the former Fast Motion mode. Hyperlapse automatically selects stabilized frames by analyzing the recorded video, changing the video speed according to the movement of the scene, and compressing it to a shorter format.

So, whether you want to capture a seaside sunset or a neighborhood walk-through, Hyperlapse is the way to do it.

In Camera, select MODE > Hyperlapse.

Tap Record button. (The time displayed in parenthesis on the right side shows the actual time of recorded footage, while the time on the left shows the length of the video after the Hyperlapse effect is applied.)

Tap Stop icon and save.

Pick a Mode, Any Mode

In addition to the previously mentioned default modes, you can also add other modes by selecting Download at the top of the MODE menu.

Dual Camera mode is one example. While the previous version only displayed the photographer and photographed subject in the same still image, the upgraded version now uses multitracking to allow for simultaneous video recording from the front and rear cameras. Both videos can then be applied to a single screen to create one single video clip.

In Camera, select MODE > Dual Camera.

Tap the Dual Camera icon at the top of the screen. Select your preferred shape and drag it to your selected location on the screen.

Tap the Camera button to take a picture or the Record button to take a video.

To view, locate the video (or still image) in Gallery, then tap the Dual Camera icon.

At the bottom of the screen of the video, choose Single view, where you can switch back and forth between the recorded videos, or Dual view to watch them both at the same time. (Still images can only be viewed one at a time.)

Not only have the features and filters of the newest Galaxy mobile cameras been updated, but the camera UI has, as well. As such, you can easily arrange your favorite camera modes according to your preference to make the mobile photography experience easier and more efficient than ever. Happy shooting!
