Samsung Electronics introduces “Our Digital Creators: An overview of Samsung’s Corporate Citizenship Programme in Europe 2016.” The brochure is full of stories drawn from Samsung’s most influential and inspiring educational projects, and contains quotes from educational partners, teachers and students across each of the 17 markets that hosted Samsung’s initiatives.

Samsung’s goal over the last three years has been simple: to use technology to transform the educational experience and empower young people to become the innovators of tomorrow. The results of these experiences, and the critical role Samsung has played in incorporating technology into education, are reflected in the observations of participating educators like Jacqueline Willer, Head Teacher at London’s Henwick Primary School.

“I can remember walking past a classroom and seeing the children completely and utterly focused, heads down, completely immersed in their learning,” she recalls. “It was such a marked difference from how I’d seen that class learning the year before.”

A Commitment to Digital Education

This is a time of unprecedented change, and it is Samsung’s belief that technology is a driving force behind this transformation. When used in the right way – generously, and with good intentions – technology can be a powerful force for good.

Samsung’s vision has always been to create shared value, especially through our corporate citizenship programs, where our ambition is: “To devote our human resources and technology to create superior products and services, thereby contributing to a greater global society.”

As outlined throughout the brochure, this commitment has been expressed through years of initiatives spanning employment, digital creation, connected classrooms, museum partnerships and issues of social awareness.

Addressing regional problems with locally relevant technological solutions is the backbone and strength of our citizenship programs. This strategy has enabled us to reach nearly 400,000 direct beneficiaries through over 1,600 Smart Classroom and 80 Digital Classroom programs. In just three years, we have advanced a movement for technology in education with initiatives such as Samsung Campus, Beat the Street and Coding Masters Junior.

Coding Masters Junior has effected changes in the Polish education system that will ultimately help more students develop valuable digital skills. As a result of that project, beginning in September 2017, programming courses will be included in students’ core curriculums from the first grade of primary school on.

Samsung Campus, another enriching initiative, is a free, two-year course open to 18- to 25-year-olds who have a passion for technology but may not have received opportunities to pursue it. The program focuses on developing programming skills to help students secure employment, and welcomed its inaugural class in September of 2014. Since graduation, 68 percent have found employment, and the remaining 32 percent have elected to pursue further training.

In July, in collaboration with German publishing house Cornelsen, Samsung organized a roundtable for developers and educators to discuss integrating VR technology into the classroom. Interactive VR apps were designed and presented, with the winning concepts tested at six select schools. The project yielded the first-ever VR app designed specifically for classroom use, and established prototypes with which to design immersive lessons to cover a variety of school subjects and reach as many students as possible.

With OFF4ADAY, Samsung, in partnership with Moige (the Italian Parents Movement) and the Italian State Police, established the country’s first helpline to support victims of cyberbullying – an issue affecting a third of Italian teenagers. OFF4ADAY has so far helped more than 2,000 teens, and taken measures to raise awareness in schools that have seen cyberbullying-related web searches increase by 60 percent.

Finally, in the Netherlands, where 18 percent of traffic accidents involving youngsters are caused by distractions from smartphones, Samsung teamed up with traffic safety organization Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) to create the ‘Beat the Street’ virtual reality game. The game, which provides crucial lessons on traffic safety and the dangers of distracted smartphone use via immersive VR, has so far reached some 4.5 million citizens.

A New Chapter of Influence

Technology is an ever-evolving field, and Samsung’s citizenship activities are no different. We’re currently on track to meet our pledge, made to the European Commission’s Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs, to reach 400,000 people by December 2016, and we’re now shifting our focus to the future. This brochure closes one chapter of our citizenship story, focused on quantity, and initiates a new vision focused on quality, innovation and partnerships.

Samsung will focus resources on a network of lighthouse schools that will serve as shining examples of the future of education, and enhance its technology and education partnerships by bringing 3D printing and VR technology into more classrooms.

The stories found in the pages of this brochure pay tribute to the countless people – spanning local NGOs, governments and experts in education – who are as passionate and committed to making a difference as we are.

When we work together with shared ambitions and focus, we truly can achieve the incredible. The “Our Digital Creators” report is available in its entirety via the attachment below.

Today, the 5th of October, is World Teacher’s Day.

As a technology company, Samsung Electronics is devoted to preparing the next generation of innovators with the digital and soft skills they need.

Samsung Electronics is just one piece of the wider global network of businesses, governments and civil society supporting teachers and working towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.

Education in Europe

In Europe, one of the biggest issues is high youth unemployment.

Following the financial crisis; too many young people are at risk of being left behind without the skills that their future jobs demand. Education systems sometimes struggle to respond to the changing needs of employers and teachers often lack the support and confidence to adapt how they teach to match the increasingly digital world.

This is why over the last three years, Samsung Electronics has partnered with over 19,000 teachers in Smart Classrooms all over Europe to equip them with the hardware, software and training they need to empower the next generation.

Therefore, on World Teacher’s Day, Samsung Electronics wants to celebrate the teachers who have broken down barriers and gone beyond expectations to use technology to change the face of education.

Erwin Oertli, Switzerland

Going from a zero-wifi school to a lighthouse of digital education, Head teacher Mr. Oertli has broken down many educational barriers!

Based on their experiences as Samsung Citizenship partner in Unteriberg, 2000 Samsung tablets were rolled out to the students and teachers across the district, but the schools still needed to train the teachers in a short space of time. Head teacher Mr. Oertli knew, that teacher training is the keys for a successful implementation and saw an opportunity to completely switch around the school learning experience.

“I asked students from Unteriberg to do a tech savvy training for teachers to help them understand their devices”

Erwin Oertli is an early adopter and has successfully trained 200 teachers in the biggest 1:1 tablet project in Switzerland. He is an inspiration to how flexibility and creativity can ensure students never miss out on opportunities to use learn digital skills.

Benjamin Seelisch, Germany

Transforming a school with no wifi and limited funding into a school using the latest technological innovation; this teacher has been taking Neues Gymnasium Rüsselsheim, a secondary school near Frankfurt, on a digital journey since 2011.

Benjamin Seelisch has worked tirelessly to convince the headmaster, find funding and sponsorship to develop this Lighthouse School. The school now has 350 tablets in daily use and the school has won many awards. This teacher continues to be brave and push the boundaries of education as he embarks on his latest project to use VR in the classroom.

“Students are well able to use modern devices on a basic level, only a few know how to work with tablets to increase productivity. Those skills are important for our students when they go on to universities or companies after graduation.”

Liliya Chausheva, Bulgaria

This one teacher has inspired over 300 other educators!

After receiving training from Samsung, she used her passion for expanding digital education to run 15 further trainings. Using the Samsung platform smartclassroom.bg she trained teachers how to attract students to the classroom, inspire them with the technology and embed digital education into their entire learning experience.

Her dedication to passing on her knowledge has potentially changed the learning experience for thousands of students around Bulgaria.

“Digital education is the future. Our students nowadays spend more time online than ever. As their teachers and role models we have to be prepared as well and make educational process attractive, interesting and still productive.

Samsung Electronics partners with many more teachers like these shown above. Future growth of technology in education will continue to bring to the surface these ambitious teachers. They are brave enough to move beyond traditional teaching methods of blackboards and workbooks, to bring the digital world to life for their students.

For the past 3 years, Samsung Electronics has offered a unique skills-building program for teachers across Poland. The program, Coding Masters, teaches participants how to code and create their own digital content, enhancing their creative problem solving capabilities and building their confidence in the classroom. To date, Coding Masters has helped more than 3,000 Polish teachers improve their digital skills, and in turn, impart what they’ve learned to 100,000 students across the country.

From Coding Masters to the Global Teacher Prize

One teacher, Jolanta Okuniewska, has completely changed her approach to teaching thanks to the Coding Masters program. A participant every year since the pilot edition of Coding Masters, Ms. Okuniewska is passionate about teaching her students to code. By incorporating coding, along with digital puzzles and games, Ms. Okuniewska is now setting new trends with her teaching methods.

“A tablet nowadays is as common as a pencil case,” said Okuniewska. “While maybe not seen as a necessity, tablet education definitely makes learning more interesting and effective by providing a huge range of tools in one place that is accessible at the touch of a finger.”

For her efforts, Ms. Okuniewska was nominated for the Global Teacher Prize. The Global Teacher Prize is a prestigious award acknowledging teachers who have made outstanding contributions to their profession. It’s amazing to have even been nominated, let alone being one of only 50 teachers selected from a pool of 8,000 instructors from 148 countries.

Continuing to Change the Face of Polish Education

New technology can be a wonderful educational tool for kids. They can use it to search for information, communicate with teachers and friends and play interactive games. With the great success of the Coding Masters program, Samsung continues to help change the face of Polish education with other new initiatives, including Samsung Labo (dedicated to students) and the Coding Master Junior (dedicated to preschoolers).

As Blanka Fijolek, a Coding Masters founder, explained: “In Poland, there are ongoing discussions on including coding in a national curriculum for the younger students. It is important to ensure trainings for the teachers and create conditions for them to share their experiences.”

There’s no denying that technology can wow us with amazing experiences – virtual reality headsets, driverless cars, smart fridges – but as the pace of innovation quickens new research from Samsung Electronics shows Europeans are struggling to keep up with the changing language of tech. The new study from Samsung Europe shows that while excitement around technology is growing, the industry faces a growing risk of leaving consumers behind with confusing tech terminology.

Europeans are embracing the digital revolution like never before, with 52% of people revealing that they use technology much more than two years ago, and 13% admitting they couldn’t live without it. Over half of the 10,000 people surveyed across Europe are excited by the latest innovations like the Cloud or the Internet of Things, but nearly three quarters (72%) admitted that they often pretend to know what the latest tech terms really mean.

Nearly a quarter of people (23%) said confusing terminology prevents them from using a product to its full potential, 43% said that they owned at least one item of technology which was more advanced than they needed and 11% feel left behind by technology.

David Lowes, CMO of Samsung Electronics Europe, said: “Our research shows that terminology used in today’s technology can be a barrier for some consumers. We are taking a number of steps to address this, including simplifying the language we use and giving 400,000 young people digital skills training. However we believe this is an industry wide issue that will stand in the way of technological progress if left unchecked.

“As we push the boundaries of mobile, digital and TV technology even further, our industry has to be mindful of how we make the benefits accessible to everyone and support those who are not yet comfortable with the latest concepts like the Internet of Things. It’s important we bring everyone with us, which is why we invest heavily in creating products that are truly smart – simple, user friendly, secure and easy to understand. We also provide straightforward customer support from our experts online and in our retail outlets.”

The research was conducted by Samsung Electronics Europe amongst more than 10,000 Europeans across 18 countries to investigate how our relationship with technology is changing as part of its ongoing research. In response to the research, Samsung Europe has created a handy glossary ‘The Plain Tech Guide’ to explain what the latest terms mean and how they help our lives.

To ensure future generations are comfortable with the latest technology, Samsung is partnering with schools and universities to facilitate enhanced learning of digital skills through two core programmes: Smart Classrooms and Tech Institutes. Samsung’s goal is to directly reach 400,000 young people across Europe by 2020 making the pledge as part of the European Commission’s Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs. So far Samsung has set up over 600 smart classrooms, 48 tech institutes and engaged over 100,000 young people. Samsung is already starting to see positive outcomes from these efforts – 1 in 4 students in Samsung’s Digital Academies gained a place in higher level training before the end of their course*.

Europeans Love Emojis

While tech language develops, so does the way people are choosing to express themselves in visual forms. Emojis have been referred to as a new international language, but the Samsung study found that many people are struggling to get to grips with what these new characters really are. Romanians were found to be least familiar with them – 27% have pretended to know more than they do about emojis, closely followed by Italy (26%). In Bulgaria however, just one in 20 (5%) admitted to overstating their emoji knowledge.

Most Useful Apps

The research also investigated the apps which Europeans find most useful. Map apps were revealed to be the app which Europeans feel have had the biggest impact on them in terms of making their lives easier – something noted by 66%. This was followed by weather apps (56%) and phone cameras (51%).

David Lowes, CMO of Samsung Electronics Europe, said: “Despite predictions of fatigue with new devices, it is encouraging to see Europeans embrace their technology like never before. It’s great that 55% of people are excited by the latest innovations like the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and we know from our sales that millions of Europeans have taken up our challenge to ‘rethink what a phone can do’. We seek to create products that are desirable, durable and user friendly, and this data is a useful reminder that we need to make sure we never let complex technical language stand in the way of useful innovation and progress.”

On March , Samsung Electronics became a board member of CSR Europe, Europe’s leading business network for Corporate Social Responsibility. Samsung has long been active in helping with the societal issues facing people across Europe—in education, employment, health and the environment—and with the election to the board of CSR Europe, Samsung is looking forward to becoming an even bigger contributor to European society.

To find out more about Samsung’s plans for the future with CSR Europe, we talked with Wouter Van Tol, Director of Sustainability and Citizenship, Europe for Samsung Electronics and Samsung’s representative to CSR Europe.

Wouter Van Tol, Director of Sustainability and Citizenship, Europe for Samsung Electronics, is talking with children during an education program.

Q. Samsung Electronics was just elected to the board of CSR Europe for the first time. Why was Samsung selected?

Over the past few years Samsung Electronics has had a meaningful impact in Europe, with hundreds of Smart Classrooms and Tech Institutes reaching more than 100,000 young people. This is a great fit with CSR Europe’s focus on youth employment and skills, and it is prime example of the sort of partnerships that the “Pact4Youth” initiative promotes.

So, I think we were selected because Samsung has shown a commitment to European society and many of Samsung’s corporate citizenship activities align with European society.

Q. What kind of activities does CSR Europe focus on and what has CSR Europe achieved?

CSR Europe has excellent links with responsible corporations as well as European governmental institutions. This gives CSR Europe “convening power”: they can bring together the right organizations to try to solve some of Europe’s most pressing problems together. We call this “Creating Shared Value”. The current “Pact4Youth” campaign is a great example of trying to bring together many societal groups to improve youth employment. CSR Europe also focuses on other important areas, like human rights and sustainable cities (which of course is relevant for Samsung’s IoT business).

Q. As a CSR Europe board member, what kind of CSR activities is Samsung Electronics planning to focus on?

Among Samsung’s range of CSR activities, we plan on focusing on Smart Classrooms and Tech Institutes, and have already started talking with other CSR Europe members about co-investing. Imagine stepping into a classroom which is five years ahead of today. Where teachers and school children use coding, VR, 3D printing and other tools to learn and create. We can’t do this alone, but being on the board of CSR Europe gives us the position to attract the best partners and make it happen.

Secondly, being on the Board will give us more and better opportunities to communicate about Samsung’s many activities in the areas of citizenship, the environment and sustainability. Through this, we will be able to better hear the opinions of others, and ensure our CSR activities are as effective as possible.

Q. Can you introduce the CSR activities that Samsung Electronics is carrying out in Europe?

Youth unemployment is an ongoing issue in Europe: according to the European Commission, about 5 million young people are unemployed, which is equal to the number of people who live in Norway. But, at the same time, there are almost 1 million ICT vacancies in Europe, and employers are desperate to hire young people with relevant digital skills.

This is where Samsung is making a difference: through more than 600 Smart Classrooms and more than 48 Tech Institutes we have so far improved the digital skills of more than 100,000 young people and 9,000 teachers. Our commitment is to have reached 400,000 young people by 2020. To find out more about Samsung’s CSR activities in Europe, please see the attached brochure.

Samsung Electronics has been recognised by global market intelligence organization IDC, as a major player, in its MarketScape report on the managed print and document services (MPDS) industry: ‘Western Europe Managed Workflow Services 2015 Hardcopy Vendor Assessment – Building on MPDS’.

“IDC’s recognition of Samsung Printing Solutions affirms our ongoing commitment to help organizations boost business efficiency by improving how they digitise paper and manage their printing,” said Paul Birkett, Director of Print Operation Sales and Marketing of Samsung Europe. “In the newest areas of mobile-first, cloud-first printing, Samsung is helping clients connect to the information they need, by merging mobile and printing technology in its Smart UX platform. This uses standard mobile apps to reduce repetitive or wasteful tasks through advanced machine-to-machine communication.”

The study is the first vendor analysis of the managed workflow services (MWS) market using the IDC MarketScape assessment tool. The report evaluates the capabilities and business strategies of leading hardcopy vendors in the Western European MWS market, and discusses the quantitative and qualitative characteristics that position vendors for success. The report also examines vendors’ capabilities of providing clients with a roadmap for higher-value workflow automation, and the optimization services required to deliver this effectively.

In particular, the IDC MarketScape report recognised Samsung’s use of emerging cloud and mobile technologies, as well as intuitive hardware products and value added services that extend beyond print. These include business process management, mobile print, mobile capture and digital signature services, which all extend Samsung’s IT portfolio. Samsung was also praised for the printing solutions partnerships and alliances it is forging worldwide.

IDC also remarked on Samsung’s ability to draw on expertise and innovation from other areas of its business, stating that its strength in consumer electronics is an advantage, because of the growing influence consumers now have in the world of work.

“Samsung’s key strengths are its application development and use of innovative solutions which include more than one Samsung product line,” IDC MarketScape reported. “Its focus on security alongside its rapid development helps the company gain traction with potential customers, while some competitors are still trying to dissipate security fears associated with solutions adoption.”

”Managed workflow services market players are continuing to develop their offerings to address challenging process workflows in their customers’ organizations,” said Jacqui Hendriks, Research and Consulting Manager, IDC European Managed Print Services and Document Solutions. “Established Western European market players have taken cautious steps and are more aggressively fulfilling customers’ functional and industry-specific workflow requirements,” she added.

For the MarketScape demonstration, Samsung focused on its new products and solutions incorporating mobile functionality and the intuitive interfaces common to multi-function printers, tablets and smartphones.

This week (October 10-18, 2015) is EU Code Week! Samsung has joined the European Coding Initiative and is running a number of activities all week to spread the word about coding. Since 2013, over 125,000 people have taken part in Samsung’s programs for digital creators in Europe. These initiatives are part of Samsung’s Corporate Citizenship activities in education and teach young people how to code and create their own digital content.

The European Coding Initiative will play a central role in a number of Europe-wide projects to promote the education of coding and computational thinking, including EU Code Week.

To mark the partnership with the European Coding Initiative, Samsung hosted a demonstration class at EU Code Week’s All You Need Is Code event in Brussels on October 12.
Sangwoo Kim, President of Corporate Affairs for Samsung Electronics Europe said, “Our vision is a world where digital making is a basic skill for every young person in Europe, along with math and literacy. We live in an increasingly digital world, and teachers and schools need to be equipped to support the transition to a connected society. We want to give young people the opportunity to be creative and to experience the joy of digital making through coding, robotics, electronics and app development. With confidence, the new generation can become creators of the digital world, not just consumers of it.”

U.K.: Samsung will be opening its fifth Code Club Hub in the U.K., offering free after-school coding clubs for children at community centers in need of technology support. Samsung has been a partner of the Code Club since 2013, also supporting the recruitment and training of volunteers to help sustain these free provisions.

Italy: Samsung Italy is hosting coding lessons at the Samsung Smart Area in Milan. On Tuesday, October 13, the results of research managed by Cattolica University of Milan on the impact of coding on students and teachers were revealed. For anyone planning to visit the Milan Expo 2015, Samsung will offer coding lessons at the Samsung TIM open space.

Poland: Samsung Poland is supporting the Polish edition of Code Week as a main partner and is organizing nearly 500 events connected to the Coding Masters program across Poland. The official opening of Code Week Poland took place in the National Audiovisual Institute. Samsung also supported the organization of the Coders’ Picnic at the Copernicus Science Center.

Norway: Samsung is a partner of Laer Kidsa Koding and its 50 code clubs will have events throughout Code Week, including a robot workshop at the University of Oslo, Code Club at Tekna in Oslo, Girls Coding Day and an Edtech day for teachers.

Finland: MehackIT is publishing blog posts of interviews with students in Lahti schools in Finland. The blog posts share experiences from students taking MehackIT coding, robotics and electronics classes.

France: On October 14, Samsung employees ran two workshops, which both hosted 25 children to introduce them to coding. Samsung France launched Campus Junior, a free online coding course for children between 7-13 years old, in May 2015.

MasterCard and Samsung Electronics announced they are extending their global partnership leveraging the MasterCard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) to deliver Samsung Pay in Europe. Samsung Pay is a mobile payment service that will enable consumers to use their Samsung flagship mobile devices to make every day in-store purchases at contactless and mag stripe terminals leveraging NFC and MST technologies. Samsung and MasterCard will together roll out Samsung Pay throughout Europe. Card issuers will be able to connect to the MDES platform and activate the Samsung Pay service upon launch. Cardholders from participating issuers can activate their credit, debit, reloadable prepaid and small business cards in the Samsung Pay service and use their mobile devices to make everyday purchases.

Earlier this year, MasterCard announced it would provide the tokenization services to Samsung Pay for its secure transactions, enabling a quick scaling connection to bank partners in the U.S. Samsung Pay is a global mobile payment solution that is the first mobile wallet to give consumers a way to shop and spend virtually anywhere – using contactless and magstripe card readers.

“Samsung Pay is pleased to join forces with MasterCard to offer a simple and safe mobile payment experience enabled for wider merchant acceptance to MasterCard cardholders and issuers in Europe,” said Injong Rhee, EVP of Samsung Electronics, Global Head of Samsung Pay. “Both organizations are committed to ground breaking fin-tech innovations that will deliver on the promise of a true mobile wallet.”

“With the continued global growth and reliance on connected mobile devices, we are delighted to expand our relationship with Samsung by extending the reach of Samsung Pay and MDES to cardholders in Europe. Europeans have been leading the way in the adoption of new ways to shop, buy and make a payment. Through our strong partnership with Samsung we look forward to continuing to drive innovation in mobile commerce by creating simple and secure digital payment experiences for consumers,” said Javier Perez, President of MasterCard Europe.

Samsung Pay is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and South Korea later this summer and Samsung is currently working with banks and partners to bring the payment service to Europe.

Since the announcement of MDES in 2013, millions of MasterCard accounts have been tokenized for use in popular digital wallet services. MDES currently provides tokenization services for credit, debit, co-brand, prepaid and small business cards. Private label tokenization, announced last month, will begin in the third quarter of this year. Tokenization services for app, eCommerce, and recurring billing card-on-file programs will be available to U.S. and Canadian merchants later this year and expand globally across all MDES-enabled markets.
