As homes have evolved, the kitchen has become a hub for social activity and family gatherings. No longer confined to just cooking and eating, the modern kitchen sits adjacent to living spaces, blurring the boundaries between functional areas in homes. Today’s kitchens serve as shared spaces where families commune, have fun and express their individuality. As the role of the kitchen has transformed, so too have its appliances — taking new leaps to meet the demands of a more connected and multifunctional space. For instance, the refrigerator has now become central to the family. With the introduction of door screens and IoT features through Family Hub in 2016, the refrigerator industry has changed forever. Fridges now let us enjoy art, entertainment and even shopping.

In 2023, Family Hub came back in a new shape and form, known as the Plus. The larger 32-inch display and the wide array of features were jam-packed with designers’ thoughtful and innovative ideas. The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+ truly unveils new lifestyles that directly impact us in bigger and more joyful ways. Here’s a look at the design decisions that made this all possible.

Why Is Family Hub+ Bigger?

Family Hub+ features a 32-inch full HD touchscreen that is 2.1x bigger than the previous 21.5-inch display. Now, what is the reasoning behind a bigger screen?

Adapting to the New Normal

The pandemic has forced many of us to spend more time at home, leading to a surge in creative ways to utilize our living spaces. The kitchen, for example, has evolved beyond a space for cooking and eating to become a multifunctional hub for family communication, hobbies and other everyday needs. As a result, our relationship with kitchen appliances, such as the fridge, has also changed. The refrigerator is the perfect partner that fits the modern role of the kitchen and has become a platform that provides services we need to align with these new lifestyles. We require more from our appliances than ever before. With its expanded screen and experiences, Family Hub+ has adapted to become an essential part of this new flow between the kitchen and our daily lives.

Bigger Screen, Better Attention to Detail

Bigger screens mean greater attention to detail. For instance, the 32-inch display needed to be accessible to both children and wheelchair users, so the bottom portion of the display was positioned to be mindful of these users’ needs. The top of the display was raised, but the Accessible Screen feature lets users tap the home button twice to bring down the top portion of the screen. The panel surrounding the screen was carefully fitted to make sure the details on the edges were smooth. The mic at the bottom was also moved upwards so that every detail we need to see — or what we don’t — is precisely designed into the form.

How Is Family Hub+ More User-Friendly?

A great amount of thought was put into creating a refrigerator design that could harmonize with its surroundings and other appliances.

Adding Tangible Taste to Every Touch

A wide variety of panel materials are available to choose from, allowing users to design a refrigerator that feels best to their touch. The satin glass is velvety in texture, offering both comfort and glow, while the glam glass brightens any environment with its high gloss surface. Metal embodies Millennial sentiments through a subtle, monotone finish. Panels are easily interchangeable1 so that a single refrigerator base can support a wide range of styles.

Visual Comfort

Both from the inside and outside, the refrigerator intends to instill a sense of cohesiveness that would be found in a beautiful piece of standalone furniture. The inner mood light2 is positioned to put more emphasis on the stored food within. Lighting is spread out evenly through the insides of the refrigerator to give visual comfort and illuminate the innermost parts of the appliance.

How Can We Bring Greater Joy?

A bigger screen means there’s more content to consume, allowing every moment spent with Family Hub+ to be filled with joy.

Embracing Every Taste

We often pass by our refrigerator throughout the day — but the door remains mostly closed, leaving an empty space that could be put to better use. With Family Hub+, we can transform that blank canvas to become a source of creativity by hanging up a beautiful piece of art. Working in collaboration with renowned galleries and artists, Samsung offers a diverse selection of Bespoke Atelier3 pieces to suit a wide range of tastes. These works of art are thoughtfully organized by year, theme and movement, making it easy to find the perfect style for any kitchen.

The Bespoke Atelier pieces can serve as beautiful artwork on their own or even as part of an in-house exhibition. When new galleries open, invitation letters are sent right to your fridge, which can be accepted and enjoyed through the hub display. By using Family Hub+ to bring art into the heart of our home, we can add a touch of color, beauty and inspiration to our daily lives, all through a bigger display.

Seamless Experiences

In today’s busy world, families need a constant source of entertainment and information in the spaces where they gather. That’s why Family Hub+ features a larger display, allowing families to multitask while enjoying their favorite content. With Samsung TV Plus,4 one of Samsung’s most popular apps, viewers can now move the screen to the top, middle or bottom of the display to ensure it’s at eye level. The Picture in Picture feature allows users to browse the web or search for recipes while still playing their favorite show or movie in the background.

Family Hub+ is not just limited to TV. Mobile content can be streamed via Smart View without compromising screen ratios. This feature lets users share content on their mobile devices with each other in real time. Families can pull up photos on the Family Hub+ display through the Gallery app or Google Photos to showcase them on the spot. These various content experiences will enrich every moment you spend in the kitchen.

How Is Family Hub+ More Convenient?

As the smart home becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, Family Hub+ sits at the heart of this transformation.

Hub for the Smart Home

IoT connections drastically improve convenience, giving us more freedom to enjoy leisurely activities. The 32-inch display shows bigger widgets that each lets you monitor and control the various devices inside your home. Family Hub+ also comes with a built-in SmartThings Hub that can serve as the focal point of your smart home. SmartThings Home services5 like Cooking, Clothing Care, Home Care, Pet Care, Energy and Air Care are all easily within reach via Family Hub+ to streamline your routine and simplify your day.

Smarter Cooking

You might sometimes find yourself looking through the fridge with no idea what to cook for dinner. These situations call for the Cooking Board. The SmartThings Cooking service provides recipes based on the available food and cooking appliances in your kitchen. It also sends optimized cooking directions to your appliances to make sure the temperatures and cooking durations are just right. The recipe option, one of the features of the SmartThings Cooking service, gives you a snapshot of the steps needed to create each dish. Cooking on your own is no longer daunting with the hub.

Shopping Through the Fridge

What should you do when you’re strapped for time and are running low on jelly or need ketchup for dinner tomorrow? Now, you can easily reorder your household favorites with the click of a button on your refrigerator door via Amazon Your Essentials. Simply look up the item through the Your Essentials button on the home screen to see the product details. Shopping through your refrigerator is now easier than ever.

While the refrigerator has served as merely a place to store food, the fridge door has long been a source of family communication, whether adorned with sticky notes, magnets or the latest masterpieces from our kids. With Family Hub+, Samsung sought to capture this essence while crafting a product suited for the modern kitchen. Behind every expanded experience on the larger screen lies a designer’s careful deliberation, resulting in a truly immersive and delightful experience. The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+ is at the forefront of innovation, bringing endless possibilities to customers’ lives.

Boldly drawn lines and vivid colors within an artwork can grab a person’s attention. As the viewer interacts with the artwork, they can see through the artist’s eyes and get a glimpse into their unique perspective.

The artworks below were created in collaboration with the Special Designers of KIMUSTUDIO (KIMU), an organization breaking down societal barriers through content. The Special Designers are a team of designers with developmental disabilities who are working to create unique and captivating works of art for the world.

Now, their works of art can be seen on a variety of Samsung Electronics’ art platforms. Samsung and KIMUSTUDIO have come together to unveil a new, special project with the goal of bringing KIMU’s unique, aesthetic pieces and values to the daily lives of consumers. To find out more about the Drawing Diversity Project, Samsung Newsroom met with the project members and learned about the team and how this collaboration came together.

▲ (From the left) KIMUSTUDIO’s CEO Jang-won Nam, Manager Ran Hur, Designer Taegyu Lee, Designer ByungHun Song, Yeonji Chee and Bora Kim from Samsung’s Corporate Sustainability Center pose in front of KIMU Atelier located in the Seongsu neighborhood of Seoul.

Art Platform Contents: Simply Consuming Art Expands the Value of D&I

“We thought long and hard about what Samsung’s consumers can do in their daily lives to join us in making a better future,” said Bora Kim from the Corporate Sustainability Center, who planned the Drawing Diversity Project. “We thought that if we can uphold the values of diversity and inclusion (D&I) in our products and services, then our consumers would be able to naturally participate in consuming and spreading these values,” she explained.

“At KIMUSTUDIO, all members complement each other and are placed in roles that utilize their talents and strengths,” said Yeonji Chee from the Corporate Sustainability Center when explaining how the cooperation with KIMUSTUDIO began. “KIMUSTUDIO does not provide one-sided help, but instead encourages everyone to accept the way they are and unleash their talent. Creating artwork in this way coincided with our vision to create a sustainable future through collaboration and mutual growth with various employees, partners and stakeholders.”

▲ Yeonji Chee (left) and Bora Kim (right) from Samsung’s Corporate Sustainability Center planned the art platform project with KIMUSTUDIO.

“When it comes to this collaboration, we can’t help but mention the quality of the artwork of KIMUSTUDIO,” Chee said. “First of all, we were mesmerized by the distinct works of art that are unique to KIMUSTUDIO. Not only did I personally like the bright colors and charming style of the artworks, but the quality of them was also outstanding and suitable to be presented to our consumers through Samsung’s art platforms,” Chee added.

“The artworks of KIMU break stereotypes that have previously created prejudice in art. They instead help us to provide new perspectives on the differences between people,” Kim said. “We wanted to share KIMU’s artworks, which integrate art and the values of D&I seamlessly, with consumers through Samsung’s products and services,” she said.

When consumers purchase the Special Designers’ artworks on Samsung’s art platforms, a portion of the proceeds are immediately shared with KIMU. In this way, consumers can participate both in promoting the values of D&I in their daily lives while appreciating the beautiful artworks of KIMU.

Sharing the Value of Diversity With the Broader World

KIMU’s artworks are created through a collaboration of many individuals. The Special Designers and other team members work together by utilizing their own unique, artistic talents, including sketching, coloring, design and more. A total of 16 KIMU designers worked together for Samsung’s Drawing Diversity Project.

▲KIMUSTUDIO’s Special Designers work with other team members to create works of art.

However, displaying artwork through art platforms is different than displaying artwork in galleries, which was the platform KIMU was most familiar with. The role of the electronic devices that display the artwork and the characteristics of those products, such as where they are usually placed, had to be considered as well. Additionally, the project participants needed to consider how TVs, smartphones and refrigerators are utilized throughout viewers’ daily lives.

“We organized the different styles of artworks considering the unique features of Samsung’s art platforms, which allow artworks to be easily accessible in people’s daily lives,” said CEO of KIMUSTUDIO, Jang-won Nam. “How we create art has been diversified from our existing artworks and we’ve created new patterns, sceneries and artistic objects based on projects that we were working on. As a result, we’ve created artworks that are more artistic and present a new aura.”

The artworks that are usually square-shaped were adjusted according to the specific device sizes, and diverse, new patterns, designs and themes were created as well. Additionally, artwork displayed on refrigerators usually contains nature and animals, giving the impression that the kitchen and external space are connected and creating a more spacious vibe within the home.

“For Bespoke Atelier and the Art Store, we thought of artworks that would go well with the design elements, such as colors and forms that are unique to home appliances,” Hur said. “For Galaxy Themes, which users interact with on a daily basis on their smartphones, we focused on creating trendy colors or styles that suit users’ preferences.”

▲ Designers ByungHun Song (left) and Taegyu Lee (right) are Special Designers from KIMUSTUDIO who participated in Samsung’s art platform project.

Although the platform for displaying artwork has changed, the project made an effort to maintain KIMU’s unique vibe. Special Designers Taegyu Lee and ByungHun Song participated in the project and elaborated on the process of creating artwork. “We tried to draw something we like in a unique way and that process was enjoyable,” the designers said.

▲ KIMUSTUDIO’s CEO Jang-won Nam (left) and Bridge Team Manager Ran Hur (right)

“The part that makes me the happiest is that the platform for KIMU’s contents has expanded thanks to the collaboration with Samsung, a company that has consumers all over the world,” said Ran Hur, Manager of KIMU’s Bridge Team, who is in charge of hiring Special Designers for partnerships. “We hope KIMU’s artworks will be a positive influence and help KIMU move closer to its goal of breaking down barriers through content.”

Samsung’s Art Platforms Shed Light on the Value of D&I in Different Places

Three business divisions at Samsung participated in this collaborative project, making this collaboration a new challenge for KIMU.

“The direction and value sought by each platform were clear, so coming up with an optimal way to develop them was an enjoyable and valuable experience.” CEO Nam said.

The managers of each business division in charge of exhibiting KIMU’s artworks also explained their perspective on the project.

How Working Together To Create Content Breaks Down Barriers in the World

“KIMU, where the Special Designers and other team members all play an essential role in creating content, shows what D&I is all about,” Bora Kim said.

“With this project, I hope we can also consider the values of D&I and sustainability when planning other services,” said Chee. “I also hope we can continue to expand the diversity of the creators who provide content for Samsung’s various services, as well as its art platforms.”

The values of D&I are present in all of KIMU’s artworks. “This project with Samsung has been special and valuable to each of us,” CEO Nam said. “I’m overwhelmed with joy to have this opportunity to showcase the talents of our designers through their artwork, allowing the values of D&I to be communicated and recognized throughout the world. I hope the distinct aura and stories of KIMU will resonate well with the viewers through the art platforms.”

SmartThings, the center of Samsung Electronics’ smart home ecosystem, is a simple and easy to use way to connect your smart devices and make them work together seamlessly. Not only can you link your family of Samsung and other SmartThings-supported devices using a hub and the SmartThings app, there is a multitude of ways for you to connect both directly as well as through the cloud using your Galaxy smartphone, Samsung Smart TV and even your Family Hub refrigerator.

Samsung is always working to find ways to make your smart home even more personalized, automated and fine-tuned to the way you live your life. Our Internet of Things (IoT) vision for SmartThings is to create an open, intelligent and global platform that can improve the way users manage their lives, and so we are constantly working to expand on SmartThings’ tools and capabilities so that we, together with a global community of developers, can expand the capabilities of IoT for your smart home – and beyond.

In order to improve your SmartThings experience, at SDC 2018 we introduced Works With SmartThings (WWST) to deliver a better connected living experience across more devices. At this year’s SDC, we are introducing the new Rules API to bring the full power of SmartThings to developers, making the process of device automation that much easier for users to enjoy the most seamless smart home experience yet.

Making Your Smart Home Work for You

Setting up your smart home with SmartThings and enjoying all the conveniences Samsung and partner devices have to offer is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Simply create a SmartThings profile after downloading the app, let the app automatically connect all your supported devices, and configure custom automation for your daily routines.

The portfolio of devices that can help you control your smart home is ever growing. Thanks to Works As a SmartThings Hub (WASH) program, which lets you transform your existing hub device into a SmartThings Hub, and WWST, which lets you integrate a growing number of devices into your Samsung SmartThings ecosystem, your smart home can do more for you than ever before. Today, SmartThings brings together more than 5,000 different smart home products, including those from over 100 different partners for over 45 million monthly active users.

We also understand that, when managing your household, security is always key, which is why we have introduced a new range of smart home products and services, such as the SmartThings Cam, SmartThings Vision, SmartThings Video, and SmartThings Home Monitor to provide real-time data and monitoring straight to your SmartThings app for 24/7 control.

SmartThings Automation

Samsung is constantly working to bring more power to SmartThings users’ fingertips through collaboration with partners and developers. At last year’s SDC, we introduced a new suite of tools for the redesigned SmartThings Developer Workplace, and this year, we are bringing even more SmartThings tools to developers, such as the Rules API. With Rules API, developers are able to create and manage complex automations within the SmartThings Cloud, meaning that the number of services and products available to users with automation built into their capabilities is set to expand.

Automation with SmartThings not only allows you to control individual devices, but also to create a variety of personalized smart home sequences that will automate complicated processes for you.

Sports fans across the world are warming up and getting ready to watch nations compete for glory. For those staying at home to watch their team, ensuring they catch all the action on the screen requires careful planning and preparation. Thankfully, just as every squad member plays a vital role in bringing home the title, Samsung’s team of devices complement each other, each bringing something different to the viewing experience.

Gather Together

As the buildup to the match begins, gradually more and more people begin to congregate around a screen. Yet those playing host might still be in the kitchen preparing snacks and drinks for their guests right up until kick-off. There is no need for anyone to miss a moment, as the seamless links between Samsung’s IoT devices mean that everyone stays connected.

Before the game begins, hosts can search for recipes to serve their guests by utilizing the Family Hub refrigerator’s function, which aids food preparation by suggesting dishes based on the contents of your fridge and users’ preference*.

To heighten connectivity, people can share their reactions by uploading images from their Galaxy smartphones to view on their Family Hub refrigerator or Samsung Smart TV using the Gallery app. What is more, the connected touchscreen on the door of the Family Hub smart refrigerator can mirror the screen of a Samsung Smart TV or smartphone using the Smart View app, so that even in the kitchen, people can see and hear when the game begins.

Kick Back and Relax

When it comes to watching a big match amongst family and friends, the bigger the TV, the better. As everyone gathers round to watch the game unfold, a larger screen ensures everyone can see the game. Samsung 2018 QLED TV range in size from 55-inch to 82-inch models, offering the large-screen viewing experience. In addition, the match can be enjoyed from almost any angle with advanced Anti-reflection technology.

The stunningly sharp picture quality of Samsung’s 2018 QLED TVs is engineered to make the beautiful game look even more beautiful. The 4K Q Engine feature harnesses AI to analyze and optimize content, ensuring that the movement of the grass during play is clearly defined and without blur, providing a more vivid experience. Viewers can take in every pass and tackle with accurate color and contrast thanks to 100% Color Volume expression and Direct Fully Array Elite technology, which adjusts the brightness of each finely arrayed dot.

In the stadium, both sights and sounds blend to create the atmosphere of the game. For viewers at home, true immersion is achieved when they hear the sound of a player kicking the ball into the net and the crowd roaring with delight. On Samsung 2018 QLED TVs, sound is optimized for a wide variety of content, so that sports fans can hear the action on the field and the voices of commentators with crystal clarity.

During a major sporting competition or tournament, several events can take place at the same time, so finding exactly what you want to watch can be time-consuming. Samsung’s 2018 QLED TVs are equipped with a Universal Guide, which shows a selection of content updated in real time. Based on users’ preferences and the latest local trends, the Universal Guide recommends content, compiling TV broadcasts and streaming content, viewers to easily locate their favorite games. Viewers can also use the TVs’ intelligent assistant, Bixby*, to search for sport content via voice command.

Go Mobile

With competing nations in multiple time zones, it’s likely that many viewers will need to catch a game or two on the go. Busy people who still want to get the most out of their experiences can keep on top of their scheduled viewing with the Galaxy S9 and S9+.

The Super AMOLED screens and Infinity Displays of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ maximize definition and space allowing viewers to see more. The HDR-capable display provides impeccable accuracy and Adaptive Contrast Enhancement achieves clear definition, even in direct sunlight. With an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, viewers are further captivated by the ever-so-slim top and bottom bezels so that the overall experience is like holding the green field in your hands.

Fans will be pulled even further into the game by the stereo speaker sound system of the Galaxy S9 and S9+, tuned to meet the high standards set by AKG. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also integrate Dolby Atmos® 360-degree surround sound technology, which benefits all content through enhancements to sound quality and consistent playback volume, bringing entertainment to life through both regular stereo headphones and the device’s built-in speakers.

For the true multitasker, Multi-Window** allows users to simultaneously manage two windows on their screen, meaning on-the-move sports fans can keep an eye on the game in one window and use another app in the other window. For even greater flexibility, users can enable Landscape Mode and view the two windows side by side horizontally.

No matter how or where people watch an event, their viewing experience will be crystal clear and fully immersive, as Samsung’s IoT devices, TVs, and smartphones work together to create the dream team for this summer’s sporting events.

*Availability may vary by region.

**The Multi-Window feature may or may not be supported depending on the apps.

Last year, more than 7 out of 10 TVs sold by Samsung Electronics in the global TV market were ‘smart TVs.’ According to market researcher IHS Markit, the smart TV sales in the global market has exceeded 60 percent, which is a significant leap from 35 percent in 2013, demonstrating the growing demand for easy and convenient smart functions.

Samsung Electronics is leading the change by strengthening the intelligent function of its 2018 QLED TVs with artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). This year’s QLED TVs have dramatically simplified the consumer process for utilizing their TV, from the first set-up to connection with other devices. What’s more, the TVs are now able to share content with, and control, connected devices. These are the result of Samsung’s efforts to innovate the user experience based on the company’s understanding of consumer usage and by incorporating the intelligent assistant Bixby and the SmartThings IoT platform.

Effortless Set-up

The first step, of course, is to get the system set up – by taking just a few simple steps. When setting up for the first time, the TV will automatically connect to a user’s Samsung smartphone, or any mobile device with the SmartThings app installed, and take the user to the set-up step. The network information on the user’s smartphone will be shared, instantly connecting the TV to the Wi-Fi network it is connected to. If the user’s mobile is already linked to a Samsung Account, that information will also be shared with the TV.

Users can also select their apps of choice from their smartphones to enjoy them on Smart TV, and their favorites can also be added to the launcher for easy access. Once set up is complete, users won’t have to worry about it again. Unlike in the past where users had to sign in to each app on the TV, the Effortless Login feature will share and store the login information from a users’ mobile in the 2nd half of this year. The QLED TV allows users to instantly access their favorite social networking or music streaming apps.

IoT Devices Connected by a Single App

According to a survey by business solution provider CSG, 9 out of 10 consumers already own IoT devices, and half of consumers expect IoT to make tasks easier around the home. But, the process of connecting the TV to the peripherals tends to be a hassle for many. The 2018 QLED TV has tackled such challenges once and for all with ‘SmartThings,’ an integrated IoT platform that’s available now.

Users can run the SmartThings app on their smartphone and click ‘Add Device’ to automatically find all the IoT devices in the house that users can connect to. When turned on, SmartThings detects IoT devices at home ranging from traditional home appliances like washing machines and air conditioners to baby-cam, lights, doorbell, and locks. Device information in these connected homes can be viewed at a glance on the TV using the SmartThings Dashboard. The TV immediately becomes the control tower of the living room. Users can, for example, operate the air conditioner after checking the home temperature. Or check the remaining laundry time on the washing machine. Users can also choose to charge or run the PowerBot robot cleaner, and take a look at what ingredients are in the Family Hub refrigerator.

New Family Messenger in the Living Room

TV has made it easier than ever to review the pictures and videos taken on a smartphone through the Gallery app. Photos and video clips can be uploaded on Samsung Cloud which is connected to the user’s Samsung account, ready to be viewed on a big screen. When you take a picture on your mobile while you are traveling, you can immediately share your memories with your family as soon as a notification is uploaded to the TV. The Gallery app enables users to share the same content on the family hub.

The QLED TV will play the role of a special mediator in the living room to help family members communicate easily on a deeper level.

No More Multiple Remote Controls. Just Speak to Bixby.

The QLED TV has been equipped with ‘One Remote Control’ function which can control various peripherals with one remote control. In particular, this year, it supports not only game consoles, OTT (Over the Top) boxes and speakers, but also audio products connected with optical cables.

Bixby Voice also helps make navigating the QLED TV easier. By pressing and holding the remote control voice recognition button, it is possible to search content as well as set up a TV without having to operate it several times. It is a strength that users can find various VOD (Video on Demand) contents such as Amazon, Hulu, and HBO as well as the contents of the set-top box. Users can also get additional information like the soundtrack while watching TV. For example, say “What is this song” to find out what music is playing in the background.

Also, devices connected on SmartThings are voice-controlled. With Bixby, users can have a home IoT experience where everything flows smoothly.

“This year’s smart features of QLED TV have made it easier for users to enjoy the TV experience more conveniently.” said Heeman Lee, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business. “We will realize home IoT that changes the lifestyle by various connected devices communicating organically.”

The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) is exciting and vast, with researchers just starting to understand all the potential applications. However, one solution which users can tap into now, to experience how AI can make their lives more convenient and easier, is Samsung Electronics’ HomeCare Wizard. The unique AI-based service solution, available on Samsung’s 2018 smart home appliances, essentially enables devices to diagnose themselves for not only system errors, but to enhance efficiency and to help users use their appliances better.

To provide an example of how HomeCare Wizard works, just imagine if a refrigerator starts to provide less cooling than usual. HomeCare Wizard will immediately detect and provide an alert that something is off, as well as diagnose the cause of the problem without requiring the visit of a technician. Through analysis of usage patterns, HomeCare Wizard will also help users better maintain and utilize their appliances, like reminding them when it’s time to clean the washing machine tub or providing tips to ensure the best energy efficiency.

Let’s take a closer look at HomeCare Wizard and the intelligent benefits it is set to provide.

What is it?

HomeCare Wizard made its debut with the recent launch of Samsung’s QuickDrive washing machines, and utilizes AI learning to offer users benefits that go above and beyond the scope of similar diagnostic services. Whereas similar services’ diagnoses are typically limited to cut-and-dry system errors, HomeCare Wizard’s advanced algorithm also alerts users of less obvious factors that may be affecting their device’s efficiency, in particular non-system related errors. For instance, if the air conditioner’s breeze isn’t quite cool enough due to something like a contaminated filter, which a user can easily clean on his or her own, HomeCare Wizard can quickly diagnose such issues.

Therein lies another of the solution’s key benefits. If HomeCare Wizard determines that a particular issue does not require a service professional to be dispatched to a user’s home, it will provide simple instructions to help users solve the problem by themselves. This reduces the need for users to schedule such visits, and helps them find the solutions they need faster.

Identifying and explaining an issue’s exact source can also be difficult at times and in such cases a user will need to call a Samsung service center to get to the bottom of the problem. As HomeCare Wizard sends the device’s diagnostic data directly to the service center, the service center will be fully aware of the nature of the problem before the call is even made.

Why is it So Compelling?

More often than not, when appliances don’t behave the way users are supposed to and it is difficult to figure out why, the result is hours spent scouring the web or contacting a service center for answers. In other instances, users are forced to wait for a technician to visit their home. The promise of HomeCare Wizard, through AI, is the potential to change this paradigm as smart devices and appliances essentially diagnose, and even give solutions, themselves.

HomeCare Wizard’s technology also has the added benefit of making it easy for users to monitor energy use and usage patterns, and utilize their devices more efficiently. Users have the option to receive regular usage reports through the mobile app, which in addition to offering 24-hour troubleshooting and diagnostics, will provide customized tips based on users’ usage patterns to help them get more out of a particular appliance. This means that, for example, a washing machine with HomeCare Wizard can determine which laundry cycles are used most frequently, notify users of how often they’re doing laundry, and present them with the option to save their top three most frequently used cycles as ‘favorites’.

How Does it Work?

To provide such deep-level analysis, HomeCare Wizard compares a device’s previous operation alongside its current status in order to diagnose recurring problems. Through the constant study and improvement of algorithms by Samsung’s Digital Appliance development team, HomeCare Wizard has been developed to analyze and study changes in sensor data at the industry’s most comprehensive levels, while the appliances are running. The more often users use their devices, the more precisely HomeCare Wizard can suggest solutions.

Where Can I Experience it?

HomeCare Wizard will be available on a wide range of products in Samsung’s 2018 smart appliance lineup, including the company’s latest washing machines, Family Hub refrigerators, air conditioners, cooking appliances, and robot vacuum cleaners.

The latest edition of the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator allows families to take control of their kitchen, with tools that not only streamline cooking but also facilitates food management, enables communication and even provides multiple options for entertainment. As an example, with the many Online Shopping Apps, Family Hub owners can order food to be delivered directly to their home, straight from the appliance’s large touch-screen display.

To create the best user experience possible, Samsung partnered with the top online grocery shopping services across Europe, including EATALY, the world’s leading provider of premium Italian foods.

At IFA 2016, Andrea Casalini, CEO of EATALY.net; provided his insights on the value he hopes the collaboration with Samsung will bring to users.

Q. What’s the concept of EATALY and how to do you strive to deliver that concept?

EATALY is a very interesting concept that goes back to the traditional and cultural roots of Italian food and wine. We aim to not only to deliver a product, but to combine a little bit of everything into a single location where people can learn and understand the traditions and history of Italian food, all the while having a good time with loved ones.

At EATALY, you can taste excellent cuisine, sample good wine sourced from artisanal producers or take a cooking class. Our objective is to deliver this consistently all over the world.

Q. EATALY currently delivers to over 25 countries around the globe, and is continuously growing. What do you think has made the company so successful?

Personally, I think it’s our authenticity. With EATALY, people can have a real Italian experience. But it isn’t just about Italian products. It’s more about the culture of cuisine and the passion for food. People seem to be really happy to experience this in our stores all around the world.

Another reason behind the success of the company is the products that we offer. The items that we sell at EATALY can’t easily be found at other stores. So it’s very special in that sense.

Q. Now people can purchase products from EATALY directly from the Family Hub refrigerator. What made you want to partner with Samsung on this device?

Technology is changing how we live, including how we shop for groceries. EATALY recognizes this, and, as a result, has been working to build our e-commerce platform for the past few years. We are always looking for new ways to make the experience more convenient and seamless for our customers.

I truly believe that the refrigerator is the core of the family at home. The Family Hub refrigerator, which allows people to purchase groceries right from their kitchen, is a perfect example of this. So, collaborating with Samsung to give users more convenient access to EATALY products was a no-brainer for us.

Q. As someone well acquainted with high quality food, what Family Hub features do you find most useful?

In my home, it’s all about delivering the best quality food. If you want to serve really good food, then it has to be sourced properly and maintained in the very best way. I personally like the Family Hub’s Chef Zone, which is ideal for managing temperature-sensitive proteins. The refrigerator’s three inner-view cameras also help to ensure that ingredients are fresh, another important factor of high quality food.

Q. The Family Hub refrigerator is one that aims to better connect families. In your opinion, what is it about food that brings people—especially families—together?

First of all, food is something that is a natural and necessary part of life. It all goes back to our primary needs. But, it also has the ability to create a memorable experience. Nowadays, especially, our lives are incredibly hectic. So, the moment that family comes together to enjoy a meal and connect with one another is really special. This isn’t just an Italian tradition, it rings true in all parts of the world.

Just as its name implies, Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator was designed to serve as a communal center for the home. Its large touchscreen display and intuitive suite of apps were crafted to streamline not only food management, but also family communication and kitchen entertainment.

In conjunction with Family Hub’s introduction to the European market, Samsung’s Vice President of Refrigerator Product Marketing, Ik-su Choi, explains how the company’s latest refrigerators have been optimized for European families’ use.

Q. This year, Samsung created a Family Hub refrigerator with a design that reflects a more European style. What have Europeans’ pre-launch reactions to Family Hub been like?

There has been great interest in seeing the launch of a BMF (bottom-mount freezer) model for the European market. We’ve received a lot of questions regarding their introduction there since they were first released in the US and Korea, but because we needed time to cultivate suitable partner companies and properly localize the product for each country, we decided to launch Family Hub at IFA.

In terms of content, Family Hub’s food management and smart home functions were very popular. There were also a lot of questions regarding the mobile sync function.

Q. Family Hub is clearly designed for family use. Nevertheless, there are some cultural differences in terms of family life between Korea and Europe. Do you think European consumers may utilize Family Hub differently in their daily lives?

Family Hub is equipped with content that is communicable worldwide, as one thing that is universal and unchanging is the value of family.

As a center of family interaction, Family Hub can be a platform that allows families to communicate better and more conveniently, through digital handwritten notes as well as apps like Sticki. If Family Hub plays this small role in helping people have conversations, I believe that is a meaningful start.

Q. You are an expert in the field of home appliances and are well-versed in the history of refrigerators. What do you think their future will be?

Previously, capacity and storage efficiency were the main competitive factors with regard to refrigerators. Our company has historically excelled in these aspects, regularly achieving a number-one market ranking through extreme innovation.

Under the new paradigm—centered on IoT—consumers’ needs for new categories of products like the Family Hub refrigerator will grow. Refrigerators will no longer remain merely storage devices for food, but will become devices that families use together. They will become a central kitchen appliance, allowing people to communicate, and not only store food, but even purchase and manage it.

Consumers’ need for not just simple refrigerators but smart refrigerators will continue to increase, and we will respond to this trend by further evolving Family Hub in ways that are customized to various markets—utilizing their environments—and continuing to expand our lineup.

Q. Design has traditionally been the key factor driving consumers’ BMF refrigerator purchases. How did the European Family Hub’s design come about, and how are the refrigerators built to remain durable, reliable and innovative for years to come?

The BMF-style refrigerator—refrigerator above, freezer below—is the most common design in Europe. That is why we released this style of refrigerator, fit for the European market and enhanced with Family Hub’s premium functions and usability. To build it, we loaded a large interactive LCD screen onto a previous BMF framework, resulting in a Chef Collection design of peerless technology that fits beautifully in the kitchen.

In terms of reliability, Family Hub’s hardware and software have been designed to be continuously upgraded, and in the case of the LCD screen, a product that guarantees 10 years of durability was used. By attaching it using a modular method, in which replacement and repairs are easy, we allow continuous technological upgrades, as well as changes to reflect trends.

Q. What are some of the apps and inner features that will help consumers bring their cooking skills up to par with, say, the Michelin-starred chefs of Samsung’s Club des Chefs?

We are planning to load Family Hub with apps like Allrecipes, Whisk, ChefKoch—a local recipe app—and the Club des Chefs app, which all offer delicious recipes. We are also planning to provide insight into different ways to cook using Family Hub.

Q. Which Family Hub app do you believe is a game changer?

Family Hub’s applications constantly evolve. It is composed of apps that consumers need based on the four pillars that fit consumer trends, and it will constantly be updated to reflect those needs. Thus, Family Hub itself will surely play the game-changer role that changes the market’s dynamics.

Q. Family Hub is further proof that Samsung is setting a standard in IoT. Why do you believe Samsung has managed to achieve such success in this relatively new field, and how is that experience reflected in the Family Hub refrigerator?

In this IoT era, consumers have grown used to conveniently connecting with devices, based on their smartphone experience, and they want to connect with even more devices in ways that further benefit them in daily life.

Samsung applied technical expertise gained from smartphone and Smart TV experience, along with advanced abundant-usage scenarios based on our accumulated knowhow of household appliances, to create Family Hub and deliver seamless usability to consumers. Drawing from such expertise, we will be able to deliver differentiated user experiences that could not be provided in the past, and bring about big change in consumers’ lifestyles through Family Hub.

Q. The Family Hub refrigerator offers incredible insight into the freshness of our food. What are some of the ways it allows us to store goods efficiently while saving energy?

Family Hub features a large LCD screen that is efficiently managed with an adjoining sensor. By using the inner-view camera, which allows users to see the inside of the refrigerator without opening the door, users can prevent unnecessary energy consumption. This is one of the reasons why Family Hub has a high-energy consumption efficiency rating of A++.

Family Hub also helps minimize food waste by keeping track of the location of fresh foods and their expiration dates and allowing users to prevent unnecessary purchases by giving them the ability to look inside their refrigerator via mobile device anytime, anywhere.

Featuring a large touchscreen display and a comprehensive suite of intuitive apps, Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator brings the timeless art of cooking well and truly into the twenty-first century.

The latest edition, designed for European consumers, allows more people to take control of their kitchen, with tools to streamline not only cooking but also food management, communication and even entertainment. Transforming how European families use their most important appliance, and helping them eat, and live, smarter.

More Flavors

Cooking a delicious meal doesn’t have to be a chore. Apps like Allrecipes, as well as localized apps like Whisk and CHEFKOCH.DE, offer users the blueprints to craft some of the world’s tastiest foods from the comfort of their kitchen.

Some of the world’s greatest dishes are staples of European cuisine, and some of its greatest chefs are members of Samsung’s Club des Chefs. Family Hub’s Club des Chefs app offers users unbridled access to the masters’ wealth of culinary expertise, with recipes, detailed “How to” articles and accompanying video walkthroughs. So users can watch and learn, and enjoy great food.

More Insight

Family Hub was designed to not only help families prepare delicious meals, but to also give them more insight into the freshness of their food.

With Family Hub’s three inner-view cameras, users can peek into the inside of their refrigerator without opening the door, and even when they’re not in the kitchen. That camera functionality, along with Family Hub’s dedicated smartphone app, allows users to shop smarter by staying on top of their refrigerator’s contents when they’re at the store. Providing the intel to help them stop forgetting the milk once and for all.

More Communication

East to west, Austria to Zanzibar, one thing that’s truly universal is the value of family. Family Hub’s collaborative notetaking, photo and calendar functions allow it to serve as a touchpoint for families to share and keep in touch conveniently. Got an event? Add it to the family calendar. Got something to say? That’s what the Whiteboard and Sticki app are for.

More Fun

Family Hub’s suite of entertainment functions offers users the ability to add a soundtrack to their sautéing. With Tune-in, they can listen to their favorite radio station, enjoy personal playlists and access a catalog of over 10,000 music, sport and talk channels from around the world.

When it comes to football, Europe is in a league of its own. And with Family Hub’s TV mirroring function, users can quickly and easily keep an eye on the big match, or their favorite TV programs, while they cook.

Samsung Electronics today announces that the European edition of its highly acclaimed Family Hub refrigerator will be unveiled at IFA 2016 in Berlin. The new 2-door refrigerator places the fridge on top and the freezer at the bottom, a configuration preferred by European consumers.

Like the original Family Hub, the European Edition features Samsung’s exclusive Twin Cooling PlusTM technology, which cools the fridge and freezer separately with two different evaporators and keeps the temperature and humidity at optimal levels for foods. Family Hub also boasts Precise Chef CoolingTM, which holds temperatures to smaller fluctuations of just ±0.5 degrees. Together, Twin Cooling PlusTM and Precise Chef CoolingTM help users maximize food freshness at constant, optimal temperatures without mixing odours between the fridge and freezer.

Three inner-view cameras take photos of refrigerator contents each time the doors close. Users can easily see what they have at any time and from anywhere with their smartphone. Family Hub owners can also keep track of expiration dates by entering the number of days their food has left. The number automatically counts down, details that can be checked on the touchscreen without even opening the door through the Food Reminder app.

Consumers can also conveniently shop for groceries from the comfort of their kitchen counter via Online Shopping. Samsung has partnered with various online grocery shopping services from all regions such as Eataly, Supermercato24, and coop@home in Europe. Owners of the Family Hub will also be able to access exclusive recipes created by members of Samsung’s Club des Chefs, as well as thousands of recipes from global partners such as allrecipes, the most downloaded recipe app in the world, Whisk and CHEFKOCH.DE.

Attached to the European Family Hub’s fridge door is a 21.5-inch touchscreen that can function as the family’s interactive White Board. Through the Samsung Smart Home app, family members can share photos and memos in real time from wherever they are. Users can also synchronize their smartphone calendars and share each other’s schedules with their family through the Sticki app.

With the kitchen serving as the center of the home and a common gathering spot, the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator is perfectly suited to entertain friends and family. It offers options for TV Mirroring and music streaming to play through its built-in speaker.

The Family Hub is at the core of Samsung’s efforts to redefine kitchen experiences. In addition to its role in food preparation and storage, the Family Hub also acts as a hub for family communications, entertainment, and smart home services. With these functions, Family Hub transforms the kitchen into an ideal space for family time.

“We designed the BMF Family Hub with the needs of European families and contemporary households in mind,” said Suh Byung-Sam, Head of Samsung’s Digital Appliances business. “By introducing unbeatable technologies and connected features that truly fit European lifestyles in the refrigerator market here in Europe, we plan to continue our number one position.”

Samsung Electronics’ booth will be open at Level 2 of City Cube Berlin from September 2 through 7 for IFA 2016.

Samsung Electronics unveiled new Family TV feature that supports China’s one of the most popular messenger service QQ at Samsung China Forum held on March 2 in Shanghai. The new TV model gives full access to QQ messenger, allowing users to chat and share photos and videos with their family members and friends.

In addition, Samsung introduced another Family TV feature to help people with visual and hearing impairments better enjoy watching TV. The new function allows users to adjust the picture and audio quality and enlarge the font size, to modify the TV to suit their preferences and make it more accessible.

Samsung showcased the various SUHD TV sets of 2016, from 49-inch models to super-large 98-inch ones. These products offer the best-possible viewing experience, powered by such special features as high dynamic range (HDR) technology, which supports 1,000 nit brightness, and next generation Quantum dot display, which is able to express natural colors as they are.

The company had many home appliances to display, too, including the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, with a built-in 21.5-inch Full HD touch screen display and Internet of Things (IoT) Hub technology, as well as AddWash, Samsung’s new washing machine that allows consumers to add more laundry and detergent at any point during the wash cycle. Significantly, this innovative washing machine has expanded its product line to include small and medium capacity models (9kg and 12kg), joining the larger capacity model of 21kg, allowing more choices for local consumers.

In addition, Samsung clearly expressed its commitment to step up its effort to increase its presence in the B2B market by having very competitive products on display. That includes every product line in its commercial displays, including the UHF-E series with the world’s thinnest video wall, with only 1.4mm bezel-to-bezel spacing, as well as the MX7 series multi-function printers (MFPs), powered by Samsung’s Smart UX Center, which is based on the Android operating system.

Setting a New Standard for Viewing and Audio Experience

Samsung unveiled its spectacular new line-up of SUHD TVs that feature unparalleled picture quality with Quantum dot display. The world’s first bezel-less curved design, which is beautiful from every angle, also provides the smartest user experience that makes it easy for consumers to access all their entertainment content in one place. Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs feature the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, offering the most true-to-life picture quality, with stunning brightness, exceptional contrast and the most lifelike colours ever offered by Samsung.

This new range provides a premium, high dynamic range (HDR) experience, with 1,000 nit HDR minimum for a higher level contrast between light and dark images. New Ultra Black technology also significantly reduces light reflection, further enhancing picture quality with minimal glare.

Built on the Tizen operating system (OS), Samsung’s 2016 Smart TVs make it easier for consumers to discover and access all their favorite content and services, from TV and movies to games and program information, all in one place on the new Smart Hub. The need to juggle multiple remote controls is also eliminated. The Samsung Smart TV will automatically recognize the type of set-top box, game console, OTT box or home cinema system to which it is connected.

Showcasing the full SUHD range from the 7000 series models to the premium 9000 series, Samsung will bring a wide selection of SUHD TV models to Europe in spring 2016.

The company also revealed the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the HDR-compatible UBD-K8500, which offers four times the resolution and 64 times higher colour expression than conventional Blu-ray players. The UBD-K8500’s built-in upscaling technology enhances the picture quality from standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and consumers can also play CDs. The Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray player will be available from March across Europe and each device will be sold with a copy of Fox Home Entertainment, The Martian, Starring Matt Damon in Ultra HD.

Samsung also unveiled the latest additions to its audio product lineup, including the HW-K950 Soundbar, the company’s first to feature Dolby Atmos®, and the industry’s first soundbar package to include two Dolby Atmos®-enabled wireless rear speakers. The complete HW-K950 package delivers incredible 5.1.4-channel sound.

At the event Samsung showcased its newest curved monitors and demonstrated the productivity benefits of its professional-geared displays. With the release of its CF591 and CF390 monitors, Samsung continues to elevate its pioneering curved display design to offer even greater visibility and user comfort. These 1800R curvature monitors match the natural shape of the human eye, providing a more natural viewing experience.

Intelligent Next Generation of Digital Appliances That Transform the Home

Samsung’s market leadership in digital appliances is also evident with its launch of smart and practical innovations that could make a big difference to household chores.

The new AddWash Front-load Washing Machine has a distinctive access door that makes it convenient to add any item, such as a piece of forgotten laundry, without having to drain the washer in order to open the main washer door mid-cycle. It also allows users to add hand-washed items for rinsing, or additional softener anytime during the cycle.

It also comes with an array of smart functions, which work with both Android and iOS smartphones. That not only makes it easy to monitor the progress of the laundry program, but also offers the option to alert users on their smartphone just before the start of a new washing cycle, for example if they want to add a few delicate or hand-wash items towards the end of the wash cycle.

An embodiment of Samsung’s innovation in delivering super time savings and washing performance, the AddWash Washing Machine comes with a SuperSpeed feature that makes it possible to complete a normal wash in less than an hour without compromising washing performance. Samsung AddWash will be available across Europe from this month.

Samsung used its European Forum to announce that French-English two-star Michelin chef, Michel Roux Jr. is to become the eighth member of its esteemed Club des Chefs. Michel Roux Jr., of Le Gavroche and Roux, is also known in the UK as a popular TV personality, appearing as a judge and presenter on the BBC’s popular primetime programme, Masterchef.

Samsung also announced the expansion of its robot vacuum lineup with POWERbot Turbo Wi-Fi. Now with 70 times more powerful suction than leading robot vacuum brands*, its Cyclone Force system uses strong centrifugal forces to pick up and separate dirt into the outer chamber to reduce filter chopping and keep optimal suction power.

Equipped with Smart Control Wi-Fi connectivity, the vacuum enables consumers to control the movement of the vacuum remotely using their smartphone. The “Select & Go” feature creates a virtual map of the entire home on your smartphone app, with each room that can be named individually. It then lets you pick specific areas or rooms in the home that may need cleaning. Simply select a room and the vacuum will make its way over there. With an enhanced digital mapping system that can literally “see” its way around your home, Samsung’s new robot vacuum delivers the ultimate clean, all without lifting a finger.

A major new attraction at the European Forum 2016 was the new Family Hub Refrigerator, redefining the kitchen with the ultimate smart home appliance, which helps families to connect and provides new ways to manage, shop and prepare food. Its centrepiece is a 21.5-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen, a digital command centre for the connected home, which combines powerful performance with ground-breaking technology never before seen in a refrigerator.

The Family Hub’s Key capabilities include:
