The research was carried out in partnership with Samsung Medical Center, Asia’s leading hospital with outstanding health care services and research achievements. Samsung has been working in collaboration with Samsung Medical Center for over 10 years, focusing on the impact mobile devices can have on hearing and researching new ways to optimize sound experiences for users. This latest research marks an important next step in Samsung’s ongoing commitment to collaborating on pioneering innovations that benefit people in their everyday lives.

The study assessed the efficacy of a hearing aid, a personal sound amplification product, and Galaxy Buds Pro. According to the authors, no other study has yet included true wireless earbuds when evaluating the clinical performance of hearing devices. The study is the first to demonstrate the potential benefit of true wireless earbuds for individuals with mild to moderate hearing impairments and has the potential to improve the lives of 1.5 billion people globally who are currently living with some degree of hearing loss.¹

“With rapidly aging populations it’s expected that, by 2050, one in ten people will have hearing loss1. But while hearing aids are useful for managing hearing impairments, uptake remains relatively low, mainly due to the high price,” said Il Joon Moon, Associate Professor at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Samsung Medical Center. “The initial study findings are very promising and encourage people to discover alternative devices, such as Galaxy Buds Pro, that can support them in their day to day lives.”

Galaxy Buds Pro, the hearing aid, and the personal sound amplification product underwent three key tests: electroacoustic assessment, sound amplification evaluation, and a clinical performance evaluation.

Electroacoustic Assessment

First, the electroacoustic characteristics of each device were assessed to see if they met the key performance criteria for hearing aids: output sound pressure level, frequency range, equivalent input noise, and total harmonic distortion. The results revealed that Galaxy Buds Pro met each of these four criteria, indicating that they show comparable performance to hearing aids.

Sound Amplification Evaluation

Then, a sound amplification evaluation was performed to examine if the devices adequately boosted sound. Each device was tested at seven different frequencies, and all showed an appropriate level of amplification.

Clinical Performance Evaluation

Finally, a clinical performance evaluation investigated changes in individuals’ hearing levels both with and without the devices, and their ability to recognize words and sentences. Participants had mild to moderate hearing loss, with a median age of 63 years. Statistical significance was observed at 1,000Hz, 2,000Hz and 6,000Hz, meaning Galaxy Buds Pro sufficiently amplified sound at the three frequencies of speech pitches. Furthermore, in total, over 57 percent of the participants reported that Galaxy Buds Pro were able to help them communicate in a quiet environment.

It was also discovered that, when wearing Galaxy Buds Pro, individuals were able to understand spoken words better–the results found statistically significant improvement in performance for the three devices compared to that in the unaided condition (Figure). This suggests that along with hearing aids and personal sound amplification products, Galaxy Buds Pro could potentially provide communicative benefit for individuals with hearing loss, and especially for those with mild and moderate loss.

Galaxy Buds Pro feature Ambient Sound, which can amplify nearby sounds by up to 20 decibels and, with four levels to choose from, users are able to adjust and customize how they experience sound according to their needs.

The most important feature for earphones will always be their sound quality. With dynamic vocal range, and an organic, smooth balance for natural sounding audio across genres, Galaxy Buds Pro’s biggest advantage is clean, clear sound.

These earphones really delivered on the low pitches, with drum kicks hitting clear and punchy. Their ability to deliver on the deep sounds makes them perfect for tracks with heavy bass. Sounds in the middle range were warm and rich, while the high-pitched sounds carried surprising detail and openness. Where Galaxy Buds Pro really shined was in capturing things like sharp but fine vocals and the texture of violins without missing any of their warmth.

Galaxy Buds Pro also have an excellent ability to recreate the spatiality of sound. In the case of classical music, they reenacted the sound of deep brass instruments and the voice of a choir all while capturing the feeling of hearing the music in a concert hall. At the same time, they proved able to deliver on the minute details of a performance with clarity.

Dual concentric drivers also play a major role in delivering a sense of space with Galaxy Buds Pro. The earbuds are equipped with a two-way driver consisting of 6.5mm tweeter and 11mm woofer. Samsung has developed an all-in-one two-way driver that places the tweeter at the center of the woofer, improving sound efficiency and raising sound quality to a new level. Galaxy Buds Pro prove that wireless earbuds can deliver clean and clear studio-like sound.

Active Noise Canceling: Hear the Sounds You Want, Not the Ones you Don’t

Galaxy Buds Pro are loaded with functions that help deliver an immersive sound experience, but perhaps the most notable is Active Noise Canceling.

A must-have feature for high-performance wireless earphones, Galaxy Buds Pro do Active Noise Canceling especially well by allowing users to focus on the audio they want without feeling like they’re simply having their ears plugged.

The beauty of Galaxy Buds Pro’s natural noise canceling comes through in the low-pitch range. Active Noise Canceling works to cancel out unwanted sounds by generating sound waves that have the same wavelength as the external noise but move in the opposite direction. Equipped with a conversation detecting function, they automatically turn on Ambient Sound by recognizing your voice when you start speaking. This makes it possible to communicate with people around you even when your music is playing. If Galaxy Buds Pro then detect that you haven’t spoken in a while, they’ll assume your conversation has ended and go back to Active Noise Canceling. They can even adjust external volume levels, so small sounds can be amplified to a maximum of 20 dB if necessary, much like how a hearing aid works.

There is also a noticeable improvement in call quality. Galaxy Buds Pro use three microphones to get the job done, including a high-sensitivity microphone and voice pickup unit. Following a range of ecosystem-empowering updates that came to Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ last month, several new exciting updates are set to provide users with even more enjoyable S Pen and Galaxy Buds Pro experiences.

Do More With Your S Pen

As part of a software update coming in Q1 2021,¹ you will be able to enjoy more continuous experiences with your S Pen. Text box areas conventionally serviced with keyboards – such as address boxes – will now be able to be filled in using your S Pen.² This means that anything you write in them will instantly be converted into digital text, including punctuation marks – you need to simply draw a ‘v’ between words to leave a space and draw ‘⌒’ to connect separate words.

For more natural note-taking experiences in Samsung Notes, a new pen type is also coming as part of this upcoming software update. Once selected,³ the ‘Pen to text’ option lets you jot down your handwritten notes and will instantly convert them into digital text.

Available in over 80 languages⁴ and able to detect any punctuation and spacing, the ‘Pen to text’ option removes any need for you to put down your S Pen when using Samsung Notes and provides you with more typing tool choices.

Simply Snap, Scan, and Edit With Samsung Notes

Those who use their Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ to scan documents will appreciate being able to scan documents using the Camera app on their devices. As part of the latest update, this tool just got much easier to access for those looking to scan and edit a document in Samsung Notes. Simply tap the ‘Attach’ icon in the app, scan your document, and get to work making notes directly on the scanned document.

Enjoy Multi-dimensional Sound With 360 Audio

These days we are all finding ourselves spending more time than ever before enjoying videos and other multimedia content at home on our personal devices. Introduced alongside the Galaxy Buds Pro,⁵ the 360 Audio feature lets you enjoy 360-degree surround sound when watching a video on your Galaxy Tab S7 or S7+. The intelligent motion-tracking sensor will pinpoint the direction of your media’s sound as you enjoy content on your Tab S7 or S7+. Smart Lock

Ever wished your smartphone could automatically unlock itself when you carry it around? With the Smart Lock¹ feature, which was first made available with Android 5 in 2014, you can unlock your smartphone in situations and locations you feel secure in without entering a password or scanning your fingerprint.

The feature lets you keep your Galaxy smartphone unlocked when it’s connected to your Galaxy smartwatch or when you have your phone on you. To give you more ways to quickly access the apps you need, you can also choose to automatically unlock your smartphone in a safe location of your choice – like your home.

Buds Together

Music sounds better when you listen to it with friends. First introduced with Galaxy Buds Live, Buds Together² makes it easy for you to share your favorite songs with others while enjoying the best sound quality.

To enable the feature, all you need to do is tap on the Music Share icon in your phone’s Quick Panel and select the earbuds you want to share with. Once the invitation is accepted on your friend’s device, you can listen to the same tune together on two separate pairs of Galaxy earbuds.

Auto Switch

Many of us use just one pair of earbuds with multiple devices. When you switch device, it’s often a hassle to disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth connection. Wouldn’t it be great if your earbuds can do the switch automatically when you need them to?

Introduced with Galaxy Buds Pro, the Auto Switch feature³ seamlessly takes care of your Galaxy Buds Pro’s connection when you switch between devices. Let’s say you get a call on your Galaxy smartphone while you’re watching a movie on your Galaxy tablet. Instead of having to manually disconnect your earbuds from the tablet and pair them with your phone, the feature will automatically switch the Bluetooth connection over to your phone when you pick up the call.

Hand Wash

Personal hygiene is more important now than ever, especially when it comes to hand washing. But maintaining a regular handwashing routine can be challenging as we go about our daily lives.

Shortly following the rapid changes around the world last year, Samsung introduced the Hand Wash app on Galaxy smartwatches. The app provides a practical yet simple way to help you keep up with your handwashing routine. You can get started by setting up alarms in the app and receive reminders to wash your hands at regular intervals. Now with the latest update⁴, once you start washing your hands, your Galaxy smartwatch will automatically start a 25-second countdown, which is the World Health Organization’s recommended handwashing time. On the app’s dashboard, you can also keep track of how many times you have washed your hands during the day as well as review your handwashing habits on a weekly basis.

A common adage in the field of modern design is that ‘form follows function’, meaning that the design process should start with the product’s intended functionality rather than any aesthetic stimulation. This same principle was applied to Galaxy Buds Pro by the Samsung Electronics design team, who understood that wireless earphones must first and foremost provide the best possible experience to users.

The resulting design elements of Galaxy Buds Pro are the product of extensive research into the nature of wireless earbuds, their users and usage habits. Galaxy Buds Pro’s rounded shape with minimal external resistance was designed for optimal sound quality, while their ergonomic design makes for comfortable use and the application of sustainable materials to the product encourages environmentally-friendly processes. Thanks to the efforts of the designers, Galaxy Buds Pro’s design delivers better earbud experiences by prioritizing function as well as form.

A Shape that Truly Captures Sound

In order to mitigate the prevailing issues that contribute to the degradation of sound quality for wireless earphone users, namely external noise and wind sounds, Samsung’s designers undertook research into reducing these extraneous factors and delivering clearer sound quality. The resulting solution is a curved and rounded overall form factor that streamlines the earbuds to reduce resistance and enhance sound clarity.

The form factor of Galaxy Buds Pro is totally round, with no breaks or protrusions, in order to reduce any wind noise that might occur when wind brushes against the microphone hole. Galaxy Buds Pro’s aerodynamic design, snug inner-ear fit and noise-cancelling technologies help reduce unwanted noise and provide subtle, uninterrupted audio experiences.

Furthermore, today’s wireless earphones are used not just for listening, but for speaking, too, given the convenience they offer when a call comes through and a user’s hands are busy. In order to provide optimized sound capture experiences, too, Samsung’s designers comprehensively designed the internal structure of Galaxy Buds Pro to ensure the earbuds pick up sound as effectively as they produce it. A carefully-considered distance between Galaxy Buds Pro’s two microphones and the application of beamforming technology ensure that the earbuds vividly capture the user’s voice without interference.

“We considered the structure of both Galaxy Buds Pro’s exterior and its interior in order to provide the best sound quality, cooperating closely with the engineering department in order to provide the maximum user experiences within the smallest form,” noted the design team.

Convenience, Comfort and Individuality: An Ergonomic Fit

These days, wireless earphones are becoming more and more indispensable to their users, regardless of location, activity or time of day. Accordingly, the design team devised a size and shape for Galaxy Buds Pro that is suitable for any ear and every moment.

In order to create a design capable of comfortably suiting all types of ear size and shape, designers conducted earphone comfort surveys and researched the topic extensively in order to create several prototypes and mock-ups and find the optimal earbud design. “Our goal was to provide a fit that is stable and comfortable for as many users as possible,” noted the design team. “Based on our research of individuals with all kinds of ear shapes, we were able to define our optimum standard fit.”

Not only do Galaxy Buds Pro fit in almost any ear comfortably, but they also sit naturally thanks to the absence of wingtips or any other protruding factors. In order to stay secure in the ear without any wingtips, the three common points of the ear were taken into account: the tragus (extending outward in front of the earhole), the antitragus (lying across the tragus) and the helix (the space behind the earhole). When an earbud is settled around these three points, the need for wingtips is removed; accordingly, Galaxy Buds Pro fit comfortably, ergonomically and without the need for further protruding design aspects.

Sustainable Processes Make for Sustainable Sound Experiences

The hallmarks of a well-designed product include good aesthetics, novel functionalities and value that goes beyond the product itself. Regarding the latter, Samsung’s designers ensure that all their designs include long-term perspectives that consider every aspect of the product’s lifecycle, from the planning stages through to disposal. In order to provide customers with a product that promotes causes greater than just the intended function, Galaxy Buds Pro have been designed with a sustainable product cycle as well as with sustainable materials.

As with their predecessors Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Buds Pro feature the application of post-consumer materials (PCM) to their body and case. As such materials are recycled from end-of-life plastic, the harmful effects resulting from new plastic production can be reduced through the use of PCM. Galaxy Buds Pro’s designers were also careful to ensure that these sustainable materials were in no way fragile and offered optimized durability and aesthetic quality.

“Taking into account the strength and durability of the product, Galaxy Buds Pro feature 20% PCM,” highlighted the design team. “Given that Galaxy Buds Pro is not a single-use product, we worked hard to balance product longevity with sustainability. We will continue to work hard on devising sustainable product processes that extend even past the end of a product’s lifecycle.”

¹ Galaxy Buds Pro can distinguish between noise and human voices. Switch temporarily to Ambient Sound and reduce media volume when you speak so you can hear conversations without taking out your earbuds.

² ANC on Galaxy Buds Pro received UL Verification for cutting external background noise by up to 99 percent at 118.43Hz. Features including ANC are enabled through a Bluetooth^®connection or the Galaxy Wearable app on Android, available through the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store.
