These days, when it comes to capturing precious moments, spectacular weather, or a delicious dish, a smartphone camera is an absolute necessity. It should come as no surprise that, according to a Samsung survey, an overwhelming number of consumers rank the camera and camera-related features among the top three factors that matter most when buying a new smartphone. The camera’s importance has been amplified as social media platforms have grown more popular, and as more smartphone users have begun to create their own content.

Since releasing its first camera phone, the SCH-V200, in 2000, Samsung has remained a leader in the industry by relentlessly advancing the camera phone segment. The Galaxy S series’ innovative cameras are the culmination of years of experience developing groundbreaking technologies. Follow along as we explore just how much the series’ cameras have evolved over the last 11 years – from the launch of the very first Galaxy S in 2010, all the way up to the recently introduced Galaxy S21.

The first Galaxy S device featured a VGA-class front camera that was capable of making video calls, as well as a 5-megapixel (MP) rear camera that could record HD videos. The rear camera also included built-in autofocus, facial recognition and anti-shake functions, and featured a Panorama Shot mode, which allowed users to capture an image of a scene that was much wider than what they saw on their screen.

Introduced a year after the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S2 featured a thoroughly enhanced camera. Included among the upgrades were boosts in pixel counts – 2 megapixels in the front and 8 megapixels in the rear – and an LED flash to facilitate night shots. Other fun additions included an improved autofocus feature, which made it easier to focus the camera on a desired subject, and a cartoon-inspired feature that transformed photos into hand-drawn images.

Introduced with 2012’s Galaxy S3, Burst Shot offered users the perfect tool for capturing blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments like fun jump-in-the-air shots. Both the 1.9MP front camera and the 8MP rear camera supported the mode, which allowed users to take up to 20 pictures in 3.3 seconds. The cameras also featured a Best Photo mode, which helped users select the best photo out of eight continuous shots, and a Zero Shutter Lag mode, which guaranteed that there would be no delay between the moment the user tapped the shutter button and the picture was produced.

The Galaxy S4 ushered in the era of 10-plus megapixel cameras by combining a 2MP front camera with a 13MP rear camera. The smartphone also introduced features that changed how users captured special moments, and in doing so, transformed their pictures into stories. For example, the camera’s Dual Shot mode allowed users to capture images with both cameras at the same time, producing a photo in which the photographer and the subject occupied the same frame. Other features unique to the Galaxy S4’s camera experience included Sound & Shot, which allowed users to record audio to accompany their images, and Drama Shot, which let users take multiple pictures in quick succession and combine them into an image that tells the story better than a single photo could.

The Galaxy S5 was a landmark release, as it was the first smartphone in the industry to feature a 16MP ISOCELL camera. The ISOCELL image sensor enhanced image quality with less cross-pixel interference, making it possible to take clearer pictures even in the dark. The camera also featured an upgraded HDR mode for enhancing photos. When taking pictures or recording videos, applying the HDR feature allowed users to enjoy vibrant images even in dimly lit rooms or environments with heavy backlighting.

To make it easier for smartphone users to capture more moments, Samsung introduced a Quick Launch function with the Galaxy S6 that allowed users to launch the camera in just 0.7 seconds, simply by tapping the home button twice on any screen. A function that automatically tracked and focused on moving objects enhanced image sharpness, while a 5MP F1.9 lens was installed on the front to boost selfie quality.

The Galaxy S7 incorporated a dual pixel image sensor – a technology featured in high-end DSLR cameras – to allow users to quickly snap crisp and clear photos even when they’re in the dark. The sensor worked by splitting every pixel into two photodiodes for on-chip phase detection, providing vastly improved autofocus performance. The camera also introduced a selfie flash mode, which would cause the screen to flash when taking a selfie to produce a brighter shot. Together, the Galaxy S7’s camera innovations achieved a then-record DxOMark Mobile Score of 88 points.

A perfect photo requires proper lighting and minimal movement from your subject. Unfortunately, while those may be the perfect conditions, they’re also conditions that we rarely find ourselves in when taking a shot.

To help users snap better photos, the Galaxy S8 introduced an improved image signal process algorithm that ensured clear, stable images regardless of time or place. It achieved this by taking three consecutive photos and selecting the best one. Because the device’s large, 6.2-inch1 display could prove difficult for some to manage with one hand, gesture-based controls were also introduced to help users operate the camera. For example, with the camera open, swiping left or right with your thumb would toggle filters or modes, while swiping up or down would allow you to switch between the front and rear cameras or zoom in or out.

To help ensure that users’ photos would come out well in various environments, the Galaxy S9 introduced a Dual Aperture camera that would automatically adjust to ambient light just like the human eye – widening in the dark and shrinking in bright light. The camera featured the brightest F1.5/F2.4 lens available in a smartphone at the time, which allowed it to absorb approximately 28 percent more light than the previous model, resulting in clearer pictures even in dark settings.

Samsung also enhanced the camera with functions designed to help users express themselves more effectively. The camera’s Super Slow-mo feature allowed users to record videos at 960 frames per second, making it possible to capture movements or moments that are too fast for the human eye to see. Once they finished recording, the function made it easy for users to share these epic slow-mo moments as GIFs on social media. Another notable addition was AR Emoji – a function that utilized the camera and augmented reality technology to allow users to create AR avatars that could mimic their facial expressions in real time.

By the time the Galaxy S10 was released in 2019, smartphone users were creating more content than ever before. To cater to this trend, the Galaxy S10 introduced Super Steady mode. The function greatly enhanced the quality of users’ recordings through video stabilization, making it perfect for recording smooth content when enjoying activities like cycling and dancing. The Galaxy S10’s HDR10+ support produced true-to-life colors in users’ videos, while its 16MP Ultra Wide Camera captured scenes as users saw them with a field of view that was similar to the human eye (123 degrees).

The Galaxy S20’s outstanding performance raised the bar for smartphone photography. Both the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 108MP camera, as well as the 64MP shooter equipping the Galaxy S20 and S20+, were designed to capture each and every detail in a given scene.

Perhaps the most eye-catching camera enhancement was the Space Zoom function, which paired Hybrid Optic Zoom with AI-powered digital zoom. This allowed users to zoom much further into images – up to 100x in the case of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. In addition to supporting 8K video recording, the camera also included an upgraded Super Steady mode that took camera stability a step further thanks to an anti-rolling stabilizer and AI-based motion analysis.

To offer users the ability to capture moments of their lives in more meaningful ways, Samsung equipped the Galaxy S21 series with a pro-grade camera that enhances content using on-device AI. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first Samsung smartphone to feature two telephoto lenses, and boasts five cameras in all: a 40MP (F2.2) front camera, a 12MP (F2.2) rear ultra-wide camera, a 108MP (F1.8) rear main camera, a 10MP (F4.9) rear telephoto camera, and a 10MP (F2.4) rear telephoto camera. The Galaxy S21 and S21+, meanwhile, feature a total of four cameras: a 10MP (F2.2) front camera, a 12MP (F2.2) rear ultra-wide camera, a 12MP (F1.8) rear main camera, and a 64MP (F4.9) rear telephoto camera.

The cameras of the Galaxy S21 series are packed with features designed to help you capture the moments that matter most. The combination of anti-shake technology, 10x optical zoom, and both laser and dual-pixel autofocus enables the cameras to produce results that rival those of high-end DSLRs. The new Director’s View feature, meanwhile, helps users pick the perfect lens for their photo by placing three preview screens beneath the camera’s viewfinder. The Galaxy S21 series also offers creators the ability to utilize the selfie and rear cameras simultaneously to create unforgettable video content.

Each camera additionally supports 4K video recording at 60fps (frames per second), and the dual telephoto lens setup is especially adept at capturing vivid photos from virtually any distance. Furthermore, with an upgraded 108MP lens and nona-binning technology, the Galaxy S21 series ensure bright and clear photos even in low-light environments.

Q: Why did Samsung choose to remove wired headphones and in-box chargers for Galaxy S21?

Response by Patrick Chomet

“We discovered that more and more Galaxy users are reusing accessories they already have and making sustainable choices in their daily lives to promote better recycling habits. To support our Galaxy community in this journey, we are transitioning to removal of the charger plug and earphones in our latest line of Galaxy smartphones.

We believe that the gradual removal of charger plugs and earphones from our in-box device packaging can help address sustainable consumption issues and remove any pressure that consumers may feel towards continually receiving unnecessary charger accessories with new phones.

We’ve also been implementing standardized USB-C type charging ports since 2017, so older chargers can still be compatible with our newest Galaxy models.”

Q: What was the main focus when developing the camera for the Galaxy S21 series?

Response by KJ Kim, Chief Technology Officer, EVP & Head of Mobile R&D Office, Mobile Communications Business

“At Samsung, our goal is to help everyone take pro-quality photos and videos, no matter if you are in a low or bright light environment, near or far away from the subject. When innovating the camera for the Galaxy S21 series, we focused on capturing the best, high-quality photos and videos at any time, making it easy for consumers to enjoy professional looking, cinematic results powered by improved on-device AI. There is a lot of new technology and innovation required to achieve this and it starts with our most advanced image sensor. We also built the Galaxy S21 Ultra with our most advanced pro-grade camera system. It raises the bar for professional photographers and tech enthusiasts looking for the best in mobile camera performance and future-proof innovations.”

Response by KJ Kim

Q: You’re expanded UWB capabilities to the Galaxy S21+ and S21 Ultra. What are your future plans for UWB in Galaxy products?

Response by KJ Kim

“We recently launched SmartThings Find to help you quickly and easily locate your Galaxy devices, even when offline. We took this a step further with Galaxy S21+ and S21 Ultra, which uses expanded UWB capabilities to utilize the AR finder so you can send virtual messages to other Galaxy users during your search. We’re also excited to announce our partnership with major car companies, providing the opportunity to enjoy a next-generation car experience starting this summer. We’re actively working to expand our automobile partnerships with the goal of offering this feature across a wide variety of car makes and models.”

Yesterday, Samsung livestreamed its 29th Galaxy Unpacked event and unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S21 series, along with fellow Galaxy ecosystem products Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy SmartTag.

What started in 2009 with the launch of the Samsung Jet, has now blossomed into one of the most anticipated tech events of the year. Since then, Unpacked events have generated excitement among consumers around the world, helped set the pace for the industry and cemented Samsung as a leader in mobile innovation.

Samsung has showcased its innovative spirit with new product and partnership announcements and exciting, interactive presentations. At Galaxy S7 Unpacked in February 2016, audiences were provided with their own Gear VR set to see the demonstration via an immersive viewing experience. And at Unpacked in 2019, Samsung announced that it was partnering with Microsoft on Note10 as part of its efforts to create a more seamless Galaxy ecosystem experience.

Unpacked has undergone a digital transformation to keep media and Galaxy fans informed about upcoming mobile innovations throughout the pandemic. Virtual Unpacked events since the Galaxy Note20 series in August 2020 have allowed Samsung to reach a wider global audience and experiment with stunning new visuals and stage effects.

There is a certain thrill to getting the first glimpse of next-generation mobile technology. For over a decade, Samsung has been providing that rush through its Unpacked events, where it unveils cutting-edge innovations to eager audiences of tech lovers, journalists and Galaxy fans. But Unpacked is about much more than showcasing the specs of new devices.

“Each Unpacked is a milestone in Samsung’s year,” said Stephanie Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of Marketing Team of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “As a leading pioneer of new mobile experiences, we’re always excited to unveil the groundbreaking innovations that will set the standard for what our devices can do in our mobile-first world. Unpacked is our opportunity to share our vision for the future with millions of people around the globe.”

Unpacked’s Meaningful Heritage

In the weeks leading up to Unpacked, media coverage and social platforms are always abuzz with anticipation as people speculate about what will be announced.

Unpacked is more than a press conference or flashy showcase of new technology. Each one is the culmination and meaningful celebration of the hard work of thousands of people at Samsung Mobile. It brings Samsung employees, fans, partners and key members of the tech industry together and allows us to demonstrate new experiences in relatable and engaging ways that cannot be replicated by rumors and speculation.

And while each Unpacked is unique, they are all built on the heritage of what the event means to all those involved. Planning and successfully executing each one is a massive undertaking that is many months in the making.

Samsung is well-versed in pulling off sensational moments to launch its products, but the pandemic posed a host of new and unusual challenges to the making of Galaxy Unpacked 2021. Mary Lee has led the production of Unpacked events for the last five years — since the launch of Galaxy S7 — and she shared some behind-the-scenes details on how she and her team brought the 2021 event to life, in spite of the hurdles along the way.

“Unpacked is the first time we show off everyone’s hard work, so I consider it to be a great privilege, honor and responsibility to oversee these launch events,” Lee said. “With the 2021 event, communication was key to maintaining collaboration and keeping workstreams moving forward — we had an amazing team that helped push things along.”

The January 2021 event saw the return of Unpacked’s famous giant, cube-shaped symbol. The iconic emblem has represented Unpacked since the first event in 2009 but has been noticeably absent the last few years. As a nod to the legacy of Unpacked, and to generate excitement for the show, this year Samsung brought the well-known 3-D symbol back to the stage for the unveiling of the Galaxy S21 series.

Pandemic Production Challenges

The familiar icon may have returned, but the format of this year’s event was a vast departure from the 2009 Unpacked where it first debuted. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic required the show to be virtual and made the production process complex. There were limits on the number of people allowed inside during filming and all participants had to wear latex gloves and face shields on top of their face masks. Stringent social distancing practices were also enforced, including a mandate that all meals be taken in isolation. Though these protocols presented logistical challenges, Lee credits the careful measures with ensuring everyone remained healthy throughout production.

“COVID-19 restrictions varied enormously around the world, so creating the Galaxy S21 Unpacked required a huge team effort across many countries and time zones,” she said. “Despite the challenges, we worked hard to deliver the best possible unveiling experiences for our audience. We brought the Galaxy ecosystem to life with engaging visuals and product demonstrations and we recreated the hands-on moments of a live event with hands-on videos that examined the devices in detail.”

The Upside of Going Digital

Going virtual and shooting in advance also helped transcend some of the typical limitations of a physical event. It afforded the event’s speakers, some of whom were Samsung employees stepping outside of their comfort zone when talking on stage, the benefit of multiple takes. Presenters were able to practice and work through their nerves, so they could have a more natural presence on camera.

Galaxy Unpacked 2021 debuted a slew of new products and experiences designed to make everyday life epic and, although it just wrapped, Lee and her team are already masterminding Samsung’s next event.

“We’re always looking at new and exciting ways to evolve Unpacked going forward,” she said. “Right now, we’re gathering feedback and lessons learned, so we can begin planning our next launch.”

2021 is just getting started and more exciting Samsung innovation lies ahead. Stay tuned — the next epic unveiling may be happening sooner than you think.

Since debuting in 2010, the Galaxy S series has brought users closer to the world around them, made their lives more convenient, and offered them unprecedented mobile experiences with one groundbreaking innovation after another.

Today, 11 years since its official launch, the series remains as innovative as ever. Join us as we take a trip down memory lane and revisit each and every model in the Galaxy S series’ rich history.

The first Galaxy S device was announced in 2010 under the tagline “Super Smart.” The culmination of 20 years of hard work in the mobile industry, the Galaxy S introduced three S’s, as it were: ‘super’ applicability to users’ daily lives and needs, the then-latest version of a Super AMOLED display panel, and a 9.9mm-thin ‘super’ design.

The success of the Galaxy S paved the way for the release of the Galaxy S2 in 2011, which introduced improvements in build quality. The device, which is still regarded as a masterpiece, launched with an upgraded Super AMOLED Plus display as well as the then-most powerful smartphone processor on the market, the Exynos 4 Dual (4210). While the Galaxy S2’s 4.27-inch display was larger than the Galaxy S’s 4-inch panel, the device itself was thinner than its predecessor, measuring just 8.49mm thick. The smartphone’s camera also introduced a convenient flashlight function.

The gentle curves of the Galaxy S3’s pebble-inspired design broke the stereotype that smartphones were all sharp-edged. The device featured a 4.8-inch display and a 2,100mAh-capacity removable battery, and introduced a variety of convenient functions. These include Smart Stay, which uses the front camera to sense when you are looking at your device and prevents the screen from turning off; Direct Call, which allows you to call a contact immediately when you bring your phone to your ear; and Live Video List, which offers a thumbnail view of video clips in the video player.

Announced a year later, the Galaxy S4 featured a design that resembled a Galaxy S3 with thinner bezels. It took Samsung just 6 months to sell more than 40 million units of the newer model. Weighing 130 grams and measuring 7.9mm thick, the device was thinner and lighter than the Galaxy S3. It also featured a larger display, which measured 4.99 inches and was the first to be made of scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 3. In addition to enhancing the smartphones’ hardware, Samsung introduced key software improvements in the form of convenient features such as Smart Scroll, which allows you to scroll through content by slightly tilting your device forward or backward, and Smart Pause, which allows the video player to pause playback when you look away from the screen.

The Galaxy S5 was an optimal device that did everything that a smartphone should do while maintaining the Galaxy series’ unique design identity. It was the first device in the industry to feature an ISOCELL camera, which made it more useful for recording moments from everyday life. It was also the first smartphone to feature a heart rate sensor that could be linked with other devices to monitor users’ fitness levels. On top of that, it was the very first Galaxy S model to offer IP67 water and dust resistance, which allowed users to stay connected without worrying about rain or splashes damaging their device.

Released in 2015, the Galaxy S6 marked a new chapter for the series by introducing yet another innovative design element. Its first-of-its-kind display, which was curved on both sides, fostered a unique three-dimensional effect and a more immersive viewing experience. Crafted from metal and glass, the device was both remarkably original and beautiful. The Galaxy S6 models were also the first in the series to support wireless charging and the Samsung Pay service.

The Galaxy S7 was introduced as a series that included two distinct models: the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Both featured IP68 water and dust resistance, and for users’ convenience, both included a hybrid Nano SIM and microSD card slot that supported microSD cards of up to 200GB. The devices were the first to introduce a dual pixel image sensor, which delivered crisp and clear photos even in low-light conditions. The camera also featured a Motion panorama mode, which allowed users to take pictures of wide scenes that could be viewed as moving photos.

The year 2017 was a time when the Galaxy S series underwent significant changes in terms of both design and performance.

For a start, the Galaxy S8 series was the first to feature Samsung’s edge-to-edge, bezel-less Infinity Display, which introduced a new 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The S8 models were also the first in the series to swap physical keys for on-screen buttons, which accentuate their sleek designs, in addition to being the first to feature Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby, which has proven particularly useful for managing your device when your hands are full. Moreover, the incorporation of facial recognition technology made the Galaxy S8 the only smartphone series to offer fingerprint, iris and facial recognition-based biometric authentication.

The Galaxy S8 added a fun new element to users’ daily routines by enabling them to interact with Bixby. The Galaxy S9 added to that fun by offering a unique user experience that encompassed photos, videos and emojis. The camera’s AR Emoji feature allowed users to create their own augmented reality avatars that could be used to snap selfies, while its Super Slow-mo function enabled it to track objects’ movement to record epic super slow-motion videos. Other new additions included support for SmartThings, which turns your smartphone into a handy remote control for managing connected devices, and Samsung DeX, which allows you to use your smartphone or tablet to power a PC-like experience.

The launch of the Galaxy S10 underlined Samsung’s commitment to offering consumers the freedom to pick the perfect smartphone for their needs. The series featured a total of four unique models: the Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+, and S10 5G. Each boasted an Infinity-O Display, which featured an all-screen design that included a tiny circular cut-out for the front camera, as well as Dynamic AMOLED technology that had been certified to deliver 100 percent mobile color volume in the DCI-P3 color range. In all, the Galaxy S10 introduced a variety of intelligent features including Wireless PowerShare, which essentially lets users use their phone as a wireless charging pad.

By incorporating 5G support into each model, the Galaxy S20 series marked the beginning of a new era for mobile devices. The combination of the series’ largest image sensor yet and powerful AI tools guaranteed clear photos and videos, while a 120Hz AMOLED display opened the door for more immersive viewing and gaming experiences. The Galaxy S20 Ultra’s pro-grade, 108-megapixel camera represented a massive leap forward for resolution, allowing users to zoom in up to 100x to capture moments and details that they may have missed. Samsung also enhanced the devices with a secure processor that worked in conjunction with its mobile security platform, Knox, to ensure that users’ data would remain protected even from advanced hardware attacks.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first device in the series to include support for Samsung’s signature S Pen. The combination of the S Pen and the available S View Flip Cover allows users to take full advantage of the S Pen experience. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also the first Samsung smartphone to feature two telephoto lenses offering 10x optical zoom and up to 100x Space zoom. With a large, 6.8-inch display, the Galaxy S21 Ultra offers users a more immersive and enriching mobile experience.

The device’s front and rear are seamlessly integrated to complete the camera’s eye-catching design. Advanced AI technology makes the Galaxy S21’s camera Samsung’s smartest yet, enabling features that make every day epic by helping users capture the best possible photo or video. In addition to producing clearer selfies, the technology offers users the ability to snap portrait photos that look like they were taken by a professional, and lets them enhance their shots with various background effects. It also supports a new Zoom Lock feature, which compensates for smartphone users’ tendency to shake the camera slightly when zooming in to take a picture at high magnification. The new Director’s View feature, meanwhile, helps users pick the perfect lens for their recording by placing three preview screens beneath the camera’s viewfinder. It allows users to capture multiple moments and points of view within the same video, without the need for additional editing.

Other convenient enhancements include the ability to record 8K videos that are longer than one hour, an upgraded blue light filter, a fingerprint sensor that’s not only larger than the previous model but also twice as fast, and a feature that allows users to mirror websites on virtually any device after logging into their Samsung account.

The new flagship series debuts a head-turning, iconic design, an epic pro-grade camera for users of any skill level and the most advanced processor ever in a Galaxy device. And each device offers the connectivity, power and performance that only Samsung can deliver.

“We are living in a mobile-first world, and with so many of us working remotely and spending more time at home, we wanted to deliver a smartphone experience that meets the rigorous multimedia demands of our continuously changing routines,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “We also recognize the importance of choice, especially now, and that’s why the Galaxy S21 series gives you the freedom to choose the best device for your style and needs.”

For over a decade, the Galaxy S series has delivered groundbreaking, flagship mobile experiences for people who rely on their smartphone for expression, connection and entertainment. The new Galaxy S21 series builds on this legacy to offer the premium flagship experience and make every day epic. Galaxy S21 will be available in a variety of models, so you can find the perfect complement for your personal style and needs. For users who demand a flagship mobile experience, with pro-grade camera innovations and top-of-the-line performance, at various price points, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ deliver in every category — and then some.

Bold New Style

With a bold new style, Galaxy S21 is built for expression. Galaxy S21 was designed for those who want a light design and compact 6.2-inch display1. Galaxy S21+ sports an expanded 6.7-inch display and a larger battery, perfect for marathon gamers and binge-watchers2.

The Galaxy S21 series introduces an all-new, iconic Contour Cut Camera housing that seamlessly blends into the device’s metal frame for a sleek, yet striking, aesthetic. S21 and S21+ will be available in a range of eye-catching colors, including a new signature color: Phantom Violet. And each device is coated with a luxurious haze finish on the back for a sophisticated look and feel.

Galaxy S21 touts an intelligent, edge-to-edge Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O display with adaptive 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and viewing3. It automatically adjusts the frame rate based on the content whether you’re swiping through your social feeds or watching shows. The display is also easy on the eyes. To help reduce eye fatigue, the new Eye Comfort Shield4 automatically adjusts the blue light based on the time of day, content you’re viewing, and your bedtime.

Make Everyday Moments Epic

Galaxy S21 continues Samsung’s legendary camera heritage with pro-grade enhancements and video innovations that enable users of every skill level to get the best shot. Whether you’re recording your puppy’s first encounter with a mirror, chronicling series game night antics or documenting spectacular views on a week-long road trip, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ have you covered. Just point, shoot and let Galaxy S21 do the heavy lifting — so you can capture the moment before it’s gone.

Improved 8K Snap lets you grab crystal clear images from your 8K video footage, so you can capture all the live action and get standout still shots every time you hit record. Even in fast-moving or bumpy conditions, your footage will be buttery-smooth with Super Steady video at an improved 60fps5. New Director’s View lets you see, switch, and select the best shot to tell your best story. Capture video with the front and rear cameras at once for real-time reactions with Vlogger View, and preview or change the angle, zoom or go wide without losing any action with Live Thumbnails. Paired with Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds Pro6, you can capture both ambient sounds and your voice at the same time using multiple mic recording7. That means you can set up Galaxy S21 in Pro Video Mode on a tripod and use Buds Pro as your voice mic, so you can step away and record speech, movement and background sound in crisp quality. With the power of AI, the popular Single Take8 feature allows you to capture a variety of still and video formats with one tap. It has been enhanced with new pro-style video settings like Highlight Video and Dynamic Slow-Mo, which lets you focus on the most compelling action in stunning stills and highlight reels.

Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+’s AI-powered triple-lens pro-grade camera is designed for those times when you want to be more intentional and have more creative control. The camera system intuitively assesses and adjusts to your scene to ensure you can perfectly capture any environment. In Portrait Mode, the AI-powered camera leverages an improved 3D analysis that more accurately separates the subject from the background. It also brings in options for virtual studio lighting and AI background effects to make sure the subject pops from the frame. It also works for selfies too. For elusive faraway shots, whether you’re on a hike or sitting in the back row, improved Space Zoom helps you get clear and steady shots. The new Zoom Lock minimizes shaky hands and captures clearer images at 30x zoom on Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+, by leveraging AI to keep your focal point in the center of the frame. Plus, enhanced processing power means bright pictures, even in the dark, so you can do proper justice to gorgeous sunsets and skylines.

Connectivity and Performance That Delivers

Samsung is committed to helping you stay connected, and keeping your data secure, in more convenient and personalized ways. Galaxy S21 delivers next-generation performance and seamlessly connects you to the Galaxy Ecosystem to give you more flexibility, no matter your routine, so you can do more with confidence.

Galaxy users love and expect powerful experience. The Galaxy S21 features the latest and most advanced smartphone chipset yet in a Galaxy for greater speed, energy efficiency9, and advanced computing capabilities to support 5G connectivity and on-device AI10. Galaxy S21 packs all the power you need to process photos, record 8K videos, enjoy a cloud gaming marathon and make the perfect video clips.

We rely on our smartphones more than ever, which is why protecting sensitive information is more important than ever. Galaxy S21 is secured by Samsung Knox Vault, Samsung’s own proprietary chipset level (SoC) security platform. By adding tamper-resistant secure memory to our secure processor, Samsung Knox Vault enables S21 to add a new layer of protection.

Galaxy S21 also introduces a new tool to protect and monitor your privacy. You can safely remove location metadata from photos before sharing. With Galaxy S21’s all-new Private Share function11, you can also control who gets access to the content you send, and how long it’s available – so you can share content worry-free.

Galaxy S21 is designed to be used with other Galaxy devices and with SmartThings Find, it can help you quickly and easily locate your compatible Galaxy devices even when they’re offline. Whether you left your device in another room, under the seat of your car or in a completely different city, SmartThings Find will send you in the right direction. You can now locate non-connected devices, with Samsung’s new Galaxy SmartTag12 Bluetooth locator. Simply attach a SmartTag to your keys, a bag or even your pet’s collar and you can use SmartThings Find to find the item or your pet.

Samsung Electronics unveiled the Galaxy S21 Ultra, a flagship device that pushes the boundaries of what a smartphone can do. The S21 Ultra pulls out all the stops for those who want Samsung’s best-of-the-best with our most advanced pro-grade camera system and our brightest, most intelligent display. It takes productivity and creativity up a notch by bringing the popular S Pen experience to the Galaxy S series for the first time1.

“Galaxy S21 Ultra is another example of how Samsung is driving meaningful innovation forward to give people personalized experiences that enrich their lives and empower them to express who they are,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “Given how indispensable technology has been to our lives during these times, we wanted to take another leap forward and push the boundaries of what a smartphone can do.”

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the newest chapter in the Galaxy S series’ decade-long legacy of delivering cutting-edge mobile experiences. It’s built for users who demand top-of-the-line technology to stay connected with the people and things that matter most. Galaxy S21 Ultra joins the new Galaxy S series of devices and takes every part of that S21 experience to the next level.

Incredible Innovation Housed in Head-Turning Design

Galaxy S21 series unveils a bold new style that sets it apart from other smartphones. It introduces an all-new, iconic Contour Cut Camera housing that seamlessly blends into the device’s metal frame for a sleek, yet striking, aesthetic. Galaxy S21 Ultra available in Phantom Black and Phantom Silver and it is coated in a luxurious haze finish for an all-around sophisticated and timeless look. Galaxy S21 Ultra also has three Exclusive Samsung.com Colorways- Phantom Titanium, Phantom Navy, and Phantom Brown and offers improved durability with Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus, the toughest Gorilla Glass yet.

Galaxy S21 Ultra is the largest member of the Galaxy S21 series with a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display2. It is our most intelligent screen yet. For the first time, users no longer have to decide between the smoothness of a 120Hz refresh rate and a Quad HD+ display — on S21 Ultra, you can choose both. The screen’s refresh rate adjusts to the content you’re viewing from 10Hz to 120Hz to ensure you enjoy the best image while staying power efficient to stretch your battery life even further. Compared with the Galaxy S20, S21 Ultra offers a 25% brighter3 picture at a 1,500nits of peak brightness, the brightest on a Galaxy smartphone. With a 50% improved contrast ratio4, it delivers crystal-clear, immersive images, even when outside. And like the Galaxy S21 and S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra has Eye Comfort Shield5 to help reduce eye fatigue.

Samsung’s Best-in-Class Camera Experience

Galaxy S21 Ultra delivers with our most advanced pro-grade camera system, so that you can capture stunning, studio-quality photos in various lightings and settings, or shoot and edit videos with a toolbox of new AI-powered features that elevate every shot.

It has a quad rear camera (ultra-wide, wide and dual tele-lenses) that features a upgraded 108MP pro sensor, from which you can capture 12-bit HDR photos with 64 times richer color data and more than three times wider dynamic range6. For the first time on a Galaxy smartphone, you can shoot in 4K at 60fps across all lenses including front and rear four lenses, so you can shift to a different perspective with the same quality. Plus, with a 12-bit RAW file option7, you won’t miss a single detail when editing photos.

When zooming in on S21 Ultra, you don’t have to worry about sacrificing clarity. The Galaxy S21 Ultra features 100x Space Zoom which is powered by Samsung’s first-ever Dual-tele lens system – one optical 3x and one optical 10x both equipped Dual Pixel(2PD) AF – so you can capture clear shots even when you are away from the action.

Galaxy S21 Ultra’s improved Bright Night sensor is Samsung’s biggest leap yet in low-light photography. With improved Night Mode, noise reduction and 12MP Nona-binning technology, you can capture challenging shots – like a dimly-lit room, or a landscape at night – quickly and with excellent quality.

Smart, Hyper-Fast Connections Across Devices

Galaxy S21 Ultra continues Samsung’s legacy of delivering trailblazing technology like Ultra-wideband (UWB) and introduces new connectivity capabilities that will transform the way you interact with your devices.

Galaxy S21 Ultra users expect the flagship smartphone experience to take creative expression and productivity to the next level. That’s why, for the first time on any S Series device, Samsung is bringing the fan favorite S Pen experience to the Galaxy S21 Ultra with Wacom’s technology8. From drawing to note-taking to editing photos and signing documents, now you can unlock the power of the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Use an existing S Pen from a Galaxy Note or Galaxy Tab or purchase an S Pen separately on its own or with a compatible case.

For better and faster connectivity, Galaxy S21 Ultra is one of the first smartphones to support Wi-Fi 6E9. You will be able to enjoy more bandwidth and a faster internet connection10, so you can stream and share content in the blink of an eye. With hyper-fast, ultra-low latency 5G, S21 Ultra is built to provide fast video downloading, smooth video conferencing and streaming11.

Thanks to the Ultra-wideband capabilities (UWB) embedded in Galaxy S21 Ultra and S21+, you will be able to use your Galaxy S21 device to automatically unlock compatible car doors without pulling out your keys12. With the UWB-enabled Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S21+, you can also use AR finder to drop virtual messages that let other Galaxy smartphone users know you need help searching for a lost item13.

And with SmartThings on Android Auto14, you can also use your Galaxy S21 series to control smart devices in your home, from your car. By connecting your Galaxy S21 to your Android Auto compatible car, you can turn on your porch lights or even raise the temperature of your thermostat before you return home, all from your car.

And because you need uninterrupted, long-lasting connections across your entire ecosystem of connected devices, the Galaxy S21 Ultra employs Dual Bluetooth® technology that helps your connected devices like Galaxy Buds Pro15 consume less battery with a stable connection.

Performance and Protection You Can Count On

The ground-breaking camera, display and connectivity capabilities of the Galaxy S21 Ultra are powered by the most advanced chipset in a Galaxy device. It offers faster speed16, advanced computing and greater energy efficiency. And when the battery gets low, Galaxy S21 Ultra can reach a 50% charge17 in just 30 minutes18.

With Galaxy S21’s all-new Private Share function, you can also control who gets access to the content you send, and how long it’s available19.

Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of its next-generation earbuds: Galaxy Buds Pro. These earbuds feature immersive sound, superior call quality, intelligent ANC and enhanced connectivity across your devices – all packed into a modern and sleek design. Galaxy Buds Pro represent Samsung’s most premium earbuds offering to date, built to help you get the most out of your work, entertainment, and everything in between.

“As people look for technology that helps them adapt to new routines and lifestyles, the market for true wireless earbuds has expanded substantially, and consumer expectations have risen,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “With Galaxy Buds Pro, we’re making a big statement with a small device, offering users a one-of-a-kind audio experience that makes even everyday tasks truly epic.”

Unparalleled Sound & Call Quality

A premium earbuds experience always starts with sound. Whether you use your earbuds to play music on a run or listen to podcasts on the way to work, audio quality is what matters most. Galaxy Buds Pro offer a more comprehensive sound, sporting an 11-millimeter woofer for deeper bass and a 6.5-millimeter tweeter for a crisp treble with minimum distortion. This delivers Samsung’s best audio experience yet – a dynamic, balanced sound. So, whether it’s a rhythmic hip hop groove or intricate classical melody, you can enjoy your music just as the artist intended, anytime and anywhere.

But earbuds aren’t just for entertainment anymore – they’ve become crucial for work communication, and call quality is more important than ever. Galaxy Buds Pro separate your voice from unwanted sounds with three microphones and a Voice Pickup Unit (VPU), ensuring you are heard as clearly as possible. One of the outer microphones also has a high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), further eliminating background noises. In addition, Samsung has integrated its new Wind Shield technology into Galaxy Buds Pro. While a less protrusive shape minimizes the wind contact area, a specially designed chamber and mesh filters out wind interference. Your phone calls have never been clearer, even if you’re stuck in windy weather.

Most Intelligent ANC on True Wireless Earbuds

The Galaxy Buds Pro experience is about hearing more of what you love, and less of what you don’t. That’s why Galaxy Buds Pro have the most intelligent ANC capabilities of any true wireless earbuds.1 When you need to focus on work – or tune out from the world around to relax – you can reduce the background noise by up to 99 percent,2 fine-tuning to your preferred level. And with Ambient Sound, you can choose to amplify nearby sounds by more than 20 decibels, meaning you can adjust and personalize according to your needs. This feature is ideal for busy multitaskers – those working from home while looking after a child or those who want to take a run through the city while staying alert for oncoming traffic.

What’s more, ANC and Ambient Sound automatically work together, adapting to your surroundings, to optimize your audio experience. Galaxy Buds Pro recognize when you’re speaking, and they can automatically switch between canceling nearby sounds and amplifying them.3 They will also turn down your music when you want to talk, even if you are using Ambient Sound or have ANC turned off. This technology allows you to hear and communicate more effectively and makes Galaxy Buds Pro the perfect tool for daily use.

An Even More Seamless Galaxy Experience

Galaxy Buds Pro are an integral extension of the Galaxy ecosystem – our most seamless earbuds yet. Now, you can automatically toggle your earbuds connection between your Galaxy smartphones and tablets based on your usage – no manual adjustments required.4 For example, if you’re watching a video on your Galaxy Tab S7 and then receive a call on your Galaxy S21, the all-new Auto Switch feature will pause the video and let you answer the phone using Galaxy Buds Pro. Once the call is over, your earbuds instantly switch back to your tablet; the video plays again, and you can hear the audio through your earbuds again.

Galaxy Buds Pro also expand your audio experience by connecting with other Galaxy devices – especially Galaxy S21. You can enjoy realistic and immersive sound on your Galaxy Buds Pro, wherever you go with the 360 Audio featuring Dolby Head Tracking technology,5 which enables you to stay at the center of the scene. For vloggers, you can clearly capture your voice and surrounding sound by synchronizing the mics on your Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy S21. Galaxy Buds Pro also boast Game Mode, so when reduced audio latency is paired with Galaxy S21’s powerful performance and immersive display, you can take your gaming experience to the next level.

No matter how you use your Galaxy Buds Pro, you can do so without worrying about battery life. When fully charged, you get up to 8 hours of playback, with an additional 20 hours of reserve power available in the wireless charging case. Even when using ANC, you can still enjoy 5 hours of playback with 13 hours more available in the case.6 If you end up running out of juice, you can gain one hour of playtime after just five minutes of quick charging.7

New Stylish & Purposeful Design

Galaxy Buds Pro aren’t just great to use, they also look great. Taking inspiration from Galaxy Buds Live’s innovative and iconic shape, Galaxy Buds Pro feature an updated, more ergonomic form factor. The shape of the canal-type earbuds improves sound quality, plus it looks less protrusive and more natural when in your ears. This new design also reduces the contact area between your ear and the bud, improving comfort and minimizing a clogged-up feeling.

In addition, Galaxy Buds Pro are designed to give you added peace of mind. They are protected with an IPX7 water resistance rating,8 the highest standard of water resistance in the Galaxy Buds line. And now, worrying about losing an earbud is a thing of the past. SmartThings Find can easily locate either of your earbuds, even when they’re out of Bluetooth® range or completely out of sight, misplaced at a distant location.9 Galaxy Buds Pro were also built to help cut down on waste – using 20 percent environmentally conscious Post-Consumer Materials (PCM).

Availability

Galaxy Buds Pro come in three stunning colors: timeless Phantom Black and Phantom Silver, and an incredible Phantom Violet10 to match with your Galaxy S21. Galaxy Buds Pro will be available in select markets starting from January 15th.
