Samsung Electronics announced today the launch of SeeColors app for QLED TV, which is compatible with all Samsung QLED TVs. The SeeColors app^* for QLED TV helps people with Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) identify their personal visual deficiencies through the app. Based on the individual’s results, QLED TVs, featuring 100% color volume, adjust the color settings on the display, allowing viewers with CVD to enjoy a viewing experience with more optimized colors.

Nearly 300 million people globally have CVD, with approximately 8% of men and up to 1% of women affected^**, based on a representative survey conducted in Europe and North America. However, the majority of people with CVD are unaware of their condition and the impact it has on their quality of life.

Through the SeeColors app on the TV, users can identify the type and level of their CVD then directly recalibrate their QLED TV screen based on their personal results. To offer an easy method for people to identify CVD, Samsung Electronics partnered with Professor Klara Wenzel who heads up the Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Mechanical Engineering Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to adopt the Colorlite Test, or C-Test, for TV and mobile devices. C-Test, developed by Professor Wenzel, is a digital test that uses the concept of color filters and mathematical modeling to identify CVD. Adopting the C-Test through the SeeColors app has resulted in a simple solution which gives people with CVD the opportunity to see the world through their QLED TVs in more optimized color.

The SeeColors app is available for download from the Smart TV App store. Users can also download the app to conduct the test through Google Play and the Galaxy App Store for Samsung Galaxy smartphones S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge and S8 devices. Once users connect their Galaxy smartphone to their QLED TV, the TV will automatically adjust the color setting based on the user’s results.

The SeeColors app is created in partnership with Colorlite®, a Hungarian company that applies certified technology based on 20 years of scientific research to lenses to help people address CVD. The SeeColors app marks the first time Colorlite® is being used on TVs and smartphone devices.

Custom Mode Raises Enjoyment Levels Even More

For advanced game users wanting to be more in control on how to set the modes, Game Tuner also offers a Custom Mode, which allows them to customize individual settings, screen resolution and frame rate. Additionally, those settings can be specified for each game, so that each game can be played more efficiently.

Here are a couple of tips when using Custom Mode. First, it is best to optimize the screen resolution to fit the game. For instance, in case of WQHD resolution devices (2560×1440), if a game was developed with HD resolution (1280×720) in mind, then the phone’s resolution should be set to Low. For a game with FHD resolution (1920×1080), then Medium is more adequate. Even if the resolution is set higher, the user will not experience much difference. The resolution can be adjusted according to power consumption and the game environment.

A few rules also apply when adjusting frame rate. In general, human eyes perceive screen movement of more than 30 frames per second to be “smooth.” For this reason, when enjoying simple games, such as puzzles or card games, it is recommended that the frame rate to be set at 30 frames per second. For games that emphasize impressive and detailed movements, like action games or fighting competitions, it is better to increase the frame rate.

More and more consumers are illustrating their life stories with pictures. When Samsung designers and engineers were envisioning the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the camera was a key area of focus. The Galaxy S6’s front and rear cameras are the perfect companions for all journeys. Most photographers will tell you that besides the device, the skill and capability of the photographer dictate the quality of the picture. But at Samsung, we decided to put this to test with the help of 10 Indian journalists and technology bloggers to see whether the average consumer can utilize the features of the Galaxy S6 camera to produce professional photographs and videos.

We embarked on a momentous journey, armed with the Galaxy S6 and its brilliant cameras, to capture the beauty of a town nestled in the heart of the Himalayas in the Indian state of Sikkim. Pelling is abundant with nature’s beauty and offers the perfect opportunity to capture compelling and scenic pictures. And that’s precisely what we wanted – to capture nature in her element with the vivid camera of the Galaxy S6, which brings even ordinary scenes to life in the most extraordinary way.

Over the three days of our Photowalk, photojournalist Sanjay Austa, took the group through the basics of photography and our product expert helped the enthusiastic group through the many camera features, which include Selective Focus, Slow Motion, Panorama Mode and the Wide Selfie Mode, among others.

Throughout the trip, our photography enthusiasts were engrossed in clicking pictures of the awe-inspiring scenery. Even a downpour couldn’t stop them. The various scenic locations in Pelling offered a plethora of opportunities for our photographers to shoot pictures, which explored the beauty of nature and tested the cameras in various lighting conditions.

Whether it was during early morning walks at sunrise, during the bright sunshine of the afternoon on the gardens and hill slopes, or during sightseeing trips in the mountains bathed in the setting sun at dusk, the Galaxy S6 demonstrated unparalleled camera quality. It captured with vivid clarity the monks in serene monasteries, the colorful flags, the fluttering kites and the temple bells. Gushing waterfalls were captured with the Slow Motion Mode, the engravings in monasteries were taken with the Selective Focus mode and the group took closeups of rare blooms of orchids in the rainforest – all great memories for the group.

“The future of photography is the smartphone camera,” said Austa. “Professionals do not want to carry heavy equipment around if the same job can be done with your phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is fast, has innovative features and can come in handy everywhere a professional camera can.”

At the end of the Photowalk, the group reviewed the more than 2,500 shots that we had captured. Some were amazed to see the professional quality of the shots that they themselves had captured. The Photowalk ended with a firm belief that with a device like the Samsung Galaxy S6, one can never miss capturing any moment in great detail.

In today’s modern lifestyle, people are busier than ever and they demand more from their smartphones so they can keep up with the frenetic pace of life. Naturally, people want to multi-task to be more productive and use their time more efficiently.

On the long list of intuitive and practical features offered by Galaxy devices, the Multi Window capability is perhaps one of the most under-appreciated. The Multi Window feature has been available on Galaxy devices since the Galaxy Note 2, released in late 2012, however users of the Galaxy S3, also released in 2012, were able to watch videos without interruption through Pop-up Play. And since then, the multi-tasking capabilities have only improved with each edition, and they have become a mainstay on Galaxy S, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab devices that followed.

It certainly comes in handy in lots of different situations, like using a map app while exchanging texts when making arrangements to meet a friend. Or, to keep an eye on sports scores while watching a video, or to browse the Internet to find information while also writing an email. With the Galaxy Note 4, you can easily take notes using the S Pen during a video chat by splitting the screen.

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, you can quickly and easily open two apps at the same time. From any screen, simply touch and hold the Recent Apps button (just to the left of the home button). Apps that support Multi Window will be displayed.

Simply select the two you want to use and they will appear in split view, one on top, one on the bottom. You can also launch recently used apps directly into the multi window view. Apps that can be used with multi window will have the multi window icon on the title bar.

The window controls, which appear between the two windows, allow you to adjust the size of each window, minimize or maximize a window, drag and drop content from one window to another, or switch the location of the windows. When you minimize an app, it turns into a circular, movable icon that can be opened by tapping on it. It’s extremely easy and intuitive.

There’s also pop-up view. Simply open an app and then swipe diagonally from either top corner of the screen and the app will appear as a pop-up, which you can move around the home screen. So when you are multitasking but you need to focus on one app, you can keep another app just one touch away.

Tap the button to see the control options or hold and drag to create a pop-up window.

On the Galaxy Tab S, touch the recent apps button and swipe upwards or downwards and tap the Multi Window icon on the recent app window. The selected app will launch in the upper window. You can also launch the split screen by tapping and holding the recent apps button. Much like with the Galaxy S6, you can find additional options by tapping the circle between the app windows. If you are the proud owner of a Galaxy Note Pro or Galaxy Tab Pro device, it is possible to have four windows open simultaneously.

Also, Samsung’s SideSync 3.0 app is a PC-Mobile solution that enables screens, windows and data to be shared between PCs and Galaxy smartphones, or between Galaxy Tabs and Galaxy smartphones. The app allows you to connect to your smartphone and launch the phone as a window on the screen of your Galaxy Tab or PC, which can be adjusted for size. There are a whole host of sharing functions, including keyboard and mouse sharing mode, file and clipboard sharing and lots more.

Finally, with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and Galaxy Note 4, if you happen to be using an app, watching a video or playing a game when a call is received, a pop up window appears on the screen. With the pop up window, you can choose to answer, reject or tap expand to view the main call screen. After answering the call, you can exit the call screen during an active call to do something else, like access your contacts list, view an email or locate a picture. To return to the call screen, simply got to the notification panel and tap the call notification. You can also click end call from the notification panel.

To showcase the durability of this new technology, Corning started a campaign that is taking travel bloggers to some of the toughest locations in the world to put it to the test.

Gorilla Glass 4 can be used at a thinness of 0.4mm, or about the thickness of four sheets of 20-pound paper. It can survive drops from 1m up to 80% of the time. During testing, Corning dropped its Gorilla Glass 4 devices a combined total of about 26km. That’s two times higher than commercial airplanes fly. Gorilla Glass 4 is up to two times better than competitive glass designs in devices dropped from 1m in laboratory tests. So to show just how tough Gorilla Glass 4 is, Corning’s campaign let well-known bloggers document their tough travel experiences with the Samsung Galaxy S6. Called Tough Drops Hidden in Plain Sight, the campaign shows the group of travelers putting their devices to the test.

Corning’s first stop with its blogger team (aptly named the Gorilla 4, as each destination includes three bloggers, plus famed travel photographer JD Andrews), was Oregon in the United States. Corning chose some of the world’s most unique locations, such as Mount St. Helens, Columbia River Gorge, Painted Hills, Smith Rock, Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cape Disappointment.

In particular, the Gorilla 4 team, which included bloggers Teri Johnson, Mariellen Ward, Beth Santos, and Andrews, hiked up Mount St. Helens, which had the deadliest volcanic eruption in U.S. history nearly 35 years ago. Here, they witnessed the devastation and re-birth of a volcanic wasteland. All Samsung Galaxy S6 devices with Gorilla Glass 4 made it back without a scratch.

“Using a smartphone on my travels is how I share my adventure,” Andrews said. “When I see something or someone interesting, I don’t have to get into my camera bag, turn on the camera, take the lens cap off, make sure the settings are correct, etc. I now can just grab my smartphone and capture that moment right away without missing that incredible opportunity.” After using the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S6 he commented, “I really like the Galaxy S6 feature when you say “Cheese”, “Capture”, “Smile” or “Shoot” it takes a photo. That really helps when you want to get creative or are unable to use both hands.”

One of his favorite photos taken on the trip is one with drops of rain water about to drip off of a leaf. “It’s so clear!” he said. “I loved ‘catching’ that moment in time.”

In addition, Samsung built new earphones for the Galaxy S6. Earphones are the accessory that allows us access to our personalized worlds, and blocks out background noise at the same time.

Starting with the Galaxy S6, Samsung gave them a name, In-ear Fit.

When developing the In-ear Fit, Samsung began with the question: what makes a good earphone a great earphone? The answer could be found in sound quality and comfort. To achieve both, Samsung went back to the drawing board to create a hybrid design that blends two types of earphones—canal-type earphones and open-type earphones— and delivers superior sound quality with a sophisticated look.

In general, canal-type earphones are inserted in the ear canal, providing an intimate sound experience and blocking out external noise; however, they can also irritate the ear canal after prolonged use. Meanwhile, open-type earphones are fitted directly in the outer ear but not inserted in the ear canal. They generally allow for some helpful external noise to seep in, such as a passing bicycle or car honk. But they also make it more difficult to concentrate on the sound.

Thanks to the design of In-ear Fit earphones, Samsung has overcome the challenge of getting top-quality bass sound from such a physically small device.

To deliver better sound quality in treble, Samsung re-designed the diaphragm using a ‘free-edge’ concept, and also used an innovative new material. The double dome-type free-edge structure provides a richer and clearer sound, which is enhanced by the high density and elasticity of the center dome with a new material.

Samsung also worked to tailor the fit so that its earphones comfortably fit every unique user. In addition, we adapted the silicon covers to ensure long-lasting comfort and optimal wearability. All silicon covers have the resilience that helps them suit today’s busy lives. Whether the user is commuting, exercising or just attempting to block out the daily racket, the earphones need to stay in place comfortably and with ease.

To find out the right size and design for everyone, Samsung made lots of prototypes based on research from around the globe and conducted dozens of user trials. As a result, Samsung could provide the broader choice of three differently sized silicon covers.

Now anyone who doesn’t have the Galaxy S6 can still buy and enjoy the In-ear Fit to use with smart devices. Today’s technology is not just delivering a product that is smart; it is delivering a product that allows for an expression of fashion sense. Earphones should be no exception. That’s why the In-ear Fit being sold separately comes in four colors – Blue-black, Blue, Red and White. One pair of silicon ear wing tips, which help to fix the earphones in place even during strenuous exercise, can help to enhance the listening experience with the In-ear Fit.

Part 1: Design

In the first installment, Minhyouk Lee, Vice President and Head of the Design Team at the Mobile Communications Business, discussed how the design for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge was born. Rather than building on previous versions of the Galaxy S, Lee and his team started at zero, developing the concept of “Beauty Meets Purpose.”

Part 2: Cameras

The second editorial in the series, Heung-Sik Jung, a camera R&D engineer, wrote about the specs on the front and rear camears of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Jung discussed how the camera engineers found ways to make the cameras better than ever while dealing with stringent space restraints. The team opted to enlarge the sensors while maintaining the overall thinness of the cameras. A wider aperture (F1.9) means better photos in low-light. They also applied Auto Real-time HDR on both cameras.

“Of course, not all smartphone users have an expert-level of knowledge of all the features of the camera. However, users want to be able to capture the beautiful moments of their everyday lives with high-quality pictures and videos, even if they don’t have expert knowledge of their phone’s features. The Galaxy S6 allows users to take high quality pictures at any time by simply pressing the shutter, without having to consider any background factors or conditions.” – Heung-Sik Jung

Part 3: Wireless Charging

Principal engineer Se-Ho Park wrote about the groundbreaking wireless charging capabilities in part 3 of the series. Park explains how his team’s main challenge was slimming down the wireless charging components enough to fit inside the thin device. For the last few years, wireless charging had limitations. Users need a buy a thick cover accessory and many complained that charging time took too long. Samsung engineers were able to fix these issues for the Galaxy S6.

“I am proud that wireless charging was introduced and believe that it will become an innovation that will benefit users. Although wireless charging technology existed before, we were able to apply the technology to a model and take it a step closer towards commercialization.” – Se-Ho Park

Part 4: Display

Jason Choi, Principal Engineer at Display Lab, discusses the immersive power of the state-of-the-art display in part 4 of the series. Choi writes about how the adaptive display technology maximizes viewing experience depending on the circumstances and how the Display Lab team worked to make the screen more energy efficient without compromising on image quality.

Part 5: Sound

In the penultimate installment of the series, Senior Engineer Gunhyuk Yoon explained how his team made the most of very limited real estate, creating a speaker for the Galaxy S6 that was 1.5 times more powerful that the one on the Galaxy S5.

“Eventually, the speaker was moved to the bottom of the phone and we were able to secure a few extra millimeters, allowing us to reproduce high-quality original sound at a wider range with the high-powered speaker. Part 6: Materials

In the final editorial of the series, Principal Engineer Kwangjin Bae explained the advantages as well as the obstacles, presented by the new glass and metal used to build the Galaxy S6. A stronger type of aluminum was used, along with the latest strong glass, in order to ensure the Galaxy S6 was as durable as possible.

“It is a demonstration that often leaves people in awe. A full grown man attempts to break a thin glass plate by bending it with both hands, even stepping on it for extra leverage. He then picks up aluminum brick and slams it with great force on the glass plate. When all is said and done, both the glass and the aluminum remain in immaculate condition. It is a demonstration that often leaves people in awe. A full grown man attempts to break a thin glass plate by bending it with both hands, even stepping on it for extra leverage. He then picks up the aluminum brick and slams it with great force on the glass plate. When all is said and done, both the glass and the aluminum remain in immaculate condition. These are the materials we used to make the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

When we developed the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the goal was to make Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone as strong and durable as possible, beginning with the metal chassis.

There were two missions that had to be completed with regard to the Galaxy S6 metal material. It had to be strong, yet it also had to be possible to make it elegant in post-processing (surface treatment). The metal handset itself is not a new idea, but the new phone had to have far superior functionalities than the existing products in the market. In short, the material needed to be thin and powerful. So we used 6013 aluminum, a high-strength aluminum alloy. This was the first time this kind of aluminum was used in a smartphone.

Why did we choose 6013 aluminum? A brief demonstration makes it obvious. The photo below shows the results of us banging together two types of aluminum: 6063, which is the standard type of aluminum used in electronics, and 6013. As you can see, the 6063 block has deep dents while 6013 survived with only minor scratches.

6013 aluminum — which is typically used in products that require high durability, such as aircraft parts, submarines, mountain bikes and yachts — is 1.5 times stronger and 1.2 times more durable than 6063.

The flip side of 6013’s strength is that it is difficult to work with in post-processing (surface treatment). We typically use a process called sandblasting in which a fine ceramic powder is used to create a luxurious matte finish. But because the aluminum was too strong, it was not easy to create a consistent surface. We had to develop a stronger method than the one that had been used previously, and numerous tests were carried out in order to find the optimal particle.

But our challenges did not end there. To make matters worse, the anodizing method we had used to process the exterior of our smartphones in the past was leading to the yellowing of the surface color. Anodizing creates a film on the surface of the metal so that color can be added. A chemical process is required to ensure the color is absorbed evenly.

We were faced with the prospect of having to completely discard the existing technology that had been used in mass production over the last several years. In the end, our equipment had to be changed to accommodate the new conditions. The new metal certainly presented some significant challenges, but in the end we were able to overcome the obstacles.

The photo below shows a 320-gram aluminum plate before processing on the left. After precision processing that required 20 different phases, we arrive at the 15-gram piece of strong yet thin metal on the right. It is no so dissimilar from a craftsman working on a gemstone to produce a gem.

Making Thin and Strong 3D Glass

The Galaxy S6 edge may very well be the epitome of 3D glass technology at its finest. The dual edge design uses Gorilla Glass 4 that is even thinner than the glass used for the Galaxy Note 4 Edge. Gorilla Glass 4 is a reinforced glass that is strengthened using a process in which the glass is soaked in chemicals. The sodium component of the glass is replaced by potassium, which has a larger molecule particle. The reinforcing processes give the glass stronger resistance to external shocks.

Samsung’s unique 3D thermoforming technology also played a vital role but determining the right temperature and pressure was very difficult. When we raised the temperature, the glass surface crumpled and when the temperature was set too low, the glass broke. We had to find the optimal 3D thermoforming condition to make certain that the surface quality was even and the precision degree of the measurement was right. After dozens of trials of making the molding frame with the right temperature and pressure, we were successful in producing the optimal 3D thermoforming condition that ensured we could get it just right. For the Galaxy S6, the 3D glass was molded at a temperature of 800℃ and machined to precision. The glass endured 15 sophisticated processes, including forming, machining, polishing of interior and exterior surfaces.

The development team for the Galaxy S6 worked around the clock. It was one of the most difficult times of my life and all the members of the group from bottom to the top worked together as one in developing the new product. It was not an easy task because it was unchartered territory for all of us. Based on the experience of developing Galaxy S6, we promise to continue to deliver products with differentiated values to consumers in the future.

Getting the balance right, however, is not easy. If you invest in an item, you do not want to reduce its value. That is why Samsung decided to expand its own range of accessories and create the perfect complements to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

There are of course, plenty of third-party accessories already out there. With Samsung’s own range of products, consumers know they are using accessories specifically created to enhance both the design and performance of their device.

When it is sunny outside, it is hard to see the screen clearly. On the other hand, looking at a bright display in a dark place causes eye fatigue. In such cases, Adaptive Display can be a solution.

Adaptive Display allows users to see the screen at an optimal brightness and color temperature in any circumstances, and maximize the viewing experience. The Clear Colors of the Super AMOLED Screen for Everyone

Another key feature is its enhanced accessibility for those who have difficulties in distinguishing certain colors. Statistics show that about 6% of the global population deals with this issue, so Samsung came up with a new technology that enables them to perceive color differences just as others do.

The key enabling factor of this technology was a Super AMOLED that can control each pixel separately. Unlike a TFT LCD, each RGB pixel emits light and operates by itself. Based on this feature, our team designed the new technology so that people having this type of difficulty can adjust the color to an optimal level.

Lower Battery Consumption, Yet Higher Performance

The display consumes a large part of a smartphone’s battery. So, we can use smartphones longer if we achieve higher energy efficiency in the display. The Display Lab worked closely with relevant teams in Samsung Display to promote the efficiency of organic material, and improve the circuit design so that each pixel can emit light with less energy. Ultimately, 20% better power efficiency was achieved.

Lower power consumption, however, did not compromise image quality. The Quad HD Super AMOLED of the Galaxy S6 has 577 pixels per inch (ppi) and presents very detailed and crystal clear images. Reading and watching content on this panel gives viewers an incomparable experience.

A Meaningful Challenge, Galaxy S6 edge

What is the most attractive part of the Galaxy S6 edge? Answers can be varied, however, most would pick out the dual edge display over other features. The flexible display, curved on both sides, boasts not only external beauty but also creates a unique three-dimensional effect. Without fail, users are immersed in vivid color and clear picture.

This gorgeous dual edge display would not have seen the light of day were it not for years of effort. So how did this unparalleled invention come into being?

We, in fact, already unveiled a flexible display panel mounted on Galaxy smartphones several years ago, and when we released the Galaxy Note edge, this unseen curved design generated a sensation. However, curving both sides was a challenge on a whole new level, even for Samsung. In particular, putting the curved tempered glass on the flexible display at even pressure required highly-detailed manufacturing skills. Bonding the curved glass to the display body demands highly advanced techniques, but it was even more challenging for the Galaxy S6 edge as the glass is curved on both sides.

We knew how difficult this job would be, and how many roadblocks were out there. Wireless charging has truly arrived.

According to a market research firm, in 2015 the global wireless charging market will expand by more than 30-fold compared to the previous year. Starting with their San Francisco and Boston stores, Starbucks will be offering 100,000 PMA (Power Matters Alliance) wireless charging stations throughout 8,000 stores, with the intent to expand the service to stores in Europe and Asia. In 50 McDonald’s restaurants in the United Kingdom, 600 wireless charging hotspots have been deployed and are in use. UK restaurants along with McDonald’s have introduced or are preparing to adopt the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) compliant wireless charging service.

PMA and WPC are the two standards for global wireless charging. Ideally, these two different standards should be unified into an integrated system, but resolving this requires time. Until now, a smartphone that could be wirelessly charged at a US Starbucks store could not receive the same service at a McDonald’s in the UK. However, the Galaxy S6 supports both of these. It displays the most advanced wireless charging technology available.

Samsung’s smartphone wireless charging technology development goes back to the mid-2000s, when it launched a division solely devoted to wireless charging. It did not follow a standard or a certain technology, but rather began researching numerous technologies with the ultimate goal to distribute wireless charging technology that consumers can easily and conveniently use. As a result, the company was able to achieve results that utilized both PMA and WPC technologies.

Lab tests began in 2009, and it was first launched in the form of a wireless charging accessory cover at Verizon retailers in 2010 in the US. The wireless charging accessories and the Droid Charge (SCH-i510), released in 2010, were the first products that commercialized Samsung Electronics’ wireless charging technology. The wireless charging cover for the Galaxy S4 and S5, Note 3 and Note 4 garnered attention from global Samsung smartphone users and early adopters as an attractive accessory.

However, for the past few years, wireless charging was considered an unfinished technology that still required time. It had limitations in terms of performance and price that had to be overcome before it could actually be released into the market. Many users said the cover was too thick and the charging time was too long, that the accessories were too expensive and that there were not enough public places or cafes that offered wireless charging hotspots.

The biggest challenge was slimming down the device. We considered everything again from the beginning, including the project title, Zero, in order to make wireless charging a reality.

In the Galaxy S6, flexible coil patterns with two different thicknesses were put together, reducing the overall thickness. The application of the magnetic shielding material also utilized a new method of overlapping two types of filters with different characteristics – a method that had never been done before. The thickness of the coil and the magnetic shielding material in Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge was reduced to 0.27mm, approximately 1/3 of that in the Galaxy S5 (0.8mm).

The charging time for the Galaxy S6, whether it is wired or wireless, has become shorter. It took 120 minutes to fully charge Galaxy S5 (with wire charging) but the Galaxy S6 only requires 80 minutes. Within 30 minutes, the battery is charged over 50%. On top of the Adaptive Fast Charge technology that had been in use since the Galaxy S4, the S6 also introduced the Cell Sensing technology. The Cell Sensing technology accurately monitors the battery’s status by measuring current and voltage in the battery cell without the newly developed charger IC passing through the protection circuit inside the battery pack. With this technology, the fast charging feature becomes even faster and battery use more efficient. When the battery is almost out or when a significant amount of power is used during a simulation game, for instance, the smartphone Charger IC makes adjustments, maximizing battery life through the Cell Sensing technology.

But wire charging is uncomfortable and usually makes a mess of people’s desk areas with cords. Wireless charging allows people to charge their phones without connecting cords. People will be able to utilize the technology not just in their homes with an official Samsung wireless pad or other standardized products but also at frequently visited cafes or other public areas. We are discussing various collaboration plans to expand the infrastructure.

I am proud that wireless charging was introduced and believe that it will become an innovation that will benefit users. Although wireless charging technology existed before, we were able to apply the technology to a model and take it a step closer towards commercialization.

Using the camera is one of the top three functions for smartphone users, along with making calls and browsing the internet. Users usually produce most of their content with their smartphone camera. Because people are increasingly using smartphone cameras in situations in which they previously used a digital camera, they have become more demanding about smartphone camera features.

Many people expect high-quality shots even in low light, while others want cameras that can take good photos while on the move. In addition, consumers constantly share pictures and communicate through social media. With all these factors in mind, we came up with a camera for the Galaxy S6 that more than satisfies users’ needs.

As smartphones and the use of social media become more and more widespread, the culture of taking selfies has now grown into a social phenomenon. In order to meet the demands of users, the size of the image sensor of the front camera on the Galaxy S6 is 1.4 times larger in size compared to the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4. The camera resolution, 5 megapixels, is also greater than previous models. This is the first time that we have enlarged the sensors. Until now, we increased the resolution while minimizing the sensor size because of the trend of thinner and lighter smartphones. But this time, we focused on gaining resolution with bigger sensors. We managed to increase the camera sensor size while maintaining its overall thinness. The sensors on the rear camera could not be increased without making them any thicker. So instead, the rear camera lens was built with a lowered f-value (aperture value). The Galaxy S6 can take high quality dark shots as well as brighter shots since it can gather more light in the same situation with the improved aperture value. In addition, the shutter speed is quicker so that people can take pictures of whatever moment they want. Moreover, the software algorithm has been improved to provide photographs with higher definition.

The Galaxy S6 was the first to apply Auto Real-time HDR (High Dynamic Range) on both front and rear cameras. HDR is a function that merges images with different luminance into one. In a picture, the bright part may be blown off or the darker part may appear even darker. The HDR helps overcome such limitations. However, the way the previous HDR worked was by developing one image by merging separate images with different levels of brightness. Since this method required processing time, the user could not check the results instantaneously. In addition, the HDR technology could not be applied to video filming.

The Auto Real-time HDR allows real-time adjustments of light and dark spots for a balanced result. With photos and videos, users can check the images on the spot since there is no processing time required. Users can take pictures quickly without missing the important moments.

In particular, the Auto Real-time HDR proves its true merits when filming videos because it efficiently adjusts various levels of brightness while filming in different spaces. Moreover, the Galaxy S6 added the Low-light Video function as well as the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS). Under dark conditions or when shooting nightscapes, the Low-light Video function comes into action and raises the brightness, while the OIS modifies shaky videos due to hand movements.

Of course, not all smartphone users have an expert-level of knowledge of all the features of the camera. However, users want to be able to capture the beautiful moments of their everyday lives with high-quality pictures and videos, even if they don’t have expert knowledge of their phone’s features. The Galaxy S6 allows users to take high quality pictures at any time by simply pressing the shutter, without having to consider any background factors or conditions. The ‘Pro Mode’ is an option for those who want to control specific camera settings, satisfying users with professional knowledge over cameras.

How will the mobile camera trend evolve? The main focus will shift from pictures to videos. The OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) in Galaxy S6 and S6 edge was significantly improved, and shooting videos with difficult lighting will be easier with Auto Real-time HDR. Enhancement in the Low-light Video feature and image algorithm allows users to get excellent, brighter videos in low-light settings such as cafés or even in nighttime settings.

Achieving an overall DxOMark Mobile Score of 86, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are the new leader for smartphone image quality. This score puts it seven points ahead of its predecessor, the Galaxy S5, which now sits in fourth place overall with 79 points.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge’s overall DxOMark Mobile score of 86 is a combination of its performance results across still and video tests in the Photo and Video sub-scores. Achieving a Photo sub-score of 88 and a Video sub-score of 84 means that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are slightly better for still photography, but both results put the device ahead of the rest of the smartphone competition.

Mobile Photo Sub-scores 

Analysis of the data behind the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge’s DxOMark Mobile Photo sub-score of 88 identifies the smartphone’s strengths and weaknesses. Its strengths are good exposure, fast autofocus and good detail with minimal noise, characteristics that each received a score of 90 points or more. More importantly, its excellent Exposure & Contrast score of 90 was obtained while shooting in both bright light and low-light environments, with the latter often the downfall of smaller-sensor cameras.

Video Sub-scores

6. Enhanced Features, Enhanced Communication

Do you have most of your friends’ photos saved with their phone numbers in your Contacts? If yes, how many times do you change their pictures? Or is it still the same one from years and years ago when you first got their number? Enhanced features is a set of three improved native features (Contacts, Share, and Messages) that can help you communicate better with your friends and family. You only need to verify your phone number to sign up for these features; no other information is required. After this easy sign-up process, you can enjoy Enhanced features.

While the original Contacts doesn’t including your friends’ status or photo updates, Profile sharing lets you share your profile information with your friends without any SNS syncing. Your profile information can include a profile picture, your name, date of birth, address, e-mail address, and organization. You can also change the settings to share your profile with only a specific group of people.

Simple sharing will make file sharing much more convenient. Just choose the people in your Contacts you want to share photos or any other files with, and press send. You can share any files up to 1GB at a time, up to 2GB a day. Recipients who are Enhanced features users will receive push notifications for downloading the files, and non-users of Enhanced features will receive SMS messages with a URL. The shared files can be stored in the cloud server for two days, and can be downloaded all at once without having the user having to download the files one at a time. The mini player with basic functions focuses on the fundamentals, with only rewind, play, and fast-forward controls. SoundAlive adopted a new viewing style, changing from the old square view to two dials. These dials are your equalizer controls, for bass and treble, and for instrumental and vocal.

“I love the Avengers cases that Samsung created for the Galaxy S6. It’s weird to see my face on a phone cover, but I appreciate the love the Korean fans are showing using these cases,” said Chris Evans.

Viewers should also be able to spot a variety of Samsung devices in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron after it is released.

Downloading and installing a new Theme on your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge requires a few easy steps. You can access Themes on the settings menu of your device, either in Quick Settings or in the Personal section.

Or, on the homescreen, a long press or a pinch zoom out will reveal a Themes icon. Clicking on this will display the Themes menu.

Clicking on a Theme with an arrow pointing down will bring you to the Themes Store. If you haven’t logged into your Samsung account, you’ll need to agree to the terms and conditions first. Then you can download your selected Theme with two clicks.

To get new Themes, click the Store button in the top right corner of the Themes menu. This will allow you to browse the various Themes that Samsung offers to Galaxy S6 and S6 edge users. Once you’ve selected a Theme, click Download.

Once you’ve downloaded your Theme of choice, you can apply it to your device in the Themes menu.

From commemorating special events to sharing everyday experiences, emerging mobile camera technologies to meet rising demand

Cellphone cameras have been advancing rapidly, largely driven by the selfie craze, and now boast high-resolution cameras in both the front and the back, as well as wide-angle lenses and a real-time recording function. Mobile cameras are also expected to perform well in low-light situations and other scenarios where previous mobile cameras could not deliver quality images. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are equipped with 16MP main cameras and 5MP front cameras. Both front and main cameras on the Galaxy S6 feature high resolution and bright F1.9 apertures, which makes it possible to generate clear images in dark environments.

During the Imagining Future Camera Technologies forum at the Samsung Institute of Technology, Young-Kwon Yoon, Master of Camera R&D Group, stated that, “Until a few years ago, people used a camera only for special occasions, like when they go on a picnic or celebrate someone’s birthday. People now, however, frequently photograph every little detail of their lives using their smartphone cameras, for example food and drinks, daily fashion, and other small details are now being brought to attention more often. Among those images, only a few are actually printed and the rest are modified, shared, and discarded in a flash.”

Smartphone image trends are shaping the way manufacturers develop cameras for their devices. Samsung is the leader in smartphone camera technology and innovation, constantly trying to push boundaries and create unique features that will improve image quality and user’ overall satisfaction.

The Galaxy S6 is a prime example of a smartphone that has advanced features that set it apart from the rest of the competition, including Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), Phase Detection Autofocus (AF), High-Dynamic Range (HDR) and Selective Focus.

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)

Photo opportunities may present themselves when the photographer is on the move. What happens when the perfect photo opportunity happens while the photographer is, for example, a passenger in a moving car? The OIS in the Galaxy S6 is prepared for such situations and allows the user to capture crisp images even with unsteady hands and fast-moving environments.

The OIS accurately measures the motion of the camera caused by shaking hands to counteract it. For this to happen, the lens-shift correction technique has been applied. The lens-shift method inserts an actuator into the empty space between the lens and the sensor and makes it move horizontally to neutralize any hand shaking.

Phase Detection Autofocus (AF)

Speed and accuracy define the performance of an autofocus system. Based on how the light reaches the image sensors, the Phase Detection Autofocus determines if an object is front or back focused and by how much and then instructs the lens to adjust its focus rapidly. This technique is often used in DSLR cameras thanks to its agile response. It was first introduced in the Galaxy S5 and came back with more advanced features in the Galaxy S6. The AF allows a user not to miss the perfect photo opportunity by automatically tracking and refocusing on moving subjects. So, when a friend is driving around in a remote-controlled car, the user will be able to capture clear images no matter how sporadic the car moves about.

Phase AF: the camera can determine how much and in what direction the focus of the lens should be shifted.

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

The human eye can easily discern details inside a darkened room and brighter scenes outside the window at the same time. However, registering different lighting situations simultaneously is much more difficult for a camera to achieve. The High Dynamic Range techniques reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity than standard digital imaging, and deliver clearer and more vivid results even inside a shady room or against the sunlight.

Most previous HDR technologies post-processed images by combining different, short-exposure and long-exposure images to strike a balance. This lag in image production has been reduced by incorporating real-time HDR, which is built into the Galaxy S6. Enhanced by this new and powerful feature, both the front-facing and main cameras in the S6 can produce clearer and more dynamic images and selfies.

Selective Focus

The Selective Focus creates the DSLR-like, out-of-focus effect. Because DSLRs have a shallow depth of field, controlling focus point blurs the background and accentuates the main subject, giving the picture a dreamy quality. This effect can be duplicated using the Galaxy S6 with the Selective Focus mode. Selective Focus allows users to adjust focal points to achieve the desired look and feel of their images.

Mobile Camera Technologies that Will Change the Future

As smartphone technology advances, so will the expectations for performance and capabilities of their cameras. Here are three major smartphone camera innovations that we can look for in the near feature:

Depth Cameras

Depth Cameras produce a depth image or a depth map that tells the distance between the device and the subject. The method can be either active or passive, depending on the use of infrared (IR) light. Each has its pros and cons. The passive method has relatively lower accuracy at long distances, but consumes less electricity. On the contrary, the active method is less affected by the distance, but uses more power.

No one knows exactly what kind of services will be born out of this emerging area or which depth camera technology will survive in the competition. However, this is an unavoidable trend in the Internet-of-Things-related or video-based services and will find its place in a smartphone device soon.

Dual Cameras

The dual camera technology literally uses two cameras that face the same direction in order to achieve various outcomes. It can be categorized into four types by sensor and optical system. Dual cameras armed with homogeneous sensors whose angle of view is similar to each other are nearing commercialization. Plenty of research is in progress in this field, in order to reap the benefits that are unobtainable from a single camera, such as enhanced zooming, better performance in low light and the slimmer body.

Other Cutting-Edge Image Sensors

• Global Shutter

Currently, a mobile sensor uses the process commonly referred to as a “rolling shutter.” In this process, each pixel is exposed to light one after another as soon as the shutter is clicked. Because of this time gap, the subject is distorted. A global shutter does not have this issue as it controls incoming light to all photo sites simultaneously. Global shutters support only low-resolution images at the current stage; however, it will be further developed before long, powered by strong market demand.

• Curved Sensor

What would it be like if camera lenses resembled the human eye? The curved sensor has a curvilinear surface like the human retina. This artificial retina is expected to boost the optical performance or reduce the camera module’s thickness. But how to apply this technology still remains unclear. It is possible that other industries will find some useful ways of using it and come up with a new service model.

•  Organic Sensor

The organic sensor has an extremely thin, light-sensitive organic layer covering its surface, which dramatically improves its sensitivity. If a sensor is capable of dealing with both strong and weak signals, the image quality can be improved without increasing the sensor size. Or, the hardware can be downsized so that the camera does not ‘pop out’ in the back.

• Binary Image Sensor

Each image pixel on the binary image sensor is very small and can shrink to the size of dozens of nanometers. The resolution and frame rates can be freely configured depending on binary sampling methods. Much attention has been paid to this but the technology still has a long way to go.

Continuing Innovation

“Mobile cameras already produce images whose quality is as good as high-end digital cameras, at least on a display panel. This means that the increasing number of pixels is not going to guarantee the survival in the market. We need to make new breakthroughs,” said Young-kwon Yoon during the forum. “In the short run, the demand for a mobile camera that produces a quick and easy result everywhere is going to grow continuously. Another noticeable, recent phenomenon is the increasing interest in sharing videos online. Besides these ordinary video clips, new video contents, like the one offered by the Samsung Gear VR, will add more colors to user experience. We are going to work hard to come up with killer contents that will transform the mobile camera landscape in the long term.”

Future mobile technologies will do more than just anticipate the changes in consumer lifestyle. They will be the catalysts for these changes in consumer habits around the world. Rich video content created by state-of-the-art mobile cameras will broaden the range of user experiences and the Galaxy S6 and its successors will be the main players of this game.

As the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge hit the shelves around the world, a number of events are being held to celebrate the launch. Samsung Turkey will host a launching event on Friday, April 10 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (Eastern European time zone) in Istanbul.

The launch party will take place on Gelecek Benim, an artificial island that has been constructed exclusively for this event to make guests feel as if they have traveled to another galaxy. Set on the picturesque Bosphorus Strait, the mysterious structure, which has yet to be revealed, will be connected to the floating beach club of Suada via a futuristic bridge. Suada, known around the globe for its glamorous poolside parties and world-class cuisine, offers stunning views of the Kuruçeşme coastline.

After the unveiling of the structure on the night of the ceremony, the star-studded party will kick off with a light show, which will be followed by a spectacular water and laser show and a series of DJ performances.

One of the more anticipated performers of the evening is Turkish pop sensation Kenan Doğulu. Known for his impressive vocal talents, the musician will be performing at the event as a DJ for the first time in his career. TV stars Özge Gürel and Serkan Çayoğlu will also be in attendance as guests.

For those outside Turkey, the event will be recorded by a number of cameras, including one attached to a helicopter, and streamed on a live feed on YouTube (not available in Germany or the US). Video highlights of the party will also be posted on YouTube following the event.

A number of Galaxy S6 and S6 edge drop test videos have already been published, and as painful as it was to watch the beautiful Galaxy S6 and S6 edge bear the brunt of brutal drop-testing, most of the results made us proud.

Samsung devices are tried and tested before they can bear the Samsung logo. But some people still wonder: “The back is made of glass, can it bear drops?”, “What if it falls on the edge?”

Well, this video shows that Samsung had already taken these questions into consideration.

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge aren’t invincible, but they are capable of taking some hits. Below are a few reasons.

• Both Galaxy S6 and S6 edge feature Gorilla Glass 4, one of the toughest glasses available on mobile devices.
• Components like the frame, glass, bracket and others are also structured to share the shock from first and follow-up impacts, ultimately reducing the possibility of breakage.
• The 6013 aluminum metal frame is designed to hit the surface before the glass if the device is dropped in order to protect the display – even Galaxy S6 edge.

One change that’s immediately obvious is the application screen, which has been changed from black to white for better readability. Most importantly, though, the Samsung UX designers sharply reduced the number of menu options at every level and replaced ambiguous pictograms with clear and simple text. It does not take away from the phone’s functionality, but makes for a much faster and more intuitive user experience. Compared to previous devices, the number of steps to complete regular smartphone tasks has been reduced remarkably.

Reduce and remove for a simplified UX

Take the Contacts app on the Galaxy S6, and compare it to that of the Galaxy Note 4. Rarely used function tabs like Recent Contacts and Favorites have disappeared. Instead, there is a simple set of menu options, including Contacts, Groups and More. Clicking on More makes the new UX design philosophy even more obvious. The Galaxy S6 has narrowed this menu to just four options, Edit, Share, Manage Contacts and Settings – which is notably fewer than the Galaxy Note 4, which presented users with six options to choose from. This is the result of Samsung’s thorough survey on how people use their smartphones.

The Settings menu has also been slimmed down, with a similar offering of functions and structures that make it easy to get things done. In total, the Galaxy S6 offers 24 menu options arranged in four categories, including Connections, Personal, Device and System. It’s a significantly smarter and more efficient menu than the Note 4, which had a total of 34 menu options. The bottom line is Galaxy S6 provides already-optimized menu options, rather that cluttering the menus with too many options.

Samsung’s developers also improved the UX for the Galaxy S6 by reducing the number of pop-up alerts and notifications, such as Confirmation and Help.

The Graphic User Interface (GUI) is another area that has largely become simplified. Users want to focus on the information they regularly use. These kind of improvements can be found across the UX

By introducing text icons instead of pictograms, Samsung has simplified the way users access apps, which makes life a little easier for people who are not familiar with the system.

Samsung’s developers also purged the tech jargon and replaced it with normal language that users can understand. For example, the term Network SSID was replaced with Network Name, and Font Style with Font.

Another highlight of the improved UX is Visual interaction. For example, when you touch the screen to unlock the phone, a flow of water appears on the screen in response to your touch. When you slightly tilt the phone, the water flows in the same direction.

What’s more, when you swipe to the left or right of the Galaxy S6 edge home screen, the widgets and icons move seamlessly, as if they were smoothly gliding from one edge of the screen to the other.

Also, when you lock the screen, it doesn’t black out all at once. The center of the screen darkens and quickly spreads left and right, like a curtain effect, until the full screen is closed out and locked.

New UX, Unique and Powerful

The Galaxy S6 edge is the world’s first smartphone with a dual curved display. But the edges were not just made for aesthetic purposes. They also have a significant impact on how people use the device. The edges can display important information, including weather, stocks and news, when the phone is lying face down. This information is visible on the edges of the device and can be activated with a simple touch.

Samsung calls this display the People Edge, and it’s obvious why. With People Edge, different colors – blue, green, yellow, orange and purple – can be assigned to different people (one for each color). When one of them texts or calls, the phone will glow the assigned color. So whether you are in the middle of an important meeting or playing sports, the color will tell you instantly whether someone near and dear is trying to get in touch.

The Galaxy S6 is the first Galaxy S with Themes, which allow users to change the look and feel of the phone. Applying a theme will change the look of the lock screen, home screen and icons, as well as 14 applications such as Phone, Message, Clock and Calculator and the Notification Bar.

Samsung revealed a set of Avengers themes, a collaboration with Marvel, at MWC in March. More collaborations with other partners are also in the works. Samsung is developing a theme-maker tool that will be distributed to partners and individual theme designers.

Samsung has gone to great lengths to improve the UI and UX. It’s just one more thing that people are going to really love about the Galaxy S6 once they get their hands on it.

The news article contended that part-timers, acting as “fanboys”of Samsung smartphones, participated in the launching event. However, our findings have indicated that under no circumstances has anyone been hired or given money to attend the event. In fact, the more than 1,100 attendees, including consumers and industry officials, have all been formally invited to the Shanghai Culture Square where the event took place.

In the wake of the investigation, the media outlet that broke the story corroborated our findings and soon retracted the erroneous story. Separately, we are seriously considering whether to request the media outlet to take further action in the matter by issuing a correction. We will also continue our efforts to find out how this story came to be.

Fashion influencers were enthusiastic about the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge and took photos during a hands-on experience session.

They not only praised the beauty of the exterior design, with its dual curved edges, but also the user experience and other upgraded features such as the advanced camera functions.

“I think the way that we see music and fashion intertwining—and art and fashion, of course— has always been a part of this world, but now as soon as the lights come up at a runway show, everyone gets their phones out to get that great shot that’s Instagrammable or to tweet it out,” said stylist Brad Goreski, who co-hosted the event. “The great thing about these phones is that the camera is incredible and the design is really beautiful as well. So those of us who are very style-conscious and on our phones all the time, with the new S6 you don’t even have to put it in your bag — it’s just designed so beautifully.”

“It’s not a straight fashion accessory since it is very functional, but many people are becoming more interested in the aesthetics of things, how things feel,” said fashion blogger Susie Lau. “The Samsung Galaxy S6 is a phone that feels really good so it looks really good.”

The advanced camera function, which makes sure you “never miss a fashion moment” by instantly capturing beautiful and bright photos, was a big hit among the fashion media in attendance.

The second exclusive fashion event, “Galaxy S6 First Look,” was held on March 24, 2015 during Seoul Fashion Week at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), one of Seoul’s newest landmark buildings. At the event, models representing each of the Galaxy S6’s and Galaxy S6 edge’s available colors walked down the runway.

“The device is very powerful and aligned with our brand image: a fashionable and techy business man, now with his most stylish accessory: the Galaxy S6,” said Korean fashion designer HEICH ES HEICH. “For the Galaxy S6, they really thought outside the box. Its deep and profound color makes normal smartphone cases obsolete. The Galaxy S6 is just an accessory in and of itself,” said a designer from Korean fashion brand pushBUTTON.

The fashion media were excited and impressed to see the world’s first dual curved edge screen in an array of luxurious jewel-toned colors.

On the same day, Samsung held another fashion event in Dubai at the Armani Hotel. More than 200 fashion influencers and media attended the fashion show and enjoyed a hands-on experience with the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

Samsung held its final fashion event in Moscow, with a goal of capturing the attention of fashion influencers in the region. More than 100 media and fashion influencers were invited to the Gostiny Dvor during the Moscow Fashion Week on March 25, 2015.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were presented on the runway similar to the events in Paris, Seoul and Dubai.

“The new design of Samsung is something that can really become a fashion trend for it-girls,” said Natalia Bnatova, deputy chief editor of Cosmopolitan Russia. “On this subject I guess we will be interested in supporting Samsung – it’s just too beautiful.”

Karina Erizan, of InStyle Russia, said, “Samsung showed an event of just super level – I never thought that shows like that could be made in Russia. Celebrities, beautiful event to collaborate with (MFW), and magnificent product.”

Russian actress Alisa Grebenshikova said, “I’m very impressed by this new smartphone. It’s beautiful, stylish and bright. It’s so nice on the touch! After using it, I feel like I don’t want to give it back!”

The finale of the fashion show was a collaboration with top designer Valentin Yudaskin. Models walked down the runway while taking selfies with the Galaxy S6 edge.

Straight from Barcelona to Paris, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge Hit the Runway

When choosing a product, functionality is not the only important aspect in the decision. Aesthetics are just as important as functionality. Sometimes it is even the predominant factor. When a product, however, is able to seamlessly combine functionality with form by blending materials, craftsmanship and performance,  it transcends past all other products in its category.

Pens for example, ultimately accomplish the same purpose; conveying one’s thoughts tangibly onto paper. Yet, a pen can range from being plastic and disposable, to an artfully elegant writing instrument that would make any notable scholar fill with envy. In the end, they both have the same function, yet their aesthetics are greatly varied.

The same principles can be applied to smartphones. There’s something special about unboxing a premium smartphone, holding it in your hands for the first time, and admiring that perfect balance of texture, weight and functionality.

It’s clearly the desire to achieve this premium feel, which underpins Samsung’s two new flagship phones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge – and the company has clearly succeeded.

“Until now, we were focused on delivering everything we could offer but this time, we returned to the very beginning to capture the essence of what Samsung wanted to extend to its consumers,” said Lee Min-Hyouk, Vice President of the design team of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division.

The result – the Samsung Galaxy S6 – is a phone that is the very embodiment of design perfection. It’s sleek, slim and stylish. It ticks all the boxes with regards to being eye-catching and iconic. Plus its hardware delivers the high-end performance that people have come to expect from Samsung.

Arriving at this point, although challenging, is a clear indication of Samsung’s determination to create the best products possible for consumers. Project designers started with a blank canvas, and examined every element and aspect that was needed to accomplish this task. The end result was the stunning and beautiful Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

Samsung’s design journey to the Galaxy S6 started with metal. It’s now the primary choice for high-end smartphone makers around the world, simply because it feels solid and premium. But building a metal phone wasn’t a decision that Samsung wanted to rush into. Metals don’t usually go well with mobile phones, because sometimes they block cell phone signals and feel cold when grasped. Durability can also be an issue, as many scratched or bent smartphones show – even when it comes to the latest best-selling models.

Samsung’s answer was to choose a material – 6013 aluminum – that’s usually found in aircraft fuselages, mountain bikes or yachts. The Galaxy S6 is the first smartphone made from this extremely hardwearing metal. Its strength is some 50 percent higher and its durability about 20 percent better than 6063 aluminum, the material used by other smartphone makers.

Glass Enhanced Design

Then there’s the glass. Gorilla Glass 4 – the toughest out there – was used to enhance the sleek and premium look. This mix of metal texture and deep-color glass, once considered an improbable combination, has resulted in a truly unique and fascinating blend in the Galaxy S6.

This purpose of this combination is not only aesthetics, but also for better performance. It enables people to feel more stable when held. Moreover, this combination solved a cell phone signal blockage issue.

Metal can also be more sharply processed compared to the glass. The perimeter edges are slightly higher than the glass surface, allowing the metal edges to be the first point of contact if the device is dropped to the ground; a true example of “design with purpose.”

The glass body of the Samsung Galaxy S6 is intriguing thanks to the materials it uses, and how it is put together. The secret behind the luscious glass panel is a new method of Color, Material and Finish (CMF). The UV-molding technique, which is generally reserved for high-definition TVs, was introduced for the S6’s nano-thin multi-coating process. Samsung layered micro patterns inside the glass, and coated it with several layers of nano-thin material.

A closer look reveals how the back panel reflects the light in breathtaking fashion – almost like a diamond carved by an artisan. The back of the device also presents a variety of mesmerizing colors that change their hue depending on the lights and how it meets the devices.

Five colors were chosen for the new Galaxy lineups – black sapphire, white pearl, gold platinum, green emerald, and blue topaz – according to Samsung’s color trend research. These extraordinary color options make the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge really stand out. Together with the unusual texture of the phone’s back, the result is a striking look and feel.

For the glass, meanwhile, state-of-the-art processing technologies were used for the glass panel finish. The 2.5D glass production process gives the Gorilla Glass the optimal curvature and results in a comfortable, seamless grip. The 2.5D glass embraces both the front and back of the Galaxy S6, and the back of the S6 edge.

Unique screen

The Galaxy S6 edge gets its distinctive look from the perfectly formed, curved front panel; however, that also means that it is very difficult to manufacture. Samsung had to work hard to find the optimal curvature, and then discover a 3D manufacturing process that allows it to happen. It requires thermo-forming at 800-degree Celsius and some intricate post-processing to create the Galaxy S6 edge. The result is the world’s first dual-curved-edge smartphone.

The sides of the Galaxy S6, in turn, boast a flawless metal cut that combines good design and practicality. Samsung’s developers say that they wanted to create a curve which resembles the surface of water sloping on glass. Its curved sides tone down the sharp look of the metal. This curve flawlessly meets the flat-cut metal on the side. It’s a combination that gives the Galaxy S6 an amazingly premium feel in your hand, not least as the buttons are perfectly positioned too.

Finally, the concept of ‘Beauty Meets Purpose’ was born. Galaxy S6 and S6 edge deliver a balanced design with identity. So can a smartphone combine form and function in a way that exudes premium and craftsmanship? On April 10, consumers will have the chance to judge for themselves.

Samsung Electronics announced that Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge received eco-friendly certificates from four major markets, the US, the UK, Russia and Brazil, respectively. Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge have been recognized not just for the performance based on the state-of-the-art technology, but also for the aspects that care environment.

The two flagship smartphones received Sustainability Product Certification (SPC) from the US-based safety testing and certification organization, UL (Underwriters Laboratories). In the UK, world-renowned Carbon Trust honored the two smartphones with CO2 Measured Label.

In particular, Samsung gained Platinum certification, the highest grade, from UL by meeting a series of rigorous criteria -on toxic material, energy efficiency, recyclability of product and packaging, as well as the manufacturer’s social responsibility practices.

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have also been awarded Vitality Leaf certification from the Ecological Union, Russia’s leading environmental certification organization, and COLIBRI, a Brazilian environmental quality label, from Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT).

Packages of the two smartphones are made with 100 percent recycled paper as well as they satisfy criteria on toxic material. In addition, at the very early stage of the product development, Samsung considered environmental impacts. For example, 20 percent of the plastic in battery charger is made from recycled plastic, and soy ink is used to print the letters on the packages and manuals, instead of using petroleum solvents.

Samsung also continuously strives to create an eco-friendly system by applying advanced technology for energy efficiency, including fast charging and Ultra Power Saving mode.

Samsung has set up “Eco-Design process” since 2004 and requires environmental validation at the product development stage. Every product developed in Samsung has to be validated and named eco-grade.

As a result, as of March this year, 3,131 of Samsung products obtained environmental labels from environmental organizations in 14 countries, being recognized as a world’s leading eco-friendly manufacturer.

All phone apps are green, all video apps are purple, and all apps related to contacts are orange.

The Galaxy S6 edge takes visual color coding further, allowing users to assign colors to five favorite contacts. The edge glows the assigned color when contacts call or message, so users can decide quickly if they want to be interrupted. This new function, called People Edge, also lets you quickly swipe your favorite contacts to text or call in 2 easy steps. And by swiping the edge back and forth, you can activate the information ticker to see weather, notifications, and news.
