Samsung Newsroom sat down with Jingyu Hwang from the New Computing (NC) Mechanical R&D Group and Wooseok Ko from the Display Group at Samsung Electronics to learn more about the creation behind the Galaxy Tab S9 series and discuss how the device came to be.

A Tablet Built To Take on the Elements

The Galaxy Tab S9 series is equipped with water- and dust-resistant capabilities — the first among the Galaxy Tab S series. When developing the tablet, Samsung aimed to create a durable product that offers the same peak performance as its other devices. “Previous tablets that had water or dust resistance emphasized the physical durability of the product and focused less on the device’s other specifications,” said Jingyu Hwang, who was responsible for the mechanical structure, parts design and engineering of the Galaxy Tab S9 series. “The Galaxy Tab S9 series boasts high performance and a large screen, so users can freely enjoy their tablet anytime, anywhere.”

The Galaxy Tab S9 series has earned a IP68-rating certification across all models — a standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).² The IP68 rating is granted to devices that earned a dust-resistant rating of 6 for protection against external solid particles and a water-resistant rating of 8 to last up to 30 minutes in a maximum depth of 1.5 meters. With this rating, users can worry less about taking their tablets into damp places, such as next to the kitchen sink while cooking or outside while camping.

As thinner and lighter tablets become the industry standard, keeping the Galaxy Tab S9 series’ design slim while making it resistant to water and dust was difficult. “When incorporating water- and dust-resistant features, making some parts bigger or adding new parts was inevitable. We had to utilize a variety of new technologies when developing the Galaxy Tab S9 series, including designing a new internal structure to seamlessly house all the necessary water-resistant elements within the body. We also developed numerous new parts for it,” explained Hwang.

When making the water-resistant microphone, Samsung used highly adhesive materials that can withstand water pressure as well as a membrane³ material that is permeable to air but not water. The company also applied a silicon rubber material to seal the speaker and utilized a dispensing method, in which a urethane-based material is applied to parts and then solidified, for the USB port. Through the utmost attention to detail, the Galaxy Tab S9 series came to life.

Crystal Clear Viewing With Enhanced Display Technologies

In addition to its water- and dust-resistant capabilities, the Galaxy Tab S9 series features lifelike image quality on a wide display. The Galaxy Tab S9 series comes with a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, previously available only on Galaxy flagship smartphones and laptops, and delivers next-level viewing experiences in the palm of one’s hand.

“As consumers use tablets to view photos, watch high-definition videos and play games, we focused on enhancing the image quality of the tablet,” said Wooseok Ko, who was responsible for developing the display of the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

Aside from the brilliant picture quality offered on the Galaxy Tab S9 series, the unique Vision Booster technology helps users see their screen in any environment.

“You’ve probably experienced not being able to see your device’s screen clearly outside when the sunlight is really strong,” said Ko. “Vision Booster technology can help you to see the screen clearly, even under the harshest sunlight.”

Vision Booster technology automatically adjusts the screen brightness and clarity based on external lighting conditions. To ensure all content is optimally visible, Vision Booster technology enhances the visibility of both the bright and dark areas on screen.

“Even in situations when on-screen graphics are constantly changing — such as when playing a game or watching a movie — Vision Booster technology’s advanced algorithm references the previous frames and quickly applies the same effect using specific computations,” stated Ko.

Meticulous Testing for a Quality Tablet

For a perfect user experience, the Galaxy Tab S9 series went through countless tests during development.

The company went through multiple stages of meticulous verification to achieve the IP68-rated water- and dust-resistant certification from the IEC. The Galaxy Tab S9 series’ water resistance was tested during different product development stages, including manufacturing, by multiple departments, such as the reliability and quality engineering department and the product verification department.

“Since we didn’t have appropriate water-resistant testing equipment for the large 14.6-inch screen of the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, we worked with relevant departments to manufacture new equipment to test the product,” said Hwang.

Additionally, applying Vision Booster technology to a tablet for the first time came with its own set of challenges. “The most difficult part about integrating Vision Booster technology into the Galaxy Tab S9 series was ensuring that it responded appropriately and accurately to lighting changes,” said Ko. Optimizing Vision Booster for the Galaxy Tab S9 series required him and his team to verify the feature responded not only to drastic changes in light, such as going from indoors to outdoors, but to more subtle fluctuations as well.

“To provide users with the best display, we tested image quality and visibility under various conditions and held subsequent evaluation meetings,” said Ko. “Testing the tablet outside was crucial since the test lab environment and actual outdoor conditions can be different.”

The Future of Tablets Led by the Galaxy Tab S9

Galaxy Tab S9 series has redefined the standard for premium tablets, equipped with advanced features that differentiate it from previous generations. The developers shared their final thoughts on creating the device and their hopes for users.

At this year’s Galaxy Unpacked held at COEX in Seoul on July 26, Samsung Electronics unveiled a new product lineup that signaled the next era of innovation — from the upgraded Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 to the Galaxy Watch6 series and Galaxy Tab S9 series.

Encouraging users to join the flip side and explore the possibilities of Galaxy, Samsung opened a Galaxy Studio in the Seongsu neighborhood of Seoul on July 28. This year’s Galaxy Studio enables visitors to explore the latest devices through Flip Side Market, “a lifestyle market that showcases mobile experiences unique to Galaxy.” Samsung Newsroom traveled to the Seongsu Galaxy Studio to experience the Flip Side Market locations firsthand.

Flip Side Market Seongsu is situated in three different spaces around Seongsu, each distinctly themed. Visitors begin their journey at Flip Side Market The Garden with the Innovation Monument of Galaxy foldables. Then, they can explore the new Galaxy products across the street at Flip Side Market Seongsu, the main experience hub resembling a marketplace.

Notably, Flip Side Market The Garden and Flip Side Market Seongsu will carry the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 for guests to try out. The last stop is Flip Side Market DOOR to Seongsu, where guests can purchase special dessert merchandise in collaboration with Korean convenience store brand GS25.

Upon entering the first floor of Flip Side Market Seongsu, visitors are welcomed by a large wall that utilizes the Galaxy Z Flip5. The display showcases the larger 3.4-inch Flex Window on the Galaxy Z Flip5, creating a colorful attraction with each unique screen.

“The wall demonstrates the enhanced usability of Galaxy Z Flip5’s Flex Window,” said a tech influencer from Thailand. “I can use more apps on a larger Cover Screen and customize the screen with more choices.”

On first and second floor of The Unique Side, visitors can decorate their Galaxy Z Flip5 with the all-new NFC-based Flipsuit Card. Seongsu Galaxy Studio invites visitors to explore the connected Galaxy ecosystem and discover a mobile experience made just for them. The three Flip Side Market locations will be open until August 20, 2023.

Visitors at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 could experience Samsung’s latest products inside a space decorated like a “hanok,” or traditional Korean-style house.

The Experience Zone was masterfully crafted by Kyung-sun Chae, art director of the global hit series “Squid Game.” Samsung Newsroom met with Chae to learn about the creation behind the one-of-a-kind Experience Zone at Galaxy Unpacked 2023.

Q. How do you feel being the director overseeing the Experience Zone at the first Galaxy Unpacked held in Seoul?

I’m proud that I got to showcase various features of the latest Galaxy devices and highlight Seoul’s charm to countless people through Galaxy Unpacked. My favorite part of this experience was developing the initial concepts for the Experience Zone. Through this event, I now have a new desire to introduce Korean culture and spaces to a wider audience using Galaxy technology.

Q. What are some differences between the Experience Zone you created for Galaxy Unpacked and production designs you’ve created in the past?

Production design is about visualizing text in video — it’s all about expressing the textual themes and distinct attributes of the characters in a visually effective manner.

For Galaxy Unpacked, I had to take a different approach from directing a production since actual visitors would be attending and experiencing the space in person. Because it’s the first time that new Galaxy devices are being unveiled in South Korea, I focused on presenting the modern aesthetics of Galaxy and accentuating the true beauty of Seoul, the city where tradition and technology coexist.

Q. What is the concept of the Experience Zone at Galaxy Unpacked 2023?

To me, it was meaningful that the event was hosted in Seoul. I wanted to create a harmonious space that displayed a fresh perspective of the city alongside the new Galaxy devices. This is how I decided on the concept of the Experience Zone — preserving existing perspectives, unfolding folded perspectives and sharing new perspectives.

To convey this, I actively utilized hanok, an architecture unique to Korea. As the traditional structure of hanok shares some similarities with the foldable structure of the Galaxy Z Flip5, I presented the experience of seeing one’s perspective expand or unfold by leaning on the structure of the hanok. I included themes of “openness” and “infinite expansion” from the world of Galaxy to complete the experience.

In addition, I applied Korean traditional landscape architecture, “chagyeong,” which means to lend scenery. In hanok, a window is like a frame that holds nature. Chagyeong allows you to fully appreciate nature and enjoy the expanded space through the frame, even from within the hanok. I implemented this design principle while designing and directing the Experience Zone.

I developed each Galaxy product booth using “changho,” the Korean traditional door of a hanok, and positioned them to form the shape of a lotus flower. Behind the traditional Korean door, the night view and futuristic landscape of Seoul are visible. Visitors can appreciate the new Galaxy products in a different light, as the products merge with the Seoul backdrop.

Lastly, I placed traditional elements throughout the entire Experience Zone. I recreated what Seoul looked like in the past by using the traditional walls and structure of hanok as well as other historical items such as “soban,” a small tray-like table. I designed the wall with glass material to mirror the vision behind Galaxy, which seeks to preserve existing values while continuing to evolve and innovate.

I hope the visitors will enjoy both the Seoul skyline and the new Galaxy products through this unique space.

Q. What inspiration did you get from the new Galaxy products when designing the space?

The Galaxy Z Flip5 has many unique characteristics with its ingenious foldable form factor and sophisticated design. These characteristics resemble Seoul as the city simultaneously embraces both tradition and modernity by combining the familiar with the unfamiliar. In particular, I used the decalcomania method, inspired by the Galaxy Z series, to portray Seoul at both day and night.

I highlighted the contrast between the city’s day and night by using black and white in the background. I also utilized the mint color of the Galaxy devices and Korean traditional patchwork material to create Seoul’s cityscape, which shine brightly at all times of the day. In addition, I expressed shadows by utilizing Galaxy products. The structure that was made with the folding screen as the motif, in which visitors can draw the shadows to express their uniqueness, was inspired by Galaxy foldable.

Q. You have been the art director of various historical TV dramas that capture the different aesthetics of Seoul. Did that influence the design process when creating the Experience Zone for Galaxy Unpacked?

Throughout the ideation and creation process for Galaxy Unpacked, I aspired to create a space that gave visitors a chance to enjoy traditional Korean hanok as well as Galaxy products. I hope that everyone who visits the Experience Zone will have a memorable experience at the very first Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul.

Availability

Galaxy Tab S9 series are available for pre-order in select markets from July 26, with general availability starting August 11.

The series comes in two colors, Beige and Graphite,²³ and three sizes: 14.6-inch on Tab S9 Ultra, 12.4-inch on Tab S9+ and 11-inch on Tab S9.²⁴

The premium experience is protected and supported by four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and by five years of security updates. Samsung Care+,²⁵ a support service for accidental damages, offers special discounts and free benefits during pre-order periods.
