To help users understand more about the foldable technology from an engineering perspective, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President, Head of Flagship Product R&D Team and Technology Strategy Team at Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics.

As a leader of Samsung’s flagship product R&D team, the Q&A below includes some of the latest breakthroughs and exclusive insights on the fourth-generation of Galaxy Z series.

Q: What is your approach to improving the hardware design of Samsung’s lineup of foldables?

Not only have we accumulated engineering knowledge from the three previous generations of foldables, but we’ve also received customer feedback along the way that has been extremely valuable to advancing the Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. When we address customer feedback, most of the time, we must overcome technological limitations, which require new approaches when compared to conventional bar-type smartphones. To bring foldable technology to millions and make the foldable device category mainstream, we focused on the following areas: enhancing durability for everyday use, providing perfect balance of on-the-go experiences and optimized large-screen experiences and maintaining the ultimate performance which is the fundamental of the Galaxy smartphones.

Q: How does the updated hinge in Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 make everyday use more comfortable for users?

For Z Flip, our users wanted the form factor to be even more compact. For Z Fold, our users liked to leverage both the Main Display and Cover Screen and accomplish tasks one-handed.

So, our solution was to redesign the hinge on both devices. Our previous Hinge design was an engineering feat and enabled the foldable experience we see today. However, we knew internally that we would need to simplify the design to manufacture it at an even greater scale and meet the needs of the mainstream users.

By creating this new hinge, we could further slim down the Z Flip4 design to make it even more compact. It also allowed us to modify the dimensions on Z Fold4. Now, the device has a slightly wider and slightly shorter Cover Screen, enabling a more comfortable experience while typing on the go and doing other tasks on the Cover Screen. While these under-the-hood changes may feel incremental, they go a long way in the consumer experience.

Beyond offering users comfortable use, redesigning the hinge also brings benefits to both manufacturing and longevity. We reduced the number of components by 60%. This is a feat in itself because this means that fewer components could potentially need repair, and it’s easier to manufacture at a larger scale.

Q: Z Flip and Z Fold users love creating content with high-quality cameras. Do the latest devices offer users any new experiences or features?

We took care to upgrade the cameras in both devices. We wanted to give our consumers the advantages of Nightography, first introduced on S22, on both Z Flip and Z Fold. However, this required adding larger camera lenses to bring in more light. By redesigning the hinge, we were able to secure more space for the component that could fit our new camera systems without making the device thicker.

Q: How has the fourth generation Z series been made lighter? How will this benefit the end user?

Over the past several generations, we have been focused on shaving down the weight of Z Fold series. We know this is a critically important factor to get right on foldables because the value proposition of these devices is to offer new experiences without compromise.

This year, we focused on reducing the weight of the display and hinge, resulting in a device that weighs 263 grams, which is 8 grams lighter than Z Fold3 and nearly 20 grams lighter than Z Fold2 (282g). This subtle yet continuous refinement makes a big difference over generations.

To accomplish this, we restructured and optimized number of internal components including display and hinge. Reducing the display weight contributed much to overall weight. We redesigned the structure and materials of the layers and by doing so, the display of Z Fold4 is not only 15% lighter than the previous generation but also 45% stronger. Combined with the redesigned hinge, which is 21% lighter than the one used on Z Fold3, Z Fold4 offers a noticeable difference in weight. This results in a more comfortable, portable and convenient user experience.

Q: Samsung has received feedback in the past regarding Z Flip’s battery life. How has the battery life been extended in the Z Flip4?

One of the biggest pieces of feedback we received from Z Flip3 was about its battery life. Since a foldable smartphone is divided into two parts and joined together with a hinge, naturally, it has limitations to its internal space when compared to conventional bar-type smartphones. However, by making the hinge slim and reconfiguring internal mechanical design, it allowed us to secure extra space for bigger battery. Together with more efficient performance, users are now able to enjoy longer battery life compared to previous generation.

Q: Galaxy users care about having an immersive viewing experience on their devices. How and why has the Under Display Camera (UDC) on Z Fold been improved in this latest iteration?

We created the UDC technology to provide an uninterrupted viewing experience on the 7.6-inch Main Display. This was the first of its kind on a foldable, and with Z Fold4, we were able to make the experience even better.

We reconfigured the pixels on top of the camera to improve the perceived resolution and thus make the camera even more unnoticeable. We changed the sub-pixel arrangement from a cluster-type to a scatter-type, increasing grid pattern visibility and improving the readability of texts. As a result, watching content, playing games and reading are uninterrupted on the Main Display.

Q: The key element to Samsung’s foldables is Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). Can you tell us more about how you created this durable material that can be folded hundreds of thousands of times?

When we developed the first generation of the Galaxy Fold, we made the foldable screens using flexible polyimide. But we knew we would need to make something more durable to make foldables mainstream.

This is how the first Ultra Thin Glass was created. It is a highly complex material that has to come through countless steps from the raw material. We first receive sheets of thin glass, which are thinner than a single human hair, from our partners before they are coated and cut to precise dimensions. Then, we undergo a delicate process of smoothing and polishing the glass surface. This ensures the material is structurally sound and ready for installation. Finally, they are given a strenuous durability test before being added to a Z series device.

Each step has been refined every year to get us where we are today, producing millions of components for our devices durable enough to give our users peace of mind in their everyday usage.

To help users understand more about the journey of foldable UX design evolution, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Yoojin Hong, Executive Vice President and Head of User Experience, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. As a leader in the global UX design of Samsung mobile products, the Q&A below includes exclusive insights on all things flippable and foldable.

Q: What inspired the creation of Samsung’s lineup of foldables? How has the device enabled new experiences for users?

As smartphones became an essential companion in our daily lives, users began to demand larger screens, and the race was on to deliver just that. At the same time, users wanted pocket-sized and portable devices — two seemingly opposing asks. So this posed the question, how could we reconcile these demands while solving the problem? Samsung’s solution was simple, though not easy: fold the screen.

While this was a huge undertaking in itself, developing folding screen technology was only the beginning. Once we had these new form factors, we realized that designing UX for a foldable was different from a traditional smartphone. We had to rethink the smartphone experience entirely. We also discovered, over time, that these new form factors had the potential to change people’s relationships with their phones. Changes in form factor also lead to new life patterns, and not just for advanced users, but for everyday users. Foldables met evolving user needs in surprising ways.

Q: What is Samsung’s UX design philosophy for foldable?

When creating a user experience on a phone, most companies only need to account for a single static screen. But foldables are moving devices with two screens, so the UX must be more fluid. This has been the basis of our entire design philosophy since the beginning.

Our design philosophy for foldables revolves around two foundations. First, UX design that is new yet familiar. Foldables offer consumers a new form factor, which delivers a variety of different and innovative benefits. However, while the user experience is new, it shouldn’t be unfamiliar — there should not be a steep learning curve. For foldables, we design with the idea that the UI should be almost invisible. It should be so intuitive that users are instantly familiar and can navigate with ease.

The second foundation is to remember that foldables are tools that help users create. Smartphones have evolved from literal phones to devices that can unlock creativity through photography, art, gaming and more. We want to ensure our UX enhances these experiences.

Since that first Galaxy Fold, we’ve launched a new generation of foldable phones every year. These phones have evolved in so many unexpected ways — some of which were planned from the beginning, while others were guided by our learnings over time in addition to the invaluable feedback from our users.

Q: What are the differences in the user base between Z Flip series and Z Fold series?

Z Flip series and Z Fold series are both foldables, but they have very different form factors with distinct user bases. Z Flip users see their devices as a form of self-expression and enjoy the versatility and personalization the form factor provides. Z Fold users gravitate to the large-screen experience with the ability to do and see more at once. They love getting things done quickly and then having more time to focus on what’s more important to them.

These separate user bases also gave distinct feedback on the previous generations, which led to our focus areas for Z Flip4 and Z Fold4. For Z Flip, we wanted to give even more ways for users to express themselves and personalize their experiences. For Z Fold, we wanted to enhance large-screen interactions, specifically around multitasking.

What’s important to remember, however, is that these new devices are not just for advanced smartphone users — they’re for everyone.

Q: How have the UI and customization features been improved for the latest Z Flip4?

With Z Flip4, users can personalize the entire look of their device, from the hardware color, accessories, Main Screen UI — and now Cover Screen UI. Customization goes beyond simply decorating a phone’s UX — it also includes customizing the user experience. The Z Flip4 offers a new level of Cover Screen functionality, where users can not only customize the Cover Screen design but also take advantage of a variety of useful widgets and other functions.

We also noticed that Z Flip users were taking advantage of the unique photo-capturing experiences offered by the form factor. So, on Z Flip4, we continued to provide features that promoted self-expression and enhanced the UI of the camera to open up new possibilities for the FlexCam.

Q: How is UI improved users boost their productivity and save time with the new Z Fold 4?

We’ve improved interactions and eliminated steps in activating settings and redesigned menus and layouts to bring action buttons closer together. This is important on a large screen as it reduces the amount of finger “reaching required” for the most common inputs.

We also wanted to simplify the large-screen experience by enabling faster app switching and activation. To accomplish this, we’ve added Taskbar, a familiar app bar that can always be activated, no matter what app you’re using.

Finally, we’re also giving more flexibility in how multiple apps can be viewed on the screen with finger gestures that enable a split window or pop-up window. One-finger swiping at a corner makes the currently used app shown on a pop-up window. Two-finger swiping on the right, left or bottom makes the currently used app split in half. This allows you to be more productive, so you can achieve more in your daily life.

Q: How have Samsung’s collaborations set the foundation for the entire foldables market?

We have worked with Google to create this ecosystem together from the beginning, often inspiring each other to develop new features or technologies. From the beginning, we worked closely with Google to fulfill our foldable vision, even collaborating at the code level to modify Android to meet the needs of foldable devices. We knew we would need to enhance Android to run effectively on new screen dimensions, and this work served as step one of our foldables journey long before any hardware was announced.

And, of course, we continue to work with our biggest partners, including Google, Meta and Microsoft, to bring optimized experiences on foldables to life. Now, apps like Chrome, Gmail and Microsoft’s full Office suites and Outlook take advantage of the Z Fold series’ large screen for the ultimate multitasking experience. Thanks to our partnership with Meta, FlexCam is optimized for the most popular social platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

I believe it is extremely important to both build a Foldable ecosystem to diversify user experiences and continue to expand the app ecosystem through an open collaboration philosophy.

Q: User behavior — and thus, user experience — is constantly evolving. How would you summarize your approach to keeping up with new consumer demands?

In our previous devices, we approached our UX design by starting with what was necessary and tackling the challenges. Then, we developed new technologies to provide more screen space while keeping the devices compact. The new designs didn’t just solve existing problems; they also transformed user behavior, changing the way people take photos, interact with their phones and more. These new behaviors have become natural parts of the everyday lives of the people who use foldable phones.

They also, of course, create all new challenges — and that’s what drives us forward as UX designers. Users imagine new possibilities, and those possibilities become demands. It’s our responsibility to create the innovations to meet them. As the cycle of innovation continues, we’re excited to get to work building the foundation for what’s next.

This universe is called Samsung Space Tycoon, an experimental virtual space that Samsung recently launched on the popular metaverse platform, Roblox. Space Tycoon is a virtual space where users can build and customize real Samsung products themselves in the metaverse.

The idea for the space came from the joke “Samsung must’ve hired an alien,” a joke that people make whenever Samsung launches an innovative product. The designers imagined a world where ‘Samsung’s aliens’ would create a universe that they would also live in. This world would be an advanced environment with an abundance of resources, somewhere in the bright future that would allow aliens to research and create new products. In Space Tycoon, young consumers, including Generation (Gen) Z, can naturally interact with the Samsung brand and enjoy more personalized experiences inside the metaverse.

In order to learn the full story behind the development of this virtual space on Roblox, Samsung Newsroom met with Soojung Lee, Jaeik Lee, Yeonee Choi and Doeun Shin, the designers on Samsung’s Corporate Design Center who led the Space Tycoon Project.

From Making Home Appliances to Decorating Your Lab With Aliens: How To Experience Samsung in Space Tycoon

When entering Space Tycoon, the game begins with a story task asking the user to create a virtual product with Samsung’s aliens. Users can extract minerals in order to make and manufacture Samsung products in the Lab. With the products they have made, users can collect coins, which can be used to purchase smartphones, vacuum cleaners and other products. In addition, users can buy a variety of avatar items to customize their characters, and there are various events and entertainment available in the space as well.

“We began this project with the hope that the younger generations all over the world would become closer to Samsung,” said Soojung Lee, the designer who directed this project.

“We wanted to create a familiarity with Samsung by letting young people become more accustomed to the brand and more importantly, have fun and experience the brand,” Lee continued. “We were looking for a platform where users get to directly experience things, rather than simply a space where we can promote our products. We’ve come to the conclusion that the metaverse platform called Roblox, which boasts the most global users, was the most appropriate.”

The reason Space Tycoon was made as a management simulation game is because the focus of the game is the user experience. “Rather than having a brand simply provide passive experiences, we wanted to provide a more active experience where consumers get to make the products themselves in the metaverse and go beyond experiences in reality. To accomplish that, this genre was the best for Space Tycoon,” explained Choi, who designed the UI and game scenarios.

Smartphones as Scooters and Vacuum Cleaners as Hoverboards: Imagination Becomes Reality in Samsung’s Space Tycoon

Aside from simply building Samsung products in the game, these virtual, customizable products can be used for purposes that differ from their intended use, providing a unique brand experience to users.

When explaining the background on how Samsung products are to be used in game, designer Shin emphasized the importance of providing a fun experience for younger users. “We prioritized Gen Z having fun while interacting with the Samsung brand and products by utilizing the features of the metaverse, rather than providing dull, technical information about product performance, such as battery capacity and camera resolution,” said Shin, who designed the visual interaction and visual concept graphical user interface (GUI) for Space Tycoon.

In Space Tycoon, Samsung’s foldable Galaxy Z Flip smartphone can be a scooter or a bag, The Sero TV becomes a single person helicopter and the Jet Bot robot vacuum cleaner becomes a hoverboard. “Using our imagination, we intentionally excluded the real-life special features of Samsung’s products and gave them new functions so that these products are used in completely different ways in the metaverse,” said Jaeik Lee. “We thought that this new, creative approach would help Gen Z think of Samsung as a friendly and innovative lifestyle brand, rather than simply viewing Samsung as a smartphone and home appliances company,” added Lee.

Unique Experiences Presented by the Universe in a Fantastic Array of Colors

The environment of Space Tycoon is an advanced place in the bright future that is unique and abundant with resources, enabling aliens to research new products. Unlike the vast and silent image of space that is often thought of, the cheerful colors of Space Tycoon catch users’ attention. In order to craft an eye-catching environment in this virtual space, the designers needed to meticulously think through the details to create the concept of this new world.

“Rather than using a dark, serious image of space, we wanted to create a mysterious place that is both bright and cheerful,” said Shin. “At the same time, we wanted to show a more advanced future when working on the design concept, so we referred to sci-fi pictures drawn by young kids. We were inspired by the concept of Atompunk as well, which showed how people in the 1960s envisioned the future. It’s a utopian place filled with big buildings, colorful spaceships, and it lives in harmony with beautiful nature. This concept is unrealistic yet full of elements that spark imagination.”

“The first goal was to make users feel that this is a different planet from Earth, and then we focused on designing a fantastical environment that catches users’ attention,” said Jaeik Lee.

On Space Tycoon, the environment is filled with colors that are not naturally seen on Earth. Designer Jaeik Lee said he meticulously designed the virtual space and setting. “We kept familiar elements, such as ponds, plants and rocks, to let users know that these are indeed elements of nature, but we also tried to create an unfamiliar vibe as well by adding a touch of artificiality in texture and color,” said Lee. “For instance, we made the desert pink instead of a sandy color and made the forest more of a jade color. We also created metal cactuses as well as mushrooms and plants that emit neon lights.”

Within Space Tycoon, there are fun and unique elements as well. “When the aliens accidently landed on Earth, they fell in love with lemonade, so they took it with them on their way back home to space,” said Choi about the storyline of Space Tycoon. “You can find features that display the aliens’ love for lemonade within the world of Space Tycoon,” she added. Designer Jaeik Lee also offered a useful tip regarding the lemonade. “You can make Samsung products with the aliens,” said Lee. “Don’t forget to stop by the lemonade zone to win their hearts.”

Samsung’s Space Tycoon Will Serve as a Playground for Future Generations

Once Gen Z experiences Samsung in Space Tycoon, Samsung has future plans to continue connecting with users through the metaverse.

Shortly after the launch of Space Tycoon, many users flocked to the virtual space. “Just a few days after the launch of the service, the number of visits surpassed 5.9 million,” said Soojung Lee. “Roblox users on average play for about 5 minutes, but already there were heavy users that were on the game for more than 3 hours.” Designer Lee also explained Samsung’s plans to expand in-game content going forward. “Currently, about 20 Samsung products are available as in-game items, and these products are presented in various colors and designs,” said Lee. “We plan to continue expanding in-game content so that users can enjoy Space Tycoon for longer.”

“When we conducted a user survey during the course of development, one child from the U.S. commented that he experienced a new world through Space Tycoon,” said Choi. “It was very touching and exciting to hear that, and it made me feel a stronger sense of duty. Also, Space Tycoon is being advertised on a billboards in the Time Square in the U.S. and in Piccadilly Circus in the U.K., so we are proud that the design we’ve developed is out on the world’s stage. We’d like to continue making various content in Korea and collaborating to create pleasant experiences for users,” she added.

Space Tycoon is Samsung’s virtual reality universe that creates user-centered, new brand experiences by focusing on the preferences and lifestyles of future consumers. Through this universe, Samsung will continue to offer more innovative experiences that capture both the eyes and the hearts of users.

Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of Samsung Space Tycoon (“Space Tycoon”), a virtual playground built inside the global metaverse platform Roblox. Space Tycoon is a virtual space where users can create and play games and share experiences using Samsung Electronics’ products together with alien characters in space, taking design and functionality cues from business simulation ‘tycoon’ genre.

Samsung has created this service targeting Gen Z customers to provide them with an integrated, metaverse experience where they can create and enjoy their very own Samsung products. Samsung’s aim is to enable Gen Z customers to experience the brand and interact with one another.

“Space Tycoon is designed to be a playground where many customers can experience unlimited possibilities of virtual spaces,” said Jinsoo Kim, Executive Vice President at Corporate Design Center in Samsung Electronics. “We wanted to give our Gen Z customers a chance to experience Samsung products in a way they have never done before. We will continue to showcase content that can deliver more meaningful and entertaining digital experiences for both our current and future customers.”

Set in the Samsung Space Station as well as the research laboratory where alien characters conduct research on Samsung’s newest products, Space Tycoon consists of three specific play areas: the Mining Zone for resource procurement, the Shop for game item purchase and the Lab for product manufacturing.

In Space Tycoon, using the excavated resources, users can design various Samsung products — from Galaxy-smartphones to various TVs and home appliances — and purchase or upgrade game items. Users can get creative by starting with real-life products and giving them a makeover to become in-game gadgets. For example, the foldable smartphone Galaxy Z Flip can turn into a bag or a scooter, just as users will be more imaginative with the Jet Bot vacuum cleaner turning into a hoverboard or The Sero lifestyle TV into a one-person helicopter.

Currently, over 20 Samsung products are available in the Shop where the colors of their purchased items can change randomly depending on the levels achieved and new series of products will be regularly updated.

Space Tycoon will simultaneously launch in 14 languages, including Korean, English, Chinese and Spanish. Additional features where users can interact with one another, share their creations or attend exclusive virtual parties will be further added in the future. In addition, Samsung will hold dedicated online events through its website Samsung.com under the #YouMake campaign that is focused on coloring and collecting Samsung products.

Now, a decade later, Samsung has shipped 4 times more foldable devices in 2021 than in 2020, exceeding the three-fold market growth that analysts expected.¹

Consumer enthusiasm for Samsung foldables is exemplified by the success of the Galaxy Z series. In the first month since launch, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 exceeded total accumulative sales of Samsung foldable devices in 2020.

Bringing Foldables to Consumers Around the World

Samsung may have first introduced the concept of foldable displays in 2011, but it would take over a decade to bring foldable devices to consumers around the world.

The next major milestone came in 2019, when Samsung finally brought its foldable vision to reality with the Galaxy Fold, its first foldable device. Soon after that came the Galaxy Z Flip. A sleek clamshell design – a throwback to flip phones of yore – made the Galaxy Z Flip an instant icon.

After a decade of progress and three generations of innovation, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 brought enhanced durability and an improved user experience to foldables. Not only have they set a new standard in the industry, but they rekindled consumer interest in smartphones in general.

Innovations Behind the Technology

From creating new materials and methods to overcoming mechanical challenges, creating the foldable category required Samsung to reimagine the smartphone from the inside out.

From the onset, Samsung engineers understood that the key to creating a new category would be inventing a range of new technologies to ensure the devices would meet the expectations of global consumers.

The Infinity Flex Display and Samsung UTG, for example, enabled the world’s first folding glass display. While its screen may be a continuous piece of glass, a foldable’s body features two distinct components. This unique structure meant that in order to maintain a design slim enough for daily use, engineers would have to completely rethink the placement of internal components. That challenge included designing a new internal cooling system as well as a dual-battery system with technology that optimizes multiple power sources as one.

To ensure that the devices would be capable of withstanding hundreds of thousands of folds, a Hideaway Hinge mechanism was designed with Sweeper technology to help keep out dust and dirt particles. A buyer survey conducted by Samsung revealed that a stylish design, portability and an innovative folding form factor were the top drivers behind purchases of the Galaxy Z Flip3. The ability to use the cover screen without opening the device was another important factor for those who value privacy, as well as those who want to regulate their screen time to manage their mental health. Buyers of the Galaxy Z Fold3, meanwhile, reported being drawn to its large screen for viewing content, multitasking capabilities and productivity features, including the S Pen.⁴ At the end of the day, it’s clear that both devices are giving consumers more incentive than ever to switch to a foldable, even if it means changing brands or operating systems.

Samsung Electronics today announced the latest development in its ongoing partnership with streaming giant, Netflix, to herald the release of the second season of its hit-show, Emily in Paris, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios. The Emmy-nominated show, renowned for its 21^st century celebration of iconic Parisian style, has collaborated with Samsung to showcase world-class premium technology to fans of the series.

Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold2 features a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that allows you to check your route with a single glance. If you’d like to switch back to following just one navigation app, simply adjust the Multi-Active Window tray to view the navigation app you prefer with a single tap of the screen. Multi-Active Window ②: Mobile Banking Made Easy

However, bank account numbers are not easy to memorize, meaning that when it comes to making a transfer, we find ourselves switching back and forth between app windows – making what should be a seamless process somewhat inconvenient.

Galaxy Z foldable phone users can get their mobile bank transfers done in no time, as they can divide their smartphone’s screen to view the messenger app with account information on the top half and manage their mobile banking app on the bottom half. In order to allow users to respond to such time-sensitive requests using just their Galaxy Z foldable smartphones, Samsung has developed intuitive document editing functions for easy file editing in any situation.

Drag and Drop is a feature that lets you copy & paste text, charts and images instantly when using compatible apps. For example, say you have divided your screen into three parts using Multi-Active Window to open up Excel, PowerPoint, and Word at the same time. You can easily edit all your files in one go with this feature as you can copy data from Excel and paste it right away into your PowerPoint presentation, or copy an image from PowerPoint and paste it directly into your Word document. Making concrete and organized travel plans is a crucial part of having a relaxing vacation, especially when you’re planning for a spontaneous weekend away or a sudden trip that doesn’t leave you with much time to plan. Getting everything done at once can be overwhelming, so by harnessing Multi-Active Window and Vertical Split Screen Mode of your Galaxy Z foldable phone, you can make your vacation plans and bookings with optimal efficiency. First, split your top screen vertically, and harness the bottom screen to research your vacation ideas while making note of itineraries in one half of your split top screen and searching for real-time pricings of accommodations on the other half.

In order to most effectively enjoy a walkthrough while playing a game, Galaxy Z Fold2 users can harness their smartphone as a handy secondary monitor by using Flex mode and the Cover display. Simply place your device in a convenient location and enjoy stress-free gaming without the hassle of having to set up a secondary monitor or arrange a smartphone within the best field of vision.

Split Screen Capture: For Instant Sharing of Those Must-See Moments

When you are watching a TV show or movie, you are bound to run into a hilarious scene that you just have to share with others. So, what do you do when you want to share these must-see scenes with friends? You have to undergo the cumbersome process of screen capturing, cropping, editing and sharing your screen capture via messaging application, all without missing as little of your favorite show as possible. So as to let you enjoy your favorite content while sharing, the Galaxy Z Fold2 comes with the Split Screen Capture feature.

The Split Screen Capture feature of the Galaxy Z Fold2 allows you to take a separate screenshot of up to three applications on your screen at the same time and then select only the screenshots of the specific application, or applications, of your choice. After capturing the separated screen, you will see the screenshots of the open applications at the bottom of your display. Simply select the screenshot you would like to share and drag and drop that image into your messenger application to seamlessly share the image for uninterrupted media and sharing experiences.

Flex mode ①: For Freestanding Viewing Experiences

Watching a video on your smartphone with the device propped up on a surface without a phone stand, tripod or holder is about never very enjoyable; even when you are resting your phone against an object, it’s far too easy for the phone to slip down, and without a stand or other accessory, it is not always easy to get your phone to stand at the desired angle. However, if you are Galaxy Z foldable device user, you need not worry about such hindrances, and there’s no need to buy any separate accessories. The devices themselves can act as their own stand in order to allow you to watch your favorite content at variety of angles while moving both hands freely.

When you use Flex mode, the screen will automatically divide into two when you fold the phone to make it stand at a certain angle. The unique advantage of Galaxy Z Fold2 is that you can even watch your chosen media directly from the cover display. If you fold your smartphone to stand on its two displays with the hinge pointing up like a tent, you can enjoy watching videos in this other unique and stable format. The Galaxy Z Fold2’s cover display of 6.2-inches, enhanced from the previous Fold’s cover display size of 4.6-inches, matches the size of regular smartphone displays, meaning that your viewing experiences are not compromised when watching content.

Dual Preview: For Photos Taken Your Way

But not everyone’s photography skills are the same – sometimes the picture you take for your friend will be fabulous while the one they take for you could use some work. In order to provide better shooting experiences and protect friendships, Samsung developed the Dual Preview feature, available on the Galaxy Z Fold2.

Dual Preview allows not just the photographer but also the subject on the other side of the camera to look at themselves on the large-sized Cover display of the Galaxy Z Fold2. You can experiment with your facial expression and pose to find the best look, and then even directly take the photo yourself by showing the palm of your hand to the camera. Essentially, even when your friend is holding your phone like a tripod, you can take selfies in the way that suits you best.

Flex mode ②: For More Precise Editing

These days we are always adding filters or other such layers, such as handwritten words and stickers, to our pictures. The Galaxy Z foldable phone lineup is here to help you make these edits more precisely thanks to its Multi-Window function. When you divide the screen into two and open the original image on the top and the photo editing application in the bottom display, you can work on the photos while comparing the two screens real-time.¹ By comparing the edits to the original image, you can ensure that any special effects you add are kept in line with the original photo’s tone. You can also open an image that you’d like to use as a reference on the top screen while editing on the bottom screen for even more editing inspiration.

For further editing ease, you can also harness the AI-powered Object Eraser feature which erases unnecessary objects in your photos. Simply open the original photo on the top screen and use the bottom screen to erase those background or other unnecessary elements in your photos one by one by touching the screen. By comparing the edited version and the original version at once, you can ensure that what remains in your edited photos is what is worth emphasizing.

Auto framing: For Seamless Angle Adjustment with Automatic AI in Group Shots

Taking a group shot to commemorate the moment when hanging out with friends and family is a must. However, someone in the group will always suffer by being caught at the wrong angle, or have to bear the inconvenience of adjusting the camera several times to find the perfect angle as others move around. This is why the Galaxy Z foldable line comes with the dedicated Auto framing feature, which helps you capture videos with all members of your group in frame and at the right angle.

Thanks to AI-powered machine learning capabilities, Auto framing recognizes the body and faces of the subject or subjects in front of the camera and will then track and automatically adjust the angle of view to capture them by zooming in or out, moving the screen, and more. The camera focus will automatically adjust when up to two people move in and out of focus, and once more than three people enter the frame, the camera will zoom out so that as many people as possible can appear in-shot. Simply place your Galaxy Z foldable device at the right angle and you are more than ready to take winning group shots worthy of sharing.

Here are seven useful tips of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Simple Ways to Receive Calls

Your smartphone can ring any time of the day, so why should there only be one way to take a phone call?

With multiple options to receive a call, the Galaxy Z Flip lets you take phone calls comfortably without stopping the task at hand. If the phone rings while you are cooking or multitasking with your hands, simply swipe from left to right on the cover display to receive the call on speaker mode. To end the call, all you need to do is swipe the opposite way on the cover display.

Another way to answer a phone call on the Galaxy Z Flip is by unfolding the device and swiping left to right. This is great for times when you need to take a call together with multiple colleagues in the same room.

If you prefer answering and ending phone calls automatically by folding and unfolding the device, you can change the phone app’s Settings to suit your needs.

Instantly Capture Multiple Photos

Let’s say you are at a birthday party and you want to capture the birthday cake moment. With so many people singing and moving all around you, it’s hard to take the perfect shot with just one photo.

The Galaxy Z Flip’s camera comes with Burst mode, which lets you take a series of photos in the blink of an eye. Simply hold and drag down the shutter button in the Camera app and shoot as the action unfolds. You can then go to the Gallery and pick the perfect shot in your own time.

Turning memorable experiences into instantly shareable GIFs on the Galaxy Z Flip is as easy as taking a photo. In the Camera app’s Settings, you can change the action of swiping down the shutter button to create GIFs.

Use the Cover Display as a Selfie Viewfinder

Spontaneity is one of the ingredients that many great selfies share. With the Galaxy Z Flip, you can be sure to capture amazing individual or group selfies whenever the mood strikes.

When your device is folded, you can simply double tap the fingerprint sensor to turn the cover display into a selfie viewfinder. You can then switch between the wide-angle and Ultra Wide lens by tapping on the display. Once everything is perfectly framed, all you need to do is click the volume button to take the shot.

Launch Multi Window Mode Quickly

Whether you want to quickly pull up a to-do list while running errands or reply to a message while watching a video, the Galaxy Z Flip makes multitasking in daily life simpler.

You can run apps in Multi Window mode on the device by opening them from the Multi-Window Tray, which can be accessed by swiping the right side of the display.

Opening up a pop-up window on the Galaxy Z Flip can give you more flexibility when you multitask. Simply press and drag an icon from the Multi-Window Tray to the center of the display to launch an app as a pop-up window.

Do Everything With One Hand

We’ve all had times when we have struggled to deal with multiple tasks on our phones with just one hand. The Galaxy Z Flip comes with a nifty feature that lets you comfortably reach everything on the main display when only one of your hands is free. By double tapping on the home button or swiping down in the center of the bottom edge, One-handed mode temporarily scales down the display size for easier control.

If you want to open the notification panel at the top of the main display without reaching up every time, you can enable gestures on the fingerprint sensor located on the side of the Galaxy Z Flip for easier access. You can also adjust settings so that swiping down from any location on the main display will open the notification panel.

Switch on Focus Mode to Minimize Distractions

There are times when we all just need to accomplish the task at hand without any distractions. With the Galaxy Z Flip, you can create some peace and quiet and get in the zone with Focus Mode. The feature allows you to temporarily mute notifications from a customized list of apps and even cut down on distractions by disabling apps that you might be tempted to use for times when you truly need to focus.

Charge Your Devices Wirelessly With PowerShare

There’s nothing more frustrating than your earphones running out of battery during a long commute. With Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy Z Flip, you don’t need to wait until you find a plug to charge up your wearables. The AI-powered Single Take feature provides you with a range of photo, video and even ‘meme’able mode choices based on just one shot of up to 15 seconds long. Say your dog is performing a cute trick; all you have to do is select Single Take, aim the camera and click record – Single Take does the rest.

Once the moment is over, you can head to the Gallery to check out your dog’s antics in all kinds of different modes and filters – Single Take will even recommend the best cuts to you based on the subject and background.

Curate & Capture More Easily : Dual Preview

Not only do the Galaxy Z Flip’s innovative form factor and camera help make taking photos a seamless experience, but several new device UI updates also make your photography experience as intuitive and as convenient as possible.

Bottom Preview mode lets you flip the ordering of the preview and camera control displays between the top and the bottom screens as you wish. Ever since I was young, I’ve been captivated by engineering and technology — enthralled by new gadgets and curious about what made them work. I didn’t think I could be more obsessed with technology, but 2020 proved me wrong. This year gave me an even greater appreciation for all that it does and can potentially do. We had to reshape our lives, rethink the way we operate and become more flexible — and technology made it possible for us to do so. 2020 bolstered my determination to fully tap the infinite power and potential of tech to give people personalized experiences that enrich their lives and allow them to express themselves.

As we close out this year and I think of what’s to come in 2021, I feel encouraged by all the ways Samsung is cultivating open collaboration and driving innovation forward to empower people on their personal journeys. We have never believed in a one-size-fits-all mobile experience and we never will. We led the charge with 5G and changed the shape of the future with a series of foldable smartphones. Now, we’re working on revolutionary advancements in 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) that will redefine the parameters of what mobile can do and give consumers the freedom to tailor their mobile experiences to fit their lives — not the other way around.

2020 Highlights

This year, Samsung stayed true to its mission and forged new paths for landmark technology that will shape the next era of mobile innovation. Our vision of intelligent, connected devices with mobile phones at the center has become a reality. 2020 saw 5G — a technology Samsung has been pioneering for more than a decade — move into the limelight. Over the course of the last 10 years, Samsung laid the groundwork for the fifth generation of cellular technology by helping to build the global 5G infrastructure. And in 2019, we released the world’s first commercial 5G smartphone and tablet: The Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy Tab S6 5G. Samsung has been pushing to democratize 5G ever since. We are closing out the year with twenty 5G devices in the Galaxy ecosystem.

There was also growing momentum behind foldable smartphones, a category we launched commercially with the Galaxy Fold in 2019 and advanced with the release of Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold2 in 2020. Through our longstanding industry-leading partnerships, we established an open ecosystem for foldable devices and fostered UX innovation that enabled us to create an enhanced user experience with optimized app interactions and displays. The Z Fold2 was praised as a smartphone that reimagines what’s possible with mobile technology and I’m excited to say, it’s just a hint of what’s to come as we continue to explore, evolve and expand this category-changing space.

We also made headway in our efforts to make the world a better, more sustainable place. In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), we promoted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals on more than 80 million smartphones, mobilizing and empowering the Galaxy community via our Samsung Global Goals app. And we continue to take dedicated action throughout our product lifecycle to help the world transition to a circular economy — by extending product longevity, making greater use of sustainable materials in our packaging, and creating environmentally conscious products and accessories.

I’m thrilled with what Samsung accomplished this year, but as passionate pioneers committed to defying barriers to progress, we’re always thinking about what’s next. In the tour, Condola shares how the Galaxy Z Flip has not only helped her stay connected but also unleashed all-new experiences to enhance her creativity and meet this moment. While she navigates new ventures and priorities, Galaxy Z Flip’s Flex Mode unlocks all-new ways to capture, share and experience content. From hands-free video calls to selfies at all-new angles, Galaxy Z Flip is flexible enough to capture every second. And as Condola spends more time at home, she continues to look for moments of ease in her daily routine, and Samsung’s AirDresser does just that. It relaxes light wrinkles, removes odors, and has a sanitize cycle that can be used to breathe new life into your wardrobe without ever leaving the front door.

To see how Condola is making the most of these two devices, we caught up with her to discuss creativity, technology, and what she’s learned in the past few months.

How have you remained inspired and creative in the past few months?

When quarantine started, I had to give myself permission to stop and find beauty in the stillness. I used the time to listen to and rediscover the sound of my own breath. That much-needed space allowed room for the things that bring me joy and comfort, like music. My music collection has always been eclectic, but since quarantine began, I’ve been exploring more classical music and have found Brazilian Jazz so soothing.

For a sense of normalcy in quarantine, I’ve also been continuing to dress up, even if it’s just for myself. My general rule of thumb has always been: Dress how you want to feel. So that’s why you can find me in bright colors and patterns, and a big part of why I’ve been able to keep up that routine has been the AirDresser.

In general, what is your relationship with technology?

My life is all about creativity and self-expression, so I gravitate toward technology that enhances those facets of myself, without changing who I am. I use technology to create meaningful connections, whether with fans I’ve never met or friends and family I’ve known my whole life.

And recently, I’ve had so much fun exploring how Galaxy Z Flip can further enhance those relationships. By taking hands-free selfies for example, I can authentically capture myself in my environment whether I am sitting quietly in nature or in bed reading a book. And I love video chatting with my mom in the morning while having my hands free to make a quick breakfast. It lets me forget about the technology and just focus on the conversation.

How else have you been using Galaxy Z Flip?

Spending so much time at home has really blended my work life and personal life—and the Z Flip has helped me stay flexible, so I can navigate these uncertain times. Using split screen with Flex Mode makes it easy to scroll through music while I use the selfie camera to put on makeup or I can watch a film on the top half of the screen while taking notes on the bottom half. Those are just a couple of the many ways that it’s helped make my days a little easier, more creative, and more enjoyable.

Can you tell us more about how you’re using AirDresser?

When I step into a dress and it looks the way it’s supposed to, smooth and ready to wear, I’m instantly more confident and in a better mood. I’m really taking advantage of the Sanitize Cycle, and I love how it works with so many different kinds of fabrics. AirDresser also saves so much time. I get a notification on my Z Flip on the SmartThings app as soon as it’s done, which comes in handy since the machine is so quiet, I sometimes forget it’s even on.

In this second installment of a two-part series on the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge, we will take a look at another key innovation, which helps to protect the device from dust and dirt – the sweeper technology.

Sweeper Technology

In designing the Galaxy Z Flip’s hinge, Samsung engineers not only had to account for the spaces between the body and the hinge, but also meet three specific conditions: Elasticity (to account for shifts in the gap size); long-lasting flexibility (the hinge is tested to withstand 200,000 folds¹); and slimness (to keep the device’s sleek form factor).

Finding a solution that protected against particles and met those conditions meant dozens and dozens of failed prototypes. But then, one of Samsung’s top engineers noticed that the way fibers were used in vacuum cleaners was similar to what was required for the Hideaway Hinge. The sweeper fibers were not only pliable enough to cover all the gaps as the smartphone folds and unfolds, they also remained flexible after long-term usage.

Now let’s take a look at how Samsung engineers overcame all those challenges and what the outcome of their efforts looks like.

When you hear the word hinge, you probably think of the simple component that lets a door open and close. The Hideaway Hinge on the Galaxy Z Flip is so much more than that. It’s an innovation marvel and the backbone of the device – it quite literally holds the entire smartphone.

Designing the hinge was no easy feat. Samsung had to tackle some huge problems to ensure that it was ready for consumers.

First, Samsung had to invent a hinge that is strong, stable and offered a smooth experience, without adding any extra bulk. Second, Samsung had to come up with a way to prevent small particles, like dust and sand, from entering the tiny gap between the hinge and screen.

To solve both of these problems at once, Samsung engineers developed a patented Hideaway Hinge technology that combines two completely new, groundbreaking innovations: the dual CAM mechanism and sweeper technology. In this first installment of a two-part series, we will explore the first innovation of the Hideaway Hinge: the dual CAM mechanism.

Hideaway Hinge’s Dual CAM Mechanism

The ridge-shaped dual CAM mechanism is a key component of the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge and revolutionary, gradual folding experience. Because of this innovative technology, the Galaxy Z Flip can open, close and stand on its own at different angles. It’s the difference between a light switch that can only go on and off and a dimmer that offers many more degrees of control.

In addition, the precisely crafted dual CAM mechanism keeps the Hideaway Hinge slim, and the Galaxy Z Flip small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Here’s how the dual CAM mechanism works:

The recent updates for YouTube are just one milestone in the developments the two companies have brought to Samsung’s flagship and foldable devices. Thanks to the partnership, Galaxy users get an optimized experience for the most popular Google apps, such as Google Maps and Google Play Store, and enjoy greater reliability, app continuity, and security. Last year, Samsung and Google ushered in a new mobile era by creating a seamless foldable experience for the Galaxy Fold. Here is a closer look at some of the latest ways Samsung and Google are delivering a more valuable Android experience on Galaxy devices.

A New Experience for YouTube with Flex Mode

With Galaxy Z Flip’s unique folding system, you can set your Galaxy Z Flip on the table and watch your favorite YouTube channel hands-free. And now, this hands-free experience is taken up to the next level with Flex mode compatibility. When you enjoy YouTube with your Galaxy Z Flip hands-free, the display evenly splits into two 4-inch screens. While watching a video on the top half of the display, you can use the bottom half to search for other videos, read descriptions and write comments with no distractions.

Unfolded / Half-Folded

The Flex mode-optimized YouTube app also ensures that no matter what the aspect ratio of the video you are watching, you can view in comfort by adjusting the way the video fits in the top half of the screen. Square and vertical videos will nearly fill the entire space, while 16:9 videos will adjust to the center. But Flex mode compatibility with YouTube was more than just a simple user experience upgrade.

Working together, Samsung and Google’s engineers redesigned the app from the operating system level. This included integration of the Android Support Library, making it easier to bring Flex mode to more third-party services. Through the collaboration, Samsung has worked closely with the Android developer community to drive innovation for foldable devices. Galaxy Z Flip users can download the Flex mode-optimized YouTube app from the Google Play Store starting from April 22¹ and enjoy the enhanced features that come with the latest update.

Galaxy users can also get up to 4 months of free YouTube Premium and enjoy benefits such as ad-free viewing, offline play, and background play.²

Beyond the latest YouTube updates, Samsung and Google have been working on several other innovations for Galaxy devices.

The Best Features Coming to Galaxy Devices  

To start, Samsung is bringing support for Google’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) to Galaxy smartphones to make your conversations more seamless.³ The two companies have been working since 2018 to bring the features to Samsung devices.⁴

The Samsung Messages app with RCS allows users to do more, including chat over both Wi-Fi and mobile data, send and receive high-resolution photos and videos, receive read receipts, and create feature-rich group chats. The Messages app is also available on desktop, making it easy to transition seamlessly from mobile to PC.

In addition to the RCS integration, Samsung kicked off 2020 by offering out-of-the-box integration for Google Duo on both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Z Flip. Not only does Google Duo offer high-quality, high-speed video calling, it also allows up to 12 people to join a single video conference. On the Galaxy Z Flip, users can enjoy the app in Flex mode, where video chats appear on the top half, while call controls appear on the bottom half. Collaborations with Google are also bringing more interesting features to Galaxy devices.

With the ability to transcribe and caption media in real-time with incredible accuracy, Live Caption is one of the most exciting features on the Galaxy S20. Leveraging Google’s AI, Live Caption can produce captions for any audio or visual content, including YouTube videos, podcasts, and videos you and your friends have recorded. Developed in collaboration with the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, Live Caption is particularly helpful if you have hearing loss or are in an environment in which you don’t want to increase the volume. Users can toggle the feature on under either the Accessibility or Sound options in the device’s Settings menu.

As a result of the ongoing partnership with Google, Samsung is bringing monthly and quarterly security updates to Galaxy devices to further enhance user confidence and ensure the safety and security of their data. These include Google’s patches for Android, and Samsung’s patches for vulnerabilities and exposures.

Q: Could you tell us how your collaboration with Samsung came about?

Thom Browne: Samsung has supported my works for quite some time and coming together for this collaboration was very easy for me, especially when we both value provoking people to think and see things differently with our work.

Q: How did you approach the design of the special edition Galaxy Z Flip?

TB: For my collections, I take classic ideas and I reintroduce them to people in conceptual ways. It started from taking a piece of tailored clothing and reintroducing it in a way that makes people take interest in it again.

The Galaxy Z Flip’s clamshell design is familiar to me because my first device was a flip phone. That’s why this project is completely in tune with how I approach design myself. It’s all about pushing a classic idea forward and make it as innovative as possible.

Q: How did you incorporate your brand into the Galaxy Z Flip?

TB: Within the phone, you see so many different elements of my world. The use of signature colors is both on the exterior and interior of the phone. Elements of the world of tailoring are also within the stitching of the apps. The aesthetic of Thom Browne is even in the packaging. It’s designed in a way that’s reminiscent of walking into an office and seeing a desk and a briefcase.

Q: What do you think is the most special aspect of this collaboration?

TB: Fashion and technology intersect as they are both concerned with taking ideas and moving them forward. This phone is really unique because it has the signature of both the world of Samsung and Thom Browne. You can see it in the design, the innovative technology, and the attention to creating something that is timeless.

When people use this phone, I want them to feel like they are using something special that is carefully thought out in terms of its technology and design.

London Fashion Week

On February 14 in London, the Galaxy Z Flip made its runway debut during top designer Ashley Williams’ catwalk show. Known for bold, retro designs, Ashley Williams is an up-and-coming designer whose unique concept of self-expression provides the perfect foil to the stylish individuality of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Williams’ AW20 collection featured the Galaxy Z Flip alongside a custom-made Galaxy Z Flip microbag and hairclips to showcase how the smartphone is designed to complement any style. The Galaxy Z Flip was also spotted in the front row, as well as backstage, as models and influencers alike looked to document their Fashion Week adventures in style.

Milan Fashion Week

On February 20, the Galaxy Z Flip was the guest of honor at a pop-up store launch event at the Milan location of leading fashion retailer 10 Corso Como, where technology and fashion enthusiasts gathered to experience the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition first-hand.

Users can purchase the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition at the pop-up store, which features a store design concept as seamless as the Galaxy Z Flip’s new form factor and UX design. Visitors to the pop-up have been learning how the smartphone can fit seamlessly into their lifestyles, whatever they may be.

Paris Fashion Week

The Galaxy Z Flip is also being featured at a pop-up store event during Paris Fashion Week at the iconic Galeries Lafayette department store on the Champs-Élysées. The pop-up store is set right among some of the world’s most fashionable brands and demonstrates how fashion and technology can meet to produce innovative solutions to suit any lifestyle.

So Long, Smartphone Stands

Picture this: While on vacation, with your smartphone mounted on your tripod, you carefully frame a shareworthy photo, only to find that the angle of your just-snapped shot isn’t quite right. So you find another spot, set up again, and hope that you take your pick in time to capture that scenic sunset in all its glory.

With Flex mode on the Galaxy Z Flip, you can forget tripods. All you need to do to set up a spectacular photo or video is fold your smartphone to the angle you need and place it wherever you like. It’s capable of sitting upright on its own, and stays open at various angles. So there’s nothing holding you back from finding the perfect perspective for capturing the moment. When posing for a photo in front of a magnificent skyline, open the device to a wide angle. For portrait photography, narrow the angle to place your subject front and center.

The stability provided by the Galaxy Z Flip’s freestop folding system, together with the camera’s Night mode, makes the smartphone a game-changer for low-light photography. Capturing vivid nighttime shots is simple when you have a camera that’s capable of standing perfectly still, and minimizes noise to bring out details in dark settings. The camera also makes it easy to record mesmerizing hyperlapse videos after dark with its Hyperlapse function and Night mode.

Add Some Flex to Your Phone

Designed exclusively for the Galaxy Z Flip’s unique form factor, Flex mode completely reimagines the mobile experience to allow users to do more, from multiple angles, hands-free. It’s activated as soon as the user folds or unfolds their phone, and when the device is free-standing, it automatically splits the display into two four-inch screens. Content is visible on the top half, while controls are presented on the bottom.

The Galaxy Z Flip features several Flex mode-optimized apps¹ right out of the box, with plenty more on the way. Take the camera, for example. When the user launches the Camera app, they’re instantly presented with a preview of their shot on the top half of the screen, with controls to switch cameras and modes and manage settings accessible at the bottom. When viewing photos and videos in the Gallery, your content is displayed on top, while the bottom half of the display acts as a touchpad of sorts that lets you zoom in and out and cycle through photos with a simple pinch, swipe or flick.

Content creators can utilize the Galaxy Z Flip’s camera in Flex mode to make sure that their photo or video is the perfect aspect ratio for the type of content they’re producing. The top half of the screen lets users view their shot or recording in a wide range of aspect ratios, including 1:1, 9:16, 3:4, 9:22 and 16:9.² The Galaxy Z Flip supports to record 16:9 video, which, when recorded while the device is free-standing, is presented on the top half of the screen. The ability to take immersive 16:9 video from virtually any position makes it easy to record shareworthy clips and upload them online.

It’s not just photography that benefits from Flex mode’s versatility. The ability to place your phone upright and video chat hands-free adds a new layer of comfort to connecting with friends. Samsung worked closely with Google to optimize Google Duo for the Galaxy Z Flip to make users’ experience with the video chatting app even more convenient. As a result, the device allows users to instantly initiate video calls with people they’d like to contact, simply by tapping on the Google Duo icon in the Phone, Contacts or Messages app. When making their call, they’ll also be able to do things like send fun AR Emojis and switch to wide-angle mode.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Going forward, Samsung will continue to collaborate with developers and partners to dream up new ways to optimize apps for Flex mode, and unlock ever more convenient and creative uses for foldable devices.

A Multitasking Machine

The Galaxy Z Flip’s unique form factor and foldable UX make multitasking seamless. The ability to fold the device’s spacious 6.7-inch screen in half adds a whole new dimension to managing two apps with Multi-Active Window. Enjoy easy access to your go-to apps by swiping left from the right side of the display and launching the completely customizable Multi-Window Tray.

The possibilities are endless. Thinking of testing out a new recipe? Watch a cooking video on the top half of the display while taking notes on ingredients and instructions on the bottom. Got your eye on a new piece of tech or clothing? Make sure you’re getting the best deal by simultaneously comparing prices from multiple sellers. The bottom half of the screen is also perfect for, for example, searching for info online on the new show you’re watching, or typing out particularly inspiring passages from the e-book you’re reading.

A Convenient Cover

One of the Galaxy Z Flip’s most versatile features is its cover display, which allows you to manage notifications, take quick selfies and more, all without unfolding your phone.

Double tap the display or press the side key to instantly view the date, time and battery status. A swipe to the left will pull up music controls, while a swipe to the right accesses the notification panel. Once the user taps a notification and unfolds the device, they’re able to pick up precisely where they left off on the main screen.

A double press of the power button will launch the Camera, which is perfect for prepping your pose before snapping a selfie. Once you and your friends have landed on a look you like and adjusted your position and background accordingly using the cover display, you can snap your shot with a press of the volume button, or by simply showing your palm to the camera. Unfolding the phone will take you straight to the Gallery, where you’ll be able to take a closer look at your photo on the main screen.

Last year, Samsung redefined smartphone design as we know it with the introduction of its first foldable device, the Galaxy Fold. While that category-defining smartphone was created with a focus on the action of unfolding (i.e., “What if you could unfold your phone to experience apps and content on a larger screen?”), the design of the company’s second foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip, focuses on the opposite action: folding your smartphone to make it more compact.

As Tae-joong Kim, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Business, explained, by combining a pocket-friendly form with striking style, “The Galaxy Z lineup introduces a new identity to the foldable mobile category. One that adds a fashionable touch to users’ lives.”

Color-Coordinated

The Galaxy Z Flip is available in a choice of three stylish colors: the bold and creative Mirror Purple, the luxurious Mirror Black, which features a slight bluish tint, and the elegant and refined Mirror Gold. During the manufacturing process, Samsung combined a smooth glass finish with precise processing, resulting in layers of colors that reflect a range of hues depending on the angle at which the device is folded.

For those who like to dress simply, the Galaxy Z Flip can add an eye-catching touch to your outfit that can take your look to the next level. Created for those who want their technology to be as iconic as their wardrobe, the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition features a pebble grey exterior adorned with the iconic New York fashion brand’s signature colors.

It’s All in the Details

Measuring just 73.6mm across, the Galaxy Z Flip is small enough to fit in the palm of one’s hand, and slips easily into a pocket or bag. To make the device as compact and portable as possible, Samsung tested out numerous form factors before ultimately landing on the design you see before you. No detail was overlooked. The design was contemplated down to the micrometer to ensure that it would offer users a comfortable grip.

The finished design also reflects careful consideration of usability, as evidenced by convenient features like the cover display. When the Galaxy Z Flip is closed, the cover display presents users with information such as the date, time, their device’s battery status and more, and when they’re taking a selfie, it allows them to see how they look. When the device is opened, Samsung’s intuitive One UI makes it easy to manage the Galaxy Z Flip’s spacious, 6.7-inch display with one hand.

“Along with size and grip, the user experience was a key focus of design,” Kim explained. “We designed the Galaxy Z Flip to make it easy to: 1) access basic information when the device is folded, and 2) multitask on its large display.”

Unfolding a New User Experience

Through extensive research into how consumers are using their smartphones today, Samsung identified that the ability to fold and utilize a smartphone at various angles would add a new layer of convenience to the user experience. The Galaxy Z Flip was specifically designed to be folded and used at multiple angles, which makes everything from taking pictures and video calling, to viewing media more comfortable and convenient.

Realizing that functionality would require a hinge that was both durable and exquisite, like a cogwheel. Through exhaustive research on hinge designs, as well as close cooperation among hardware departments, Samsung eventually came up with a blueprint for a hinge that would be capable of standing a foldable device up at any angle. The Galaxy Z Flip’s intricate Hideaway Hinge is the product of these efforts. It allows users to utilize their device at various angles, and enables the smartphone to stand completely on its own. It’s also sturdy enough to ensure that the device will not open or close by itself.

Samsung anticipates that the Galaxy Z Flip’s ability to stand on its own will change the smartphone experience. “Both the market and consumer lifestyles are constantly diversifying,” said Kim. “To address consumers’ needs, we will continue exploring ways to enrich the Galaxy Z lineup and the foldable mobile category with meaningful and enjoyable experiences.”

The first Unpacked of a new decade is officially in the books, and if Samsung’s latest innovations are any indication, the future of mobile innovation is incredibly bright.

Held earlier today in San Francisco, Galaxy Unpacked 2020 saw Samsung officially introduce the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S20 – devices designed for a new era of mobile innovation. Over the course of the event, presenters including Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, outlined how the company’s latest innovations will help launch a new generation of intelligent connections.

Attendees eagerly await the start of Galaxy Unpacked 2020 inside San Francisco’s famous Palace of Fine Arts.

The Future Changes Shape

Samsung wasted no time showing the world that this year’s Unpacked was going to be special. With the introduction of its latest statement-making foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip, the company showed once again how it is revolutionizing the mobile experience by redefining what a smartphone can do.

After introducing Samsung’s all-new, compact and stylish foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, Rebecca Hirst, Head of Mobile Product Marketing, Samsung Electronics UK, takes a moment to discuss the device’s new form factor and first-of-its-kind display. “With this phone, we’ve done the impossible and created ultra-thin glass that folds,” says Hirst. “Every time you fold it, you’re not just bending glass, you’re bending the laws of physics.”

Hirst treats the crowd to a demonstration of the Galaxy Z Flip’s selfie camera. With the phone in Flex mode, she frames and snaps her selfie on the top half of the screen, and uses the bottom half to open the Gallery app and flip through her photos.

The Galaxy S20 Changes the Mobile Camera Game

Speaking of cameras, Samsung followed up the Galaxy Z Flip’s reveal by unveiling a new series of smartphones designed to fundamentally change the way we capture content.

The Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra’s revolutionary camera system combines advanced AI with Samsung’s largest image sensors yet. This makes Samsung’s newest flagships game-changers for mobile photography – devices that are not only capable of capturing photos and videos in stunning detail, but smart enough to help you choose the best possible shot.

After the smartphones’ unveiling, Drew Blackard, Head of Mobile Product Management, Samsung Electronics America, discusses how the Galaxy S20’s AI technology makes it easy to take advantage of the camera’s advanced hardware.

Filmmakers Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry, hosts of the YouTube channel “Colin and Samir,” offer a demonstration of the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s Space Zoom technology from San Francisco’s scenic Hawk Hill. The most precise zoom function ever built into a smartphone, it’s capable of magnifying shots up to 100 times, and reveals incredible details in the backgrounds of photos.

After the show, Unpacked attendees flock to the event’s experience zone to test out the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s pro-grade camera.

After revealing her company’s new role as Samsung’s exclusive partner for mobile entertainment, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer, Jackie Lee-Joe, discusses some of the can’t-miss content that Galaxy users can look forward to. “In the coming months, Samsung mobile users will have access to a whole host of new and exciting bonus content based on some of your favorite Netflix Originals, accessible through Samsung Daily and Samsung channels,” says Lee-Joe. “The content will shine a light on our diverse mix of creators from all around the world, a selection of whom will be handed a Galaxy S20 to shoot this content themselves, so that they have the freedom to continue inventing new ways to tell stories their way.”

Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP of Platforms and Ecosystems at Google, outlines his company’s partnership with Samsung to change the way we connect with one another. He describes the decision to deeply integrate Google Duo into the 5G-enabled Galaxy S20 as one of the first steps toward realizing that goal. “Thanks to 5G, the video calls are higher quality, and that makes you feel more connected to the person you’re talking to,” says Lockheimer. “Also, with Duo built right into Galaxy’s native apps … we can help people connect much more seamlessly, without interruption.”

David S. Park, Head of Mobile Channel Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, discusses how, with a fast processor, a 120Hz display, up to 16GB of RAM, and 5G support, the Galaxy S20 takes mobile gaming to the next level. After announcing a partnership to bring Microsoft’s Forza Street to mobile for the first time exclusively through the Galaxy Store, Park highlights a key reason why the Galaxy S20 is perfect for playing the popular game. “Its new Dynamic AMOLED display is the most immersive ever on a Galaxy S device,” Park explains. “So you get smooth motion and clear gameplay.”

Samsung officially introduces the Galaxy Buds+. Describing them as earbuds designed for those who love premium sound, Park explains how enhancements such as two-way speakers, incredibly long battery life and Spotify integration make immersing yourself in your favorite music and podcasts easier than ever.

High-Tech Meets High Fashion

After officially unveiling the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung took a moment to discuss another exciting partnership that will change how users view their device.

Hirst introduces the crowd to the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. Created in partnership with the renowned fashion designer, the device proves once and for all that “high fashion and high-tech go hand in hand.”
