At its Galaxy S21 Unpacked event earlier this year, Samsung announced a series of partnerships with automakers. The Genesis GV60 will become the first vehicle to showcase the innovative new technology when it launches in September, starting in Korea.

Samsung’s digital key is powered by advanced UWB technology, a short-range, wireless communication protocol that uses radio waves to operate, much like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. However, UWB transmits radio waves at a much higher frequency, enabling highly accurate spatial awareness and directional capabilities that allow mobile devices to understand their surroundings better.

UWB enables passive entry, so you can say goodbye to digging through your pockets and bags in search of your keys. You’ll be able to lock and unlock your car, start the engine, open the trunk and even activate personalized settings like adjusting your seat and mirror position before you enter the car — all through your smartphone and without pushing a button. If you’re lending your car to a friend or family member for a short period, you can easily share the digital key and even set a time limit on how long the shared key will be available to them.⁴

The solution uses Samsung’s embedded Secure Element (eSE), designed to protect your most sensitive information and encryption keys, so you never have to worry about your keys falling into the wrong hands. The precision of UWB technology also stops potential relay attacks, where the radio signal is jammed or intercepted. Samsung’s digital key is fully compliant with the digital key standard as defined by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), in which Samsung has been one of the driving members.

Multi-Active Window ①: Viewing Two Navigation Applications – Simultaneously

When choosing which route to take with a navigation app, unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams or construction, can make you regret the route you’ve taken. Galaxy Z foldable phone users have an easy fix to such situations: thanks to Multi-Active Window, you can easily open up two different navigation apps at the same time to compare expected arrival times and traffic situations so as to follow the navigation route that will get you to your destination as quickly as possible.

Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold2 features a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that allows you to check your route with a single glance. If you’d like to switch back to following just one navigation app, simply adjust the Multi-Active Window tray to view the navigation app you prefer with a single tap of the screen. With this easy-to-view and easily dividable screen, you can navigate rush hour with an extra helping hand.

Multi-Active Window ②: Mobile Banking Made Easy

As mobile banking has become more convenient, it has become more and more common for us to use our smartphones to make financial transactions as we go about our day, particularly when we need to send a friend some money or make a quick online purchase. However, bank account numbers are not easy to memorize, meaning that when it comes to making a transfer, we find ourselves switching back and forth between app windows – making what should be a seamless process somewhat inconvenient.

Galaxy Z foldable phone users can get their mobile bank transfers done in no time, as they can divide their smartphone’s screen to view the messenger app with account information on the top half and manage their mobile banking app on the bottom half. You can enjoy convenient and accurate transactions on the very first try all without the hassle of memorizing account numbers as you can check the correct information as you go thanks to Multi-Active Window.

When you need to access information or details for a bank transfer regularly, you can use App Pair, a feature that lets you open up to three of your most-frequently used apps at the same time, to ‘pair’ your notepad with your mobile banking application – meaning that the two will open simultaneously and allow you to make your payments more conveniently.

Drag and Drop: For Editing Files, Even While on the Go

We’ve all had those moments after work when we’re enjoying having logged off for the day – but then an urgent message comes in that the presentation we were working on requires editing. In order to allow users to respond to such time-sensitive requests using just their Galaxy Z foldable smartphones, Samsung has developed intuitive document editing functions for easy file editing in any situation.

Drag and Drop is a feature that lets you copy & paste text, charts and images instantly when using compatible apps. For example, say you have divided your screen into three parts using Multi-Active Window to open up Excel, PowerPoint, and Word at the same time. You can easily edit all your files in one go with this feature as you can copy data from Excel and paste it right away into your PowerPoint presentation, or copy an image from PowerPoint and paste it directly into your Word document. From editing through to sending the edited file, everything can be taken care of directly from your smartphone.

Multi-Active Window ③: Making Travel Plans Easier and Quicker With Vertical Split Screen

Making concrete and organized travel plans is a crucial part of having a relaxing vacation, especially when you’re planning for a spontaneous weekend away or a sudden trip that doesn’t leave you with much time to plan. Getting everything done at once can be overwhelming, so by harnessing Multi-Active Window and Vertical Split Screen Mode of your Galaxy Z foldable phone, you can make your vacation plans and bookings with optimal efficiency. First, split your top screen vertically, and harness the bottom screen to research your vacation ideas while making note of itineraries in one half of your split top screen and searching for real-time pricings of accommodations on the other half.

Furthermore, Galaxy Z Fold users can simply swipe left on their Edge panel, tap the app they’d like to switch into their Multi-Active Window layout and drag it into the layout to instantly open the app. For your most commonly-used layouts, you can also save a specific mode into your Edge panel for easy and instant access whenever you need it.

Flex Mode: Harnessing Your Foldable Phone for Victory With a Second Screen

These days, many gamers are using game walkthroughs, which are guides that provide useful information pertaining to the game’s characters, maps, items and more. In order to most effectively enjoy a walkthrough while playing a game, Galaxy Z Fold2 users can harness their smartphone as a handy secondary monitor by using Flex mode and the Cover display. Simply place your device in a convenient location and enjoy stress-free gaming without the hassle of having to set up a secondary monitor or arrange a smartphone within the best field of vision.

Split Screen Capture: For Instant Sharing of Those Must-See Moments

When you are watching a TV show or movie, you are bound to run into a hilarious scene that you just have to share with others. So, what do you do when you want to share these must-see scenes with friends? You have to undergo the cumbersome process of screen capturing, cropping, editing and sharing your screen capture via messaging application, all without missing as little of your favorite show as possible. So as to let you enjoy your favorite content while sharing, the Galaxy Z Fold2 comes with the Split Screen Capture feature.

The Split Screen Capture feature of the Galaxy Z Fold2 allows you to take a separate screenshot of up to three applications on your screen at the same time and then select only the screenshots of the specific application, or applications, of your choice. After capturing the separated screen, you will see the screenshots of the open applications at the bottom of your display. Simply select the screenshot you would like to share and drag and drop that image into your messenger application to seamlessly share the image for uninterrupted media and sharing experiences.

Flex mode ①: For Freestanding Viewing Experiences

Watching a video on your smartphone with the device propped up on a surface without a phone stand, tripod or holder is about never very enjoyable; even when you are resting your phone against an object, it’s far too easy for the phone to slip down, and without a stand or other accessory, it is not always easy to get your phone to stand at the desired angle. However, if you are Galaxy Z foldable device user, you need not worry about such hindrances, and there’s no need to buy any separate accessories. The devices themselves can act as their own stand in order to allow you to watch your favorite content at variety of angles while moving both hands freely.

When you use Flex mode, the screen will automatically divide into two when you fold the phone to make it stand at a certain angle. The unique advantage of Galaxy Z Fold2 is that you can even watch your chosen media directly from the cover display. If you fold your smartphone to stand on its two displays with the hinge pointing up like a tent, you can enjoy watching videos in this other unique and stable format. The Galaxy Z Fold2’s cover display of 6.2-inches, enhanced from the previous Fold’s cover display size of 4.6-inches, matches the size of regular smartphone displays, meaning that your viewing experiences are not compromised when watching content.

Dual Preview: For Photos Taken Your Way

One of the great benefits of hanging out with close friends is that, when the moment arises, you have your own personal photographers available. But not everyone’s photography skills are the same – sometimes the picture you take for your friend will be fabulous while the one they take for you could use some work. In order to provide better shooting experiences and protect friendships, Samsung developed the Dual Preview feature, available on the Galaxy Z Fold2.

Dual Preview allows not just the photographer but also the subject on the other side of the camera to look at themselves on the large-sized Cover display of the Galaxy Z Fold2. You can experiment with your facial expression and pose to find the best look, and then even directly take the photo yourself by showing the palm of your hand to the camera. Essentially, even when your friend is holding your phone like a tripod, you can take selfies in the way that suits you best.

Flex mode ②: For More Precise Editing

These days we are always adding filters or other such layers, such as handwritten words and stickers, to our pictures. The Galaxy Z foldable phone lineup is here to help you make these edits more precisely thanks to its Multi-Window function. When you divide the screen into two and open the original image on the top and the photo editing application in the bottom display, you can work on the photos while comparing the two screens real-time.¹ By comparing the edits to the original image, you can ensure that any special effects you add are kept in line with the original photo’s tone. You can also open an image that you’d like to use as a reference on the top screen while editing on the bottom screen for even more editing inspiration.

For further editing ease, you can also harness the AI-powered Object Eraser feature which erases unnecessary objects in your photos. Simply open the original photo on the top screen and use the bottom screen to erase those background or other unnecessary elements in your photos one by one by touching the screen. By comparing the edited version and the original version at once, you can ensure that what remains in your edited photos is what is worth emphasizing.

Auto framing: For Seamless Angle Adjustment with Automatic AI in Group Shots

Taking a group shot to commemorate the moment when hanging out with friends and family is a must. However, someone in the group will always suffer by being caught at the wrong angle, or have to bear the inconvenience of adjusting the camera several times to find the perfect angle as others move around. This is why the Galaxy Z foldable line comes with the dedicated Auto framing feature, which helps you capture videos with all members of your group in frame and at the right angle.

Thanks to AI-powered machine learning capabilities, Auto framing recognizes the body and faces of the subject or subjects in front of the camera and will then track and automatically adjust the angle of view to capture them by zooming in or out, moving the screen, and more. The camera focus will automatically adjust when up to two people move in and out of focus, and once more than three people enter the frame, the camera will zoom out so that as many people as possible can appear in-shot. Simply place your Galaxy Z foldable device at the right angle and you are more than ready to take winning group shots worthy of sharing.

Packed with the best of Samsung’s foldable technology, the Galaxy Z Fold2 introduced a whole host of new smartphone experiences to users. Since December last year, users have been enjoying One UI 3 with Android 11 on the Galaxy Z Fold2. And now, following the release of One UI 3.1, the foldable experience is about to get even better.

Users can now multitask more efficiently on the Galaxy Z Fold2. In addition to simplifying everyday interactions on the device, the UX also provides a more natural visual experience. Read on to learn more about the exciting features on the device.

Multitasking Made Easy

On the Galaxy Z Fold2, users can now instantly return to up to three previously opened Multi-Active Windows on the Main Screen via the Recents tab. Users can also bring two Multi-Active Windows directly from the Main Screen to the Cover Screen via the Recents tab.

Need to reply to an urgent message while checking a document? The latest update allows users to launch Multi-Active Window directly from notifications in the Quick Panel. Just long press, drag and drop the relevant notification to open apps with Multi-Active Window.¹

Simplify Everyday Interactions

The latest update makes routine interactions on the Galaxy Z Fold2 easier and faster.

Users no longer need to reach for the power button to turn off the screen. By enabling the ‘Palm touch to turn off screen’ feature in settings, both the Cover and Main Screen can be put on standby with a touch of the palm or a double tap.

One UI 3 brings added flexibility to the Camera app. When shooting in Flex mode, the position of the controls can be adjusted for greater comfort. Following suggestions from users, Samsung also added a Delete and Share button to the preview window in Flex mode.

Notifications in the Quick Panel are now categorized, and you can switch between different media controls in the Quick Panel by swiping. The weather widgets on the Cover and Main Screen are also synced so users can get the same information, no matter how they use the phone.

Natural and Comfortable Visual Experiences 

The visual experience on Galaxy Z Fold2’s immersive Main Screen is even more comfortable. When making video calls in Flex mode, users can fill the top half of the display with the video of the person they are speaking to.

The updated Light and Dark themes bring extra depth to the overall visual experience on the Galaxy Z Fold2 while the redesigned vertical volume slider further minimizes clutter on the screen.

Ever since I was young, I’ve been captivated by engineering and technology — enthralled by new gadgets and curious about what made them work. I didn’t think I could be more obsessed with technology, but 2020 proved me wrong. This year gave me an even greater appreciation for all that it does and can potentially do. We had to reshape our lives, rethink the way we operate and become more flexible — and technology made it possible for us to do so. 2020 bolstered my determination to fully tap the infinite power and potential of tech to give people personalized experiences that enrich their lives and allow them to express themselves.

As we close out this year and I think of what’s to come in 2021, I feel encouraged by all the ways Samsung is cultivating open collaboration and driving innovation forward to empower people on their personal journeys. We have never believed in a one-size-fits-all mobile experience and we never will. We led the charge with 5G and changed the shape of the future with a series of foldable smartphones. Now, we’re working on revolutionary advancements in 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) that will redefine the parameters of what mobile can do and give consumers the freedom to tailor their mobile experiences to fit their lives — not the other way around.

2020 Highlights

This year, Samsung stayed true to its mission and forged new paths for landmark technology that will shape the next era of mobile innovation. Our vision of intelligent, connected devices with mobile phones at the center has become a reality. 2020 saw 5G — a technology Samsung has been pioneering for more than a decade — move into the limelight. Over the course of the last 10 years, Samsung laid the groundwork for the fifth generation of cellular technology by helping to build the global 5G infrastructure. And in 2019, we released the world’s first commercial 5G smartphone and tablet: The Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy Tab S6 5G. Samsung has been pushing to democratize 5G ever since. There was also growing momentum behind foldable smartphones, a category we launched commercially with the Galaxy Fold in 2019 and advanced with the release of Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold2 in 2020. Through our longstanding industry-leading partnerships, we established an open ecosystem for foldable devices and fostered UX innovation that enabled us to create an enhanced user experience with optimized app interactions and displays. The Z Fold2 was praised as a smartphone that reimagines what’s possible with mobile technology and I’m excited to say, it’s just a hint of what’s to come as we continue to explore, evolve and expand this category-changing space.

We also made headway in our efforts to make the world a better, more sustainable place. In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), we promoted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals on more than 80 million smartphones, mobilizing and empowering the Galaxy community via our Samsung Global Goals app. And we continue to take dedicated action throughout our product lifecycle to help the world transition to a circular economy — by extending product longevity, making greater use of sustainable materials in our packaging, and creating environmentally conscious products and accessories.

Since the early days of mobile phones, people have been expressing themselves through ringtones. It’s a trend that has continued to this day, even as mobile technology continues to advance at breakneck speed. According to Samsung’s internal data, over 50 percent of Galaxy users use a personalized ringtone.

One UI is designed to make everyday life simpler and bring joy to the everyday experience. Along with visual refinements, Galaxy Note20, Galaxy Z Fold2, Galaxy Z Flip 5G and Galaxy S20 FE devices now offer an expansive sound palette.¹ The updated sound experience includes 10 brand new ringtones performed exclusively for Galaxy by professional classical and jazz musicians from around the world to create a relaxing vibe while giving users more options for personalization and self-expression.

Finding the Right Notes

From the subtle charging notification tones to the alarms, UX designers at Samsung carefully curated every aspect to bring a unified experience to users. Since Galaxy users come from all corners of the world, every rhythm and tone on the devices was chosen to reflect four universally recognizable themes that were first introduced with the Galaxy S20 series – Galaxy, Retro, Fun and Calm.²

Sounds on Galaxy devices are more than mere notifications. They also serve to elevate users’ daily lives. For the Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Z Fold2, Samsung added five original Jazz tunes and another five classical pieces to the Calm theme with the hopes of bringing positivity to users’ everyday lives.

Putting the Pieces Together

Bringing the new music to life was a process that spanned the globe. For the classical pieces, Samsung invited seasoned musicians from conservatoires in South Korea to participate in the recording. The jazz recording session, meanwhile, brought together a group of award-winning musicians and composers in the U.S.

“The synergy in this project comes from the artistry of each individual,” said composer and horn player Jesse McGinty.

From the grand piano to the flugelhorn and even the harp, the new recordings were created with a rich tapestry of instruments.

“People from all around the world are going to use these devices. That’s why we wanted to use different instruments to reflect that diversity,” explained music director Sue Jin Sung.

Fueled by their passion to share music with Galaxy users, the musicians meticulously crafted every note to deliver warmth and comfort.

“Our ultimate goal was to create an intimate sound that’s calming and relaxing,” said sound engineer Byeong Joon Hwang.

Your Everyday Soundtrack

Whenever the new songs play on Galaxy devices, McGinty hopes they can give users a break from the hassles of everyday life.

“You can take all this music with you everywhere you go,” said guitarist Matthew Yeakley. “They [can become] your own soundtrack.”

From improved productivity capabilities to unique camera experiences, the latest update¹ promises to take the Galaxy Fold to the next level. Here’s everything you need to know about the update.

Power Up Your Productivity

Whether you are multitasking or working on the go, the latest update helps you get things done faster with the Galaxy Fold.

Instead of spending time finding the apps you need, App Pair lets you launch up to three of your favorite apps together in your preferred split screen layout.

This feature can be accessed via the Edge Panel, which combines the Multi-Window Tray with Edge Panel for improved convenience. All you need to do is swipe the side of the screen² to see up to 22 of your favorite apps. The arrangement of the Multi-Active Window layout can now also be done horizontally, giving you more flexibility for multitasking.

If you need more screen space to work with, the updated Samsung DeX lets you easily connect the Galaxy Fold to a Smart TV wirelessly.³ All you need to do is tap on the Samsung DeX icon in the quick panel.

Once the two devices are connected, you can customize the second screen to suit your needs with screen zoom and various font size options. You can even use the Galaxy Fold as a touch pad to control the second display with multi-finger gestures.

Maximum Flexibility for Your Shoots

The Galaxy Fold’s unique form factor is designed to help you capture photos and videos exactly the way you want. The latest update brings even more flexibility to this innovative camera experience.

Shooting with Auto framing is like having a dedicated cameraman always by your side. Depending on how many people are in front of the camera, the feature automatically zooms in or out to ensure the Galaxy Fold captures everything. It can even track motion to keep the subject centrally framed.

Capture View Mode gives you the option to check your shots as you shoot. It shows you up to five of the latest photos or videos on the left side of the Main Screen, while giving you a preview of your next shot on the other half.

Dual Preview enhances collaboration between the subject and the photographer by showing a preview of the image on both the Cover and Main Screen of the Galaxy Fold. This feature also works with video and can be activated in Pro Video mode.

The latest update lets you maximize the power of the Galaxy Fold’s rear camera, even when you are taking selfies. Simply open the Camera app on the Cover Screen and activate Rear Cam Selfie. This feature allows you to use the high-resolution rear camera and its wide range of advanced functions for selfies.

Pro Video Mode on the Galaxy Fold now comes with more shooting (21:9 ratio and 24fps video) and assistant functions (histogram, focus peaking), while Single Take lets you capture up to 15 seconds of content to deliver a selection of best moments in photos and video.

Stay Seamlessly Connected

Forget about repeating long, complicated Wi-Fi passwords to your friends and family. With the Galaxy Fold, you can now directly share the password of the Wi-Fi you are connected to trusted Galaxy devices that are near you.

The updated Wi-Fi feature can also show you the speed of nearby connections (Very Fast, Fast, Normal Slow) to help you easily find one that’s suitable.

UWB Technology is the Next Big Thing in Wireless Tech

Technology is always evolving, but every now and then, a new capability emerges, and we instantly know it’s something special — like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Samsung believes Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is one such game-changing wireless communication tech, which is why we are working tirelessly to advance and deploy it as quickly as possible. Together with industry leaders, we are striving to accelerate UWB’s broad adoption and implementation across ecosystems.

Samsung is Driving UWB Forward

Samsung has been making significant investments in UWB technology because we recognize its vast potential to revolutionize the way we use our smart devices to manage our lives. In 2018, we established a full-time task force dedicated to integrating UWB into our products, and soon after, we teamed up with NXP and HID Global to initiate the creation of the FiRa Consortium, an industry organization that promotes the adoption of UWB technology for use cases such as access control, location-based services and device-to-device services.

In the last year, FiRa has grown by leaps and bounds. Its members now hail from over 45 organizations across a vast range of industries, from consumer and enterprise technology to universities and automobile manufacturers. We are developing use cases, defining industry standards and establishing certification programs for interoperability because Samsung is staunchly committed to open collaboration, as it allows us to accelerate the development of cutting-edge technology and bring it to everyone, not just a select few.

Samsung’s UWB Innovation and the Road Ahead

In August, Samsung made history when we released the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, the first Android smartphone to feature UWB technology. And our newly released foldable device, the Galaxy Z Fold2, is equipped with UWB as well. Thanks to UWB, owners of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and Z Fold2 can enjoy incredible precision and accuracy when using Nearby Share, which allows users to connect to over two billion Android devices and instantly transmit photos and files to family, friends and colleagues. UWB has also enhanced our SmartThings Find feature by enabling the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and Z Fold2 to generate an augmented reality (AR) visual display that shows you the exact direction, distance and location of your other Galaxy devices.

The device comes with a larger 6.2-inch Cover Screen, giving you quick access to notifications and ample space to complete general tasks, such as viewing and replying to messages. Let’s say you want to watch a video link your friend sent you in detail. Simply tap on the link and watch content right on the Cover Screen in both portrait and landscape mode.

Flex mode allows you to watch content without interruption even when you unfold the device. The feature automatically brings all the apps that are opened on the Cover Screen to the Main Screen, so you don’t have to waste any time and start all over again.

Keep Your Hands Free

Whether you are attending a virtual meeting in a café or following a video recipe in the kitchen, the Galaxy Z Fold2 can free up your hands and give you more flexibility while multitasking. The Hideaway Hinge allows both the Cover and Main Screen to stay open at multiple angles without a stand, providing you with a wide range of viewing options for all types of situations.

When you unfold the Galaxy Z Fold2 slightly and rest the device on a surface, you can view content on the Cover Screen hands-free. If you need more space to work with, just open the device further to change from the Cover to the Main Screen. In this mode, the top half of the Main Screen will play the video, while the bottom half will show the video controls.

For a more immersive entertainment experience, all you need to do is unfold the device fully. Featuring an Infinity-O Display with 120Hz refresh rate, the fully unfolded 7.6-inch Main Screen delivers lifelike, dynamic visuals. Shoot With Maximum Flexibility

When used with Flex mode, the Galaxy Z Fold2’s cameras become even more powerful, allowing you to shoot exactly the way you want. The flexibility enabled by the feature lets you maximize the advantage of the rear camera, even when you are taking selfies. Simply turn on the Camera app on the Cover Screen and tap on the Rear Cam Selfie button. You can then unfold the device to take selfies with the rear camera while using the Cover Screen as a viewfinder.

Capture View mode on the Galaxy Z Fold2 lets you check photos and videos as you shoot. The feature works with Flex mode, so you can view up to five of your recent captures in the bottom half of the Main Screen, while the preview of the next shot remains in the top half.

Multi-Active Window on the Galaxy Z Fold2 makes it easier to manage those moments and stay organized by allowing you to keep multiple app windows open on the same screen. You can get that email from your boss, check the answer on the web, and answer via messenger all on the same screen without ever closing a window. Even when you have multiple apps open, they still function smoothly in their resized configuration.

Multi-Active Window is easy to use. While one app is open you can drag and drop a second app icon to the screen, and it will automatically open in a second window. From there, you can tap the divider to customize the layout and arrange your apps as you like. The feature supports up to three apps, or you can run the same app in different windows simultaneously – particularly handy when you’re comparison shopping online and want to compare prices on different websites.

Make an App Pair to Fit Your Needs

Multitasking isn’t just easier and more powerful on the Galaxy Z Fold2 – it’s customizable. Multi-Window Tray saves you time by allowing you to create presets for Multi-Active Window using App Pair with up to three of your favorite apps. Not only can you launch the apps at the same time, you can launch them in your preferred Multi-Active Window layout. So, if you like starting your day with a coffee while you view your schedule, check emails, and catch up on the latest news, you can do it all with the tap of a single button from the app tray. To save your favorite app combinations and layouts, select the option menu from the divider while in Multi-Active Window Mode.

Drag Here, Drop There

Whether you want to drag and drop a graph from Excel right into PowerPoint, or take an image from your gallery and drop it into a message to send a friend, the Galaxy Z Fold2 makes multitasking more seamless with drag and drop functionality between apps. While using Multi-Active Window, you can drag and drop images, tables, hyperlinks, text and other content between supported apps. So, if you’re writing a work email and need to attach an image, it’s as easy as dragging the image from the Gallery app into the email – no need to exit and relaunch the apps or fiddle with settings.

Share It as You See It, Without Cropping

Sharing screenshots from the Galaxy Z Fold2 is smooth and painless. When using the device in Multi-Active Window mode, Split Screen Capture takes an individual screenshot of every app open. So, when you’re sending an updated presentation slide to your team, you can quickly grab a screenshot, then drag and drop it to the messenger without having to crop, edit, or exit and re-open apps. Split Screen Capture provides a seamless, uninterrupted experience.

Q: Why did Samsung initially choose to collaborate with Thom Browne?

From the offset, the collaboration between Samsung and Thom Browne – two companies which possess distinct design identities in two very different industries – was a challenge for both parties. However, we believed from the beginning that we could draw upon the similarities between the worlds of fashion and technology to create a smartphone that introduced an entirely new design identity.

If you think about it, the identities of the Thom Browne brand and the Galaxy Z Fold2 are both strong and clear. Both stand out in a crowd – the Galaxy Z Fold2, with its one-of-a-kind form factor, and Thom Browne, with its signature designs. Together, we were able to create a brand-new identity. An identity that’s just as much a fusion of fashion and technology as it is a combination of past, present and future. The Thom Browne brand is so classic and timeless that this special edition, as futuristic as it is, would fit right in if it were released in the middle of the twentieth century. That’s what makes this partnership so strong.

Q: Looking back, did you expect that the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition would receive such an enthusiastic response?

For Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip represented entirely new ideas: a new form factor that folds up and down, and our first collaboration with the fashion house Thom Browne. I think this unexpected yet completely natural collaboration captured consumers’ hearts. Thom Browne went beyond the limits of traditional smartphone design to create a look that perfectly aligns with Samsung’s technological vision. Consumer response was incredible, leading to sellouts in Korea, Japan, the United States and China.

Q: What are some of the key benefits that come with foldable smartphone designs?

The Flip’s design is highly portable; it folds up and down, and you close it to end a call. The Fold’s design assures optimal usability, making it great for multitasking and enjoying immersive content. Both devices offer a new experience, but in terms of design, the Flip feels much different than anything smartphone users are used to.

The Flip is a device that invites curiosity and mystery. For this special edition, the entire exterior was designed in Thom Browne’s signature colors to express its unique design heritage. If the focus of the Flip is offering a compact and iconic design, then the focus of the Fold2 is providing a more immersive experience. An experience that not only includes a larger screen, but also a fully realized Thom Browne UX. Examples of the latter include the device’s use of the brand’s signature Four Bar pattern, which extends to areas like wallpapers – some of which change every day. This type of approach delivers new levels of value to consumers who embody the Thom Browne lifestyle.

Q: Could you expand on how you collaborated with Thom Browne for this edition?

The Galaxy Z Fold2 is an engineering wonder. The smartphone’s design creates a true sense of immersion, made possible by the combination of countless components moving seamlessly together. That precision is precisely what makes this device so magical.

Thom Browne is a brand that’s obsessed with precision, and I myself insist that each and every detail of a smartphone design, no matter how small, is absolutely perfect. When it comes to new products, the worlds of tech and fashion can vary widely in terms of design approaches, materials and manufacturing processes. Therefore, when preparing for our first collaboration, we needed to work together to understand our differences and express our opinions clearly.

By respecting and learning more about our unique design philosophies and identities, we were able to successfully develop all-new innovations together. Because we wanted this edition to be premium in every way, we had many departments work together to develop new solutions, and there was a constant flow of feedback.

Q: What are some of the standout features of this new edition?

The design of the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition is more premium and complete than other smartphone designs. To make the design even more striking, we enhanced the device’s back glass with the Thom Browne logo, and introduced an innovative technique that makes the brand’s signature stripe appear to have the texture of fabric. This creates a pleasing sense of unity that brings the whole design together.

In addition to enhancing the device’s exterior, we’ve also incorporated new lock screen options, along with dedicated photo filters, icons and more, that all come together to create a well-rounded UI. The device’s flip cover features Thom Browne’s signature pattern down its middle, while the practical back cover is completed with the brand’s iconic Four Bar pattern in white.

The smartphone’s accompanying Galaxy Watch3 features a matte hairline pattern that completes its modern and minimal design, while the Galaxy Buds Live feature a luxurious finish, along with a Thom Browne-designed leather case. In addition, each and every accessory, including the smartphone’s charger, cables and more, was enhanced with Thom Browne design elements to evoke a sense of unity.

Q: Did you have a particular type of user in mind when designing the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition?

When designing the device, we focused above all on offering users new lifestyle experiences. This required us to think beyond Thom Browne’s fashion expertise and Samsung’s innovative designs. I approached the design process by imagining a device that would allow users to experience the value of two distinct worlds. By delivering this, we’re enabling users to enjoy an all-new mobile experience, which combines the best of the worlds of technology and fashion.

The feedback of Galaxy Fold users is a key catalyst behind the Galaxy Z Fold2’s multitasking and productivity features. Availability

The Galaxy Z Fold2 will be available in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze, in around 40 markets including the U.S. and Korea, on September 18, 2020, with pre-orders from September 1, 2020 starting with select markets including the U.S. and Europe. Customized options will be available for users on Samsung.com in select markets²⁴ with four distinct colors for the hinge: Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red and Metallic Blue.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition will be available for pre-order beginning September 1, 2020 in select markets with general availability on September 25.
