As exhilarating and exciting as skiing can be, it’s sometimes necessary to stay connected. Fortunately, with the Gear S3, you can take calls, check messages and send quick replies with a twist of the bezel, without ever taking your smartphone out of your pocket. The Gear S3 LTE model, meanwhile, will allow you to connect even without your smartphone, so you can leave it back at the ski lodge.

Safety Features You Can Count On

Getting caught in bad weather is a big concern for winter sportsmen and women. The Gear S3 is equipped with an SOS feature that can be used in the case of a snowstorm or other emergency.

All it takes to activate the feature is a triple push of the button on the bottom right corner of the smartwatch. Once an SOS is triggered, the Gear S3 sends a call to your pre-programmed contact. Location tracking functionality then lets responders pinpoint your position in real time.

To incorporate these functions and features, designers and engineers had to embed numerous pieces and parts into the elegant 46mm x 49mm x 12.9mm body of the Gear S3. Here’s a closer look at some of the major components that make Samsung’s latest smartwatch “tick”.

1) Bezel and Front Case

• To navigate the Gear S3’s circular UX, users manipulate its two-way rotating bezel. This component consists of a bezel guide—located between the bezel and the front case—as well as ceramic balls and springs that enable its 24 detent bezel interface.

• Stainless steel 316L, the most commonly used material for analog watches, was selected as a primary material for the Gear S3. Simple modification molding and tempering finishes enhance the device’s ruggedness and reliability, while the front case’s accentuated Home and Back keys facilitate access and control of the Gear S3’s features.

• The entire front case of the Gear S3 functions as a radio frequency (RF) antenna, a component necessary for standalone 3G/LTE connectivity.*

2) Display

• The Gear S3 is the first model of the Gear S collection to feature Corning® Gorilla® Glass SR+, a material specifically designed for wearable devices to provide a tougher, more scratch-resistant display.

• The device’s 3-inch circular Super AMOLED display has a resolution of 360 x 360. Its 16 million colors, full color Always On Watch continuously shows the time rather than fading to black. The ambient light sensor helps to adjust the brightness of displayed information and works to automatically disable the Always On Watch when users can’t see the screen, such as when the watch is in a pocket or a bag. Users can opt to personalize their Always On Watch with customizable, interactive watch faces.

• Embedded Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology, which uses “magnetic” signals to establish a connection between the Gear S3 and a payment terminal, lets users make mobile payments through Samsung Pay.

3) Bracket

• The bracket, which protects the Gear S3’s components from shocks and impacts, contains a built-in speaker. This, along with the microphone on the mainboard, allows users to make calls, activate voice messaging and listen to their favorite music without earphones.

• Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies allow for multiple connectivity options to make it easier for users to listen to music, transfer health data or sync to other devices

• Equipped with a linear motor, the Gear S3 is capable of producing a variety of patterns and rhythms of vibrations for ultimate mobile customization.

4) Mainboard

• The Gear S3’s mainboard houses a number of sensors that enable the device’s fitness features. The built-in GPS permits users to accurately monitor their daily fitness activities while the barometer sensor allows them to measure altitude and atmospheric pressure, and detect sudden changes in weather. The heart rate monitor (HRM) sensor, meanwhile, ensures that users stay at their target rate for an optimized workout.

• The GPS also enables the device’s SOS feature. Once SOS is triggered, the Gear S3 sends a call to the user’s pre-programmed contact. Location tracking functionality then lets responders pinpoint the user’s position in real time.

• Standalone 3G/LTE connectivity, which allows users to make a call or stream music directly from the Gear S3, requires SIM card support. With the device’s One Number Service, the call recipient always sees the same phone number, whether the call is made from the Gear S3 or the user’s smartphone.*

• In addition to MST compatibility, the Gear S3 also supports Near Field Communication (NFC). Together, MST and NFC technologies allow consumers to make mobile payments simply and virtually anywhere.

• The Gear S3 is equipped with a dual core 1.0 GHz application processor (AP). Additionally, the device features 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory.

• A larger, longer-lasting 380mAh Li-ion battery, which has a typical usage of three to four days on a single charge, ensures that the Gear S3 works whenever users need it to. And, when it does need a battery boost, a 15-minute charge in its wireless charging cradle is all it takes to get around ten hours of wear time.**

5) Rear Case

• Fitted with a protective, anticorrosive material, the Gear S3 offers military grade durability and has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, which means the device is protected from dust and immersion in fresh water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

6) Band

• The Gear S3 frontier is outfitted with a silicon band while the Gear S3 classic model comes with a leather band. The Gear S3 also supports standard 22mm watch bands so that consumers can personalize their device to better fit their own style.

At initial launch, the Gear S3 will be available in South Korea and will roll out in additional markets worldwide including Australia, Dubai, France, Germany, Singapore, U.K., and U.S. starting on November 18. Timeless Design and Enhanced Standalone Convenience

LTE Connectivity

The Gear S3 classic is aimed at stylish 20-30 somethings who value function and practicality. A hipper, younger design with no frills was the approach for this version of the device. Added to that is the diverse range of wristbands that let trendsetters express themselves in their own unique way.

Exploring Details: From Size and Materials to an Always On Display

Recently, consumers are seeing smartwatches not as smart devices but as multi-purpose timepieces. As such, refinement was the key concept for the design of the Gear S3. The company undertook an exhaustive study of timepieces, surveyed a wide range of users and attempted to define the size and form factor of a watch that makes it just that, a watch.

Stainless steel 316L, the most commonly used material for watches, was selected for the Gear S3. Adding to its durable surface are simple modification molding and tempering finishes that enable for a device that is not only sophisticated but sturdy and reliable.

The circular UX, first introduced in the Gear S2, was once again applied to the Gear S3, showcasing a new direction in wearable UX design.

Like a master watchmaker carefully placing the hour and minute hands in place, the watch face of the Samsung Gear S3 has been carefully set in place. The near microscopic details of a watch piece have been painstakingly recreated digitally in the Gear S3 with added function that can only be realized in a digital environment such as weather updates, schedule reminders and a heart rate monitor.

Samsung Gear S3 is a product that takes after the heart of artisan watchmakers and their highly detailed craft while expanding further with the latest in digital technology. In doing so, the company was able to gather valuable insight into their skills and the age-old craft of assembling a classic timepiece.

“With every great iconic watch design, it’s all about three factors: proportion, tactile experience and choice,” Arpa noted. “These three things are what we focused on to create a smartwatch that looks and feels like a real watch.”

With Arpa’s help, Samsung was able to create a device that marries traditional professionalism and digital innovation. This rings true for both versions of the new smartwatch: the Gear S3 frontier, a rugged wearable that can withstand nature’s elements, and the Gear S3 classic, a luxurious digital timepiece.

Gear S3 frontier — A Smartwatch for Any Environment

The Gear S3 frontier was developed to fit into any environment, be it the wilderness or the boardroom. Its large bezel, hefty body and accentuated buttons convey both refinement and sturdiness. Small elevations around the face, and the screen’s slope and depression, for example, protect it from exterior shock.

Samsung also took care to ensure that each function of the new version could be easily accessed. Specially designed bezel knurlings and buttons make it easy to use, even when wearing ski gloves. Furthermore, in place of time markers, numerals were used to create a sportier aesthetic.

To resist the dust, mud and perspiration that often come along with outdoor activities, Samsung designers adopted a soft, lightweight strap that provides durability but also comfort.

Gear S3 classic—Enhanced Luxury

The Gear S3 classic boasts a more luxurious aesthetic, raising the bar in terms of detail and quality.

Taking a no-frills approach, Samsung designers paid great attention to the smallest of details, from the laser-marking techniques for the indices, to the watch crown to the minimalistic design of the in-body strap.

Many renditions, and numerous shapes and sizes were considered to achieve the perfect balance and proportion of a well-crafted watch. Samsung hid the stitches and selected more natural colors—olive green and navy blue—to make the device more gender neutral. Finally, the leather was tempered to look sophisticated yet reliable; the material is one that makes a statement without being ostentatious.

All-Around Refined Design and Craftsmanship

Refinement was a key concept for the designs of both versions of the Gear S3. Most prominent in its enhancements are the physical dimensions of the device itself—ones that were crafted to ensure that the product actually looked like a real watch.

After completing a survey of a wide range of users to whittle down the ideal proportions of a wristwatch, Samsung incorporated a larger watch face to better fit the wrists and preferences of users.

The Gear S3’s bezel interface was inspired by outdoor and dive watches. Adding a tactical experience to what is primarily a digital function, the new bezel has 24 steps that cover the spectrum of the Gear S3’s functions.

The rounded sharp edges of the case, the sunray brush finish on the bezel and the intricacies of the watch’s crown further demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to quality.

To better accommodate the circular face of the smartwatch, the interface was totally redesigned for the Gear S3. Added to this was the revision of the app sync engine to provide a more seamless integration of applications to the device.

The material of the device, a component that Arpa believes greatly contributes to the overall tactile experience, was also carefully considered. “In this specific case, I’m very proud to say we used 316L stainless steel, which is the same material used for the finest luxury watches in Switzerland,” he stated.

New materials, along with simple modification molding and tempering finishes, result in a design that is not only classic, but also reliable.

A Well-“Rounded” UX

The circular UX, which was well received by the masses when it was first introduced with the Gear S2, has undoubtedly become the distinguishing identity of the Gear series, redefining the user experience.

The new Gear S3 builds upon this foundation and takes advantage of its circular display and rotating bezel to provide advanced usability. Content on the Gear S3 scrolls around the periphery of the circular display while transitions between screens are smoother and more natural than before.

Also, the nearly microscopic details of an analog timepiece have been recreated and applied to the Gear S3’s watch face, along with added digital functions that offer unsurpassed convenience. Depth has been added to improve aesthetics, while widgets on both sides of the face connect seamlessly with the watch face itself. A wide variety of watch face options also enables ultimate personalization.

But the new Gear S3 isn’t just a smart device. It’s a wearable that complements a user’s lifestyle. After all, Arpa noted, “More important than any design or project is the human being that will interact with it.”

That’s why the device’s Always On Display has been improved upon. With a low energy setting, the smartwatch can now be on at all times, with more vibrancy and detail. Thanks to this new added function, a vast array of Always On Display designs are available so users can make their device truly their own.

Samsung introduced two new additions to its widely acclaimed smartwatch line at the Gear S3 Launch Event on August 31 at Berlin’s Tempodrom just ahead of IFA 2016.

The rugged Gear S3 frontier and the luxurious yet minimal Gear S3 classic redefine the smartwatch experience by injecting “real watch” value, both through designs firmly grounded in timeless watch aesthetics as well as new features powered by Samsung’s latest technological innovations.

The Samsung Gear S3 Launch Event was more experience-focused than ever before. It featured a new presentation format which saw some of the watch industry’s most distinguished experts engage in an interactive discussion to illustrate the new device, and the lengths Samsung went to combine cutting-edge technology with the looks, durability and functionality of a premium watch.

The conversation was kicked off by Younghee Lee, Samsung’s Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Mobile Communications Business, who emphasized the company’s drive to add new value to the smartwatch experience by creating pieces that are watches, first and foremost. Her speech was followed by a stellar holographic sequence in which beams of light painted a galaxy of stars above the circular stage that shifted and danced before coalescing to form a textured depiction of Samsung’s new flagship smartwatch.

The industry-spanning partnerships that yielded the Gear S3’s design were a major focus of the showcase, as explained by the event’s facilitator, Ariel Adams, editor-in-chief of aBlogtoWatch, the world’s leading luxury watch blog.

Adams introduced famed Swiss watch designer Yvan Arpa, who collaborated closely with Samsung to create the new pieces and elaborated on some of the refinements that were introduced. Prominent artist and industrial designer Arik Levy, who contributed watch face and band designs for the device, also appeared on stage, where he summed up the Gear S3 as a form of highly functional art.

Mark Notton, Head of Product Management of Samsung Electronics Europe, discussed some of the technological innovations introduced in the Gear S3, including an Always On Display, which greatly adds to the device’s “real watch” aesthetic. Other functions he touched on were its enhanced Samsung Pay functionality, standalone GPS and sensors that allow for improved usability, and expanded ecosystem of compatible apps. Also mentioned were the Gear S3’s bigger, longer-lasting battery which can provide three to four days of use on a single charge.

Upon the conclusion of the event, guests were invited to try on the new watches for themselves in the Experience Zone.

The new device is available in two versions: the Gear S3 frontier and the Gear S3 classic. Inspired by the active explorer, the Gear S3 frontier exudes a rugged outdoor look with durable materials that fuse form and function. The Gear S3 classic, meanwhile, pays homage to the minimalist, elegant styles embodied by traditional timepieces.

Gorilla Glass SR+ and IP68 certification enable the smartwatch to function in extreme environments, while a Full Color Always On Watch complements its analog aesthetic. Embedded MST technology lets users use Samsung Pay just about anywhere, making wallets a thing of the past.

A Real Watch Design

Both versions of Samsung’s newest smartwatch—the Gear S3 frontier, a well-built wearable that can withstand tough conditions, and the Gear S3 classic, a luxurious yet minimal timepiece—were designed to emulate the look and feel of a traditional premium watch down to the smallest details.

Following the trends of the latest watch designs, most prominent in the enhancements of the Gear S3 are the physical dimensions of the watch itself.

The bezel, buttons and overall hardware of the Gear S3 were accentuated to give the device a sturdier, more refined look, and to ensure that its functions and features are easier to access and control.

In addition to a new fit that allows for maximized comfort, everything from the angle and slope of the screen, slight elevations around the face and the way the bezel feels when turned have been fine-tuned. The knurling process (how watchmakers texturize the bezel, crowns and buttons to make the device more tactile and rugged) was also perfected. Even the Gear S3’s material—stainless steel 316L—adds to the device’s analog aesthetic.

The rounded sharp edges of the case and the sunray brush finish on the bezel illustrate the attention to detail and quality put into the form of the device. Extra care was taken in designing the crown of the watch to realize the ideal of a traditional timepiece.

Likewise, the Gear S3’s 16 million colors full-color Always On Display function gives the smartwatch a more traditional look, allowing for more realistic watch faces, dials and hands, including the new active second hand. Samsung also integrated standard 22 millimeter bands, so users can interchange them to personalize the Gear S3 to their liking.

But not all of the design enhancements were made strictly for aesthetic purposes. The bezel, for example, was improved to allow for better control of the Gear S3. Users can now quickly respond to calls or alarms with a simple twist, or rotate the bezel to set simple voice reminders.

Standalone Freedom

While the Gear S3 is the perfect partner for the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy Note7, its ability to function as a standalone device makes it even more powerful.

The Gear S2 helped paved the way for smartwatches to have standalone 3G connectivity, but the Gear S3 now supports LTE. Along with a built-in speaker and microphone, the smartwatch makes placing calls easy, and possible right from the wrist. And, whether users call from their smartphone or Gear S3, the receiver will see the same number, eliminating confusion on the other end of the line.

The Gear S3 also houses various sensors that work together to enhance users’ lifestyles. Included among them is the built-in GPS, which doesn’t require a phone to function. An altimeter, barometer and speedometer make the Gear S3 the ideal companion for those who enjoy the great outdoors or leisure activities.

With these features, users can measure the altitude on a mountain hike, predict changes in the weather, check out how fast they’re cycling down a hill, or even send a notification to family members with their exact location.

In addition, Gear S3 users can also take advantage of the device’s connectivity to stream music from apps like Spotify. Or, they can simply enjoy their own playlists, thanks to the device’s standalone music player.

Enhanced fitness features on the S Health app let users track a wider variety of activities on the Gear S3, such as workouts on a rowing machine or elliptical trainer. Social features like the 1:1 Steps challenge and Steps leaderboard add a fun, competitive element.

Other new features function to make the little things in life more convenient. Reminders lets users keep track of small tasks and to-dos such as picking up the dry cleaning by recording a simple voice input and setting the reminder time via the bezel.

Users can also download Samsung-recommended apps and watch faces* directly from the Gear S3 via a Wi-Fi or LTE connection, meaning they can now personalize their device faster, easier and without a smartphone connection.

On the Safe Side

To ensure that users remain out of harm’s way while taking advantage of all the features of the Gear S3, Samsung made sure to life proof the device to the max.

Because users wear it on their wrist, the Gear S3 can help them in emergencies more efficiently than a smartphone, which is usually in a bag or pocket when a crisis situation arises. When activated, a triple tap on the home key immediately sends a clear SOS call to the user’s contact of choice—either a friend or one of Samsung’s security partners such as ADT (US) or S1 (Korea). Location tracking then enables responders to locate the user’s position in real time via the Glympse solution.

Such security functions, paired with the Gear S3’s durability features, help to protect users no matter where they are—whether in the middle of a city, or the middle of the ocean. That’s because the Gear S3 is IP68 certified, meaning it is water and dust resistant. Furthermore, the display of the Gear S3 is made of Gorilla Glass SP+ to provide ultimate scratch resistance, not to mention a sharper, clearer screen.

A larger, longer-lasting battery (380mAh), which has a typical usage of three to four days, ensures that the Gear S3 is working when users need it to. And, when it does need a battery boost, a 15-minute charge in its cradle amounts to around ten hours of wear time. Even in the most extreme case, the device will work as a digital watch for up to ten hours with less than five percent battery life when the Power off Watch is activated.

An Expanded Ecosystem

With an improved battery life, users can now do even more with the Gear S3, like make a contactless payment.

Samsung Pay has been greatly improved with the Gear S3, as now, both NFC and MST technology are embedded into the device. This means that anywhere a credit card is accepted, the Gear S3 can be used, too, so users can leave their wallets behind when out for a jog or a coffee break.

In addition to Samsung Pay, more than 10,000 apps are now compatible with the Gear S3 and its Tizen operating system. From utilizing IoT services to car sharing to music streaming, users can do more than ever, right from their wrist.

Samsung Gear S3 is available in two bold designs to suit different users’ lifestyles: frontier and classic. Inspired by the active explorer, the Gear S3 frontier evokes a rugged outdoor look with an enduring style that blends form and function. The frontier was designed to perform in any setting or environment – whether business or leisure. The Gear S3 classic pays homage to the minimalist, elegant style found in the most iconic timepieces. The classic was designed with meticulous attention to detail – with its size and shape chosen to attain the same consistency and balance of a well-crafted luxury watch.

In a quest to uncover what truly defines a watch, Samsung drew inspiration from manufacturers around the globe, paying particular attention to the skills and craft of assembling a delicate, yet highly complex timepiece. Influenced by the craftsmanship of traditional watches, the Gear S3 was created based on intensive research and surveys from consumers, industry leaders and watch experts all around the world. Every feature, from the circular bezel to the premium finishing and buckles, has been reimagined to elicit the look of a classic timepiece. In addition to its sleek look, the Gear S3 meets IP68 standards for water resistance so consumers can get through their day, regardless of weather conditions. For the first time on the Gear series, the Gear S3 features Corning® Gorilla® Glass SR+, which is specifically designed for wearable devices to provide a tougher, more scratch resistant and crisp display.

The 16 million colors full-color Always On Watch and Super AMOLED technology further differentiates the Gear S3 from other smartwatches. The AOD always shows the time rather than automatically fading to black, embodying a sophisticated watch face that mimics the look and feel of luxury analog watch.

The Gear S3’s signature rotating bezel has been enhanced with new features. Without touching the screen, users can accept or reject a call or snooze an alarm. In addition, by writing or drawing on the display, messages will automatically convert to texts and emojis. Users can also create short reminders and to-do lists to manage even the most hectic schedules with the Reminders application.

The Gear S3 puts convenience at the flick of the wrist, allowing users to leave their smartphone behind when they don’t need it on-hand. The built-in GPS functionality enables users to accurately monitor their daily fitness activities while the Alti/barometer and Speedometer allow users to track everything from altitude and atmospheric pressure to sudden changes in weather, distance traveled and speed.

Never miss another phone call with LTE connection* making its smartwatch debut on the Gear S3 frontier. Additionally, with the built-in speaker, users can activate voice messaging and listen to their favorite tunes. With a battery that lasts up to four days on a single charge, users can enjoy their music, make calls and show off their stylish smartwatch longer.

Now Gear S3 users in select markets can use their smartwatch to make a purchase almost anywhere they can swipe or tap a card with Samsung Pay for Gear S3.* Samsung Pay, with Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and Near Field Communication (NFC) support, means users can easily register a credit or debit card and use it to make mobile payments. Samsung Pay slims down users’ wallets and makes payments accessible on their wrist.

The Gear S3 was designed with consumers’ safety in mind. In case of an emergency, users can activate the SOS and location tracking capabilities to alert family, friends and emergency professionals about crisis situations, even when their phone isn’t in-hand.

Consumers can access a diverse range of apps, including fitness, music, news, sports and travel apps – all optimized for the Gear lineup of devices including the Gear S2 and the Gear S3. Thanks to a special partnership with Arik Levy, renowned artist and industrial designer, Samsung will introduce artistic watch faces and strap designs. Arik Levy is best known for his sculptures – such as his signature Rock pieces, unique installations and limited-edition designs, all of which are rooted in his belief that “the world is about people, not objects.”

Arik Levy commented: “It was interesting and fun to collaborate with Samsung on creating unique and evolving watch face concepts and watch bands for the Gear S3. Inspired by my artwork, installations and sculptures, we created features that not only technology-savvy consumers will love but also those who place a high value on art, design, freedom of the mind and aesthetics.”

The modern watch faces and bands designed by Arik Levy will be introduced later this year through select channels.

Adding to the Tizen ecosystem, Samsung introduces the integration of BMW’s personal mobility companion with the new Gear S3 – helping users stay on time, in touch, and in control while further enhancing the connected automobile experience. With the BMW Connected app, users can get alerts when it’s time to leave for their next trip, check their fuel level, unlock their BMW and more – all directly from the Gear S3 watch face.

For the first time ever on a smartwatch, the Samsung Knox Tizen Wearable SDK will be available to third-parties, enabling management capabilities and the development of customized applications for Samsung’s wearable ecosystem. With the Samsung Knox security platform, the Gear S3 will enable broader enterprise business opportunities.
