Super Slow-mo increases the camera’s shutter speed to a blistering 960 fps (frames per second), and is capable of recording video that’s four times slower than any other slow-motion mobile technology. Samsung’s intelligence platform, Bixby, is deeply integrated into the Galaxy S9’s camera, and utilizes augmented reality and deep learning technologies to provide users with a wide range of helpful, real-time information about the world around them.

When the user points their camera at an object, Bixby recognizes what it’s looking at and instantly presents information related to that object overlaid on top of the image. This means that, for instance, a user on a business trip abroad would be able to utilize the Live Translation function under Bixby’s Text mode to instantly translate a menu or sign written in a foreign language, or even foreign currency, in real-time.

6. Snap Standout Shots with Dual Camera

The Galaxy S9+’s best-in-class Dual Camera features a pair of 12MP cameras – an F1.5 wide-angle lens with Super Speed Dual Pixel image sensor, and an F2.4 telephoto lens – as well as dual optical image stabilization (OIS) to ensure that photos are crystal clear even when the user has a shaky hand.

The camera’s Live Focus and Background Blur features offer users more creative control over their photos. Taking Samsung’s best-in-class camera technology to the next level, the Galaxy Note8 boasts two 12MP rear cameras – one F1.7 wide-angle lens with Dual Pixel technology and one F2.4 telephoto lens – that both utilize Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).

Refined Design

The Galaxy S8 builds on Samsung’s design heritage with a large Infinity Display, a bezel-less, dual-edge display that takes up more than 80 percent of the phone’s front screen. Visually obtrusive elements are minimal, resulting in more tangible screen space. An invisible Home button embedded underneath the screen functions just like a physical button while Recent and Back buttons are now customizable soft keys.

The Galaxy S8’s subtle curvature flows from the front of the device to the back to create a more ergonomic grip ideal for one-handed operation. The phone’s camera, fingerprint scanner and heart rate sensor have been incorporated on the back of the device in a way that minimizes protrusions, ensuring a sleek aesthetic at any angle.

The stunning Infinity Display of the Galaxy S8 is 18 percent larger than the display of the Galaxy S7, making for a noticeably more immersive viewing experience.

When watched in landscape mode, 21:9 movies fill the Galaxy S8’s 18.5:9 display, while the black bars above and below the picture are minimized, increasing the viewing area by 36 percent, compared to the Galaxy S7. This, along with the phone’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) Premium capabilities, enables users to see content exactly as the creator intended. Gaming experiences, too, are enhanced, as any game that supports 18.5:9 full screen mode is automatically optimized to fill up the entire screen.

The Infinity Display also makes it easier to see and do more from a single screen without having to scroll as often. Optimized for multi-window usability, multitasking is made easy, even when using the phone’s full keyboard. The Galaxy S8’s new Snap Window feature enhances productivity by allowing users to pin a specific area from a recent app to the top of the screen, and continue using the area below it.

In addition, the Infinity Display is protected with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 which is impervious against scratches and external impacts.

Great Photos, In a Snap

The Galaxy S8 builds on the Galaxy foundation with its advanced camera, which offers multi-frame image processing. With this technology, the camera takes multiple photos in rapid succession instead of just one, then selects the clearest image and uses the others to reduce the blur. This enhanced image processing ensures that shots taken when the subject is moving, in low light or when zoomed in are clear and vibrant.

The dual-pixel sensor technology, wide aperture and fast autofocus of the 12MP F1.7 rear camera work together to create beautiful photographs even in low-light conditions. The 8MP F1.7 front camera has been equipped with enhanced autofocus features and facial recognition technology that can recognize and track faces to provide clear, focused selfies, regardless of the distance between the user and the camera.

With an easy-to-use filter setting, users can enhance their photos by selecting from a variety of filters, including Auto Filter, which automatically selects one optimized for their photo. Animated stickers and stamps can also now be applied to images when taking photos, right from the native camera app. The camera’s UX has also been optimized for one-handed operation.

A New Way to Interact

Although Bixby, Samsung’s new intelligent interface, is continuously being developed, it was created to enhance the way people interact with their Galaxy S8.  The intuitive and comprehensive interface leverages contextual awareness to learn users’ habits and provide related information, and is easily activated with a press of its dedicated hardware button or by saying “Bixby.”

With its multimodal functionality, its Voice feature lets users control multiple apps simultaneously using voice and touch commands interchangeably. Bixby has the ability to control all settings and features of each service without affecting other tasks users might be working on.

Its Vision interface can detect what users are looking for and respond accordingly, making it easier to search for images similar to ones selected by the user, shop online, get information about landmarks, decode QR codes and even translate foreign text through the phone’s Camera. Bixby also ensures that users remember important events through its intelligent Reminder feature. All of Bixby’s features can be accessed through its Home screen, which displays a user’s most contextually relevant apps on a single screen.

Seamless Transition from the Smartphone to the PC

Samsung DeX is a new service that lets users use their Galaxy S8 as they would a desktop by providing a seamless, secure mobile-to-PC transition. With DeX, users can conveniently access apps, browse the web, send messages and more directly from their phone on a larger display without having to carry multiple devices or transfer data.

DeX supports keyboard and mouse gestures, thus providing the effortless usability of a PC. Furthermore, with the ability to quickly shift between windows and adjust window size with ease, users can multitask more efficiently.

Samsung DeX helps to maximize productivity with intuitive applications such as Samsung Browser, MyFiles, Gallery and Samsung e-mail. DeX is also compatible with the Microsoft Office and Adobe mobile app suite, which allows complete desktop-like functionality previously unavailable from a mobile device. In addition, beginning in the first half of 2017, customers will be able to use VDI to remotely use Windows OS as they would on a desktop.

All Eyes on Security

The Galaxy S8 provides strengthened security features through the integration of Samsung’s trusted Knox security platform and a combination of new and enhanced biometric technologies.

The Galaxy S8’s highly secure iris scanner is fast, accurate and touch-free, making user verification easier than ever. Adding to the device’s security features are Samsung’s familiar fingerprint scanning and new facial recognition capabilities.

When it comes to football, Europe is in a league of its own. And with Family Hub’s TV mirroring function, users can quickly and easily keep an eye on the big match, or their favorite TV programs, while they cook.

A Real Watch Design

Both versions of Samsung’s newest smartwatch—the Gear S3 frontier, a well-built wearable that can withstand tough conditions, and the Gear S3 classic, a luxurious yet minimal timepiece—were designed to emulate the look and feel of a traditional premium watch down to the smallest details.

Following the trends of the latest watch designs, most prominent in the enhancements of the Gear S3 are the physical dimensions of the watch itself.

The bezel, buttons and overall hardware of the Gear S3 were accentuated to give the device a sturdier, more refined look, and to ensure that its functions and features are easier to access and control.

In addition to a new fit that allows for maximized comfort, everything from the angle and slope of the screen, slight elevations around the face and the way the bezel feels when turned have been fine-tuned. The knurling process (how watchmakers texturize the bezel, crowns and buttons to make the device more tactile and rugged) was also perfected. Even the Gear S3’s material—stainless steel 316L—adds to the device’s analog aesthetic.

The rounded sharp edges of the case and the sunray brush finish on the bezel illustrate the attention to detail and quality put into the form of the device. Extra care was taken in designing the crown of the watch to realize the ideal of a traditional timepiece.

Likewise, the Gear S3’s 16 million colors full-color Always On Display function gives the smartwatch a more traditional look, allowing for more realistic watch faces, dials and hands, including the new active second hand. Samsung also integrated standard 22 millimeter bands, so users can interchange them to personalize the Gear S3 to their liking.

But not all of the design enhancements were made strictly for aesthetic purposes. The bezel, for example, was improved to allow for better control of the Gear S3. Users can now quickly respond to calls or alarms with a simple twist, or rotate the bezel to set simple voice reminders.

Standalone Freedom

While the Gear S3 is the perfect partner for the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy Note7, its ability to function as a standalone device makes it even more powerful.

The Gear S2 helped paved the way for smartwatches to have standalone 3G connectivity, but the Gear S3 now supports LTE. Along with a built-in speaker and microphone, the smartwatch makes placing calls easy, and possible right from the wrist. And, whether users call from their smartphone or Gear S3, the receiver will see the same number, eliminating confusion on the other end of the line.

The Gear S3 also houses various sensors that work together to enhance users’ lifestyles. Included among them is the built-in GPS, which doesn’t require a phone to function. An altimeter, barometer and speedometer make the Gear S3 the ideal companion for those who enjoy the great outdoors or leisure activities.

With these features, users can measure the altitude on a mountain hike, predict changes in the weather, check out how fast they’re cycling down a hill, or even send a notification to family members with their exact location.

In addition, Gear S3 users can also take advantage of the device’s connectivity to stream music from apps like Spotify. Or, they can simply enjoy their own playlists, thanks to the device’s standalone music player.

Enhanced fitness features on the S Health app let users track a wider variety of activities on the Gear S3, such as workouts on a rowing machine or elliptical trainer. Social features like the 1:1 Steps challenge and Steps leaderboard add a fun, competitive element.

Other new features function to make the little things in life more convenient. Reminders lets users keep track of small tasks and to-dos such as picking up the dry cleaning by recording a simple voice input and setting the reminder time via the bezel.

Users can also download Samsung-recommended apps and watch faces* directly from the Gear S3 via a Wi-Fi or LTE connection, meaning they can now personalize their device faster, easier and without a smartphone connection.

On the Safe Side

To ensure that users remain out of harm’s way while taking advantage of all the features of the Gear S3, Samsung made sure to life proof the device to the max.

Because users wear it on their wrist, the Gear S3 can help them in emergencies more efficiently than a smartphone, which is usually in a bag or pocket when a crisis situation arises. When activated, a triple tap on the home key immediately sends a clear SOS call to the user’s contact of choice—either a friend or one of Samsung’s security partners such as ADT (US) or S1 (Korea). Location tracking then enables responders to locate the user’s position in real time via the Glympse solution.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have been certified with an IP68 rating, the premium standard of protection against water and dust. For people who live life on the go—working, traveling and playing in all sorts of locations and environments—this advancement is most welcomed, letting them enjoy the sleek, advanced design of Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones, without the inconvenience of a bulky additional case.

What the IP68 Standard Means

The International Electrotechnical Commission measures the degree of protection provided by enclosures, or “IP code.” IP68 means that a device must be completely dust tight, and protected against water to a maximum of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

For the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, now the entire device is completely water and dust resistant, even the open connection slots, like for the charger and headphones. Previous Galaxy devices required a cap to cover the USB slot, battery cover and other openings, to shield them from water and dust. But that additional cover caused some complaints from consumers about the added bulk and the inconvenience of attaching and detaching the cover when charging and transfering data.

New Materials to Protect Openings and Parts

Samsung took that feedback to heart when creating the new Galaxy flagship smartphones. It changed the materials used on the external connections, like the headphone jack and UBS charging terminal, switching to anticorrosive materials like nickel and platinum.

To get a cap-less design, the new Galaxy models also used a new type of water resistance technology developed by Samsung that prevents gaps between the product and the case, eliminating the need for a protective cover. The result was a phone with slimmer design, with integrated batteries to further improve performance and efficiency.

The latest Galaxy models are completely watertight in the level of IP68, protecting not only the exposed exterior but the entire structure of the smartphone. For instance, rubber is now used for attaching individual parts, including the USB charging terminal, earphone jack, and SIM card tray, to prevent water from entering the device.

The power cable connector was designed with extra care, as water leakage there could cause a short circuit when connected to the USB terminal, but the new devices now use a mechanism to identify this dangerous situation and cut off the power.

An exclusive type of water protective tape has been applied to the front and rear glass and other parts of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, while the use of anticorrosive materials and a corrosion-preventing coating for exposed parts on the exterior ensure these Galaxy smartphones are completely protected from water.

The microphone needs to be able to receive sound clearly, so it is protected with portable electronics vents, which allows for a good flow of air and the outflow of humidity to prevent moisture from entering the device.

Improving Processes to Get Certification

Even with all of those advancements in the latest Galaxy models, getting the demanding IP68 certification required improved process controls, including for the management of individual parts, the systemization of the assembly process and thorough quality control.

Finally, due to those many advances, improvements and changes made throughout the development process, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge received IP68 certification. It required relentless efforts from Samsung to make the innovations necessary to earn that rating, but the benefits of having devices well protected from dust and water made it all worthwhile.
