A vacuum cleaner is an everyday tool that is intimately intertwined with our daily lives, and a tool that would at times require strength or sensitivity depending on user preferences and needs. The Samsung POWERstick PRO cordless vacuum provides expanded experiences in both cleaning time and everyday use, redefining the overarching concept of what it means to be a vacuum cleaner.

Innovations such as the ergonomic handle and Dual Action Brush add comfort and convenience to cleaning, while the POWERstick PRO’s refined red-and-aluminum aesthetic seamlessly integrates with a wide range of interiors. Let’s take a closer look at how Samsung Electronics optimized the vacuum’s design to redefine a complete cleaning solution.

Ergonomic Joint Structure

Certain movements that you make while cleaning, such as bending forward or twisting your wrist, can cause aches and fatigue. The POWERstick PRO’s Flex Handle was designed to alleviate these issues, removing the need for users to twist and bend to clean in tight spaces by making the vacuum itself flexible. The Flex Handle folds up to 50 degrees at the touch of a button, which makes maneuvering the vacuum effortless and allows users to maintain proper posture when cleaning their home.

A Meticulously Designed Grip

When holding the vacuum, users will find that the curvature of the handle ensures a natural and snug grip, and its weight distributes evenly – adding ease to use, and providing optimal stability. The suction control button is placed directly under the index finger position, and the left side of the handle has a Flex Unlock button so users can comfortably control the product with just one hand.

Stable Self-Standing

The vacuum’s complementing accessories, including the pipe attachment, have also been designed with stability in mind. Because the pipe is capable of standing on its own when detached, users do not need to bend down when swapping accessories.

The Visible Power of the Dual Action Brush

A common issue with conventional vacuums is that, because their brushes only rotate forward, when the user pulls their vacuum toward them, the brush’s backward motion results in dirt being flicked away. The Samsung POWERstick PRO features two brushes that rotate in opposite directions – eliminating this problem, and enhancing the vacuum’s performance at the same time.

A Battery for Powerful Usability

Battery life is crucial for wireless vacuum cleaners. The POWERstick PRO is equipped with a 32.4V large capacity battery that boasts 150W suction performance for a maximum duration of 80 minutes*. Keeping the option of detaching and replacing exhausted batteries in mind, the product is designed so that the battery compartment is placed in the handle portion for users to enjoy the product’s powerful prowess without any restrictions to time.

The POWERstick PRO is the product of Samsung’s extensive efforts to identify and design innovative solutions for common inconveniences that come with cleaning. By setting new standards in terms of design, power and ease of use, Samsung hopes that the act of cleaning will transform from a burdensome labor to an enjoyable experience that brings fresh vigor and comfort to your spaces.

How Your Fridge Works

From the primitive ice buckets of yesteryear to the modern day refrigerator, the technology we use to keep our food cool has evolved. Yet, even though the methods have changed over the years, the basic principles of cooling have been the same for centuries and we have always used a cooling substance and some form of insulation.

Whereas early systems might have used ice as the cooling substance, today we use chemical refrigerants. Refrigerants work by moving through the refrigeration cycle changing from gas to liquid and back again. Early refrigerants posed risks but the R-134a and R-600a refrigerants used today are non-corrosive, non-toxic, low cost, and environmentally friendly.

Insulation is another important element of a fridge as it keeps the warm air outside from penetrating the cool atmosphere of the fridge. In times past, the insulation was simply the ice bucket itself, or the stone wall of an archaic ice house. Now, a more sophisticated type of insulation is used whereby a urethane foam and VIP (Vacuum Insulation Panel) maintain the temperature of a refrigerator.

At its most basic, a refrigerator consists of four main parts that together work their magic to produce refrigeration.

Refrigerant in the form of liquid or gas circulates in the refrigeration cycle successively for cooling action

• Compressor: The compressor circulates the refrigerant by converting it between a low-temperature, low-pressure gas to a high-temperature, high pressure gas

• Condenser: The condenser transforms the high-temperature, high-pressure gas to a room-temperature high pressure liquid by discharging radiation heat

• Capillary tube: The capillary tube drops refrigerant’s pressure for next cooling action by passing it through a narrow tube with high resistance – the room-temperature, high-pressure liquid becomes a low-pressure, low-temperature two-phase fluid

• Evaporator: The refrigerant which is decompressed by the capillary tube evaporates at low temperature when entering the evaporator. The evaporator cools the fridge and freezer by absorbing heat from the food, which turns liquid into gas

New Wave of Fridge Tech: Twin Cooling PlusTM

Samsung is reinventing the fridge by developing Twin Cooling PlusTM technology, first introduced in 1995. The Samsung Twin Cooling PlusTM adds new levels of convenience and innovation with its two evaporators that manage the fridge and freezer space separately to minimize temperature fluctuation. This makes it possible to control optimal humidity and temperature because moisture in the fridge can remain separate from freezer. A higher humidity up to 70% preserves food for longer so this is a welcome addition that minimizes food wastage.

Additionally, in conventional – single evaporator – systems, odors from the fridge can be permeated to foods in the freezer because air from the two compartments is interconnected. Twin Cooling PlusTM fridges, however, prevent mixed odors that taint the ice you store in the freezer because twin cooling systems prevent air transition between the two compartments.

The comparison between mono cooling with single evaporator (left) and Twin Cooling Plus TM with two evaporators (right)

Fridge flexibility is another bonus that users can make use of with Twin Cooling PlusTM . It offers a range of options that enable users to customize their fridge in a way that best suits them. They can even switch off portions of their fridges to save energy. This is done through the separate cooling evaporators for the fridge and freezer that enables users to choose from five modes of operation: regular mode, energy saving mode, vacation mode, fridge max mode, and mini fridge mode.

A Growing Range

With Twin Cooling PlusTM technology now an established feature in Samsung fridges, the range of available products has grown to accommodate the different consumer needs. There’s the side by side refrigerators, the bottom mount fridges and top mount fridges – all with their unique benefits and features.

Then there’s the T-type refrigerator – a world first Samsung. It’s the only Triple Cooling and dual compressor fridge in the world. Each zone can be controlled independently and maintain optimal high humidity levels.

The fridge has come a long way from the early days of inefficient appliance with limited capabilities. Samsung is now at the forefront of rethinking the fridge. As a result, it will get more efficient, offer better insulation, more space and it will get smarter. The fridge no longer needs to be forgotten about – it can be embraced and interacted with in new ways.

Along with dirt, dust and food crumbs, hair is one of the most commonly vacuumed items. But unlike smaller bits of debris, hair can cause major headaches for consumers and the vacuum itself. In the process of being swept up, loose hairs become tangled. As anyone who has ever tried to vacuum a rug or carpet can attest, tangled hair is difficult to clean out of a vacuum dustbin (and not to mention, gross).

But that’s not the only problem – these hairballs can get caught in the brush or grille of the dustbin and cause the vacuum to lose suction power. In other words, hairs can make the whole cleaning process more time consuming and less effective.

Not surprisingly, many companies are working to solve this very common consumer complaint. Most of them focus on the brush, the first point of contact, to find a way to keep hairs tangle-free. Samsung, also, came up with an Anti-Tangle tool for its vacuum brushes.

Usually, when hairs are picked up, some end up wrapped around the rotating brush, making it less effective. To solve this problem, Samsung engineers created a brush made out of rubber, which bounces off dust from the surface, making it easier for the vacuum to pick up dust. They also designed the brush to adhere to the floor and evenly distribute suction power, and with the brush’s new air-flow structure, dirt, dust and hair are directed straight into the dustbin without clogging. But that’s not all.

The Anti-Tangle Turbine

Dongjin Cho, an engineer at Samsung’s Kitchen & Cleaning Advanced R&D Lab, was looking at a gross fist of hair stuck around the protruding grille of the dustbin. While the majority of his teammates were fixated on building a better brush, he had decided to dedicate an hour every day to take a step back from his daily job, take a holistic approach, and hopefully find some inspiration. What if he could eliminate these dustbin-generated hairballs? Or rather, how could he eliminate them? It was then that he remembered an article about aerodynamics of a turbine engine for airplanes.

When you want to untangle unwanted pieces of hair, you can physically scrape them off the grille, but you could also blow wind to prevent them from being there in the first place. Cho designed a turbine to blow air in the opposite direction of the overall airflow.

The genius thing about it? This turbine wouldn’t need a separate, dedicated motor. The suction power from a vacuum motor, at 35,000 RPM, would generate a wind strong enough to power a turbine, which with a set of wings to channel outer air outward, blowing away the hair and dust that previously would have clogged the grille. The grille would be flat, instead of sticking out, so that it wouldn’t wind up excess hair in the process. The new turbine, leveraging the centrifugal force – similar to the force of a tornado – already created by the cyclone system would now also help power an anti-tangle gust.

With a conventional grille, the air fan rotates and creates suction power, which can cause dust and hair to get stuck in the grille. With the anti-tangle turbine grille, there is a second fan that creates air flow in the reverse direction and therefore pushes away dirt and debris, including hair, and prevents it from being sucked into the grille or the dustbin.

The anti-tangle turbine, after many divergents, was engineered to generate more than 10,000 spins per minute. Though a faster spin would have increased efficiency, the lower-engineered RPM helped reduce the level of noise. That means debris, including hair, wouldn’t get trapped in the cyclone system or end up sticking to the turbine grille without creating an overwhelming buzz.

All in all it’s a simple everyday solution, less than an inch-thick, which would eliminate clogged hair in the dustbin, ultimately improving cleaning efficiency.

Tangled hair has long made cleaning unnecessarily difficult, but the solution has remained elusive. Samsung’s engineers took a different approach. In taking a step back to think creatively about the problem as a whole, a self-directed project, Samsung’s Anti-Tangle Turbine and Anti-Tangle Tool were born. The innovative solutions – for both the brush and the grill of the dustbin – deliver a powerful vacuum that’s more convenient and more effective.

Can you imagine cleaning your carpets without a vacuum? For centuries, people had to manually beat and sweep their rugs – a time and labor intensive process. When the early vacuums came along at the start of the 1900s, the large machines weren’t much better. Some weighed as much as 100 pounds!

Without question, there was great need for high-powered, but maneuverable, cleaning devices.

About 30 years later that need was finally fulfilled, when modern vacuuming revolutionized the cleaning process. Since then, the technology has continued to evolve and advance – vacuums have not only gotten smaller, more powerful and automated, but they have also diversified to better meet people’s unique cleaning needs.

Today, there are four basic vacuum types: the canister, an upright vacuum, the handy & stick and the robot. The four varieties have distinctive pros and cons, but each performs the same function through the same basic process.

At the most basic level, a vacuum works by putting in energy, labor and time. The output is then a hygienic and clean space or surface. But, of course, there’s more to that basic equation than meets the eye.

So what exactly is inside your vacuum that makes it work?

The Suction Motor. The first component is one of the most important parts. The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan. The impeller rotates at an incredibly high speed of about 30,000 to 35,000 RPM. A suction motor’s power is measured by multiplying the rate of air flow and the vacuum pressure, which induces air flow from the brush through the hose.

Brush. On most modern vacuums, the brush is actually one of many different nozzles, each specifically designed to clean a certain place, surface, room or kind of debris. Vacuuming with the right tool can save significant amounts of time and effort.

Dust Collector. There are two kinds of dust collectors – one uses a bag, the other does not require bags. A vacuum with a dust bag tends to be light, but the user has to buy and replace the bags at certain intervals. The so-called “bagless” collectors can be further divided into the single cyclone type and multi cyclone type. The single cyclone collector is a bit heavier than a dust bag vacuum, but it sustains suction power longer without changing a bag. The multi cyclone type, on the other hand, is heavier and has more complicated structure inside, but maintains its suction power longer than single cyclone.

Exhaust Filter. A vacuum’s filtration system has three distinct stages. During the first stage, large dust particles that measure more than 10 micron are separated by either a vacuum bag or bagless cyclone. In the second stage, dust sized from 0.3 to 1 micron are filtered out by a micro filter. And finally, the fine dust or carbon powder are captured by the exhaust filer, allowing clean air to pass out of the vacuum. When the filter is working properly, the vacuum will emit exclusively clean air without dust emission.

So how does it all work together?

When the four parts are put together, the process is simple. Dust and dirt are drawn up via either a brush or another appropriate nozzle through the pipe/hose and into the dust collector. This process is powered by the suction motor and all air is filtered through the exhaust filter to keep debris in the vacuum, while expelling only clean air.

At Samsung, we have spent the last 32 years looking for ways to make that process better for our customers. Since our very first vacuum, the Samsung Canister, was released, we have been continually innovating to make the highest quality vacuums that are faster, more powerful and more convenient.

You’re familiar with the situation. You return from the grocery store with bags full of goods but then find out there isn’t enough space in the fridge to hold everything. Try as you might to pull in all your Tetris skills to rearrange your food, you usually find yourself wishing for extra space.

It’s a dilemma that has two options. One choice is to buy fewer items in the weekly shop and then make more trips to the local store throughout the week. But that’s inefficient, and ends up costing more in the long run. The other option is to buy a bigger fridge. The only problem there is the space in the kitchen limits your ability to buy bigger white goods.

The solution that makes the most sense is to opt for a bigger fridge that has the same footprint as your old one. Impossible? No, this is actually an issue refrigerator engineers have been tackling for quite some time.

Samsung SpaceMax Technology

SpaceMax technology is the sum of solutions Samsung engineers have found. One way Samsung works to offer more capacity than the average fridge is by being smarter with the insulation. The insulation in SpaceMax fridges is thinner but efficient.

The technology first made an appearance in Samsung’s 2008 refrigerators developed under project name Guggenheim. The application of thinner insulation helped increase the capacity by an additional 100 litres. Proving its impact on the market, this model is still on sale eight years on.

To get the correct formula for success, it requires an incredible feat in optimization. There’s a need to consider both capacity and energy. For instance, you cannot only make the wall thinner for expanded capacity. Similarly, you can’t just make the walls thicker to achieve better energy efficiency. You have to consider both factors rationally.

SpaceMax works through high efficiency poly-urethane (PU) foam insulation and Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP) working in tandem to increase capacity without compromising on insulation. The results are clear. The freezer wall has gone from 60mm to 55mm, and the fridge wall 45mm to 30mm. The freezer door and fridge door have both slimmed down by 20~25mm and 5~10mm respectively.

Poly-Urethane Foam Insulation with Smaller Cells

Let’s take a closer look at the high efficiency foaming technology used in the insulation. Urethane is a well-known material that fills up the inner wall of the fridge. It’s used in both commercial and general fridges. With an innovative advancement in creating a poly-urethane layer, Samsung was able to decrease the cell size from 200-300㎛ to 100-150㎛. This helped reduce thermal conductivity, which in result improves insulation efficiency by 6.5%.

Vacuum, Arguably the Best Solution for Insulation

While the PU foam layer became better at cutting of heat radiation, Samsung wanted to do more. That’s where the vacuum insulation panel comes in.

A vacuum state, by definition, eliminates matters that conduct heat. (That’s why many thermal bottles have a vacuum layer.) While it would be structurally and economically challenging to build a whole refrigerator wall that is in a vacuum state, Samsung engineers still found a way to add vacuum panels to cut off heat conduction. If you were to dismantle your Samsung refrigerator wall, you would find the panels on the outermost layer of the insulation – right under the surface material, inwardly sealed off by the PU foam.

Although the exact numbers vary between different models, the rule of thumb is that if the thickness of insulation decreases by 1mm, the capacity increases by 10 liters. Continued breakthroughs have meant that average capacity of our fridges has grown over the years. In the 1990s, capacity sat between 200 and 300 liters. By 2014, that figure was 980 liters. Every millimeter counts in the challenge to increase fridge space. And if it means your groceries can slide in with ease, the SpaceMax innovation is worthwhile.

Samsung Electronics once again ranks at the top for customer satisfaction in several segments of J.D. Power’s 2016 Kitchen Appliance Satisfaction Study and 2016 Laundry Appliance Satisfaction Study. It is the third consecutive year for Samsung to receive the highest number of segment honors in the study.

Founded in the United States in 1968, J.D. Power is the world’s leading authority on customer satisfaction in automobiles, laundry and kitchen appliances, health care, and numerous other industries. The company surveys thousands of recent appliance purchasers every year, measuring satisfaction across six factors: performance and reliability, ease of use, features, styling/appearance, price, and warranty.

On July 19th, J.D. Power announced its 2016 study results, with Samsung ranking highest in customer satisfaction across six segments, including front-load washers, top-load washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, freestanding ranges, and side-by-side refrigerators. It is the third consecutive year for Samsung to win the highest number of segment awards among the surveyed companies, beating last year’s highest ranking in 4 segments.

Samsung is also the first in the industry to receive the highest scores for two years in a row in the laundry segments, which include front-load washers, top-load washers, and dryers, clearly demonstrating the world-class performance of its products.

Samsung earned a score of 857 for its front-load washers, which is well above the segment average of 829, enabling it to maintain its top position for the third consecutive year while outperforming all other manufacturers in both top-load washer and dryer segments by over 30 points for the second consecutive year.

Additionally, Samsung ranked highest among 14 brands in the dishwasher segment for the first time, with a score of 837, which is 30 points higher than the segment average of 807.

These strong outcomes demonstrate Samsung’s positioning and reputation for satisfaction and reliability in the eyes of American consumers. J.D. Power specifically mentioned Samsung’s strong performance in terms of both styling/appearance and features and performance.

“Continued recognition from J.D.
“As the ultimate multi-tasking couple, Kristen and Dax are the perfect pair to help launch Samsung’s home appliance products this year,” said Katie Cheng, Vice President Home Appliance Marketing at Samsung. “With busy lives, young kids and a home to run, they embody millions of other families looking for new ways to manage their lives and stay connected to one another. Our kitchen and laundry appliances are built to deliver innovations that are meaningful and solve real-life challenges.”

The first ad launching this week is a 60-second spot showcasing Samsung’s Family Hub, which began airing May 9. Three 30-second spots – one each for the Family Hub, AddWash and activewash – will round out the rest of the TV ad campaign.

Samsung’s partnership with Kristen and Dax stretches back to 2014 and has spanned multiple product categories for the brand. This is the couple’s second year appearing in Samsung home appliance TV spots, following a highly successful campaign in 2015 for kitchen, laundry and cleaning products.

“We’ve worked with Samsung for several years now and are always excited to see what products they come up with next. Their new line of 2016 appliances is incredible,” said Kristen Bell. “The Family Hub is fantastic – the way it lets us keep track of our schedules, share photos and even put up our kid’s artwork means we can always keep in touch. Being able to look at your phone while you’re at the grocery store and seeing the inside of your fridge to see what you need saves time and makes everything easier.”

TV Ads are Part of Broad Integrated Marketing Campaign

The new home appliance marketing campaign includes an original digital animated film which served as a pre-amble for the overall creative campaign. The digital short film spotlights the Family Hub’s innovative camera feature, which lets consumers view what’s inside their refrigerator from an app on their smartphone. With a humorous slant, the animated short takes a look at what happens inside the fridge when the door closes. The digital film and related digital content will be featured in various forms via in-cinema placements, digital media units, and on brand and influencer social channels.

Additional creative campaign elements beyond TV spots and high-impact print ads include online videos highlighting key Family Hub features and a unique integration with Bon Appetit magazine.

Samsung Electronics, a global leader in home appliance innovations, announced two significant additions to its laundry lineup for 2016, both of which feature intuitive and clever design changes that translate into big benefits for consumers. These new products showcase simple, yet truly practical innovations that change the way consumers look at cleaning. Samsung will debut these innovations – alongside its other groundbreaking home appliance introductions – at the CES 2016 from Jan. 6-9, 2016.

“Samsung’s focus is on marrying beautiful design and practical innovation to create appliances that help consumers be more efficient. Taking note of the way consumers tackle cleaning in their home, we set out to create simple yet meaningful solutions to address obstacles they often just accept as part of their routines,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “Our two latest washers reflect Samsung’s commitment to infusing refined style, thoughtful innovations and unmatched performance into everything we do.”

Making the Washing Machine Work on Your Schedule

Samsung recognizes that in the rush to get laundry done on a frenzied weeknight or during a crazy weekend, a stray sock may simply get overlooked in the race to get everything else done – so Samsung’s simple, practical response to that is to add the industry’s first “AddWash” door to its front load washer. The Samsung Front Load Washer with AddWash has a distinctive access door that makes it convenient to add any item such as a piece of forgotten laundry or extra detergent in mid-cycle without needing to drain the washer and open the main washer door.

With the world’s largest 5.0 cu. ft. capacity that can handle 3.6 baskets of laundry in a single load built into a standard 27-inch washing machine, the Samsung Front Load Washer with AddWash easily stacks up against any machine on the market when it comes to getting more laundry done, faster.

Beyond that, the time-saving and high-performance washer makes sure you get the clean you need in as little time as possible. From gently caring for delicate fabrics, to advanced technologies that make detergent work harder, to a full load washed in as little as 30 minutes, Samsung’s Front Load Washer with AddWash can easily keep up with your family’s toughest laundry tasks.

Available Spring 2016, Samsung Front Load Washer with AddWash (model WF50K7500AV) debuts in Samsung’s new and sleek black stainless steel finish.

A Seamless, Clean Look for Your Washing Machine

Samsung takes its revolutionary activewash Top Load Washer to the next level by introducing a completely new Mid Control design, putting the washer’s entire control panel flat and within easy reach on top of the machine. This stunningly sleek and contemporary design is as innovative as the cleaning technology inside. In addition to its more optimal positioning, the Mid Control Panel offers a new, intuitive, digital touchscreen control panel that is seamlessly built into the lid.

In the Samsung activewash Top Load Washer with Mid Control, the built-in activewash sink is larger, and deeper, creating a more optimized pre-treatment space. You can easily pre-treat and pre-soak your clothes with a water jet and gentle scrubbing surface and then pour the laundry and water directly into the washing machine drum for the wash cycle.

Samsung’s Super Speed technology keeps you on schedule by shortening the wash cycle to as little as 30 minutes (up to 50% faster than other machines) without sacrificing performance. And its Innovative Smart Care technology and VRT® Vibration Reduction Technology complete the picture of a beautifully designed washer that is the perfect ergonomic blend of power, performance, design and environmental sensitivity.

Close attention has been paid to the washer’s ecological impact. Although equipped with 5.0 cu. ft. of high performance capacity, the Samsung activewash Top Load Washer with Mid Control operates like a much smaller machine from an environmental standpoint with a number of settings that minimize water and temperature usage. Samsung leads the industry among top loaders in kilowatt/year reduced power consumption and Water Factor (WF), the key measures for washer efficiency as rated by the Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR® program. And this washer is ENERGY STAR Tier 1 certified.

Available Spring 2016, the Samsung activewash Top Loader Washer with Mid Control (model WA50K8600/AV) will be offered in a black stainless steel finish with sleek chrome detailing around the door lid. A matching dryer with the same Mid Control Panel design will also be available.

Powering Up with New Cleaning Innovations

In addition to Samsung’s existing POWERbot VR9000 and POWERbot Essential Robotic Vacuums, Samsung is dedicated to enhancing the robotic vacuum market with two new additions at the CES 2016: POWERbot Turbo and POWERbot Essential Wi-Fi.

Now with 70 times more powerful suction than the leading robotic vacuum brand , Samsung’s POWERbot Turbo Robotic Vacuum is a reliable cleaning partner at home. Equipped with Smart Control Wi-Fi connectivity, the vacuum enables consumers to control the movement of the vacuum remotely using their smartphone. The “Select & Go” feature creates a virtual map of the entire home on your smartphone app, with each room that can be named individually. It then lets you pick specific areas or rooms in the home that may need cleaning. Simply select a room and the vacuum will make its way over there. With an enhanced digital mapping system that can literally “see” its way around your home, Samsung’s new robot vacuum delivers the ultimate clean, all without lifting a finger.

The POWERbot Essential Wi-Fi Robotic Vacuum provides 10 times more suction than the leading robotic vacuum brand and is also equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities so you can easily schedule specific cleaning times or turn the vacuum on/off.

Both robotic vacuums feature Visionary Mapping Plus System, with an onboard digital camera and high performance sensors that detect its surroundings and map out the optimal cleaning path. As it cleans, the vacuum stores this path as a Digital Floorplan® as the most efficient path to systematically clean your home and navigate around typical obstacles with ease. The robotic vacuums’ Cyclone Force system uses strong centrifugal forces to pick up and separate dirt and debris into an outer chamber to reduce filter clogging and to maintain optimal suction power as it cleans your whole house.

Both products will be available Spring 2016.
