Samsung Electronics today announced its new digital signage lineup at InfoComm 2023, North America’s largest audiovisual trade show, taking place in Orlando, Florida from June 14 to 16.

“Technology is a vital part of any business, and the innovative signage lineup we’re showcasing at InfoComm empowers businesses across industries to grow,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The newest addition to The Wall lineup is especially exciting, making production faster and easier in TV, film and other creative industries.”

Introducing The Wall for Virtual Production

At InfoComm, Samsung unveiled a new dedicated display, The Wall for Virtual Production (IVC Model), which will be available globally starting from today.

Virtual production studios can use ultra-large LED walls to create virtual content, integrating them with real-time visual effects technology to reduce the time and cost of content production. The Wall for Virtual Production leads the market in the application of this technology.

The Wall for Virtual Production’s LED display features pixel pitch options of P1.68 and P2.1, dedicated studio frame rates (23.976, 29.97 and 59.94Hz) and genlocking, which can synchronize the screen with a camera’s video signal. The display also boasts a refresh rate of up to 12,288Hz, a max brightness of 1,500nits, a 35,000:1 fixed contrast ratio (for P2.1) and up to 170-degree wide viewing angles. All these new features combine to enable an unprecedented level of picture quality for virtual content.

The Wall for Virtual Production is based on modular technology, allowing for a variety of installation options for different production environments and needs, ranging from a perfectly flat screen to up to 6,000R curvature. It can also be hung or stacked with other screens, and it is designed to be resilient to the dust and particles that are common in production environments.

The integrated Virtual Production Management (VPM) solution and the intuitive interface it provides make it easy to manage the screen and facilitate the highest-possible picture quality. To display colors as accurately and consistently as possible, The Wall for Virtual Production also features 3D lookup tables (LUTs) for color correction, wide-gamut HDR color processing and color adjustment between individual cabinets or modules. The VPM is also capable of detecting and resolving any potential LED-related issues.

At InfoComm, Samsung will be collaborating with Lux Machina, a pioneer of virtual production and modern ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects), to showcase The Wall for Virtual Production in actual use. Lux Machina has implemented technology like this in television series like “The Mandalorian” and “House of the Dragon,” as well as in broadcast events like the League of Legends World Championship, NFL Honors and The ACM Awards.

“The Wall has been designed for virtual production,” said Zach Alexander, President of Lux Machina. “With a high refresh rate, true color representation and a wide viewing angle, we believe that display technologies like this could help usher in the next generation of visual effects, making it much easier for studios to deliver high-quality virtual production projects.”

Samsung is also working with Wētā FX as a technical partner. Wētā FX is a New Zealand-based digital visual effects company that has produced visual effects for some of the highest-grossing films ever made, such as “The Lord of the Rings” series, “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

“Samsung’s The Wall for Virtual Production provides excellent color rendition and picture quality, and with the screen properties and black levels, one is able to control the precision of light it sends into a volume with ease. We look forward to working with the innovative team at Samsung and seeing how new techniques and capabilities can improve the experience for our storytellers,” said Kimball Thurston, CTO of Wētā FX.

The All-New Samsung QxC Series Crystal UHD Signage

In addition to The Wall, Samsung is introducing its full lineup of 20 new models in the globally available QxC Series Crystal UHD Signage Series. The displays feature significant upgrades in design and performance for unparalleled features and picture quality in any commercial environment.

The QxC lineup includes five QHC displays with 700nits of brightness (75”, 65”, 55”, 50” and 43”), eight QMC displays with 500nits of brightness (98”, 85”, 75”, 65”, 55”, 50”, 43” and 32”) and seven QBC displays with 350nits of brightness (98”, 85”, 75”, 65”, 55”, 50” and 43”).

The bezels on the QxC series are consistent and even on all four sides of the display, using the same thickness and dimensions to create a symmetrical design. The VESA mounting holes are in the center of the displays to ensure secure mounting. The series is 28.5mm thick, 40% slimmer than the previous model.1

All QxC displays offer an easy and intuitive new user interface, 4K UHD resolution, Tizen 7.0 for optimized performance of web services and industry-leading durability. SmartView+ wirelessly connects the displays to up to six devices at once, while anti-glare panels minimize light reflection for an unimpeded viewing experience. Plus, all QxC models have an Eco Sensor that can detect the brightness of the surrounding environment and optimize the brightness of the display accordingly.

Samsung Ushers in the Era of All-in-One LED Displays

Samsung is also unveiling the LED All-in-One (IAC Model), a 130-inch full HD LED screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Its pre-assembled frame kit allows users to install the display simply by hanging it on a wall.

The LED All-in-One has a slim 56mm design (up to 64mm with the Slim Fit Wall Mount). The screen provides 1,000nits of peak brightness and a 3,840Hz refresh rate, resulting in stunning video quality. The built-in Samsung S-Box has support for integrated media play and Microsoft 365, delivering the latest commercial tools to make the most out of the large LED display in business environments.

Industry-First Carbon Footprint Certification From TÜV Rheinland

Separately, Samsung Electronics announced that its 2023 Smart Signage lineup has earned a series of certifications for environmentally preferable products from highly recognized institutes in Germany and the U.S.

The 2023 Smart Signage (QMC Model) and The Wall All-in-One (IAB Model) have become the first signage models to receive a product carbon footprint certification from TÜV Rheinland, a global testing body. Established in 1872 and headquartered in Cologne, Germany, TÜV Rheinland provides quality and safety certification services to multiple industries.

The organization calculates its carbon footprint certification by evaluating the amount of greenhouse gases generated throughout the entire product lifecycle, ranging from production to disposal, based on internationally recognized standards. The certification from TÜV Rheinland follows another recent and notable recognition for Samsung from the Carbon Trust.2

The 2023 Smart Signage (QMC Model) has also earned an ENERGY STAR 8.0 certification from the Environmental Protection Agency for its energy efficiency and an Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) certification in recognition of its eco-conscious efforts, such as its recycled plastic use.

The evolution of digital signage – a type of display technology that’s used to deliver key information in an intuitive manner – has been remarkable. Today, digital signage enriches our daily lives with eye-catching content in all kinds of spaces, including plazas, shopping malls, cafes and more.

By utilizing digital signage as a media art platform, Samsung Electronics has been paving the way for the expansion of the technology’s role. Today, the company is the world’s No. 1 digital signage manufacturer, having developed products that support a wide range of consumer experiences in locations across the globe.

In celebration of Samsung’s participation in InfoComm 2021 – North America’s largest audiovisual industry event, set to take place in Orlando, Florida from October 27–29 – let’s take a look at the stories behind some of Samsung’s most stunning digital signage.

Digital Signage’s Expanding Role and Growing Market

Both the global digital signage market’s size and the speed of its growth have been impressive by any measure. According to Omdia, a leading market research firm, the global signage market is expected to reach a whopping $19.9 billion by 2023. With a 33 percent1 market share by volume as of the first half of this year, Samsung maintains a firm grip on the No. 1 position in the LCD smart signage market.

In the era of social distancing, the digital signage market has seen rapid growth. This is because digital signage is being utilized in all types of locations, including everything from kiosks that offer integrated solutions for orders and payments, to drive-throughs that allow customers to view menus and order food from the comfort of their car. As people’s lifestyles have begun to change, companies have been placing greater emphasis on digital communication. As such, the role of digital signage has expanded to encompass various functions that complement such lifestyle changes.

Captivating Crowds From New York to Helsinki

Whether it’s depicting an enormous waterfall in the middle of New York’s Times Square, or crashing waves in downtown Seoul, Samsung’s vivid and scalable outdoor signage instantly transforms the vibe of any space.

Samsung SMART LED Signage is installed on the side of the One Times Square building in New York’s Times Square. Roughly 110 meters tall and measuring more than 1,081 square meters in all, the signage, which boasts a tight LED pixel pitch and 9,000 nits of brightness, vividly displays a work of art known as “Waterfall-NYC (2021)”. The digital artwork depicts cool water cascading from an enormous waterfall.

Samsung SMART LED Signage measuring 1,620 square meters (four times the size of a basketball court) is installed on the exterior of COEX’s SM Town in Samseong-dong, Seoul. The signage makes full use of its unique L-shaped design to depict a strikingly realistic three-dimensional wave. The installation is the result of a partnership with the Seoul-based design company d’strict, which also created “WAVE”, the work of art that is on display.

Like the signage pictured above, the massive LED screen at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles captivates crowds with exciting visuals. Stadiums have always been places that are full of exciting sights and sounds, where crowds of people gather to cheer on their favorite teams. Now, visitors to one of the premier stadiums in the NFL can enjoy an unforgettable game experience made possible by Samsung signage.

The 360-degree, dual-sided curved LED screen that hangs above the field at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California measures 6,500 square meters in all, making it the single largest screen in the world. It is also the first stadium display to feature 4K picture quality, offering fans a vivid viewing experience from anywhere in the stadium. Approximately 9,100 square meters of Samsung LED signage has been installed on the stadium’s roof and around its exits.

Whereas large outdoor signage captivates audiences in open spaces, indoor signage can help heighten individuals’ excitement in a variety of settings, including when traveling.

Travelers from around the world may experience that excitement when encountering the S-shaped wall of Samsung SMART LED Signage in Finland’s Helsinki Airport. Meanwhile, the curved signage installed on the ceiling of MSC Cruises’ cruise ship, the MSC Grandiosa, enhances passengers’ experience with beautiful works of art.

Measuring 580 square meters, Samsung’s curved LED signage is installed on the ceiling of the Galleria in MSC Cruises’ cruise ship, the MSC Grandiosa. Because the signage can be operated at all hours, it can provide passengers with various content based on the time of day.

A total of 167 square meters of Samsung SMART LED Signage is installed in Finland’s Helsinki Airport. The S-shaped media wall features a 6000R curvature that emphasizes the beauty of waves. Onlookers can enjoy a wide range of natural sights curated by Finland’s tourism office, including picturesque snowy scenes and the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

Enhancing the Atmosphere of Any Space

It’s important to select signage that suits the characteristics of a particular space. This is especially true for large complexes and resorts, including shopping malls and hotels, which tend to feature a wide range of colors.

Drawing from its wide-ranging product portfolio, Samsung delivered a customized indoor LED signage solution to Jeju Island’s Jeju Dream Tower in Korea. A large, circular media wall was installed in the tower’s second floor lobby to create the impression that guests are being transported to a whole new world. In the hotel rooms, meanwhile, TVs and smart room solutions have been provided to help travelers relax and to amplify the hotel’s premium experience.

It’s important for indoor signage to present information with consistent brightness and colors. For semi-outdoor signage, which is displayed in places such as retail display windows and outdoor drive-throughs, the key is to display information clearly, even under bright sunlight.

Last year, Samsung installed semi-outdoor signage in more than 1,300 drive-throughs for the popular Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons. The signage features IP56-certified durability, which enables it to withstand Canada’s volatile weather conditions, as well as excellent visibility in bright light and an ultra-slim, 85mm design. By the end of this year, Samsung plans to continue expanding Canada’s largest semi-outdoor digital signage deployment yet by installing screens at 2,600 Tim Hortons drive-through locations.

In the U.S., drive-through sales at Smoothie King franchises have jumped from 70 to 90 percent during the pandemic. According to the company, part of the reason for this increase boils down to better business solutions enabled through signage. The pandemic has resulted in fewer one-on-one interactions with customers, making effective drive-through menu boards essential for revenue.

Smoothie King required a digitized business solution that would allow restaurant managers to make menu changes and localize promotions without having to wait to contact the franchise’s head office. Samsung’s semi-outdoor signage allowed them to innovate their operations by combining updated indoor and outdoor digital signage with remote management capabilities. This paved the way for more sales while demonstrating just how versatile Samsung signage has become.

(Clockwise from top left) Semi-outdoor signage at Tim Hortons in Canada, Starbucks’ QSR drive-through in Korea, McDonald’s ‘MacAuto’ QSR drive-through in Russia, and a Seven Eleven store in Taiwan.

Samsung signage is also becoming a common sight at subway stations, where displays relay information such as arrival times, transfer gates and more. Samsung has installed a total of 4,218 signage screens in 90 subway stations in Seoul, and has replaced many analog maps with 49 and 65-inch touchscreen displays.

The signage features IP5X-certified durability to withstand use in crowded subway stations, as well as an anti-reflective coating that enhances visibility. The displays allow subway passengers to enjoy a smarter commuting experience by presenting them with the information they need quickly and on a high-resolution screen.

Leading a New Era of Digital Signage Innovation

Samsung plans to strengthen its position as the world’s No. 1 signage manufacturer by advancing innovative technologies such as virtual production solutions. The company will utilize its state-of-the-art Micro LED, The Wall, to create an immersive and seemingly endless backdrop for capturing content. Because The Wall is modular, it can be easily installed in a variety of spaces. The virtual production studio solution will enable creators to connect LED displays to cameras to create richly detailed virtual settings in real time.

The Samsung Kiosk is another future-ready solution – one that is becoming increasingly more useful in an era of contactless consumer interactions.

Samsung Electronics, will showcase the latest additions to its industry-leading digital signage and visual display solutions portfolio at the InfoComm 2016 tradeshow. Scheduled to take place June 4-10, 2016, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, InfoComm is the largest annual global conference for the professional AV industry and is expected to welcome more than 40,000 attendees from nearly 110 countries.

Under the theme “Collaborate. Attract. Engage.”, Samsung’s booth (#C-6319) will include a variety of next-generation technologies designed to promote more efficient content delivery and display management in corporate, hospitality, public, retail and at-home environments (among others). Highlighted by the integration of the Tizen operating system into many of its newest digital signage technologies, Samsung’s diverse line-up will demonstrate how booth visitors can drive greater engagement, and related sales, through clear, cost-effective message presentation.

“As the world’s leading total digital signage solutions provider, we strive to discover new avenues that help our partners deliver captivating content and a differentiated experience at every stage of the customer journey,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to introduce the latest expansion of our cutting-edge visual display lineup at InfoComm 2016, and showcase how these new technologies solve prominent challenges and drive growth in today’s fast-paced business environments.”

A Powerful, Fourth Generation Signage Platform : The Power of Tizen

Beginning in 2016, Samsung’s new P Series digital signage technologies will feature the enhanced fourth generation Samsung SMART Signage Platform (SSSP 4.0) powered by the Tizen operating system. With Tizen, SSSP will deliver more powerful graphic performance and seamless content playback to expand users’ visual display possibilities while creating a more vivid and memorable experience for their audiences.

The Tizen-powered, fourth-generation SSSP features an upgraded graphics engine to drive faster response time, interactions and loading speeds. The platform additionally enables users to manage display content more rapidly through an optional PC-less all-in-one screen.

The refined SSSP 4.0 platform allows users to build and launch web-based applications by offering HTML5 support and a comprehensive toolset, including Web Simulator and Tizen Emulator. The new platform’s versatility expands users’ content development capabilities while reducing activation time.

Comprehensive Enterprise Display Management

A key component of the improved SSSP 4.0 platform, Samsung’s MagicInfo Server 4.0 program enables users to manage their entire display network from any location through a centralized server. Reliable and easy to use, MagicInfo Server 4.0 integrates a dedicated Backup Player and DataLink content streaming functionalities to reduce the manual work required to share essential information.

The enhanced MagicInfo Server 4.0 program additionally offers enterprise users a more capable set of content creation, scheduling and deployment tools. Content managers can leverage an intuitive interface, including drag-and-drop content scheduling, to rapidly identify and implement updates. MagicInfo Server 4.0 further makes content programming easy through a design that does not require JavaScript or additional plug-ins to operate, reducing steps to save valuable time.

Durable Standalone Signage

Samsung’s new standalone displays (PHF and PMF Series) provide a slim, strong and simple signage solution for environments facing tight or irregular space limitations. Featuring a slim-depth design (29.9mm) and narrow bezel (6.9mm), the PHF and PMF displays are among the thinnest on the market and can accommodate a range of business settings. The Tizen-supported standalone displays are designed for uninterrupted 24/7 content delivery, and an integrated centralized infrared receiver (IR) further ensures continued performance in any environment.

A host of additional design features further enable the PHF and PMF Series displays to deliver clear, brilliant content regardless of location. A non-glare frontal panel reduces natural and ambient light reflection to ensure continuous readability.

Industry Leading Large-Sized Outdoor Displays

InfoComm attendees also will get the first look at Samsung’s new large-format OHF Series outdoor displays. Billed as industry’s leading large-sized outdoor signage, the OHF Series is available in a variety of sizes (46-, 55-, 75- and 85-inch models), with each boasting a slim-depth design for more impactful content delivery.

The OHF Series displays are equipped with SSSP 4.0 and powered by the Tizen operating system, ensuring faster and more reliable content development and delivery. An embedded power box condenses operational components to a single system, conserving space while streamlining management. Engineered for any outdoor environment, the OHF Series displays can withstand temperatures ranging from -30-50oC without impeding content delivery. OHF Series viewers additionally benefit from external magic glass, 2,500nit brightness and a 5,000:1 contrast ratio that ensure messages can be seen clearly at any time and place.

Extreme Narrow-Bezel Video Walls

Optimized for a range of indoor retail, corporate and public-viewing applications, Samsung’s narrow bezel (1.7mm bezel-to-bezel) UHF-E video walls combine advanced color management capabilities with the visual enhancements of large-format signage to deliver clear and consistent content. The ultra-slim design eliminates distractions and keeps viewers focused on the display’s content rather than the display itself. Equipped with the same durability and color presentation components as its predecessors, the UHF-E video walls represent a sleek, stylish alternative capable of delivering uninterrupted content in any indoor setting.

Fine Pixel-Pitch LED Signage

Designed for corporate, control room and customer-facing environments, Samsung’s indoor SMART LED displays deliver compelling content and inspire collaboration at a lower total cost of ownership. These displays feature top-tier diodes and customizable pixel pitch compositions ranging from 1.5-2.5mm, providing seamless visibility while simultaneously accommodating users’ specific operational and branding needs. Combined with design elements that produce the same deep contrast, realistic picture quality and color consistency viewers expect from Samsung’s latest televisions, the LED signage portfolio offers users an extra edge to stand out within often-crowded indoor environments.
