Protected by Samsung and Microsoft Security

Samsung Electronics is making 2024 the year of the AI PC with the release of its most powerful and intelligent Galaxy Book product line yet, the Galaxy Book4 series.

This latest lineup — consisting of the Galaxy Book4 Ultra, Galaxy Book4 Pro and Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 — offers intelligent performance, enhanced security and a vivid, interactive display, all in an ultra-portable design. From the new Intel® Core Ultra Processor to the suite of AI features, the Galaxy Book4 series is packed with cutting-edge technology that aims to not only simplify but amplify users’ computing experience.

Visitors discovered the Galaxy Book4 series’ full capabilities inside Samsung’s booth at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, the world’s largest mobile exhibition held from February 26-29 in Barcelona, Spain.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Mincheol Lee, Head of Galaxy Eco Biz Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, and David Feng, Vice President of Client Computing Group and General Manager of Client Segments at Intel, to explore how the advancements in the Galaxy Book4 series can enrich the lives of users.

Unveiling the Galaxy Book4 Series, Powered by AI

Q. What key benefits can users expect from the new “AI PC” Galaxy Book4 series?

Lee: The Galaxy Book4 Ultra and Pro series exhibit unprecedented performance through a new Intel® Core Ultra processor that combines the latest central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and neural processing unit (NPU). In particular, the built-in NPU, Intel AI Boost, has been newly added for fast and efficient processing of large amounts of data — providing excellent multitasking and graphics performance. This new processor in the Galaxy Book4 series enables new AI functions that help increase productivity and offer new experiences in content creation and gaming.

In addition, various AI functions of the Galaxy S24 series can be conveniently accessed on a large PC screen with Link to Windows feature.

Q. An NPU has been newly added to the Intel® Core Ultra Processor, attracting quite some attention. Could you explain its role and function?

Feng: Intel is on a journey to empower everyone with AI on PCs with the recent launch of Intel Core Ultra. It’s important to note that the Intel Core Ultra processor introduces three AI engines — a CPU for fast response, a GPU for high throughput and a new NPU for low-power sustained AI workloads.

The new NPU can run AI applications at low power, freeing up the CPU and GPU for other system workloads like productivity and gaming. This means we are delivering elevated AI experiences on PCs without sacrificing system responsiveness, battery life or other vital functions.

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to highlight about the new product?

Lee: The Galaxy Book4 series boasts a variety of improvements and offers the best PC experience to users by providing various intelligent functions in cooperation with industry-leading partners, including Intel and Microsoft.

Intel’s latest Core Ultra processor and Samsung’s advanced hardware provide an optimized PC experience that supports better power efficiency and an improved cooling system. The Galaxy Book4 series is equipped with a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that guarantees a clear viewing experience regardless of the environment, with a touchscreen function for more convenient usability. To provide a clear viewing experience anytime and anywhere, the anti-reflective display reduces glare on screen and Vision Booster automatically adjusts color contrast and brightness even in direct sunlight.

Through Samsung’s own Galaxy Ecosystem, the Galaxy Book4 series provides powerful connected use of PCs, phones and tablets — all secured by Samsung Knox, which protects critical system data through 10 years of accumulated security technology and dedicated security chips.

Collaboration for Disruptive Innovation

Q. What was the shared goal of Samsung Electronics and Intel for launching the Galaxy Book4 series, and what were the key areas of focus to achieve it?

Feng: Intel and Samsung strive to provide the best PCs to consumers. Intel’s approach to ecosystem development is built on our value of “openness.” With the launch of the Galaxy Book4 series, Intel is committed to strengthening our existing collaboration while constantly exploring new opportunities as disruptive innovation is a critical way to help the PC industry grow.

Lee: Samsung and Intel are strong partners.

Samsung Electronics today announced it continues to collaborate with industry-leading innovators — including providers of chipsets, cloud platforms and servers — to expand the 5G vRAN ecosystem. This is an effort to drive multiparty collaboration and innovation for the advancement of software-based networks. With this ecosystem, the parties continue to advance vRAN towards a more scalable, flexible network that delivers carrier-grade performance, management and reliability.

Samsung is the global leader in the fully-virtualized 5G RAN market.1 The company’s achievement was driven by its 5G vRAN solution, which has been deployed around the world, making Samsung the only major network vendor to have delivered fully-virtualized commercial RAN deployments in North America, Europe and Asia.

Samsung delivered its 5G vRAN solutions for a large-scale commercial network service in the U.S. that launched in December 2020, providing reliable mobile services to millions of users. The company continues to expand its 5G vRAN footprint, with recent milestones including:

Achieved 2.25Gbps on a single user device with dual connectivity using vRAN and Massive MIMO radios on C-band spectrum in June 2021

Successfully launched commercial vRAN over C-band using 64T64R Massive MIMO radios in the U.S. in January 2022

Switched on the UK’s first 5G Open RAN site and the world’s first 5G Standalone (SA) Open RAN site in Japan — both powered by Samsung’s vRAN

Samsung’s commercially-proven network solutions range from traditional RAN to virtualized RAN to Open RAN — supporting operators’ 5G path of choice. To advance virtualization and openness, Samsung’s 5G vRAN splits the baseband functions into a fully disaggregated virtualized Distributed Unit (vDU) and virtualized Central Unit (vCU). The key to this disaggregated architecture is that the RAN software is separated from customized hardware and runs on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers. Samsung’s vRAN also supports O-RAN specifications, “opening up” interfaces between baseband unit and radios, allowing integration from different vendors.

“While many vendors claim they support Open RAN by starting with the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), in reality, this is still far from commercialization in large-scale networks and sidesteps the most important part of the Open RAN revolution — which starts from the disaggregation of hardware and software in the baseband, and also involves opening of the fronthaul,” said Woojune Kim, Executive Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s vRAN solution fully disaggregates the hardware and software in the baseband, and can support the open fronthaul interface. The company’s O-RAN compliant 5G vRAN solutions are deployed commercially in Japan and U.K. networks, offering seamless integration with other vendors’ radios.

Added Kim: “What differentiates Samsung is a combination of consistent innovation and large-scale commercial experience with leading Tier One operators around the world. This has helped us lead the advancement of vRAN and Open RAN beyond lab tests and field trials, and into major commercial markets. Now, the creation of this vRAN ecosystem will drive innovation to the next level, unlocking numerous opportunities ahead for network industry players and helping operators scale their businesses.”

Innovating Together for Success

As a pioneer and leader in vRAN technology, Samsung has brought together various companies for collaboration in this ecosystem — starting with Dell, HPE, Intel, Red Hat and Wind River. Samsung has tested and validated interoperability with each company platform, which collectively holds a comprehensive view of the network evolution at every step of the development process. The ecosystem will help in the preparation for commercial deployments, including conducting various activities in Samsung’s lab — aligning solution roadmaps from multiple vendors, fostering a fully interoperable approach to vRAN and leading the design process of an end-to-end vRAN solution.

Companies joining this vRAN ecosystem include:

Dell Technologies

Samsung Electronics announced a significant performance breakthrough on its 5G SA Core, in collaboration with Intel. The two companies achieved a 5G SA Core data processing capacity of 305Gbps (Gigabits per second) per server and latency improvement in a mobile network environment with commercial features enabled.

This superior performance of Samsung’s 5G SA Core was accomplished using the 2nd generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor and the Intel® Ethernet Network Adapter E810 with Enhanced Dynamic Device Personalization (DDP).

The capacity of 305Gpbs is equivalent to hosting more than 200,000 users that are live-streaming standard definition (SD) videos simultaneously.

The resulting performance advancement will not only help increase cost-efficiency for 5G Core network deployments, but also help accelerate the delivery of next-generation, high-capacity networks. This will foster more immersive 5G use cases that require much higher data volume processing with low latency. These include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X), experiences, which can be enjoyed without impact to performance through greater capacity.

5G’s Expanding Capacity

Normally, data processing requires a complex path using multiple cores, including packet distribution, transmission, and processing cores. With the Intel Ethernet Network Adapter E810 with Enhanced DDP, the data distribution and transmission functions are better optimized across the network adapter and the CPU cores, resulting in higher performance. Samsung and Intel were able to implement a simplified system configuration and boost packet processing and overall network performance.

“Through close collaboration with Intel, we were able to achieve an industry-leading performance with our 5G SA Core,” said Sohyong Chong, Senior Vice President and Head of Core Software R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung’s cloud-native 5G SA Core, through its highly flexible and scalable design, will enable our customers to launch 5G services more swiftly and cost-effectively.”

“The transition to 5G Standalone Core is essential to achieve the full potential of 5G,” said Alex Quach, Vice President and General Manager, Wireline and Core Network Division, Intel Corporation. “This milestone achieved with Samsung is a verification of how strong industry collaboration and the use of innovative technologies can enhance performance to accelerate this transition and pave the way to new network and edge services.”

For more complete information on the performance results, refer to our white paper: Samsung Achieves 305Gpbs on 5G UPF Core Utilizing Intel Architecture.

Samsung has pioneered the successful delivery of 5G end-to-end solutions including chipsets, radios, and core network technologies. The company supports 5G commercial services in the world’s leading markets, including Korea, the U.S. and Japan. In addition, the company is rapidly expanding its global footprint to new markets including Canada and New Zealand.
