Samsung Electronics announced its first Gear VR device aimed to consumers, extending its leadership in the wearables category. The latest edition of the Gear VR is compatible with even more smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge, leveraging each device’s super AMOLED display to provide the color, clarity and performance needed for an amazing virtual reality experience.

At this European showcase for the new range, Samsung also premiered exclusive content commissioned to bring to life the 360 sound concept and ring radiator technology. ‘The 360 Sound Experiment’ was created by artistic collective Artisan and produced by Little Dot Studios, with the stunning installation bringing to life the idea of a room filled 360 with sound using color and light. Samsung Electronics introduced the LM301A, a flip-chip-based mid-power LED package that can operate at anywhere from 0.2 watts to 1 watt — providing a wide range of current options, resulting in much improved light efficacy. The package was announced at a press conference, in conjunction with LIGHTFAIR International 2015, being held in New York, May 5-7.

Coming in a 3.0mm by 3.0mm form factor that is increasingly popular in LED lighting applications today, the new LM301A’s lower and wider current alternatives are a result of Samsung flip chip technology, which allows the LED chip to have the shortest distance from the junction to the base of a package, and eliminates the need for metal wire bonding in the packaging process. These changes enable much lower heat resistance compared to conventional epi-up chip technology – an approximate five percent temperature drop per watt within a more desirable 25°C to 85°C temperature range.

“Designed with advanced flip chip technology, the new LM301A overcomes what had been significant performance and power limitations of conventional mid-power lighting LED packages,” said Dr. Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President, LED Lighting Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to strengthen our technology leadership in the market by launching highly competitive, next generation LED products based on Samsung’s most innovative, market-proven LED technologies.”

The light efficacy levels make the LM301A package well suited for diverse lighting applications ranging from ambient to high intensity lighting, such as high bays and outdoor lighting. In addition, the performance and cost-competiveness of the new mid-power package should also be well regarded by lighting fixture manufacturers.

The LM301A features Epoxy Mold Compound (EMC) packaging, which makes it more reliable and extends its lifespan. Compared to existing Polyphthalamide (PPA) and PCT materials now extensively used in LED packaging, Samsung’s EMC packaging offers more protection against heat and UV rays, making it suitable for high-luminance LED applications requiring higher wattage.

The new package also will support CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) specifications ranging from 2700K to 6500K.

The LM301A will be available beginning in July.

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, unveiled the 850 EVO M.2 and 850 EVO mSATA solid state drive (SSD) lineups, which will launch today in 53 countries. The 850 EVO M.2 and mSATA SSDs are new form factors of the award-winning 850 EVO SSD that launched in December 2014 and features Samsung’s breakthrough 3D V-NAND technology for maximum performance and endurance. Just one-tenth the weight of a traditional 2.5-inch SSD, the M.2 and mSATA SSDs are ideal for users looking to upgrade their desktop or ultrathin PCs with high-capacity, high-performance storage.

In December, Samsung unveiled the 850 EVO featuring 3-bit 3D V-NAND technology, which greatly enhanced the everyday computing experience by overcoming the density limitations of conventional planar NAND architecture. 3D V-NAND stacks 32 cell layers vertically over one another, rather than decreasing cell dimensions to fit onto a fixed horizontal space, resulting in higher density and better performance with a smaller footprint. Now, with the M.2 and mSATA form factor SSDs, more consumers with desktops or ultrathin PCs can benefit from best-in-class performance and reliability of the 850 EVO and V-NAND technology.

The Samsung 850 EVO mSATA comes in 1 terabyte (TB), 500 gigabyte (GB), 250GB and 120GB capacities and boasts the same top-notch read/write speeds as the 2.5-inch 850 EVO, with read speeds of up to 540 megabytes per second (MB/s) and write speeds of up to 520 MB/s. The 850 EVO M.2 will be available in 500GB, 250GB and 120GB capacities, offer read speeds of up to 540 MB/s and write speeds of up to 500MB/s.

Each drive manages large data transfers and complex multi-tasking operations using the Samsung TurboWrite technology. Featuring the TurboWrite technology, the 500GB and 1TB models offer random write speeds up to of 88K Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS), and random read speeds of up to 97K IOPS, meaning each drive is able to easily manage large data transfers and handle complex multi-tasking operations.

Similar to the 2.5-inch 850 EVO, the M.2 and mSATA drives offer enhanced reliability with improved sustained performance, as well as AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption to ensure the safety and security of data.

The Samsung M.2 and mSATA 850 EVO SSDs have a five-year limited warranty and an endurance rating of 150 total bytes written (TBW) for the 500GB and above capacities.

Samsung introduced a high-performance mobile memory storage based on Embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) 5.0 technology. The new 128 gigabyte (GB), 3-bit NAND-based eMMC 5.0 storage is targeted at the smartphone and tablet mass markets.

While flagship smartphones are already transitioning to 128GB memory storage based on Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 or eMMC 5.1 standards, mid-market smartphones will now be able to increase their storage capacity to 128GB as well. Samsung’s new 3-bit 128GB eMMC 5.0 memory speeds up this transition as the industry’s highest density eMMC 5.0 solution.

The new 128GB eMMC 5.0 delivers 260 megabytes per second (MB/s) for sequential data reading, which is the same level of performance as that of MLC NAND-based eMMC 5.1 memory. For random data read and write operations, it can handle up to 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 5,000 IOPS respectively, which is sufficient for supporting high definition video processing and advanced multi-tasking features. These IOPS speeds are approximately four and 10 times faster, respectively, than those of a typical external memory card.

With the new 3-bit eMMC 5.0 line-up, Samsung has extended its 3-bit NAND business from SSDs for data centers, servers and PCs to the entire mobile memory storage market. Samsung will continue to broaden its application of 3-bit NAND Flash memory by developing higher-performance and higher-density solutions, as well as strengthening the competitiveness of its memory business.

Samsung is now mass producing the industry’s first 128-gigabyte (GB) ultra-fast embedded memory based on the much-anticipated Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard for next-generation flagship smartphones. The new embedded memory’s UFS 2.0 interface is the most advanced JEDEC-compliant, next-generation flash memory storage specification in the world.

“With our mass production of ultra-fast UFS memory of the industry’s highest capacity, we are making a significant contribution to enable a more advanced mobile experience for consumers,” said Jee-ho Baek, Senior Vice President of Memory Marketing, Samsung Electronics. “In the future, we will increase the proportion of high-capacity memory solutions, in leading the continued growth of the premium memory market.”

UFS memory utilizes “Command Queue,” a technology that accelerates the speed of command execution in SSDs through a serial interface, significantly increasing data processing speeds compared to the 8-bit parallel-interface-based eMMC standard. As a result, Samsung UFS memory conducts 19,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random reading, which is 2.7 times faster than the most common embedded memory for high-end smartphones today, the eMMC 5.0. It also delivers a sequential read and write performance boost up to SSD levels, in addition to a 50 percent decrease in energy consumption. In addition, the random read speed is12 times faster than that of a typical high-speed memory card (which runs at 1,500 IOPS), and is expected to greatly improve system performance.

In the future, Samsung anticipates that UFS will support high-end mobile market needs, while eMMC solutions remain viable for the mid-market, value segments.

For random writing of data to storage, the blazingly fast UFS embedded memory operates at 14,000 IOPS and is 28 times as fast as a conventional external memory card, making it capable of supporting seamless Ultra HD video playback and smooth multitasking functions at the same time, enabling a much improved mobile experience.

Samsung’s new UFS embedded memory comes in 128GB, 64GB and 32GB versions, which are twice the capacity of its eMMC line-up, making it today’s optimal memory storage solution for high-end mobile devices.

In an attempt to provide more design flexibility to global customers, Samsung’s UFS embedded memory package, a new ePoP (embedded package on package) solution, can be stacked directly on top of a logic chip, taking approximately 50 percent less space.

Over the next several years, Samsung will continue to set the pace for memory solutions that combine truly high-performance with high capacity.

Samsung Electronics, a leading provider of mobile broadband networking solutions, announced its C-RAN2.0 solution — an enhanced Centralized RAN (C-RAN) platform designed for radio performance enhancement as well as additional cost savings for operators.

C-RAN2.0 builds upon Samsung’s successful C-RAN solution which relocates baseband units (BBUs) – the equipment used to process transmission signals – from each base station to one or more centralized locations. Major two new innovations of C-RAN2.0 are baseband capacity pooling and baseband clustering

Baseband pooling represents a new line of defense against data spikes that are often the result of large gatherings, such as concerts, festivals or sporting events. It works by allowing the network to efficiently aggregate its baseband resources across a large cluster of cells and introducing dynamic capacity management.

This is made possible by Samsung’s newly developed C-RAN switch, which enables dynamic routing of traffic between cell sites (remote radio units) and the centralized BBUs. The C-RAN switch also provides significant energy savings by de-activating BBUs during times of low network load. As a result, it brings critical value to operators in terms of network reactivity, flexibility and scalability.

The second new innovation, baseband clustering, enables very fast and efficient coordination between BBUs, improving cell edge performance and facilitating the introduction of advanced scheduling features, such as coordinated multi-point (CoMP) and inter-site carrier aggregation.

In a typical network with carrier aggregation, a user device can connect to multiple frequencies, or carriers, but only from a single cell site. In many situations, however, the coverage patterns and signal propagation of these frequencies may be different, potentially leading to sub-par performance. C-RAN2.0’s baseband clustering enables Samsung’s Best Cell Aggregation feature, which allows a user device to select the best signals available, even across multiple cell sites. For users, this results in a more consistent mobile experience as they move through the network.

“Samsung’s C-RAN2.0 is well-suited for city deployments where there are constraints in site procurement despite continuing demand for improved network coverage and performance,” Joonho Park, Senior Vice President and head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business. “In these situations, densification is a high priority, and C-RAN is optimally designed to enable rapid deployment with a significantly smaller footprint that a traditional distributed base station.
