Orchestrating displays for a business is no small feat. Displays are important as they play a key role in setting the tone and coordinating interaction in a physical space. However, each business has unique needs and it can get mind-boggling to find optimal solutions from the vast array of options available. Samsung’s professional display showrooms across the globe help business owners and managers tackle this task by providing access to its broad portfolio of cutting-edge display solutions as well as expertise in designing experiences around them.

▲ The Samsung Connected Experience Center in Irvine, California

The Samsung Connected Experience Center (CEC) in Irvine, California is a 7,500-square-foot platform for discovery and business transformation. Here, clients and Samsung experts work side by side to turn vision into strategy and strategy into deployment. At the heart of the CEC’s mission is a focus on understanding each client’s needs and delivering solutions that maximize business impact. Organizations from hospitality, entertainment, retail, education, government, and other sectors partner with Samsung to develop future-ready strategies and unlock new opportunities.

▲ The LED demo zone at CEC Irvine

Discovering Display: Where Technology Becomes Tangible

For Lupe Verdin, B2B Visual Display CAD (Consultant, Architect, Designer) Liaison, the CEC is a place where technology finally becomes tangible. “You can’t always explain with words what must be experienced with eyes,” she notes. “From the moment clients arrive, they’re welcomed and guided through a full, hands-on journey of what our technology can offer. At this point, the unmatchable picture quality and service becomes clear — it’s something that’s hard to match elsewhere.”

▲ Lupe Verdin in a CEC Irvine showroom

A recent example shows how powerful this experience can be. What began as a visit to compare a 98-inch display quickly evolved into a broader vision: “The client ended up expanding their project to seven LED walls for conference rooms, a showroom, and a security operations center. Seeing their own images and videos on our displays — especially the 0.9mm COB (Chip On Board) LED — the clients identified new opportunities. Seeing the technology in person helps realize how advanced displays can transform spaces and user experiences.”

▲ Multiple LED Formats with Varying Pixel Pitches on Display at CEC Irvine

A key differentiator for the CEC is the ability to showcase the full breadth of Samsung’s portfolio in one place. Clients can compare indoor, outdoor, and specialty LED solutions side by side — offering a realistic preview of how their own content comes to life on Samsung’s displays. “Other showrooms don’t offer the same breadth of technology.”

Optimizing Business Value: Where Challenges Meet Solutions

▲ Noor Armar in hospitality demo zone at CEC Irvine

Noor Armar, Solution Enablement Manager at Samsung’s North America Display Office (NADO), describes the CEC as a place where business challenges are addressed in real time. The CEC provides a low-risk, immersive environment to test ideas, explore trends, and co-design solutions aligned with strategic goals.

“Irvine CEC is a great place to provide live demonstrations on how our display solutions can be tailored to a client’s needs and add real value to their business,” Armar says. “Seeing the belief in our customers’ eyes after they experience our products hands-on is probably my favorite part.”

▲ Hospitality zone at CEC Irvine features a SmartThings Pro demo

For example, the SmartThings Pro showcase helps clients in hospitality, retail, and cruise lines explore new guest journeys and operational models. Based on data aggregation and AI-driven automation, SmartThings Pro enables seamless, personalized guest experiences such as automatic check-in, adaptive lighting, climate control, and personalized streaming — all managed through a single, integrated platform.

“Efficiency and guest satisfaction don’t have to be trade-offs. Our role is to help clients understand the value of integrated platforms, even when the underlying technology is invisible to guests,” said Armar.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it has recently finished implementing its SMART Signage at the new Istanbul Airport, which will be the world’s largest airport once fully-completed, serving 200 million passengers annually. It will host 2,000 arriving and departing aircrafts, with flights to 350 destinations.

This project includes nearly 700 Samsung SMART LCD and LED Signage, including LED displays covering a total of 1,012 square meters. The total surface area of the LED displays is equivalent to that of 2.5 basketball courts. Thanks to the advanced technical service and logistics capabilities of Samsung, the project was successfully completed by a technical team of 28 in only 45 days with the help of B.T. Global, specialized in digital signage, security, data storage and IT services.

The new Istanbul Airport aims to be the biggest international airport in the world, covering 76.5 million square meters. The first phase of the Istanbul Airport opened on October 29, 2018, the 95th anniversary of the Turkish Republic. The airport’s main terminal building, a 1.4 million square meter space under one roof, is where Samsung led the digitalization project that took place through the installation of digital signage technology. Media Port Istanbul, the operator of the Istanbul Airport Digital Advertisement, entrusted Samsung to provide the digital signages inside the airport and highlighted the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology systems with elegant design of displays.

Samsung’s eye-catching LED signage will welcome visitors who enter Istanbul Airport with two giant 193-sqm LED screens at the international departure gate near the hotel area and the front office. Passengers will also encounter Samsung LED signage from arrival halls and baggage claim areas to check-in areas, passport control and lounges.

“We are proud to participate in one of the most significant projects in Turkey’s history and a great achievement in global aviation,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung SMART Signage not only guarantees excellent colors and picture quality to capture visitors’ eyes, but its durable, IP5x-validated design ensures 24/7 continuous content delivery regardless of environmental factors, including dust, dirt and lighting exposure.”

“Samsung’s brand reliability as a global display business leader was one of the most important considerations when determining who would manage this important project since it had to be executed with precision in such a short period of time,” said Kadri Samsunlu, Chief Executive Officer of Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA). “We appreciate the quality of Samsung’s cutting-edge technology together with Media Port Istanbul’s market experience for our new Istanbul Airport to take one step further to grow as a major travel hub.”

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced that it is now offering LED component solutions that have been optimized for horticulture lighting. The company’s new horticulture LED lineup features a newly developed “red LED” package, as well as additions to key existing Samsung “white LED” package and module families to include horticulture lighting specifications.

“Our horticulture LED solutions are based on LED technologies that deliver proven levels of performance and reliability across an extensive range of lighting applications,” said Yoonjoon Choi, vice president of LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “By broadening our lineup to include horticulture LEDs, we are providing global luminaire manufacturers with a one-stop resource for these solutions as well as for our many other LED technologies.”

Samsung’s new horticultural LED – the LH351B Red – is a high-power package providing a wavelength of 660 nanometers (nm) with a photosynthetic photon flux (PPF)* value of 2.15 micromoles per second (μmol/s) (350mA), making it optimal for most types of horticulture lighting. The 660-nm wavelength helps to accelerate the growing of plants including their photosynthesis, as well as enrich the blooming of flowers. The package also features a very low thermal resistance of 2.0 kelvins per watt (K/W), allowing for easier heat dissipation within LED luminaires. Moreover, the LH351B Red uses the same electrode pad design as its LH351 series counterparts, enabling greater PCB design flexibility in luminaire manufacturing.

Beyond its new LH351B Red offering, Samsung has added horticulture specifications to its mid-power packages – LM301B; LM561C, and two linear modules – Q-series and H inFlux. These LED component families now include PPF values of 0.52μmol/s (65mA), 0.49μmol/s (65mA), 24μmol/s (0.45A, 21.9V) and 114μmol/s (1.38A, 46.9V), respectively.

In addition, the white LED packages and modules feature extremely high light efficacy of 2.92 micromoles per joule (μmol/J) (65mA), 2.72μmol/J (65mA), 2.43μmol/J (0.45A, 21.9V) and 1.76μmol/J (1.38A, 46.9V), respectively, while the LH351B Red delivers 3.13μmol/J (350mA). These high efficacy levels minimize the impact of lighting on ambient temperatures, allowing growers to better control temperatures in almost any greenhouse environment and save on energy costs.

Samples of Samsung’s horticulture LEDs are available now and will be showcased at LIGHTFAIR International 2018 (booth #1112) in Chicago, Illinois (USA), May 8-10.

* Editor’s Note: PPF (photosynthetic photon flux) is a unit that measures the total amount of photons in the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) range – a spectral range between 400 and 700nm that supports plant photosynthesis.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced that its Programmable Multichannel Driver (PMD) has been selected as the top enabling technology of the year at the 2017 Lux Awards.

Since 2010, the Lux Awards has been recognized as one of the most prestigious honors for lighting component manufacturers and customers who have significantly improved the global lighting environment, reduced energy consumption or achieved major technological advances of importance to users worldwide.

Samsung’s PMD features two-channel driving, allowing luminaires to tune color temperature (CCT) and dim light output. For example, in order to control a luminaire with warm white and cool white modules, previously a separate driver was needed for each color temperature as well as a controller to connect the two drivers to a single dimmer. However, with Samsung’s award-winning PMD, a luminaire only needs to be wired to the PMD in order to fine-tune the CCT and control dimming in an exacting manner. This dual role adds to the simplicity and convenience of everyday lighting environments in an extensive number of applications ranging from commercial to architectural lighting.

The PMD also supports DALI and 0-10V output ports, as well as the universal input voltage range for easy adoption throughout the global lighting market. Its programming software allows lighting system managers to easily adjust operating value settings, such as CCT, current and dimming levels, to create the most optimized lighting environments.

Samsung’s PMD has become a key element in a growing number of smart lighting systems as it can be quickly linked to a wide range of control modules and sensors through the use of a 24V auxiliary power supply, eliminating the need for an additional power source. Moreover, it can be adjusted in 1mA increments, enabling more efficient inventory management for luminaire manufacturers.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced a new family of chip-on-board LED lighting packages, labeled the “Samsung D-series Special Color.” The packages are engineered to bring out the most desirable color tones of objects whose viewing is particularly color-sensitive, making them optimal for many commercial lighting applications.

Through spectrum engineering, color spectrums within the D-series have been tuned to deliver exceptionally high color vividness, without the use of harmful ultraviolet (UV) lighting chips. The packages deliver a TM-30* Gamut Index (Rg) of over 110, a level that ensures lighting with outstanding color and whiteness. Today, to provide almost as vivid color, many LED lamps instead use “near-UV” chips, which can damage the human eye and clothing after repeated exposure. Near-UV rays can display vivid colors, but only when the whites in the object being illuminated contain fluorescent brightening agents. An alternative is to use expensive ceramic discharge metal-halide (CDM) lamps that do not last nearly as long.

As color has a significant influence on consumer purchase decisions, the new D-series now offers lighting options for three of the most important segments of commercial goods: fashion (stylish clothing), meat and vegetables. The LED packages for each segment have been designed with the most effective combination of phosphors to illuminate what is being sold in the most appealing way. To determine the most attractive color rendering and saturation levels based on subjective perceptions, Samsung ran extensive preference tests among many demographic groups worldwide.

“Our new ‘D-series Special Color’ brings much greater value to the commercial lighting industry, reaching far beyond the ordinary image-rendering benefits of LEDs,” said Jacob Tarn, executive vice president of the LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “We are determined to continue to be the leading innovator in LED component solutions that are not only outstanding in quality, but which also bring the most practical benefits to the ultimate user – consumers.”

The “D-series Special Color” has been in mass production since late last month. Packages generate from 13 to 33 watts to create the best combination of LEDs and phosphors for each commercial segment. Furthermore, they come in the same shapes and sizes as the standard Samsung D-series to simplify retrofitting of existing luminaires.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced the launch of the “Q-series,” a new line-up of LED linear modules for use in premium indoor luminaire applications where an exceptionally high level of light efficacy* is required.

The Q-series features 200 lumens per watt (lm/W) of light efficacy, which is the highest efficacy level among current LED linear modules. The new modules are the first to incorporate the LM301B, Samsung’s recently announced mid-power LED package.

This allows LED lighting fixtures using the new modules to reach more than 150lm/W, enabled through an optical efficiency level of approximately 86 percent and LED driver efficiency of about 88 percent. The Q-series’ performance levels are ideally suited to meet DLC** Premium technical standards, which require higher efficacy and lumen maintenance specifications than the DLC Standard classification.

The new Q-series modules come in one-, two- and four-foot sizes, and can be combined linearly to achieve any desired length. There are two sets of modules: Q-series modules for the North American market are UL certified, while those for the European market have CE certification.

With the addition of the premium Q-series line-up, Samsung now offers five families of LED lighting modules (Q-, H-, M-, S- and V-series) to meet most indoor LED lighting needs. The Q-series has the same form factor as Samsung’s other modules for easy retrofitting with existing LED luminaires and is now available through Samsung’s worldwide LED sales network.

Samsung’s Q-series line-up includes:

There’s a new league gaining traction in sports venues around the world. But rather than governing the rules of the sport, this particular league is changing the game in terms of the in-stadium experience, capturing the attention of spectators all over. Not to mention, the competition among its teams is undeniably fierce. Who, you ask, is this new player in the sports world? The answer can only be LED signage.

Stadium LED signage offers improved visibility, enhanced connectivity and unlimited possibilities for fan engagement. And, while the competition in the LED signage market is just as tough as it is among rival sports teams, Samsung Electronics is quickly becoming an industry leader through its LED signage installed in some of the world’s major sports arenas.

Stadium LED Signage Off to a Running Start

Across the US, Samsung’s LED signage can be found in major NFL, NBA and college stadiums, as well as MLB stadiums. Displays at the AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs, and the Baltimore Ravens’ home turf, the M&T Bank Stadium, elevate the spectator experience by providing new, more immersive views of the action.

Likewise, in New Zealand, Samsung Electronics recently completed the installation of a ribbon-type LED display at the Eden Park Stadium, the country’s largest and most iconic sports arena. Offering over 100 LED screens throughout the concourse, in the stands and in corporate areas to further enhance the spectator experience.

Across the world in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, plans are set for 17 large-sized LED electronic signboards to be installed at National Stadium, Hockey Stadium, Aquatic Center, and AXIATA Arena that will host the 2017 Southeast Asian Games. The state-of-art LED signage, which will allow the popular event to be displayed more vividly and accurately, will be installed in August.

In Incheon, South Korea, meanwhile, the SK Wyverns Munhak Baseball Stadium boasts the world’s largest LED baseball scoreboard at that time – a 64-meter-wide, 18-meter-tall Samsung screen that not only displays the score, lineup and player stats, but also messages and videos from fans.

As the competition heats up, it’s safe to say that Samsung is advancing as a clear leader.

An Entirely New In-Stadium Experience

The San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center, San Antonio, TEXAS

Because sports stadiums are full of blind spots, even the most quick-eyed fan can easily miss important moments in the game. But with the outstanding image quality and differentiated solutions of Samsung’s LED signage, spectators can enjoy every dynamic detail of the action no matter where they’re seated.

Samsung’s Smart LED Signage displays promise crisp images with uniform color brightness, accurate color calibration, equal and balanced screen color, and a high refresh rate of 24,000 Hz, which is achieved through direct driving. While replays displayed on TVs or personal cameras – which generally have a refresh rate of 10,000 Hz or lower – tend to flicker, Samsung’s LED signage ensures that spectators can enjoy flicker-free images of the field or court, even during ultra slow-motion replays.

Furthermore, Samsung’s signage solutions offer a number of possibilities to enhance fan engagement. For instance, spectators might participate in games displayed on the signboards via their smartphones or interactive voice response (IVR). Together, these features are pushing LED signage into the spotlight, allowing them to play a more central role in the venue experience.

As the industry leader in signage in 2016, Samsung’s vertical signage has been used widely in hospitals, airports, schools and offices. Now, as sporting arenas begin to incorporate the technology, Samsung Electronics hopes to further enrich game day for sports fans all over the globe.

Samsung Electronics will unveil its latest visual display blockbuster, the new Samsung Cinema Screen. As the world’s first High Dynamic Range LED theater display, the cinema screen delivers unprecedented picture quality and brings movies and other on-screen contents to life with higher vibrancy and accuracy.

Samsung will formally debut the cinema LED screen at a series of preview demonstrations during March 27-30, 2017 at the Cinemark Century Orleans 18 and XD Theatre, located inside The Orleans Hotel & Casino. The premiere will coincide with the neighboring CinemaCon 2017 conference, the largest and most important gathering for the worldwide motion picture theater industry with attendees from more than 80 countries.

The 34 foot Samsung Cinema Screen easily accommodates modern theater dimensions. In addition to delivering LED picture quality at 4K (4,096 x 2,160) resolution, the screen also exceeds the highly-esteemed DCI specifications used to ensure a uniform and high level of technical performance, reliability, and quality in digital cinema. As a result, the new Samsung screen’s performance surpasses traditional projection-based technologies’ visual capabilities for a realistic presentation and is guaranteed to impress even the most entertainment-savvy guests.

“As the popularity of advanced at-home entertainment systems and streaming platforms increases, theaters must reposition themselves as a destination for an incomparable viewing experience that consumers simply cannot encounter anywhere else,” said Sang Kim, Vice President of Samsung Electronics America. “Our new Cinema Screen technology brings a more powerful and high-quality picture to the big screen, creating an environment where viewers feel as if they are part of every scene.”

The Cinema Screen’s direct-lit LED technology truly delivers High Dynamic Range (HDR) to the cinema, showcasing on-screen contents at a peak brightness level nearly 10 times greater than that offered by standard cinema projectors (146fL versus 14fL) with improved uniformity and free of optical distortion and interference. This futuristic exhibition also offers a highly accurate and superior color presentation that will capture the viewer’s eye. Complementary ultra-contrast and low tone grayscale settings enable the screen to showcase both brightest colors and the deepest blacks at a nearly infinity:1 contrast ratio.

The innovation present in Cinema Screen will be matched with an innovative audio solution powered by Harman Professional Solutions’ Cinema Group (a recently completed acquisition) and Samsung’s Audio Lab. Details will be forthcoming about this combined evolution in cinema “Sight & Sound.”

“Harman is excited to continue its collaboration with the Samsung Cinema Screen team and the Samsung Audio Lab. With our expertise in cinema sound systems, we look forward to helping to extend Samsung’s leadership in Visual Display solutions into the theater,” said Brian Divine, Vice President of Tour and Cinema Solutions Group.

As the demands for movie theater space evolve, the Samsung Cinema Screen offers the versatility to satisfy various audience needs. The screen maintains its advanced presentation capabilities in ambient lighting conditions regardless of the featured on-screen content and accommodates users who wish to utilize their theaters for corporate events, concert and sports event viewing, and gaming competitions.

“The launch of our cinema LED display is merely the latest step toward our vision for a complete end-to-end theater experience powered by digital signage,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through modern technologies ranging from touch-screen self-ticketing kiosks to digital concession menu boards and interactive movie posters, Samsung already is helping theaters improve customer engagement and boost operational efficiency. We look forward to continuing to serve as a total solutions provider for the theater industry and finding new and exciting ways to improve the customer experience.”

The Samsung Cinema Screen is currently undergoing the DCI certification process and recently completed compliance test at Keio University in Tokyo.

Thanks to a partnership with Samsung Electronics, visitors to the Sydney Opera House may now enjoy access to unique artistic and cultural content illuminating the legendary venue’s storied tradition and delivered through eye-catching LED signage.

Samsung expanded its presence at the landmark this year with the opening of The Lounge enabled by Samsung, a new meeting place located in the heart of the Opera House that features stylish, comfortable seating, as well as interactive displays and exclusive digital content. The centerpiece of the new lounge is Samsung’s IL020F fine pixel pitch LED signage, which forms a large-format (4m x 2m) display that is designed to draw visitors’ attention to a specially commissioned digital artwork.

A ‘Landmark’ Visual Experience

The Lounge marks Samsung’s first Smart LED display panel deployment in Australia, and is one of a number of technologies being trialed as part of the Sydney Opera House’s $202 million renewal plans. Backed by the government of New South Wales, the renewal program will transform the cultural icon for the next generation of artists, audiences and visitors. A multi-venue performing arts center adjacent to Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House is among the most recognizable landmarks in the city, hosting more than 2,000 performances and welcoming 1.2 million visitors on site each year.

Samsung Australia, the Opera House’s first and only principal technology partner, collaborated with the venue to design The Lounge in a way that would enhance the visitor experience while preserving the integrity of its structure and brand.

“[The Lounge] is an early milestone in renewing the experience for our visitors, and highlights the importance of collaboration in transforming the Opera House experience,” said Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Wilson. “With Samsung’s support, we have a wonderful opportunity to trial the latest technology while creating a more welcoming environment for visitors.”

Samsung’s IL020F LED signage presents a deeper exploration into the landmark’s story through an original digital artwork that draws on the history, inspiration and design of the Opera House as well as the performances held within it. Content includes a vast library of past performances, photos and interviews all brought to life by the high-resolution displays, which leverage the same technologies employed in Samsung’s televisions and LCD screens to deliver vibrant and consistent visuals.

Signs of Collaborations to Come

In addition to The Lounge, Samsung and the Sydney Opera House have agreed to collaborate over the next five years on further initiatives to improve the landmark and provide visitors with the best possible experience.

“The Lounge enabled by Samsung is an incredibly exciting way for Australians and tourists from all over the world to experience what the Sydney Opera House has to offer,” said Phillip Newton, Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Australia. “We are proud to work in partnership with the Sydney Opera House to enrich the experience of millions of visitors through our most advanced and immersive technology.”

Beyond IL020F LED signage, Samsung’s presence in The Lounge includes a virtual-reality station that transports users to the top of the Opera House’s famous exterior sails, as well as a ‘Cultural Institute’ station, where Samsung’s Galaxy View and Galaxy Tab S2 tablets allow visitors to cycle through more than 50 online exhibits highlighting the landmark’s past, present and future.

The Lounge at the Sydney Opera House is a landmark example of how cutting-edge digital signage can enhance storytelling capabilities that ultimately foster unique and memorable experiences. By implementing first-class display technology in one of the world’s most famous buildings and busiest performing arts centers, Samsung continues to define entertainment and hospitality environments of the future.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, today announced a new line-up of chip scale package (CSP) LED modules for spotlights and downlights that features color tunability and increased design compatibility.

“Our new CSP LED modules provide an optimal solution for lighting manufacturers who seek highly compatible and reliable LED components,” said Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President, LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to strengthen its CSP technology leadership and spearhead new innovations in LED component technology to bring greater value to our customers.”

The new LED modules are Samsung’s first to incorporate CSP technology, which bring a wide range of lighting benefits such as significantly reducing the size of a conventional LED package. The combination of advanced flip chip and phosphor coating technology eliminates metal wires and plastic molds to enable more compact designs when manufacturing LED modules and fixtures.

In addition to their size advantage, Samsung’s new CSP LED modules deliver further characteristics that furnish seamless tunable color. A color-tunable LED module requires twice the number of LED packages in cool and warm temperature, which work in combination on the same board to create a range of tunable colors. In contrast to conventional plastic-molded LED packages that inevitably increase the size of the modules, Samsung’s ultra-compact chip scale LED packages allow the module size to remain unchanged.

Samsung’s new CSP LED modules are available in two form factors (19x19mm or 28x28mm) and are designed following Zhaga specifications, making them highly convenient in assembling. The modules also provide high-quality lighting in diverse beam angle options – spot, medium, wide – for improved compatibility with the optical solutions of Samsung’s partners. The new modules are based on CSP LED packages that have successfully completed 9,000 hours of LM-80 testing, a level of proven performance that reduces the time to market for lighting manufacturers.

Samsung is now sampling six models of the new CSP LED module in CRI 80 and 90 with varying lumen output, size and CCT specifications. The full line-up includes:

Samsung’s SMART Outdoor Signage offers an all-purpose solution for businesses looking to display vivid visuals in even the most demanding environments. Backed by an ultra-durable design, SMART Outdoor Signage is built to rebuff the typical wear and tear associated with both inclement weather and life in bustling urban jungles, allowing businesses greater versatility to broadcast their stories and create meaningful impressions.

Behind the sleek contours and svelte, 85mm frame are certifiably rugged specs. SMART Outdoor Signage is IP56-certified dust- and water-resistant and designed to deliver crisp visuals in demanding situations. Also, an anti-Infrared-coat cuts off heat from outside the panel while a water-proof cooling fan helps regulate temperatures, allowing the display to operate in a wide temperature range of -30˚C to 50˚C.

The Magic Glass screen features a 5,000 to 1 contrast ratio, reflection reduction technology and 2,500-nit brightness, completing a design that ensures that your visuals are not only physically reinforced, but optimally displayed at a quality validated by TÜV Rheinland.

Samsung’s SMART Outdoor Signage may be rooted in utility, but it also fosters great creativity. Such versatility in design offers businesses more unique entry points to display their content, and creates more opportunities to sync messaging with the pulse of the city around it. The result is an easy-to-install, all-in-one creative solution from the world’s leading display and signage company that allows your business’s visuals to make a mark on their environment, and not vice versa.

One of Europe’s busiest intersections now has a new tenant – one capable of displaying brilliant, captivating stories high above the area’s bustling streets.

In partnership with Super 8, founders of City Lights, Samsung Electronics completed a prominent commercial installation of its P6 display in Madrid’s Plaza Callao in June.

The vertical display is integrated seamlessly on the exterior of one of the plaza’s tallest buildings, and runs 6 meters by 37 meters in size. With its optimal placement – the plaza is considered the heart of Madrid’s shopping and entertainment district, seeing more than 51,000 cars each day and 113 million people each year – the new P6 outdoor LED signage offers prime visibility for advertisers to deliver captivating content.

Samsung’s P6 LED signage features several additional enhancements that refine picture quality. The displays incorporate the industry’s highest quality diodes to create deeper contrast and a wider viewing angle. Enhanced resolution (960 x 5760) and a rich color presentation further foster lifelike picture quality, making the Samsung LED display an ideal choice for Plaza del Callao.

The unique composition of the P6 LED signage further ensures long-term performance, and enables local businesses to reach passersby with uninterrupted and uncompromised messaging at any hour of the day. A high-resolution Surface Mount Diode (SMD) board and cabinet structure extend the signage’s lifespan and guarantee continuous performance for up to 100,000 hours. Additionally, each P6 series display includes embedded temperature control and ventilation management technologies that further reduce energy and overall ownership costs.

As Samsung and Super 8 bring their new P6 vertical display to life, Samsung is already looking ahead to future opportunities to expand its outdoor LED footprint in other global markets later this year.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, announced today that it has introduced “Fx-CSP”, a line-up of LED packages which features chip-scale packaging* and flexible circuit board technology, for use in automotive lighting applications.

“Our new Fx-CSP line-up will bring greater design flexibility and cost competitiveness to the automotive lighting industry,” said Jacob Tarn, executive vice president, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. He added that, “We will continue to introduce innovative LED products and technologies, such as multi-chip array technology, that can play a key role in the growth of the automotive LED lighting industry.”

Samsung’s new Fx-CSP provides an advanced combination of chip-scale packaging and flexible circuit board technology, which together enable more compact chip sizing and a higher degree of reliability. The use of a flexible circuit board also enables more heat to dissipate, which leads to lower resistance and brings about a greater degree of lumen-per-watt efficiency than using a ceramic board.

In addition, the new Samsung automotive LED line-up allows car designers to use a variety of chip arrangements such as a single chip, a 1 by 4, or a 2 by 6 multi-chip arrangement to suit different lighting configurations. The Fx-CSP line-up can be widely used in automotive lighting applications that include position lamps** and daytime** running lamps as well as headlamps** that require higher luminous flux and reliability than other automotive lamps.

The Fx-CSP line-up consists of single packages, Fx1M and Fx1L, with 1-3 watts each, as well as packages with a 14W high voltage array, Fx4 and a 40W high voltage array, Fx2x6. The variation in wattage levels allows Samsung LED lighting packages to work well with a wide range of exterior automotive lighting.

By adding the new Fx-CSP line-up to its existing mid-power and high-power automotive LED component line-ups, Samsung now provides a highly competitive family of automotive lighting components.

Samsung’s new Fx-CSP LED line-up was recently selected for a compact car headlamp project from one of the major global automotive manufacturers.

Samsung plans to introduce more CSP technology-based LED components such as the new Fx-CSP line-up for automotive lighting, later this year.

*Note 1: Samsung’s chip-scale package (CSP) is combination of advanced flip chip technology and phosphor coating technology. A CSP chip can be created by flipping over blue LED chips and then immediately coating them with a phosphor substance.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced components, today introduced a multi-purpose Smart Lighting Module (SLM) – the most fundamental IoT building block – for the fast-growing, smart building and smart city markets. By providing the core building block for a wide variety of potential smart lighting systems, Samsung’s SLM will play a key role in speeding up system development, lowering risk, improving system quality and reducing time to market for smart lighting manufacturers. The module will be sampled with Samsung smart lighting partners and will be shipped to OEMs in April.

“After announcing our smart lighting platform concept last year, we are now rolling out what can be considered the most critical component in a smart lighting system,” said Dr. Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “Our SLM solves many of the problems that OEMs are finding in today’s smart building and smart city IoT applications.”

Samsung’s SLM is at the heart of the Samsung Smart Lighting Platform, which is designed for integration with LED lighting systems in order to easily transform luminaires into smart, digital nodes. This Internet of Things (IoT) platform incorporates processing capabilities, firmware, connectivity and an open architecture connected to sensors for collecting data and creating new applications.

As the core element of the Smart Lighting Platform, the SLM serves as the essential connector for all types of devices used in smart luminaires including sensors and drivers. The new smart lighting module offers several ports for greater flexibility in making hardware connections, and a script engine that simplifies firmware connections. These allow OEMs to customize a smart lighting device to their needs much faster, permitting development time to be 50 percent shorter or even better with the SLM than without it.

The new Smart Lighting Module also features wireless software update functionality (OTA) and power metering. The SLM enables most smart devices to talk to one another by supporting all open wired and wireless communication protocols, utilizing not only Zigbee or DALI, but also the Bluetooth protocol. It seamlessly connects to most sensor networks and effectively interacts with smart control devices such as mobile phones. This enables smart luminaires to serve as the nodes within a wide variety of smart lighting environments.

Samsung SLM comes in three different types, SLM-D, SLM-A and SLM-P. The SLM-D uses DC input voltage of approximately 12 to 24V from AUX power, while the SLM-A has full functionality with AC voltage from 120 to 277V, and the SLM-P is an upgraded version of SLM-A, which adds a power metering function.

Samsung said that it will reinforce its SLM as a leading end-to-end connectivity solution by forming partnerships with providers of smart components, LED drivers, sensors and gateways to cloud and analytics solutions. Already, Samsung has formed key partnerships with Daintree for indoor applications, Silver Spring Networks for outdoor applications and FLIR for thermal image applications.

Samsung will continue to expand its smart lighting partnerships to enhance the extent of its end-to-end connectivity solution. Samsung will demonstrate its SLM and showcase most of its LED component line-ups at Booth B04 Hall6.2 of the Light + Building 2016 trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany, March 13th – 18th.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced component solutions, introduced a full line-up of chip-scale LED packages* (CSP), including 0.6W-class and 3W-class packages, CSP arrays, and PoW (Phosphor on Wafer) packages.

Samsung’s CSP technology significantly scales down the size of a conventional LED package by combining advanced flip chip** technology with phosphor coating technology, thereby eliminating any need for metal wires and plastic molds. This shift enables more flexible and compact designs when manufacturing LED lighting modules or fixtures, and lowers the production and operational costs of LED lighting systems. Samsung’s CSP products also allow for flexibility in adjusting the size of the light-emitting surface and its associated luminance level, to meet the diverse requirements of a wide variety of lighting applications including bulbs, spot lighting, downlighting and street lighting.

“Our new CSP products overcome what had been significant performance limitations of conventional LED packages. By expanding our CSP line-up, we expect to provide greater value to the LED lighting market, enabling new possibilities in LED lighting and giving our customers greater design flexibility,” said Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “We are aggressively innovating through the introduction of well-differentiated LED components, while further strengthening our presence in the LED marketplace in terms of technology and cost.”

The new CSP line-up has been fortified with a wide range of operating current options from 0.6W to 3W and even 10W LED packages. The new packages complete Samsung’s CSP technology roadmap, which was announced at LIGHTFAIR International 2015 when the company’s CSP technology commercialization plan was unveiled.

Samsung’s LM101A and LM102A packages are available in full color temperatures with three color rendering index options from CRI 70 to CRI 80 and CRI 90.

High-power, 3W-class CSP LED package – LH181A

The LH181A is a high-power CSP package that features approximately 12 percent higher luminous flux*** at a maximum current of 1.5A, compared to Samsung’s 3W-class ceramic-based high-power LED package. The LH181A offers a high luminous flux, typically at around 162lm/W (@350mA, Ra70, 5000K).

Each LH181A measures 1.91×1.91mm, which is about 30 percent smaller than Samsung’s ceramic-based LED solution. The package’s ultra-small size enables much smaller lighting designs and better lm/$ (lumens per dollar) value that can be especially useful in outdoor and spot lighting applications.

The LH181A provides a wide beam angle of 140 degrees making it also applicable to street lighting by adding a lens as a secondary optic solution.

CSP Arrays – LH204A & LH309A

Samsung’s CSP arrays, the LH204A and the LH309A, are high-power LED solutions with an operating wattage range from 5W to 10W. The LH204A is a 2×2 array of CSP LED chips that delivers 12V at a 5W-class operating wattage, while the LH309A is a 3×3 chip array offering 26V at a 10W-class operating wattage.

The CSP arrays provide high light quality by adhering a single phosphor to the FX (flexible) circuit board on which tiny CSP LED chips with low thermal resistance are arranged. The use of a thin flexible-film FX circuit board accentuates the thin design of the arranged CSP LED chips. The CSP arrays are suitable for spotlighting applications where high light quality is required from a single light source.

Next-generation CSP solution – PoW (Phosphor-on-Wafer) LED package

Samsung’s Phosphor-on-Wafer (PoW) LED package technology embraces the advantages of CSP LED packaging, while overcoming limitations of cost reduction by upgrading the chip manufacturing process through the use of 8-inch GaN-on-Si wafers instead of 4-inch sapphire wafers. This transition will enable a higher quality CSP LED package by eliminating the chip rearrangement process. The reason for this is that the phosphors can be directly coated on the surface of the GaN-on-Si wafers before being diced, while sapphire wafers have to be cut into chips first and then rearranged to be coated with phosphor.

By simplifying the LED component manufacturing process and improving LED package quality, the PoW LED package technology is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the LED lighting industry.

Samsung has already applied its PoW technology to 4-inch wafers in flash LED packages for mobile devices since several years ago. Samsung also plans to utilize the PoW technology for its new CSP product line-up for lighting applications by the end of this year.

Samsung will showcase the new CSP products and technologies at the Light + Building 2016 event under the theme “Lighting & Beyond” in Frankfurt, Germany, March 13th – 18th. Visit Booth B04, Hall6.2 to learn more about Samsung’s differentiated LED technologies and innovative component solutions.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced components, introduced inFlux, a new lineup of high-flux (extremely bright), linear LED modules optimized for industrial lighting applications such as plants, parking lots and warehouses. The LED modules serve as a replacement for conventional T8 and T5HO (high output) tubes and are suitable for high-flux LED luminaires covering up to 40,000lm (luminous flux*).

“By providing a wide variety of installation layout options and brightness intensities, our new inFlux linear module will deliver greater design flexibility and convenience for lighting designers, as well as high performance and reliability for fixture manufacturers,” said Jaewook Kwon, Vice President, Lighting Marketing Group, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to reinforce our well-differentiated LED lighting engine lineups to be able to meet more diverse market needs.”

The Samsung inFlux LED module incorporates the company’s mid-power LED package (LM301A), which features advanced “flip chip” technology that enables a shorter junction-to-base distance and less thermal barrier layers in each package, while avoiding the need for metal wire bonding. This leads to lowering the thermal resistance of the packages, and permits each package to handle a wide range of current with improved light efficacy. Fully embracing the flip chip LED approach, the new inFlux modules can provide better light performance, wider current alternatives and much lower heat resistance than modules using a conventional epi-up chip package.

High-efficacy mid-power packages bring additional benefits to customers, compared to using high-power packages. Mid-power packages can be placed more densely than high-power packages, which results in minimizing light deviation and increasing light uniformity of the inFlux module lineup. By utilizing a mid-power package, the inFlux lineup also brings cost benefits to manufacturers.

Samsung inFlux modules are available in six product types. Each type comes in a different flux range between 1,310lm and 9380lm with a length option, either 280 millimeters (mm) or 560mm, and offers several CCT color variations, including 3000, 3500, 4000 and 5000K. These product alternatives will offer lighting fixture makers more design flexibility in addressing a wide variety of application requirements. Through a combination of different module types, LED fixture manufacturers can vary their lamp flux from 6,000lm to 40,000lm.

The Samsung inFlux modules have been UL/cUL certified (U.S.), as well as CE and ENEC certified (Europe), and carry a 10-year warranty.

Samsung also makes it easier for fixture makers to take their lighting products through industry certification processes, thanks to cooperative relationships that Samsung LED has established with recognized certification companies in the U.S., Korean, European and Chinese markets. These “partnerships” will simplify complex procedures, reduce time to market and ultimately have a positive impact on overall costs.
