Thankfully, the Galaxy S10 is here to help.

Originally designed to give you the power to add background blur to your portraits, the Galaxy S10 offers a new selection of blur effects, allowing you to create a variety of artistic photos.

The new effects include zoom, spin, blur and color point. The latter option makes your subject stand out by keeping them in full color while painting the rest of the photo in black and white. When shooting in Live Focus mode, the new background options, as well as a slider that allows you to adjust the intensity of the effect you want to apply, appear just above the shutter button.

You can preview your selections in real-time, but if you’re still not happy after you take the shot don’t worry – you can choose a new effect and make adjustments in the Gallery app even after you’ve taken the picture.

2. Fit the Whole Shoreline in with the Ultra Wide Lens

While you’re enjoying a morning walk down the beach with your pup, make sure you spend some time taking in the scenery with the Galaxy S10’s Ultra Wide lens. Whether you’re trying to capture dramatic skies, or expansive shorelines, the 16MP Ultra Wide lens offers a 123-degree field-of-view so you can make your summer photos more interesting. Simply enter the camera app and click on the icon with three trees above the shutter button to use the Ultra Wide lens.

3. Get a Dog’s Perspective with Super Steady

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like from your dog’s point of view? The next time you’re out for a walk in the park, you can capture their perspective with the Galaxy S10’s Super Steady video stabilization, which allows you to record video without any shakiness. Super Steady can be toggled right in the Video menu and, once turned on, allows the Galaxy S10 to optimize your recording, whether you’re bombing downhill on a bike or capturing a booty-shaking corgi on a summer evening walk, so you get fluid, steady action in your videos every time.

5. Post Your Best Shots Straight to Instagram

Our best memories deserve to be shared, and the easiest way to show your friends and family what you’re up to is by posting straight to Instagram social media with the Galaxy S10’s Instagram mode. You will first have to install the app and set up an Instagram account for the option to appear in the menu above the shutter button in the Samsung Camera app. Once your account is ready, simply select the Instagram mode from the menu, take your photo or video, and you will be taken directly to Instagram where you can share what you captured in your Instagram Stories.

6. Shoot Stunning Sunsets at the Park

One of the best parts of summer is taking in the purple and pink skies of late evening sunsets – but getting crisp shots can be difficult in the fading light. As the above images shot with the 12MP Wide main camera demonstrate, the Galaxy S10 is capable of delivering incredible low-light performance. The Galaxy S10’s Super Slow-mo is the perfect tool to capture those moments, shooting in 960fps and capable of extending 0.4 seconds of action into a 14.8 second clip. Choose the Super Slow-mo option from the menu above the shutter button in the Samsung Camera app and hit record. After capturing the action, the Galaxy S10 processes it for you and produces a Super Slow-mo video in 720p HD resolution ready for your next social media post.

The Galaxy S10 5G’s rear camera photo and video capabilities were both ranked number one on the DxOMark Mobile scale, achieving an overall score of 112, with 117 in photo and 100 in video, the first device to hit 100 bar. DxOMark’s testing recognizes that the Galaxy S10 5G’s rear camera features fast and accurate autofocus, capturing photos that have a good level of detail preservation, color rendering and exposure under various conditions.

The Galaxy S10 5G also scored first place on the DxOMark Selfie ranking for its front camera with an overall score of 97, receiving a score of 101 in the photo category, and 90 in the video category. To evaluate the Galaxy S10 5G’s camera performance, DxOMark tested Exposure and Contrast, Color, Autofocus, Texture, Noise, Flash, Artifacts, Zoom and Bokeh under low light, indoor and bright light conditions.

The Galaxy S10 5G features a professional-grade camera set-up with a total of six cameras – two on the front and four on the back. Its Dual Pixel AF Selfie front-facing camera takes next-level selfies, and the rear-facing camera benefits from Samsung’s Ultra Wide Lens, for those who want to create and share stunning content effortlessly. For the Galaxy S10 line, Samsung brought new, advanced hardware and software-based technologies to the camera, including cutting-edge, AI-powered features. In order to learn more about the phones’ pro-grade camera system – which features an Ultra Wide lens, Super Steady video recording, and a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) – Samsung Newsroom sat down with Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division’s camera developers and product planner.

The Power of the Ultra Wide Lens

The secret to taking incredible photos with the Galaxy S10 line is the Ultra Wide lens. The addition of the Ultra Wide lens was a major moment for Samsung, and represents one of the biggest changes to the Galaxy series in generations. Now, users can capture every detail of an epic landscape, or fit the entire family into one group shot without having to move back.

“Users expect more than just improved image quality with a new device. They want a camera that makes it easier to take amazing photos,” explained product planner Sunyong Kim. “The Ultra Wide lens features a 123-degree field of view, just like the human eye, so you can easily capture the moment just as you see it.”

With the Ultra Wide lens, users can easily take dynamic pictures using the camera’s Live Focus function and Panorama mode. “Live Focus has been available on previous Samsung devices with the Telephoto and Wide-angle lenses, but for the Galaxy S10 line, we brought it to the Ultra Wide lens as well,” noted Sugon Baek. “What’s more, Panorama mode offers more vertical scope than previous models did, and greatly reduces the need to move the camera from left to right in order to capture the full shot.”

Shake-Free Video Quality

Another new innovation that’s built into the Galaxy S10 line is the camera’s Super Steady video-recording feature, which offers users enhanced video stabilization.²

Super Steady works by using VDIS (Video Digital Image Stabilization) technology. It predicts user movements before filming starts, and once the camera is running, it calculates the adjustment range to minimize shakiness in videos.

“In the past, achieving optimum video stabilization meant sacrifices for the camera’s angle of view,” noted Wonseok Song. “A conventional wide-angle camera couldn’t solve the problem. But thanks to the Ultra Wide lens, the S10 is able to support a natural viewing angle while also offering stability and quality.”

Given that the adjustment capability of the Super Steady technology is best for capturing bigger movements, Song has a tip for users filming in different conditions: “For scenes that feature less action in low light, use the camera’s normal mode. For brighter scenes that feature more movement, Super Steady is best.”

A Camera That’s Smart

The Galaxy S10 doesn’t just have the most advanced camera system on a Galaxy phone, it also has the smartest. In a first for Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy S10 includes a next-generation NPU that automatically optimizes pictures in up to 30 different categories.

“We added 10 additional categories to optimize common photos, including ‘Dog,’ ‘Drink,’ and ‘Shoe,’” explained Seoyoung Lee. ‘Dog’ mode, she added, optimizes users’ pictures by focusing on fine details, such as strands of fur, whereas categories like ‘Shoe’ and ‘Clothing’ focus on objects’ colors, since most pictures of these objects are taken without people’s faces in the frame. “We also added ‘Drink’ category because we noticed the growing trend of people sharing pictures of their cocktails on social media.”

The Galaxy S10 line’s camera also provides suggestions of ways to potentially improve photos through its Shot Suggestion function. Based on the Galaxy S10 line’s machine learning capabilities, Shot Suggestion references a database of over 100 million users’ pictures to offer helpful tips on improving overall composition, positioning and proportions for photos of various subjects, including people, animals and vehicles. “The AI-based suggestions have been developed not just to prioritize putting the subject at the center of a photo,” said Lee. “That way, no matter how you want to set up your shot, the Galaxy S10 will help you do it in the most striking way possible.”

Seeing the Whole Picture

In developing the Galaxy S10 line’s camera, the team focused on engineering technologies that add real value to the camera experience, rather than simply increasing the number of lenses and features available.

“The camera is for more than documenting and recording,” explained Kim. “It is now the means through which we communicate.”

From the Ultra Wide lens, to Super Steady, to the NPU – and to other features, like Instagram mode, new filters, enhanced Bixby Vision, and easy shifting between lenses – the Galaxy S10 helps users do more with their camera than they ever could before. For all of those users who say a great camera is the top feature they’re looking for in a smartphone, Samsung has planted the flag.

For those times when you need to get a little closer to your subject, the Telephoto lens provides two times optical zoom and ten times digital zoom.

Each Galaxy S10 comes equipped with a 10MP UHD Dual Pixel front-facing camera that’s perfect for taking high-quality selfies. The Galaxy S10+’s dual front camera setup offers improved megapixels and super-fast autofocus,² and includes an RGB depth lens for enhanced quality of bokeh effects.

A Smarter Way to Shoot

The Galaxy S10’s hardware is complemented by a next-generation Neural Processing Unit (NPU) – a layer of intelligence for all your photos – that streamlines image processing and makes already smart features better.

The addition of the advanced NPU makes the camera’s Scene Optimizer function that much more powerful. Now, Scene Optimizer is capable of analyzing even more complex scenes, and can simultaneously process more image recognition data than before. The camera recognizes up to 30 different types of scenes in all (up from 20 with the Galaxy Note9), including “Face,” “Baby,” “Dog,” “Vehicles,” and more. The function will also automatically optimize the color, saturation, white balance and contrast in order to ensure that the image you see on your screen appears as true to life as possible.

When the camera recognizes specific scenes, it will also suggest other ways to potentially improve your photo. For example, if you’re taking a picture of a sunrise, the camera will automatically ask you if you’d like to switch to the Ultra Wide lens to ensure that you capture the scene in all its glory. If you’re taking a picture in extreme low-light conditions, it will propose that you take a Bright Night Shot for a professional-quality picture.

The camera also offers users instant, automatic recommendations on how to best frame their photo through its Shot Suggestion feature. Utilizing a database of over 100 million pictures, Shot Suggestion’s composition guide offers helpful tips to help you improve your photo’s proportions, positioning and overall composition.

The camera’s upgraded Live Focus mode allows you to customize your photos with artistic effects. The Galaxy S10+ utilizes its dual front cameras to support the feature, which includes options to add new spin bokeh, zoom bokeh, and color point effects, while the Galaxy S10 and S10e’s front-facing camera utilizes the NPU’s intelligence.

The camera’s Super Steady video-recording feature is the first of its kind on a smartphone, and offers users up to three times better video stabilization than conventional technologies. The Galaxy S10 5G truly packs the power of a professional-grade camera into your phone by offering a total of six lenses – two on the front and four on the back. In addition to featuring all of the lenses included in the Galaxy S10+, the 5G model introduces Samsung’s next-generation 3D Depth Camera.

This innovative camera allows the device to accurately capture depth by measuring the length of time it takes for an infrared light signal to bounce off the photograph’s subject. The camera uses the resulting depth information to improve the quality of portrait-style images, and to power exciting new features like Video Live focus and Quick Measure. The former allows you to apply cinema-quality bokeh effects to recorded videos, while the latter enables you to use your phone to instantly measure distance, area or volume.

Featuring an all-new camera setup and a revamped design, the devices are a fresh angle on Samsung’s high-end phones. Samsung Newsroom spoke with members of the Global Product Planning Group–product planners Minseung Baik, Kwangsub Bong, and Sunmoek Jung –who discussed how they injected a new DNA into the Galaxy A product line.

“Until now, the Galaxy A series felt like it was borrowing a lot of defining features from the flagship series,” explained Baik. “But now, the Galaxy A series has its own unique attributes. The new features include triple cameras for the Galaxy A7 and quad rear cameras on the Galaxy A9. These features are the signal flare of our new approach with the product line.”

His favorite of the new features is the Ultra Wide camera, citing its versatility. “When traveling you’ll often find yourself in situations where you can’t capture the whole scene on your phone – like a very long bridge or a large group of friends to capture in a single picture,” he said. “In these cases, you can choose the Ultra Wide camera and photograph the whole landscape. The lens will catch almost everything you can see, notably different from that taken with a normal smartphone camera with a 77° view.” Bong adds that it was about more than just making new lenses.

“We focused on creating new user experiences with the new multiple cameras,” said Bong. “People will be pleased to find, for example, more intuitive and smoother transitions when switching between camera functions. Other features include the ability to add a watermark to a photo, so users can add their own personal touch to their images.¹” It all adds up to a phone that, Jung says, better suits the younger generation than previous flagship devices.

“The motivations for the new product came from the behavior of millennials who like to use social networking services, vlogs and other multimedia systems for communication,” Jung continued. With usage patterns showing that smartphone cameras were mostly being used by millennials for taking selfies, traveling and nightlife, the team designed multiple cameras for both the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 to provide users with more options when they are taking snapshots – which, in other words, gives the younger generation an even wider variety of ways to express themselves through different types of photos. The new multiple cameras are all part of a new philosophy that seeks to bring truly unique features to the devices.

“The triple and quad cameras in the new Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 show our determination to implant innovative DNA in the Galaxy A series and deviate from the shadow of the flagship series,” explained Baik. “We didn’t want to sit around and wait for the smartphone market to evolve. We wanted to innovate with the Galaxy A series and I believe we have accomplished that. As we develop the product line, we will continue to differentiate it from the flagship series by creating its own core strengths and unique features.”

Common to both camera setups on the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 are a Depth camera and an Ultra Wide camera alongside the main camera. The Depth camera measures the depth of the image taken, allowing users to add a bokeh effect around their subject with Live Focus, while the Ultra Wide camera provides a 120° field of view, so users can capture the entire scene. The Galaxy A9 includes an added 10MP Telephoto lens with 2x Optical Zoom so that users can get up-close and personal with their subject, even when they are far away. Engineering all of those features to fit into one phone meant taking a whole new approach to the design.

“We had to use the space more efficiently if we wanted to mount more cameras,” explained Bong. “Taking into consideration the battery and other numerous key components, we decided to move the cameras on the side of the device in a single vertical row, a rather bold approach since cameras have been in the center on our flagship smartphones.”

He added, “We knew that design is one of the core elements that young millennials focus on when buying their phones,” pointing to the new gradient-style coloring of the devices. “So we wanted to showcase a new design in order to target young millennials better.”

The new Galaxy A9 devices come in a range of colors, including two unique gradient options in Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink. The gradient design was a feat of engineering in its own right, requiring trial and error to get the right look.

“We selected 3D glass material to emphasize the gradation effect and used glossy metal on the borders of the device to give it a nice shine,” said Bong. “For the Bubblegum Pink version, even the metal borders have the color gradation, making it look much prettier and polished.”

The result of these efforts is a smartphone designed for millennials who want a stylish and convenient mobile experience that brings the best of the Galaxy design heritage to suit their modern, busy lifestyles. With this new approach in mind, the Galaxy A series will continue to evolve to meet the needs of millennials and like-minded individuals in the future.
