Samsung affiliate PrinterOn has been a making a name for itself in cloud printing circles for 16 years. In fact, the company was pioneering in this field even in the days before people started using the term “cloud.”

The company began life as a Canadian document handling company. But in the late 1990s, PrinterOn realized that market was changing. It acted fast as the millennium approached, and first launched its cloud printing services in 2001.

Angus Cunningham, PrinterOn’s President and CEO, explains that timing was everything. He says, “We saw mobility as a strong and fast-developing market force. At the same time, we also realized mobile workers still needed to use traditional office tools as part of their work.”

Cunningham says PrinterOn foresaw a shift in the market. This led solution providers to shift their focus “from niche to mainstream needs.”

Cloud Breakthroughs

PrinterOn’s strategy paid dividends. Cunningham says businesses are now making key decisions with mobile matters in mind. “Cloud acceptance is clearly growing,” he notes. “Our vision of the cloud has allowed us to take a design-based approach. That means we can provide a broad base for all our current products.”

For smaller companies, however, spreading news of your developments is not always easy. Cunningham explains, “While we did see great opportunities, we faced limitations in terms of developing our business. As we were a smaller business at the time, we had to focus on areas where we could drive up revenue.”

Shared Visions

Samsung Printing Solutions was impressed with PrinterOn’s vision for the future of mobile printing and began to take a keen interest. The two companies started talking in 2010 and signed preliminary agreements in 2013. Finally, in September 2014, Samsung and PrinterOn finalized a wide-ranging partnership deal.

It was a deal that brought immediate benefit to both parties. Cunningham says Samsung believed PrinterOn’s solutions would be compatible with a wide range of printers, and that they were “open-standard and agnostic.”

Says Cunningham, “Samsung also recognizes that most companies have a mixed set of printers. To better service that need, you need to be able to handle a diverse printer lineup.”

PrinterOn CEO Angus Cunningham uses a smartphone to manage a print job on a Samsung multifunction printer.

Going Global with Mobile Printing

The Samsung collaboration means PrinterOn can now deliver solutions to a much bigger market.

“We have always been strong in terms of R&D. But before we struck our partnership with Samsung, we did not have a huge marketing presence,” explains Cunningham. “For us to really get into the mainstream, we needed a good partner. With Samsung, we have much more in the way of worldwide technical resources. Our product and R&D teams can access these to speed up their product and service development.”

And the collaborative advantages do not stop there. The PrinterOn chief adds, “There are now more eyes to look at our products, and more minds to consider market needs as we develop new solutions. Samsung told us, ‘If you need something, let us know and we’ll make it happen.’”

Security Matters

Many IT decision makers say security is a concern when it comes to mobile printing and cloud services. That is why PrinterOn’s solutions help ease such concerns. These include high-grade end-to-end encryption, which ensures sensitive documents stay safe.

“Security awareness is part of our culture,” says Cunningham. “We review our own security as part of the development process. We also encourage our customers to perform their own security audits and to share the results with us. We then use this feedback and incorporate it directly into our product development.”

New Horizons

PrinterOn now offers a range of cloud and mobile printing services suitable for companies of all sizes. Cunningham says, “All our product lines are in a state of growth.”

And PrinterOn sees big opportunities in the mobility sector. This, explains Cunningham, is another area where the Samsung partnership can help. PrinterOn solutions developments also can also add value across multiple Samsung businesses.

Most importantly, says, Cunningham, the partnership offers plenty of potential for future growth. He says, “Enterprises are going more mobile than ever. As mobile devices become more powerful, the scope for integration will only continue to broaden.”

Samsung Electronics has been recognised by global market intelligence organization IDC, as a major player, in its MarketScape report on the managed print and document services (MPDS) industry: ‘Western Europe Managed Workflow Services 2015 Hardcopy Vendor Assessment – Building on MPDS’.

“IDC’s recognition of Samsung Printing Solutions affirms our ongoing commitment to help organizations boost business efficiency by improving how they digitise paper and manage their printing,” said Paul Birkett, Director of Print Operation Sales and Marketing of Samsung Europe. “In the newest areas of mobile-first, cloud-first printing, Samsung is helping clients connect to the information they need, by merging mobile and printing technology in its Smart UX platform. This uses standard mobile apps to reduce repetitive or wasteful tasks through advanced machine-to-machine communication.”

The study is the first vendor analysis of the managed workflow services (MWS) market using the IDC MarketScape assessment tool. The report evaluates the capabilities and business strategies of leading hardcopy vendors in the Western European MWS market, and discusses the quantitative and qualitative characteristics that position vendors for success. The report also examines vendors’ capabilities of providing clients with a roadmap for higher-value workflow automation, and the optimization services required to deliver this effectively.

In particular, the IDC MarketScape report recognised Samsung’s use of emerging cloud and mobile technologies, as well as intuitive hardware products and value added services that extend beyond print. These include business process management, mobile print, mobile capture and digital signature services, which all extend Samsung’s IT portfolio. Samsung was also praised for the printing solutions partnerships and alliances it is forging worldwide.

IDC also remarked on Samsung’s ability to draw on expertise and innovation from other areas of its business, stating that its strength in consumer electronics is an advantage, because of the growing influence consumers now have in the world of work.

“Samsung’s key strengths are its application development and use of innovative solutions which include more than one Samsung product line,” IDC MarketScape reported. “Its focus on security alongside its rapid development helps the company gain traction with potential customers, while some competitors are still trying to dissipate security fears associated with solutions adoption.”

”Managed workflow services market players are continuing to develop their offerings to address challenging process workflows in their customers’ organizations,” said Jacqui Hendriks, Research and Consulting Manager, IDC European Managed Print Services and Document Solutions. “Established Western European market players have taken cautious steps and are more aggressively fulfilling customers’ functional and industry-specific workflow requirements,” she added.

For the MarketScape demonstration, Samsung focused on its new products and solutions incorporating mobile functionality and the intuitive interfaces common to multi-function printers, tablets and smartphones.

Today’s customers are eager for mobile printing solutions. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC):

The needs of mobile users for mobile printing have increasing sharply from 16% in 2011 to 49% in 2015. This means that currently, almost half of all mobile users want access to mobile printing.

The paradigm of the printing market is shifting. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) based on volume of pages of non-mobile printing is forecasted to increase by only 2.2 %. However, the CAGR by volume of pages of mobile printing is estimated to increase by 20 % in the same period (2008-2016).

Though the use of mobile printing is expected to grow, the largest barrier for its popularization is the misconception that it is too difficult to adopt.

Making Mobile Printing Easy

Recently, Samsung started equipping almost every printing product with mobile printing functions like NFC tagging, mobile printing applications, cloud printing and more for making mobile printing easily accessible for all mobile users.

Now, Samsung Mobile Print compatible product series are even more than 170. Also, Samsung’s Cloud Print compatible series are more than 90 and will boost the number of its series more than 110 by next month.

The Freedom of Mobile Printing

Samsung applied mobile printing function in 2010 for the first time. Now, Samsung’s fourth generation mobile printing solution is providing the easiest and most convenient way to print from smart devices.

Samsung Mobile Print features instant mobile printing directly from mobile to printer for printing photos or documents saved on mobile devices without a PC. It doesn’t require data usage and is able to connect through Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, even when accessing the cloud. Samsung Mobile Print also provides powerful image editing functions like on a PC. It includes 14 features for instant enhancement, color adjustment, effects and other modifications, such as cropping and rotation. No other mobile printing solution offers such a wide-range of editing functions. Single-tap pairing between users’ smart devices and printers, offered through NFC tagging, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi and USB connection makes Samsung Mobile Print the easiest to use. And its mobile printing app for customizing preferences and keeping menus neat and clutter-free includes cloud services and access to social networking sites.

Printing from the Cloud

For small office and home office (SOHO) businesses, Samsung introduced Cloud Print Public last May.

Samsung Cloud Print Public is a perfect solution because it offers a high-quality print experience from mobile devices. It supports each file up to 16 MB, utilizing unique rendering software based on the cloud to convert files into print-ready documents without any loss of quality, which is superior to other mobile printing solutions. Cloud printing technology enables simple device-to-printer connection without a PC for a hassle-free experience. With no need for a Wi-Fi connection or print drive, users can print quickly and effortlessly from any location, regardless of network. It only takes four simple steps to install the cloud printing app and pair your device with a printer, even without a local network connection. The sign-up process can be completed with a phone number, without creating a new account. Scanned files can be sent to users’ mobile applications or cloud storage. Cloud preview enables users to remove unnecessary pages. Both of these features, along with secure pairing with NFC tag-and-go technology are available only through Samsung.

Enhanced Security for the Future of Business

During the second half of this year, Samsung will launch additional cloud printing solutions with enhanced security features for small to medium businesses (SMB). It will also improve overall mobile printing solutions to give seamless business experiences on any devices, anytime, anywhere.

Samsung is helping people around the world enjoy seamless, intuitive lifestyles with innovative printing technology. And through these technologies, Samsung is leading the mobile printing market.

Last year, 300 Samsung multifunction copiers armed with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology were installed at the Doha International Airport in Qatar. Travelers can use these NFC printers to print tickets or other travel documents. Users found this service relieved them from the pain of searching for a wireless network at the crowded airport.

Korean International School is also using Samsung’s cutting-edge cloud printing solution to enable students and teachers to easily print documents virtually anywhere, with any device.

Mobile Printing Made Easier

When we combine NFC technology with printing, the result is a simpler mobile printing solution. As long as your mobile is near your printer, you have the ability to print, even without a computer. Intelligent technology makes it easy-to-use, and simplicity is its biggest benefit.

Mobile printing with NFC technology works in a very straightforward way. To activate it, tap the NFC icon on your device, place your phone near a printer for NFC tagging, select the document or image, then print. This works with any NFC-enabled printer, not just your own. Images can also be uploaded to cloud storage by using an NFC-enabled scanner.

Leading the Industry

After the release of smart devices in 2010, Samsung introduced a variety of innovative mobile printing solutions to the market. In 2013, it launched the world’s first NFC-enabled color laser printer, which created strong momentum for Samsung to solidify its market leadership in the mobile printing world. Samsung is now using the NFC mobile printing function for almost every printing solution.

Samsung launched Samsung Cloud Print Public on May, 2015. Because business is often conducted while on-the-go, users can print securely wherever, whenever from their mobile devices with Samsung Cloud Print.

These versatile solutions provide users with remote printing from a phone, tablet or PC, as well as file sharing between phones and sending documents by fax from a phone, all performed simply and seamlessly. After unveiling Samsung Cloud Print, the company opened new business opportunities within various verticals, providing them with invaluable printing solutions.

The Future of Mobile Printing

Samsung is strengthening its mobile printing leadership by partnering with other innovative firms who have technological expertise. Last year, Samsung acquired PrinterOn, a pioneer in mobile cloud printing solutions, which reinforced Samsung’s mobile ecosystem and delivers enhanced solutions. Samsung is currently working with a mobile network operator in Europe to develop a cloud printing and charging solution based on the Samsung Cloud Print platform.

The mobile and cloud printing solution boasts speed, image quality and convenience. However, this is not the end of story. Multifunction printers will soon double as an enterprise security solution.

Early next year, the NFC-Pro (tentatively) will be launched. It supports simple, tag-based user identification and thereby can serve as a security solution. Office workers usually scan their employee cards to enter businesses, but this requires unnecessary expenses of installing card readers. The NFC-Pro enables a printer to identify employees entering via smartphones.

Samsung continues to develop the most convenient and easiest mobile printing solutions, which will offer the greatest value to every mobile device user.
