Q. The type of LCD panel used in a gaming monitor is key in determining how it displays. How did you select the right one for the CFG70?

Hoseong Seo: Gaming monitors feature different types of LCD panels, namely Twisted Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), and In-Plane Switching (IPS) or Plane to Line Switching (PLS). But to meet our requirements for image quality and response time, there was really only one answer.

The CFG70 features a VA panel, which provides a high contrast range, rich color and a wide viewing angle. We chose a VA not only because they’re the optimal panels for curved monitors, which are scientifically proven to be more visually comfortable, but also because it integrated perfectly with our Quantum dot technology, allowing us to deliver supreme image quality.

Most VA panels feature an MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time – the standard for measuring the “motion blur” of rapidly moving objects in a sequence of images) of between 4 and 6 milliseconds. The CFG70’s, however, is just 1ms.

Q. What steps did you take to achieve that 1-millisecond mark?

Hoseong Seo: The difference is in the CFG70’s impulsive scanning technology. With older, CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors, when a scene changes, the screen will very quickly turn off and back on. The human eye compensates for the gap, and the user sees seamless visuals without motion blur. LCD monitors, on the other hand, do not turn off when a scene changes, which makes them susceptible to motion-blur issues.

Impulsive scanning technology reduces motion blur by regulating a monitor’s backlight between each scene. The conventional method to address this issue is to control the backlight from the center of the screen, but this may allow motion blur to remain in the upper and lower areas.

The CFG70’s backlights are divided into four sections that synchronize with image frames to eliminate motion blur across its screen.

The CFG70 features advanced “four-channel” impulsive scanning technology, which is more precise. It creates a cleaner visual experience by dividing the screen into four sections to remove motion blur more efficiently, and Samsung was the first to apply it to create a 1ms monitor.

Q. How did you anticipate gamers would respond to the CFG70’s advanced technology?

Hyang Go: Well, while it’s true that gamers greatly value innovation in their visual displays, not all will ultimately choose to buy the products with the most advanced technologies. One reason for this is simply because not everyone sees the difference.

We believe that the CFG70 curved gaming monitor’s strengths are very clear, however, and we wanted to give gamers an opportunity to see for themselves. So we invited some gamers to participate in a blind test comparing the visuals produced by its 1ms response time and impulsive scanning technology with those of competing gaming monitors.

Ten out of the 11 participants deemed the CFG70 superior, which is a testament to our development team’s hard work. One particularly perceptive participant even pointed out motion blur at the top and bottom of one of the other monitors’ screens, which proves the impulsive scanning technology’s effectiveness.

Q. How do you believe the CFG70 will ultimately enrich the gaming experience?

Hoseong Seo: Most gamers will carefully examine a number of different specs when choosing a monitor. Though other monitors may match the CFG70’s specs, we believe users of the CFG70 will see a real difference in visual performance.

In the end, the CFG70’s response time, along with its Quantum dot color and four-channel impulsive scanning technology, will allow users to enjoy a much more realistic and visually immersive gaming experience than they’d get with other gaming monitors on the market today.

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has sold more than one million curved monitor products worldwide. The global display provider introduced its first curved LED monitor – the 27-inch, 4000R (curvature radius of 4,000 mm) SD590C model – in September 2014, and since has expanded its line-up to include several additional curved monitors. With the release of its CF591 and CF390 monitors, Samsung continues to elevate its pioneering curved display design to offer even greater visibility and user comfort. These best-in-class 1800R curvature monitors match the natural shape of the human eye, providing a more natural viewing experience.

Both the CF591 and CF390 monitors are equipped with a host of features that further reduce visual fatigue and accommodate long-term business and consumer use. Each display leverages Samsung’s flicker-free and Eye Saver technologies to maintain presentation consistency and reduce strain on users’ eyes. Embedded AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI^® functionality synchronizes screen refresh rates with users’ AMD graphics cards to reduce input latency, stutter and lag during gaming and interactive content viewing. Samsung’s UE850 UHD business monitors offer enhanced visual clarity and ergonomic features to help professionals complete detail-oriented tasks. Through PLS panel technology, the exquisitely-designed UE850 monitors enable users to view screens horizontally and vertically at angles up to 178^o. Combined with UHD resolution four times greater than that of standard full HD (FHD) alternatives, these monitors deliver realistic and brilliantly-colored images. The SE370’s design includes a wireless charging pad where users can repower their Qi standard-compatible mobile devices while they work. Samsung Electronics invites CES 2016 attendees in need of a break from the rigors of the show floor to unwind within the confines of a virtual basketball court or battlefield. As part of a unique interactive showcase, Samsung transformed some of its CES booths (11906, 11929 and 12429 in the LVCC Central Hall) into the Ultimate Gaming Room, highlighting the enhanced immersion and comfort of its new gaming monitors, featuring games from Electronic Arts Inc. The opening of the Ultimate Gaming Room coincided with the unveiling at CES of Samsung’s first curved gaming monitors (CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF398.) These 1800R curvature monitors are designed to match the natural shape of the human eye, offering wide viewing angles while reducing strain on players’ eyes, even during extended use. Samsung’s curved gaming monitors further prevent eye fatigue through embedded flicker-free and Eye Saver technologies, which maintain a consistent visual presentation. Samsung Electronics announced that its five newest business monitors – the SE200, SE450, SE650, UE850 and UD970 models – have earned New Generation TCO Certified status from TCO Development, an international third-party sustainability certification provider.

Now in its seventh generation, the TCO Certified program recognizes products that meet a set of criteria for exceptional environmental design and socially responsible manufacturing. Available for eight different categories of consumer and business-facing technologies, TCO Certified ensures that manufacturing, use and recycling processes are carried out with consideration for environmental, social and economic responsibility. TCO Certified offers a structure and third party verification system for suppliers looking to meet growing buyer demand for more sustainable technologies.

Through rigorous testing, TCO Development verified that Samsung’s 2015 business monitor lineup meets all TCO Certified criteria. Each of Samsung’s tested monitors is composed of 30 percent recycled materials, among the highest levels in the industry. Additionally, Samsung’s newest business monitors include PVC-free materials, which do not emit environmental hormones or other hazardous substances. Individually, the SE450 and SE650 models include a built-in ECO Power Off function, which offers 0.00W off-mode power consumption.

As part of its sustainability certification, the TCO Certified program also recognizes technologies that promote more ergonomic and safe work conditions. Samsung’s 2015 business monitors meet these criteria as well, supported by a universal user-friendly design. These features include a height-adjustable stand (HAS) and swivel, tilt and pivot functionalities, which enable users to adjust and rotate screen dimensions to their desired comfort. A separate VESA-supported wall mount further stabilizes each display.

SE370 Monitor

Unlike their predecessors, monitors these days are equipped with a variety of functions; they can be utilized as TV sets, multi-media players or PCs with handy features including cloud computing and wireless battery charging for mobile devices. What we’re really witnessing is the rise of monitors as stand-alone devices.

In the past, a standard monitor had to work with a desktop PC, just like a needle and a thread. But things have changed now; we find ourselves amazed by the large number of monitors with unprecedented independence. Going beyond their previously simple roles as support devices, monitors are raising their own stakes by starting to work as independent IT devices.

Monitors Expand Their Roles to TV, Speakers and Multi-Media Players

Samsung’s 27-inch Curved TV Monitor, TD 590C not only functions as a monitor, but it can also be used as a second TV. The product gives users a mini-movie theatre of their own with its built-in 5W dual-stereo speaker and a curved screen that delivers a strong sense of immersion.

The TD 590C also comes with Samsung’s new handy feature, Football Mode, which provides a realistic experience—as if users are actually at the match—with life-like pictures and stereo sound. In addition, its picture in picture, PIP +, lets users enjoy two different multimedia content, at the same time. It can display a second video in an inset window, which is about one quarter of the screen.

The monitor’s graceful curves of the screen and of the stand, its luxurious metallic appearance and its clean back design visually enhance a customer’s bedroom or hotel room.

TD590C Monitor

Samsung also created a new model dedicated to multimedia features, which supports Smart TV functions. The TD390S (23.6-inch and 27-inch) can connect to Samsung TV’s Smart Hub, allowing people to watch a variety of TV programs, using exclusive applications. Using Smart Hub, the TD390 can consider users’ viewing patterns and suggest real-time broadcasts and TV content they may be interested in.

In addition, the TD390S lets users play games, watch videos via YouTube, Netflix and TED, and access weather forecasting services or daily feeds from numerous newspapers and broadcast media. The TD390S also supports Screen Mirroring, which allows users to enjoy the video content on their smart phones with its much bigger screen. Using the Content Sharing feature, users can send multiple types of media content, including pictures, music and videos, directly to the TD390S to enjoy.

ATIV One 7 Curved

Monitors Work as a PC and a Wireless Battery Charger

As more people replace their traditional desktop PCs with all-in-one counterparts these days, Samsung’s ATIV One 7 Curved (27-inch) is a leading choice. Although it looks like a simple monitor, it is actually a high-end, all-in-one PC that comes with an OS, CPU and data storage.

ATIV One 7 Curved can also perform as a customer’s secondary TV with its full HD curved display and Dolby home theatre audio. It supports Bluetooth Music Play 3.0, which lets users listen to the music in their smart phones with the monitor’s built-in 10W stereo speaker, by wirelessly connecting it to smart devices.

By successfully incorporating wireless charging functions in the monitors, Samsung accomplished another important innovation, taking the value of its products to the next level. Last month, Samsung released the SE370 (24-inch and 27-inch), the industry’s first monitor with an integrated wireless charging function for mobile devices on a charging area built into the monitor’s stand.

All the users need to do is place their smart phone (whether it’s a Galaxy S6, a Galaxy Note5 or any device using a compatible wireless battery cover) on the charging area to initiate automatic charging. The SE370 monitor declutters the work area by getting rid of unnecessary cables and ports needed to charge mobile devices. Thanks to its great performance and innovative features the free the users from desktop charging kits, the SE370 has been well-received by consumers around the world.

Monitors Play a Greater Role in the Office

Monitors are now serving greater roles in offices, serving as an extended screen for seamless collaboration between co-workers and for multi-tasking. In addition, they seem to enjoy greater independence as Virtual Display Infrastructure (VDI)—through which we procure necessary data and computing resource from an integrated server system without PCs—gets increasingly popular in business environments.

The SE 650·450·200, which are Samsung’s monitors for B2B, include health-conscious functions such as Eye Saver Mode and Flicker Free to ensure maximum comfort for our eyes. Also, they contribute greatly to reducing electricity costs in the office, thanks to their near-zero off-mode power consumption (0.005W) and Smart Eco Saving feature, which lowers their operational power use by approximately 10%.

Samsung also makes Samsung Cloud Display models dedicated to the VDI environment. As a result of Samsung’s partnership with VMware, Teradici and Microsoft, these models boast improved security and increased productivity. Businesses are free to choose from options based on their needs. Available models range from Samsung’s All-in-One models for optimized VDI performance to Box-Type alternatives that can work with existing monitors in use.

High-End Monitors to Show 50 Percent Surge in Average Annual Sales

Equipped with many different features, advanced functions and superior picture quality, stand-alone monitors are solidifying their presence in the market. According to IHS Technology, a leading market research firm, high-end monitors above WQHD (2,048×1,536 pixels) are expected to show rapid sales growth of approximately 52 percent annually until 2019.

Based on its competitiveness in the consumer electronics market, along with TV sets and smart devices, Samsung will continue to introduce new monitor products that deliver differentiated value to consumers.
