Samsung Electronics hosted its third annual Developer Day at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013, inviting over 500 app developers from around the world.

Following its successful bada Developer Day in 2011 and Samsung Developer Day last year, this is Samsung’s third consecutive appearance at App Planet, a dedicated developer event held during MWC. Building on last year’s successful event, Samsung this year doubled the size of its venue to showcase its latest platform technologies and content services.

One of the most popular sessions this year featured the introduction of the open API for the Samsung Wallet service, which allows users to collect coupons, membership cards, tickets, and boarding passes from partners’ applications and store them in one place. The service’s launching partners like Walgreens, Belly, Major League Baseball Advanced Media , Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com, and Lufthansa were announced during the session.

Demonstrating its commitment to the developer community, the founders of EA Chillingo joined Samsung to announce the launch of their new “100% Indie” initiative. This program allows independent developers who distribute their apps through Samsung Apps to retain 100 percent of all sales revenue during the first six months following an app launch.

Other popular sessions at the event included demonstrations of AdHub—a new advertising-based revenue-generating service for developers—and AllShare Framework, a tool that allows developers to apply cross-device convergence functionality into their applications. Additionally, Samsung introduced the latest iteration of its S Pen SDK—version 2.3—which enables developers to build applications that take advantage of S Pen functionality in Samsung’s flagship GALAXY Note and other applicable devices.

At its Developer Day, Samsung sets up exhibition zones to foster a collaborative atmosphere among attendees and give developers first-hand advice on Samsung’s latest tools and services. Samsung Electronics announced that its Smart LTE Networks has been awarded Best Mobile Infrastructure and Outstanding Overall Mobile Technology-The CTO’s choice at the Global Mobile Awards 2013 held by the GSMA at the annual Mobile World Congress.

The awards recognize the capacity of Samsung Smart LTE Networks to deliver not only exceptional network efficiency and performance, but also new revenue streams for operators by providing opportunities to enable value added services on the LTE network. In particular, the Outstanding Overall Mobile Technology prize, judged by CTOs from 16 leading mobile operators from around the world, is the highest industry accolade achievable at the prestigious annual awards.

Smart LTE Networks applies cloud computing capabilities at the edge of network to maximize network utilization through a unique radio resource allocation technology. This, in turn, enhances performance of VoLTE, SON and Carrier Aggregation. Smart LTE Networks also enables edge cloud applications for end-users, enabling the introduction of new services and revenue opportunities for carriers.

Samsung’s Smart LTE Networks was first commercialized in 2012 and is already proving its performance in Seoul, Korea, one of the densest urban areas in the world, with national carriers Korea Telecom and SK Telecom. The solution has also been proven in the European market with a successful field trial with Deutsche Telekom AG in Prague, Czech Republic. The Prague trial yielded results that demonstrated a significant increase of throughput capacity at the cell edge of up to 120%, and an overall average network throughput increase of 30%, dramatically improving the customer experience while simultaneously reducing operator CAPEX.

Samsung Electronics announced that it has won recognition from the GSM Association for the second year running in both the category of Device Manufacturer of the Year and Best Smartphone in the Global Mobile Awards, held at Mobile World Congress.   

Samsung was acclaimed by judges as the Device Manufacturer of the Year.  After achieving number one status in the total mobile phone market as well as in the smartphone market last year, the award recognised Samsung’s continued innovation and industry leading device portfolio.

GALAXY S III was also named “Best Smartphone” in recognition of the device’s powerful performance and overwhelming response from consumers. GALAXY S III, Samsung’s flagship smartphone, achieved worldwide sales of over 40 million units so far, making it the fastest selling device in Samsung history and the world’s leading smartphone.  The GALAXY S III combined natural interaction with easy and instant sharing to deliver a world beating smartphone experience with uncompromised performance. Samsung Tomorrow brings a video clip of the Samsung HomeSync presentation held at MWC 2013 in Spain. Meet the HomeSync, a home hub solution that a shared storage fit for a family at the presentation scenes at MWC 2013. 

Samsung Electronics has been selected to provide and deploy Telefonica’s LTE Radio Access Network (RAN) in Chile. The deployment marks Samsung’s first LTE project with a European global operator and further demonstrates global operators’ growing interest in Samsung’s LTE solutions.

As part of the agreement, Samsung will deploy LTE base stations with all associated systems and will provide network support services. Samsungs equipment will be deployed to cover over 95% of the country and 16 out of 20 of the most populated cities in Chile, including Gran La Concepción and Gran Le Serena.

The rollout will take place from 2013-2014 and will see Samsung deploy the latest mobile broadband technology in areas of the country which typically has a deficit of high-speed internet access. Activities to test the service have already started and the first LTE data call was successfully completed on 14^th of February.

Based on its wide range of field experience in LTE, Samsung has successfully partnered with many global mobile service providers – including Sprint and MetroPCS in the US, KDDI in Japan, SK Telecom, KT in South Korea, Mobily in Saudi Arabia and Three in the UK. Samsung Electronics announced Samsung KNOX, an end-to-end secure solution that provides security hardening from the hardware through to the application layer.

KNOX incorporates Security Enhanced (SE) Android developed by NSA (National Security Agency) and integrity management services implemented in both hardware and the Android framework. At the application layer, KNOX offers a container solution that separates business and personal use of a mobile device. This separation is enforced by SE Android and file system level encryption, offering protection of business data and applications from data leakage, viruses and malware attacks.  Lightweight and compatible with existing common enterprise infrastructure such as MDM, VPN and directory services, KNOX provides reassurance and convenience for IT departments looking to implement and manage Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategies.

Easily accessible via an icon on the home screen, the KNOX container presents to users a variety of enterprise applications in a secure environment including email, browser, contacts, calendars, file sharing, collaboration, CRM and business intelligence applications. KNOX enables existing Android eco-system applications to automatically gain enterprise integration and validated, robust security with zero change to the application source code. KNOX relieves application developers from the burden of developing individual enterprise features such as FIPS compliant VPN, on-device encryption, Enterprise Single Sign On (SSO), Active Directory support and Smart Card based multi-factor authentication.

KNOX is a Samsung enterprise solution and aligned with the Samsung For Enterprise (SAFE) programme, an ongoing effort initiated by the company to promote the readiness of its devices for enterprise use. A new age of S Pen intelligence

Samsung Electronics announced Samsung HomeSync, a home hub solution that a shared storage fit for a family, the best entertainment experience on a big screen TV, and a new way of enjoying your HDTV through a familiar and smarter Android user experience.

Shared Storage for a Family

HomeSync’s 1TB drive can help you sync to multiple devices, providing shared or private storage for all your content. It supports eight separate accounts to cover a whole family, and allows each user to upload and download content from multiple devices and instantly share with other family members. File encryption and user-specific ID and password ensure content in a user’s private area remains separate from the shared area in HomeSync.

Entertainment on a Big Screen

The HomeSync brings the best of Android games, movies, TV shows and streaming content direct into your living room. It allows you to stream content from your Galaxy device wirelessly to the TV – letting you watch, see and use all your home videos, photos and apps, and all at a full HD 1080p.

Giving any HDTV new Smarts

Users can enjoy the full and familiar Android experience with HomeSync’s Jelly Bean media player and access to Play Store and all of your apps. HomeSync also enables new ways to interact with your content via the control modes enabled wirelessly on the phone.

HomeSync will be available from April 2013 in select countries and continue to expand globally.

At the annual Mobile World Congress, Samsung will introduce Video Discovery, a service that provides consumers with a faster and easier way to find and enjoy live TV and video content. Complete with personalized recommendations and the ability to search across multiple content providers, the service can be used from upcoming Samsung mobile devices, Smart TVs, or both.

Video Discovery vastly simplifies the content search process by integrating and relaying real-time program information from multiple content sources including traditional live TV, video-on-demand or online content services such as YouTube. Over time, it also offers personal recommendations based on the user’s viewing and preference history.

The service can be used to find and view content on Samsung SMART TVs and supported mobile devices; or to seamlessly transfer or mirror content between connected devices. Video Discovery also transforms a connected tablet into a universal remote control, allowing users to conduct live TV and on-demand program searches directly from the mobile device and view selections on their Samsung SMART TV.

Video Discovery will initially aggregate content from Netflix and Blockbuster in the US and Acetrax, Wuaki, MovieMax, FilmIn, Chili, Pathé and SF Anytime in the European Countries.

Video Discovery includes 5 different specific features, which are universal remote control, personalized recommendations, one stop search, cross-device experience, and social sharing.

Universal Remote Control

Universal Remote Control connects to all major media devices including cable, satellite, home stereos, DVD and Blu-Ray players, so users no longer need multiple remote controls to manage their content choices.

Personalized Recommendations

Personalized Recommendations enables discovery of the most relevant content through personal recommendations.

One stop Search

One stop Search enables users to find films, TV shows and on-demand video from popular sources in a single search.

Cross-Device Experience

Cross-Device Experience allows users to project content from a smartphone, tablet to a TV, or vice-versa.

Social Sharing

Social Sharing users can share what they’re watching with friends and see what they have watched through Samsung TV Discovery.

The Video Discovery service will launch in the first quarter of 2013 in Korea, the US and 14 European countries including UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain on all series of Samsung 2013 SMART TV and will launch in the second quarter of 2013 in the US, Korea and 14 European countries including UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain on mobile devices.
