Samsung’s exclusive memory exhibit at MWC gave partners and visitors an in-depth view of the advancements in mobile, device and PC memory solutions. Samsung focused their displays on LP DDR, SSD, eMMC, eMCP, ePOP, memory cards and leading-edge embedded storage for smartphones and tablets.

Each memory station held attention by showing the products underneath a magnifying glass to offer a closer look into the compact size while emphasizing the high power output and performance on the displays around them.

LPDDR3 and LPDDR4 Memory Display

The LPDDR3 and the LPDDR4, LP standing for low power, were among the memory solutions highlighted within Samsung’s exhibit. The LPDDR3 and 4, which are the backbones of current mobile applications, offer faster application launch time, a boost in power efficiency, and are a combination of performance and power that can even support UHD displays. Both DRAM chips have 20nm class processors and are packaged POP and discrete. The LPDDR3 has a 23% faster application launch time than the LPDDR2, and a 73% faster email launch time. It is also 40% more power efficient than the LPDDR2. The LPDDR4, which boasts a lightning fast 3200Mbps speed is 40% more power efficient than the LPDDR3.

One of the most excited displays, however, came from Samsung’s SSD memory station. The T1, is the world’s first portable SSD drive, offering a sleek design and immaculate memory storage capacity of 1 Tb, as well as speed and functionality. Every valuable file can now be stored in a beautifully designed, portable SSD drive than can fit easily and discretely into a pocket.

Universal Flash Storage Memory Display

Samsung’s Universal Flash Storage offered attendees a closer look at how the advantages of eMMC and SSD can be brought together to create the next generation of solutions within the memory ecosystem. Samsung’s UFS is fast to boot, fast to respond, fast to copy (3x faster), and will allow users 3x the multitasking capabilities.

eMCP Memory Display

eMCP memory helps to optimize the PCB space, offering a variety of ways to slim down mobile devices. eMCP is cost effective, boosts in-house capability, offers 40% more space efficiency and has a less seasonal effect.

Samsung’s Memory Solutions exhibition at MWC is a true example of how a technology company is pushing the boundaries in memory innovation and keeping the consumers’ best interest in mind, while also considering design and efficiency to produce the best products available.

Hola, and welcome to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. MWC is a congregation of nearly 800 operators, with more than 250 companies in the broader mobile industry. Every year, Barcelona offers a forum for the world’s leaders in mobile technology to showcase their newest products in the mobile ecosystem, including handsets, devices, software, internet and equipment.

In 2006, the location of the MWC was moved from Cannes to the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Europe’s second largest exhibition centers, due to the growing number of participants and attendees. The GSMA, the organization behind MWC, expects that attendance for Mobile World Congress 2015 will exceed the record of nearly 86,000 attendees set at the 2014 event. Mobile World Congress will be held 2-5 March 2015 at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, with events also taking place at Fira Montjuïc.

One event in particular has been generating an enormous amount of excitement and buzz, and will take place ahead of official start of MWC on March 1st, 2015. Samsung’s Unpacked event will reveal to the world the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the new flagship models to which the smartphone technology leader has dedicated an unprecedented amount of research and development, in hopes of creating the best smartphone available on the market.

The full Unpacked event will soon be available to be viewed.

The Unpacked Event

Samsung’s Unpacked event set sail on a beautiful sunny day in Barcelona, near the Mediterranean Sea. The atmosphere was filled with languages from around the globe, as people from all over the world gathered to witness Samsung’s revealing of the groundbreaking Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. As the event was nearing the time of launch, news and media were invited into the auditorium, and a once empty venue filled with thousands of chairs, was instantaneously occupied as a wave people wearing orange wrist bands flooded in to get the best seat.

When the time finally arrived at 6:30 PM, the auditorium was transformed into an immersive presentation, surrounded by near 360 degrees of screens, displaying futuristic effects accompanied by music with similar themes. Then, a voice began addressing the crowd with the first official images if the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge being brilliantly displayed on the screens.

“What’s next? It’s the question that begins all our exploring. It ignites our imagination. Inspires us to bring in tomorrow, today. Tomorrow, metals will flow. Beauty will be powerful. Walls will disappear, reflections will be free. Colors will live. The future will be the present. Light the way to next. Welcome to Galaxy Unpacked 2015.”

With the audience’s full attention placed on center stage, Young Hee Lee, Executive Vice President opened the presentation and readied the world for the revealing of the next Galaxy. She then introduced JK Shin, CEO and head of the IM division.

Two words appeared on the screens that encapsulate Samsung’s tireless effort to bring the world the best mobile device possible; Relentless Innovation. “No more internet rumors, today we introduce what’s next.” JK Shin delved deeper into Samsung’s mission in not only developing the most beautiful device, but also the most powerful before fading into mesmerizing and detailed displays of the new Galaxy. JK Shin discussed the key elements of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, focusing on Samsung Pay, Knox Security, the powerful and revolutionary front and rear cameras, and Samsung’s cutting-edge developments in wireless charging.

Then, out from his jacket pocket, came the device everyone was waiting for; the Galaxy S6 edge. Mr. Shin explained that Samsung has an important role to play in advancing technology in our lives. With Samsung’s firsts in smartphone innovation and advancements, the technology leader is setting the bar high, and other companies will soon follow, realizing the need in incorporating similar technology in their products. “The next is now!” Samsung has set up to deliver something better than ever before.

Hyun Yeul Lee, the User Experience leader behind the Galaxy series, went on to describe the new design interface and functionality. Simple and refined, the UX is designed to be beautiful and basic. Text has replaced symbols, color codes group applications together based on their functionality and the edge’s curved screens further enhance user’s interaction with the device, allowing then to know who is contacting them and the urgency needed in response. There will no longer be hard to use and hard to find features and most importantly, “No more scrolling!” Hyun Yeul Lee says with amplitude.

Following Hyun Yeul Lee, Justin Denison, from Samsung America, reiterates how Samsung has set the bar for the rest of the industry in memory, battery life, wireless charging, and smartphone camera technology. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will feature eMMC memory cards that will integrate seamlessly with SSD’s, creating a whole new world of Universal Flash Storage.

Justin Denison shortly touches on the new Gear VR 2, and how it and the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will bring about an out of this world immersive experience. The super AMOLED screen on the next Galaxy displays practically crystal-clear images for Gear VR 2 users, creating the best virtual adventures possible.

When describing the Galaxy battery capabilities, Mr. Denison explains that it only takes 10 minutes of charge time to product enough battery power that will last 4 hours of normal usage.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will come with Samsung Pay, a highly secure and universally accepted mobile payment system that will work with most credit cards, debit cards and NFC. The MST even allows the users to use mobile payments even when mag strips can only be used. For ease of mind, users’ data remains only with their banks, not within the device or with Samsung Pay.

The last presenter, Gregory Wade, described in depth the emphasis Samsung has put into its mobile security with Samsung Knox. “Ready for business, right out of the box!”

After the Unpacked presentation, the audience was invited to have a hands-on interaction with the devices of the future. The moment everyone was waiting for, actually having the opportunity hold and use the devices, had arrived. Crowds quickly surrounded the exhibition stalls where several models of the phone could be held.

One attendee explained that he was very impressed with the S6, particularly the sleek design of the metal frame and that the S6 is the best model he has seen from Samsung, or any other mobile company.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 lived up to the hype and far exceeded expectations, especially when attendees could actually feel the lightweight and impressive metal design in their hands.

The next Galaxy will be available in select markets beginning on April 10th, 2015.

Samsung’s Presence at MWC

It is clearly evident that Samsung has a strong presence at this year’s MWC. After yesterday’s Unpacked event and unveiling of Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge flagship models, crowds were in constant flow with attendees wanting a hands-on interaction with the most powerful and innovative smartphone soon to be in the consumer market.

Samsung’s impressive mobile exhibition showcases the key elements of Samsung’s arsenal of products, applications, security, and memory solutions. The obvious excitement was surrounding the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, drawing scores of people and media to the Samsung Mobile stage.

Those with the necessary credentials were allowed access into Samsung’s elegant exhibit, housing the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, as well as demonstrations of the S Health app, Samsung KNOX security system, and the highly anticipated Samsung Pay, which is set to revolutionize mobile payment.

In addition to mobile offerings, Samsung has an exhibit dedicated to Networks Solutions and Device Solutions.

Samsung Tomorrow will be covering the entire event with exclusive, onsite interviews, video demonstrations and exciting information and coverage. Follow Samsung Tomorrow for up to date news and announcements from Samsung during the Mobile World Congress 2015.

Samsung has redefined mobile communication, defying the limits and constraints of design and technology.

With the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung has answered the growing demand of consumers for a beautiful smartphone with powerful features.

Samsung is using new manufacturing processes to offer immaculate construction and top-of-the-line usability and functionality to produce proprietary technology. These techniques span all the way from authentic material handling to the last finishing touches. Samsung was the first company to introduce curved display phones, and now Samsung is elevating the possibilities even higher by combining beauty and purpose from the ground up.

The curved design of GS6 edge was realized by 3D Thermoforming, a unique technology created and perfected by Samsung. This involves the insertion of glass between two molds, heating it to a pliable forming temperature of 800 degrees Celsius, and then allowing it to then be pressed into a symmetrical shape. In this process, the glass is shaped in three directions at once, giving it its curved shape.

Until now, smartphones were equipped with 2.5D glass, which was carved to the desired shape. Though the display was flexible, the glass could not be bent. Therefore, previous screens could only be curved up to a certain degree.

After 3D Thermoforming, the glass is perfectly processed with the highest precision machinery to avoid the slightest errors. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge’s glass production procedure incorporates sophisticated steps to produce an elegant finish. This multi-step process includes polishing the front, side, rear surface polishing glass.

The luxurious feel of the high-gloss color on the rear casing is amplified by the nano-thin multi-coating process. The process of adding nano layers of multiple coatings gives the casing on both the front and back a rich, dynamic color that reflects light as it is viewed from different angles. Furthermore, the sleek and slim body shows off Samsung’s effort to provide the best technology, beautifully.

In addition to the unique glass design element of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, just as much attention was given to the metal material.

Existing smartphones normally use 6063 aluminum. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are equipped with high-strength 6013 aluminum which is typically used in products that require extreme durability such as aircraft fuselages, automobiles, yachts, and mountain bikes. 6013 aluminum is 1.5 times stronger and 1.2 times more scratch-resistant than 6063 aluminum.

Like true craftsman, Samsung has produced the sleek frame of this masterpiece using a process of more than 20 precise and delicate steps. Procedures that help provide texture and enhanced durability include precision machining from extrusion, molding to integrate heterogeneous components, diamond cutting on the metal covers and anodizing.

Samsung combines functionality with beauty and durability in its new metal frame, introducing new technology for seamless communication, which is the principle function of all smartphones.

After realizing the thickness of the metal frame ultimately impacts antenna performance, Samsung applied a technique to weld the antenna to the metal frame itself with ultrasonic welding for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. This, makes the antenna more stable for the environment and resilient against external impact, while freeing up more internal space.

In introducing innovation, not only in design and engineering, but also in manufacturing processes, Samsung adheres to its notoriously strict quality control policy. Each product undergoes intense durability testing such as drop tests, bending test and performance testing among many other steps. Samsung takes to ensure the highest quality products. By fusing together innovation with durability, Samsung is able to provide the level of quality consumers expect from Samsung.

Consumer habits around smartphone camera usage have been drastically increasing – and there are no signs of slowing down. Users are constantly requiring features that can be more easily tailored to their photographic needs. Samsung has been at the forefront of smartphone camera innovation and technology, and this year’s flagship model was no exception.

With this in mind, Samsung has greatly improved both the quality and usability in the front and rear cameras of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge to achieve pictures that more closely simulate how the human eye sees the visible world; a first in smartphone camera technology. Some of the more notable camera improvements in the new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge can be found in the front camera. Now boasting a 5MP camera that supports wide-angle images and an enhanced beauty mode – capturing the perfect Wide Selfie shot has never been this easy, or rendered so beautifully.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge’s front camera also contains a CMOS camera image sensor that is 1.4 times larger than its predecessor. With a larger image sensor, a clearer picture can be captured and easily adapted to any media, keeping the quality of shared images high. With the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, taking pictures with the front camera will rival the quality of the main camera in most other smartphone models.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a powerful photographic tool that allows the photographer to capture the richest and most vibrant colors from both their environments and subjects. HDR combines a series of high-exposure and low-exposure images to find the perfect balance, creating an effect similar to the human eye. Typically, multiple images consisting of high, low and mid exposures are required to create an HDR image.

Incorporating HDR into smartphone cameras is not new, however, the HDR image took a while to be created as several separate images had to be edited together. In addition, HDR could not be incorporated into video recordings during early adaptations, due to the complexity of real-time lighting comprehension. This is no longer the case.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will feature a powerful, real-time HDR function in both the front and rear camera, an unprecedented achievement in smartphone camera technology. This allows the user to capture more vivid and brilliant images, regardless of the environment they are shooting in, in real-time.

Although the Galaxy S5 also had live-HDR, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have this feature in both the front and rear cameras. It will also be automatic; removing the need for the user to remember put their camera in this setting. As a result, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are able to instantly analyze the surrounding environment and its lighting to optimize image capture.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are pushing the boundaries of progression in smartphone camera technology. Both models will also contain HDR video, which shows true value for the user as the camera effectively controls and manages changing contrast and brightness while capturing video.

In addition, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are equipped with F1.9 lenses, smart Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and IR White Balance for enhanced quality, even in the dark. The rear camera’s smart OIS shake prevention function will permit users to capture bright and clear images without blurring, regardless of unsteady hands and camera shake.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will allow users to capture their “perfect moments,” whatever they are doing, with a brand new Quick Launch feature. Users can instantly launch the camera application in just 0.7 seconds*, even when other applications are running. From a locked screen, application page or web browser, the user only needs to double-click the center button of the smartphone and the camera will immediately launch and be ready to capture images within a second.

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, users will have a wide variety of different image styles and capture modes at their fingertips. All of the necessary camera settings, such as a timer, effects or light, are provided in the preview screen before shooting, eliminating the need to scroll through pages of effects. There is even a normal camera mode and a professional camera mode, allowing users to have full control over the outcome of their images.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge also have an advanced Auto-Focus function, which correctly focuses on any desired subject, moving or stationary. With the Galaxy S5, Samsung was able to adapt sensors with phase auto-focus that supports a 0.3 second auto-focus, an industry best at the time. Users can also manually blur the background, highlight the subject, or change focal areas in a background with the out-focus function, much like they can in a DSLR.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have advanced this even further by being able to detect moving subjects with the auto-focus with the Fast Tracking Auto-Focus function. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are the first smartphones in the world to offer this feature to users. Now, when your child, friend or pet is doing something fun and spontaneous, users will be able to capture everything in perfect clarity.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge’s cameras are both intelligent and meaningful, truly catering to the needs and desires of their users. Samsung continues to lead the industry in smartphone camera innovation by continuously asking the question, “How can we make our smartphone cameras the best for the users?”

*Average speed based on internal testing conducted by Samsung. Results may vary by device or situation.

Samsung announced the latest in mobile payment services, Samsung Pay, ushering in a new era of mobile payments and ecommerce. Samsung Pay allows consumers to transition to secure mobile payments at nearly all merchant locations. To date, mobile wallets have had extremely low acceptance with merchants utilizing conventional magstripe terminals. With Samsung Pay, consumers can now utilize their mobile devices to pay at existing point-of-sale terminals. To achieve this, Samsung leverages both Near Field Communication (NFC) and a new proprietary technology called Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) to make mobile payments more accessible to merchants and consumers than ever before.

To deliver a best-in-class mobile payment solution, Samsung has partnered with major payment networks such as MasterCard and Visa. Additionally, Samsung is working hard to expand the partnership ecosystem for Samsung Pay with key financial partners globally, including American Express, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase, and U.S. Bank, to provide greater flexibility, access, and choice for customers while enabling a simple and secure payment experience.
“Samsung Pay will reinvent how people pay for goods and services and transform how they use their smartphones,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “The secure and simple payment process, coupled with our robust partner network, makes Samsung Pay a truly game-changing service that will bring value to consumers and our partners in the ecosystem.”

“Mobile commerce just got a lot more interesting,” said Jim McCarthy, Executive Vice President, Visa Inc. “Combining Visa’s expertise in payment technology with Samsung’s leadership in creating innovative mobile experiences, gives more choice to financial institutions who want to enable their customers to pay by phone.”
“We are committed to making interactions easier in the financial lives of our customers,” said Brian Moynihan, CEO, Chairman and Director of Bank of America. “Samsung Pay is another significant move in that direction for our 17 million mobile customers.”

Expansive Coverage

Samsung Pay has the potential of being accepted at approximately 30 million merchant locations worldwide, making it the only mobile payment solution with near universal acceptance. Samsung offers this capability by deploying a groundbreaking technology called Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). Consumers can use Samsung Pay in merchant locations regardless of whether the terminals support NFC or traditional magstripe, which is the vast majority of existing terminals.

In addition, the MST technology enables Samsung Pay to support private label credit cards (PLCC) with the cooperation of key partners, including Synchrony Financial and First Data Corporation. The engagement with merchants, issuing banks, and major payment networks offers customers the opportunity to use a wide range of payment cards and makes Samsung Pay a truly universal mobile payment solution.

Margaret Keane, President and CEO of Synchrony Financial, the largest provider of private label credit cards in the U.S., noted, “This is great news for our customers who can access their cards and make payments using Samsung Pay and great news for our retailers who won’t have to upgrade their point of sale terminals. We look forward to working with Samsung and others to deliver secure mobile payments for our 60 million active accounts.”

Simple and Fast

With Samsung Pay, consumers will benefit from a simple and easy-to-use application leading to a positive consumer experience. Adding a card requires a few simple steps. Once added, the user simply swipes up from the bezel to invoke the Samsung Pay app, chooses the desired payment card, and authenticates with the fingerprint sensor. Tapping the device to the point-of-sale (POS) terminals allows for a fast, secure, and easy purchase.

Secure and Private

Samsung is deeply committed to upholding security and user data privacy to the highest industry standards. Samsung Pay does not keep personal account numbers on a consumer’s device. In addition, Samsung Pay provides many security features that make it safer than a physical card. When combined with tokenization – replacing sensitive card data with a unique, secure token to prevent fraud – Samsung Pay will deliver secure mobile payments worldwide.

“We are excited to work with Samsung as they deliver Samsung Pay to consumers around the globe,” said Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer, MasterCard. “The security and simplicity we are able to deliver through our digital enablement service is rapidly changing the way consumers can shop. The launch of Samsung Pay will continue to drive momentum for mobile payments and provide a broader set of digital experiences.”

Samsung’s payment security is enhanced by its own mobile security platform (Samsung KNOXTM) and ARM TrustZone® working together to protect transaction information from fraudsters and data attacks. Moreover, in the case of a lost phone, Samsung’s Find My Mobile feature enables users to locate, lock and even wipe their devices remotely; ensuring Samsung Pay data is hardly compromised.

Samsung Pay will initially be available in the United States and Korea this coming summer and expand to other regions, including Europe and China with Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

Samsung Electronics will demonstrate three key network technologies at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona, which will pave the way for 5G mobile communications. Each technology focuses on important aspects of the Radio Access Network (RAN) and involves networking innovations that will have a dramatic impact on the capabilities of commercial mobile networks.

“We consider 5G to be a transformation of how networks are constructed and how radio resources are used,” said Chang Yeong Kim, Head of DMC R&D Center at Samsung Electronics. “To support 100 times greater throughputs at a fraction of the latency, we need to consider more than just a single network component; we need to look at how everything works together. At the same time, the evolution toward 5G must be an incremental process, introducing new technologies in the short- and mid-term that can be tried, tested and proven on commercial networks.”

mmWave Wireless Backhaul

<mmWave Wireless Backhaul Concept>

Utilizing a 60 GHz spectrum, Samsung is rapidly nearing commercialization of a wireless backhaul solution that promises to support speeds of multi-Gbps—faster than legacy wireless backhaul solutions.

Samsung’s unique approach combines active and passive radio steering techniques to increase the effective range of a radio without exceeding the power output limits that exist in unlicensed bands throughout the world.

An active antenna array enables a beamformed radio signal to be directed at a passive lens antenna, which further focuses the radio signal toward a fixed point—similar to a contact lens focusing light into the retina of the eye.

By actively focusing the radio signal into a precise and highly accurate beam, the solution overcomes many of the environmental issues that affect communications in the 60GHz band.

The technology is initially intended to target flexible small-cell deployments, where wireline backhaul may be expensive or impractical to implement.

Additionally, the technology is designed to be easy to deploy and maintain, taking advantage of a small, lightweight and modular design with separate radio, antenna and processing modules in each unit.

Meanwhile, the use of active beamforming reduces the need to regularly calibrate the antenna orientation, further reducing maintenance requirements.

With small cell deployments expected to be a significant focus in 2015, this technology will be a solid enabler for high capacity and better coverage with lower CAPEX and OPEX.

Full Dimension Multiple Input Multiple Output (FD-MIMO)

<FD-MIMO Concept>

With today’s MIMO solutions, antennas are configured to form beams in one direction—horizontally. In this way, multiple users can each receive a “unique” signal from the antenna, effectively allowing a cell’s capacity to increase since users in the cell no longer compete with each other for the same radio resources.

However, with only one-dimensional beamforming capability, users who are at the same horizontal angle from the antenna (even at different vertical angles) still receive the same signal and thus continue to share radio resources.

With the introduction of FD-MIMO and 2D-array antenna technology, wireless signals can be adaptively beamformed to specific users in both horizontal and vertical domains.

Additionally, with the adoption of advanced digital signal processing schemes, an FD-MIMO antenna system can support higher-order multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) which delivers a multi-fold improvement in system performance compared to conventional MIMO systems.

The technology is ultimately designed to deliver a unique, targeted radio signal to more than eight users in a cell at a time.

The innovative capabilities provided by FD-MIMO systems will also enable support for new deployment and operational scenarios, such as high-rise building support and multiple user services in crowded malls and stadiums.

Samsung is leading the standardization of 3GPP FD-MIMO in the upcoming Release 13 and exhibit this item at MWC 2015 includes an LTE Rel.13 pre-release eNodeB. It is characterized by its compact footprint with the 2D-array antenna, RF components, and baseband board being fully integrated.

Samsung has made several critical steps toward demonstrating the viability and suitability of millimeter waves for the next generation of radio access technologies. The technology is expected to play an important role in delivering cost-effective gigabit data rates to users throughout an operator’s mobile network.

In October 2014, Samsung announced the “world’s first successful test” of mobile millimeter wave radio technology, establishing a throughput of 1.2 Gbps at 100 km/h, and establishing a new record for stationary communications of 7.5 Gbps.

The test utilized a licensed 28 GHz band and introduced Samsung’s Hybrid Adaptive Array antenna technology. Samsung believes that research into technologies such as this represents one of several critical milestones toward meeting the goals of 5G technology, including peak throughputs that are 100 times faster than those of LTE, and latencies one tenth of those we experience today.

Samsung Electronics announces the launch of its CognitiV Analytics solution to provide operators with a powerful, data-driven approach to network quality improvement. The solution combines real-time data collection with efficient congestion relief algorithms to provide in-depth insight into, and resolution of, network traffic challenges, and represents the first new component of its CognitiV OSS portfolio.

“Existing industry analytics solutions typically focus on analyzing data generated by either the network or the user data service alone,” said Jungah Choi, Senior Vice President of Advanced Technology at Networks Business, Samsung Electronics. “These two separate approaches can abstract network issues and do not provide true insight into the end user’s service Quality of Experience (QoE). By analyzing the data on a per-user and per-service basis in real-time, CognitiV Analytics pinpoints the root cause of service quality issues as, or even before, they occur, and jointly optimize the RAN and core policy to enhance the user experience.”

The distinction between each service on a per-user basis is important for ensuring that the problem is well understood, and that response algorithms can properly react and improve overall network quality. To facilitate this, CognitiV Analytics is capable of gathering useful sets of traffic data from network elements, such as the base station or from various network probes. It then processes this information in real time and presents an informative and visual display of any potential issues to the operator’s network operations staff.

One of the primary targets of CognitiV Analytics is video traffic, owing in large part to the vast impact it has on the network. By collecting and analyzing video traffic, the solution can determine if each user’s activity meets minimum Quality of Experience requirements. The network is then able to adapt in a proactive manner by dynamically modifying the network policy.

In addition to video services, CognitiV Analytics is designed to capture usage and QoE data on various other services, including web traffic. Effective real-time monitoring of a broad spectrum of services empowers network operators to ensure that available spectrum resources can be efficiently balanced, thus maximizing network performance and ensuring customers receive the optimal mobile user experience.

CognitiV OSS

Showcased for the first time at MWC 2015, Samsung is previewing a large-scale entry into mobile service provider Operational Support Systems (OSS), with its CognitiV OSS portfolio of solutions and products. With an initial focus on networks and service analytics, Samsung is combining this new offering with the considerable Professional Services experience it has developed building and maintaining LTE networks throughout the most technologically advanced markets in the world. Together, CognitiV OSS and Samsung’s Professional Services are intended to serve operators with a superior tool for solid network performance and user experience differentiation.

Joining analytics within the CognitiV OSS umbrella is Samsung’s award-winning self-optimizing network solution, Smart SON, along with the recently announced CognitiV Cloud Manager for management of virtualized network infrastructure. Samsung has plans to further expand its portfolio into Network Management Systems (NMS) and SDN offerings in the future.

Samsung’s themes at this year’s Mobile World Congress focus on end-to-end performance and usability improvements for network operators and end-users alike, as well as the exploration of new opportunities for mobile networks such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and 5G technologies.

LTE-Advanced Performance Improvements

With operators across the globe having already deployed their initial LTE networks, many are already looking at LTE-Advanced in order to extend network performance, reliability and capacity. Samsung took an early lead in 2013 with the world’s first commercial deployment of the LTE Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology, in which it extended the world’s first commercial deployment of three-band CA, along with the user devices to support each launch.

At MWC this year, Samsung will demonstrate the experience it has gained with the showcase of several important improvements to Carrier Aggregation technology, including FDD-TDD CA, Uplink CA, 4×4 MIMO with CA and CA using unlicensed spectrum (commonly known as LTE-Unlicensed, or License Assisted Access), as well as LTE-WiFi throughput aggregation. In addition to its evolved CA demonstration, Samsung will also showcase enhanced VoLTE Solution for coverage extension with the experience of its World’s 1st VoLTE launching.

These technologies will help Samsung push LTE-A networks well beyond what most networks are capable of today, giving operators a competitive edge and enabling new possibilities in mobile service delivery.

CognitiV OSS and Service QoE Analytics

Samsung will showcase for the first time a first look into its developing Operational Support Systems portfolio, CognitiV OSS. Combined with extensive experience in Professional Services delivered for world’s 1st commercial launching and world’s most dense area, Samsung aims to help operators manage and maintain networks in a more proactive and intelligent manner. The goal of CognitiV OSS is to provide comprehensive network operations management capabilities to mobile service providers who seek to deliver maximum quality of experience for users in a cost efficient and effective way.

At this year’s MWC, Samsung will demonstrate the first new component of its OSS portfolio, CognitiV Analytics, designed to give operators direct insight into video traffic on both a per-service and per-user basis. By collecting data from various elements and interfaces throughout the mobile network, as well as service usage metrics, its service QoE component enables operations and maintenance teams to easily identify and track user’s experience degradation in the network and rapidly respond to ensure that users throughout the network receive a consistently high Quality of Experience.

For more details on Samsung’s recently announced CognitiV Analytics platform, please see visit: Samsung Targets High Quality Data Services with CognitiV Analytics at MWC 2015

C-RAN2.0

Based on its commercial experience with centralizing LTE RAN infrastructure, Samsung has introduced an enhanced Centralized RAN (C-RAN) platform, called C-RAN 2.0. In concert with Samsung’s Smart LTE technologies, C-RAN2.0 seeks to introduce efficient baseband pooling and baseband resource scalability in order to provide more powerful network performance while simultaneously enabling potentially significant reductions in operating costs. A more stable network with improvements in performance from cell to cell will improve customer satisfaction, servicing as a strong network differentiator to attract new subscribers and reduce subscriber churn.

HetNet Technology Enhancements

Densification is a core component of LTE evolution strategy and the implementation of additional network layers presents both vast capacity potential and new radio interference challenges. As a leader of this area, Samsung is committed to HetNet densification by introducing significant improvements to its indoor and outdoor small cell lineups, a Wi-Fi integrated small cell designed for low-profile, dense urban deployments, a new wideband amplifier to enable up to 8 simultaneous bands in RF repeater and updated small cell platform which leverages the latest in Lithium-ion Battery (LIB) technologies. In addition to Samsung’ product lineup, Smart SON solution will bring improvements to multi-layer HetNets by suggesting new cell sites and quantity of smallcell in heavy load area

IoT through NFV

Hot on the heels of its selection as sole vendor for SK Telecom’s IoT-dedicated virtualized core, Samsung is providing a first look at its AdaptiV Core solution. The showcase will include a look at the CognitiV Cloud Manager, responsible for management and orchestration of NFV elements throughout the network, and Samsung’s AdaptiV EPC, which allows operators to scale core network functions in and out to balance demand and resource usage throughout periods of high and low network traffic.

In addition, Samsung will introduce an upgraded solution which enables location tracking of devices on in-building networks. Location, along with connectivity and communication standards, forms a critical backbone for IoT applications, and has thus far been a considerable challenge in many in-building mobile environments.

The Road to 5G

Samsung will showcase three new technologies that promise to significantly improve network capacity and responsiveness. A new 60GHz Wireless Backhaul solution represents an effective solution to rapidly deploy new cell sites. The technology utilizes dual active (beamforming) and passive antennas in order to transmit up to multi-Gbps in the unlicensed band.

Full Dimension-MIMO (or FD-MIMO), greatly extends the capabilities of MIMO technology by allowing an active antenna area to deliver dedicated wireless signals to multiple users within a single cell, greatly improving cell capacity while reducing inter-cell interference.

Finally, Samsung will demonstrate its 28GHz mobile radio access technology jointly with several operators. The technology received significant attention and pushed barriers in both stationary and mobile transmission speeds in October 2014, including successfully achieving data rates of 7.5Gbps and 1.2Gbps respectively.

These technologies are expected to form a critical foundation for the types of services and applications that 5G is envisioned to support, including advanced cloud computing, virtual presence, augmented reality and no-delay mobile delivery of ultra high-definition video formats such as 4K, 8K and beyond.
