The Samsung Networks Booth at MWC 2017 showcases a range of exciting potential applications for 5G technology – the next phase of mobile connectivity – as well as the lengths Samsung is taking to make those possibilities reality. Featuring interactive exhibits exploring the company’s latest mobile technologies, solutions and developments, including its announcement of the world’s first end-to-end 5G product portfolio, Samsung’s Networks Booth demonstrates the company’s commitment to enriching users’ lives through relentless technology innovation.

Samsung’s new end-to-end 5G product lineup includes 5G chipsets (RFIC and Modem), a 5G Radio base station – Access Unit(top left), a 5G Home Router – Customer Premise Equipment(top right), and a Next-Generation Core. As illustrated here, when placed in a window, facing a 5G Radio base station, the 5G Home Router will offer users gigabit home broadband service.

When 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) networks expand to diverse use cases, they’ll offer a highly advanced and flexible means to provide network connections for many different devices, including IoT technology and even connected cars.

With 5G, video analysis technology, which could feasibly be used to identify individuals on video feeds, will benefit from high-speed data transmission, edge computing, accommodate citywide HD video feeds and real-time video processing, and also become easier to apply in a range of business areas.

The rise of HD video, virtual reality and augmented reality content has led to drastic increases in data use. Indian network operator Jio, which handles some of the world’s heaviest 4G LTE data traffic, utilizes Samsung’s Data Monitoring & Analysis (DMA) and Voice Monitoring & Analysis (VoMA) tools to identify root causes of congestion and maximizes user experience.

Samsung created this 3D RF planning solution, which uses 3D maps to accurately analyze building distribution – a critical factor when planning networks – collects service quality information, and automatically suggests the best options to enhance users’ experience, such as locations to install additional base stations.

Samsung also announced a full lineup of small cell products for homes and enterprises that support shared spectrums (CBRS and LAA) and wireless access points – to tackle network overload and service quality degradation, especially in indoor environments.

Samsung will be exhibiting these technologies and solutions at its MWC 2017 Networks Booth (Exhibit Hall 2 Stand 2M10) from February 27 March 2 in Barcelona.

Samsung announced today its innovative “I&G (Infill & Growth) Project” for Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd in India. This joint project was established to upgrade current LTE mobile communication services across India by expanding both the current network capacity as well as network coverage.

The project sets a high benchmark for LTE services in India through wider coverage, in-building penetration and the highest speeds, regardless of the user’s location. Utilizing spectrum in the 850, 1800 and 2300MHz bands, it will enable seamless indoor and outdoor coverage in dense urban areas. The project will also extend Jio’s superiority in rural areas by expanding its reach to over 90% of the population.

Previously, Samsung provided the LTE core, base stations and solutions required for VoLTE services, as well as massive deployment services for establishing a nationwide network for Jio. The two companies have successfully established the world’s largest greenfield LTE network.

“I am excited to announce our new project with Samsung,” said Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm. “We successfully achieved 100 million subscribers in 170 days, making us the fastest-growing company in the world, and the numbers continue to rapidly grow. It was possible because we introduced a truly effective LTE service, Pan-India. We are committed to bringing game-changing digital experiences to India with superior ecosystems, mobile content, all-IP networks and ongoing process innovations.”

“As Jio’s end-to-end LTE solutions partner, it is a great pleasure for Samsung to contribute to Jio’s tremendous success,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “The massive deployment of over a million cells across India is especially remarkable. We will strive to create new paradigms for LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G by closely cooperating with Jio as a unified workforce.”

Jio stands as an innovator which transformed the telecommunications sector in India last year. The company has already established itself as the leading data service provider in the country within a few months of commencing operations. It was also India’s first operator to introduce free-of-charge High Definition calls (VoLTE). This is especially notable, as this approach is now becoming a new market rule in India.

Samsung, as Jio’s strategic partner, has established a foundation for Indians to enjoy exclusive services, including voice calls, with data as their engine. It has also gone a step further, enabling Jio to offer a superior service to its users by providing professional solutions such as Samsung VoLTE, Quality Monitoring and Analysis (VoMA) and Cognitive Traffic Monitoring and Optimizer for a superior user experience. Further, it was through Samsung’s VoMA that the steady management of high traffic in data-dense environments was enabled. The tools monitor and optimize mobile data services, and have successfully contributed to enabling Jio to provide its subscribers with a stable and improved user experience.

The relationship between Jio and Samsung goes back to 2012, when the two companies signed a turn-key agreement covering the entire scope of network, ranging from equipment to establishment and maintenance services.

Further insights will be announced at Jio and Samsung’s joint press conference on February 28 at MWC 2017.

About Jio

Samsung Electronics today announced its plan to expand its Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging service using the recently-acquired NewNet Communication Technologies RCS solution. Samsung’s RCS service is a complete end-to-end solution that includes RCS-enabled devices, native/downloadable device clients, cloud-based RCS application servers, an interconnectivity hub among operators and a third-party monetization platform.

Users will enjoy rich messaging features such as group chats, video calls and large file transfers, while continuing to use their phone numbers without the need for an additional app.

Samsung’s RCS cloud will allow mobile network operators to quickly launch the service and avoid the costly and time-consuming efforts of building their own network infrastructure. Additionally, Samsung’s RCS hub will support and simplify the interconnectivity among other RCS-enabled operators, Samsung and third-party RCS clouds, allowing for the same service ubiquity for users as SMS and MMS.

Samsung’s RCS solution is compliant with the latest GSMA RCS specifications. As a standards-based solution, it will be a true messaging evolution post SMS/MMS, making it possible to achieve a global footprint very quickly.

“We are very excited to be expanding Samsung’s RCS messaging service,” said Yunsang Park, SVP of the Product Service Innovation Strategy Group, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “With this new offering, mobile customers will have a rich messaging experience built directly into their phones. Our new RCS solution, along with our supporting mobile network operator partners, will make it easier for hundreds of millions of users across the globe to access RCS messaging. We are grateful for our partners’ support and look forward to expanding our network in the future.”

Samsung is cooperating with several network provider partners to advance the availability of RCS messaging, including Deutsche Telekom, KT, SK Telecom, T-Mobile and Vodafone. To suit each partner’s specific needs, the solution is offered not only as a full packaged partnership but also in a variety of modular options. More partners are expected to join in the near future.

“The GSMA aligned the mobile industry behind a single, Universal Profile for advanced RCS messaging and we have already seen a number of significant operator launches,” said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. “This approach gives consumers a richer and more consistent messaging experience regardless of device or network. We look forward to seeing the profile become the de facto industry standard in the near future.”

The RCS solution will be supported by Samsung smartphones running Android Marshmallow or later.

The RCS demo will also be showcased at the Samsung booth (Hall 3) at Mobile World Congress from February 27 to March 2, 2017.

A day after revealing new products and partnerships designed to transform consumers’ lifestyles through streamlined mobility, Samsung turned its attention to businesses, outlining ways for enterprises to utilize mobile solutions to transform the way they work.

The Samsung Mobile Enterprise Summit, held in the same venue as its MWC 2017 press conference, welcomed approximately 500 partners for an evening of enlightening presentations exploring Samsung’s efforts to drive the future of the mobile enterprise. Over the course of the hour-long event, Samsung outlined ways for businesses in various fields to adopt platforms based on mobility – to allow business growth through digital transformation.

The event was opened by Samsung’s Vice President of Marketing in Europe, Rory O’Neill, who invited attendees to attend March 29’s Galaxy Unpacked event and also introduced the evening’s theme: rethinking the way enterprises work. Mr. O’Neill then introduced DJ Koh, Samsung’s President of Mobile Communications Business, who discussed Samsung’s commitment to designing enterprise innovations and pointed to the award-winning Knox security platform and the new, high-performance Galaxy Book 2-in-1 tablet as examples.

“Our commitment is to work in partnership with you – to support the growth of your company, so that our businesses can succeed and grow together,” said Mr. Koh.

Next, Mr. Koh introduced Suk-Jea Hahn, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Global B2B Team, who discussed Samsung’s efforts to develop enterprise solutions for the mobile era. “In this era of mobile transformation, it will take courage and leadership to seize the opportunities that lie ahead,” explained Mr. Hahn. “It will also take a partner who is committed to meaningful innovation, across hardware, software and services. A partner who is pioneering advances that will open the door to entirely new experiences. A partner like Samsung.”

Mr. Hahn yielded the stage to Ron Kozoman, Head of Mobile Business Unit Management at Thomson Reuters, and Aude Brille, Peugeot’s Vice President of Brand Strategy, who elaborated on how Samsung’s solutions have helped streamline their companies’ mobile transformations. After Mr. Kozoman discussed how Samsung’s innovations are helping Thomson Reuters’ journalists develop immersive, VR-based reports, Mr. Hahn introduced Samsung’s new Gear 360 Pro camera, as well as Knox Configure, a cloud-based tool that allows businesses to flexibly manage large numbers of devices.

.

Afterward, Justin Denison, Senior Vice President of Product Strategy and Marketing at Samsung Electronics America, spoke on Samsung’s commitment to designing devices that increase users’ connectivity and productivity, and allow businesses to work securely.

Samsung Electronics and Deutsche Telekom have successfully showcased 5G Guaranteed Latency (GLA) as an end-to-end network slice at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017. GLA is one of the key differentiators that clearly distinguishes 5G technology from the previous 4G. It is viewed as highly critical for the 5G era, as it enables latency control, low and stable, for example, according to the requirements of specific use cases.

During the live demonstration at Deutsche Telekom’s booth, two robotic arms were connected to Samsung’s 5G radio system which incorporates GLA technology. When GLA was applied to both of the robotic arms for the guarantee of low and controlled latency, a box was successfully delivered from point A to B, as they moved in a synchronous harmony within the set amount of time. On the contrary, when GLA was applied to only one of the arms, the different latencies caused the arms to differ in speed, causing the box to drop. GLA will gain importance especially in industrial use cases where accurate synchronization between machines are critical.

“5G signifies more than ultra-fast speed. With low latency, close to what is expected of ‘real-time’, unprecedented business models and services can be generated,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of the Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “The 5G GLA showcase, jointly conducted with Deutsche Telekom, has proven that an accurate and stable operation of latency control is a feasible concept. We believe that this is a key element in enabling operators to create new business models, including industrial use cases.”

“In the 5G era, the ability to control latency in the entire end-to-end network chain guarantees users an unprecedented level of Quality of Service, which would have otherwise been not possible with past technologies,” said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Chief Technology Officer, Deutsche Telekom. “Today’s event is significant, as this innovation makes the application of 5G for industrial use cases more tangible. Through our ongoing partnership together, we will continue to actively make 5G a reality.”

Related to end-to-end latency, each step and element with the 5G end-to-end network chain carries an impact, meaning that Radio Access should not be an exception. With GLA, based on 3GPP’s Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC), in particular, each network element must control its latency contribution. Guaranteed latency is an aspect of Quality of Service (QoS) that is guaranteed with Samsung’s GLA feature, which is part of its 5G radio system. The feature enables efficient operation of scarce radio resources, in turn guaranteeing efficient time management and investment. This makes it an ideal option for various sectors, including those requiring real-time communication such as industrial services and autonomous cars.

Samsung Electronics used its Mobile World Congress 2017 press conference in Barcelona to reaffirm its commitment to building products and networks that transform how consumers make use of mobile connectivity. The February 26 event saw Samsung introduce two stylishly designed tablets, the Galaxy Tab S3 and the Galaxy Book, and offer attendees and those live streaming the event from around the world tantalizing tastes of exciting partnerships and innovations to come.

Attendees were welcomed by David Lowes, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics Europe, who began by discussing Samsung’s drive to push the limits of innovation. To illustrate the company’s extensive efforts, Mr. Lowes welcomed Tim Baxter, President and COO of Samsung Electronics America, to the stage, who announced Samsung’s launch of a commercial 5G network portfolio as well as its plan to provide the world’s first 5G fixed wireless networks, offering blazing fast gigabit home broadband, by early next year.

Mr. Baxter was then joined by Verizon’s Executive Vice President and Chief Information Technology Architect, Roger Gurnani, who spoke on his company’s collaboration with Samsung to begin the first customer trials of 5G technology.

Later, Mark Notton, Samsung Electronics Europe’s Head of Portfolio Strategy, took to the stage to discuss the first of the company’s new tablet offerings: the Galaxy Tab S3. Describing the device as “a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that’s also powerful, fast and versatile,” Mr. Notton illuminated how the tablet’s advanced entertainment and gaming features and refined S Pen, which embodies a creative heritage dating back to Samsung’s popular Note line, help users have more fun.

Afterward, Alanna Cotton, Vice President of Samsung Electronics America, revealed the other new addition to Samsung’s tablet lineup: the Galaxy Book. After unveiling the device, Ms. Cotton outlined how Samsung optimized the 2-in-1 tablet with a lightweight and sturdy design, fast-charging battery, speedy, seventh-generation Intel® Core processor and Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system to offer users the most powerful and productive experience possible. As she told the crowd, “We’re giving users not just a perfect balance between a tablet and a laptop, but a device that can do everything their high-powered PC does.”

Before inviting attendees to test out the new tablets for themselves, Samsung took a moment to announce the launch of a new, motion-sensing Bluetooth controller for the Gear VR headset, designed to help users navigate and immerse themselves in virtual reality content, and also shared an exclusive sneak peek at another Galaxy innovation soon to make its own highly anticipated debut.

After showing a brief video offering a taste of its next flagship smartphone, Samsung distributed invitations to attend a Galaxy Unpacked event on March 29.

In case you missed the exciting announcements, check out the highlights of the event below.

Featuring a sleek and seamless design, top-of-the-line multimedia features, a redefined S Pen and a slew of convenient enhancements, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S3 offers users premium performance and entertainment.

A Signature Design

The Galaxy Tab S3’s minimal and refined design was achieved by affixing glossy, reinforced glass panels to an aluminum frame, resulting in a seamless aesthetic.

The tablet is available in a choice of either understated silver or black, to suit the refined tastes of modern millennials, and its soft-colored cover accessories, available in black, white and green, feature powdery matte finishing to complete the device’s stylish look.

Advanced Audio, Video and Gaming

Samsung optimized the Galaxy Tab S3’s entertainment features with a series of first-of-their-kind enhancements affecting everything from the device’s audio, video and gaming capabilities to its new and improved battery and cameras.

The tablet’s 9.7-inch, Super AMOLED screen, image-optimizing mDNle technology, speedy and efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM allow users to enjoy content in lifelike HDR, as well as 4K, wherever they go. The Galaxy Tab S3 also supports fast charging, and offers a stout 12 hours of video playback when fully charged. In addition, the device’s upgraded 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing cameras ensure crisp and clear photos.

Of course, properly enjoying great video requires excellent sound, which is why the Galaxy Tab S3 features Quad Stereo-Sound Speakers. This is the first Samsung tablet to boast such a design, which places powerful speakers crafted by AKG by Harman in each corner of the device. The speakers’ ‘Auto Rotate Stereo’ function allows the tablet to redirect sound based on its orientation, creating a more accurate and consistent listening experience.

Gaming on the tablet has been taken up a notch, thanks to a streamlined UX and the addition of a new Game Launcher. The latter features options to help users get more out of their gaming experience, allowing them to optimize their device’s battery to lengthen a gaming session, live broadcast their gaming, and turn off notifications with ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode so they can better focus on the action at hand.

To add even more fun, Samsung also included access to the Galaxy Game Pack. Worth over $400 in value and available in 40 games, including exhilarating titles built with the Galaxy Tab S3-supported, graphics-optimizing Vulkan API, the package offers users access to unique and exclusive in-game benefits that allow them to fully enjoy some of the world’s most popular games.

A Redefined S Pen

The Galaxy Tab S3 also features Samsung’s signature, battery-free S Pen, which places a powerful creativity and productivity tool in the palm of users’ hands.

The S Pen boasts a fine, 0.7mm tip and industry-leading sensitivity, recognizing 4,096 levels of pressure. Slide-proof and measuring just over 9mm thick, the S Pen provides a comfortable and stable grip that allows for a more natural handwriting experience overall.

Useful S Pen features include Screen-off Memos, Samsung Notes and Air Command. Samsung Notes consolidates the functions of four Samsung notetaking applications in one simple app, while Air Command provides convenient access to a wide array of tools such as Translate, Magnify, Glance and Smart Select, which now lets users create, save and share their own animated GIFs.

Users may also utilize the implement’s handy PDF Annotation function to get work done on the go, or unleash their creativity with artistic apps such as Recolor, ArtRage and Autodesk’s SketchBook Pro, as well as PEN.UP, a global art community for Galaxy users, and the music-creation app Soundcamp.

Convenient Connectivity

To help users stay consistently connected, the Galaxy Tab S3 includes support for Samsung Flow, an app that allows users to seamlessly transition activities across their devices, simplifies sharing content and syncing notifications between their smartphone and their Galaxy tablet or Windows 10 2-in-1 device, and even lets users unlock their tablet with a simple scan of their Galaxy device’s fingerprint sensor.

The tablet’s dedicated, Pogo pin-connected keyboard locks into place securely so users can get to work quickly, does not require charging, and features a streamlined layout that optimizes key spacing to promote accurate typing. USB Type-C compatibility, meanwhile, provides more convenient cable connections as well as much faster data transfers.

With a sleek and seamless aesthetic, optimized entertainment features, and more tools to stay connected and productive, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S3 offers users a tablet experience that’s both incredibly fun and efficient.

Samsung’s Galaxy Book 2-in-1 tablet features Windows 10 integration for full PC functionality and a host of other advancements, including a refined S Pen, to offer mobile professionals a productivity powerhouse that allows them to maximize their efficiency whenever and wherever they wish.

Optimized for Efficiency

The Galaxy Book is available in 10.6- and 12-inch variations and features a premium, full-metal design that’s thin and lightweight. This makes the device highly portable, and equally suitable for getting work done in the boardroom and on the road.

Available in black or white, the included keyboard cover is a delight to work with, and comes complete with a large touchpad that offers plenty of room to comfortably maneuver through files or tabs. The curved, island-style keys are well spaced to reduce typos, and feature an adjustable backlight* to allow users working late to burn the midnight oil comfortably.

Furthermore, the cover’s ability to prop up the screen at various angles makes it easy to set the Galaxy Book down and get to work anywhere. Each of the three orientation modes – ‘PC’, ‘Easel’ and ‘Note’ – was designed to deliver optimal comfort and usability.

PC-Level Performance

Both Galaxy Book editions are powered by seventh-generation Intel® Core processors that provide premium, PC-level performance. The 10.6-inch edition comes equipped with 4GB of RAM and a choice of 64GB or 128GB of storage, while the 12-inch model is available in a choice of either 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or a generous 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage capacity. Both models allow users to add additional storage via microSD card.

In addition, the 12-inch Galaxy Book’s vibrant Super AMOLED display and the 10.6-inch edition’s TFT screen both support 4K video playback and provide ample room to scan documents on the go or binge a favorite TV show. Their long-lasting batteries charge fast, providing up to 10 hours of power for the 10.6-inch model and up to 10.5 hours for the 12-inch, giving users more freedom to be productive and enjoy their content uninterrupted.

Handy S Pen Integration

One of the Galaxy Book’s most efficient and fun features is its new, multifunctional S Pen, which helps users adopt a more convenient and hands-on approach to their work.

Samsung’s S Pens offer a best-in-class digital writing experience that allows users to enjoy greater productivity and exercise their creativity. The Galaxy Book’s S Pen is the most accurate yet, facilitating precise notes and detailed drawings thanks to its fine, 0.7mm tip, industry-leading sensitivity – recognizing 4,096 levels of pressure – and ability to vary the thickness of its strokes depending on the angle at which it’s tilted. Moreover, the S Pen does not require a battery to function.

The Galaxy Book also features support for the S Pen’s PDF Annotation function, to help users get more work done on the go, and Adobe Photoshop, to allow creative professionals to enjoy the device’s advanced mobile productivity as well. The S Pen’s stroke-width adjusting ‘Tilt’ function is particularly handy when fine-tuning images with the professional software, making it easier for users to enhance depth and detail.

Other handy S Pen tools include Samsung Notes, which consolidates the S Pen’s notetaking, drawing and image-management capabilities in one simple application, as well as Air Command functions such as Smart Select, which now lets users create, save and share their own animated GIFs.

Streamlined Security and Connectivity

Both Galaxy Book models are additionally available in LTE-compatible versions, to cater to always-connected lifestyles, and may be easily integrated into a user’s personal device ecosystem via Samsung Flow. This versatile app allows users to easily sync content and alerts between their Galaxy smartphone and tablet, and even lets them set up secure hotspots and unlock their tablet via their smartphone’s fingerprint sensor.

Transfers between the connected devices are seamless, and enable users to stay up to date without sacrificing data security or efficiency. This means that with Samsung Flow, a user editing a file on the Galaxy Book will receive notifications from their smartphone directly on their tablet and will be able to quickly reply using the Galaxy Book’s keyboard, without missing a beat.

Combining powerful, PC-level performance with the signature convenience of the S Pen, Samsung’s Galaxy Book 2-in-1 device is less of a tablet and more of a highly portable personal computer.

At a press conference held at the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya today, Samsung Electronics unveiled its end-to-end portfolio of 5G mobile network products and solutions for 2017. Showcased products included consumer devices for fixed wireless access connectivity, a 5G Radio Base Station (5G Access Unit), Next-Generation Core Network infrastructure and more. With pre-commercial versions of the equipment already under deployment in trial networks across the globe, Samsung’s commercial 5G portfolio is backed by a continually growing foundation of experience, knowledge and concrete trial results.

“Samsung has been focused on 5G R&D for nearly half a decade, and this portfolio launch represents the culmination of a lot of hard work and industry engagement,” said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of Next Generation Communications Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “With pre-commercial deployment of our 5G products already underway in the US, we’re starting to see some of the earliest evidence of the potential for new and compelling 5G-driven services – it will be exciting to see it evolve as we move forward on our roadmap.”

At the Network Edge

While Samsung has been a long-time vendor of 3G and LTE home femto products, Samsung’s compact 5G Home Router (Customer Premise Equipment, or CPE) represents exploration of new territory – from extending the mobile network towards planting a new fixed wireless network. The 5G Home Router will provide direct and straightforward connectivity to the wireless network, with the simple placement of the 5G Home Router in a window facing a nearby 5G Radio Base Station. A peak data rate of up to 1Gbps will allow service providers to dimension networks that provide an attractive alternative to often-costly FTTH deployments.

The 5G Radio Base Station itself is a natural extension of today’s LTE small cells, designed to be installed in a dense configuration that allows for very high network capacities. The system supports 28GHz mmWave spectrum – a common frequency in leading 5G markets – and is capable of providing up to 10Gbps among devices within its coverage range. With an emphasis on compact size and easy installation, Samsung aims to make 5G network deployments less resource-intensive compared to today’s LTE small cell deployments.

A Fully Virtualized Core Network

As the centralized point of control and direction for network traffic, the core network plays a critical role, and Samsung’s Next-Generation Core Network infrastructure provides a significant leap in performance and flexibility in line with the requirements and demands of emerging connectivity use cases. With a shift to a software-driven architecture, the virtualized core gains the ability to flexibly split network resources, and even individual network functions, in order to maintain peak operational efficiencies. One example of this is the ability to allow data-heavy internet-bound traffic to exit the service provider’s network closer to the user, reducing the potential for congestion within the operator’s network, while potentially improving service responsiveness for users.

Network-wide Management Capabilities

The shift towards a virtualized, or software-driven, network architecture brings a greater degree of complexity in managing the various systems as well as the highly dynamic configuration and traffic routing potential. By leveraging similarly powerful Maintenance and Operation (MANO) systems, as well as localized virtual Element Management Systems (EMS), Samsung can ensure that each component of the network is running at peak efficiency, and in full coordination with the network overall. The network management systems are designed to handle the complexities of next-generation architectures while providing network operations staff with intuitive controls to manage and fine-tune service delivery and network performance.

From Here to Commercial Launch

With pre-commercial versions of these products and solutions already under deployment with operators in the US, Korea and Japan, Samsung’s 5G product portfolio represents the final leg of the journey towards industry 5G adoption. Leveraging additional experience from trials planned for 2017, Samsung’s 5G products will drive the first wave of commercial 5G deployments and will help to ensure a successful and smooth introduction of entirely new services and use cases as the mobile industry ushers in a new era of connectivity. Going forward, Samsung will focus on extending its 5G portfolio with support for Below 6GHz 5G connectivity. Adopting 3GPP Release-15 specifications is another priority, and Samsung’s 5G portfolio is designed to be upgradable to 3GPP standards as they are finalized.

Unveiling new possibilities for the future of mobile communications, Samsung Electronics will showcase a portfolio of its newest network solutions, including 5G, at MWC 2017. The new solutions demonstrate Samsung’s comprehensive 5G vision and cloud-based end-to-end portfolio from network virtualization, E2E orchestration, in-building and campus solutions to 5G.

“The industry is undergoing many dramatic changes, with people requiring new ways of communication yet to be experienced. Samsung is seeking to maximize user happiness by identifying key drivers and implementing the newest solutions,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “At Samsung, our innovative spirit will extend to the 5G era to enrich people’s lives by making day-to-day tasks easier, simpler and automated.”

5G Solutions

At MWC 2017, Samsung will feature its latest advancements in 5G solutions for both mmWave and below 6GHz spectrums. A live demonstration of mmWave 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) will show a maximum data throughput of 4Gbps delivered to the 5G FWA house. 5G FWA will be a game changer in the entire global broadband market and also act as a catalyst for the mobile 5G era.

Samsung also plans on introducing live video analysis involving 5G use cases, which shows huge amounts of video information collected in real-time, and also a latency-free analysis of the videos at the Mobile Edge Cloud. With big data emerging as a global sensation, video analysis can be utilized in areas such as crime prevention, shopping mall logistics management and customer purchase pattern analysis.

Network Virtualization

With virtualization carrying a high significance in the 5G era, effective, agile and prompt network operation became a key topic for operators in introducing new business models and applications. At this year’s MWC, Samsung will demonstrate its virtualized RAN, which will evolve to a Unified RAN, integrating Legacy 4G and 5G together, as well as its automated end-to-end orchestrator.

Samsung Electronics announced the commercial readiness of its 5G RF Integrated Circuit (RFIC) – a key component in the production and commercialization of next-generation base station and other radio access products.

“Samsung has been hard at work for several years on the various foundation technologies that go into the 5G RFIC,” said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of Next Generation Communications Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “We’re excited to finally bring all the pieces together and announce this important milestone on the path to commercial 5G. This will have a big role to play in the upcoming connectivity revolution.”

Samsung announced the new RFIC at a 5G mobile technologies workshop held at the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences. The company presented details on the development and strengths of the chip and outlined its role on the roadmap to commercial 5G products.

The RFIC itself is designed to greatly strengthen the overall performance of 5G access units (the 5G ‘base station’) and Samsung has placed a strong emphasis on designing for low cost, high efficiency and compact form factors. Each of these criteria is expected to play a critical role in delivering on the promises of 5G.

The RFIC incorporates a high-gain/high-efficiency power amplifier, a technology Samsung announced in June last year. This means the chip can provide extended coverage in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, overcoming one of the primary challenges of high frequency spectrum. At the same time, Samsung’s RFIC is capable of greatly improved transmission and reception performance. The RFIC’s ability to reduce phase noise in its operating band enables clearer radio signals even in noisy environments where signal quality loss would otherwise disrupt high-speed communications. Completing the chip is a compact chain of 16 low loss antennae, which further enhance overall efficiency and performance.

Samsung’s current RFIC is slated for use in the 28GHz mmWave spectrum band that has very quickly become a primary target for early 5G deployments in markets such as the U.S., Korea and Japan. With development on the chip complete, Samsung is now accelerating its plans for 5G commercial product readiness, with the first RFIC-equipped solutions expected to be announced early next year.

Expect more key announcements from Samsung at Mobile World Congress, Feb. 27 – March 2.
