The recently released Firmware 1.3 upgrade gives your NX1 a whole range of new features and improvements. Most notably, camera’s video recording gets a big boost in quality.

For starters, the upgraded software doubles the amount of data read by your camera’s sensor, and as a result greatly increases the quality of the 60p Full HD video. This change results in excellent Full HD videos that have much more detail and far less noise. Check out these screenshots from the latest firmware upgrade and compare them to the NX 1 running the previous software.

Firmware 1.3 ISO 800 F4 1/125s, Quality: Pro

The first screenshot above was taken from a video recorded with a lot of light — in other words high illuminance — with a camera using Firmware 1.2. The second image is a screenshot in identical conditions, but was taken by a camera running Firmware 1.3. You can easily tell that the camera with 1.3 captures objects with much more clarity and detail.

But let’s zoom in and highlight the differences – here’s a close-up.

The left image is from the screenshot that was taken with Firmware 1.2, while on the right is an image shot with Firmware 1.3. Look carefully, and you will notice how much clearer the letters and textures are, especially on the detail of the golden parts of the object.

Now check out the screenshots taken in different light conditions.

Firmware 1.2 ISO 6400 F5.6 1/60s, Quality: Pro

Firmware 1.3 ISO 6400 F5.6 1/60s, Quality: Pro

These are two screenshots taken from videos recorded with less sunlight — low illuminance — with cameras using Firmware 1.2 and Firmware 1.3, respectively.

Because it’s darker, there’s going to be more noise in the images. As expected, you may easily notice it in the Firmware 1.2 screenshot. However, you will be surprised by how much less noise there is in the screenshot taken with Firmware 1.3 – it is a much more vivid image compared to the picture taken with the older firmware.

When the picture is cropped for a closer look, the difference is even more obvious. The image on the right has much less noise in the dark background, and the writing is much clearer.

The Firmware 1.3 upgrade gives you other improvements too. The NX1 now supports Full HD 120p recording. 120p means that you can record a video with 120 progressive images per second. The bigger the number of images per second, the smoother your video will be.

For the NX1 running older firmware, users previously had to choose between 24p, 30p, 60, and then switch to slow-motion to enable 120p recording. With the 1.3 upgrade, 120p recording has become the standard option, even when recording voice.

The upgrade now also makes it possible to customize the sensitivity of the manual focus (MF). A camera’s focus should move and adjust quickly, especially when you want to take a snapshot or capture a sports scene.

However, when it comes to video recording, a fast moving focus can easily spoil the movie; it just doesn’t feel natural. But now, under Firmware 1.3 there is an option to set the responsiveness of the Manual Focus to ‘Low’. In other words, when you turn the focus it moves much slower, and the MF adjusts just as it would with a lens on a movie camera.

Moreover, Firmware 1.3 enables your camera to display histogram and digital levels during standby/recording mode. This will save users a lot of frustration, as they will no longer have their video recording ruined by a sloped background.

The upgrade brings many other enhancements for still photos as well as connectivity.

For stills, the auto focus (AF) performance has been greatly improved, so it’s now easier to get a good auto focus even in tricky light conditions like low illumination or too much backlight.

The Firmware 1.3 upgrade also comes with a new Zone AF, which makes it possible to focus on and track a moving object in a specific area. This is definitely an excellent feature when you want to shoot a fast-moving scene without compromising the composition of the photo.

With Samsung Remote Studio (SRS) software, you can control your camera from a computer, and even take pictures with it just through the USB port. This will especially come in handy when taking pictures in a studio, or shooting a still life or product. The image will automatically be sent to your PC, saving you the hassle of copying or importing images to your computer.

There are three ways to upgrade the Firmware on your NX1. Either download the upgrade from Samsung.com and copy it to your camera’s SD card, upgrade it through the iLauncher software, or if your NX1 is connected to the internet through Wi-Fi, the camera can simply upgrade itself.

The Samsung NX1 has been widely recognized for its excellence and performance. The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) — one of the most respected organizations in the field in Europe — honored it as the Best Compact System Camera (CSC) Professional 2015. DPreview.com, a renowned camera review site, gave it a gold award and it even scored 83 points on DxOMark, the highest score in what is the most trusted industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings in France.

And there is more to come – Samsung will continue to evolve the NX1 through firmware upgrades. NX1 owners know that the picture quality of their camera is only going to get better and better.

Samsung’s NX1 interchangeable lens camera has garnered glowing reviews from two widely respected authorities on digital photography. In recently published reviews, Digital Photography Review and DxO Mark conducted thorough reviews of the camera were particularly impressed by the camera’s BSI sensor, the pixel count on the APS-C body as well as its autofocus and burst shooting speed.

DP Review gave the NX1 its coveted Gold Award, with a score of 87%. ”Not only does the NX1 feature the largest BSI sensor we’ve ever seen, but it also offers the highest pixel count of any APS-C body,” concluded DP Review.

“The combination results in excellent image quality and – just as important – the NX1 also incorporates one of the most extensive and effective on-sensor phase detection systems we’ve seen. All this, along with the magnesium alloy body and top-plate LCD info display, means that the NX1 can compete with the best APS-C models on the market.”

DP Review also recommends the NX1 for videographers due to the camera’s excellent 4K video quality capability, which it calls “our new reference camera for internal 4K video recording.”

Captured by NX1, source: http://samsungcamera.com/

In a review titled, “Hail the new king of APS-C hybrids!” DxO Mark gave the NX1 an overall score of 83 points, its highest score ever for an APS-C hybrid, judged on criteria such as color depth, dynamic range, and low-light ISO.

“The new sensor in the NX1 has upped the stakes in terms of hybrid image quality, making Samsung’s latest hybrid the current king of mirrorless APS-C cameras in our database. The BSI sensor is not only the physically largest sensor of its type, but boasting a 28.2 million pixels, it’s also the highest-resolution APS-C hybrid currently available,” DxO Mark wrote in its review. “Add to that high-caliber features such as the 205-point autofocus system and 15fps burst shooting, and the NX1 is an attractive-looking proposition.”

DP Review also noted that the NX1 offers several features that are industry firsts for interchangeable lens cameras, including the 802.11ac Wi-fi, the use of the H.265 video codec and the stripe pattern AF illuminator. The website also noted that the electronic viewfinder has virtually no lag – just 5 milliseconds, on the 2.36M dot OLED screen, indistinguishable to the human eye. Electronic viewfinder lag is often cited as a drawback of mirrorless cameras.

DxOMark offers industry standard camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings, while DP Review, founded in 1998, is the world’s most popular dedicated enthusiast digital photography site.

Samsung Electronics announced a firmware update for the Samsung NX1, its premium compact system camera. The new firmware enhances and refines the Samsung NX1’s capabilities, allowing it to operate with even greater precision and speed. Key enhancements focus on movie functions and controls, the user interface and wireless capabilities.

Both budding and experienced film makers will enjoy the variety of Movie mode refinements, which deliver an even more professional filming experience. Not only can users now adjust audio levels while recording video, they can also control ISO and choose from two Gamma modes with Master Black Level Control and three luminance levels, enabling greater control over the look of footage. AF controls in movie mode have also been enhanced, allowing users to select from three AF speeds. A new feature for controlling continuous AF behavior also helps track focus on a moving subject while shooting.

The Samsung NX1’s interface is also upgraded, making it easier than ever to navigate through the range of features. Users can now set the AEL button to lock focus, and use manual focus in AF mode during recording. The customizable UI refinements provide a host of benefits, including reversing the functions of the Mobile and Record buttons, reversing the functions of the AF On and the AEL buttons, and reversing the direction of the Command dials based on preference.

The range of connectivity options available on the Samsung NX1 has received a boost, and users can now activate Bluetooth as a simple remote trigger. Speeding up and simplifying the process for using a smart device as a remote control, this new feature can trigger the shutter release as well as stop and start video via Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi. The Samsung NX1 can now also store multiple paired smart devices with no need to re-register when moving between different devices, allowing greater consistency and convenience.

Other updates include Trap Shot, an addition to the popular Samsung Auto Shot mode. Users can now adjust the settings so that when a moving object hits this line, the camera will automatically take a picture. PC tethering via USB is now a reality for those using Samsung Remote Studio software and developers can take advantage of Samsung’s Software Development Kit for Windows PC, meaning they have remote access and control software for the Samsung NX1.

The firmware update will be available in middle of January through www.samsung.com.
* All functionality, features, specifications and other product information provided in this document including, but not limited to, the benefits, design, pricing, components, performance, availability, and capabilities of the product are subject to change without notice or obligation.
