Samsung’s QuickDrive technology reduces washing time by half, without compromising washing performance. Caught in Super Slow-mo, viewers can clearly see the washer’s innovative Q-Drum in action, with the main drum and the back plate rotating independently. This independent motion, powered by double forces, ensures the clothes inside the washing machine move dynamically around the drum—back and forth, as well top to bottom.

POWERbot powerfully cleans even the most hard-to-reach areas. Slowing down the robot vacuum cleaner with Super Slow-mo allows viewers to appreciate its powerful suction, which delivers optimal cleaning results with 40x more suction power than the previous model*. In addition, the device’s self-cleaning brush prevents clogging from collected dust and tangled hair, cutting down on regular maintenance and enabling it to run autonomously even longer.

Watching Samsung’s WaterWall dishwasher technology in Super Slow-mo, viewers can see individual jets create a powerful wall of water that cleans everything in the dishwasher. The Top Control Dishwasher with WaterWall also harnesses Zone Booster in the left half of the appliance, which has five nozzles for the industry’s widest targeted cleaning that cleans even the dirtiest dishes in a single wash.

Collaborating with Super Fans

So where did the idea originally come from? Dongwook Kim from the Digital Business Division revealed: “I’m a big fan of Star Wars and I began to wonder about how to make a vacuum cleaner more fun, exciting, and something that users could enjoy using daily. Then, it came to me: How about Star Wars designs on the POWERbot vacuum cleaners?”

The device strongly evokes the likenesses of two of Star Wars’ most iconic images: the masks of Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper. Each edition includes the detailed features of the two characters, particularly their sounds. For example, when the Darth Vader unit starts, the vacuum will play ‘The Imperial March’ and mimic the Sith Lord’s chillingly mechanical inhale and exhale. When you turn on the Stormtrooper version, you will hear ‘let’s go’ with the theme song playing in the background.

To fulfill user expectations, Samsung Electronics also collaborated with an online community of Star Wars fans. The members of the community are so passionate about Star Wars that many of them say being a Star Wars fan is their job. Some decorate their vehicles with Star Wars images, and others mimic the voice of Darth Vader. In fact, a member of the online fan community provided the voice for the Darth Vader edition POWERbot.

The collaborative efforts with 20 members of the online fan community helped the design team to come up with the most detailed features, such as the color scheme, the number of grills, how deep the eyes should look and feel, and other different details. As the two sides worked together, the POWERbot continually evolved.

Overcoming Design Challenges

The designer’s task was to create a product that conveys that essence of Darth Vader from the movie. To find the perfect design, the team members focused on the color and the appearance of the eyes.

They studied many different shades before they discovered Death Black, a color that perfectly fits into the character. Sangin Lee from Design 2 Group, right below, said, “Death Black is really fitting for a character like Darth Vader: it’s just the right shade of menacing.” He also added, “I never knew there were so many different shades of black, it wasn’t easy to narrow it down to just one.”

The eyes obscured by the mask on Darth Vader’s face create a particularly sinister feeling, so the design team made that part of the product even darker. Yet if the shape of the eyes was even slightly irregular or asymmetrical, the whole look was distorted. The team went through a lengthy process of trial and error as they changed the dimensions over and over again, with similar painstaking attention to detail required for the Stormtrooper model.

“We drew the characters on the products so many times and printed out tens of mockups. But, seeing it in two dimensions on the screen and then seeing it in three after applying it to the product are very different experiences,” said Sangin Lee. “We decided to use silk printing to ensure the quality but when we first brought the design to silk printing experts, some said it would be too difficult.”

Thankfully, the design team was able to locate a silk printing expert who lives in GwangJu, a city 268 km away from Seoul. This expert was invited to consult during their business trip to Vietnam, where they visited the production site and conducted training sessions fitting the design to the POWERbot.

Keeping Stars Wars at the Center of Design

It wasn’t just the appearance of the POWERbot which was transformed: the design team applied the Star Wars concept to every part of the Star Wars Limited Edition POWERbot.

Nooree Na from UX Innovation, left above, suggested that they add the voices from the movie. “When we first started this project, I watched the whole series of Star Wars films and read each and every script from cover to cover,” she explained. “Focusing on the Stormtroopers and Darth Vader, I narrowed down the quotes that could be applied to our product. The previous model has a very friendly voice but Darth Vader is not that type of character, as we all know. Even so, we didn’t want the cleaner to sound like it is ordering our users about! It was tough work finding just the right expressions to fit the product.”

Sunghoon Jung from UX Innovation, right above, who was in charge of packaging design, understands how important it is to meet the expectations of the fans: “Many super fans keep the packaging as well as the products, so we paid a lot of attention to designing the box as well as what’s inside it.”

In addition to an eye-catching design, the Star Wars Limited Edition POWERbot promises all the powerful cleaning technology and features of the original VR7000. CycloneForce technology offers high-end suction power and Edge Clean Master, helps the unit clean close to walls and edges. What’s more, the product has a Navigation Camera that recognizes the structure of the entire house and finds the fastest cleaning route and the FullView Sensor 2.0 that allows the unit to clean around home decorations and valuable personal items as small as 10mm.

“The team members say that when you are using Edge Clean Master, it looks as if Darth Vader has taken out his lightsaber,” said Sangin Lee from Design 2 Group. “We actually had a lot of fun in completing this challenging project, and we hope users have fun as well, as they use the product.”

This is the first time that Samsung Electronics has applied iconic movie characters to its home appliance products. Samsung hopes that the Star Wars Limited Edition POWERbot can help users feel that cleaning is no longer a chore, but is something they can enjoy doing, as they try the many different fun features.

Samsung Electronics released the Star Wars Limited Edition POWERbot  robot vacuum cleaner earlier this month to the US market. To create this sci-fi cleaning appliance, Samsung worked closely with Star Wars enthusiasts during the product planning, design and production stages to ensure authenticity.

The new Star Wars Limited Edition shares the same innovative technology as Samsung’s original robot vacuum POWERbot^TM VR7000, but it also packs a host of special features and unique designs that cater to diehard Star Wars fans worldwide. Meticulously Realistic Design

What sets the Star Wars Limited Edition POWERbot^TM apart from the original VR7000 is the unforgettable design of the two available models. The Darth Vader edition was crafted from premium materials to closely resemble Sith Lord Darth Vader’s all-black mask, while the Stormtrooper version is a near-perfect replica of the white helmets worn by the ground force of the Galactic Empire. Both models stand ready to rid the galaxy of dirt, and hard to reach spaces under sofas and chairs thanks to its slim 97mm height.

In an effort to produce an authentic product that would be accepted as true in the eyes of Star Wars fans worldwide, Samsung collaborated closely with super fans at every step of development, from product planning, design and production, to marketing, and distribution – a first-of-its-kind approach to building and launching a product designed by the fans, for the fans.

May the Voice be with You

Both models not only meticulously resemble their respective imperial characters, they also sound like them too, thanks to voice feedback with real dialogue and sound effects from Star Wars movies.

The Darth Vader model features a myriad of realistic sound bites and effects, including Vader’s infamous breathing sound, a light saber sound effect, and quotes like “You are powerful”. The Stormtrooper is not to be outdone and also features many authentic sounds, including commands such as “Let’s go!” and “Stop that!” And for those who need a little extra motivation to get out of bed in the morning, you can set your robot vacuum cleaner to wake you up to the soothing beats of the Imperial March!

The Automatic Charge function automatically moves a unit that’s low on power back to its docking station and while returning to base to charge battle-weary batteries, the Darth Vader model triumphantly plays the powerful Imperial March, while the Stormtrooper model plays the Star Wars main theme.

Smart and Powerful Cleaning with Darth Vader

Star Wars Limited Edition POWERbot^TM features strong functionality from the original version of the VR7000, including its innovative smart cleaning features.

But thanks to its mastery of the dark side, it’s now more powerful with up to 20 times the suction power of the original, which beats most other conventional cleaning units. Controlling the devices is easier than ever too, with intuitively designed operation buttons and a handy remote controller for the Darth Vader edition only.

With the FullView Sensor 2.0, your POWERbot^TM VR7000 can accurately scan and avoid the smallest of obstacles so corners are no longer an issue. Also built into the clever robot vacuum is the Edge Clean Master, which provides a more efficient way to clean along walls meaning you won’t have to. Additionally, an Auto Shutter automatically activates and drops down to create a barrier that allows for greater dust suction near edges. Samsung Electronics today introduced a new Star Wars limited edition of the widely acclaimed POWERbot robot vacuum cleaner, the VR7000. The result of a collaboration between Samsung and Star Wars fans, the innovative and powerful vacuum with iconic Darth Vader and Stormtrooper designs is intended to captivate fans in anticipation of the December release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the final film in the Disney and Lucas Films saga.

The Darth Vader version of the POWERbot features a specially created cover using custom premium materials that resembles Darth Vader’s all-black mask while the Stormtrooper version replicates the look of a white and black Stormtrooper’s helmet. The Darth Vader model comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and its own remote control. Both models also offer fun and unique sound effects appropriate for each character. For example, when powering on the Darth Vader unit, the vacuum will play and mimic the character’s infamous breathing.

In order to create a special edition product authentic and true in the eyes of Star Wars fans, Samsung worked very closely with super fans at every step, from product planning to design, production, marketing, and distribution. It was a first-of-its-kind approach to building and launching a product designed by the fans and built for the fans.

The VR7000 Star Wars limited edition promises all of the powerful cleaning technology and features of the original VR7000, such as suction power capacity of 10 watts, CycloneForce technology, and Edge Clean Master, which helps the unit clean close to walls and edges. It can even work autonomously, using Visionary Mapping Plus to remember the room and find the fastest cleaning routes around the user’s home. FullView Sensor 2.0 allows the unit to clean around home decorations and valuable personal items as small as 10mm. With its unique smart features and powerful performance, the VR7000 was awarded the 2017 CES Innovation Award.

Pre-orders for the special Star Wars limited edition POWERbot will begin on the Samsung.com website on October 10, with availability in the United States. As part of the launch, Samsung will also introduce its “Vacuum Your Space” video which is created by Star Wars super fans. Other various fan-centric activations and rewards with retail and commerce partners will continue rolling out.

Getting Smart around the Home

One of Samsung’s major smart products is the Family Hub 2.0 refrigerator, which launched earlier this year. It uses voice recognition to provide an intuitive way for users to not just connect with their kitchen, but also the world around them. Say, “Can you purchase cheese?” and the refrigerator asks you, “Which product? Please tell me the number.” as it shows an app screen that lets you order food directly from the screen. You can play music or find out what the weather is like as you communicate with the smart refrigerator. It even gives you ideas if you need recipe inspiration.

Next, there is QuickDrive, an intelligent washing machine that was showcased during IFA 2017. It includes an AI-powered laundry assistant called Q-rator, which suggests the best cycle for your laundry based on information you input. Tell it what type of garments you want to wash, how dirty they are and what color they are and it will do the rest. It also lets you set the time for when the loads will be done, meaning your washing will be ready at a time that’s convenient for you. Plus, the system monitors the machine remotely and alerts you if it’s having any issues.

Last but not least, there is POWERbot, Samsung’s smart robot vacuum cleaner that received a 2017 CES Innovation Award. It uses a full suite of sensors to map your space, remember where it’s cleaned, and detect and work around any obstacles in its way, while automatically adjusting its suction power on different surfaces.

Samsung, the Leading Player in the Smart Appliances Era 

The Family Hub sits at the core, serving as the nerve center of a broader connected ecosystem in the home. The European Forum event follows a hugely successful Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for Samsung in January, at which the brand collected an incredible 80 awards, including Best of Innovation award in TV.

Setting a New Standard for Viewing and Audio Experience

Samsung unveiled its spectacular new line-up of SUHD TVs that feature unparalleled picture quality with Quantum dot display. The world’s first bezel-less curved design, which is beautiful from every angle, also provides the smartest user experience that makes it easy for consumers to access all their entertainment content in one place. Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs feature the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, offering the most true-to-life picture quality, with stunning brightness, exceptional contrast and the most lifelike colours ever offered by Samsung.

This new range provides a premium, high dynamic range (HDR) experience, with 1,000 nit HDR minimum for a higher level contrast between light and dark images. New Ultra Black technology also significantly reduces light reflection, further enhancing picture quality with minimal glare.

Built on the Tizen operating system (OS), Samsung’s 2016 Smart TVs make it easier for consumers to discover and access all their favorite content and services, from TV and movies to games and program information, all in one place on the new Smart Hub. The need to juggle multiple remote controls is also eliminated. The Samsung Smart TV will automatically recognize the type of set-top box, game console, OTT box or home cinema system to which it is connected.

Showcasing the full SUHD range from the 7000 series models to the premium 9000 series, Samsung will bring a wide selection of SUHD TV models to Europe in spring 2016.

The company also revealed the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the HDR-compatible UBD-K8500, which offers four times the resolution and 64 times higher colour expression than conventional Blu-ray players. The UBD-K8500’s built-in upscaling technology enhances the picture quality from standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and consumers can also play CDs. The Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray player will be available from March across Europe and each device will be sold with a copy of Fox Home Entertainment, The Martian, Starring Matt Damon in Ultra HD.

Samsung also unveiled the latest additions to its audio product lineup, including the HW-K950 Soundbar, the company’s first to feature Dolby Atmos®, and the industry’s first soundbar package to include two Dolby Atmos®-enabled wireless rear speakers. The complete HW-K950 package delivers incredible 5.1.4-channel sound.

At the event Samsung showcased its newest curved monitors and demonstrated the productivity benefits of its professional-geared displays. With the release of its CF591 and CF390 monitors, Samsung continues to elevate its pioneering curved display design to offer even greater visibility and user comfort. These 1800R curvature monitors match the natural shape of the human eye, providing a more natural viewing experience.

Intelligent Next Generation of Digital Appliances That Transform the Home

Samsung’s market leadership in digital appliances is also evident with its launch of smart and practical innovations that could make a big difference to household chores.

The new AddWash Front-load Washing Machine has a distinctive access door that makes it convenient to add any item, such as a piece of forgotten laundry, without having to drain the washer in order to open the main washer door mid-cycle. It also allows users to add hand-washed items for rinsing, or additional softener anytime during the cycle.

It also comes with an array of smart functions, which work with both Android and iOS smartphones. That not only makes it easy to monitor the progress of the laundry program, but also offers the option to alert users on their smartphone just before the start of a new washing cycle, for example if they want to add a few delicate or hand-wash items towards the end of the wash cycle.

An embodiment of Samsung’s innovation in delivering super time savings and washing performance, the AddWash Washing Machine comes with a SuperSpeed feature that makes it possible to complete a normal wash in less than an hour without compromising washing performance. Samsung AddWash will be available across Europe from this month.

Samsung used its European Forum to announce that French-English two-star Michelin chef, Michel Roux Jr. is to become the eighth member of its esteemed Club des Chefs.  Michel Roux Jr., of Le Gavroche and Roux, is also known in the UK as a popular TV personality, appearing as a judge and presenter on the BBC’s popular primetime programme, Masterchef.

Samsung also announced the expansion of its robot vacuum lineup with POWERbot Turbo Wi-Fi. Now with 70 times more powerful suction than leading robot vacuum brands*, its Cyclone Force system uses strong centrifugal forces to pick up and separate dirt into the outer chamber to reduce filter chopping and keep optimal suction power.

Equipped with Smart Control Wi-Fi connectivity, the vacuum enables consumers to control the movement of the vacuum remotely using their smartphone. The “Select & Go” feature creates a virtual map of the entire home on your smartphone app, with each room that can be named individually. It then lets you pick specific areas or rooms in the home that may need cleaning. Simply select a room and the vacuum will make its way over there. With an enhanced digital mapping system that can literally “see” its way around your home, Samsung’s new robot vacuum delivers the ultimate clean, all without lifting a finger.

A major new attraction at the European Forum 2016 was the new Family Hub Refrigerator, redefining the kitchen with the ultimate smart home appliance, which helps families to connect and provides new ways to manage, shop and prepare food. Its centrepiece is a 21.5-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen, a digital command centre for the connected home, which combines powerful performance with ground-breaking technology never before seen in a refrigerator.

The Family Hub’s Key capabilities include:

• Improved Food Management: Three built-in cameras take a photo of the inside of the refrigerator every time the door is closed so consumers can always see what they have wherever they go, via their smartphone.

• Family Communication Centre: The Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator enables the family to write notes, post photos, share calendars and artwork, right on the refrigerator’s touchscreen, or using their smartphone if they are away.

• Connected Entertainment: With the Family Hub Refrigerator’s built-in stereo speakers, people can stream their favourite music service, or TV content from their Samsung Smart TVs directly to the touchscreen, as well as connecting to their own Bluetooth speakers.

Breaking Barriers in Mobile Productivity and Wearable Technology

At the European Forum 2016, Samsung also showcased the soon-to-be launched new Gear S2 classic 18k rose gold and platinum. For a more personal and customizable experience, Samsung is expanding its line of watch straps and watch face options. Samsung has partnered with exclusive designers, such as Colombo, on premium watch straps for the Gear S2, and has introduced fun and creative watch faces including Peanuts characters and artworks from Keith Haring, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Jeremyville and Burton Morris.

In addition, the Gear S2 will be compatible with devices running on iOS to extend accessibility to a wider range of mobile users.

Samsung also showcased the Galaxy TabPro S, which combines Samsung’s world-class technology powered by Microsoft Windows 10 operating system to create the thinnest and lightest 2-in1 tablet available on the market. By integrating the most popular features of laptops and tablets, users now have access to full notebook PC functionality in a lightweight tablet for the most productive mobile experience.

With a sleek and lightweight form factor, the Galaxy TabPro S is designed to be easily carried around all day, powering you through your home and work life. A full-sized keyboard cover enhances the usability, while a flexible hinge enables optimal, dual-angle viewing for the clearest display under any circumstance.

The Galaxy TabPro S extends Samsung’s advanced technology to the Windows operating system by providing the first Super AMOLED display for Windows, as well as other core features such as fast charging and up to 10.5 hours of battery life. For enhanced productivity, the Galaxy TabPro S is also compatible with a multiport adopter and Bluetooth Pen.

Samsung as a Top Brand in Europe

Last year, Samsung Electronics was named the second most valuable brand in the world, according to results from world leading, independent brand valuation consultancy, Brand Finance. The company was also named a top ten Superbrand in the Business Superbrands 2015 category. In its 34^th year of operation within Europe Samsung continues to invest heavily in European design and production creating vast employment in the region.
